Diamond Princess Cruise Review by rmglhorne
- Sail Date: March 2017
- Destination: Asia
- Cabin Type: Mini-Suite with Balcony
I arranged two private tours, one to Bangkok the other to Saigon and met two other couples who joined us on the tours.
We have travelled on the ship before and I noticed no real difference in 5 years. Cabins were excellent, clean and tidy and kept up to date daily by our excellent cabin steward Dennis Gambay.
We ate breakfast in the International Dining Room most mornings as we found the Buffet very crowded and difficult to get a table for 6. Excellent service and varied menu.
Lunch was mostly around the Neptune Bar as again Buffet very crowded.
We had Anytime Dining and ate most nights at the Sante Fe Restaurant. We had the same table most nights by turning up around 7 pm and found the Maitre de most helpful. He got to know us and kept the same table for us most nights..
We found the food very average. Not a great choice and during the second half of the cruise the menu included more Asian dishes which was to accommodate the increase in Asian passengers who joined the second half of the cruise.
We ate twice at the Sterling Steak House. The food there was excellent, steaks to die for.
The entertainment was very average. We only attended two shows and were not impressed. As we ate most nights around 7 pm the timing of the shows meant we were mostly too late to catch them. We attended trivia most afternoons and were chuffed to win on two occasions.
The service overall we found excellent. Waiters were very friendly, bar staff good and as I have mentioned our Cabin Steward was very good.
We organised our own shore excursions as it seems to be on most cruise lines the ship costs very high. Our private trip to Saigon cost us US$60.00 per person. The identical ships tour was US$159.99 per person. Thank goodness for Cruise Critic so we can contact like minded people.
The only down side was the Immigration situation in Singapore. I understand Princess has no control over what happens, howeve,r it is most annoying to have to wait in a line for an hour then the same again to get on and off in Singapore half way through the cruise.
Would we travel with Princess again ? This was our 3rd cruise with Princess. Our last 4 cruises have been with Oceania and although they are certainly more expensive they were far superior to the Princess experience. It was because of the vouchers we chose Princess, however, I think its back to Oceania.
