We chose this cruise for the Rio Carnival and we were not at all disappointed. That said there were prior fears about the ship being fit for purpose, given the propulsion problems experienced on the previous cruise. We never encountered any such problems at all. Embarkation was fast & smooth. The ship itself is definitely tired and past its best, there is a real need for a refurb. Everywhere you look there are shortcomings eg:- canopies over aft balconies were filthy, lots of dents in cabin doors, marks on furnishings, doors hanging off in cabin etc etc. The one real embarrasment was the lack of pool towels - many had rips but there was a real mish mash of colours to make up sufficient numbers. The entertainmemt was a mixed bag. Some really good shows as well as some fairly mediocre acts. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard of the food in the MDR. In the past we have taken ultimate dining but given there is now no SS United States dining we only took out a 3 meal speciality package & frankly did not see the value in it. IMHO Celebrity really need to consider what they are trying to achieve with just Tuscan & Qsine because frankly there are not worth the money, given that some of the dishes from the SS United States are now incorporated in the MDR menus. The one real disppointment to me was the advantage that Celebrity took with the cost of Shore Excursions, particularly to the Rio Carnival. It was nothing short of DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!!! They charged passengers $599 for sitting on the concrete steps of Sector 9. I arranged for private tickets and transfers for a mere 30% of that cost. There were many who criticised Celebrity through spreading fear with cabin notices about personal safety at Rio & Buenos Aires thus forcing them to take ships tours, but to me they simply took full advantage of the situation. It really left a sour taste! The staff, by & large, were first class. Most were very obliging, had smiles on their faces and couldn't do enough for you. They certainly made up for some of the other shortcomings. In summary the 'niggles' that we encountered did not detract from the enjoyment and I would highly recommend a visit to the Rio Carnival -- albeit by not paying the exorbitant sums that Celebrity demanded!

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean View with Balcony 2C
Cabin 2C 2176
Perfecly adequate, quiet & comfortable. That said cupboard door was hanging off, dressing table light switch loose & toilet flush temperamental. One concern was that the previous occupants accounts were shown on the TV along with ours. Despite bringing this to the attention of guest services nothing was done about removing them!
