Viking are very efficient, I cannot fault their communication and organisation. They organised the flights and transfers as well. However, they wanted an extortionate amount for 2 days in Amsterdam before the cruise, so we organised it ourselves and so had to make our own way to the hotel. The ship was lovely, very clean, smooth lines, no chintz! The other passengers were probably 50% Americans, 25% British, 25% other and quite a wide age range from people in their 30s to 70s. I would say most of the people were 50 - 75. The service was excellent, but I think over the top. After cleaning the room in the morning, is there really any need for the maid to clean it again in the evening? This is one reason it is so expensive. I have stayed in top notch hotels where they close the curtains and turn down the bed and I think that is all that is needed. Alcoholic and soft drinks are included at both lunch at dinner and not just one, they keep topping up your glasses, so people like me who don't drink are actually subsidising those that do and they certainly take advantage of it! Some people opted for the drinks package which included certain drinks all day. However, both passengers in the state room have to take it, so it wasn't worth it for us. the service throughout the ship was excellent, with a good choice of food for breakfast and a limited choice for lunch with a good salad buffet and burgers if you did not fancy what was on offer. However, I was disappointed with the evening meals. There was always a regional menu of 3 courses, plus 2 choices of international dishes for each course and if you didn't like them, there was steak, burgers or chicken. However, I found it difficult to find something I liked every night and resorted to the steak and chips on several occasions. There was a German buffet one night, but as I am not keen on lots of sausages, cooked meat and pork I was not impressed, neither was the Jewish gentleman on our table! One night Thai soup was on the menu and I ordered that as it contained co-conut milk and as I am lactose intolerant did not expect to be served a very creamy soup containing milk! Also, the greatest disappointment for me was the tiny servings for dessert. The excursions were well organised with a leisurely option for those who had limited mobility, which we took advantage of as my husband had a bad knee. Little treats awaited us on our return to the ship which was nice and we all had electronic gizmos with earpieces so we could hear the guide, which were very easy to use. The excursions are mainly walking tours in the cities, concentrating on the history, architecture and cathedrals etc. The guides were very good except the fortress at Koblenz. The guide was an actor and it was supposed to be amusing, but it was not. The evening entertainment was mainly a pianist, but one evening there was a classical concert, another glass blowing demonstration on the adjoining ship, two quizzes which were great fun as they were not the usual format and a disco night. Ivan was in charge of this and he was excellent. We had been on ocean cruises but this was our first river cruise. We loved the fact there was less than 200 people on the boat, so you got to know people very quickly and we made some good friends. It was lovely to watch the scenery as you floated by and you won't get sea sick! Not far to walk to the cabin or the restaurant. However, there is not much to do when sailing except talk, drink, read, sunbathe, sleep or walk around the walking track. If we did another cruise, I probably would not take one that included drinks as this inflates the price if you don't drink very much. Read Less

Just one optional tour off the ship did not meet my expectations. The other optional tours were good. Although the walking tour to see the windmills was a cold and blustery day we went anyway. Guide was very pleasant and kept us in a good mood with the rain and wind whirling around us. The day we went thru the canyon on the Rhine it was cold but we crowded on the top to get pictures and have a 360 degree view. They brought us blankets and coffee with Baileys and piping hot. Was so thoughtful. They really take good care of you. Loved it when we came back on ship after walking or shopping tour and staff had mimosas or other small shot sized drinks. They kept us informed all the way. Our cruise was the first one since September that could travel the length of the scheduled tour because they had rain and water level had risen. That was so nice for crew and passengers. This was a great crew. Only thing besides the beer tout that was not good ,they did our airfare and we left late out of Basel and had to run in Frankfort to catch our overseas flight. Please allow more time. So I am on the Rhine Getaway as I type. Left 11/23 from Amsterdam. Mixed feelings here. Some relative to Viking, some to the cruise itinerary itself. First be aware that you WILL change ships, probably through year end, regardless of what Viking says. They have been doing it for months, and will likely do it through year end. It wasn't too disruptive, though and they arranged a Rhine day tour to see yhe castles we would have missed. More bus time than normal, however. The experience is not quite what you see in the promotional videos. Germany is heavily industrialized. They don't show scenes of industrial plants, container terminals. etc. that dominate the landscape. Docked in an industrial port last night, lined up w another ship. Not their fault, but it ain't Tuscanny! Food was pretty good, although tonight was the Taste of Germany! The only night there was no alternative menu (just when we needed one). Just not into bratwurst, sourkraut, etc. This was an exception. Salzburg was definitely the highlight. Skipped the bus tour to Heidleburg and did 2 days in Salzburg. Much prefer France. Clientele was interesting. Not sure how some guests were able to afford this cruise, but they did bring along thier finest biker t shirts.Overall a pleasant group though. We have cruised extensively and this is our first river cruise. I think next time we'll rent a villa in Tuscanny for a week. Without dining excessively as you do on a cruise it should be no more expensive. Bon voyage! Read Less

We purposely chose the explorer suite for the comfort it offered plus the use of our deck, watching scenery along the the Rhine river valley. Both ships were as nice as our previous cruise down the Danube and the crews on the two boats were pleasant and professional. I think we were disproportionately punished though, by all the time we spent bussing from Cologne to Strasbourg without having stopped in Koblenz or Speyer. I served in the U.S.Army, stationed in Nuremberg and Frankfurt in 1970-1972. I was particularly looking forward to revisiting Heidelberg on my cruise. I knew there was more to the city than the castle. I think had we not had to bus all the way to Heidelberg from Strasbourg we might have had more time to spend in this old university town. By the time we reached Breisach am Rhein we had spent so much time on busses we passed on the Black Forest bus trip and spent the day in Breisach and enjoyed a few hours in the village and our deck. I must say the service, the crews, the accommodations were all excellent. I am inclined to question the necessity of not cancelling our trip. I’m not sure the sacrifices of lost time in the cities, time spent on the busses, and loss of utility of our cabin amenities were worth the sacrifices made by the passengers. Read Less

Our family has spent many happy time son the Rhein, while I was growing up there, we love Germany and the castles we knew we would see. This was our 2nd Viking Cruise and we were all (4 of us) very excited to go. My parents had chosen to include my sister and I on their travels with Viking for a 2nd time. We arrived in Amsterdam, and were picked up by Viking which was very nice and went very smooth. Boat was docked extremely close to everything, and we could walk right downtown and to the Chocolate Factory...YUM! It was truly pretty. The 2nd day we were off, and headed to Kinderdijk, my favorite stop of the entire trip, beside Basel. It was worth the bus ride. Beautiful!! Then we headed to Koln, which was a Sunday, unfortunately. Not a good day to be in Germany as a tourist, many things are closed. But the Cathedral and Museum were open. I dont remember Koblenz at all, thank goodness I've been there a ton of times. In Rudesheim we walked all around, and it truly is what one imagines, a Wine town would be like. Love it there. Strasbourg we had to take a bus to the city and had an extremely short amount of time. Several of our side trips that we paid for would have been better served staying by the boat and exploring there. The LAST stop was horrible, a tourist trap in the mountains...the glass blown owl arrived home in the USA and was PLASTIC! Basel is amazing and was also a wonderful stay over with the spectacular public transport system. We stayed in the Hotel near the Airport, we made the reservation ourselves and was totally the best way to go! Read Less

Traveled with my sister and her husband, Oct 5 - 12, Basel - Amsterdam. The ship was clean, food was fair to good, wine selections poor and included internet virtually unusable due to extremely low speeds (10+ minutes to load a page!). The included tours, were, for the most part, a waste of time. The Black Forest tour was a 1.5 hour bus ride to reach a small shopping center, missing Freiburg and other interesting sites. The Cologne city walking tour was a brief tour of the Cathedra, interesting, but brief and far short of seeing the city. The optional wine tasting tours were also disappointing, Fairly long bus rides to visit a single winery, tasting 3 varieties, and then having ample time to buy their offered products. Once again, a tour that I paid for, only to be shepherded to another shopping venue. The only tours I can recommend is the village of Colmar, the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and the Bruhl Palace. The last full day of the cruise was spent at the "Kinderdijk windmills", while somewhat interesting, certainly not worth an entire day of the cruise. This day was wasted, as the cruise could have visited Rotterdam or the Hague, rather than sitting in the middle of nowhere for 12 hours. I've spent the same amount of money/day on Crystal and AMA with much better results. Don't waste your time on Viking River cruises. Read Less

Service and food was excellent. Staff was first rate, especially the cruise director. disappointed in how much time we spent on buses especially when we had to change boats. The set up in the dining room was conducive to meeting new people. Overall a very good experience; we are planning to do another Viking cruise next fall The excursions overall were very good but on the one excursion to the coo coo clock factory, we travelled for about 2 hours and were able so spend only about 30 minutes at the factory, hardly enough time. If that could change some how to allow us more time there it would be nice also, the amount of time on the buses during our change in boats was very long. I'm sure your contingency plans were in place, but overall we spent way too much time on the bus transferring to the new boat, and on other excursions (as above) had too little time to enjoy the scenery and sights. the food was delicious, and I liked that we could have anything on the menu, not restricted to one item. the beer and wine were very good; better than most "house" brands. Wait staff was among the best I've ever seen. Read Less

It was our first cruise and my third time to Europe, but first for my wife. The Rhine trip meant a lot to me because my ancestors came from the region centuries ago. Even with the challenge of low water on the Rhine, the Captain and crew made it all work. This ship was run by professionals and made it totally enjoyable. The Captain was always honest about the situation and how to deal with it - and very accessible. The Cruise Director was excellent and made every day fun and upbeat. The food was very good with multiple options at each meal. You felt like you and the other guests and crew were one big family and the interaction was really great. We did a pre-trip excursion to Lucerne and it was well worth it - particularly the side trip to the Stanserhorn. The ports of call were what we expected (quaint old towns) although being in Colmar and Strasbourg on the weekend made for large crowds. The local guides were very good and the personal microphones made communication easy in a crowd. Our day on the Rhine sailing by the castles was perfect weather and a real treat. Spending time in the Marksburg Castle was one of the trip highlights. Also enjoyed seeing the windmills in Kinderdijk - I took the bike ride and it was fun with the group and guide. It was probably the best vacation experience ever and we have already signed up for another cruise in 2020. Viking delivers on all their promises and made it a great experience. Read Less

The included tours are very informational and well planned. We love climbing the stairs to the tops of the cathedrals and overlooking the entire city! We met some wonderful people on the boat and they made our trip more enjoyable. We have maintained contact with some couples (husband and wife and a sister duo) with whom we would love to meet up with again! The service and food were both excellent. We felt immersed in local culture during our tours, but were given ample free time to venture out on our own. The food was amazing! Service was very good. The staff on this ship was absolutely the BEST!! They were attentive and catered to my specific dietary needs with concern and pleasure. After only 2 days, the bartender, Mladen, knew what drink I enjoyed and had it ready for me as soon as I approached the bar. Valentino, our M’atre de, made sure that each evening I received the menu for the following day so that he could assist me in selecting my meals in regards to my specific needs. He even searched for me one afternoon to provide me with a specially prepared lunch. The dining staff also became aware of my needs and quickly corrected any inconsistencies that arose. We chose this cruise because of advice from our Travel Agent and of hearing good things concerning Viking Cruises from past passengers. The Captain, all crew members, the balcony room, the ports of call, and cleanliness of the ship were all excellent. Our main gripe was the poor quality of the food served on board. As an example, after a very early start on our departure date, we were told on the coach taking us from the airport in Amsterdam to the ship, that a lunch would be ready upon our arrival on board. We were quite hungry by this time, so was looking forward to a good lunch which we expected to be served in the dining room. Instead it was served in a self-service bar at the rear of the ship. It consisted of Soup, Cheese and Tomato or Ham and Tomato baguettes, breaded chicken wings and cold chips and a cake for the sweet. There was also free wine or beer available. We found the main evening meals to be of poor quality. Again as an example "Halibut" on the menu. Yes it was halibut but of the very cheap variety called "Greenland Halibut or Mock Halibut". (How do I know this, because I suspected as such and confirmed it with the head chef). I ordered a shrimp cocktail one evening, only to be served with the poorest quality tasteless shrimps I have ever had, served on a very hard piece of rye bread. I would make a guess that these were cheap Asian shrimps, which are usually served as a cooking shrimp. I tried the Salmon one evening, and although the quality seemed very good, it was ruined by over-cooking and therefore very dry. I also found that the English breakfast bacon was also very over-cooked, and I could have used it as a table tennis bat it was that hard. We had a "Serve yourself" German meal one evening. It was chaos. Imagine over 100 patrons all trying to get served at the same time around a small servery. It was impossible to see what was on offer before the "stampede" I ended up with some breaded meat, which was so grisly, I was unable to eat it. Again poor quality produce. We enjoyed the "free excursions" ( I say "free" because no doubt the cost was included in our original cost of the cruise.) We found them to be most interesting and the guides very good. However, one day we decided not to go on the "free" and take an evening excursion in Rudeheim. We were informed that we would be taken to a typical German restaurant with free wine tasting, entertainment by a typical German band, together with a sumtuous meal. To get to the restaurant we would be taken by a miniature train. This turned out to be Seaside Tractor Train, which left us quite a long way away from our restaurant. We were given a red wine and a white wine which was not our choice with a take it or leave it attitude. The band consisted of a keyboard player, a violin, and lady singer. (Where was the "slap my side" German band ?) The food was very poor, and I had to send my main meal course back because it was cold. It was put in the micro-wave and returned to me. There was no other entertainment except what we, the customers, provided for ourselves. The cost of this trip was 79 Euro each!. I complained to Ivan, the cruise director, concerning what poor value for money this was, given that we had already paid for an evening meal and complimentary wine on board ship. He said he would report my remarks. Haven't hear a thing from Viking. Would we go again - No. This cruise cost us £2600 each (my wife and I) which works out at £742 per day for us both. We enjoyed the camaraderie of meeting lots of nice people. The cruise director (Ivan) was very good, and also the pianist (GeGe ?) Would we go again? Not too sure. It would have to be at a very reduced price. My wife and I are seasoned cruisers, and have completed in the region of about 60 ocean cruises with various lines, and so well experienced in cruise quality. This was our first experience of a river cruise. I am probably being a little unfair with my criticism of the food, as our previous cruise to this one, had been on the Ociania Cruise Ship "Riviera" where, if you really want to know what good food is like, then try this line, Read Less

From beginning to end, this was the trip of a lifetime! Excellent accommodations and facilities and stateroom on the ship. Every single crew member, from captain to chef to concierge to housekeeper, was incredibly welcoming and helpful and beyond friendly. The itinerary was well planned and clearly communicated on a daily basis, so we always knew what to look forward to. Every single excursion, whether included or optional, was excellent and every guide was informative and helpful and more than willing to answer any question (that goes for all the crew members as well). The beautiful scenery we enjoyed, the fascinating history we learned, and the wonderful people people we met, will remain in our memories for a very, very, long time. We traveled with two other couples we’ve known for many years and as the trip neared its end we agreed it had been an incredible experience and we should start planning our next cruise ASAP. If there weren’t so many other places to see, we’d do it all over again! The staff, especially the program director Ivan, were terrific at making all our gatherings fun, even if they were just for sharing information about the next day's activities. We had an amazing time in the lounge the night of the international music quiz. Danced the night away, and even the staff seemed honestly impressed with the energy of the passengers - they made us feel very special that night, as they did every moment of the cruise. Read Less

We had already cruised the Seine (with another cruise line) and then did the Danube River cruise with Viking and there was simply no comparison and no turning back - Viking was head and shoulders above the other cruise line. So when we decided on the Rhine River cruise, it had to be with Viking. The Viking staff is so professional, courteous, and accommodating; the tours are exceptional; and the meals aboard ship are extraordinary. The ship is nicely appointed and well maintained. The tour guides on both of the Viking cruises that we have taken to date were well-informed on their subject matter and very, very interesting. The onboard entertainment was wonderful. Also, the Viking reps who helped plan our cruises were very knowledgeable and extremely helpful- made cruise scheduling an easy and unstressful process. We opted for Viking’s extension in Amsterdam and that was an excellent investment of time and resources. Great, intense view of a city that we had not explored before - we would have missed a lot in this city without Viking. We opted to stay at the Pulitzer in Amsterdam - what a wonderful selection by Viking! One of our best memories of Amsterdam. Always take advantage of the Viking extensions! One criticism - and only one - wish there was a dress code for the main dining salon. Understand when luggage is lost but not when people routinely dress inappropriately in shorts and/or jeans for dinner. Would prefer more of a luxury cruise feel when dining. Read Less

We'd been wanting to cruise the Rhine visiting different countries. We've done about 30 ocean cruises so it was time to do a river cruise and Viking came well recommended. The tours were all we expected and they even offer slower paced tours for those with walking issues. You see the same sites, just at a slower pace. Our favorite was the tour of Ehrenbrutstein fortress in Koblenz. Our guide was a Shakesperian actor who was such fun as well as informative.(This was an extra tour but don't miss it, a cablecar ride is included) .The ship and staff were excellent. Everyone was friendly and helpful, from the captain to room steward. The food was wonderful. There always something to do or even just enjoy the beautiful ship. The views were breathtaking. We stayed in a Veranda and we could just sit outside in the comfortable chair. The food was great and the wait staff was amazing. They gave you a taste of the area you were traveling. The menu had a great selections and I was never disappointed with the food. I traveled with my grandmother and we are planning another cruise soon. We spent 2 extra days in Amsterdam and that was wonderful as well. We had plenty of time to shop and enjoy all the ports. We did do 2 of the added on excursions and they were interesting and well worth it. I will be back on the Viking again without a doubt! Read Less

The service was great, especially in the dining area. Excursions were well planned and it was a lot of fun traveling with along with another Viking ship through most of the locks. The shipboard cleaning staff was also on top of things making out vacation much more enjoyable. We can't say thanks enough for having help at Amsterdam airport as it was definitely busy on our way back home. The evening on board activities were also a lot of fun and appreciated. From the moment we arrived until we departed we felt pampered and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The ship was also spotless and we got to know three of the dining room staff fairly well. We're glad we picked a Vin=king Cruise for our first cruise and starting out on a River Cruise with the Beautiful cities we visited made it all the more memorable. All of our tour guides were great. Thanks guys and ladies for a job well done. Read Less

We had cruised on the Danube with Viking previously and wanted to cruise on the Rhine. With our happy memories of the Danube cruise there was really only one choice. The ship was basically identical to the one that took us along the Danube, even the menus and drink cards seemed familiar. Our cabin was kept in immaculate condition by our attendant, Lotis. Food was excellent. Wines were also excellent. Most sailing is done overnight and there are also situations where you travel independently of the ship, eg we were dropped outside Koln and started our excursion while the ship continued into Koln where we rejoined. This tends to maximise your opportunities for having a good time and seeing the best bits. The included shore excursions were all of a high standard. Cruise Director, Daniel, did a great job. For me the absolute highlights were Koln (particularly staying there after sunset to see the city from the river by night) and Marksburg Castle. Other places visited were interesting. The dining evening in Rudeshiem seemed a little kitsch to me, but other people really loved it. I highly recommend visiting the Technik Museum at Speyer which is only a short walk from where the ship berthed to collect us after the Heidelberg shore excursion. Read Less

Rhine River Cruise Nearly 40 years after we qualified and drifted apart a group of friends from Colombo Medical School suggested a get -together to catch up and compare notes. Eighteen of us just split up after a week on the Viking Eir cruising on the river Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel. Meeting on board a ship named after a goddess of healing was purely coincidental but significant. This certainly is one of the most memorable holidays for me and my partner. Atmosphere on board was friendly and informal, being a small vessel, the number of guests remain small in comparison to an ocean cruiser, so by the end of the week we knew most of the passengers contributing to the friendly atmosphere. We had one of the standard cabins on the main deck (the staff kept calling them "Staterooms") compact but perfectly comfortable with a shower room. Having to negotiate the locks in the river these boats have to be narrow so the rooms are smaller in comparison to an ocean cruiser. The common shared spaces are spacious, comfortable, light and airy; we spent very little of our awake time in the room. One of the most memorable things about Eir was its staff. Everybody from captain to the cleaning staff was cheerful, polite, helpful, and tried extra hard to make it a pleasant experience for the guests. Even the grumpiest and most miserable and complaining guest had to lighten up because of this atmosphere created by the crew. The Chef (Bobby) and his team kept us fed and entertained during meal-times, food was plentiful and very tasty, with a great variety for most of us omnivores, except one strict vegetarian among us who had a limited choice. Wine served with meals was good and the staff very helpful. I have to mention a few by name because of their friendly and attentive service. Cerasela (Ali)waited on us most of the meals with Bart, and two other guys who’s names I forgot to write down but all were equally helpful. On the second day of our cruise I witnessed with embarrassment a somewhat demanding passenger order three main courses from the menu in a single meal and fussing about the food yet the waiting staff were extremely patient polite professional to attend to all the demands of this guest. I found Natalia who served us at the bar very attentive, knowledgeable, and she seemed to remember our individual tastes. She asked me what I liked to try out and I told her I liked single malt scotch whiskies. Over the next few nights she introduced me to several not so common malt whiskies each night. I found her advice very helpful in exploring whiskies I had not tried before. The excursions included in the cruise were good and quite educational as well as enjoyable. Since we were more interested in the company and catching up we did not book many of the optional excursions, the one I took namely the visit to Mercedes-Benz manufacturing plant was disappointing. I have to mention few other individuals who played crucial roles to make us feel welcome and enjoy our holiday. Captain Vadim, hotel manager Luciano, program director Daniel, Maria at the front desk, maitre d’ Ronell, are some of the helpful staff I need to be thankful to. Read Less
