I have been on cruises with three other cruise lines, and this was my first cruise with Celebrity. I was not disappointed by the ship and the cruise, but I was not really impressed either. We had an Oceanview cabin. I liked the large window. I did not like that there was a connecting door to the next cabin, and we could hear every little noise our neighbor made. We were pretty underwhelmed by the buffet. It was the least exciting of any ship I've been on. The lunch and dinner buffet mostly served the same food, and it was the same small selection every single day and night. They really push their specialty restaurants that cost more money. Every time you turn around on the ship, someone is trying to sell you a dinner reservation. The food in their main dining room is absolutely excellent. I was never let down by my meal. I would not recommend their shore excursions. They were a huge rip off. Every one was super rushed, packed with people, and way too expensive. The only shore excursions I was happy with on our trip were ones that we booked with outside parties. I would suggest doing your research ahead of time and booking your own tours through local companies.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Acropolis
Again, this is another place where we should not have taken an excursion with the ship. We went to the Acropolis. Our tour was large and the guide didn't want to wear her headset lest she mess up her hair. The Acropolis was extremely crowded and hot in the sun. We had about 20 minutes to walk around at the top before we had to make our way back to the bus. There are much better, more affordable ways to get to the Acropolis. A public bus, X80, picks up from the port. There is also a hop on, hop off bus tour that picks up at the port. If I could do it over, I would go with that option. There is not much within walking distance of the port so I wouldn't bother with that.

  • Achilleion Palace
Don't bother booking the Paleokatsriza, Achilleion Palace, and Old Town tour with the ship. We were excited by the photos of the Paleokatsriza beach area used to advertise the tour. We wore our swimsuits hoping to go in the water. But our bus stopped in front of the beach for 30 seconds so we could take a photo from the bus and then continued it. We felt it was very misleading to include Paleokatsriza in the title of the tour. We then had 20 minutes at a monastery before continuing on to Achilleion Palace. The building and its history were moderately interesting, but again we were rushed through. The tour ended at Corfu Town. Though Old Town was part of the name of the tour, the bus stopped just outside the old town and we were told we had 20 minutes to go look around and get back to the bus. The whole tour was extremely rushed and a huge rip off. I wish we would have just walked to town from the port and explored on our own.

  • Crete (Heraklion)
We had booked a snorkeling excursion but the weather didn't cooperate and it was canceled. So we walked around the Venetian port in Chania, ate at restaurant, and went shopping. Not terribly exciting, but it is a cute town and a nice place to relax.

  • Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik exceeded my already high expectations. It is beautiful both from a natural and history perspective. We took the ship's shuttle ($12 per person) to the old city. We started by walking the wall and then ventured into the city to eat lunch and poke around. I wish we had several days there. I don't see any need to book a tour since it is so easy to walk around.

  • Istanbul
Do not bother with an excursion; the main sites are very easy to do on your own. Walk, take a tram, or take a taxi to the old city. Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern, and Topkapi Palace are in the same area and the Grand Bazaar is a short walk away. We were there on a weekday in the off-season so we didn't have any problems with lines or crowds. We were able to do all but Topkapi Palace in a half day. Our time in Istanbul was cut short for security reasons, so we had to rush a bit. I suggest two days in Istanbul would be sufficient to see the sites.

  • Katakolon (Olympia)
We took the train to Olympia from Katalon. It was 10 euros a person round trip. From the port, go right and keep walking to the other side of the town until you see it near the water. It was a nice and easy way to travel, but unfortunately they only had one departure and one return, and they only gave us a couple of hours in Olympia. I really enjoyed the ruins and museum and would have liked another hour or so. There is plenty of signage at the site so I didn't feel like I was missing out without a guide.

  • Oia Wine Tasting
We took an excursion with Shore Excursions Group called Exclusive Santorini, Oia and Winery Tour booked through Orbitz. They picked us up in a boat from the port and brought us to a bus. We first went to the highest point on the island for incredible views, then stopped an a winery for a tasting and snacks. We had plenty of time to walk around in Oia and then were dropped off in Fira where we had lunch before taking the cable car back to port. It was one of our favorite stops on the cruise. Santorini is so unique!

  • Krka National Park
We took a ship excursion to Krka National Park to see the waterfalls. As with other Celebrity excursion, our time was really rushed. (My theory is they don't want to have the tours go over the lunch hour because then they would have to include lunch.) I had researched other ways to get to Krka though, and the ship excursion seemed to be our best option so we are glad we went. The park is absolutely gorgeous and worth the trip. I even got into the water to go swimming, but be warned: the water is full of large rocks and it is rather difficult to get in and out of the water.
