  3. Emerald Princess
Wow....where to start ??? I guess I will start with the good. The Emerald Princess is a beautiful ship. All of the public areas are just wonderful...and they all seemed to be spotlessly clean. The Explorers Lounge which many shows were held in was very comfortable, but not large enough for some of the shows held there..My personal thought on this is that the Princess Theater was underused, which resulted in a lot of people not getting seats, but trying to see shows while standing in the hallway. The same held true for Club Fusion where they also had shows where they could not accommodate everyone. Our stateroom was nice and comfortable enough, although I do wish Princess would come up with more comfortable chairs for those of us that like to spend time in our rooms. That holds true on almost all of the Princess Ships, not just this one. The New Year's Eve Party onboard was fun and a great party atmosphere.... The Trident Grill (hamburger) and The Pizza Grill were both very good and since they were open much later than we were used to, it was a nice surprise !! I found the food typical cruise food for the most part. I don't expect gourmet dining considering that they are cooking for the masses, and during several meals, I was pleasantly surprised. My biggest complaint was the menu which was more limited in choices and unappetizing choices than previous Princess Cruises. We ordered off the always available items more often than not. I felt they did do a nice job in the Horizon Court Buffet as well, although the design does cause some confusion with lines going in too many directions all at once, and that causes a lot of congestion. As for entertainment, I felt that the Emerald Princess did a nice job, especially with the additional entertainment brought onboard. The production shows were typical Princess and done well enough, but when you cruise Princess as much as we do, you can only see "Motor City", as well as the other productions so many times. My biggest issue had nothing to do with Princess, but with the sheer number of kids onboard. Most cruises have some children onboard, but this particular cruise had (700 - 900) depending on who you asked, and that resulted in total chaos at all of the pool areas and hot tubs, as well as the elevators and other public areas. They all looked like public pools in any city park. Most spoke no or very little English and between the kids and their parents, there was not one pardon me or excuse me in the bunch. They bought tickets and had as much right to be there as we did, but it still took away from the vacation that we were expecting..so just something to be aware can happen, especially on a ship as big as this one. I felt that the ship employees overall were not of the same caliber as on previous Princess Ships. Now everyone did their job, but it was still way off..(with the exception of the DiVinci Dining Room head waiter, who was exceptional and a hard worker). I do not want to comment on or name individuals or cause them any problems, just be aware that the crew on this ship seems to not care as much as on previous cruises. We had a real issue with our room steward. We are always late to leave our room, and he was on break each day by the time we would leave. It has never been a problem before on other ships because the room steward always arranged for someone else to clean the room. This steward did not, and just left our room unattended until evening, until I went to the pursers desk and handled it through them and the housekeeping supervisor. Also, because we would carry the glasses out of the room like to dinner or on deck with us, he almost seemed as if he thought we were keeping them or something...no accusation mind you, just the way he made you feel when he had to get more. It was just always so uncomfortable to be around him or to have to ask him for anything. I would go to the bar to get ice, just to avoid asking him for it..as for the other employees you always felt that they were very unhappy to be there...but once again everyone did do their respective jobs...if you cruise a lot, you just notice when it is off... For those of you that attend Friends of Dorothy or GLBT gatherings, you will be disappointed on this ship. They start out in an outside bar on the back of the ship where it is crowded and not conducive to a group getting together to know one another.., so many people didn't even bother to stop, they just went on by....by the 3rd day, they did move it to the Adagio Lounge which was much nicer and more conducive to this type of gathering, but by that time, most had lost interest and even the crew member assigned to it lost interest, so it eventually just ended, and we were left without anything, so some of us got together on our own on the last sea day...just don't count on much support from the staff as on other Princess Cruises. Embarkation and Disembarkation. We were fortunate to be Platinum members. The line to check in was all the way down the side of the building, but they did have a separate line for Platinum and Elite, so check in was smooth for us. Other people were not so fortunate...Most times though, check in in Ft. Lauderdale goes rather smoothly. Disembarkation went smoothly as well, with the exception of being total chaos to get a taxi..so our advise to you is if you are going to the airport from the Ft. Lauderdale terminal, by all means use the Princess Bus Service. We were going to, but turned our forms in too late. I am not sure of who is in charge of the taxi part of the port, but all of the cruise ship companies management needs to pressure them for a better system. Bottom line...This is a beautiful ship with good entertainment, and a nice selection of bars and entertainment venues..It is a very large ship, so expect crowds in the public areas, pools, shows, etc......We decided that we will go for smaller ships after this experience with the crowds (except for one cruise we already have booked on the Ruby Princess), but we still think that Princess does an overall nice job for a middle of the road cruise line.
