We chose this cruise for its ports of call. And we were very pleased with ALL of the ports. It was a great sized ship as we were able to dock at ALL of the ports, no tenders--Yipee. Embarkation and disembarkation were extremely smooth. The food was average. Some too salty, some of the meats too fatty and chewy. In the main dining room fish one night was "fishy" tasting. Crew was fabulous. Everyone friendly and helpful. There was a lot to do one the ship especially on the sea days. Something for everyone. The entertainment was great. Really enjoyed the singers and dancers and the HAL Cats band. The Ocean Bar had a great trio most nights. The computer classes by Meghan were superior--great idea & service and great teacher. The Thermal Spa was a little disappointing as it was smaller than the other HAL ships. Also the Women's locker room doors seemed to remain open most of the time despite repeatedly complaining and repeatedly closing them each time I was in there. The Women's locker room opens to the hallway on one side and into the spa with treatment rooms directly across and adjoining the locker rooms. Once, while I was dressing, a staff member paraded a MALE thru the women's locker room as it was faster to get out of the spa that way! We were locked out of our room for over 3 hours waiting for the locksmith. The key mechanism's battery had died. The shore excursions were wonderful. There were choices for everyone's ability and interest. We took one on each port and they never failed to please us. Great guides who are friendly and informative. I took my sister for a "big number" birthday celebration. There were to celebrate it in the dining room on the first Gala Night and failed to do so. When spending this much money for a Veranda Suite, it should be in perfect condition. Also HAL had advertised that ALL of the Suites on all ships had new coffee makers and Bose Docking Speakers. Our suite DID NOT have them.

Ports of Call & Excursions Fabulous, Ship Cabins need work.

Cabin Review

Vista Suite with Verandah
Cabin BA 181
The cabins need ANOTHER makeover. Our bathtub was disgustingly old. The fixtures in the bath area were rusted. Our veranda was also rusty and had peeling paint. One wall had a huge gash in it and the patch was worse than if they had left it unrepaired.

No coffee maker and Bose Docking Speaker system as advertised.
Verandah Deck Inside Cabins, Outside Cabins, Balcony Cabins

  • Homer
I took the tour that takes you across the bay (30 minute boat taxi) and hiked about 5 or 6 miles to a lake and glacier. Beautiful views and wonderful guides and water taxi gals!!

  • Wildlife Tour
Fun drive, interesting an informative guides. Unfortunately, mother nature did not cooperate as the salmon were NOT running therefore, no bears---which was what we went for. Nonetheless, we saw lots of fresh bear Poop!! So we know there were watching us. We felt safe as we had 2 armed guards to protect us.

  • Kodiak
The tour we wanted was full, so we walked the town. Good museum and churches to see. I think this is an "up and coming" port and they should offer more tours because it is gorgeous.

  • City Tour
What fun this day! Fun, young kids for guides. Bike was fairly easy--2 1/2 mile over rolling hills, then about 1 mile hike to a lake, then bike back for 2 1/2 mile. The equipment was first class. Good bikes, good helmets and rain gear as well (luckily we really only had a light "spritz"!)

We took the 3.5 hour mini tour of town combined with 2 hours at Buchart Gardens. The time was just about right. The Gardens are on your own, but easy walking and soooo beautiful! Glad we went!
