We were handed beepers our first three dinners because the dining room was too full and had to wait for 45 minutes...it felt like we were at a Chili's or something... Not a good first impression The food is pretentious and portions are very small. The Lido deck is not a buffet and you are forced to ask someone to plate your food for you. This causes lines and long waits for something as simple as a Caesar salad. FIRE!! There was also a fire on our cruise that was announced over the ships intercoms. My wife was in tears after that and left a very poor taste in our mouths. Beware Vegetarians!! Usually there was only one vegetarian option. We asked to have meals just without the meat multiple times are we're told no... If you love beets and mushrooms, this is your ship though. Cilantro is on everything... Lots of people hate this stuff...beware. Portion sizes are TINY compared to a cruise lines like Princess. Where I received a full beef wellington on princess, I only received a slice on HAL. Also, it was cooked medium and the breading was a soggy mess when I got it... The entertainment is awful. They have one good band (BB King band) and the rest is shockingly bad. There was an hour long presentation on the "art of towel folding".... If thats not bad enough, Microsoft also has daily seminars on how to use Windows 10...I'm not joking, this is the entertainment on your cruise. The staff is really the only shining light on this ship. All of them were incredibly friendly, but there are just so many drawbacks about this ship. We will never come back and definitely would not recommend sailing with them unless you get a massive deal. Read Less

No one told me it would be impossible to change large Euro notes. Guest services warns against taking large notes on tour excursions yet refused to change my 200 Euro note so I could have smaller notes. The person at guest services went to plead my case to the purser. The purser opened the door, looked at me from the doorway, then went back in and the guest services person returned to say the purser had refused my request. I saw they had plenty of change, so this was unreasonable. They did say I could buy Eu200 on my credit card for 3% commission. The next concern I had was with the service charge which now appears daily on our account. No one told me it would cost US14.50 per day, per person. I have always left what I thought was a generous tip to those that gave me exceptional service but have never been forced to tip. For a family of 4, this means you need to budget US580 for tips. This has resulted in the crew not needing to try so hard with their service. For example, I drink tea instead of coffee. Every other cruise, staff have recognised me and automatically remembered this, but not on this cruise. In fact they even tried to keep topping me up with coffee. We tried to book The Dining room several times and the only time available was 5.45pm. Much too early. We tried to walk up and were told nothing was available. On our second last day another passenger said that if we walked up and said we were willing to share a table, they would give us a pager and we could wait in a bar. This should have been communicated to us on at least one of the occasions we tried to book. But when they are assured of a ‘tip’ their service standard drops. Also we did not make use of all of the facilities, so why should our service charge go to those areas when we wouldn’t normally tip them. And why do they put an additional 15% service charge on drinks and coffee? We also had a problem with IT where it could not properly print one of our stateroom cards. This was going to prevent us leaving the boat as the name would not print on the card due to its length. Three times we had to go to customer service and explain our situation all over again, despite them saying they would bring a new card to our room. They kept forgetting about us. The poor customer service really impacted on my holiday. Also I travelled with my sister and they gave us a double bed when we had asked for a twin. I asked for bottles of water on arrival and had to wait until the following day for it to arrive. Then we had a $37.50 beverage charge appear on our account by mistake. This was removed. We took a four meal dining package and the steaks in Pinnacle were nice but not as tender as the wagyu in Chops on the Ovation, but we would have had to pay a surcharge for that. Also included in the meal package was sushi but it didn’t compare to the 5 star sushi on the Ovation, where the soft shell sushi was amazing. The one on the Koningsdam was mostly rice and no shell that I could see. I was told they brought the crab in from another restaurant so it was not cooked by the sushi chef. The barramundi in red curry sauce that I ate in Tamarind was delicious. We returned to Tamarind on the last night to have rijstafel which cost US$30. I saw the menu which had about ten dishes on it and looked very traditional. After soup and salad starter, the other eight dishes were served together on one plate. Not very traditional and not the ‘rijstafel experience’ we expected. To top it off after this meal, I needed the toilet. The cleaner followed soon after and wouldn’t leave until she had serviced my toilet. She banged on the door three times in two minutes, despite me acknowledging her. The Planet earth show with an orchestra playing background music was excellent but too short (40mins). The rest of the entertainment was average. The free movies available in our cabin were recent and plentiful. The food in the complimentary areas was excellent although the msg used in the Asian Fusion area disturbed my sleep. We loved The Grand Dutch Cafe and returned several times for their coffee and croquettes. The shore tours are expensive but very good. We had a nice holiday but it will have to be a very good sale price to get us to try Holland America again. Read Less

This cruise had a good itinerary. We stayed for 3 days in Rome, it was a disgrace, with rubbish piled up in the streets everywhere. Embarkation was very efficient. However, the entertainmemt is very poor. There is no orchestra, no big dance productions, just 6 ballet style dancers. hALmust be cost cutting. There was no library. BB Kings played the same music every night. The Lido buffet was always crowded , with lines for everything, no self service so you had to explain what you wanted. Some of the servers had difficulty understanding English. Activities consisted of bingo or trivia, no dancing classes at all. The computer classes were impossible to access as ithey. were always packed. Internet expensive. Hard sell constantly for beauty salon. The decor on the ship is dingy. The Cruise Director did very little, apart from introducing stage acts. He rarely smiled and ever made a joke!! Overall a big disappointment. We will never sail o HL again. Read Less

This started poorly with the embarkation process. Very unorganized and SLOW. once onboard, no music (Usually a calypso band playing on other cruise lines), no welcome drink. To top it off, we didn’t leave Port for four hours waiting for the meat delivery! Holland did nothing to compensate for this late departure. Most lines will serve drinks or snacks or SOMETHING to ease the pain of inconvenience. Thie ship was nice, but the availability of entertainment was far less than mediocre. Also, the service was almost nonexistent at the pool and on deck. Had to keep going to the bar. The main pool was like a sauna because they didn’t fully open the roof! Forget about late-night - no food and not many entertainment options. The Main Stage Theater had less than average entertainment and the showtimes did not coincide with the dining. 2nd Dinner seating was at 7:45 and the last show was at 9:00. The staff was so slow that we had to skip dessert in order to see a show. There were two bands and a dueling piano bar. Nothing available after their last sets at 11 pm. I always felt like the staff was doing me a favor by doing their jobs. I will stick with Royal Caribbean or Carnival for guaranteed fun and better service. Holland America is not for me. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary. I paid for a larger balcony cabin mid-ship on the 8th deck (bump-out cabin). The air conditioning,(AC), did not work in our cabin. Guest services sent a technician to try and fix the problem. After several attempts they decided to move us to a different cabin. Instead of upgrading us they gave us a cabin on the 7th deck in the aft or rear of the ship. The cabin was smaller with a much smaller balcony. They offered us a $100.00 compensation. The difference in price between the 2 cabins was $660.00. Not to mention the inconvenience of having to change cabins. The Koningsdam is a beautiful ship, however, it had numerous problems on our cruise. The toilets in the bathrooms were not flushing properly so there was a sewer odor all over the ship. The AC in the common areas was not working. Many passengers were complaining of the heat on board. The special effects/lighting for the MAIN STAGE entertainment did not work until several days into the cruise. They had issues with doors opening and closing. I spoke with a crew member several days into the cruise who informed me that the ship had just returned from dry dock. I said to him you would think that after dry dock everything would be in tip top shape. He told me that the dry dock was cut short. He said the ship was suppose to be in dry dock for 21 days, however, someone order the dry dock to end after only 8 days. They were told to work out the bugs while at sea. That told me a lot about how Holland America values it's passengers. They don't! Their customer service does not exist. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise for the ports and age demographic. We are mid 50’s and although not ready for retirement we are past the “party animal” stage. We were looking for something in between. The first couple of days were lovely and no complaints, other than the boring and run of the mill food in the Lido buffet and meh food in the MDR. But after 3 days at sea, we developed severe gastrointestinal issues that plagued us for our entire 10 day voyage. Despite our religious hand washing I might add. The hand washing sinks with the little warm sprayers were awesome, so we used them constantly. If you are looking for a cruise with great entertainment, this is not the cruise for you. B.B. Kings was ok, if you could find a seat, Billboard was the same thing over and over, the music trivia contests seemed to be a vehicle for the host to showcase his “singing” and the comedy show in the main theater was definitely not funny. The food in the MDR was good, not great and not horrible. Although our waiter and his assistant were wonderfully friendly, the language barrier was a problem as many things that we ordered either were not delivered or they were wrong. Hardly any refills on beverages until we had to make eye contact and nod them over. On the 8th day, my husband ( who is never sick I might add ) came down with horrible food poisoning that kept him in bed for the last 2 days of our voyage. I attribute it to the raw pork I had to take away from him at lunch at the Lido. Believe me, sitting at the Ft. Lauderdale airport with food poisoning is not fun-for anyone! I could have forgiven ALL of these things were it not for the fact that we purchased the $25 pp priority baggage service so that our luggage would be taken from our state room the night before disembarking and sent to the airport, so that we would not have to drag around our luggage prior to our flight back home, and not only did my luggage not make it to the airport I did not receive my luggage from Holland America until I had to call them and track it down At the port. Holland America then Sent it me via Fed Ex and I received it 4 days after we arrived home. Missing We’re two of my bras our brand new beats headphones and my Michael Kors diamond necklace. Also, my luggage was broken as the handle was jammed into the actual luggage and would not extend anymore . I promptly called Holland America and was directed to file a claim with their property loss department which I immediately did . I was subsequently informed by Holland America they didn’t feel that they are liable for the loss and directed me to file a claim with FedEx . Fed ex then informed me that they were not liable and I shed again file a claim with Holland America which I again did. After several emails and phone calls I spoke with a Jocelyn who assured me that yes Holland America was liable and would reimburse me, but I then received an email the next day telling me that after further review they decided not to reimburse me but out of the goodness of their hearts and a gesture of goodwill they would offer me a $400 shipboard credit for my next voyage . Sadly that $400 shipboard credit is going to go to waste because I will never patronize Holland America cruise lines ever again and as a matter of fact the group that I travel with has just booked our cruise for March 2019 on a competitors cruise line. For clarification - our cruise departed Ft. Lauderdale on 3/18 as a 10-day Southern Caribbean cruise and was actually the first leg of the 24-day cruise. We disembarked after the 10 days and did not continue on to Rome. We picked this cruise, in large part for the itinerary (Holland America/Carnival’s private island in the Bahamas, Grand Turk, Dominican Republic, Bonaire, Curacao and Aruba). were spectacular and were every bit as amazing and beautiful as we expected. Our poor customer service experience with Holland America began well before we ever got anywhere near the ship. We booked a full ocean-view veranda room. Roughly 2 weeks before our sail date, we received an email offering us an upgrade to a full ocean-view veranda room for a nominal sum (roughly $99 I think). I immediately called. The first person with whom I spoke was unpleasant at best. Needless to say, there was no upgrade available to a full ocean-view room since that's what we already had booked. It took another call and an eventual request to speak with a supervisor to confirm that we were in fact already booked for a full ocean-view room. It took another phone call on a separate day with a lengthy hold time to straighten out our transfer (they had the wrong airport listed on our documents even though they promised us on the phone that everything was correct in the system). I'm still not sure it was ever corrected but we were able to board the bus at the airport. In retrospect, I wish that were not the case. The treatment that we endured onboard for 10 days was horrendous. Over and over and over for the duration of our cruise, we dealt with blatant mistreatment. This was at the hands of the employees of the ship, from the lowest level staff in the dining areas all the way up to literally the ship’s captain. I can assume only that they were offended by an openly gay couple. Rather than bore you with the details of everything that we went through, I will give a couple of examples that illustrate what we experienced and how it impacted our trip. In the informal dining area (buffet style), you go through and get your food and then sit at any open table. The workers come through with pitchers of water, iced tea, etc. Almost without fail, we would watch as they would go to the tables all around us and bypass us. It became a running joke about which of us was going to go and get our drinks for the meal. On the 8 nights that we chose not to eat in the formal dining room (a whole other ordeal unto itself), we almost always chose to have food delivered to our room (from a very minimal menu) because it was simply less agonizing than going to the dining room. On the next to last full day of the cruise, there was an event called “Meet the Captain” (or something similar). I am keeping track of my personal nautical miles, and wanted to find out how many we would be covering on the cruise so we decided to go. The first part was a canned presentation. There was a short “ask the captain” portion at the end, where the audience could ask questions. Following that, a line formed to talk to the captain as well as the “hotel director” of the ship. After waiting in line for quite some time, I eventually got to the very front of the line for the captain. I was no more than 2 feet away from Captain Darrin Bowland. He didn’t look at me, acknowledge me, or speak to me. Instead, he had a conversation over my head with the man in line behind me. At first I thought that the man was perhaps one of the frequent cruisers and therefore knew the captain. Unfortunately, when they had finished their conversation, Captain Bowland continued not to acknowledge my presence and instead had another conversation with the next guest behind me. When this happened for the third time, I gave up. That really was the last straw for me. After 8+ days of being made to feel like second class citizens, to be so blatantly disrespected by the captain was infuriating, degrading and humiliating. If I could have gotten off the ship that day, I would have. Unfortunately, we were somewhere (I think) off the coast of Cuba so I had no options. Prior to getting on the ship, at the cruise terminal in Ft. Lauderdale, for some inexplicable reason, they had quite a large portion of the terminal blocked off. This led to several hundred people crammed into roughly 60% or so of a large room while we waited for them to begin calling our boarding groups. There were a LOT of chairs in the portion that was blocked off, while meanwhile literally dozens of people had to stand around for quite some time (from the time we arrived at the terminal until they even began calling the very first boarding group, there was a wait time of at least 45-60 minutes). There were many elderly and physically handicapped people waiting in the room. We went to one of the HAL personnel standing at the stanchions blocking off the section and were specifically told we could NOT sit on the other side of the room. Aside from that, once our boarding group was finally called and we were able to board the ship, we were able to go right to our state room even though it was before the time they said the rooms would be ready. Once we returned home (literally the day we got home), we got a survey from HAL. We answered it honestly. My other half received a very generic "we're sorry to hear about your bad experience but we have a no discrimination policy and treat everyone equally and fairly" email. I never heard back from anyone at all. I think it's pretty clear that I won't. Now for the good stuff. The ship, which is pretty new (2016? I think), was clean and obviously well-maintained. The room was smaller than some other ships we have been on and the bed was more uncomfortable than expected, but there were movies and TV shows (and some VERY limited music that no one born after 1910 has ever heard) that was available on demand. The bathrooms in the staterooms were very nice. The itinerary was great. The islands we went to were everything we expected and hoped for. We enjoy snorkeling, and found Bonaire, Aruba and Grand Turk (Bonaire in particular) to be amazing. The waterfall excursion (Damajaguas) in the Dominican Republic was one of the more unique experiences I have ever had and really enjoyed it. The gym onboard was comparable to other ships we've been on in terms of size, equipment and class offerings. There was a spin class available for $20. This seemed a little high to me, so we did not do that. Equipment was well-maintained and hours were good for the gym. There were a decent number of live entertainment options each night - a variety of types of shows in the main theater such as comedians, singing/dancing shows featuring the onboard talent etc. Pretty much what we expected there. In other areas of the ship, there was a blues-type band, a string quartet and live piano players that sang most nights. There was only one night where smoking was not allowed in the casino. There were several stores on board, selling jewelry, high-end watches, perfume and some other lower-priced items. With the exception of trivia, I found there were very few other options for entertainment, particularly if you weren't willing to pay to do things. The food was good, and there were plenty of options regardless of whether you were a picky eater, preferred a certain type of food or wanted to eat at a specific time of day. Food was available 24 hours a day, although options were limited during certain times of the day. Room service, while very limited as to the options, was completely free (no gratuity added as I have seen on some other lines for example). There was a mini fridge in the room, but you couldn't use it to store anything as HAL stocked booze etc that you could purchase. You can bring alcohol on, I think it was on 750-ml bottle of wine per person. The HAL literature says any bottles in excess of that are subject to an $18/bottle fee, although we didn't run into that issue. I think it's obvious that I will never again patronize HAL. This experience left such a bad taste in my mouth that not only will we never again set foot on a "dam" ship (Holland America's boats' names all end in "dam" - Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam etc) again - we won't even consider Carnival since they're owned by the same parent company. We were on the Regal Princess and winter in Ma is cold so deceided to stay and jump to this new ship for an extra 10 days. We couldn't get off fast enough. It felt really crowded at all times with Nothing to do. I really don't know what cruise director on this ship did but I want her job. To get food in Lido get in line for eggs or omlets...they serve you at all the station so you wait in line at all these stations. Get eggs go to another station for Toast, now eggs get cold, ask for butter get dirty look and wait some more. Dining room same thing, went at 5:00 and was happy if we got our main course by 6:15. Didn't bother with dessert or second cup of coffee as it would have been 7:30 by time we received. They had to have 3 shows as the theatre is so small. 7:00 8:30 and 10:00 but other than that the only other thing to do was go to another smaller lounge and listen to music...good luck finding a seat. Went swimming in aft pool, husband kept sayng it was filled with algae as it was green and I said no- painted green. 6th day on board they cleaned the pool and it was blue....yuk and hope I don't get anything. Took a tour in St Kitts as I wanted to see the lighthouse booked through ship...big mistake paid $59, got in small van crowded as they used the jump seats (Pulled down seats - lower where you can't really see too good) and then the microphone didn't work...filed with static. Driver kept apologizing and finally gave up talking. saw heard nothing. Took us to stop to buy things for 30 minutes, then to Lighthouse for 15 Minutes but if you wanted to go inside gate to see lighthouse up close pay $3.00 but can't go in Light house? Next off to ocean but never heard about salt as he couldn't talk loud enough. Complained and told in "Good Faith" they were refunding 25% off tour. Could have taken a taxi with driver for probably $20 for both. Screwed up luggage and boarding pass tags...gave me man in next door cabin boarding pass, but never printed my husband's...blamed airline! My idea of Holland America Kongsdam is a nursing home with people who eat, sleep and waiting to die! Sad part is my husband is 76 and I am 71 so not like we are young but we certainly were borded. No Library or game room on board either. Been on over 90 cruises and this was the worst....just booked another one on Princess! Enrichment was all on Windows 10 ...really? Read Less

We have been on other cruise lines and will return to them. HAL. Had certainly lost its reputation of being a great cruise line . It is now just a cheap place for the elderly to spend the winter. We met a lot of people who lived in Florida and got such a reduced rate that they just could not pass up the bargin. We have sailed with them before and have never had such problems. Went on this ship from Ft Lauderdale, December 27th 2017. We chose this ship because the dates fit for our family. The ship was very clean and looked very impressive. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. The staff at the excursion desk were wonderful. The food on board in the restaurant was on par with Carnival, plain, boring and cold, we expected more from a new ship that was boasting about their cuisine. The lido buffet was ok, but it wasn't self service, the staff put the food you point at on your plate and unfortunately that takes time, so the lines are long, you definitely will not gain any weight on this ship. After about 4 days into our trip the salad bar had run out of beets, bacon bits, and various other items. The deserts in the buffet were flavourless and only about 5 varieties were on offer. The entertainment was short and boring, the only place that had anything going for it was Billboard, the piano bar. The ship hosted a pub crawl and one evening whilst we were in Billboard the entertainers had to stop their show because of the leader who was yelling into a mega phone telling them to chug chug chug. The show resumed after they had left but the entertainers were not happy. One of our ports of call was Cozumel, the ship docked at Puerto Maya which is about 5 miles away from the old town, this cost us $10 plus tip each way to get to the market area. After saving for a year to take this vacation we were very disappointed, I doubt we will cruise this ship or cruise line again. Read Less

This was our fifth cruise on Holland this year but our first time on Koningsdam. I am still in utter disbelief how they could screw up this new ship so much. Our cruise was a complete trainwreck from start to finish. Ten days of barely a day without some sort of debacle. Let's start with the good. The cabins are very nice and I will say the bathrooms have a huge improvement over the old ships. One downside is the balcony rooms no longer have bathtubs. The ship is new and very very clean! Our room attendants were wonderful. First off the ship is poorly laid out and no matter where you go you feel cramped in tiny hallways and restaurants that are too small for the size of the ship. This is the first Holland ship we have ever gone on that had a line for the dining room every time no matter what time you went. The service was spotty. A real hit or miss. The food was definitely not nearly as good as other Holland ships and was always cold!!! Specialty dining couldn't have been worse. The Tamarind took 2 hours for dinner and we left before dessert. The waitress was slow and the food made PF changs look good. Cold, bland, uncreative and the list goes on. The Canalletto was the worst dining experience I have had in years. We couldn't have felt less welcome. Our waitress was rude, we didn't even receive bread for 20 minutes and 30 minutes between course, all of which were disgusting. They never filled our water glasses, cleared plates. Bottom line we walked out and nobdoby cared. Bottom line is this ship puts a tarnish on Hollands reputation. It is an embarrassment to their name and the cruise line we have grown to love. If you are going on Holland go on other ships but not Koningsdam. We would never step foot on that ship again even it if was free. My complaints to corporate about our experience have gone completely unanswered which doesnt sit well. Read Less

The positives: the food is fine. We all lived. We enjoyed the ports (though we didn't book any HAL excursions.) The room was clean (except for the open peanut butter cup we found under my peanut allergic kid's bed). The negatives: If you board a ship on November 29 that goes until December 10, there will not be a single holiday decoration on the boat. When 2 people asked about it at the Captain's Q&A, the Captain said to a kid, "we put up our tree on Christmas Eve, and Santa still comes." So rude! To a kid! If you want to get away from holiday festivities, this might be your ship. The Club HAL staff was not allowed to do any holiday activities with the kids even though it was December. St Nicholas Day came and went without a single decoration. The boat was consistently late. "We'll be pulling in at 6 am," the captain would say, and then we'd be off the boat at 9 instead of 8 because we arrived late. Stuff happens, I know, but being consistently late is a pattern of disrespect to its guests. We all have that relative that you have to tell the family reunion starts earlier so she can be on time, and the Koningsdam crew is apparently like that. The people who occupied our room before us apparently claimed that it was too cold, so the crew had turned off the air conditioning to the room. It was 85-90 in our room, we're dripping with sweat and not sleeping, the cabin steward reported it, we reported it, and it took them 15 hours to get someone to respond and fix it. If you thrive on being ignored, this might be your ship! There was no apology offered for their failure to turn the air conditioner back on in a timely manner. This is a new boat, but it does not have unlimited internet like the Westerdam or the Celebrity cruise we took last year. They charge by the minute, and a significant amount of those minutes will be lost to the system crashing or timing out. You are allowed to go and beg for minutes back when it times out, but you will be told you don't know what you're doing and that system crashing is your fault. The crew pays by data usage, which makes more sense because you only pay for the email loaded, not for the 20 minutes it takes you to load your email. The crew told us that no HAL ships offer unlimited internet, so maybe the Westerdam has discontinued their package. The crew told us the ship would have to go to dry dock before it could offer unlimited internet. We are still laughing about that excuse. The crew is incapable of resolving or escalating issues. If you have an issue, you will be met with, "there's nothing we can do" or a blank look. One day my son cut his foot at the pool. We thought it would be like any other establishment and asked for a bandaid. The crew member told us we would have to visit the doctor in the infirmary to procure a bandaid, so I just went to our stuff and got one to avoid a doctor visit for a minor cut. Read Less

Thought this cruise would be great. It was not. Ship is extremely boring and a very sterile environment. Entertainment was poor one, good show for 30 minutes on the hole cruise. Food was bad. Noise in the, cabin so you could not sleep. Whatever you do, pick a different cruise ship and don't get your vacation totally destroyed. This is the worst cruise you can do. You cant pick your own food a person behind a glas shelf hands out the food. The hole cruise is boring. Staff was not fun either. Dutch people that normally is very nice but not on this ship. The was so boring that for a moment you just want to get off the ship and fly back to Miami. Again the Entertainment was poor. No good food was served. All food behind a glas shelf, so you could not pick your food. I was starving when I went off the ship. Read Less

Embarkation was good. Greeted by nice friendly efficient staff. Our stateroom was very nice. It was modern, new and clean. The shower recess is the largest I have ever had on a cruise ship. The toilet is at an angle and my knees jam against the shower glass when sitting down. This is not a complaint, just an observation. The bed was not comfortable as there was a huge hollow in the middle. This was surprising considering the newness of the ship but no doubt caused by people sitting on the bed instead of the very nice couch. TV is great with a good selection of movies. Nice desk and ample wardrobe space. We paid for a balcony with an unobstructed view but we got a good view of the superstructure. To actually see anything we had to go outside and stand at the rail. Sitting on the balcony gave us a good view of the sky. We found the food to be better than most ships we have sailed on but the service in the buffet is a little hit and miss. Ask for bacon and you get one piece of dry rubbish that has to be eaten with the fingers and it shatters on impact. There was some English style bacon but it was always undercooked. Most of the other food was okay. The entertainment on the ship is very poor. The theatre shows were okay at times but other than that there was a screeching band in BB King's, a bit of classical music and a piano player that played for a short while. General trivia and music trivia very poor. The service desk staff and the rest of the crew were all very nice and helpful. Our stateroom was deck 4, starboard, forward. The constant clouds of cigarette smoke in the passageway was unbearable. I suffer from a congenital lung disorder and my wife suffers chronic bronchitis. We were looking forward to a cruise in the fresh air of Norway. That was totally ruined on board. We both wore masks in the passageway. We had to be very quick entering our stateroom so as to minimize the smoke that we dragged in. This was all because there is a crew smoking area at the end of our passageway at the front of the ship. All the smoke blows in through our passageway. There is a constant parade of crew marching down our passageway to smoke and whilst in port we could not sit on the balcony because of the cigarette smoke. At times the smoke in the hallway was so thick it even came under the door. It got so bad in our room at times that I demanded something be done about it and fans were put in the passageway. Sort of like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. Why on earth a smoking area is put in an area where the smoke can blow back through the ship is beyond me. Even the smoke from the casino wafts through the other areas of the ship and it's very difficult to find somewhere healthy to relax. This was to be the cruise of a life time and coming from Australia, it cost us a lot of money only to have it ruined by the unhealthy habits of others, and poor planning by HAL. Read Less

Looked forward to playing duplicate bridge on the crossing. No such thing. So I went to the library to find something to read. No such library. Turns out this is just another Carnival ship in disguise. Very few lectures. The hot tubs were nothing more that warm tubs everywhere on the ship. I actually got cold in two of them. The world stage was very entertaining and spectacular. However, when the show was over, you were forced to walk through the smoke filled casino, weaving through the heavy smoke screen. Poor design (actually, it was designed to make more money forcing people into the casino). The tender operations were third world. On one tender operation our driver circled the ship three times because he did not know how to dock it with another tender there. Each of the specialty restrurants cost around $40 per person per meal. It seems this ship was designed to make money at all costs, and to hell with the guests and their desires. Read Less

of 26 cruises this was the worst entertainment, activities and lack of such made this the worst of worst. Food was the one good thing, The ship caters to the very elderly which is fine but the lack of activities especially around th pool is ridiculous on any cruise. the shows were the worst I have ever seen and the overall experience was as though the line were trying to save money The OJ in the morning and cranberry juice were watered down and I dont drink so I cant speak for the alcohol We were forced to get off the ship at mid point of two week cruise and go through customs because we missed the ship and met it in San Juan...They took us off at 8 and held us until 1100 without telling us the details and we were not told to bring medicine or eat. My wife is on insulin and it took 2 hours for them to bring it with rolls and coffee. Why couldnt we be processed on board like the many other passengers who took back to back cruises????? Read Less

We were told this was a new ship, nice decor, good for dancing. What a disappointment this has been! We sailed from JAN 8-22 and paid well over 5 figures. This was the worst and most uninteresting, boring cruise we had ever been on. First of all the management seemed disorganized from start to finish. We would be sent to events that did not exist. Upon embarkation, 3 pieces of luggage arrived and we had to wait anxiously for the missing 4th bag. Soup would arrive by room service without a spoon. The meals served in the Dining Room were terrible: we took 10 meals in specialty dining (Tamarind was good). Entertainment was non-existent. The performances in Lincoln Centre and Bill board were sub-par. The "shows" in the World Stage were hardly worth going to. The quality just was not there. The BB King band played the same beat, same sound, every night from 8PM and 11PM: how many "swings" can you dance to? Guests pleaded with the band and DJ to play some rumba, waltz, fox trot, samba: they just would not listen. We got 2 x 45 minutes "tea dances" in 14 days: that was all we got. There were also some "secret dances" arranged by certain guests that the rest of the guests were not allowed into: a lot of "secrecy" that we had never seen before. The younger guests complained they had nothing to do after 11PM, and the "older" guests also found themselves bored to tears. We really wanted to leave the ship after 7 nights: but we had paid a lot and they would not offer a partial refund. It did not help that the ship is smaller than many modern vessels, and the ship rocked severely the first week. Quite a few guests got sea-sick when the seas were rough. WIFI was more expensive than most ships but it worked well. Room attendants were good: that and the complementary laundry and dry-cleaning were probably the best part. Read Less

The ship is not cleanness. The bathroom in the stateroom had mildew. In the pool are had mildew too. The pool chairs was terrible dirty. The cruise director was not professional is the bad cruise director I meet with other cruise directors in holland america. The food is not good in main dinning room. I preferred Eurodam. The only billboard bar crew was made a extraordinary job and exceptional job (Dhianne, Ryan, Baylon, Kimberly and Mark)With a personalized service for each Guests. The Housekeeping officer is not a professional person. If I compared the B&B Kings with Eurodam, Westerdam and Rotterdam, the konigsdam B&B kings need to improved a lot. The cruise director never meet with guests only with his couple, also working in the same department so conflict of interest. The entertainment very poor if you compared with other holland america ships. The entertainment officer was not professional with the guests. She only talk with her friends and I you did a complaint she are not willing to listen your comments. Read Less

Just returned from our 7 day cruise on the Ms. Konnigsdam from Dec23- Dec 30th. I was looking forward to this vacation as I was going with my mom, and we live in separate cities. Here is my honest opinion of the ship. Positives: Physically, the ship is grand and reminds me of Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby movie. Ports were amazing ! The rooms are super large and spacious for two people. The cruise is super clean and there is places to wash your hands all over the boat. The BB King band is super talented! High tea everyday at 3:15 pm, was amazing. Negatives: From the second we entered the ship on Dec 23rd it was an utter disaster. It was my birthday and I was told we were entitled to a Welcome Drink, which I never received. The steward neglected to provide soap in our cabin and our shower cap looked like it was open. To make matters worse, the phone in our room did not work. I walked up to the front desk where the staff assured me that this would be attended to. I come back from the pool and there still is no soap, so at this point I am about to loose it. Finally, the steward brings us the soap. Then I make my way to the buffet, where I was instructed that there was only 1 restaurant open at the time. I was disgusted by what I saw, the food looked gross and soggy. The whole time, I was made to feel like cattle, as I was always instructed to wait in line. To get off the ship to see ports, there were lines and not enough employees to scan keycards and search ID. The waiting in line for food at the Lido Market buffet was such a pain. o make matters worse, food was rationed. I have never been on a cruise where you cannot serve yourself, the servers serve you in the buffet. To some this may appear to be classy but to me, I was insulted as this was obvious it was to save money. I stopped attending the buffet, because my food was always cold from waiting in line. Since I was traveling with a diabetic, so my travel agent made arrangements and contacted Holland America personally to express our concerns regarding meal times and fridge for medications. The fridge in the stateroom was not cold enough for a vile. Therefore, we went to the medical center to see if we could store the vile, in there fridge. When we arrived at the medical center, a nurse told us that the regular fridge had not been in working order for 2 months. As a lawyer, I find this shocking and utterly irresponsible. I said to the nurse how is this possible, this is a liability. Clearly, after I said that she made room in the staff fridge for the vile. To make matters worse, we made previous arrangements to have a our dinner at the dinning hall at 7 pm every-night. That evening, when I arrived on my Birthday, I was told we had no reservations and it was our responsibility to make them on board ship when we arrived. So at this point, I lost it and said no its my birthday and we did make reservations and based on your miscommunication and disorganization you screwed up and likely forgot about us. Eventually, they sat us and every evening after this episode, we ate at the Dinning Hall for dinner at the food was excellent. However, if one wants to eat the dinning hall for breakfast the hours are from 730 am- 9am. If one wants to sleep in they need to eat at the Lido buffet, which was gross. I have never been on a cruise where there was no midnight buffet and the hours of eating in the dinning hall were odd, for example: 730 am-9am and lunch it was rarely opened. I was sold a pack of lies when I heard that this cruise ship is upscale. There is nothing upscale about waiting and waiting in a line. On the 5th day, we lost total communication, which was super scary. For 48 hours we were out of contact with the rest of the world and unable to communicate with guest services via telephone line, as all forms of communication were down. This was utterly ridiculous and needs to be shared. The ship was also filled with elderly people and others with medical conditions. This type of situation should not occur. I felt that they were constantly trying to penny and dime me on everything. For example, I wanted to pay bingo one evening and when I wait in line for 20 minutes I am instructed, there is a cost to pay. Now for my steward due to him not providing itinerary at the appropriate times, I showed up to a gala evening completely under-dressed. I was always felt there was a lack of communication, I was always unaware of what was happening due to him not providing the appropriate itinerary on time. He also ignored me when I saw him in the hall. It was only when I was with my family that he tended to pay more attention to me. I guess because he thought I looked young, he didnt think he would get tips out of me. A lot of the staff seemed very sad to be away from there families and it was obvious they did not want to be there. I felt that many of the staff were fake and constantly wanted tips. However, they did try there best but many, lacked proper training. Many did not speak english properly and it was difficult to understand them. The nightly entertainment shows at the World Stage was a joke. Having previously cruised with Celebrity and the Disney where the entertainment was amazing, the Konigsdam really lacked in this area. I will never take another Cruise with Holland America and I know others on the cruise experienced similar situations. Also, on the last day in the Bahamas, we were eating lunch and grabbed a burger, which was raw. Please avoid and take a Celebrity Cruise ! Read Less

Holland America – Cruise on KONINGSDAM Dec 22nd to Dec 30th 2016 I have been very busy building a house for five years, (-yes doing it myself) and I had not managed a holiday for five years. So I finally decided that I deserved one and booked the above cruise. My very first cruise experience was on the HA Westerdam and Christmas and it was MAGIC. There was plenty of room in the aisles around food counters, there are were four course set meals, Christmas decorations everywhere, and a good deal of elegantly dressed people at formal dinners. It was elegant and comfortable and – I thought- great value. I remember that there a great many choices of juice at breakfast including – if memory serves me- Prune Juice! Well that’s how it used to be. We took this cruise recently to see how much had changed and we expected some. But KONINGSDAM got Carnivalized and Cannibalized. The customer does not matter anymore. And here in bullets is just how awful it now is: • If you are going to build new ships you should have the skills to do so: putting a giant disco on the center of a floor with rooms directly above/around it is a ridiculous design. The disco was way over-amplified for sound and one evening we heard the DJ encouraging the guests to scream in unison. The floors of my room and the glass in my shower vibrated with the bass rhythms. I took this vacation for a REST! I complained bitterly. They made NO adjustment and one evening ran the disco until 2 am. My husband walked around the fourth floor (don’t book a room on the FOURTH FLOOR EVER) and estimated that at least 20 rooms would be affected. They will keep the disco running while there is ANYBODY to buy alcohol. It’s ALL about $$$. • The buffet restaurant is no longer about assisting customers to get fed conveniently. Most food is now behind windows and you have to wait to be served. This makes for huge congestion and long lines. It’s all about making sure you do not take too much as you can NO LONGER get a tray. So as well as dodging large crowds you can only carry one plate and go back for whatever you want to drink or a dessert or pretty much anything later. It’s ALL about $$$. One kudos goes to the fresh flowers on the main dining room tables and most of the proteins they serve. The desserts have a good many well known names but do not conform to the standards. For instance you cannot slop custard and a sprinkle of sugar into a dish and call it a Grand Marnier Crème Brulee. Nor can you stick a bit of sponge into a wedge of mousse with no alcholol at all and call it Tiramisu. Fortunately I was avoiding desserts. • The Westerdam on our first trip was elegant when we had “Formal nights” Most wore tuxes and almost all the women had long gowns. On this trip we saw a Hawaiian shirt in the service dining room on formal night and many short cocktail dresses. If you enjoy the dress up aspect on this ship you may find yourself standing out as I did. • On this trip they told us that the Christmas decorations were late. There were two small bauble wreaths on the customer service desk, some giant baubles around the pool, and a tree of boxes at Center ship. Christmas comes but once a year and you HAL dudes were late for it? I personally did not buy that. There were no specific decorations in dining rooms at Christmas I remembered fondly white covered chairs and table dressings on my first trip. • They don’t play movies in the theater; they play them on screen at the end of the pool and you have to watch them on lounging chairs—this has the effect of limiting the size of the audience and you can NOT hear the bally dialogue because of the noisy drunks at all the bars in close proximity. The giant baubles prevented would-be viewers from seeing the whole screen.. Great planning HAL! • We choose HAL because we expect the age of the passengers to be on the mature side. This cruise had a good many teenagers who raced and chattered in hallways and on verandahs loudly with no thought for anyone but themselves. • The insulation between rooms appears to be non-existent; we could hear several TV’s around us until the small hours of the morning. • A presentation to improve your health was solely a marketing idea for some supplement. Needless to say I complained about the severe lack of sleep and when the “let’s book your next vacation with us” paperwork arrived, I scrawled “over my dead body” all over it and “you’ve got to be kidding!” They gave me a credit of $200 dollars and a free meal in one of their “specialty” restaurants. We checked the menu at said specialty restaurant and walked out at the utter lack of any item on the menu which might even whet our appetites. By the way I suggested that they reserve the fourth floor noise-affected rooms for specifically the younger folk who wanted to patronize the disco. You would have thought that this was a Nobel prize- winning suggestion from their reaction – “oh what a great idea!” I am quite sure that instead they struggle with complaints every dam (sic) week and fob guests off with miserable sums to compensate. After five years waiting for a great holiday do they think that a small sum of cash is going to offset $4000 going down the drain and no opportunities to make up for that? I fear that much of what I encountered may now be common place. I took cruises because it enabled me to get a glimpse of far flung places without lugging a suitcase behind me all the time. However I’ll rough it from now on just to get some sleep. Combine all this with a diabolical journey (my first and last) on Virgin and what I got was the vacation from HELL! Read Less

This is our 25th cruise. We have cruised in the past with Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Carnival and Holland. We took this cruise because of our previous positive experiences on the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. We were also interested in the Music Walk venue and the ports of call. My wife and I are a young 60 something and enjoy a balance of relaxation and fun activities. We will try to be fair with this review, however, if you are young at heart and want to have an exciting time on your cruise, you best look elsewhere. This was the longest 21 days we ever spent on a cruise and could not wait to get off the ship! Usually, we want more days and are sad when it is time to go home. This was not the case with the Koningsdam. The Music Walk is a good idea that has failed miserable. Why? The schedule is all wrong for the time of year. You have to wait till 9:15PM before the only fun event starts. This was the BB King Blues Club. The band was great and was not appreciated by the majority of the older people on board. We are talking -OLD! And lots of wheel chairs and handicap scooters. And Rude! OMG! I have nothing against this demographic and we will all be there someday but the environment was very depressing and the "spirit" was sad and heavy. This is not what we want on our vacation. BORING! best describes this cruise ship. The decor is understated and lacks any character. The design of the ship is flawed in many ways. The lack of air and an open feeling cannot be dismissed. Stuffy and hot with no fresh air movement. It is no wonder why half the ship was sick with the flu. The deck layouts are confusing. The cabins are much smaller than other Hal ships. The once great Promenade deck has been ruined by the new lifeboat design. There are zero chairs on this outside deck and the lifeboats are positioned in such a way that experiencing the sea is gone. So, if you love the Promenade deck experience on other HAL ships, please know that it is not going to happen on the Koningsdam. This new design will unfortunately be the new norm for all their new ships. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT AND DEAL BREAKER for us. We think HAL needs to limit the number of scooters allowed on board for safety reasons. Several times my feet were almost run over by rude, scooter travelers. The public areas are too congested and the walkways too narrow for the vast number of handicap vehicles on board. The Daily Planner was a joke. Nothing at all to do is an understatement. The focus was on up selling by pushy, rude specialty shop and spa personnel. The Cruise Director was doing just the bare minimum and made it very obvious that he hated his job. The grease fire that broke out in the Hamburger area was the most excitement we had in 21 days. We were in bed and comfortably watching a movie in the cabin when the announced came over the loud speaker declaring the fire onboard! The fire was quickly put out without any further issues except for a few rattled nerves! Now for the positives. The food was excellent in all areas including the: Tamarind, Pinacle Grill, Lido Market, Main Dining Room and The Pizza and Hamburger stands. The servers were very polite and mostly happy. Kudos to Reggie at the Pizza Bar for always giving service with a smile. To Ming, William and Anita for their great service and attitudes while serving us in the Lido and Tamarind. To Margorie at the Front desk for going the extra mile. The BB King Blues Club and band were the highlight of the cruise for us. Thanks to the band members, JP, Mike, April and Cassie for their talent and great PR skills. Thanks to the Captain for a great ship tour. Half Moon Cay was the best port. HAL should consider staying overnight at this port since it is their private island. Out of all the ports and beaches in this 21 day southern Caribbean cruise, Half Moon Cay was the clear winner. In the future we will stick with more exciting ships and/or cruiselines. We may try the Eurodam again in the future. However, if HAL keeps taking away their signature items like the fresh squeezed orange juice, free gelato, etc. ( They think we don't notice) then maybe we are done will HAL. Sad. Read Less

Chose this to experience the new ship and compare it to my other cruises on many Dam ships Found great innovation and excellent additions such as the Queens Lounge amd the extra restaurants and speciallynthe New York Deli and superb service from Reggie ! Nice afternoon teas similar to Cunard, though with only occasionally music and the BBKing at night featured great singers, but the sound was deafening ! Generally the night entertainment based on the open Music Walk was lacking in offering any small zones,,all were overcrowded and none in closed off intimate areas Also, the lack of daytime music or alternate evening venues was really anoying, the Crows Nest is now just a great daytime space, butb unused in the evenings, something really missed Daytime pursuits were mostly money orientated and nothing at all innovative and have no chance of capturing the millenials that HAL hope to attract with the Pinnacle class,it is a truly senior line and seems they havery chosen to create a ship that generally is unliked by their older regular clientele The lack of their iconic library was unbelievable as was the unappealing walking deck and the realy overcrowded feeling, particularly on the Caribbean cruises, not a ship I would sail again Finaly, the AMAZING staff keep me loyal to HAL -,though future cruises will always be on an older and smaller ship- Read Less

I chose this cruise for its destinations. Overall the cruise was OK but there were some issues including the cabin which review follows. The Lido Buffet was always crowded and rarely were both sides open and there was no crossover so you were always hunting for the limited seating. Only two flavors of ice cream! They charge for gelato! What! Some of the servers in the Lido and Dive-In seemed new to the cruising business (maybe because of new ship) and were downright hostile for no reason. I cannot believe that they would argue over how you wanted your burger. My wife and I on one occasion were in the Lido right by the water station and the idiot server would not fill our water glasses up. I had to get up and do it myself. Then when we are finished he comes up and says would you like some water, I say not I got it myself, and then he lips off to me. It is the only time on a cruise ship I have ever swore at some one. Also everyone is trying to sell you something all the time and it just gets annoying. The shore excursions were fine. The room stewards were great (both long time employees). Limited contact with the Neptune Lounge was great. This is the first time I have ever written to complain about a cruise, I am not a whiner, but this ship takes the cake. After 7 cruises on Holland America this is the last. Read Less

First Holland America cruise was Alaska landsea and it is wonderful. This cruise was NOT. No laundry facilities. They give you a tiny bag you fill and they wash/dry for $30.00. Daily Hotel Charges PER person. Could not dock in Italy due to high winds. NO consolation except a free glass of Champagne at dinner. Had a private excursion booked. Lost my money as Get your Guide said too little notice and Holland America only honors tours booked through them. Booked $175.00 Holland America tour "Taste of Sardinia". Tour included food and traditional entertainment at a Villa. At Villa, on way to restroom, glanced out an archway and saw plated food sitting in open, not covered, with flies enjoying the soon to be eaten lunch. A waiter did "wave" his tray as he walked by long tables of food! When advised Front Desk Manager he said he was there and saw plated food sitting outside but no flies, Basically called me and my companion liars. Food on ship good but too salty. Was salt swollen entire trip. Played in Casino last night on ship. Debits your ship card. When I cashed out of a machine I thought my card would be credited...was not. When pulled my ship bill the next morning before leaving ship saw only debits from each machine played. Front desk said credit went to my "Casino" account and I would need to contact Casino when they were open. When home called Casino. No person answers, just voicemail. Said if you have a Casino credit expect a refund within 3 MONTHS! Left message and call back information. Never received a call. Disembarking a nightmare, unless you pay Holland America to take you to the airport. We hired a shuttle (much cheaper) and was given 7:00am to leave ship. Many people leaving at same time. Only problem was we were suppose to leave from floor A. Elevators would not go to bottom floor A. We ALL were dragging our luggages down stairs to floor A. What a nightmare! Only good thing was the Wait Staff. They were great! And, the ship is beautiful. All in all, negatives outway positives so will never cruise Holland America again Read Less
