  3. Norwegian Sky
I cruised with my husband – I am 51 and he is late 40’s. This was my 10th cruise and his 8th. We have cruised on Royal, Carnival, Princess and two other NCL ships. We chose this cruise on the Sky as a quick getaway since we live in Florida. We got a great deal that included the Ultimate Beverage Package and I felt the overall value for this cruise price-wise was great for the short getaway we planned. The ship is small and older but I found it to be very pretty, easy to get around and very clean. Most of the employees were friendly and helpful with the huge exception of the bar servers. Since we had the beverage package this was particularly disappointing. It is the primary cause for the low rating. Embarkation – This was easy. We arrived at 11:30 and were on board eating lunch within an hour. Staterooms weren’t ready until almost time for the safety drill. The drill took quite a bit of time and it was extremely hot. Disembark was also fast. Cabin – We chose an Inside cabin and we usually have a balcony but this one was a budget minded getaway and this cabin suited its purpose. It was weird to us that we never saw the cabin steward except once by chance. He did his job but didn’t really go out of his way or engage with us as we are used to on other NCL ships and other lines. I wouldn’t get an inside cabin for any cruise longer than 3 or 4 days but this one was adequate for a short time. Dining: We had breakfast at the buffet most days getting omelets freshly made and enjoyed eating at the Great Outdoors at the back . We could always find a table. We had dinner in the main dining room a couple times. The service and food were great the first time. The second time the Prime Rib was just bloody even though I ordered it Medium Rare. They replaced it graciously but it was still way too raw to eat. The seafood bisque was also disappointing – it was like canned tomato soup with sardines in it. The buffet was just fine for lunch, other dinners and snacks. We really enjoyed the poolside barbecues and the lunch on Great Stirrup Cay as well. We got room service every morning just to get coffee and a pastry. The coffee was the worst ever and now with the new service fee you can’t even get cold cereal without paying the $7.95 fee so we didn’t order it – the choices are extremely limited to avoid this charge. I am not happy about that change. I will say that they were on time every day. Bar Service: Absolute worst bar service on any cruise ever!. I was absolutely stunned at how truly awful it was. Every bar we went to was bad. They were understaffed. Some of the bartenders would just ignore people – we watched one guy take inventory while another tried to wait on people by himself at the very busy pool bar. No organization, no teamwork, no common sense. None of the bartenders were friendly or remembered our names or drinks like on other Norwegian cruises. Plus we never got an actual COLD beer the entire cruise. We tried tipping at first but that didn’t improve the service. One bartender even told the crowd of maybe eight of us that he was “on island time” and we would just have to wait. Mixed drinks were inconsistently prepared. This ship is supposed to convert to free drinks all the time in 2016 – I cannot imagine how they will handle that with this horrible staff but I cancelled the cruise I had booked on this ship for 2016 so I won’t have to find out. Maintenance Issue: On the last day of the cruise when we were in port, there was a problem with the plumbing. After breakfast, I went to eight (8) different public ladies rooms and none of them was working. After the first three I spoke to a crew member who told me it was a maintenance issue and directed me to the pool area. That restroom didn’t work either and I called maintenance who told me the one near the disco was working but when I got there it wasn’t. So basically during this time I went up and down from deck to deck numerous times with no relief and encountered numerous other ladies facing the same problem! This went on from approximately 9:40 a.m. to nearly noon! I am glad I am fairly healthy and could “hold it” but many people just used these toilets anyway and they were pretty gross. I was pretty ticked off that the announcements constantly told me where I could buy art or play bingo but didn’t say a word about this critical maintenance/hygiene issue. Boo Norwegian. It rained a lot on this cruise too which is not their fault at all. A rainy cruise is still better than a week at the office, however we had another cruise booked on the Sky for 2016 and we promptly cancelled it when we returned from this one. I am still a fan of Norwegian and going on the Star in November and the Escape in December – can’t wait!!! Reviews will follow.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Snorkeling
Booked independently with Seahorse Sail and Snorkel. Not as advertised. They had way too many people. They claim to be less crowded than ship excursions but we were joined by nearly 40 people from the ship and another dozen from Atlantis. Poor equipment - my vest leaked. When I asked about their "money back guarantee" they argued with me and didn't call me back the next day as promised. A week later they emailed me for feedback. I provided feedback again and was finally offered a 25% refund. I will never book with them again.

  • Great Stirrup Cay
Beautiful island and great service at the lunch hut. Really enjoyed the lunch. Only problem was it rained and all the bars closed early without notice. No storm or lightning or anything, but we were all trying to hang out there to get out of the rain and they just rudely pulled down the shades at 2:30...
