This was our first river cruise and experience of this kind. It was an absolutely wonderful experience and the crew of the Ve was "the best"! Our cruise director Maya was terrific and could not have done more for us. For the most part, our shore excursions were great! The only negative thing was that we experienced low water and could not continue on the Danube to Vienna. We had to pack up and bus to Vienna. Viking could not have done more to make the trip great, however. With deluxe accommodations in a hotel in Vienna to side trips to see some of what we were missing. As no one can control the weather, the crew, Maya and Marco in particular did everything humanly possible to help make everything wonderful! It was a fabulous experience and one that we hope to do again in the near future. Our thanks to the entire crew of the "Ve" for their very caring attitude and kind attention to detail! We don't know if all crews on other ships are the same but the crew of the Ve were all so welcoming, kind, caring and attentive. The entire cruise left us with a thirst to see more and to repeat this experience! Read Less

We had heard good things about Viking, and the itinerary looked good. The cruise itself was certainly not cheap, but the low cost round trip airfare helped to keep the cost somewhat within reason. We also really appreciated the daily included tours. We only took the one additional cost tour to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and it was well worth it. You have to take all the included daily tours into consideration when weighing the overall value of the cruise. A HUGE plus for Viking is the number of ships they have on the rivers. You may not think this matters, but when the water levels get too low or too high, ships may not be able to continue. On our trip, the water level on the Danube was too low by the time we reached Regensburg, Germany, and they had to transfer us to a sister ship on the other side of the low water location. They did this seamlessly with just one overnight in Vienna in a suite at 5 star Hyatt hotel (1st world problems!). The next day we boarded in the same exact room on a different ship. All other cruise lines had to change to bus tours. Excellent program director Maya kept everything timely and organized!!! Can't say enough good things about her. The efficiency of your program director can make or break a trip like this, and she was energetic, efficient, and enthusiastic! We loved the small ship atmosphere. There were 186 guests, and we met a number of pleasant and interesting guests who we shared dinner and lunches with, and hopefully will stay in touch as friends. The onboard informational talks were extremely interesting in Germany and Austria, and all of the local guides were very good or excellent. I was a little disappointed that they had to close the top deck for such a long time (at least 4-5 days) on the Main due to barely squeezing under bridges. Since the water level was low, they must have to do this on every trip. The Rhine cruising was best viewed from the top deck, but when that deck is closed, the ship offers fewer places to walk and go if you want to get out of your cabin. We opted to skip the premium beverages package. It's a lot of money (overpriced in my mind), and unless you plan to seriously drink A LOT of top name wines and spirits, it is cheaper just to buy a few drinks individually. Also, you can buy wines on shore and bring them back to either dining room or cabin. Overall an excellent trip. I would highly recommend a Viking River cruise. Read Less

Although we had been on many ocean cruise this was our first river cruise. We began our journey with a 3 day pre-cruise visit to Prague before boarding our ship in Budapest. Prague was a beautiful city to visit. Before leaving home we were a little apprehensive about traveling on a smaller ship but found the intimate environment onboard the Viking ship to be great. We met lots of new friends and had an enjoyable time interacting with them both while dining and out on shore excursions. The included shore excursions for each port provided an incredible history lesson. Tour guides were excelent and in some ports there were options available depending on your particular interests. We did take an optional tours in Vienna for a Mozart concert (highly recommended) and city highlights of Salzburg. The Salzburg tour emphasis was The Sound of Music and while very interesting we felt rushed. Just needed a couple of extra free time hours to explore the city further. The ship's accommodations were great and the crew was terrific! Onboard lectures and entertainment also added value to the experience. Overall the cruise far exceeded our expectations. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the options available on tours, the lower number of passenger's, and the broad range of countries traveled. We were absolutely delighted with the friendliness, helpfulness of the varied staff. Our tour director knocked it out of the park. I honestly can't see anyone doing his job better. He was freakin awesome! How awesome..... very helpful, flexible, adaptive, informative, well organized, and ultra great sense of humor! So take the following with a grain of salt. I'm a member in a rock band. Something other than just piano and vocals would have been more attractive for evening entertainment. The gentlemen that were providing entertainment were talented and delightful. Also, the older crowd and very limited space wouldn't probably allow for a more complete music experience..in my limited perspective and humble opinion. Food was well prepared, varied, interesting. Hospitality was off the charts. Thoroughly delightful experience. This was our first trip to Europe. It was, for my wife and I, our first trip to celebrate retirement. It will always rank this trip as very memorable! Read Less

My husband and I had never been to Europe so we chose this cruise to get an overview. Our son and his wife did this cruise for their honeymoon and recommended it to us. The ship was beautiful, sleek and clean. Our cabin was clean, spacious and comfortable. The staff was courteous and friendly. By the second day, several staff members already knew our names. The food was varied and delicious for each meal. We enjoyed trying food and wine that was unique to the area and country we were visiting. The excursions gave us a unique view of the town we were in especially because our tour guides were from that specific town. There was nothing that was negative about our 15 day Grand European Cruise. We would also like to experience an ocean cruise with Viking. Our experience was so positive, we will definitely travel with Viking again. Read Less

The hotel was very uncomfortable and the included breakfasts were not very good. The beds were hard and lumpy and we had a wet bath which was terrible.I give the trip a 10 until we hit Prague then it was a 5. The boat was very attractive and very clean. The staff learned your name quickly and the service felt personal. All staff always had a smile on their face.it was a wonderful cruise. It did seem a bit crowded it was fully booked and the seating in the lounge for announcements or demonstrations was inadequate. The excursions were very well done ,on and off and transportation were handled with ease. We wanted to see the cities this cruise visited, and also Prague, which was an extension. It also offered the pre cruise time in Amsterdam. The cruise met and exceeded our expectations. The organization of all aspects of the cruise, transfers, tours, meals, etc. was amazing. Coordination and execution of embarkation, tour transportation, and debarkation was smooth and efficient. The staff, and most tour guides were professional, friendly, and efficient, and very knowledgeable. Viking Ve was clean and in tip top condition, and the cabin was comfortable and well appointed. . Entertainment was enjoyable, and fitting for the guests on board. Tours were enjoyable and educational, and were offered for various levels of mobility, which was a real plus for those who needed less strenuous sightseeing. One highlight was the Rhine tour through the castle and vineyard area, with great narration. Food and beverage were excellent, with good variety, and very good quality. Viking thought of everything! I am a consummate traveler. This Viking River Cruise was the BEST trip I have ever taken! The itinerary was fantastic, the ports and shore excursions were excellent including the tour leaders. The size of the ship was perfect. There were just enough people to meet everyone and get to know most. When it comes to our Ship, the Ve, I can not express how lovely it was. The ship and our room was kept spotless. The overall dining experience was amazing, our food was incredible, pleasantly presented and plentiful and the service was beyond compare! Everyone from the Captain on down were incredibly friendly. By the end of our cruise in Budapest, I could not imagine the staff would be actually serving an entirely new group of passengers after we disembarked. How could they treat any other group as nice they consistently treated us? They were always so eager to make every minute our experience perfect, and they succeeded! I have never experienced the level of service the entire crew provided on any tour, trip or cruise I have ever taken. Since returning home, I have been constantly reviewing the other Viking cruises (both river and ocean) to find my next adventure. For me they are the best in the industry. I would recommend this cruise to anyone who likes to travel. Read Less

We had never been on a river cruise, and had seen numerous advertisements and promotions for Viking. Many of our friends and acquaintances had traveled with Viking and almost all were very complementary in their praise of Viking's river cruises. We selected the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise - on a new Viking ship - as the most entertaining and all-encompassing itinerary in their offerings. The cruise itself was flawless: From the moment we stepped aboard the ship, every crew member seemed to be doing everything possible to make our stay and cruise as perfect and enjoyable as possible. Viking has done a great job in designing the new "Viking Longships" and the ships are very well laid-out and attractive in every detail. Recognizing that the river cruise ships are limited in size in all dimensions because of their routes, Viking has done an excellent job of utilizing every bit of space to enhance the passenger's enjoyment and comfort. We are already booked on a Viking Ocean Cruise for next year and expect that we will find the same standards and enjoyment on the Viking Ocean ship as we did on the river cruise. Read Less

Our cabin was kept very clean and tidy but the air condition was intermittent at night which caused us to sweat in the middle of the night . Porter could not get control adjusted.. Found that we needed to get to lounge early otherwise no convenient seat available. Similar story with dining room. Would have preferred assigned seating. All food was very good with lots of choices lunge had excellent liquor selection. Excursions were somewhat lacking. Some not good value for money. Gold excursion is for kids not adults and way over priced. Vienna and Prague were amazing would love to go again and spent more time there. The last hotel we stayed in before flying home was not up to standard we are used to. Mold in bathroom. I would like to see some area on ship for fitness routine. I would go again in a few years. The food was fabulous, our cabin was perfectly suited to our needs, the lounge area was beautiful and inviting, and all shore excursions were interesting and fun. Although we had to change ships mid-cruise due to repairs on the Main-Danube Canal, it was not difficult and was handled with incredible efficiency. Because of this unavoidable change, we experienced two different crews and both groups were outstanding - friendly, kind, attentive. We extended our trip with three days in Prague. Even though we were no longer on a ship, the service was still excellent. The local guides were incredible. In particular, the guide for our all-day excursion to Terezin was fantastic as she recounted the story of the place before and during World War II. We stayed the extra days in Amsterdam & had a wonderful time. I would recommend people to do this. Everything from embarkation to disembarkation went so smoothly it was incredible!! We embarked on the Ve in Amsterdam & disembarked in Budapest from the Gifjon. The ships are very clean, modern, & the cabins are roomy with all amenities one could imagine from shampoo & conditioner to lotion. The crew on the both ships were superior they all go above & beyond to take care of all of the passengers needs. Made us feel like royalty. The dining room on both ships was elegant, yet you felt at home with the staff that made sure we were enjoying your dining experience. Our wine glasses were never empty. Who could ask for anything more!!! All of the ports & excursions met all of our expectations, very well organized, & tour guides were well informed of the areas we were visiting. We are glad that there were no children on our cruise. That's what Disney is for. Our 15 day Grand European Cruise was a dream come true for us & it was a wonderful way to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We made wonderful friendships that we both know we will treasure for a long time. We are already looking forward to planning our next Viking cruise!! Read Less

My husband and I were looking for a week long cruise because he prefers not to go away from home for longer period of time. We chose the Rhine Getaway with stops in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The ship was very modern and easy to get around. Our cabin was comfortable with a great shower, but the best thing about the cabin was the service we received from the young lady who kept it clean and well supplied. The food was very good with outstanding soups. We enjoyed a tour of the kitchen as well as speaking with the chef. The Chef made Signature Pralines one night in addition to the dessert choices. We enjoyed our daily excursions which were included in the base price of the cruise. We had tours in or of the Black Forest, Colmar, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Marksburg Castle in Koblentz, Cologne, and Kinderdijk. We especially enjoyed our tour of the Chocolate Museum in Cologne which was nearby the ship. The tour in Kinderdijk was delightful seeing old windmills and going inside one. I choose this cruise for the Romance in its cities, for the history and for the wonderful charm. My husband and I celebrated our 48th and had the most amazing time. The Viking Ve is a wonderful ship with the most OUTSTANDING CREW. I would definitely book another Viking cruise. I loved the cuisine on this ship and the way it was served. I wanted for nothing. When sailing I loved sitting in the lounge having a cocktail checking my email and chatting with new people. In the evening after dinner the lounge had music and dancing. Several nights there was wonderful entertainment on board or some fun games with the staff. Maya was our Program Director and she was OUTSTANDING. We extended our tour with 2 nights in Amsterdam and she came to the aid of the group in the Okura hotel with a tour problem to the tulip gardens. She fixed the problem and she did this on HER OWN TIME. THANKS MAYA. So thanks Viking for making this an AMAZING ADVENTURE. Read Less

The cruise was smooth, the service was excellent and we could not have asked for more. We were always treated with smiles and enthusiasm. The few dietary restrictions we had were graciously accepted and provided with no difficulties. Food was delicious and varied from day to day so we never felt as though we were eating the same meal over & over. I really enjoyed having food that was related to the area in which we were traveling. It was so enjoyable to be able to take a "tour" and only have to unpack once. That in itself was a real treat. Compared to ocean cruises, this type of cruise is very laid back, yet full of activities. The food was excellent and the staff was superb and during the cruise we found out that from the captain on down, each hand pitched in wherever there was a need. The inclusion of excursions is a wonderful addition to a cruise and they were each and everyone very enlightening,, mainly because of the excellent guides at each of the ports. From an American citizen standpoint, it is hard to fathom the ages that some of these different cities and towns have been in existence. We did the Grand European River Cruise with Viking and loved every minute of it. The crew on the Viking VE were all so friendly and helpful. We did have to change ships mid way because of low water on the Danube, but Viking did an amazing job and made it all so painless. They took notes of any special requests (extra pillows, lotions, extra hangers, etc) and made sure that all these items were in your stateroom on the new ship. Friends we were traveling with left juice cans in the refridgerator on the first ship and when they got to the new ship they found the two juice cans in their refidgerator! The new ship we transfered to was the Viking Gefjon and the only complaint we all had was with the people working at the reception. They were not very friendly and there was a woman in particular that was very rude. When checking out and paying the final bill she was very rude if you did not give the recommended amount for gratuity. We felt this was uncalled for because she has no idea if we left euros in the envelopes left in the staterooms and also we gave some of the crew that we encountered on a daily basis personal gratuities. This left a bit of a sour taste to what was otherwise an amazing trip over all. We will most definately be doing another river cruise with Viking. Read Less
