  3. Volendam
Took a 28 day cruise on the Volendam from Hong Kong to Singapore. Countries visited included Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore. The overall cruise was good. The food was good, not great. Variety was limited. My favorite meals were off the ship in the ports of call. The entertainment on board was mixed. The house band, the HAL Cats, tried to make up for lack of talent by excessive volume. A piano and violin duo, Adagio, was excellent. The solo guitarist, Michael, was very good but stuck in a bad venue between the casino and the shops. I was disappointed with the lack of lectures on the trip. Other than one lecture on Hong Kong, there were no lectures about the history and culture of the places we visited.

Good cruise in Southeast Asia.

Cabin Review

Cabin
Avoid cabin 6127 on the Verandah deck! The cabin is directly above the bandstand for the Ocean Club on deck 5. The noise in the cabin was loud, especially the drums. The band in the Ocean Club played until 11:30 pm. We mentioned this to the staff and the music was not as loud the next night. However the night after it was loud again. We had to ask the staff to turn down the music about every other night. Since we were on a 28 night cruise we asked if we could change cabins. We were offered a downgraded cabin for the second 14 nights (class B instead of AA). Fortunately a class A cabin became available (6150) and we moved for the second 14 nights. 6150 was quiet.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Yangon (Rangoon)
Yangon, in Myanmar (formerly Burma), was a fascinating city. We took a private tour for four through Travel Indochina. Our guide, Zar, was excellent. She spoke very good English and was able to modify the tour to fit our interests. We toured the center of Yangon and the old British colonial buildings. We spent a couple of hours in the Scott market. The highlight was the Shwedagon Padoga, a 330 foot tall gold-plated pagoda. We saw the pagoda in the late afternoon and early evening. On our visits much of the lower pagoda was covered for restoration.Myanmar is a fascinating country. It is undergoing a transformation from a underdeveloped dictatorship to an emerging democracy. It has just opened up to western tourists in the past few years. The ship docked about an hour away from Yangon. The road to Yangon was very crude and subject to traffic jams. Our return from Yangon took about 2 1/2 hours.
