Itinerary was interesting, took us to parts of Alaska most cruise ships avoid. In fact, except for Ketchikan and Juneau, we were the only ship in port. We like Holland America because they include a locations guide, in this case a native Alaskan, which enhances the trip experience. Also find enjoyable and beneficial are the digital workshops that Holland America does in conjunction with Microsoft and teaches not only Windows 10 but how to use your digital camera to best effect and how to edit pictures. The crew over all is outstanding and does everything possible to make it an enjoyable cruise experience. Nearly all of the excursions were first rate. And having previously been in Ketchikan, Juneau and Sitka, over a decade ago, we were amazed by how many additional excursions were offered. (And most of them were not prohibitive.) We highly recommend this wonderful 2 week Alaskan cruise during which time we saw many glaciers, bald eagles, otters, sea lions, whales and harbor seals..

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Prince William Sound Cruise
Took the bus from Anchorage--there was a free shuttle into town that dropped us a couple blocks away--. Our driver/guide was excellent and we learned a lot about the area between Anchorage and Whittier. The 26 Glacier tour, despite marginal weather was outstanding. In addition to getting close to a couple of the glaciers we see bald eagles, sea lions and harbor seals, in addition to a kittiwaite rookery. Would do it again.

  • Homer
Took hop-on hop-off bus into town. Visited the local museum and did a little shopping in a couple of the stores on the main street. Later walked around the Spit and stopped in a local bar for some Alaskan beer.

  • Culinary Tour
Jeff the guide was outstanding. A local whose family had been there for generations was incredibly informative and pleasant and offered us insights into how Alaskans manage to eat off the land and from the sea and its coast and life in the community.

  • Mendenhall Glacier
This was part 2 of one tour. The trip to the glacier was very good. had a chance to walk the mile path to a waterfalls close to the glacier and a little time to see salmon returning to spawn.

  • Whale Watching
The whale watching was first rate. The crew was quite knowledgeable and pleasant . Though we never saw whales breaching, did have the rare opportunity to see them bubble feeding.

  • Rainforest Hike
The hike on Betton Island was educational and quite pleasant. Did see some bald eagles on the way. But the trip was over-sold in that it promoted more encounters with wildlife than we experienced.

  • Kodiak
Took the highlights of Kodiak trip. Other than the trip to Fort Abercrombie, could have done it on our own: visiting the Baranov Museum and the Orthodox Church. (There was a shuttle into town.) It was vastly over-priced. Later went to the Wildlife Museum--across the street from the Baranov-- and then walked around Kodiak and visited the local brewery where we sampled some of their beers, including sipping Sarah Pale Ale.

  • Seattle
Prior to boarding, we spent the morning wandering around Pike Street Market and taking a ride on the ferris wheel. Later, we took a cab to the dock, which was a bit north of Seattle. (It was a $20 cab ride with the tip.) Boarding was very easy. Then, again, we avoided the rush and boarded 2 hours before sailing. We breezed through the process.

  • Wildlife Tour
Outstanding trip. Provide binoculars--as did all of the other water excursions--and got to see eagles and rafts of male and female otters. The trips to the Fortress of the Bear and then to the Raptor Center were very good.

  • Butchart Gardens
Burchart Gardens is truly an impressive grounds. Only quibble from one who doesn't know one flower from another that a little more signage designating types of flowers would have been appreciated. The ride to and from with a knowledgeable local was also welcome. We booked this at the last minute, after taking a shuttle into Victoria: at our stop a tour bus was leaving for the Gardens within the next couple of minutes and so we signed up for it.

  • Whale Watching
The boat was tied up a couple hundred yards from our ship: quite convenient. The boat had binoculars and the crew was outstanding. Did get to see a pod of Orcas and then later some sea lions.
