  3. Norwegian Epic
We chose the Epic, because it was a good value (terrific incentives, free drinks and 3rd passenger) and met our needs transporting my family around the Med to various ports for full day trips to some great places. If we were on a cruise, that the ship was the focus I would be more disappointed. The embarkation process that I normally dread was the smoothest I have ever had. Our cabin was ready immediately and our luggage was delivered within the hour. My son loved the Teen club and made friends from all over the world. We decided to splurge on the dining package, that was a big mistake. We loved the Cirque Dreams dinner show and the Moderno (Brazilian) was excellent. The others were mediocre. I was most disappointed in Cagney's Steakhouse. It bills itself as a Chicago/NY style steakhouse. I would compare it to Outback, or Longhorn. Not a bad family place, but nowhere close to the quality of meat and sides that I was expecting. The French place was so, so and the Italian place was terrible. We did enjoy the Japanese place, but nothing special. The entertainment was good, but no variety, all song and dance. No magic, No comedy (Not even in the comedy club) I was disappointed that they replaced Blue Man Group with another song and dance act. We did not book any cruise ship sponsored excursions, because of the staggering cost. For the three Italian ports we booked a private car and driver for three for similar money if not less. www.shoreexcursionsinitaly.net. We found value in other ports as well. I very much dislike the $12.95 pp/day "service charge" that is distributed by the line at their discretion. I like tipping guidelines, but they should be earned by those who make my vacation special. Our Steward Anthony did a great job, so I hope he got a healthy share. I do not know who gets the rest. We did not use the MDR and they charged us 18% on everything else.

Cabin Review

Family Mini-Suite with Balcony
Cabin M3 8070
What they call a mini suite was the worst cabin I ever had even before I could afford a balcony. The curved design made it odd to negotiate at night. The toilet area of the split bathroom was so tight it was barely usable. The bed was very short, so it is a good thing no one in the family is tall.

I am glad we did not spend much time in it.

  • Barcelona
Loved Barcelona. We spent a few days after the cruise enjoying it. Not as crowded, or expensive as other cities. Good food. As an added bonus the Barcelona football (soccer) team won the championship while we were there. It was great to be a part of the festive atmosphere even if I do not quite appreciate the sport.

  • Private Tour
Private Mercedes van and driver for less than if we took the cruise ship bus tour. We visited the Amalfi coast including the best pizza I have ever had. Then a tour of Pompeii. That was fascinating, I of course knew of he town destroyed in the first century, but never know how advanced they were for their time. They even knew the earth was round. I point not proven for hundreds of years.

Private tour (just the 3 of us) in Mercedes Van for less than the cruise ship bus. We saw as much of Rome as could be crammed into a day (The Colosseum, The Forum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and a privately guided tour of The Vatican. The Pope must be in great shape. That place has a lot of steps. Rome is very crowded and we had to rush a bit to see it all, but it was great.
