  3. Regal Princess
We've only cruised once before, and that was on Holland America. That trip was spoiled completely by the chainsmoker on the balcony below us. I chose this cruise on Princess because of their smoking policy, and I can say I had only two or three "whiffs" of cigarette smoke the entire cruise and that was outside. Wonderful! I found the embarkation method to be very well done. First off, they took our luggage right away which was greatly appreciated. Then we were lined up in a queue that took us to a counter to get checked in and got a group sticker and our room keys. After that, we were sent to a large room with chairs and restrooms to wait to get on the ship. We had our group number called and were let on board, where we went straight to our cabin. I was surprised to see our luggage OUTSIDE our door instead of inside the cabin, but there it was. The first thing we did was book dining at Sabatini's for that night in order to avoid the first night chaos. It was wonderful! The waiter was very nice and the food was excellent. It was well worth the $29.00 per person charge. We were surprised that the restaurant wasn't busier, but we were told that the first night was usually slow. Our first port was Newport, RI. We didn't want to go on an excursion because we wanted to just walk around the town, which we found to be really nice. Being from a Southern California beach city, we found that East Coast beach cities are the same as West Coast beach cities except the water is on the wrong side! We visited the shops and had a nice lunch, then back to the ship to do some exploring. The ship is HUGE! And BEAUTIFUL! I'd booked an aft cabin, so to get anywhere we had to do a lot of walking, which we're used to because we're annual pass holders to Disneyland and we do a LOT of walking there. The Regal has tons of wonderful entertainment and things to do. Their Cruise Director is Martyn Moss, who is a lot of fun. Their singers and dancers are very good, and their shows were really well done. We weren't all that impressed with their piano playing "comedian" who seemed to need a lot of forced applause. Boston - Had a hop on hop off bus tour that I booked directly saving some money. The tour and guide was great but we were very disappointed with Boston. It's all torn up with giant skyscrapers just barfed onto the earth with no respect to continuity, the city or its history. Bar Harbor - Another small little beach town that we had fun exploring. Had whole lobster for lunch and took advantage of their "end of season" sales! St. John's, New Brunswick, Canada - Zip lining over the Bay of Fundy was the best! Halifax, Canada - Took another hop on hop off bus tour to see this amazing city. It's beautiful, the people are very friendly, and I could live there. We enjoyed St. John's immensely. New York - We didn't go through the customary debarkation because we had a city tour excursion afterwards due to a late flight (4:45pm). We enjoyed the tour! Saw Times Square, Wall Street, Central Park, stood in front of Macy's and ate in a New York Deli. What's not to love? In all, Princess Regal is a great ship and we had a great time. As for the food... We were surprised at the lack of room service items. The breakfast menu is poor with no hot items. There is NO dinner room service unless you want to pay $100.00 for it. The buffet food was buffet food and buffet food is never all that good. Under seasoned and bland. The main dining room food was "okay", but could use some herbs and salt. Alfredo's Pizzeria was excellent as was the wait staff! I didn't go to the Crown Grill because I can more than likely do a steak better (I'm culinary school trained). My SO is a trained bartender and was very critical of their drinks. Especially when we ordered a Drambuie neat and had a cocktail glass delivered to us with less than 1/4" of product in it. To give credit where credit is due, Holland America has better food, bars, and in-room menus. All in all, we went on the cruise for the experience and to see other places, not to eat. We were very entertained, the staff was friendly and we are going to cruise with Princess again. I do have two bad things to say, however. I gave Princess my credit card number. Not only do I have charges on my card for the daily charges for drinks, specialty restaurant and excursions, but I also have their TOTAL amount as well. The daily charges are pending and are not falling off. After speaking to Princess, they said to talk to my credit card company. My credit card company says to speak to Princess. Grrrrrr. Also, I went to their Future Cruises Department and placed a $100.00 deposit on a future cruise only to have my credit card charged $200.00! They said they made TWO future deposits. One for me and one for my SO. It's taken 3 phone calls to get them to say they'll refund my card for the additional $100.00 IN THIRTY DAYS. Is this normal???

Cabin Review

Deluxe Balcony
Cabin DD D722
We had a deluxe balcony cabin, which was a lot smaller than the suite we had on Holland America, but it was nice. Yes, the bathroom was very small, but we managed with that as well. We liked that our luggage fit under the bed, and that we were given plenty of hangers. And the bed was very comfy. Our steward was nice and pleasant, but not as attentive as the one on Holland. We figured it was because we weren't in a suite.

  • Bar Harbor
Had this day planned WELL in advance. We got off the tender and went DIRECTLY to West Street Cafe for a whole big lobster lunch. Then we knocked around that town again taking advantage of the end of season sales and doing our best to enhance the town's economy. It's our duty!

  • City Tour
Did the hop on hop off bus tour. Our guide was great and it shows that he loves his city. I was very disappointed with Boston. Every street was torn up with construction going on. The city's architecture looks like it was planned by someone on a bad acid trip. There was no respect given to the history of the area. We stopped off at Faneuil Hall & Quincy Marketplace and had a great lunch, but other than the building being old, it was just another mall with chain stores.

Loved Halifax! The guide was excellent, and you could tell she loves her city. I learned a lot about Halifax and would really like to go back to spend some time there.

We didn't go through the customary debarkation because we had a city tour excursion afterwards due to a late flight (4:45pm). We enjoyed the tour! On this tour we didn't just sit on the bus and have the guide say "And over here we have..." we made several stops and got off the bus for x amount of minutes and did our own thing. Saw Times Square, Wall Street, Central Park, The 9/11 Memorial, stood in front of Macy's and ate in a New York Deli. What's not to love?

We wanted to just knock around in the city and do some shopping "in an effort to enhance the city's economics" which we did! They have some great shops and I was very pleasantly surprised to find that most shops were having an end of season sale. Yay!

Zip-a-dee-do-dah! This was a blast! The zip lines were shorter than expected, but it was a lot of fun.
