It was a long time I wanted to visit Patagonia and finally at the end of last year I decided to organize my trip. I was considering to do it on land and visit all the amazing places Patagonia has to offer but at the end it would have been stressful and laborious. Having checked all the possibilities I had, I decided to experience the modern luxury, as you call it, and put myself in the centre of the attention on board your ships. I studied the itinerary, it seemed to me very interesting and satisfying my desire to have a first glimpse at that magical part of the world - the scenic cruising in the Magellan`s strait, the glaciers, the ports in Chile where we would be able to admire the wildlife, volcanos, lakes and waterfalls and so on. It was a pity not to visit the Falkland islands even if we were so near, as Princess cruise line does, but it wasn`t a big problem anyway. The only thing I didn`t like very much were the early arrivals and the early departures in the afternoon in some of the ports but I would manage it. The worse thing we were informed was that the scenic cruising around Cape Horn would take place at 6 am, but I thought that maybe the nightlife on board would be so active that we would have rested after it. So, here we are, boarding in Valparaiso, some hours after we were supposed to, because the ship needed to be sanitized. We were grateful that the company was taking care of us even before boarding and tried not to think what kind of epidemy there had been. The queues were long and boarding process was not that fast but it is quite normal in ports that don`t have well-developed cruise terminals. Finally on board, ready to explore the lounges and have a drink after a fast shower and dressing up. After a short walk around I decide to enjoy the atmosphere at the Randez-vous lounge and had a seat at the bar. It was amazing, some people already dancing on some pleasant life music, the bar tenders and the waiters smiling, in an extremely good mood – that good that it made one of the bar tenders behind me laugh and burp loudly. I was so shocked that I turned around with a surprised face and he was just laughing……and burping!!! He needed a couple of minutes to understand that I wasn`t enjoying his solo part in the concert and I preferred listening to the band. This made a very strange impression to me but I thought it would be a company policy, that anybody could say “Hello” to the new guests in his own way, according to his own culture maybe. I don`t remember his name, but anyway, I don’t really need it as I wouldn`t invite him to my place for another convert like this. Next step – Trellis restaurant. The girls at the reception were extremely kind and they did ad amazing job. They managed to fulfil all my requests during the whole cruise. I was led to my table and I got to know my waiter for that night – Jorge from Colombia and his assistant Hery. He was amazing, did a professional service and the most important thing was, that I manage to capture that he loved his job. So I decided not to change my sector anymore. I loved the way that guy worked and behaved. I didn`t want to have a surprise with another waiter that might have decided to say “Hello” according to his own culture after the experience at the bar. And I really made the right choice, because a couple that was on board had an extremely unkind experience after deciding to change their table. The waiter that had served them the first night saw them on another table and he had the “brilliant” idea to ask them what would happen with his tip. This is bizarre!!! I wouldn`t have appreciated it at all, should it have happened to me. Having ordered the meal, the sommelier arrived. She was really nice and gentle and I asked her to have a look at the wine list. A big choice of wines, some good quality ones fortunately. I was really surprised with the prices, more than 10 USD for a glass of average quality wine seemed to me quite a lot. Anyway, I ordered a glass of medium quality Malbec wine, but she informed me that they didn`t have any kind of Malbec on board. What a pity! I decided not to keep on testing her on the wine list and asked her to suggest me something similar that they have on board. She was great, brought to me a glass of Carmenere. Pity I hadn`t bought 2 bottles of the same wine some hours before for the same price I paid for the glass. After dinner I decided to have an Espresso. I live in Italy and we have our habits there, a good ristretto after dinner is compulsory. When the bill arrived, it was a surprise – 4,15 USD for the coffee, 4,15 USD for a small bottle of Perrier and 6 USD for a litre of still water. It is the price of modern luxury but I don`t remember having payed it even in the Park Hyatt. So I seriously considered buying a drink package, with this prices it was definitely worth. Having left the restaurant, I decided to go around the bars, check the different menus and have some information about the different drink packages. What a surprise!! No menus around, no general information about the differences in the packages and many smiling bar tenders and waiters who were offering a package without giving any clear information of what was included exactly. It was not possible to see which were the premium and not premium drinks, check the price of the cocktails because the menus had to be sanitized. And they didn`t appear for a week or so. Printing new ones would have been definitely faster! And so, the next day at sea I decided to buy a package. I spoke with a bar tender that was at a desk selling packages at the entrance of the buffet. He was trying to sell me the premium alcoholic package but I explained to him I wasn`t interested as if I usually don`t drink too much. I wanted to buy a package that included coffee, water, soft drinks and virgin cocktails. He insisted that if I wasn`t interested in the frozen drinks, the classical non-alcoholic package would fit my needs perfectly. And it was done. I went directly to take an espresso at the pool bar but I found out they weren`t making any there. What a pity! It was only possible to take it at deck 5 at the coffee bar. And what if you are in a bathing suit and want a good espresso instead of black American coffee?! Well, fortunately they resolved it, a coffee station at the pool deck appeared the day after. The same evening I went to my favourite Randez-vous lounge for a virgin Bloody Merry but they kindly explained to me that with my package I couldn`t take any virgin cocktails. Only coffee, water and juices. Isn`t the virgin Bloody Merry just some tomato juice at the end?! But at the end I had to make an upgrade. Everybody was giving me completely different information and I didn`t want to argue and explain every time that I was told I could take anything but frozen drinks when I bought it. The next day in Puerto Montt was very nice. I had organized an excursion by myself in an agency on land and I had a very nice tour around paying half price compared to what the excursion office on board was asking, or even less. Prices for the excursions were extremely high. Except for some special ones, most of them were common excursions that every agency on land was offering. It was enough just to write an email and book in advance. The days after we were supposed to have a scenic cruising. It was beautiful to enter the Magellan strait. Pity it was already in the afternoon and soon it was dark. So we did a great part of the strait without the possibility to enjoy the scenic cruising. But the worst thing was, that to admire the best part, the glaciers before arriving in Ushuaia, we had to wake up at 4 am, admire the views until 6 am and the wait for the arrival in Ushuaia at 10 am. Perfect planning I should say! And I was upset with waking up at 6 am to admire Cape Horn – at least this was announced from the very beginning. Anyway, everything was going quite well until the last Evening Chic night when I had an unpleasant conversation with a supervisor of the cleaning service. Unfortunately, smoking is prohibited everywhere on board apart from a place on the 4th deck near the bars and 2 places at the pool deck. The weather in Patagonia is not always good and it gets really cold even in summer. But to smoke a cigarette all the smokers on board had to go out. And that night all the seats and the 2 tables were completely wet. I complained at the reception desk and the supervisor and a cleaner came very fast. The gentleman tried to explain to me that it was because of the humidity and I should have gone on the 10th deck to smoke. There the conditions would have been better. And I was told that I had to be grateful for having a choice of 2 places where I could have a cigarette. Crew members only have one! Well I didn`t even make a comment on that. What should I have said? And was it that difficult to create a cigar room last year during the dry dock and maybe renovate the lounges and furniture (it was really necessary)? Actually, it didn`t seem at all that the ship had been in dry dock just an year ago. The cleaner did his job very fast this time, quite unusual because they are usually saving their energy, being rather slow with their movements around and not careful at all. But I can understand it, they might be very tired. I don`t know how many hours a day they should work but I don`t think this should change the quality of their job. They were sanitizing continuously all the public places as well as putting something on the cabin doors. And I can assure you it was unpleasant when your hand remained wet with sanitizing product opening the door. Wiping and drying after applying it wouldn`t have been bad. The sanitizing product they were using in the elevators was making the buttons sticky. The wooden parts of the bars were sticky for the same reason. No germs and viruses but unpleasant feeling anyway. And we are almost at the end. The ports in Uruguay were nice, Punta del este and Montevideo are worth a visit. Pity we had to leave Punta del este so early in the afternoon and arrive in Montevideo that early in the morning. The distance of something more than 100 km was really not that big. We just needed maybe a couple of hours to arrive. But anyway we were moving really slowly ahead all the afternoon and all night long. Finally Buenos Aires, we had overnight but I preferred to get back to the ship for dinner, wanted to say goodbye to many people that made me happy during the cruise, passengers and some of the staff members. After dinner there was a farewell party going on at the Martini bar. The situation was really nice and everybody was enjoying and having fun. One of the guys from the entertainment team was in an extremely good mood, I suppose he was slightly tipsy as well. He asked me what were the plans for later and I answered that we were going out clubbing. And he just told me not to do it, to stay on board so that he can party with me, actually he told me he would do “everything” with me. What did it mean? I didn`t go further and I just told him that he had to be careful and try to behave, being tipsy on duty could have created him problems if seen by officers or security. Well, the answer was quite surprising. He told me this was his ship, he had stayed there for years and nobody could tell him anything. That` surprising as I know quite well the rules after all my experience as a guest and artist on board for a long time. My performings on board used to get very high score every time. Pity that the security that was always arguing with me when I was playing something for my friends in the lounges after almost everybody was already gone and the bars were closed, even if we were quiet and with a civil behaviour, wasn`t there to check the conditions of the staff members on duty. And as if I didn`t talk to him any longer, he just went to my friend and her 17 years old daughter and asked to have some fun later in a secret place he knew. That was brave! And the report was done this time. It was over, leaving the room at 8 am and being obliged to leave the ship before 9.45 was hard. But you didn`t have any other choice anyway. And as if I am that insane, I decided to book another Celebrity cruise while I was on board. I requested my cruise by filling in the form, signed it and left it in the Future Cruise office on board. I didn`t have any confirmation of the booking but I noticed that the deposit had been withdrawn from my credit card. I had to call different times the call centre. They were insisting that there was no booking on my name. Finally, a week after, somebody managed to find a sailing on my name, but on a different ship and with different sailing dates. It costed me time and different calls and emails to resolve this situation and to get the booking I wanted. Before the cruise I was really excited and curious about the experience with Celebrity. As if hope never dies, I think it was just an exception and my next experience will be perfect. I didn`t consider myself that old-fashioned, but if this is the modern luxury I prefer the old one.

What is modern luxury?
