  3. Celebrity Eclipse
This was our sixth cruise and first on Celebrity. Embarkation was impressive, Southampton is extremely well organised, from parking to being on deck 14 and at the Mast Bar took less than 45 minutes. - cases were delivered to the room quickly. Our cabin was deck 10 - 1083, a concierge balcony room, This cabin was the best cabin we have had on any cruise so far, very nice furnishings, large bathroom, compared with other cruise ships we have sailed on, large flat screen TV, sofa bed etc. However the size of the bathroom means that there is less storage space for clothes, We were on-board for a week, and only had enough room for the limited number of clothes we bought with us, A longer sailing would be a problem if you like to unpack all your clothes etc. There is storage over the bed but requires you to stand on the bed to reach it. The balcony was a good size with nice furniture, 2 chairs, 1 table, and 2 foot stools, The ships super structure does overhang the balcony and can limit the amount of sky that is visible, sunbathing would be difficult on this balcony. However as we were going to Norway the overhang kept the rain well away from us :). The ships furnishings and décor are excellent, both on inside and outside decks, lots of new carpets too ( refitted before we sailed ), Overall the ship gives a feeling that you are somewhere special. The main public decks ( 5,4 and 3 ) are very pleasant, nice arm chairs etc, and overall there seemed plenty of room, especially as the weather was very poor at times and only a small number of people were brave enough to venture outside. The art gallery and photo section take up a lot of room on Deck 5 – far bigger than previous ships we have sailed on, The shops are large and quite specialised, shops are located on both decks 4 and 5. The ships elevators are located mid ships and forward with a total of 12 lifts, in general there was no problem getting from deck to deck quickly and easily, even on port days. There are three pools, 2 outside and 1 in the solarium, on the days when the outside pools could be used, they were nicely heated, and fresh water filled, very pleasant to use. On a cruise in warmer climates the lack of a children's pool area could be a problem. In general the pools are not good for families with children. Finally the lawn area on deck 15 is very pleasant, however I personally can not understand the need for it, and on this particular ship the lawns were too large, on later ships in the class they have been reduced in size. I think the space could be utilized far better, a few deck games would be nice. In fact there are no deck games apart from boule or croquet on the lawn, putting was available but the grass is way too long for this activity. Drinks and Bars. There are a plenty of bars located through out the ship, so there is a good choice of where to go for pre dinner drinks etc. The Sunset Bar on Deck 15 is very pleasant and in good weather is a very nice bar.to sit in and watch the sea go by. Good service and a large range of drinks etc. The pool bar, mast bar and Solarium bar again were pleasant and should be able to cope easily in good weather etc. Our favourite bar was the new World Class Bar Tenders selection, open in the evenings, this served drinks from a small select menu, and each one is stunning. The bar tenders were superb and crafted drinks very professionally, however they are time consuming to make and require patience, but well worth the wait. One minor gripe about this bar is, Premium drink package holders and above are only allowed to have drinks here. We upgraded from the included classic package to premium as we found the classic package to be very limiting etc. The Martini bar on deck 4 is a superb bar with very skilful staff, the frozen bar top is a nice touch too. Fabulous place to try out the Martini menu etc. The casino bar / sports bar also on deck 4 is a nice place to meet, but service was slow at times, also large screen TVs showing sport do dominate here. Overall the casino was a very pleasant place to be, and being non smoking was a real bonus. My wife and I do smoke but have often found casinos on other ships unbearable. The tables were very well run, excellent croupiers and a good choice of slots too. Drinks service in the casino was non existent at times, and was poor at best. This let the casino down badly, Food. The main dining room is nicely furnished, but a little bit dull, no real wow factor, compared to other ships. The service was good, but a bit rushed at times, we did feel that they were trying to get your meal over with as quickly as possible. On this cruise people were eating quite late, which may explain this. The food was in our opinion a big let down, not what we expected, it was even poor compared to the previous 2 Royal Caribbean ships we have cruised on. The choice on the menu was small, and a bit boring. The vegetables served on most nights were very poor – a few over cooked green beans, some odd shaped carrots and an ice cream scoop of mashed potatoe – reminiscent of a school dinner. The Oceanview was ok but poorly laid out, lots of people having to wander from station to station to get a meal, in general the quality of food was good, but temperature was a problem, some food luke warm at best. We did not use the speciality restaurants as we felt that the extra price was too high, at $90 to $100 per couple. Not quite sure why the extra charge was so high. The cafe on deck 5 was very nice but always full so getting a seat could be a challenge. But the coffee and cakes were fabulous. Overall we enjoyed the cruise, Norway was spectacular, Geiranger Fjord is stunning, we were on deck at 5 in the morning to witness our passage through the Fjord – wow!!! well worth the effort. The weather could have been better at times but we knew this would be the case. The food was a let down, and needs to be improved. The ship is more suited to a relaxing holiday and has a quiet atmosphere – it is not a party ship. So don't expect lots of activity. Finally disembarkation was a real breeze, 5 mins from Cabin to Car Park. Superb !!! we did self carry off and well recommend this if you can manage it.
