We had had 4 nights in Copenhagen before the cruise with an AFS daughter having travelled from New Zealand with a fortnight stop in the UK to see families. So when we arrived at the port to embark we were really in "Holiday Mode" having had a really enjoyable pre-cruise holiday with family. We arrived at the port by taxi and had a very easy passage from the taxi on to the ship, cases were whisked away and we carried our "carry-on" into the hall where everything went well as we were Platinum and no one was waiting in the Platinum line. Straight to the main dining room for a lazy lunch before going to out stateroom to unpack. I spent quite a lot of time in the pool and walking round the deck, needed to make sure I didn't put on more than the regulation 1lb a day!! We ate in the MDRs for all three meals a day and had exactly 1 meal that we could make any adverse comment about. We really enjoyed our food, the service was great and we were able to order extra that were not always on the menu, notably crackers & cheese instead of dessert. We were in an Inside Cabin low down in the ship and were very happy with it as we could sleep whenever we wanted, rest many afternoons, with it nice and dark. No noise at night to disturb us either. We enjoyed taking an NCL arranged tour every day we were able, expensive but generally great. We were sick and were unable to do the St Petersburg tours we had booked, luckily we knew early enough and were able to cancel in time to get a refund. Pity though we were unable to get into Stockholm, we were looking forward to that. We didn't take part in many arranged activities but my wife did enjoy those she went to. We did enjoy the "get togethers" to meet the crew etc. She did enjoy all of the evening entertainments, she went most nights, not my thing. She would have preferred less repetition in the two cruises. Disembarkation was very easy as we were carrying our own luggage and were in no hurry as we had arranged to meet our AFS daughter at lunchtime at her house. It was easy to get a taxi when we wanted. All in all we had a really great time spoiled a little by horrible colds that lasted 3 days.

  • Alesund
We really liked the trip out, it was very different to what we had done before. The Giske Church was so good we would have loved to have stayed longer, the story teller was excellent and the church was really interesting. Then all turned pear-shaped, the rain really settled in!! We would have loved to have the visit to the lighthouse on a dry and fine day and again to have had more time to take in all that was available.

  • Troldhaugen and Fantoft Stave Church
I would have loved giving this two ratings. The Fantoft Stave Church was really good; we could have stopped there a lot longer just taking in the ambience but there were more groups arriving and we had to move on!! Rating Excellent.
Then Troldhagen; we enjoyed this in part; again having to move through too quickly. We were very disappointed that there was none of Grieg's music being played throughout the house or museum/shop. Rating Good

  • Geiranger
Would have been excellent if we could have gone up the mountain but we were there early in the season. Eagle Road was very interesting, just like some NZ roads but with snow!! As we couldn't go to the top of the hills we had a very enjoyable time in the farmhouse. We had had brown goats cheese previously and was really interested in how it was made and were happy to make its "acquaintance" again. A very enjoyable day and very informative about life in rural Norway.

  • Soumenlinna Island Fortress
the Island itself, and the boat to and from, were excellent. We would have liked longer on the island as we had too little time in the museum after the walk round. The guide was excellent, knowledgeable and able to impart the information.
When we got back to the pier at the appointed time having taken the boat we were supposed to the tour soured very quickly. We had to wait nearly an hour to be taken back to the ship, we did not want to hang round with no one knowing what was happening.
The information on the NCL website stated "At the end of the tour, you can remain in the downtown area to explore the city on your own or return by your bus to the cruise pier. Should you decide to remain in the city, you'll be responsible for your own return to the cruise pier." That did not happen as written.

  • Upper Town and Kadriorg Palace
Disgusted by the actions of some tourists in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, would have loved to have been able to spend more time there as there was so much to look at. Pity it was a Sunday and the Cathedral was in use. Far too many tourist there and in the old town all at the same time.
In the Kadriorg too much time was taken up by the guide rabbiting on when almost all of the group would have preferred to wander and take in what they wanted to examine. It was also crowded but it was interesting to sit and watch the locals enjoying the early summer sun in the lower garden.
