My family needed a cruise suitable for our range of ages and tastes and this family friendly, low stress cruise absolutely matched our needs. Very clean ship inside and out with friendly staff and fun entertainers. We travelled from Sydney, Australia to Melbourne and Hobart and then went to New Zealand getting stops at Port Chalmers, Akaroa, Tauranga and Auckland. There was a large variety of activities that suited the seniors in our group as well as the younger cousins, too. From Zumba to Bingo to jaw-dropping production shows, we were thoroughly entertained onboard. Food was easy to acquire and change to our tastes as necessary for those with food allergies. I am pleased to note that there were accessible shore excursions and the entire ship was accessible for people with mobility issues. The outside and inside of the ship were truly majestic, with details everywhere to enhance the experience for guests of any culture. Read Less

Wanted to go to Australia and this was the best value for the money, We hadn't gone on Princess before but had been told by a former travel agent that they were a good line. It was a great experience so we signed up for another cruise next February. The service was exceptional. Everyone was more than happy to help and everyone greeted us with a smile. Embarkation and disembarkation were so organzied with few delays if any. The food was great and always prepared they way it was requested. The Captain gave us an update every day which was appreciated. We were in heavy rough seas but the ship was so stable that it wasn't a problem. Our excursions went like clockwork for the most part and were just as advertised. We saw wonderful scenery and learned alot about Australia and New Zealand. I would recommend Princess Cruise lines to everyone. Read Less

First time on a Princess 'Royal class' ship and I was interested to compare this ship with the 'Crown class' ships I'd previously sailed on. Well I can confirm it's big, and although there were some pluses in the experience, for me, I felt that Majestic was a little too big. As usual embarkation (Elite) was seamless. Even the photographers respected our polite no thank you, although sadly they reverted to normal at the port gangways. Did not like being mauled by that Panda! Our cabin was great, although the balcony was a little small and our steward was excellent. I thought that storage space was far better than the smaller ships. Lifts. I don't need to use them but when I did I found that I needed to wait longer than on previous ships, particularly at peak times. Alfredo's. Wonderful! Particularly liked the small pasta dishes. Service was always excellent and the pizza was cooked to perfection.(unlike in other reviews) International cafe. Good. but not as good as previously.Friendly service at breakfast. pastries v.good. Not always possible to get waiter even when quiet but always managed to find one. Coffee card now electronic so you can't carry it over to next cruise but still great value. Some confusion over which line is for coffee and which is for food. A few people very grumpy if they feel you're jumping the line, particularly in the morning. Walking the deck.On sea days I've got into the habit of an hour deck walk. Not easy on this ship. Previously I've walked Prom deck but this isn't really viable on Majestic. .Had to use upper decks which provided little shelter from the wind. ( Fortunately it was mostly dry). Elite perks. Mostly very good. Wife loves free laundry. One thing not as good. On past trips we were allowed to access the tenders by showing our cards at a time of our choosing. This didn't happen on this cruise. Yes, we had a separate waiting area and we probably got off the ship quicker than others but there was still a long wait. Dinning. World Fresh Marketplace Good variety of food and mostly excellent quality. Tea, coffee somewhat problematic with some machines empty or out of order. Didn't like the seating set up. Certainly not the place for a quite Lunch on a sea day Anytime Dining. It's a small thing but on my many previous Princess voyages I cannot recall an occasion when my water glass was allowed to empty. Not so on this ship. Service was inconsistent. Some of the waiters seemed to lack confidence, others didn't appear to pay attention to detail and on one night the waiter thought that he was auditioning for a comedy show! (He wouldn't have got the part). The food was comparable to other smaller ships. Captains Circle event. Better than anything we'd experienced before.: generous with drinks, relevant and mercifully short. Exceeded expectations. Theatre.. Simply too small. Not happy about having to arrive over half an hour early to secure a seat. Missed some shows I'd have liked to see, due to this. Gym Not big enough. Very busy at peak times. Enrichment programme. Hoped that a larger ship would have a greater range but this was not the case. Flash sales, bingo, quizzes were the norm. The Maori Ambassadors were a shinning light in an otherwise unenlightening experience. Disembarkation. Late and a little chaotic. Maybe due to numbers? I would not discount using the larger ship again, but ,on balance, I would prefer a smaller one. Read Less

We enjoyed every moment of our cruise! After being reluctant to cruise in the past we have now been opened up to a whole new world! We found the cruise exceeded all our expectations. Our mini stateroom was immaculate, comfortable, spacious and with excellent storage, we slept soundly each night. The staff we encountered were friendly, professional and always helpful. The food and bar services were of a high standard with so many options to choose from including many healthy options along with the more decadent choices! The ship is beautiful and although large there is ample room to enjoy quiet spaces and you never feel crowded. We particularly enjoyed the enclosed pool and surrounding areas. We felt that we had been away for a lot longer than 12 days, returning relaxed and grateful for such a wonderful experience. We have changed our opinion on cruising and look forward to future cruises. Read Less

We booked 2 years ago and have been used to the Diamond and Golden Princess size ships. We didn't find it too big to walk around but we felt that the public rooms had been enlarged a little but too many people crowded into them causing congestion and a lot of noise. The practice of using the Piazza for activities such as Line Dancing classes instead of the Vista Lounge was a bad move. Most people go to the Piazza to sit down, have a coffee and meet people. When the so-called music started and a female with high pitched voice started yelling instructions into the microphone you couldn't hear yourself think. The music was not good apart from the piano player Marius because once again it was too high pitched and loud. The impressionist was excellent. Where, oh where, were the string quartets and trios??? Because it affected all the music mayabe the amplification was at fault. I daren't wear my hearing aids in the Piazza for fear of ear damage so consequently had trouble hearing people. On sea days you could hardly move because there were too many people around. The activities in the public area were not well planned when everybody was coming out of the lounges at the same time and trying to get through people who were waiting. The sudoku puzzle wasn't changed in the IT room. The Passenger Service staff on the whole didn't seem to know what they were doing and were quite unhelpful when a seat collapsed under me in the Princess Theatre. They wanted me to go to the doctor in 2 hours time when they opened and pay for it myself. We had to fill in 4 reports that essentially said the same thing and no apologies. Cabin staff were mediocre but Concerto dining staff were excellent even if the food was a bit tasteless. Read Less

The embarkation and disembarkation from this ship was extremely smooth and well managed. We have travelled previously on the Royal Princess, so found this ship very familiar although it does have some differences and is more targeted at Chinese passengers with much of the signage and announcements being in dual language. I did miss the Pizzeria by the pool which is on the Royal, which is replaced with Chopsticks Noodle Bar on this ship. The Hollywood pool club is a wonderful area on the ship. Not only does it has an indoor pool, it also has floor to ceiling windows with comfortable chairs to enjoy the views. The entertainment on board had been modernised significantly, it was current and vibrant, with lots of theatrics, which was great to watch. We didn't take any of the ship tours, as we have found that we could book the same tours for less through viator. We had a lovely trip and would happily cruise on this ship in the future. Read Less

My wife and I chose this cruise to find out about this new ship. Dining in the Concerto restaurant at 5.15 was as we requested and we found the food to be of excellent quality The Theatre was good but we found it lacking a tray to put your drinks as on the Sun and Sea Princesses. Also not enough seating in the Piazza when entertainment was on We did not dine at the Market on deck 16 as we found it hard going in different places. the best layout was as in the Sun and Sea Entertainment was excellent even though you had to go at least 20 minutes earlier to get a seat Another thing we missed was the Wheelhouse which was a good place to go and listen to music and dancing Will we travel on it again PROBABLY Enbarkation was smooth it took 15 minutes to get onboard the same when disenbarking The waiters we had in the dining room were excellent and would get anything we asked for Read Less

In Sydney, for the size of the ship and the amount of passengers embarking, I was very impress with how quickly and smoothly the customs / security area was. Being the newest ship in the Princess fleet, I was truly amazed with the overall impression of the ship. I originally booked an inside cabin on level 16, which I was happy with. Half way through the cruise, I was upgraded to an outside balcony cabin on level 8, I was very impressed by this. The dining area were always very clean and the food was good with always a good selection. The entertainment / on-board activities and the staff who hosted the events were all good and professional. The service from all staff was friendly, happy and professional at all times. The ports and excursions were very good and well organised. I would definitely like to sail on this ship again in the future. Read Less

We took this cruise for convenience as it was round trip from Sydney, our home city. The standard of this cruise is very average, in terms of foods and activities. Public areas not enough, probably they have more rooms instead for revenue?! Extremely crowded theatres, everyone need to go there at least 20-30 minutes before showtime to secure a seat! We arrived 30 minutes before showtime at the Vista Lounge, there was no seat! Central area is too small to dance or do anything for the number of passengers on this ship! There were not enough varities of activities on the many sea days. Staff are very efficient, very smooth operations in embark and disembark, we got on and off the ship without much waiting at all. In the dining rooms, staff are well mannered and efficient too, meals arrived hot not warm, although the choices are limited I feel, as I do not take fish. Luckily the weather was on our side, so it was enjoyable cruise overall....... Read Less

After cruising with Princess only once in America I wanted to try one from my home port of Sydney and when Majestic was open for booking I jumped on and booked over 2 years before our cruise date. I talked my parents into coming along and trying out Princess and I think it is now their cruise line of choice. I could not fault the ship at all, staff were all fantastic and with a large passenger number it was very organised and run perfectly. I still found they cater a bit too much for the older crowd so the entertainment got pretty boring fast and there was just too much violin. We were lucky to have violinist Chris Watkins onboard and he was phenomenal, the only violin I enjoyed. The buffet is pretty limited compared to other lines (Celebrity and NCL) but done well. Alfredos Pizzeria is amazing but I really missed the pizza bar on pool deck,Chopstix noodle bar was awesome and Crown Steakhouse was fantastic but I found the menu a bit limited for starters. We had an aft balcony on deck 9 and I think we had the best deck but soot was a big problem, although or cabin steward cleaned daily it was back pretty quickly but I wouldnt hesitate to book the same again, loved it. The best of NZ Fjordland is to be experienced on cruise ships. Majestic Princess is a new and beautiful ship. The cruise into the Sounds was excellent! Our balcony cabin is of standard size and is very clean. I don't believe in paid dining on cruise ships but this time we paid to dine in Harmony restaurant and it was very good. The British pub lunch however was disappointing. We chose "fish & chips" and the fish was definitely not Cod Fillet as advertised on the menu. The pizzas in Alfredo were undercooked and taken a long time to be served. I had a pasta that was still cold inside. There's a slight disappointment to see the Princess Theatre (and also Vista Gaming Lounge) designed quite small in relation to the size of the ship. There were often people left standing to watch the shows. There was a lack of overall enthusiasm from the staff and there was quite often service-without-a-smile. I have personally experienced and also witnessed this lack of service from some bar/buffet staff and also the front desk. I like Princess and am a platinum level Captain Circle member, so is my partner. However this was the first Princess cruise that we experienced impersonal and mediocre service so we would like Majestic to take this feedback on board and improve their service please. Read Less

We enjoy cruising on different ships and were keen to sail on Majestic Princess. However before we sailed I had read some rather poor reviews about the ship and the differences in regard to other ships in the Princess fleet. Well thank goodness I did not let these reviews influence my opinion of the ship. There was a wide demographic of ages and nationalities on board (1800 Aussies, 1000 USA and 700 others), many different bars, indoor and outdoor activities. This cruise was absolutely fantastic and I can not recommend this ship enough. The facilities are fabulous and there is something to suite everyone's taste in entertainment and food. The staff go out of their way to please and are very friendly and engaging with the passengers. The cruise director Andrew was a gem and his enthusiasm is infectious. I believe that you make of a holiday what you want and as everything in life if you want to find fault you will. I urge anyone considering sailing on the Majestic Princess - Do IT. Read Less

ship was very nice, crew on board were great. the cruise directors team were fantastic one helped with a temporary fix to the brake cable on my walker. we were surprised to find that there no longer cups given with drink package but instead got two large bottles of water, we had planed on keeping the cups to use as gifts and feel that the bottled water was a waste. the dinning room team were excellent in looking after us making sure i knew which foods were safe for me to eat with my food allergies. we enjoyed the shows but feel that there is not enough seating for passengers with disabilities, there should also be a way of stopping people standing at top of stairs and blocking the view of the people sitting at back of theater, i was sitting next to stairs and heard lots of arguments over this. the only negative for me was that my walker could not get past the steward trolleys in hallway when i was trying to get to or from room. once i was stuck for ten minutes until a crew member came past and moved trolley for me to get to room. i have not had this on other princess ships. Elegant Ship.Loved, that our Captain played the "Love Boat" theme when we departed from Sydney. Loved the Sea Walk. Love that more seating areas have been added to the Atrium. Those that travel on a Princess Ship know that a lot of activities take place in the Atrium. Apart from the 1st day (embarkation) it was hard to believe there were more than 3,700 passengers on board. She is a big elegant ship. After a while you don't think anything off the size. She is another beautiful Princess Cruise Ship. Staff are great and friendly. Cabin lovely, bed comfortable. We had a balcony as I enjoy sea days (if fine) relaxing on our balcony. Entertainment right up there with the best. Food will, what can I say..always delicious. So many choices. Loved the Hollywood pool and area. Love the pool in the Lotus area. Well worth the money. We had perfect weather from the time we left Sydney. Such smooth waters 99.9% of the time. We will look forward to our next cruise on the Elegant Majestic. :-) My ratings for excellent is because we cant fault our time on our cruise... Read Less

Take a lot of money. Yes, its expensive in Australia, but the expenses on the ship keep on mounting. A glass of wine $14.00.Cosmopolitan $16.00. They have taken away the 2 for 1 cocktail hour. The cost of the shore excursions is just plain ridiculous. Two ports we were in, we had to pay for a shuttle to town. We used to get a coupon book that at least had a few coupons we could use, gone. The art gallery ( look hard or you will miss it ) is tucked into a tiny corner by a huge photo gallery. The menu in the diningroom is so geared to people other than Canadians and Americans, if you like fish only , you should. be happy. Not once was there pork or turkey, just fish, fish and more fish, missing also is the traditional new York cheesecake and crème brulee. We stood on top deck for 2 hours and did not have one bar staff around. There is a 1.1% surcharge added to your bill that princess collects. Read Less

In spite of having iffy reviews, This cruise was sold out several weeks before the sail date. I think it's because even though most cruise lines have become annoying with their nickel and dime tactics, it's still the most comfortable way to visit several places without spending time on travel from one destination to another and packing and unpacking luggage every day. I take cruises for just that reason. I always ignore it and don't fall for the games when cruise lines try to get the better of me (or my money) while on the ship. Majestic did a few things to annoy me. Bottle of water prices are ridiculous. Pizza restaurant Alfredo's is free, but you are only allowed to eat your meal inside the restaurant and cannot take leftovers with you. I suspect it's because there is a $3.00 room service charge for pizza and the ship would loose out on those funds if everyone were to order their pizzas for pickup. Very petty and annoying. In the casino, the roulette betting was misleading. The table displayed "$2 to $50" chips, but minimum bet was $10.00. Prices of the specialty restaurants were outrageous. I would pay $40 extra per couple for a special meal, but not twice that much. I was told that the Aussies pay more per person than those of us from the United States. The reason for this is since the Aussies generally do not pay gratuities, their cruise fare has the daily per person gratuity built in whereas US citizens (and probably others) pay the lower fare but are charged a daily gratuity on their shipboard account. The ship was a typical cruise ship with all the glitz and glamour. Staff were very very nice and made sure your trip was great. In spite of the annoyances, it was a great cruise and shore excursions were excellent. It boils down to whether you are willing to pay or ignore the extra costs. I always go in knowing that the total fare is going to be more than I paid. One interesting note for those who try to save on the cost of alcohol - On the Australia cruise, we ordered the room service spirits. Even though the little bottles were expensive - about 20.00 AUD each- for 375 ml - they were still way cheaper than buying a drink at the bar (14.00 or so AUD per drink]. Over the course of 12 days of drinking that is a lot of savings. Read Less

Missed ports last cruise due to bad weather. This cruise was very good, only problems were greedy people keeping reserved seats for shows, policing by ship should have been better. also many People entering pools and spas, did not shower as requested by signs before entering,. Shore excursions from ship were good but a bit expensive as was the, price of drinks, could not see the duty free or GST exemption reflected in price. Buffet set up is messy as is trying to get a table, service in buffet area not very good. Movies in cabin were a bit dated and there was no current shows. The area for Elite passengers to get together each evening has been moved from Crooners bar to Vista Lounge a better idea, except that if you have formal dining at 5-15 pm it is hardly worth while attending hours shoul be advanced by a half an hour to give you a chance to enjoy yourself instead of rushing ir not going. Princess Happy hour has disappeared, where for an extra dollar you could buy a second drink, Not Good. We absolutely Loved the experience the first time and wow we truly loved this one too. Majestic Princess did not disappoint. It’s the WOW SHIP. Tge cruise staff go above and beyond to make each passenger feel welcome and at home. The service is outstanding. From your stateroom to the dining room it truly is wonderful. We , my husband and two daughters 15 and 18 all loved our cruise to New Zealand . We all made great friendships and have wonderful memories of the ship , crew and the activities/entertainment . We all can’t wait for our next cruise. If you haven’t cruised yet you must put it on your to do list. You will absolutely love it and wish you had cruised earlier. A diversion took us to Picton which was fantastic. We missed the Fiordlands though. The entertainment at night was fantastic and the evening meals good. The buffet courts are confusing and you never know where to find what. A proper map of the setup should have been posted. There are no pools at the back which is very poor. In fact the pools are totally insufficient for this size ship considering that the only adult zone is totally enclosed. Loved my cruise but very disappointed with the mini suite and the pools. The cruise director was full of life and kept us posted of everything without being intrusive. The dancers were spectacular and I would have loved more shows with them. Embarkation: Got on and found the water to be $6.50 for a 1.5 Lt rip-off And all beers to be $8.75 per stubbie Day 2: International bar Went for early morning coffee at 6am, which was very weak and bitter and order was made wrong by Milan. He did remake it for me but no better. For next 5 days the coffee was the same and my order was stuffed up each time buy the same barista and needed him to remake it each day. I noticed every one who ordered coffee their order was stuffed up as well on these days. I think retraining is needed their. So I did not waste any more money on coffee. Was also told at least twice about 4.30am that I would need to come back at 5.30am to get something to eat. So much for a 24 hour snack bar. Bars: It was observed that at all bars they were not putting a full nip in mixed drinks ( jack daniels & coke ) when question about it the staff were happy to call people a liar. So no more money spend on over priced low quantity drinks. Most bars told us that ice water is found in the market place area and that’s where you should go to get it. Lotus spa: On day 1 we bought the enclave pack $299.00 it was a great place but needed to stop going their for hygiene reasons and no protection from germs being spread by other passengers. Found a passenger using the hair drier to dry his private parts. Did not find any hand sanitiser on entry or near the self serve water. Constant hard sell by staff was annoying. They were sending out advertising material to the room and instructing it be placed on our bed in our staterooms which was done without knocking or knocking and just walking in which on 2 occasions we were in the room having a sleep or private time and we had some messenger boy walk in. This was unnecessary as their is a mailbox outside the front door no need to enter my room. As far as I no the room steward, maintenance and security are the only people allowed in my room with out my permission ( privacy laws ) We won some gift vouchers and made a booking for treatments but when staff found out about vouchers booking time were changed to a time when we would need to be at dinner which was unsuitable for us. Excursion: Found to be double or more than local operators prices, and had privately booked tours cancelled because princess forced them too by using stand over tactics. Some of these were booked up to 8 months in advance to secure our spots. The locals operators apologies but told us it was out of their control and princess cruiser were the ones who were forcing them to cancel us. Restaurant: Were very good and most staff excellent. Food servings a bit small and the food sometimes tough from over cooking or left in warmers to long, ice cream was always delivered half melted. No New Zealand wines on menu and all wines over priced. We also found the dress code was not enforced In the dinning rooms on formal nights with people allowed in in tee shirts and jeans or shorts. This was also the case at the platinum & Ellite captains circle party. The once high standards of princess has been lowered dramatically and at times I thought I was on a Sydney harbour ferry. Destinations: Dunedin and Fiords cruising canceled for safety reasons and Picton was put in to replace Dunedin but no replacement for a full day cruising the Fiords, this allowed the ship to cruise back to Sydney at 14 notts and that would have been a great saving to princess. At this stage we have not been offered any compensation. When I check the weather charts supplied by the captain the swell and wind was no higher than what we got on Wednesday in open ocean on our way back to Sydney. Which princess should have none about as the weather charts indicated that the bad weather that stopped us from going to the fiords was moving north and we would get it anyway. If we cruised close to shore we would miss most the high swells but this would not allow the casino or gift shops to open. This suggest to me that the ports were changed for lost income more than for safety. A large amount of passengers were also of the same opinion and wanted some compensation. We paid an extra $1000.00 per person to secure a balcony at the rear of the ship for the scenic cruising which we would not normally do, so we felt ripped off again. I pick this cruise at this time for the ship and the itinerary as it was advertised as going to fiords first but found out to late that it was going north island first to be able to change to a different departure date. Photos: Very little effort was put into have a nice background for onshore photos and found the quality of photography to be very poor. Even the formal and casual photos on the ship had little effort put in to make sure the photos taken were good, some photographers did not even check each shot after taking them to see if they were any good which resulted in poor quality and no photos were bought because of this. I wanted to buy a Nikon P900 camera but the price was $799.99 which I was told was duty & tax free but when I checked the price with my local camera shop near my home I found them to be priced at $698.00 including tax & duty. When I checked with Nikon in Japan I was told a price of under $600.00 Australian delivered to my residence in Australia. I ask them camera shop to price match and was told no. Another sale lost for your company. Casino: We went to play roulette and the sign at the table said $2.00 to $50.00 chips. But once we purchased chips we were told we must bet a minimum of $10.00 per each and every spin. So we cashed out and I have sent an email to the Australian gamberling authorities to investigate as this seems to be wrong to me and have never encounter this before on any of the 10 cruises I have done. Entertainment: This was found to be top quality but show times were not planned as good as other cruises we have been on with show times 8pm & 10pm. This ment if you were on late dinner you could only go to the late show and this made bed time after 11pm. On your other cruise ships show times lined up with dinner times so when first dinner sitting in the restaurant was on, the 1st show would be on & the same at the second dinner sitting ( 1st show at 6pm & 2nd show at 8pm) this allowed everyone a chance at getting a seat in the theatre and not have to go to bed late or miss the show, as some people would go to the early show and stay for the second show reducing the seating in the second show. We went on this cruise with a friend who was celebrating his 50th birthday. We had been on the Diamond Princess before, so expected the newer Majestic Princess to be just as good. Sadly it wasn't. Worse cruise we've ever been on. *Noisy cabin *poor food - marketplace was bland and food was overcooked and dry, too much asian food *small entertainment venues with not enough seating, especially the small piazza area where the dancing was - so overcrowded, not enough room for everyone *problems with the soft drink package - when it clearly states fresh fruit juice included, however whenever I ordered some I was told it wasn't. Staff would argue with me, telling me I was wrong (nice attitude staff!) *poor layout of ship, not enough places for those of us who like dancing *night time entertainment was on too close together, or at the same time, so we missed some things, *incompetent staff that continually got orders wrong - I asked for no ice in my drinks, and so many times got ice. Ordered vodka, lime & soda specifically asked for lime cordial.. drink came without cordial and not even a piece of lime, *far too many health/beauty talk. We were told there were many complaints about this ship, and I'm not suprised. Would never sail on the Majestic Princess again Read Less

Princess keeps improving its standards for passengers with special dietary needs. This has been my sixth cruise with Princess and it just gets better and better. The head waiters are ultra-attentive because they want to make sure you get the best out of your dining experience. The chefs go out of their way to make sure you get to experience food the way everyone else does. Escargot cooked in margarine because you can't eat butter? Not a problem! Can't have ice cream? How about rice milk semifreddo? Going on a shore excursion where there might be food? That's not a problem either. I was pleasantly surprised to find a form in my cabin where I could detail my dietary requirements. This was forwarded to the venue for the shore excursion I chose. When everyone else was eating cheese scones and sweet muffins at Hobbiton, I was eating two gluten-free, dairy-free cakes. Something as simple as this is very much appreciated. Add in an unbelievable entertainment experience - 5 tribute acts, 3 Broadway-style shows, aerialists, a juggler and a magician - Wow! And the activities organised by the cruise director's staff - absolutely amazing and such fun. Unfortunately the weather got the better of us and we missed out on Port Chalmers and Fiordlands but Picton was a delightful seaside town and the cruise staff stepped up the entertainment because of the extra sea day. We chose this cruise as we wanted to cruise on the newest Princess ship in Australia, the Majestic Princess, this particular cruise fitted in with our holiday time available, and it went to both Islands of New Zealand, which we had on our Wishlist after visiting the South Island on Emerald Princess two years’ ago. We flew in from Perth the evening prior to our cruise departing and stayed at the Adina Hotel Apartments close to the airport (fully recommend this place), and then caught the train into Circular Quay. Our first view of the beautiful Majestic Princess was breathtaking and the cruise itself didn’t disappoint! Embarkation was smooth as usual for Princess. We were allowed into the OPT by 10:30 am and onboard by 11 am. The welcoming staff invited us to put our hand luggage in our stateroom, even though the steward had not completed his duties there, so we were able to quickly do that before doing our traditional tour of the new ship. The ship being quite new was oustanding in its appearance! From the dazzling Piazza to the beautiful artwork and decor throughout the ship, the Majestic is very impressive. We did miss the opportunity to walk around a full Promenade deck, but there are lots of other areas to provide exercise, if desired. We were in an starboard aft balcony stateroom and enjoyed that very much. The room was always spick and span, and there was plenty of storage room for clothes etc, with an abundance of coat hangers, much to my wife’s delight! We thoroughly enjoyed the embarkation lunch in the Concerto dining room, thanks to CC tipsters. We were assigned to the Allegro dining room for tea at 5 pm, and used that on a few occasions, depending on the menu for the day. One negative point to note is that although booking a table for two, in Allegro the tables were so close together that it may as well have been a table for ten! Interestingly, this was not the case in the Concerto for the two lunches we ate there. So if you are looking for a quiet, intimate, romantic table for two, avoid the Allegro. The food itself in the MDR was of usual Princess standard, with a certain sameness appearing during the two-week voyage. The food in the Marketplace was excellent, we found, with good variety and contrary to many CC reports we had read earlier it was always hot, not warm. We also tried the Noodle Bar and Alfredo’s Pizzeria and were impressed with the standard of food at both of these complimentary food outlets. We didn’t eat at any of the specialty dining places, but can understand the criticism of the location of the La Mer restaurant. Being so close to the Piazza must surely detract from the atmosphere of a Michelin Star restaurant. We enjoyed one live show at the Princess Theatre, Fiero. It was quite full but we did find a seat, even though we arrived just before the show started. From observation, some shows did appear very popular and would have been difficult to get a seat for. Some were shown via video link to other parts of the ship. We did catch some of the live performers in the Piazza and similar places around the ship. Whilst entertaining, it wasn’t outstandingly so, we felt, but admittedly this is very much a personal preference thing. Nonetheless, it was very relaxing to enjoy a coffee and cake from the International Cafe (IC) whilst listening to some pleasant background music. We did enrol in the Enclave at the Lotus Spa ($299 per couple). Whilst we made some use of this, scheduling to use the spa and saunas was challenging with so much happening on the ship and on shore days. We probably didn’t get the full value out of this and wouldn’t likely be tempted in the future with this. The Internet service deserves a mention—it was painfully slow! Fortunately we only used our complimentary internet time to check emails, etc, so we were largely spared the frustration! The library was small but with quite a good selection of books, and there was ample board games to be borrowed and used. Again, it was very relaxing playing Yahtzee in the adults only Hollywood Conservatory, which is well equipped with an undercover swimming pool, spa pools, and cabanas. The service staff onboard were as usual excellent! Waitstaff in Allegro were friendly, helpful and amusing, and the behind-the-counter staff in the IC were outstanding. The front desk staff were helpful when my wife lost a piece of jewellery and it was recovered within 24 hours. Very impressive! Our steward, Maynard, was efficient and unobtrusive. The intinerary introduced us to a new port in NZ, Tauranga, and we absolutely loved the visit here. The magnificent beach with its adjacent alfresco cafes was stunning, and the climb up Mt Manganui presented a vista well worth the effort. The only downside was that due to the late arrival time in Tauranga (10 am), the walk up the mountain was done in the heat of the day, and being a hot day it was quite physically draining. A cruise that lands earlier in the morning would make this shore excursion far more enjoyable. The other shore highlights for us were the visit in Wellington to the Te Papa Museum, which was hosting the Terracotta Warriors display. This was an outstanding exhibit! Also, we again enjoyed visiting Akaroa. This beautiful French style town has so much to see. This trip we did the lighthouse tour (thanks Tom and Clive for such an informative commentary) and visited the Garden of Tyne bush walk which had some fascinating bird life. Next time we’ll remember our binoculars and NZ bird book! The museum in town and the town library are also well worth a visit. The only negative I could make about our shore visits would be the HOHO bus in Auckland. The price for this service ($45 pp) is a rip-off, and it is one of the worst organised services of it’s kind I have encountered. Half of the bus trip was spent waiting for passengers to fill whatever seats happened to be empty (no standing allowed apparently), having to do this as they negotiated the steps on the double-decker bus without tripping over prams etc which were stored in the aisles and exit of the bus! What a schemozzle! We used this service primarily to visit the Kelly Tarlton’s Sea World display ($30 pp) which was great value, especially the penguin area and Scott’s Hut display. Given our time again, we would catch the free shuttle out to Sea World and skip the HOHO bus. Whilst on shore excursions, I must mention that we did miss Dunedin and Fiordland due to poor weather conditions, which would have been disappointing for ones who had booked with these highlights in mind. We had seen them on our last trip, so we weren’t too disappointed, and appreciated the skill of the captain and crew in ensuring a pleasant and safe cruise. In summary, this was a memorable cruise on an oustanding ship! We have already booked other cruises with Princess, and wouldn’t hesitate to go on Majestic again. Read Less
