Celebrity Equinox Cruise Review by Firegerry
- Sail Date: May 2015
- Destination: Mediterranean
- Cabin Type: Concierge Class
We spent two nights in Barcelona prior to sailing. First time in Europe for both of us and we found that to be a wonderful city that we hope to get back to someday.
I would say the main bone of contention dealt with shore excursions. When we arrived in Salerno, Italy we were docked in a very industrial port. According to the tour guide on our bus in the afternoon the issue was not the fault of Celebrity or the land shore excursion operators, but rather with the port authorities. Basically there was a gate very close to the ship which the port would not allow to be opened. As a result the tour buses had to wend their way on a very circuitous roadway to exit the port. The port was jam packed with tractor trailer units transporting new automobiles. The result was sitting on a tour bus that didn't move for nearly 30 minutes! Not a pleasant experience. Ultimately it is Celebrity's responsibility! We also heard other passengers say they too had shore excursion issues.
We found the cabin to be great (1652 on Deck 11). Our cabin steward, Rhea and her assistant were great. She was very attentive and helpful with every request.
The onboard entertainment was excellent. We went to the show in the Equinox Theater each evening and found the productions to be high quality.
One thing that was disappointing was the lack of poolside entertainment. There was a "house band" on board and they were very good. Unfortunately they only performed poolside the first two days. A young man with a guitar would play for about 40 minutes at the pool at about 4:30pm each afternoon, (or almost each afternoon) and I think he played the same set every day.
We had second sitting dinner and wound up sitting with a couple we met through the CC Roll Call Sail Away party. My wife and I both felt the food was good but the quality was down from our last Celebrity Cruise in 2010. Others on CC have confirmed this as well. One thing we did find peculiar was that our waiter often looked up at the ceiling when he was speaking with us!
I also was a bit disappointed in the disembarkation in Rome. We completed a questionnaire that asked about time of car service appointments etc. We had an 8:30am reservation with a car service and we weren't called to disembark until after 9:00am! I got an e-mail from the car service saying the driver would not be able to wait much longer. That was a little disconcerting!
Overall we both were quite pleased. We realize that in this day and age not everybody is going to be satisfied with everything. We did a lot of research before the cruise on the various ports of call, but now realize we need to do more before the next cruise, especially if we opt to use private shore excursions instead of Celebrity excursions.

Cannes Walking TourMy DW and I enjoyed this tour but we felt badly for the young girl who was our guide. She spoke softly and even with the listening devices it was a little difficult to hear her in the beginning. Several people left the tour, but we figured we paid for it, so we'll stay with it. So glad we did. The young lady "found her groove" as time went on and made the tour quite enjoyable. We loved this city and really enjoyed walking around. We were there during the film festival, so things were crowded and hectic. Once the tour ended we spent a few more hours walking around and did some shopping.View All 12,810 Cannes Walking Tour Reviews
Monaco & Village of EzeThe tour was actually titled Nice, Eze and Monaco. Our tour guide was tremendous, she pointed out great sights as well as many historical facts and locations. We had lunch in a great restaurant called Pinocchio's which was very nice.View All 25 Monaco & Village of Eze Reviews
Cagliari City TourWe didn't really enjoy this tour but upon reflection it may have been due to a confluence of many circumstances, some of which were beyond the control of those in control. The weather was crummy. It was rainy and at one point got quite foggy. I think the tour guide; a young lady, was handicapped if you will by the bus driver. He had an attitude like he wanted to be anywhere but there! We drove by the basilica in town three times! We did make a stop at a lovely cafe/liquor store where we had a complimentary beverage, but it was obvious the intention was to get passengers to purchase wine etc., (which many did)! The plan was to drop us in the main shopping district for 45 minutes. Many on the bus got a bit unruly and asked to be taken back to the ship! At this point I felt bad for the young lady as people seemed to be taking the weather conditions out on her! We and 2 other couples decided we wanted to browse the shopping area, with the understanding the bus was not going to pick us up. It wasn't a big deal as we were right across the main street from the port. However when we attempted to walk back to the ship, port security told us we could not walk but must be on board a bus or taxi! We caught a shuttle bus right outside the port and hopped a ride back to the ship.View All 23 Cagliari City Tour Reviews
