Viking Emerald Cruise Review by Richard-from-Lowell
- Sail Date: November 2017
- Destination: Asia River
Each group of 30 had a guide who stayed with the group for the entire trip. Our guide, Richard, was wonderful. He was fluent in English, knowledgeable, friendly, attentive, detail-minded. He made sure that everything went as smoothly as possible.
The activities and tours were set up to show us modern and historical China. We saw museums and historic sights, shows, indoor and outdoor activities. We saw pandas, climbed the Great Wall, sailed the Yangtze, walked among the Terra Cotta army, crossed Tian'anmen Square, and went through the Forbidden City. It was a wonderful time.
We went in November and packed to dress in layers. We encountered temperatures from about 80 to below freezing (Great Wall), but we were prepared and comfortable. The smog we had head about was barely discernable and not a problem with the cooler weather. The river was foggy, very foggy at times below the dams, and we missed our school visit. By the time we were in the scenic area of the Three Gorges, visibility was much improved.
Everyone was helpful and gracious on the ship , in the hotels, at the tour sites, in the restaurants, the buses, the airports. Viking lined up excellent service and enjoyable experiences throughout the entire trip. We learned a lot; we enjoyed ourselves a lot, it was a great time.
