Having sailed on this ship some 18mths ago we were surprised at how some parts of the cabins had deteriorated in particular 5022 Last year we could not fault them after all this was a comparatively new ship but has gone downhill since The shower recess had mould. Now it would not take much to remove it but in the 21days it was not. Our steward was lovely but they are pushed to the limits so cleaning mould was not part of his cleaning schedule. Our friends shower was the same..yet other people we spoke to said they had no issues. The doona was marked as to was the lounge, the TV did not work nor did the phone for a day or two, which meant we were missing any bridge communications. The common areas were still maintained to a standard. The dining room menu was varied & most of the meals very good. Lido is still the usual scrum and finding a table at peak times is like winning the lottery as it is on most cruise lines which is why we opt for the dining room for breakfast & dinner. Wine list on this cruise was not to a standard with a very nice wine only available in the dining room. Why all bars did not offer this was beyond us. Most wine by the glass $11USD + gratuity which should be at the discretion of each guest not automatically added but the drinks waiters we most times well deserved of it anyway Entertainment on HAL ships is below par. Guests were walking out during performances Shore Excursions: Mostly very good & at times well organised just more info prior would be helpful. If anyone gets a chance to go to Monaco and they offer a cruise to EZE DO IT!!! This old fortress & village was amazing, just be prepared for some uphill climbing but so worth it. TIP: If you do not do a ships shore excursion but still wish to go out & about HIRE a taxi. Talk to them re a price & length of time you wish to spend out & about. We did this a couple of times & so worth it. Embarkation & disembarkation was smooth & effortless. We actually embarked earlier than allotted as it was a back to back As with most cruises you met some wonderful people (we met mostly Aussies) shared some great experiences & were attended by some great staff. We upgraded on HAL Mediterranean cruise, to include the services of a concierge. It was very poor value for money. The quality of the food was very poor - numerous errors in the menu. The kitchen staff are better than the passengers!! Couldn’t reach the customer service after being on hold for 10 mins - simply disconnected. The concierge service was only avail till 8pm then just no response. The Neptune lounge was in the interior of the boat no view of the water. The concierges main goal was to know our names but beyond that couldn’t offer anything additional! Very disappointed in our upgrade... really didn’t see any value for money, no significant improvement in cabin, service, or assistance from concierge. Nightly entertainment shows were poor as were the choice of movies. For a “newer” ship no real wow factor. Limited photo ops. Dining room service was also very slow until we spoke to several staff members. Read Less

We had previously done a cruise with HA in 2015 and it was amazing. We thought we would receive the same service this time when we chose a 23 day Mediterranean Cruise. The good points; Amazing staff and so happy to greet you each day Great ship, reasonably clean Great Captain Some entertainment was ok but repeated their shows quite often which were the same Great selection of food at the Lido Really well organised embarkation and disembarkation Well organised shore excursions The bad points; Our second trip did give us a $150 credit but talking to new comers they were given more eg a cheap drinks package and a free meal at the Pinnacle etc No water in cabin, no fruit Our biggest gripe is 15% surcharge on WATER, really, 6 one litre bottles cost us $24 plus the surcharge which amounted to around $27 American dollars. In Australian dollars around $42. That is disgusting. 15%surcharge on all drinks, I can understand in a dining room or being waited on but when you buy your own, disgraceful. We were 55minutes outside Spain and I was charged 15% surcharge on a drink that I purchased then another 15% Spain surcharge so that glass of wine cost $26 American dollars Wine waiters trying to sell alcohol constantly The dining room food was very ordinary and the desserts were awful. We walked by ? the Lido and the same desserts were being served there. Really. The Pinnacle was a let down, it has dropped its standard of high quality. I had previously told friends and recommended this Dining Room The excursions were quite expensive and a couple were not worth the time or the money. HA need to clarify their rules on bringing alcohol on board. We were told we could bring 2 bottles of wine on board which we did. People next to us tried this and it was confiscated, so clarification is needed. Would I recommend this ship, probably not. I would certainly tell them of our experience and let them decide. Would we use HA again, no, it is all about the money and how much they can take off you. People save hard for a cruise and one hopes for a great time but unfortunately the hidden costs is bitter. We chose this cruise as I had previously used HA for Med cruises and really enjoyed the experience, rated it as the best cruise line I had been on This time was quite different and although the staff are still fantastic the changes to the ship made it impossible to find a quiet place to sit and read or talk The promenade deck was reduced to a very small area with no room for loungers in the shade where you could have a quiet rest looking at the sea and the lifeboats hung in the way so not much view There wasn’t anywhere on the boat we could get away from loud piped pop music and the only loungers were in the full sun There were so many children in the pool area that made it noisy and a very hot place too The adults pool and spa were in a smoking area so smelly and hot! The lunch dining room is not available now and there are no libraries They don’t have the events like they used to and the free drink and nibbles for sail away and last night is no more The shows are not nearly as elaborate although this ship had a great screen background and technical capability for laser shows You are constantly bombarded with requests to buy alcohol if you sit anywhere on the ship The jogging area was really tiny Everything is now designed to make more money We won’t hurry back and will try other lines now Read Less

We have cruised before with Royal Caribbean and we are Platinum members with Princess. We chose HAL for its itinerary. First hand the ship is impressive and user friendly. Both embarkation and disembarkation were flawless. But sail-a-way was ordinary and we missed the hoopla we have had on other cruises. Both pools were very nice and I like the movable roof at the midship pool. The aft pool was also good but I disliked that smoking was allowed here. No matter where you sat, the smell of smoke was present. I also noticed that no pool boys were seen and the cruise wide chair hogs were apparent everywhere with no discipline whatsoever. We saw very little of the onboard entertainment and so cannot comment. But I did note that the cruise director did very little and seemed somewhat of a snob. We booked our own excursions with friends we made on cruise critics and found the onboard excursions pricey for what was offered. When tendered in Santorini, the ship let the pax who had ship excursions off before the rest resulting in our pre-booked excursion being shortened. Not nice HAL. My biggest con is with the onboard dining. The Lido Market was chaotic at best. There were no specific lines and the service staff seemed unaware of what they were serving. I asked for oatmeal but was given a dry cold cereal. Many of the staff in the Lido were also curt & unresponsive to your needs. The main dining room somewhat much better. The courses more pizzazz than taste. The presentation may have competed with 5 star restaurants but the end results left less to the imagination. I'm also confused as to a wine steward who cannot make a wine suggestion. Most couldn't even pronounce the names of wines they served. In fact I brought 2 bottles onboard which I brought to the dining room, the wine steward looked at the bottle and mispronounced it's name; chianti. The assistant waiters also didn't seem to understand basic English. We ate in the Pinnacle Grill which I found ok but not great. I was looking forward to America's Test Kitchen but found our that the space was used by Club Orange, which was never full. I'm not to keen on having to book a suite to try out the fare in that restaurant. All things told, it was an enjoyable cruise. Will we sail with HAL again? Maybe. Read Less

Our last cruise was on a Princess ship, which turned out to be a less than ideal vacation because it appeared that the average age of the passengers was at least 82, or maybe higher. We wanted to avoid that type of crowd, so we decided to try the Koningsdam. The ship itself is not luxurious in any way; there are no interesting or unusual features that are often found on other lines. The atrium itself was especially dull. The food, however, was excellent both at the lido bar and at the two main dining rooms. The variety of food was exceptional at all meals. Other than the dining areas, the only other food offering was at a pizza place and a hamburger place. We would have liked to have more options for food, especially since the hours of operation were not that great at the two places. We went on four excursions, and had mixed results with them. Our main complaint about the excursions was that we were given very little time to stop and take pictures. The professionalism of the tour guides varied considerably. We did find out that at many ports you can hire a taxi to take you to the same sites covered by the excursion, but at a considerably lower cost. Our cabin had a balcony and the room itself was suitable in size and comfort. The folks who cleaned the cabin did a phenomenal job of making sure everything was in order and that the room was perfectly cleaned. We had no issue with the cabin itself. Our main disappointment was with the entertainment and activities. In essence, there really wasn't much to do on the ship. I'm not sure why the staff can't come up with something for the passengers to do. The entertainment was especially disappointing. The same music was played night after night at the various venues. If the ship can't have different groups playing, at least have them play different songs each night. The stage entertainers were OK, but some of them performed the same acts more than one night. The acts included a pianist, a singing group, and a juggler. Not much variety. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary and loved all the port visits especially Kotor, Dubrovnik and Korcula. Embarkation and disembarkation were excellent, efficient and stress free. The two tender ports were also very well organised with no hold ups. Stateroom (4030) was clean and comfortable with great storage options but we travelled with our teenage daughter and found the ergonomics not so good when the pull out bed was made up. (Effectively blocked access to the balcony.) The bathroom is a good size (especially the shower) and very functional. The big negative with the stateroom was the noise level from the theatre productions, unacceptable for a new build vessel. In room entertainment offers a great choice of movies and information. Food overall was very good however the service in the main dining room was inconsistent and actually quite poor at times. The Lido buffet had good options but felt quite crowded at times and there were quite long periods where not much was available when changing between meal sessions. Service always very good in the buffet. My favourite was the Grand Dutch Cafe which offers great coffee, nice snacks (have to try the fries) and excellent service! Entertainment was not to our taste, the feature act was Vox Fortura whose singing voices were good but the show was aimed at a very 'senior' audience. The 'comedian' Chas Burnett was plain awful (had to escape after 10 minutes) The main theatre seemed too small for the number of passengers with many missing out on seats. We liked the music in the Rolling Stone Rock venue and the Blues Club but felt the sessions were cut too short. Overall the ship's public spaces felt to be too smal, I wonder if too much space has gone to pay restaurants and exclusive areas? On the whole she is a nice modern ship with an excellent crew but we felt our previous two cruises on Celebrity Solstice class vessels were far superior. Read Less

Transatlantic Bucket List with ongoing Adriatic ports. Our first cruise on HAL. The ship, staff food and amenities were on par with our other cruises but nothing exceptional. Entertainment on main stage was mediocre but HAL Lincoln Center Venue was exceptional. HAL's other on-board activities were targeted toward keeping the physically inactive mentally alert. Port excursions were both over-priced and crowded. Reminded us of 6th grade school field trips. The most rigorous activity required you climb on and off the big buses. We booked all of our excursions either through ToursbyLocal or directly with the operators. For example, a sailing charter, 40 mile bike trek, another 20 mile bike trek and 6 private tours with private guide and transport at 1/4th cost of what was being offered by HAL. Overall, HAL offers a distinct product to their target market of geriatric passive travelers who value being coddled. We enjoyed our trip and met some more adventurous souls like us but overall impression was we were traveling in a floating assisted living facility Read Less

Had never sailed with HA before (28 cruises) and had done three transatlantic crossings so were ready for another and liked the itinerary continuing on to Croatia. Things started out great as the cabins were ready when we got on the ship around noon. First balcony room was fine but slightly smaller than ones we'd had on other lines. Great TV and wonderful shower. However, whoever designed the bathroom forgot to leave enough leg room in front of commode. We asked for a different room about three days into the cruise due to mechanical noise that was going on directly across the hall from our room. We did get moved after 13 nights and had nice, quiet sleeping for the last nine days. Don't know how they justify putting any passenger that has paid for a veranda room within range of that constant noise. Dining was fine in main dining room. Menu was varied and our service was good at the early seating. We use the buffet as little as possible, but found the food selection O.K. but hated the lines that were caused by the fact that there were very few things you could serve yourself. Annoying! The french fries at the Dive In near the pool were great and the burgers were fine also. Need to send the food service staff of HA a bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, however, as they certainly don't know how to make the real stuff. The entertainment in the World Stage left a lot to be desired. Too many comedians who weren't that good and the need to arrive 30 minutes or more ahead of time to guarantee a seat. The string quartet in another venue was very talented, but performed more often than needed. Have no comments about the ship excursions as we always plan our own private groups or join others that have done so and did three on this cruise. We also used the HOHO buses in Malaga and Cartagena and Kotor. Read Less

The crew from the Captain from Canada , who was informative in the Q and A session, the cruise director, Nathan from Texas, who was the CD on the Oosterdam and remembered us as we boarded the ship ,to the assistant director, Ines, from Portugal is what made this Trip so much fun. We enjoyed Lincoln Center Stage, played Pickleball, played trivia, where we met friends that we played trivia with the whole cruise .We did morning stretching, went to afternoon tea and evening shows. We did not use the casino,or the computer classes this time. We ate in the dining rooms and buffet, which was very, very good. We used the thermal spa. The room was fine and our steward wonderful. We encountered NO ONE that was not polite, friendly, respectful and fair. We chose this ship because it was newer and we lived the itinerary and not too many sea days. (We have been on about 26 cruises) This is what we loved: 1. The ship is beautiful 2. Staff is attentive and friendly 3. Dinner in dining room doesn’t seem rushed 4. Itinerary 5. Very clean 6. Despite reviews that say they don’t have an “unlimited” internet package they actually did. On our 10 day cruise it cost $179. This is what we did NOT love: 1. Theatre so small it does not accommodate guests. We showed up 40 minutes early for two shows and there was not one seat left 2. Formal night, a dance show is about to begin, ONE show, really? It starts at 9pm and we are waiting outside the theatre standing here at 7:50pm, we have a 1 hour 10 min wait. It’s day 9 of our 10 day cruise and we love the dance shows and this is the third one and if we get a seat it will be the first one we get to see. I think the theatre holds 300 people, I may be wrong. Smallest theatre on any cruise ship I have ever been on. They need 3 shows per night for the dance shows to accommodate the guests. Tomorrow night is the last dance show and they also have ONE show. So nope we won’t sail with them again. 3. Eating in the lido buffet is exasperating. You can basically not get any food by yourself, maybe you can serve yourself some fruit or a cinnamon roll AFTER they hand you a plate. What I’m trying to say is that the buffet is a lot of work. You have to wait in line. You can’t grab your own plate. There is say one person maybe two behind the glass at each food station. At one food station this one girl has to make crepes, spoon out oatmeal and cream of wheat into bowls, put bacon and sausage on your plate..it’s pretty crazy and slow. Then suppose you want toast or a bagel, now go to the bread food station wait in that line so that one person that’s runnjng that can take care of it. Then find a table and try to get coffee, it’s just an ordeal. 4. Then they close breakfast most days at 9:30am. 5. The food has been good but some meals better than others. Not every meal has been amazing. Read Less

I am not a person who feels that a vacation should go perfectly. I expects some bumps along the way. In saying this, I am bothered by the bumps that are preventable. The issues that I have detailed below in the 'Cabin Review' were preventable and it is my hope that the creaking room is repaired before others experience sleepless nights on their vacation. We found the crew as wonderful as ever. Aside from the creaking room, we were looked after very well. I was quite worried about the entertainment after 4 nights. Post Modern Jukebox was not good. The theater was full when this group started and at least one quarter of the people left the first night before the performance ended and less people showed up for the second night performance. There was only polite clapping during the performances. With the second performance they gave themselves an encore when no one was clapping and people were leaving. Some awkwardly sat down while others just left. One of the singers had an amazing voice. I hope she finds another company. The entertainment got better. There were two dance performance nights and they were very good with well deserved standing ovations. The live orchestra performance to Planet Earth II with the wrap around screen was great. Karen Grainger (female impressionist) was very good. We enjoyed quite a few Lincoln Centre performances, wonderful! We would have attended more but our early dining time conflicted with performance times. We went to 2 Rolling Stone Room performances and the band was great. We watched a few songs from the BB King room and again this was good. We liked the music walk. Read Less

We had a beautiful holiday with the Koningsdam. Our overall rating is average. The ship is good, but not perfect. And that is the reason why it is average rated by us. We had better cruises, like with NCL, Princess and Celebrity. We expected already that the average age of the cruising people is more than 50 years. But I think that we were with 48/47 years one of the youngest on the ship. Not a real problem, but it was almost every day "excuse me, we will continue our walk, but can we pass you? You are blocking the way". Sometimes very irritating. But ok, if we want younger people, we have to cruise on NCL or Carnival etc. Our embarkation was really perfect. In 15 minutes we were already on board (with some help of a very nice man from HAL ;-) ). Our first impression of the ship was good, but it was not glamerous. It is not the "WOW"-effect. There is no attrium with a creature, lightning or other things that gives the WOW. It is standard. This is also in the corridor to the rooms. It is standard. No beatiful paintings or prints. The stairs to the different floors are nice with beautiful paintings or art. When we entered the room (6010), we were suprised. There is a lot of space in the room. Beautiful bathroom, very good bed, a lot of storage, nice balcony. But not really clean. We saw spots on the door, mirrors etc. And the worst thing, the climate-control. The first days it looked that the temperature of the room was not cool, but the display of the control was marked with "cool". We went to the reception and they promised to help this. But after one day nothing was changed. The temperature in the room was too high, worser in the night. Went again back to the reception, they promised again to help. But nothing, even no reaction from them. And surprise, surprise, last evening the temperature of the room was finally COLD! We think that there was a problem with the climate-controle in our place of the ship, but why didnt the reception mention this? By the way, we have send now a complaint to the HAL as we were not happy with this situation! The evening-program was very linked to the people of the USA. Rock and Roll, Blues, pop music. Suprising as the average of people was high! I didnt know that people of 80/90 years like rock and roll....we didnt hahahaha...it was much to loud! And the shows in the theather....really BAD!!! The dance-show, what was this? The BBC-film with live music is ok, but live??? No no, it is some musicians playing with the music-tape from the BBC. Also the other shows we visited were bad (we have very good experiences with the NCL and Celebrity). Food in restaurant was good. Our waiter was ok, the wine-sommelier was slow sometimes. The second glass of wine was mostly after our diner! Meat was very good, but the fish was sometimes fat (looked like it was cooked in oil?). And also here, it was not really clean. The chairs were dirty, the walls were dirty of red wine?? Variaty of food was ok, but we had better experiences with other cruises. Our package of drink was EXCELLENT! 15 drinks a day with a limit of 9 dollar each drink. But most drinks were less than 9 dollar (cocktails, coffees, refreshments etc). Only the choiche of wine was very low with the limit of 9 dollar. We dont like to eat in the buffet-restaurant. So we did this only 2 times in our cruise. Food was ok, but difficult to see which food you could choose. There are no good signs explaining what is for example on the sandwich. Buffet restaurant was mostly very busy. Swimmingpool is nice. And as it was mostly good weather the roof was open. Otherwise it was too hot to stay there. But to sun on the decks it was difficult. You had to pick up your own sun bed, mostly they were blocked with a belt. And places to sun on the decks are not really nice. This can be improved for sure! We did some excursions organized by HAL and some organized by other company. The HAL experience with excursions was good. And most surprising, you could immediately go outside (not waiting for half our in the theather). And also the start-time of excursions, very good. Not 8 o clock, but mostly after 9 (mmmm longer sleep). We had a very bad experience with the border of the Virgin Islands. On every visit we had ever done on a island, with all our cruised, we never had to show our ID. But yes, it is USA, TRUMP-country. We had to show our ID to enter the ship. Our ship-card was not enough. It looked like that we were criminals, unbelievable! Unpolite people of this border-people! Yes we forgot to bring our ID, but to be rude to us. With help of some HAL people we could go back to the ship, to take our ID's and to show this to this rude border-people I hope if these 2 guys ever visit Netherlands they never will accepted by our border!!!! And now the best of our trip. The DUTCH CAFE!!! Many thanks for Pim, Jehan and Andre. What a trio! Always a smile, from 7am till 9pm! And lovely Dutch food, snacks, beer etc. Normally we dont like to go to Dutch cafe's outside the Netherlands, we want to have the experience of the country that we visit. But this was so excellent! It was a pleasure to meet these 3 guys and to visit the cafe every day to eat perfect food and lovely beers! Thanks, thanks, thanks!!! The disembarkation went very good. And again, thanks for the 3 guys of the Dutch Cafe. We enjoyed in the morning the coffee, water and waited till we could disembark in the Dutch Cafe. And before this, it was even possible to have breakfast in the restaurant. WOW! It went so fast, it was so good organized! Read Less

my sister-in-law and i 85 & 73 years old respectively) did an 11-night Caribbean cruise, both of us experienced cruises on 5 different lines, mostly HAL for her, Celebrity for me. The good: excellent crew, HAL does a terrific job in choosing and training employees from the captain to the people who clean & maintain. The ship is spotless. I was actually on the ship last May in Europe for 12 nights so could see some of the changes. Club Orange, I think they need to rethink that one. I counted people every time we went by, most I ever saw was 18 on the last night. My suggestion, at least put a sheer curtain so people walking by aren't staring at you and your meal. Lincoln Center Stage was wonderful, likewise BIllboard. Jason & Michael at the piano was just the best. Rolling Stone & BB King's was loud, very loud, and energetic. I'm a little bit of a foodie, I thought the food was pretty good. Beef dishes excellent. But maybe more vegetables would be nice. Now the not-so-good. The theatre in concept is great, but you should not have to get there an hour early to get a seat. They either need to go back to 3 shows a night or hand out tickets. We stood for one show we got to 20 minutes before curtain, could not get near the so-called production show even though we were there 40 minutes before curtain tine. The shows themselves, pretty poor comedian, didn't care for singers. "Big" production show was a laser light show, 6 dancers, canned music. come on, HAL, you can do better. Read Less

First the high points. The ship is beautiful. The exercise facility is the best I’ve seen on any ship. The Lido is large with high quality food and extensive selection. The Dutch cafe is a nice touch as are the deli and pizza place. There is a lot of outdoor seating of. The two level pool lido deck is a nice touch. The bad points are that the cabins seemed cramped compared to other Holland America ships. The changing room at the exercise facility was totally inadequate if you want to shower and shave there. The enrichment seemed to be sponsored by Microsoft and was poorer than on other Holland America ships. But worst of all the entertainment venues were totally inadequate and overcrowded. If you go to the main venue you have to get there at least 45 minutes early to even look for a seat. All the others were over crowded also. All in it is a disappointment for their new flagship. This was our 44th cruise. We had previously sailed on the Maasdam 18 years ago. The Koningsdam's emphasis on music is what caused us to choose this sailing. We felt that Hal's new emphasis on entertainment that appeals to a younger crowd, plus a newer ship, would make this cruise a good choice for us. We are eclectic cruisers. Last year we sailed on Seabourn for 12-days in the Caribbean and 7-days on an NCL Bermuda cruise from Boston with friends. We were not impressed with Seabourn's food and service. Our expectations for the NCL were very low. We were shocked to find the dining service and food quality on NCL was up-to-par, if not better, than Seabourn. Embarkation and Disembarkation were flawless. We arrived at the pier around 10:40am and were onboard at 11:30am. We were pleasantly surprised to be informed upon entering the Koningsdam that all staterooms were ready. Our stateroom was 8197, an aft facing verandah with a very large deck. It was a shame to have one tiny table, two upright chairs and just one foot rest. Our room stewardess, who was amazing, found us an extra table to allow us some more room to put our feet up. We knew the Lido would be jammed at lunch, so we opted to have lunch in the Main Dining Room (MDR). Lunch was lovely. The service was prompt and the food was delicious. One huge negative for me was that we were seated in a corner and all I had to look at was a solid white panel. Those panels should be replaced with art as they block the window views. The MDR décor was rather plain. The yellow wall color did not add to the room and the white panels were boring. After lunch, we spent the rest of the day exploring the ship. We thought the ship décor overall was very relaxing. We had pre-paid our three specialty dinner reservations which was helpful as the HAL assigned times did not work for us. We stopped at the dining reservation center on Deck 2, across from the Pinnacle Grill to change our reservations. At the end of the cruise, our pre-paid dining was credited to our account. If you are concerned about specialty dining at certain dates and times, I recommend pre booking online. At the same desk, we were able to reserve the next two nights at 7:45pm in the MDR. We would have preferred 7:00pm or 7:30pm, but 7:45 is the earliest time we were able to reserve with Anytime Dining. The first night in the MDR was great. We arrived and were immediately seated. The service and food were perfect. We were happy campers! However, the first Gala Night was a disaster. We arrived at 7:45pm and were shocked to see the "reservation" line was almost around the corner. However, the line for walk in was light. I went up and asked how long the wait was without reservations and was told 15 minutes. We stood in the reservation line for over 20 minutes. When we finally got to the front of the line, I mentioned to the officer who was just standing there, why we had the wait and walk ins were seated before us and he just shrugged his shoulders. No apology. No explanation. We were seated in the middle of the room in a very poor location. The din from the fully packed MDR made it almost impossible to hear each other. Tables who had arrived five and ten minutes after us had their orders taken first. Our waiter threw the menus on our plates and did not greet us. Obviously, he was frantic to get orders in and food served. I've had warmer service in a cafeteria. My soup arrived cold. My tenderloin was that side piece that chefs typically do not serve as tenderloin as it has a large fatty center. Neither the waiter or his assistant inquired about our meal. The head waiter, stopped by at the end of the meal and was quite gracious. He informed us that they had been having large issues with the MDR on the first Gala night. He offered to make reservations for the next few nights at 7:00pm. We found the 7:00pm time to be perfect as it appeared that most reservations were for 7:45pm and we never had to wait again. We opted to dine in the Pinnacle on the second gala night and it was a great option. We had breakfast most mornings in the MDR. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was always served hot. We had breakfast twice in the Lido and while the omlets were fantastic, the hectic atmosphere was just not for us. Our sea days were spent either in the main or aft pool. We preferred the aft pool location. However, the smokers take up ¼ of the space. The smoking area was never as crowded as the non-smoking side. We decided that we would be looking for non-smoking ships in the future. The towel game is played in the main pool. After 7:45am, most chairs were taken. The Aft pool still had chairs available until around 8:30am. Of course, they were by the smoking section. I truly feel that a better option should be available to prevent chair hogs. We like to read early in the day and witnessed chairs that sat empty until mid-day. We danced most nights in BBKings or in Rock & Roll. We enjoyed the Billboard as well. We only went to one show and enjoyed the entertainment provided by the comic pianist. We saw the cruise director, Tom, for the first time at that show and did not see him again until we passed him on disembarkation day. We visited the Crows Nest a few times. This venue is totally underused. It would have been so nice to have had a small combo playing in the evenings when we were too tired to dance and just wanted some background music. We looked forward to the Lincoln Center performances, but they were at very odd times and we missed them. We had four sea days and very few daytime activities were scheduled. This was the first time we have sailed in an aft facing verandah. We loved the shower and the large verandah. Our room was just under the Lido deck aft pool and we did hear some chair scraping each morning about 7:00am. We are early risers so the noise did not bother us. We were more effected by the noise of the propellers as they were loud when we were cruising at higher speeds. We decided to go back to mid-ship staterooms in the future. What do we know now that we wished we had known before our cruise? We would have scheduled main dining at 7:45pm. Folks in assigned dining seemed to be much happier with their dining experience. The upper dining room appeared to be quieter and more organized. We took way too many clothes. My husband did not need his dark suit. A navy blue blazer and nice shirt would have been fine. On the final night, several men were in shorts in the MDR. Will we cruise HAL again? The jury is still out for us. While we enjoyed our cruise; we were not wowed. The Koningsdam lacked sizzle. Boarding the ship was underwhelming. There were no smiling officers welcoming us or waiters bearing champagne. We were herded into elevators and told our rooms were ready. We couldn’t help compare HAL to Princess. We tend to choose cruises based on the itinerary. In the future, If we have a choice between a HAL and Princess cruise; we would choose Princess. Read Less

Previous Holland cruises were fantastic with excellent food and service. We explored other lines and wanted to return to the excellence that was Holland. Unfortunately this cruise was hit and miss.... food in the dining room was not Holland quality forcing us to have to pay up for specialty restaurants to get good food. Some of the staff were the excellence of old Holland days but there were many who were not. In my opinion Holland is just not the same. The experience started badly when embarkation took 2 hours standing in the sun outside with not even a hello or were sorry for the wait. We missed lunch because of this. Once on board we found the ship's decor to be less elegant but still clean. The best staff were in the rolling stone's rock room and the band was very good. The best food on the ship was in Sel De Mar! We ate there 3 times. Also the ports were great and were the best part of this cruise! Read Less

My husband and I decided to take this cruise on the Koningsdam because we had been years before on Holland America and wanted to try it again. I knew it was a relatively new ship and we both thought we would enjoy the trip. Unfortunately the activities on board were practically none. On the positive side, the service was excellent and our cabin stewards were wonderful. We only ate three times in the main dining room, and decided to eat upstairs most evenings in the Lido Cafe. The food was very good, and plentiful. Also the choices for breakfast in the cafe were excellent. The entertainment on ship was also good and bad. Two production shows with dancers and a juggler, were far from entertaining. The best show was a couple who sang Beatles songs. Also the music venues included a Rolling Stones Rock Band, a wonderful piano duo, and a BB King group . These were all great. Since there was so little activities on board we watched a lot of movies in our cabin. We only went on two shore excursions since we had been at these ports several times before and could have completely done without the port of Tortola. We are experienced cruisers, who feel that overall it was a lovely ship, but was really too quiet for us. If you want to rest, great cruise. Read Less

We have sailed Holland 4 times in 4 years. This was not like the others. The ship seemed too big with many of the help not speaking English very well. Seemed to gather a lot without checking on people’s orders in the Main Dining Room. Embarkation and Dembarkation were a nightmare. Over 2 hours, almost missed flight home. Spent more than an hour waiting for the bus to leave for the airport. Officers yelling at passengers. Difficulty getting reservations at speciality restaurants even though they were half empty. Seemed like lots of people not knowing their jobs. No Test Kitchen demonstrations. Casino very Smokey with loud, rude, drunk people. Smoking even though there was a non smoking night. Food in main dining room so-so. Lots of upsale. Couldn’t even get coffee, oj, and English Muffin for in room dining. Fake scrambled eggs only option. Best dining: Sel de Mer. Cabin was fine. Very loud music in BB Kings. Heard from many people this was not the Holland of before. Felt like cutbacks at every corner. Just didn’t have the feel of the smaller ships. Read Less

Took 5 days for guest relations to contact us about a mechanical/ air conditioning noise .Several cabins had this problem.Problem never fixed. Finally offered $100 obc for 9 sleep interrupted nites. Was very concerned about apparent shortage of help, which was reflected in public restrooms.Soap was dispensed “1” drop at a time!Very aggravating.Counter had water all over.Toilet seat covers not refilled.Purell dispensers for dining room were often empty. No one in attendance requesting hand washing when it was filled.Buffet had like an ultrasonic water washing station.Again no one monitoring,so people were just bypassing it,maybe because if you were wearing a watch it got wet!The only saving grace were our waiters in dining room and asst.matre’d.Just great. We were told that this ship was rushed into service and has had ongoing problems.Never would go on this ship again.Too many other options.,and didn’t feel cleanliness was up to par.We ate in buffet couple times and had salad that had spoiled “spring mix” salad mixed in.TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.Never ate there again. We were “comptd chocolate covered strawberries in our room, which we didn’t eat because they were half spoiled! Obviously quality control is not a priority. The dining room, however did not have food issues. It was just ok. Read Less

We picked this cruise because it went Tortola and Antigua, islands we have never visited. We are 3 star HOLLAND Cruisers so we know Holland pretty well. The ship did not disappoint. It is beautiful. However some parts of our experience were less then acceptable. To start, the embarkation was a nightmare. I received an e mail ftom HAL about Adweek before telling me to arrive between 1 - 1:30pm. We followed directions and arrived about 12:45pm and saw the longest line I have ever seen on HAL. Did they tell every one to arrivecatbthe same time? It appeared that way. The line went out the door, down to the end of the building, around the corner and back to the entry point into the building. It took over an hour. Exhausting in the hot Florida sun! Once on the ship we found our storeroom and it was nice however the extra pillows and mattress wedge I requested were not there And the bed was arranged in twins not queen. It took about 15 min to reach customer service to make another request. Overall the ship services disappointing. Not up to the level I was use to on HAL. Food was ok! Again not what I have come to expect from HAL with a few exceptions. I loved the NY Deli but the service is very slow. The Dutch Cafe was a nice surprise And The servers were excrptional. MDR was disappointing but the standards like salmon and steak that are available every night saved my dinner experience on at least 4 out of the 9 nights. Entertainment has improved with the addition of the ROLLING STONE along with the BB King venue that is a few years old. Overall not a bad cruise but getting use to the new "Normal" for HAL may take awhile. Read Less

We have sailed many times on Holland America and had no reservations about booking with them again. We chose this trip because of the itinerary. We were disappointed in this trip. We flew in to ft Lauderdale the evening before embarking in case of bad weather...a real possibility flying out of Iowa in December. We arrived at the port 1 and found a huge line waiting to embark. We were pleasantly surprised how quickly the line moved. The curbside staff member we had helping with our luggage was extremely slow and other curbside staff noticed and a loud verbal argument began. Very unprofessional. The ship had just come from dry dock after a refurbish. it smelled new, looked clean and fresh. The decor was different then other Holland Ships. Less antiques and more modern decor. We had an aft vista suite on 7th floor. It was spacious, clean, had ample storage, and a modern bathroom. The bathroom was still very small but the walk in shower with no tub was nice. We liked the detachable shower head and spacious room in the shower. We were not impressed with the main dining room service. It was very slow and the food selection was not to our liking. It was a little over done for us. We only ate in the dining room 3 times. The Lido was a NIGHTMARE. Service was slow, there were almost always dirty tables, no silverware, no where to sit and the ice tea machines were almost always empty or broken. I went on many missions to find ice tea. This was the first cruise there was more then 1 time all the glasses at the beverage station were gone and no ice was available. The food selection in the lido was repetitious and since you were not able to serve yourself it was slow. There was also poor planning on having food available. I waited many days for food to come from the kitchen because they ran out. They also didn't have syrup at the station with the waffles or ketchup at the station with the fries. The theater entertainment was not to our liking. Lots of pianists, solo singers etc. We only attended 1 comedian and he was fair at best. I did like the music in the BB King lounge and Rolling Stone Lounge. It was however very loud.During the day there were few activities available. Lots of Spa seminars, port seminars etc. The staff on the ship was friendly, but unlike other ships you often had to initiate a hello. Few smiles. It seemed as though the crew was inexperienced. our cabin steward and his assistant were the friendliest of the bunch. We loved all the ports. We did miss half moon Cay because it was to rough for the tenders to go. This has become a norm for us. Our last 4 cruises that were suppose to go to Half Moon Cay had the port cancelled for the same reason. We only booked 1 shore excursion through the ship and it was ridiculously crowded. We went on a catamaran and you literally could not move it was so full. Disembarkation was no more chaotic then usual. They do need to find a way to prevent passengers from leaving before their color is called. Customs was a breeze and retrieving our luggage was relatively easy. We were disappointed this ship didn't offer luggage direct. We booked transfers to the airport with Holland. they offered no instruction on where to go etc. It worked out ok though. Read Less

Interested in visiting Islands not visited before. Party of four, two were elderly parents. Embarkation was a hassle. Brought several bottles of Vintage wine, champagne and port on board including bottle of vermouth(wine) as I had ordered gin and vodka delivered to room. Vermouth was confiscated at embarkation. Excuse was higher alcohol content, @ 15% alc. (In a martini? This policy is inept. Why spend $100 for the gin and vodka?) Yet they allowed two Bottles of vintage port at 18% alc. (One oz each with dessert.) All except vermouth was to be consumed in restaurant with meals. As my wine was better than any they had on board, corkage fee was irrelevant. Assigned #18, to embark.. Numbers were called in order except called #19 first which was a large group, then #18 which put a smaller group behind them. Sent directly to the adjoining balcony cabins (previously reserved) to drop off carry-ons before joining the crowd at the Lido to eat lunch. Rested 'til dinner on balcony with bottle of sparkling wine as gift. (Late 8 PM seating). Table for the four of us. Chose instead of open dining to have same dinner staff. Knew few phrases of Indonesian which broke the ice and we had a wonderful time with them at dinners. Food and presentation was excellent. To accomplish that for thousands of meals daily is a feat I can't comprehend. My major complaint about dinner is that it conflicted with the show times. Eating late dinner, there was no way to get to the theater shows. This is a major fault as far as my family was concerned, and should be corrected. We never had this problem with Holland America before. Another issue was drinking water and ice bucket. Hierarchy between stewards and in-room dining staff. Couldn't order water and Ice refill together. Got carafe of ice water. Had to order separately. Ice from steward and water from in-room dining. Didn't choose to drink $5 per liter bottled water in cabin. Final issue was a/c in room was sporadic. On packing day, a/c failed completely, and we called to have it repaired. This was done after hour or two, but we really suffered until it was repaired. . We enjoyed the cruise as a whole and the ports. On the whole it is a fabulous cruise if you avoid the pitfalls we experienced. Finally disembarkation. Elderly parents and us were initially assigned different colors. This wasn't feasible and we corrected to black#2, (last off). Mix up in shuttle service handling baggage. Somehow, unnoticed, my bag wasn't loaded, and arriving at hotel, my bag was missing. Shuttle took me back for bag but it was gone. Attempts to find it contacting Holland America personnel was usless. They were loading passengers like robots. Knew there job assigned and that was all. Couldn't or wouldn't help. told to stand over ther and wait. Waited an hour with nothing.Left terminal and finally found heplful porter you called supervisor, who found bag in 10 minutes. Unfortunately this delay caused elderly parent to miss her plane. Read Less

We arrived in Ft Lauderdale after driving about 3 hours across the state from SW Gulf coast of Florida. Parked at Park-n-go which is very close to port and they discount the rate substantially if prepaid reservations are made on line. Arrived at terminal about noon. Longest lines we have ever experienced on HAL. Got checked in after about 30 minutes in line and then waited about 30 minutes to board. Went to cabin deck 4 aft veranda. These aft verandas have a very deep veranda, about twice the depth of the higher decks. Two chairs and small table. One chair had extension to make into lounge type chair. Cabin actually little larger than expected and really liked the shower with glass doors. No more sticky curtains. Toilet seat at odd angle and knees hit shower straight on so have to sit little sideways but not too bad. Taller folks might have more of a problem. Lots of storage, lots of plugs for electronics. Night light automatically lights at floor to guide you to bathroom at night, but no night light in bathroom. We took our own small battery powered tealights which worked out very well. Our steward was very attentive and learned our routine quickly so room always made up when we returned late morning usually and he always kept ice bucket full, which I had requested. Koningsdam is about 2500 passengers which is about 500 more than the Vista class ships we normally sail and you can tell. Pools, hot tubs always seemed crowded. Much more so than on previous cruises as they are pretty much the same size as the smaller ships. But the deck furniture is a big improvement. Lots of soft cushioned sofas and chairs as well as tables with softer cloth type woven seats/backs which are way more comfortable than the woven rattan(fake) type chairs on previous HAL cruises. Didn't need to use a towel for cushioning. But they kept running out of pool towels. Looked all over one afternoon and never did find one. Lido seemed more crowded than other ships and this exacerbated by the general practice to only keep one side open which made for much longer lines than we experienced previously. Food in Lido fairly good with rotisserie or baked chicken about every meal, prime rib and steak, pork roast, turkey offerings. Wonderful salad bar, Asian station & Italian station where you pick ingredients and they prepare. Nice breakfast selection with about anything one could want. Generally food well prepared and tasty. Really nice bread station, the usual ice cream, bread pudding, etc. Miss the made to order sandwiches as they now have a selection of 4 or 5 pre-made offerings. Tried pizza parlor (bagels in am) upstairs from Lido and very good pizza. Reuben just ok. Long lines and long wait for food generally. Loved the Grand Dutch Cafe where specialty coffee drinks and alcohol are charged, but all of the food is included in fare. Nice real Dutch selections. Ordered room service couple of nights and delivered timely and hot and well prepared. Lunch at Pinnacle Grill is a great deal in my opinion and was delicious. Tamarind was really good and we also enjoyed Canaletto's one evening which was very good also. Did not go to Main Dining Room as too many stories from fellow passengers about 45 minute wait for table, 30 minute wait for water glasses to be filled, 2 1/2 hour dining times and even longer. The main dining room seemed to receive the most complaints from other passengers. The dining room manager told one lady the reason her dinner took over 2 1/2 hours was because she ordered 2 appetizers. She not happy to say the least. Entertainment for us consisted of BB King Blues club and this band was great. Exceptional male and female singers and band musicians. Did not enjoy the new Rock and Roll band. Singers were bad. So much that just had to leave as was an assault to our ears and we do love rock and roll. Missed the BBC Planet Earth presentation but people liked it who went. Every evening there was a movie shown on lido but we did not attend these. We had been on this same itinerary few years ago except this time we went to Dominica instead of St Kitts on previous cruise. Didn't like St Lucia as seemed dirty and way too crowded. Nice private excursion in Martinique with little local goodies at each stop which included a church, waterfall, St Pierre, and rum distillery. Really enjoyed this. Took cab in Barbados to Brandon's beach and rented beach loungers and umbrella at Rascals which included 2 rum punch. Beers only $2.50. Beautiful water and uncrowded beach. This is more of a local's beach. In St Martin just walked to boardwalk and had few drinks at beach bar. Saw pictures of the destruction from hurricane last year and actually amazed they have come so far in the recovery, at least on Dutch side. On St Thomas we just wondered the few shops that were open post hurricane. Surprised so many still closed. On Dominica we docked at a cargo port outside of town and decided to just stay on board. Some people unhappy with docking situation especially when they tried to return via taxi. Taxis not allowed thru port gates and no signage how to get to ship walking through and around all the cargo containers. Near heat stroke wondering around port for one acquaintance. Finally a dock worker took pity, opened a locked door and guided him and those with him to the ship. All in all we had a good time but just not up to previous HAL experiences. This was first cruise out of dry dock. All of the ship clocks were broken until a few were fixed toward end of cruise. Fewer elevators than smaller ships and one was out in aft bank at least 95% of the time. Saw one out most of the time when we used the other banks also. They couldn't fix these during dry dock? Annoying things such as this and the overcrowded lido restaurant made this cruise less enjoyable than previous ones we have taken with HAL. Oh, and the artwork looked like it just came from the Art Auction on board and this is not a good thing. Previously we have really enjoyed the art on the HAL ships. We will sail HAL in the future am sure. But will go back to the smaller, and yes older ships which are our preference. Read Less

We are a husband and wife in our mid-30s from Central Florida. We have sailed Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, and now for the first time, Holland America. We chose this cruise for the pricing, the itinerary, the newness of the ship, and that it had a bit of Celebrity's design influence. We don't like belly flop contests and the party atmosphere of other lines, and we don't mind sailing with an older crowd. But I think this crowd was older than even we care for. And at times it was other passengers that would put a damper on our holiday. It was unpleasant and embarrassing for us to overhear the copious amounts of complaints and demands that passengers put on ship staff and excursion guides who are just doing their absolute best with what they have to work with. Our stateroom was a tad smaller than what we have experienced before but the bigger shower makes up for that. The angle of the toilet was not a big deal, just initially awkward. The one thing about the stateroom that was aggravating was the closet doors which should be sliding doors instead of the french door style which interfered with the bathroom door (only a problem is your spouse is getting dressed and someone is wanting to get in and out of the bathroom). Our stateroom attendant was excellent! I found the food to be good while my husband was not impressed. Always a subjective topic. The first few nights seemed to be complete chaos with the dining room as it usually is on any cruise. We had open seating and while you could technically "make reservations," you could only make reservations for 5:15, 5:30, or 7:45. But after a few nights we were able to go at 6 or 7 and not have to wait long for a table. The dining room is louder than I would have liked and all the clanking of the plates and silverware gave it a cafeteria sound. The Lido Marketplace is also utter chaos during usual lunch times. The walkways seem tight and everyone is wandering about trying to decide what they want to eat, standing in the middle of the walkways. We tried to avoid it when we could. We enjoyed specialty dining in Tamarind and felt it was well worth the money. Music is very much highlighted on the ship but the shows in the Rolling Stone Rock Room and Billboard really weren't up our alley. We like all sorts of music but this was heavily geared toward boomers, and while we enjoy piano-playing, the dueling pianos were borderline cheesy. However we did enjoy the performances by Lincoln Center Stage. The Planet Earth 2 performance was really good! We did not spend much time in the casino as it does get smokey and then it smells like they try to cover it up with Febreeze. One thing that we discovered that we like that the Koningsdam did not have was a well-designed and open atrium. This is not a tiny ship by any means but it just felt really small and not as open as others that we have been on. The itinerary was jam-packed with islands which was great and I was so thrilled with seeing St. Lucia. I did not like that we had to dock farther away from the downtown area in Barbados and we were on the other side of Havensight in St. Thomas which was a pain with taxis. Being French, Martinique acts like they could care less that you are there. We had a pleasant cruise overall and are very easy to please, but the much older and demanding demographic was a turnoff for us which is such a shame. Read Less
