  3. Celebrity Infinity
My wife and I are long time Celebrity cruisers, but, after some management changes a couple of years ago, we had become somewhat disenchanted with them. This cruise and one on Equinox earlier in the year have reversed our thinking. We booked this Panama Canal Transit on board over a year before the cruise, primarily to get a look at the expanded canal. While the ship cruised only on the original canal and we could see only the entrance to the new one, we're quite happy with the ship, the personnel, the food and the itinerary. Embarkation in Miami was a nightmare. This seemed to be caused by the need to sanitize the ship because of a few cases of narvovirus (?) on the previous cruise, the immigration requirements from that cruise coming from South America, and the inefficiency of the Miami terminal. Regardless, we were shuffled from one long line to another, with no obvious "plan". When we finally did board, though, as Concierge passengers we were treated to an excellent sit-down lunch in the main dining room. A very welcomed perk as opposed to the usual chaos in the Oceanview buffet. I'm sure suite and Aqua passengers were treated well also. For the past several years we had sailed only on the Solstice class ships, so we were a bit concerned about how we would adjust to the smaller Infinity. No problem. The ship has been modernized (except the shower stalls), is very well kept and attractive. The furniture is much more comfortable that that on the larger ships, the cabin large enough. The food was, by and large, quite good in all restaurants. An annoying change from prior sailings, though, was that the fixed time dining was moved to the upper level in the main dining room with the "Select" dining on the main floor. This created a crowded, noisy, and warm dining atmosphere on the upper level, with the servers apparently overloaded and slow., with little time for interaction with the passengers. We will go for Select in the future. The officers and staff we very friendly and available. The crew also. Special kudos to the Captain's Club Hostess, Kirsty. The itinerary was enjoyable, with a number of sea days to relax and some interesting ports to visit. I do wish we had stopped in Panama City instead of Colon, which is a dump. Entertainment was mixed. The on-board singers and dancers gave us three excellent shows. The other entertainers ranged from comedians to a flutist to a juggler. Some like 'em, some don't. Music in bars was sparse, but what was there was enjoyable. We booked only two excursions through the ship. Both awful. In Cabo we booked a whale watching tour, only to find after getting on board the tour boat, that they hadn't seen a whale in three days and they were probably gone north. We were treated to a two hour boat ride along the coast. When I complained back on Infinity I was told that the tour company is a separate company and Celebrity could do nothing. I understand the separation, but Celebrity sold the tour and they supposedly vet the tour companies. The other was the shuttle from the ship to the airport and three times the cab fare. At the airport we and our luggage were unceremoniously dumped on the sidewalk at the end of the terminal, with the Delta counter at the far other end. We won't book with Celebrity excursions again
