Norwegian Sun Cruise Review by CruiseWoods
- Sail Date: November 2017
- Destination: Caribbean
- Cabin Type: Aft-Facing Mini-Suite
CONDITION OF THE SHIP: The Sun is outdated in decor, but that didn't bother us. What does bother us is the general condition of the ship. The furnishings, carpets, drapes, you name it are dirty and in need of replacement. The Sun should have been heavily renovated a few years ago. NCL advertises the ship as renovated in 2016. We really aren't sure what they renovated. I can't stress to you how bad of shape this ship is in. Pool tiles are cracked. Tables and chairs are broken and dirty. Bar stools broken. Drinks spilled on a wall were not cleaned the entire cruise. Ripped carpets.
***See below pictures and cabin review for more details on the Sun's condition.
THE SHIP: The Sun is a small boat, which we like. It is not covered in water slides and other gimmicky stuff. We really enjoyed eating outside in the Great Outdoors. If this ship was heavily renovated, we would return. We liked the layout and the amount of deck space. There is a ton of deck space compared to the newer boats.
SERVICE: The service is really hit or miss. The restaurant and bar staff were generally great. Room service was painfully slow, which is frustrating because of the charge to deliver. Morning coffee regularly took around 30-40 minutes to arrive.
FOOD: The food is repetitive. The dining rooms offer convention center quality entrees. The buffet offers the same breakfast every morning. That gets old after 11 nights on the ship. Cagney's and Moderno were great.
ENTERTAINMENT: This was a major let down. The evening entertainment one evening was a comedian juggler and a Whitney Houston impersonator. Seriously.
There wasn't much live music besides a really bizarre latin duo that used a drum machine. However, we highly enjoyed the piano singer James. He was singing everything from Nelly to Johnny Cash. We also enjoyed the string quartet for about 30 minutes in the atrium with a glass of wine before dinner.
We really enjoy being outside in the evening having a drink. Why be crammed into the decks of a ship when its beautiful outside? There were only three events in 11 nights on the pool deck of a Caribbean cruise. The first two ended before 11PM. The White Hot Party was a couple of hours of caribbean rap music from a DJ. I guess there wasn't a band available again? The teenagers got on the stage and danced the whole time, which was fine. But then the males removed their shirts and there was a 15 year old girl dancing around in her thong bikini, dropping it, while she was soaking wet from the pool. The cruise director stood right by them and just let this happen for the last half of the party. I'm not being a prude, this was just wildly inappropriate. The kiddos kind of ran off everyone over 25 years old.
CONCLUSION: We had a wonderful time because we were on a cruise. But NCL's pricing is not far off from nicer cruise lines, which offer drinks packages too! We are willing to make that jump next time. The Sun would be a great ship if NCL put some money into her. But I'm not willing to take a gamble on another "renovated" NCL ship and I'm not going to cruise on their huge ships. So if NCL isn't going to take care of their smaller ships, we will find a line that does.

CONS: Our room was dirty. The walls were so gross, NCL re-wallpapered our room while we were in port. We appreciate the effort, but didn't want to deal with filth on our vacation. Our balcony door broke. Our front door broke. The drawers broke. The balcony was dirty, very dirty. We woke up with lots of soot from the garbage incinerator on our balcony two of our sea days.
The back of the Sun vibrates violently when the ship slows down, speeds up, turns, or pulls into port. It will wake you up and you will not be able to sleep through the vibrations. It feels like someone put a quarter in the bed. The vibrations went on for hours when we slowed down one evening. The room shook so bad things would fall off the tables. The ceiling tiles, doors, drawers, etc, etc. rattled profusely. We met all our neighbors on their balconies every morning when everyone was woke up by the vibrations. We have stayed in the aft of many ships, but never experienced anything like this. With vibrations like that, no wonder everything in room is broken.
I feel like we spent so much of our cruise trying to get our room in order. NCL should be ashamed for the condition of the staterooms.

ArubaWe rented a Jeep and went off roading. We did the entire island because the ship did not leave until 9pm. Aruba has some serious rocks. We rented from Smart Rental on the internet months before - sometimes Jeeps in Aruba sell out early! Smart Rentals price and service was great. They met us at the pier with our car.View All 1,635 Aruba Cruise Port Reviews

Buggy TourThe amount of time driving the dune buggy was short. NCL bussed us across the island which took most of the time. The off-roading area they took us to was covered in trash. Curacao is not clean like Aruba.View All 14 Buggy Tour Reviews
Scenic RailwayWe loved the sugar train. This is probably one of the best tours in the Caribbean. The scenery was beautiful. We sat on top in the shade, drank lots of rum, and watched the volcanoes go by in the distance. The train is a little pricey for a tour, but we loved it - worth every penny.View All 259 Scenic Railway Reviews
