This was our first cruise and we were filled with wonder at the experience. We came onboard with absolutely no expectations so disappointment was not an option for us. My wife and I were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary and what a way to celebrate! Alaska was beautiful to say the least, the Zaandam was an experience in and of itself. The cabin was spacious (although I was wishing I had of been able to spring for the extra space a balcony cabin would have given us by Day 5). The teak deck for morning strolls around the ship was a nice touch and first class style is evident throughout your daily interaction with all staff. Our cabin steward was especially attentive and our room was always cleaned by the time we returned even though we never really saw him hanging around. The meals are of the highest quality while the buffet restaurant left a little to be desired sometimes with the variety. We participated in the Renewal of Vows Ceremony with the Captain of the ship which was emotionally moving as well as memorable. The leather bound memento folder which was given to us with a Certificate was an excellent touch. If we were to return to Alaska again, we would definitely choose to go later in the summer (perhaps late July or early August) so that you can spend a little more time on deck without worrying about dressing in layers. There was plenty to do on the ship though so when we got tired of looking at Glaciers, we had alternate activities planned. The shows were entertaining and colorful. We chose to embark on our own tours of the smaller towns such as Juneau and Skagway which turned out to be a good choice. We got to see the non-touristy side of the towns but also saw the trendy areas. Lots of places to shop and Jewelry outlets to view. The shops recommended by HAL appeared to be more expensive than some others you could shop at. We have booked a 15 day cruise to Hawaii on Jan 26/07 and plan to submit a review on this trip once we have returned. So far our cruising experience has been without any real complaints. More to follow.
