My wife and I wanted an Alaskan cruise to be the venue for our honeymoon. We searched for "best couples Alaskan cruise" and the Celebrity Solstice appeared on the top three to five on the various review sites we visited. We had a good experience on a two-night Carnival cruise to Ensenada and back but were looking for something more adult-oriented ... and Carnival's reputation has suffered a bit over the last couple years with epidemic illnesses on their ships. Celebrity was offering an attractive promotion when I booked in March. I think they call it a 1-2-3 GO package ... including $300 ship-board credit (we applied to excursions), gratuities and their Classic Beverage Package. The total price was reasonable though at the north end of the options. I had to make some changes to our reservation along the way and my only criticism of our entire Celebrity experience relates to the sloppy way one of their vacation planners handled my change request (she deleted my reservation before confirming an alternate sail date ... she was able to restore it fifteen anxiety-filled moments later and was remorseful for the mistake.) Our on-board experience was delightful in every regard. We stayed on the concierge level. Our room (including bathroom) was spacious with lots of storage space and a very comfortable bed (foam I believe). Our room included a balcony which we enjoyed daily. Our vacation planner booked us a room that faced east on the sail up to Skagway so we enjoyed majestic views from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day - thank you Daniel! Miguel was our stateroom attendant. He greeted us warmly shortly after we arrived and proved his sincerity every day keeping our room tidy and well-supplied ... including creative, whimsical towel sculptures (including a truly hilarious chimpanzee that I would attach a photo of here but do not see an attachment feature.) We slept in most days and keep the do not disturb sign on the door most of the day but somehow Miguel figured ways to get in and out of our room during our excursions and ensured we always returned to a orderly room - he is a true professional. Our dining and drinking experiences were beyond satisfying. The Solstice offers a range of restaurants and bars to choose from and I will include the highlights here: GRAND EPERNAY - the ship's main dining room; our sommelier Sandeep is a gem. His knowledge of wine is demonstrably vast and he radiates warmth and joy. He ensured our wines were paired with each course of our meals and educated us in the process. Head waiter Igusti and assistant Ivan struck the perfect balance of attentiveness, engagement and professionalism. They knew when to engage us in conversation and when to give us space to focus on each other. As was true of all of our engagements with Celebrity staff, we deeply enjoyed getting to know these two and appreciated their willingness to share their experiences with us. I should also mention receptionist Linda who protected our favorite table and got us in one night when we arrived a few minutes after closing. BISTRO - one of the ship's specialty restaurants that features crepe entrees and desserts (dangerously delicious!). We paid $10 per person which covered whatever we ordered. Waiters Carmenta and Movin were a joy and truly made us feel like they enjoyed our company. We arrived a little late one night but they waited on us without an sense of irritation or urgency. We also enjoyed a good conversation with general manager Abas who gave us some background on how Celebrity trains and promotes talent within its organization (we commented on the competence and genuine friendliness of the staff which prompted this conversation.) SILK HARVEST - the ship's Asian fusion restaurant. $35 per person charge covered whatever food we ordered ... which ended up being quite a bit. The restaurant also has an extensive sake menu ... which we also explored and enjoyed (which is why it is wise to have either a Classic or Premium drink package ... we upgraded to Premium about three days into cruise.) Waiters Mahayasa and Nur and general manager Goran enriched our experience with attentive, friendly service and interesting conversation. This company appears to excel and training, retaining and promoting talented employees. OCEAN VIEW CAFE - this is the 24-hour buffet space. Beyond the good to very good food we enjoyed in this space, Chandra, one of the restaurant's pasta cooks, was a sparkling gem. This sweet soul made a point to greet us with warm smile whenever we stopped by ... he even sang us a song on one of our visits! If he were not serving on this ship, he would be a perfect American Idol contestant. SKY LOUNGE - this is one of the ship's bar/lounges and is located at the front of the 14th-floor and offers amazing views. Equipped with elegant mood lighting, a good-sized dance floor, a performance stage and more-than-ample seating (including a handful of semi-circular draped seating areas with contemporary, comfortable chairs and sofas), this place would be packed were it located on land. However, it was empty when we discovered it late on one of our first nights. This lack of population turned turn our blessing as it enabled us to spend some time with the bartenders who staffed the space. Both men were friendly, attentive and competent in their trade. We spent a good amount of time with Shubert trading stories and learning about his experiences on the oceans. MARTINI BAR - the ship's most active bar staffed by a handful of extremely entertaining and skilled bartenders ... it seemed like bottles were flipping and spinning every time we stopped by ... these guys enjoy what they do and seem to sincerely enjoy serving their guests. The bar offers lots of seating which made it the perfect place to meet and spend time with the many new friends we made. I could go on but suffice it to say, we were impressed by the experience and touched by the warmth and service of the cruise staff. In fact, we booked another cruise with Celebrity next year (the line offers some incentives to passengers that book on-board that we took advantage of.)

Perfect honeymoon cruise made better by cruise staff!

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Hiking
25-minute bus ride to visitor center (and base of hiking trail). Tour guide Keith was very knowledgeable about the terrain and flora. He was a park ranger for many years and had lots of great stories. 6.5 mile hike through rain forest where we saw waterfalls and various views of Mendenhall Glacier. A good work out compared to sitting on bus or helicopter to take a few steps on the glacier as most do.

  • Kayaking
Tatoosh Kayaking - 20-minute bus ride to business HQ, 20-minute boat ride to launch point (friendly, knowledgeable drivers); 90-minute kayaking experience on still water that included numerous bald eagle sightings as well as one sea lion swimming a distance away. The guide were very friendly and fun but would have enjoyed the challenge of more turbulent water.

  • Ziplining
Definitely the highlight of our excursion experiences. Guides Kevin and Sean were hilarious as well as competent and professional.
