We chose to go with Regent for the 3rd year in a row after very good experience on the Navigator. Explorer has been hyped as the most luxurious cruise liner in the World, so we thought we would try her. She looks beautiful and the interior art, decor and appearance is gorgeous and the furniture is very comfortable too. First impressions are very good. The main problem for us and a number of other passengers we spoke to was just how she failed to provide the level of comfort required of a luxury ship when sailing. Even in calm waters at the stern of the ship where most restaurants are, she 'jogs' from side to side, like a car with an out of balance wheel, then when seas become a little more challenging (but no more than a Force 2-3) our suite would groan and creak like an old Spanish Galleon! The ride was on occasion akin to that of a car ferry crossing the Irish Sea, with lots of slapping and banging going on. Fortunately after 4 or 5 days the seas became like a mill-pond, so the majority of the problems subsided but the 'jog' persisted. Unfortunately, the staff on the ship seemed rather laissez-faire and on several occasions we had to 'chase-up' instructions for drinks, towels and general service. This was very surprising and disappointing because as previously mentioned our experience with Regent in the past has been excellent. Moving on to our suite, 810. There was no cold water to the wash basins...just tepid...not great for cleaning your teeth, obviously not fixable during our cruise! The satellite TV reception was poor and the sound system akin to my transistor radio of the 60's. The patio door was almost impossible to close properly and whistled and sang in the wind all night long. Drawers and cupboards were poorly fitted and in our opinion were not of the expected quality, having pull handles with very sharp edges. The ensuite door would not close without slamming, not desirable for your partner asleep after your mid-night visit to the bathroom. The internet package only allows for one user at a time....trips out often and is extremely slow. There is a limited number of music channels on the TV and no facility to play your own music through the suite system, via iPod or MP3. Annoyingly, the walk-in closet door was not lockable in the open position and had a tendency to close itself, cutting the lights whilst you are inside. The ensuite door has deep scratches in it, where the suite door can run into it when opened. Finally, one of the two quality coat hooks behind the door has broken off and been replaced by a cheap 50 cent chrome one, that you might put in your garden shed! The bed is very comfortable, the 2 seater couch is not and there is only one chair in the suite, so with no 4th chair its not possible to entertain friends for a pre-dinner cocktail. Our room stewards were very good. Room Service. We called it once for some Champagne and Shrimps, so we could watch the sunset. It didn't arrive. A bottle of Champagne arrived 90 minutes later as were were going to dinner. Someone forgot.....The F&B manager and Head Chef were nice and very apologetic....but the moment had gone. Generally, the restaurant food was very good. Especially in the Pacific Rim and Chartreuse, however, on several occasions it was overcooked and had to be sent back. The Veranda cafe is great for breakfast but there are never any berries on display, be warned that if you want anything not on show, someone has to go 'downstairs' for it...and that takes time. There are never any 'no sugar added' deserts available, which was very surprising and maybe a policy with this ship but for diabetics and those conscious of sugar intake, only 'nsa' cookies were available. Overall, we enjoyed the cruise, as the weather was very good and we met some nice people. However, we would not travel on the Explorer again, as we believe that it has problems in terms of comfort and service and does not represent the value expected.This would not deter us from travelling with Regent again but we would probably go with Silversea or Seaborn for the next cruise Read Less

The ship is very luxurious. However, it has many serious design and execution flaws. The upper deck in the theatre has very poor sight lines to the stage. The floor does not have enough fall. The seating on the lower deck between the aisles is too narrow to allow access to guests or waiters. For a muster station, it is dangerous. If you are on the aisle, it is fine, in the middle, it is inaccessible. There are two wide poles that block access and viewing. Two shows we never were served. One night we were served an extra drink by mistake. The waiter later discovered her error, recovered the drink, and reserved the drink to another guest several rows in front of us. The bathroom near the theatre had three urinals in a L shaped pattern. Only two can be used at any time. The wall paper around the door and tv cabinet was curling. The screw on the bathroom door was stripped. I had one of the best steaks I have ever had. My wife was unable to eat her swordfish. Our friends pork chop was raw. Lobster bisque, a favorite, was more like lobster consumme. Tomato sauce came from Chef Boy Ardee can. BarBQue was outstanding. My potato is still missing in action. Shore excursions were fair to poor. Avoid the train ride and the glass blowing at all costs. The cliff diving was ok. Wifi was slow and hard to connect up. I did expect better on a new, 6 star ship. Show band and singers were top-notch. Two headliners were poor, two others what you expect on a cruise on the most luxurious ship ever built. rslebmo Read Less

Have been a Celebrity regular. My wife wanted to try Regent because she had heard so much about it and especially this new ship, the Explorer. Beautiful ship. Included tours very poor. 34+ people on a bus and not well organized or interesting. Some food good, some very poor (Worst Veal Marsala I have ever eaten). Certainly not worth the cost difference over Celebrity, Bar staff and servers very inattentive and slow and forgot requests easily. Lecturers were great and the ship's group of entertainers were amazing and interacted with the passengers which was fun. Special call out to Stephanie Londino, lead singer, who is the best. Deserves a better gig in the future. Cruise cost over double a Celebrity cruise and not close to worth the difference. Will not be a Regent returnee. They seem to cater to people who need to be totally pampered and are not interested in do thing for themselves. Read Less

Yes, of course, a ship that was often praised. The shipping company claims to have the most luxurious ship. Accordingly, our expectations were high. In fact, the ship is exceptionally tasteful, high quality and equipped with lots of love for details. We were also very satisfied with the quality of the food in all Restaurants. With the exception of the Prime Seven, whereupon we canceled a second reservation and went to Compass Rose instead. However, to a 6-star ship belongs also an exceptional service, which we missed. We are travelling quite often (2-3 times a year) with Celebrity in Suite Class, there we enjoy a much better personalized service and individual attention than on this cruise. On the Explorer-Cruise, we had Concierge Suite only, maybe you will get the expected attention in the top suites only, besides this, we were Regent first time cruiser. This could be a reason too... Also when we were asked to fill in a mid-cruise-survey and we left the point that we were annoyed by the loudspeaker announcements of the instructor from the artkitchen in our room, no one has really cared about. The entertainment is poor. Just one or two shows in 15 days, we have visited, others we have left prematurely. The most entertaining show was by the way the Crew Show. Thanks to all the crew members involved! Sadly to find out that Regent did not asked about a rating of the Crew Show in the End of Cruise survey. Only about the 'official' shows. The Regent offered excursions were not bad, but we expected here also more professionalism. Because they are free of charge, you can not expect too much. With 50 years of age, we were probably the youngest on board the Explorer. So we often felt very bored. In any case, we had a lot of rest on board. Finally, we will not book another Regent-cruise in the near future and will stay with Celebrity's Suite Class and the more diverse clientele and the more individual offerings. Read Less

I wanted to visit many islands in the Caribbean & Regent cruises got high ratings. The special reservation restaurants were ok but not outstanding. I thought the wine was poor quality. Perhaps they should just charge for wine & put money elsewhere. Poor selection of beers! Good choices on mixed drinks. The entertainment on ship was pretty poor & the lecturer was very disappointing. The cruise ship up the St Lawrence seaway(Pearl) the lecturer was outstanding so we expected that quality. Being charged $1000 for a trip to the ship's doctor was OUTRAGEOUS! 3 lab tests, exam, & antibiotics. BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU VISIT THE CLINIC! I think the Regent people should have absorbed some of the cost. I can submit these charges back home but they will cover a minimum about~ $200!! Shore excursions would have been much better had they started later in the day. Who wants to go on a tour at 8'oclock in the morning when your on vacation. There were varied tours which was good. Disembarkation was a bit crazy. Having people catching a flight for noon and others for a flight in the evening to be on the same bus was nuts. We were also dropped off in the wrong area for our flight. Overall I was disappointed in the Regent cruise. Read Less

The biggest asset Regent have are their staff. The suites are well designed, larger but why no chair other than a desk chair and the couch is poor. The bathroom/ shower is excellent. The Veranda restaurant has a lot more space outside and the chairs are much improved. The tables are already getting chipped. The Speciality restaurants, Prime 7 , Chatreuse, and Pacific Rim are good although some a little inconsistent. The main restaurant The Compass Rose resembles a cafeteria, although smaller than on other Regent vessels the lighting is horrific ( think Las Vegas ), the service stations are many and the used plates and plastic covers are in full view. The extensive art work may be an acquired taste....to many the majority of the hangings are dark, ugly and disturbing. The balcony windows whistle even in light winds. The cooking smoke from the pool grill wafts across the deck permeating clothes There is no access to the bow of the ship outside at any level .99% of gusts have no front view except from the Observation Lounge where the dark glass is so dark, observing anything is difficult. The rear entrance to Compass Rose has been closed off meaning for some a route march to the entrance. Some lifts are "flask" shaped with a narrow entrance....dangerous as are the steps in the theatre. Those steps are badly lit. The disembarkation arrangements in Miami were a shambles and the Hop on Hop off tour with Big Bus a nightmare Read Less

We chose this for the itinerary-across the Med to many places we had not been, and to try out this form of travel--luxury cruise.Overall its unlikely we would do this kind of cruise again: Beautiful ship, well appointed. Not quite 700 people on board and rarely felt crowded. But as we came into the last few nights we were feeling too confined, limited choices. We very much like to spend evenings ashore, wandering towns and squares, seaside restaurants, feeling the energy of people out and about.Can't do that on these cruises. We felt very ignored as first time cruisers--all the emphasis was on the many repeaters on board--we understand that--but a briefing and orientation for first timers would have been nice--as would having a designated staff person for answering the stupid questions we had many of the first few days. In one sense heavy marketing to get you to sign up for another cruise--yet no one every came to us--first timers--to ask how we were doing, whether there was anything of concern or needed. No attempt to talk with us before we disembarked. That surprised me. Overall, the food was good, but there were some issues. Cabin was very nice, veranda was nice. We had a Concierge Suite. Excursions were a mixed bag--all depends on the guide and they varied a lot in competency. Mixed feelings about the "Shipboard Credit"--in the last few days lots of people were complaining about having to "force spend" or lose the money. Yet the Boutique stock was pretty limited--for men mostly Ralph Lauren Polo--which one can find anywhere. Wi-Fi was nightmare the first few days. Everyone complaining. Read Less

We chose this Regent ship and cruise ,because of previous good experiences on the Voyager.. The ship is well appointed with very spacious and underused Public areas .[easy to find a quiet spot ] .The Library is very nice ! The activities are OK . The gym has nice new machines, however instruction in how to use them is lacking . Ports on this cruise were well chosen . [ Athens to Venice ]We particularly enjoyed Koper [Slovenia] and as well Kotor . Of course Venice is nice ,as usually ,however time there is short unless you stay over [ recommended for 1st time visitors]. Some of the shore excursions were a bit too long ,especially when there is rain . Two excursions during heavy rains [ Kryka ,Lake Bled] were downright treacherous . Some of the paths/steps were very slippery and an accident waiting to happen . Something else should have been figured out for those conditions! Disembarkation was a disaster [4 am ] .There were not enough crew available to give directions and we nearly got lost . Air scheduling on return was also a complete disaster [ Iberian Air ] and the plane was scheduled to be retired in 5 days . [not a good thought for Transatlantic flying ] It took 27 hours for us to get home from Venice ,which is very Unacceptable !! Dining is for the most part ,excellent . Prime is very good ,and had excellent service .Compass rose was outstanding for us, because several servers made it special [ Enrique ,Irfan and Rebecca!]. Lunch in Koper [Lake Bled] was very good , Kotor [Highlights of Montenegro ] lunch and restrooms bad. Chartreuse was not very good and perhaps too over the top on the menu . Entertainment was so- so . The onboard crew entertainment was somewhat amateurish and a tad repetitive . Naki Attaman ,the pianist was outstanding and the Violinist was also good . John Barron [cruise director did an entertaining show himself and has a good voice. Overall maybe 3-4 nights out of 9 or so. Service was mostly good . A glaring deficiency was the frequent lack of Wi Fi . We were sold a cabin with ""free Wi Fi "" ,however if it does not work; then money wasted and there should have been a REFUND!. The tech ,person was not overly friendly ,and the hours for assistance with Internet and computers were severely lacking . There should be two [2] The persons on board for I.T. Overall ,this cruise was not up to our expectations .The whole experience seemed a little "off" compared to prior cruises on the Regent Voyager . We would probably not use Regent ,again . Food was hit and miss but not really what I hoped for, had as good or better at other resorts for a fraction of the price. Some parts of the meals seemed prepared way ahead of time and looked and tasted like it. Service in the specialty restaurants was iffy, especially the French and Asian, there it was bad to pushy and a number of guest had the same impression. The Compass Rose had by far the best servers and some of the best meals, the open seating Italian was the worst especially service and food fair. The food\service was a big disappointment and for the price of these cruises it was not a good value. Wi-Fi was basically useless and everyone had the same complaint. Checked with their business center and they basically told me it was my new tablet, and I should only use Apple products although they did not work either. I needed to check back for business and this was a real problem, went 2 days before I got connected and then it would disconnect me. Spent hours during the course of the cruise trying to connect which I would have preferred to have been enjoying my cruise. Tried to check the TV for news especially on the hurricane in the SE US but same basic problem, only connected occasionally and then it would go away. Didn't matter where we were at port or at sea, same problems and same complaints from every guest I spoke to. It's hard to say if I would try Regents again, just did not seem to have their act together in many fields vs. the cost and other options. Read Less

My wife and I sailed on October 4th from Monte Carlo to Athens. We have cruised 9 times on 7 different cruise lines. This was our first time with Regent. The ship, common rooms and cabins were the best I have ever seen. However, the staff and crew were new and therefore the service was not as good as I had hoped. The free internet was spotty and inconsistent. The ship also had some problems with the sewage system which left foul odors in the hallways. But in fairness, this is going to happen with any new ship as it “shakes out” it problems and concerns. Activities and entertainment were also not up to par with “the most luxurious ship in the world”. They were good, but not great. Shore excursions are included with Regent, but were too compact and too fast paced. It is very hard to enjoy the scenery around you when you become focused on not losing your tour guide. Dining was excellent as was embarkation and disembarkation. But with the cost the cruise compared to what you get, I don’t feel this was worth the money and I probably will not cruise with Regent again. Read Less

Entertainment - such very good shows-loved the Opera Girls. Fun cruise director. Love David Nevin's show. Liked breakfast in Sette Mare. Negatives- Cabin(see below). No outdoor bar. Bad excursions with crummy buses(they were only 1/2 full and should have used smaller more modern with legroom etc.) Impersonal, robotic service on deck & lounges. Two ports changed because of conditions(1 meter seas-seemed overly conservative). We had no excursion planned for Portofino and when changed to Genoa the ship only accommodated people who had booked tours & didn't provide a shuttle to Portofino. Chartreuse was so disappointing- timing way off, service awkward & not professional. Would nave enjoyed a ship formal night.Things like caviar at breakfast on Sun-we just stumbled upon and felt it might have been better communicated. Bad communication about any changes-seemed guest's responsibility to study newsletter for new info. Read Less

This was our first cruise on Regent. Several of our friends who were onboard have sailed with them many times. Regent and this ship were highly touted as first class. Although we had a good time for the 20 days, sadly I cannot say the experience was first class. The ship itself is new and opulent. My personal taste would have preferred less black marble and more conventional artwork but obviously much money was spent in outfitting the ship. Our cabin was a Deluxe Veranda and it was very spacious and well laid out. Walk in closet, two sink marble bathroom with shower and tub. You could not ask for a better cabin. So what is the problem? Service. Throughout the ship service just did not live up to expectations. At the bars, in the restaurants and in the cabin staff the service was sorely lacking. Long waits to catch the eye of a waiter and longer waits after giving your order. Several times we were unable to reach our steward for cabin service. The method used in La Veranda for lunch is a combination of buffet and waiter service. Very often resulting in long waits for what the waiter had to serve. The highly touted "free internet" was basically a joke. Very often unavailable after trying to log in and with a great probability that you would be logged out if you did manage to log in. The computers available had a somewhat better rate of success but even with them it was not always possible to get online. Once online it was very slow. The food varied in quality a great deal. Sometimes very good but at times dreadful. The special restaurants did a little better but not much. At times the Compass Rose seemed more like a cafeteria than a fine restaurant. Staffing seemed inadequate throughout the ship and I was surprised at how many of the crew that came in contact with the passengers had only a limited command of the English language. After all most of the passengers were either American, English or Canadian. There was a great variety of shore excursions to choose from. On balance about half of them were very good. A lot depends on the guide and some of them did not do an adequate job. Generally there were too many people in each group. The guides used the ear phones on only two of the tours. If the group is large and the guide is not the best then it is difficult to get much out of the tour. As regards entertainment the lounges had a variety of piano and trios which were very adequate. We saw only half of the nightly shows and decided we did not miss much. The ship also offered trivia contests and karaoke in which we did not participate. Booked this cruise to celebrate a milestone birthday and because of the hype of the new Explorer. Reading the other reviews, I must say I found the same things lacking. By the fourth sail of the Explorer I thought many of the kinks would be fixed. The service levels were just not as crisp as previous experience with Regent. The entertainment was mediocre at best. The excursions were okay, but again, the tour guides not as good as previous experience with Regent. We found the food very good, however the service in trying to get wine was terrible compared to previously being greeted with the wine selections for the evening. The suite was lovely but on the last day at sea the service disappeared. The trash wasn't emptied. The fruit was removed from the bowl ( really, they couldn't wait 12 hours?) The bed was turned down for the evening by 11AM. room service the morning of departure was rushed and no 5 minute notice that morning. I also found service more attentive when my husband was with me than when I was by myself. Especially at the coffee lounge on 5). It became a comedy of errors one afternoon trying to get a grilled chicken sandwich at the pool grille that finally arrived after a 40 minute wait . the carpet is already showing wear, especially the beige stairs in the main staircase and the pink carpets. One of the large pictures on deck five had a substantial hole during the cruise. Also, the smells in certain hallways, I will also agree with previous reviews, could be nauseating. the dark wood is also showing numerous scuff marks and wear. The baseboards and corners are already gathering dust. I agree with a previous review hats off to Spyder, Giorgio, and I will add Elena and Agus. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we are Regent fans, wanted to try the new ship, and were interested in the itinerary. We loved the new design of our cabin. The closet was a more workable shape, the bathroom huge, the drawer space beyond adequate, and the bed facing the sea delightful. The redistribution of restaurant space between the venues was a welcome change as was the variety of venues offering lunch. Our disappointments, however, have made us question future cruising with Regent. In fact, this is the first time we have not reserved a future cruise (or option) while onboard. The staffing level seems greatly reduced. The bars were crowded before dinner yet there were only one or two servers available. As the waits exceeded twenty minutes before anyone appeared, people crowded the bar to place their own orders. This added stress to the already overburdened bartenders. The wait for waiters in Compass Rose, for tables to be cleared in La Veranda, and for a wine steward to appear in either venue, was equally long. Finally, the Internet access was the worst we have experienced anywhere in the world. The sign-in procedure is archaic and needlessly complex. The long lines waiting for the Internet helper were a good illustration of the problem. He was surly and claimed there should be "three of him" on board. Once on line, the connection is dropped frequently necessitating one to go through the entire procedure again. For several days of the ten day cruise there was no internet service or phone service available at all - and we were never far from land. We have often sailed with Regent for more than thirty days at a time, have advanced status with them, and are very worried that these problems are indicative of a lack of emphasis on customer service with the new management team. Whilst the ship is impressive, to call this a Maiden Voyage was rather a misnomer. There was nothing "special" about the cruise - no "wow" factor, no special event (not even one formal night) and the new entertainment from 'in house' Norwegian Holdings was second rate compared to what we had experience on many previous Regent cruise. I felt that I had been duped into taking a cruise that I would not otherwise have chosen. The one saving grace on the cruise was the energy, enthusiasm and entertainment provided by the Cruise Director, Ray Solaire. Layout of the ship is impressive with a lot more space in the restaurants, lounges and public/open areas but the ship does have two major drawbacks - (1) the sight lines in the theatre, particularly from the balcony are poor and there is a real safety hazard in the aisles (2) There is no outside forward observation area from which to take photographs or view the sail-ins. The staff, many of whom we had met before, were very helpful and efficient. Overall, the restaurants were a great improvement with much more space available and some nice touches - I particularly liked the viewable cooking area in Sette Mare. Also, the new menu in Compass Rose leaves one not needing to eat in the speciality restaurants as the choice is so great. Read Less

We chose this much lauded inaugural cruise on REGENT'S EXPLORER I want to start this review by saying something nice (it goes downhill from here). Whoever designed the ship & did the interior design did a fabulous job. It's lovely! End of good news. We paid an outrageous sum of money to be on the inaugural voyage because we read that this was going to be an amazing experience. It was - for all the wrong reasons. The "executive" staff had an "attitude" - notably at the guest services desk. They were borderline obnoxious especially one man who questioned my "motive" for settling the bill a day early. "Don't you expect to be spending more money?". Huh? Another very unpleasant person is an Italian gal who works in the Pacific Rim restaurant. Woah - she was so nasty we found ourselves walking out of our way to avoid her! All this for top dollar! We were on the 8th floor - aft. There was a constant smell in the hallways of food wafting from somewhere. I actually had to hold my breath, as I walked down the hall, because it was nauseating! The food was good in most of the restaurants but never really hot, just lukewarm. The exception being "Compass Rose" which we thought was bad - mushy vegetables & lukewarm fish. Not to mention the snot nose maître d' who asked our cabin #'s - we were 3rd tier from the top & then tried to seat us right next to the door where the waiters were bringing in the food. Not sure if the kitchen was behind those doors. Clearly a hierarchal system in play. I mentioned this to the G.M. who just about shrugged his shoulders - never heard back from him after this. On top of everything else - and keep in mind the prices were exorbitant! - Regent didn't provide top notch entertainment. The same lovely, but underpaid, Filipino 3 person ensemble - was everywhere. Not to mention the cruise director who sang, danced & read the announcements. We were on Seabourn's "Quest" inauguration cruise & it was a class act. Never again will we cruise on Regent which is owned by Norwegian cruise lines. They claim its a notch above but its not! The prices are but you might as well be on Celebrity or Princess! Save your money! Clearly, all the money was put into the décor. Oh, and the captain barely had time for the guests. We ran into him several times & got a slight nod! He was more interested in following his family around who were onboard. Have to thank him, though, since we arrived safely. I spoke to many fellow passengers both during and after the cruise and apart from the usual litany of petty complaints and genuine grievances there was a common theme of which Regent had better take urgent note. We were told this maiden voyage of "the most luxurious ship in the world" would be truly special and memorable and worth every cent of the considerable price we paid for the privilege of being there. It was neither. It was just another cruise, albeit on a brand new ship (with many ongoing "issues"). In fact the ship was/is nowhere near finished and Regent put little or no thought or effort into making the maiden voyage special or memorable and we are very disappointed and angry at Regents apparent indifference because Lord knows they were made well aware of its loyal and longstanding customers' unhappiness in the mid cruise questionnaire and discussions with the hotel manager and others. This was our 7th Regent cruise and probably our last. Liked: - spacious cabins with plenty of storage and the comfortable bed facing the window/view. - quality bed linen but it's new so time will tell. Skimpy towels. - ample shaded outdoor seating in spacious public areas. - the food was fine for us (we aren't foodies and don't cruise to eat). - very smooth ride, albeit in always calm seas. - great coffee in the cafe. - excellent spa/gym facilities although the private treatment rooms are cramped and claustrophobic with no natural light. - walking track(s) on deck 12. Disliked: - tacky Vegas decor with some cheap carpets already showing signs of damage/wear and tear. Clashing colour schemes and gloomy artwork (subjective I know). - strong cooking smells in aft corridors. - poor entertainment with not one "headline" act and boring speakers. Terry Waite?! - friendly cruise director Ray Solaire is a Regent institution and is very visible among the guests but his puppet/ventriloquist act is now well past its sell by date. - in suite TV shows/movies/lectures ran on a very limited loop with no updates after the first few days. - terrible theatre design/decor with obstructed sight lines and dangerous aisle steps. - surly guest services staff with attitude (pretty standard on a cruise ship) - inexperienced wait staff lacking supervision/direction, eg, wrong wines poured or no drinks offered at all, especially on the pool deck. - lukewarm food served on cold plates. - a general sense of chaos and poor morale behind, and sometimes in front of, the scenes. - rude, unfriendly, unhappy passengers. - invisible officers except captain playing happy families with his wife and kids. - not one gala or formal night. - it just wasn't the "special" one-off cruise of a lifetime we were promised and paid handsomely for. - the maiden voyage souvenir certificate/badge we were given was actually created to commemorate the previous so-called christening voyage when the Regent CEO and his mostly comped VIP buddies went for a spin in his new ship. We chose this cruise for its itinerary having sailed from Dubai to Cape Town via East Africa with Regent three years ago (a cruise which rated as one of the best we have ever done). A bonus was a chance to sail on the Explorer. We chose the pre-cruise experience on offer in Lisbon as the post cruise with a Safari meant coming home on Christmas Day! Pre-Cruise - Lapa Palace - good hotel but too far out of town and no good bars or restaurants nearby. Also, the buses couldn't get to it causing problems for excursions and transfer to boat. Not well organised. the second excursion was a disaster! Sintra was vaguely interesting but poor organisation meant a mile walk for coffee, loads of food which no one wanted and long delays resulting in lunch not arriving until well into the afternoon. The transfer to the boat was also poor. This is not the first time we have felt that Regent need to vet the pre and post tour operators more carefully. Initially the Explorer is much more impressive than any of the other three Regent ships despite their valiant attempts to upgrade them to match. You do feel this is luxury. Sadly, the ship did not live up to expectations. Suite, service and food were good, but lack of outside space spoilt the voyage. Very lush inside but if you wanted to sit outside it was a sunbed or one of ten or so seats at the pool bar. We enjoy sitting on deck during the morning and early evening with a coffee or drink. There is nowhere to do this other than the very limited seating round the pool bar which does not get the sun. Eating on the balcony of Veranda was good when the weather was fine, and it was open, but it shut for three days with no good explanation given! Something to do with a crew member getting bitten we heard eventually. Strange because we never saw an insect on the boat! The Pool Grill is mainly covered in. It was good to see they have got rid of the sauce bottles and some of the food was very good e.g. prawn skewers but the main choice was largely burgers (we don't consider that five-star luxury) and the whole place in our view resembles a diner. We did appreciate the speciality restaurants opening at lunchtime. The itinerary was as expected but not as interesting as East Africa, partly because the ports had little to offer (not Regent's fault). Destination Services did a good job in a difficult part of the world and we enjoyed the excursions. We were, however, disappointed not to go to Togo. Togo was taken out at what was said to be the last minute with no alternative provided. There has been unrest in Togo for a considerable time and with elections coming up on the 20th December this was clearly unlikely to abate. Regent are risk adverse at the best of times (which I understand although I do not necessarily agree with decisions) so it would seem clear that the chances of going to this port were slim. If indeed this was a last-minute decision, as said, then I agree it would be difficult to provide an alternative. However, the decision not to go should have been taken much earlier and provision other than sailing around the Atlantic in a circle made! Sao Tome early and Walvis for two nights perhaps. We choose cruises for the itinerary and while we are aware that ports may be omitted it appears to be quite a regular occurrence with Regent (more than with say Silversea or Seabourn). Entertainment was similar to other Regent Cruises - we don't generally participate in this and find daytime activities very uninteresting unless an early show is put on. Sally Jones was good, as usual and we appreciated her re-arranging her show due to illness. We did feel that there was an overemphasis on the classical pianist. It would be nice to see something other than Trivia, cooking demonstrations and bingo. Disembarkation in Cape Town was efficient, and the City tour we booked to fill the time before the flight good. Overall a good cruise but not one of Regent’s best. Read Less

Although I had sworn I would not sail Regent again after a terrible experience a few years back on Mariner (Istanbul-Istanbul), I was tempted by the new ship, positive comments by other cruisers and a convenient itinerary in the Med. A good price didn't hurt either! By way of background, we are regular cruisers on Seabourn (Gold) and Hapag-Lloyd Europa Gold), as well as 3 Crystal cruises (Silver (including their Yacht) and 1 Oceania Marina cruise. We are Silver on Regent. We were blown away by the pre-cruise transfers and hotel. Everything went super smoothly - plenty of staff available, private water taxi to Hotel Danieli in Venice, private water taxi to ship the next day. Air (inc. a deviation in Barcelona where we stayed longer) also very seamlessly handled. The Explorer is a beautiful ship, well laid out and with plenty of space. Although the ship was full, it never felt that way. We loved our PH (1408) - great location - and we got an excellent butler (Vinit). That is not always a given, believe me. I thought the hallway entry way space was not efficiently utilized though - a place to hang coats would be nice. Service was wonderful: consistently personable, always with a smile, attentive. They had plenty of staff, so we never waited in any of our dining venues, even when Compass Rose was full, especially after Captain's events, shows, etc. Never a problem. Dining: We were only able to secure 1 extra reservation (in Prime 7) in addition to the 3 allowed. Food was a disappointment for us. Nothing drastically wrong, just uninspired. Dishes sounded wonderful on paper, but really didn't deliver on the plate. Pacific Rim, which we really were looking forward to, was pretty watered down Asian cuisine. There were a few stand-out dishes (Miso black cod for one) but the sides were generally bad: The fried vegetable rice and the stir fried noodles (both recommended by our server) were gummy and inedible. We liked Chartreuse, Prime 7 was also fine. Compass Rose did better with standard items than adventurous ones, so if you're a steak/lobster/shrimp/repeat kind of person, I think you would be happy. Big negative for us: The wine. The first time in all my cruises, and I do mean all, that I was unsuccessful in obtaining a list (even hand written) of what complimentary wines they had. I asked our butler, our servers, every sommelier, including the head sommelier. What is important to me, as a trained Court of Masters Sommelier, is which winery the wine comes from. The 'somms' and servers I think are trained to stick to their story and not offer additional information. If you find out on your own, then you can have them if you ask. (I saw an Oyster Bay SB and an Ancient Vines Zin, for example, on another table.) Even a mid cruise comment card, detailing my woes, brought no response. I do understand that for 90% (maybe more) of the passengers, those 2 offerings per night were just fine. We're not cocktail drinkers, although we tried a couple here and there. It seems the cocktails are more the focus than wine. Explorer has many lovely bar venues with a wide range of cocktails and high quality liquor available. Shore excursions were about what you would expect from included offerings: Buses, sometimes several going to the same spot, with about 30 people per bus. Tour guides were not very good, and I was reminded of why we book independent arrangements :-). We did pay for 1 tour (to Syracuse) and it was certainly not any better than the 'free' tours. Disembarkation went as smoothly as embarkation. To sum it up, while I overall still prefer SB and Hapag Lloyd and Crystal, I would cruise with Regent again on Explorer (and possibly new ship Ovation) if the itinerary and price were right. Wouldn't do over 14 days though - food and wine not good enough to stay longer. Read Less

We did the Barcelona-to-Rome cruise leaving Barcelona April 2018 and had a great time. The room sizes are far better than any others we have seen, and include a walk-in closet and spacious bathroom--not amenities you normally find on a cruise ship. The public areas, bars, pool area were all great, and I particularly liked the health club on the 6th floor. In addition, Regent's arrival (at the airport) and departure experiences were really well done. We had been on a river cruise with AMA in 2017 and went on this cruise with a couple who had been on a different AMA river cruise last year. All of us thought that Regent's food, while OK, did not match AMA. Maybe that reflects preparing food for 750 versus 140, but anyway that's our view. The three specialty restaurants on the Regent Explorer were quite good, although again my wife and I thought our one dinner at the AMA "Captain's Table" was even more special. We thought the tours were generally pretty good, but there were two occasions where tours included stops at facilities that were just attempts to sell stuff to folks on the tour. One on Mallorca took the group quite a long way to a rather worthless tour of a synthetic pearl factory, ending with too much free time in the factory's gift shop. Then we had a tour to that began in the little French village of Eze, which is a fantastic place, and ended in Monaco, which is also well worth seeing. But stuck between them was a tour of a perfume factory, again dumping you in their showroom at the end, and providing more time than necessary. Regent should delete the commercial stops from their tours, in my view. Those are my suggestions for improvement; overall it was a great time and the experience generally matched up with the premium price Regent commands. We would probably sail with them again and are considering a Baltic cruise in a year or two. Read Less

Really a 4.5. Embarkation in Miami extremely easy especially if you were in one of the larger suites like we were--a Master Suite. But really it was only the difference between no wait and at most a 3-4 minute wait, there were over 15 agents taking care of the formalities. One unusual thing--first time ever in 2+ cruises that we were allowed to keep our passports. Ship itself is gorgeous--still has that new ship smell :). It's subjective, but it may live up to the "most luxurious cruise ship" tag from Frank del Rio. Master suite was very good with a couple of flaws that made us wonder if Frank had ever examined it personally. First,the living room couch was quite possibly the least comfortable couch we have ever tried to sit in. Very low and hard back. They had put lots of cushions on it, but all that meant was if you tried to sit up in it or lean back to watch TV you slipped off. Only one arm chair so only one person at a time could be comfortable watching a movie. Also, couch set up far too close to the TV for comfortable viewing. Butler and stewards moved the couch for us about four feet back for a proper viewing distance. TVs themselves large and proper Hi-def feed of a large movie selection. However, seems like most cruise lines these days content themselves with MSNBC and Fox news so if you want anything in the middle you get BBC. Moreover no ESPN so only Sky Sports and if you have a 75%+ American clientele all soccer all the time isn't great especially during March Madness. The other cabin oddity was no fewer than 15 switches (in rows of 3) that do exactly the same thing. You can turn on or off all the lights in the foyer, living room, and dining area at once but can't choose any subset. I sincerely hope they fix both of those things in drydock. We did get a chance to see the famous $5K/day/person Regent Suite as we got invited to a small dinner party there. It is over-the-top with built in spa, the $75K bed (apparently the Splendor will have a $150K bed), lots of Lalique crystal, etc. Food was generally excellent at both lunch and dinner (we believe strongly in sleeping in on sea days especially when losing an hour most nights going eastward). Lots of lunch venues open, both buffet and sit down. We found the food considerably better than that we have had on the other Regent ships, particularly in the MDR. The new MDR menu provided a huge number of choices and quality didn't slip because of that variety. There is a Senior Executive Chef who reports directly to the GM instead of two a F and B manager--we met him on a galley tour and he is extremely impressive. Of the specialty restaurants, Pacific Rim is surprisingly good--I put it that way because we are from N. California so are Asian food snobs. There was excellent variety and quality and most of the dishes were reasonably authentic. Yes the bulgogi was really a nice sliced steak with a soy-based sauce instead of the true Korean item and they should train the wait staff to pronounce the iconic Vietnamese soup pho as "fuh" vs. "foe," and the menu should make it clear you can get both hot and cold sake (it only says cold but they were happy to serve hot at the proper temperature). But those are minor quibbles. I rate the quality about as good as the Nobu restaurant on Crystal with more choices and actually better than Jade Garden on Oceania (which is good, not just nearly as authentic). They push the lobster tempura (which is good), but be sure to try the duck, the pho, the miso cod, and the stir-fried greens, and the green tea ice cream among other dishes. Chartreuse was also excellent in all respects although selection a bit limited. Much better than the earlier Regent Signatures incarnation. The whole dover sole is particularly good. Prime 7 a bit disappointing actually, appetizers, sides, and desserts very good, but steaks only fair without a proper char and not as marbled as prime steaks should be. Seti Mari is still a confused concept. Is it a buffet or sit-down restaurant? The bit of both doesn't really work IMHO. Toscana on Oceania hugely better for Italian food as is Prego on Crystal. The baker on Explorer is really good-both for desserts in the restaurants and especially at afternoon tea. Entertainment generally good to excellent. Production company one of the better ones we've seen--rivaling Crystal in that regard. Guest entertainers mostly very good to excellent--a husband-wife pair called "Somewhere it's Five O'Clock" was new to us and did two shows with actual modern pop and rock music (and some classic rock too). (Although we may have been the only couple that recognized their opening song "Little Talks"--that's by Monsters and Men if it comes up on a ship trivia quiz). However, the guest comedian was something out of the Dean Martin era when joking about drunk drivers and the female anatomy was considered funny. Nowadays it's both sexist and offensive. That caused me to downgrade the entertainment rating one notch. Service top-notch in all respects from wait staff to cabin attendants/butlers to cruise director and his staff. If anything Regent may have gone overboard in responding to some earlier comments in this forum about slow or mediocre service, at one dinner we counted 8 times a waiter, head waiter, or maitre'd came over to ask if everything was excellent. I thought of putting up a sign that said "things are perfect." The only problem with our butler was that he made us feel guilty we didn't give him enough to do--I had to convince him we could find our way to dinner without him. Internet service only fair. Sort of OK for first half of cruise, then they had problems switching satellites in mid-Atlantic which led to 3 days of unusable service. Not a matter of too much simultaneous use--service terrible at 2am during that period. The similarly sized SIlversea Silver Muse with a comparable passenger load and "free" internet throughout had almost land-based speed on a crossing we did six months earlier. Speed these days is simply a matter of money and technical competence. Finally ports and excursions, a fairly minor part of a crossing and particularly true on this voyage. There were five port days scheduled and two+ got cancelled. The first day in Bermuda, while it was sunny, winds were up to 60 mph gusts. Some deck furniture that was not completely tied down literally flew off the ship. So almost all excursions that day were canceled. Unfortunately that meant that re-scheduling everyone on excursions the second day proved impossible. Our tour in Funchal was just ok--guide could have been a lot better. The tour of the Nerja caves near Malaga was spectacular. If you haven't seen them you really need to do so. Largest underground "theaters" I've ever seen and an excellent guide. And then came the unique-to-us part of the cruise. We were sailing from Malaga to our last port of Alicante before ending in Barcelona. Our captain woke us at 3:30am to tell us that the ship was going to be making some unusual turns because a passenger had gone overboard on the Norwegian Spirit which was just ahead of us. Five ships in the area including several from the Spanish Coast Guard and two helicopters spent six hours searching the area--the passenger, who it turns out had jumped overboard, was never found. We were released from the search, skipped Alicante, and had an extra sea day. Overall, this was a very good to excellent crossing aboard a superb ship that I believe will get even better when they fix a few glitches. Read Less

We chose this cruise line upon advice of a travel agent and used it first in March of 2015 ( Navigator ). We felt guilty we were treated so well. the excursions and ports were all fantastic and we could not find enough time in the day to do or enjoy all the ship had to offer. The captain and many of the crew we recognized from the Navigator in 2015. That made us feel very confident. As with the previous cruise it was to celebrate our anniversary. In 2018 we sailed again, this time on the Explorer. It's a little bigger. The gym is definitely bigger and better. The restaurants all were great as well. Some of the docking was a bit inconvenient compared to previous trips. At Key West we docked opposite the main , downtown , area (less expensive docking fees? ) but we had a trolley take us to downtown. That particular shore excursion, "Discovering Key West" did not measure up. It was probably beyond Regent's control. We were supposed to visit an aquarium , a ship-wreck museum, and the tour of the town. The driver did an O.K. narrative but less than in 2015. When he dropped us off downtown, we, and many others asked about the ship-wreck museum and the aquarium. He responded by quickly stating it was included on our tickets but none of us EVER saw an aquarium ( it was at the other end of town ). The museum was an easy find. As with any cruise there's a few self-important, arrogant, haughty old idiots that think they're above everyone but the other 98% of those aboard were very unaffected and friendly. Overall, a pretty good trip and we'll do it again. Read Less

The speciality restaurants are glamorous and the food was what we would have expected. Great choices, wonderfully presented,and delicious. The only complaint here is that the Prime 7 and indeed all of them are difficult to get a booking. We had a Penthouse suite but even so we only managed to get in there once Our complaint was the Compass Rose. Not only was the food not up to standard but on the three occasions we ate in there, the service was poor and the food on each occasion was either cold or only lukewarm We shared a table on four occasions, all the people we shared with were delightful. On two occasions we actually all complained about the food and service to the staff, The last night of the cruise was exceptionally poor. The food took ages to come, our dining companions actually asked if the kitchen had lost our order. When my husband's steak came, it was only lukewarm and whilst waiting for his sauce to be brought, which seemed to be an afterthought, the steal went cold. While some of the staff are amazing, many in the Compass Rose seem to have a problem with the English language. Many seem very new so it's probably a training issue, and hopefully, they will improve. We chose this cruise to escape from the harsh NYC winter, check out the much-touted Explorer and celebrate our anniversary. This was our first Regent cruise, previously sailed on Seabourn, Paul Gauguin and Ponant (the latter with Tauck). First thing we noticed was the elderly (75+) demographic and lack of diversity among passengers. We are 60, fun loving, laid back and friendly. Didn't get to connect with others of our outlook and interests (did meet pretentious braggarts though). To be fair that could be due to the fact that the boat was crowded or we maybe just weren't lucky. This is a long review but hopefully will be helpful to some: First let's start with the good. Our cabin was large, nicely decorated and well laid out with plenty of drawer and closet space, a large double shower with grab bars and comfy king bed. PH was not much more than a verandah suite (price gap much bigger on Seabourn) and well worth it. However, as PH dwellers we did NOT have priority over others for excursions or specialty restaurants (as other reviewers have mistakenly posted). No, Regent is democratic that way, we were closed out of many things and treated just as badly as everyone else! A couple of evening shows were good (more on that later). Dinner at Setti Mari and Compass Rose excellent with many choices and good service. And oh that undulating blue chandelier in CRose, exquisite. Well padded comfy loungers around the pool, that is if you could find one that wasn't being saved by an inconsiderate person gone for hours. Elevators were quick and mostly not crowded. Common areas were beautifully decorated and spotless. Now for the bad: Breakfast and lunch buffets at La Verandah were crowded and disorganized. Food was not replenished quickly by staff who seemed overwhelmed by the fully booked cruise. Some staff members were friendly and tried their best to keep up with demanding clients, but many were sullen and inept. Specialty restaurants were fully booked early in the cruise so we had to share a table to try them, which could have been fun if our table mates had been pleasant (they were not!). Regent claims that most shore excursions are free, but many were fully booked early in the cruise so we couldn't join them. Destination Services staff ranged from clueless (didn't know the first thing about Regent excursions) to downright rude. Excursions are not "free" if they're unavailable right? We were hoping for enrichment lectures by an expert in Caribbean culture/history as we had on other cruises, instead got a retired guy talking about how to use a camera and relating boring personal anecdotes. Live music and entertainment was geared toward elderly country club crowd, even had a Peggy Lee tribute one night. A couple of evening shows were excellent (notably the one about the 60s), mostly corny. No reggae or decent rock music in lounges. Spa grossly overpriced even for a cruise, would not have gone there but had to use up shipboard credit or lose it. Think $195 for a hair conditioning treatment alone. Despite these issues, we do like Regent's all-inclusive concept and plan to try them again on another itinerary and hope things go better. I'll let you know how that goes. The ship was great. Unfortunately, the weather not so much so (but wasn't within Regent's control.) The cabin was spacious, particularly the bathroom area. The dinning was excellent in all of the dinning rooms. The staff was always attentive but never rushing. I particularly liked the wine selection. The listed wines were very good but the wine steward was always quick to offer other options at my request. The entertainment was good, but somehow the musical/dance group didn't quite match up to my experience on previous Regent cruises. I am not sure if it was the performers or the content of the show. The only real downside was the embarkation and disembarkation. The embarkation had passengers lined up outside in the rain even though the indoor area was almost empty. The disembarkation was chaotic. Passengers seemed to forgotten once they had stepped off the ship. There was basically no help in finding the airport bus. Maybe Regent doesn't control that but they should have enough impact to lobby for improvement. Read Less
