My husband and I wanted a way to see Europe without the hassle of actually traveling a lot. We went through our travel agent friend and she suggested Avalon. What a great choice! We booked a honeymoon right after our wedding in December so we were able to see the Christmas Markets. We departed from Budapest and sailed up the Danube on the beautiful Avalon Illumination. I've been on a lot of ocean cruises, so a river cruise would be a different experience. It was much more personable. I think the biggest difference is that there are only 3 floors and because of this it's much more regulated about what times you can eat. We had a panoramic view cabin and it was huge! It rivals the balconies on ocean cruises and the bathroom was beautiful. The staff is much smaller so they get to know you. The dining room experience is also a little bit different. No assigned tables so you can meet different people. Now the thing is, my husband and I are in our early 30s. The average age on the ship was 55+. So if you're looking for a roaring good time, that will not be found. It's much more subdued and the entertainment is good but sparse. We were there for the sights. Our cruise director was fabulous in setting up lectures about the ports and locks as we arrived. Tours are included, but there are some options to purchase excursions. The included tours are great. There is a local guide that takes you to a key part of the city, sometimes food or drink is also included. Then you have free time to explore on your own. It's fantastic. I highly recommend this method of travel. I'd do it again, just in the summer maybe so it's less cold.

Cabin B
What a beautiful cabin. If it were nicer weather, we would have had the window open much more. It was very clean and the bathroom was a great size.
