This was only our third cruise all with Celebrity, first on Silhouette second on Reflection both excellent cruises and I would rate 5 stars. We chose Celebrity again as the layout of these ships and cabins are lovely as was the Equinox although a little tiredness showing in some areas as the ship is not quite as new as the others but still excellent. On the whole the cruise was good with good ports of call and no days at sea which we prefer. There was a problem getting onto the ship as their was a power outage all over the Rome area on embarkation and so the check-in was laboured with an hour plus on the coach and an extra hour within the checking in area, exhausting and hot but no problem as this was out of Celebritys control and they did a good job under the circumstances. The main issue was the service, on the previous cruises everyone had a smile and generally a pleasant customer service I didn't really find it on this cruise the MDR and bar staff were mainly unsmiling going through the motions attitude, I wasn't expecting the whole over the top cheesiness but a pleasant demeanour would of done. What grates with me as with many of you probably is the 18% gratuities on all bills, this dosent really come to light until you notice the poor performance then it does! You notice the difference when you have drinks and bites to eat in the restaurants and bars of your ports of call all a very nice experience because they are working for a tip and then you don't mind the couple of euros tip and there I think lies the problem the tips are all there already up front the bar staff don't really have an incentive to go the extra mile. We chose the select dining option in the MDR which gave us the flexibility of dining times but would not choose this again, it was disorganised and rushed with again poor service. I Also thought the dress code was relaxed too much in the evenings, Im not into getting dressed up in suits every night but a lot of sportswear and T shirts got through which I hadn't seen before. The positive side of things the stateroom steward and stewardess were excellent, immaculately kept our rooms and always pleasant and I had no issues tipping them on top of the standard tips. The food was excellent throughout the ship whether it be in the oceanview cafe or a speciality restaurant. We always like the Martini bar which is great layout with a good vibe around it. Whether we were just unlucky this time or it being height of the summer with a packed ship with over worked staff I really don't know but at the end of the day I don't really care Celebrity are advertising and charging for a premium service which in this case we did not fully get.

Service without a smile
