Glad to land on the maiden voyage of one of Viking's vaunted long ships for this 14 day journey from Amsterdam to Budapest. Even happier to be upgraded from below decks, you know, to mid decks, perhaps because of AC problems with the original room. Whatever, am happy for the upgrade, for I spend a good third of my time watching the river go by from my French sliding doors, wide open. Another third in the bow watching the riverine world go by. Another third sleeping. The Rhine from its meeting with the North sea upstream is magnificent and not to be missed by boat, much less a luxury river cruiser with fair to decent breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Can't drink free at breakfast, but lunch and dinner, wine and beer, no problem. Nice. Kane, the program director, fantastic. Wine visits to the Wachau, done. Mineral baths in Budapest, done. Yet we were TOO often, including in Vienna, docked absolutely side by side with one or TWO other Viking ships. This was too much. The stink. The lack of light. The lack of access to the water. Nasty. Not acceptable. Amusing was when we ran aground early on in the Danube. Thank god for the local river police and a fine-looking Dutch barge captain who bailed us out. I still wonder about the fate of our poor captain. We were never told the tale of how it happened, and we should have been told. It was easy enough to imagine, however, and it is just a good thing we all were safe. We missed some excursions because of the grounding, including Passau. So I will make sure the next time I book Viking that Viking makes good on that. Read Less

We had a great cruise on Viking's new ship the Ve. The room was comfortable but a little tight. We had a small outside balcony which was adequate. The bathroom was small but very usable and the shower was great. Lighting was excellent in the room. Wifi was available in our room but was way too slow !! (satellite connection) TV was large and had decent programing including cameras in the ship. The food was good and plentiful but not very creative and rather bland to the taste. Unfortunately the only drinks that were part of the all inclusive package was WITH the meals. (pretty chincy) The shore trips were all very nice and "adequate". The use of what they call a quiet box was fantastic for the shore trips. There were numerous extra cost shore trip options. Fair amount of free time to explore on your own. We felt that the 14 day trip that spent a lot of time in Germany was just a lot of seeing the same things. All our stops were picture perfect but became monotonous! One stop in Germany for this type of trip would have been enough !! Our program director Kane was excellent and made the trip better than expected. Everybody on the crew was very friendly, gracious and helpful. I was very impressed by the consistency of their training. Too many old folks as guests though not enough of an age mix. Read Less

After numerous foreign travels by air and coach, our experience with Viking and Viking VE fully met or exceeded all expectations for comfort, meeting our diverse interests and providing an overall satisfying experience. From the moment we stepped off our plane in Amsterdam until we departed Budapest, Viking and the crew of the VE were there with friendliness, guidance and help. Our hotel in Amsterdam and accommodations on the VE were spot on what we expected from Viking and desired. The Viking VE crew was simply outstanding. Viking's attention to detail, efficiency of operations and provision for multiple options for their travelers is unsurpassed in our experience. Our satisfaction was such that we immediately signed up for another Viking cruise as soon as we got home! Read Less

The Viking Grand European cruise exceeded all of our expectations. The facilities on the ship were first class, the day tours very well organised with excellent local guides, and the ship crew and staff were the best we have experienced on any of our travels. All meals were top quality, especially the 5 course farewell dinner. Special mention goes to Kane the cruise director. He was tireless in making sure everyone on board was entertained and well informed of all activities. Also fantastic service from Edward and Maynard in the restaurant. All movements on and off the ship were effortless including the embarkation on disembarkation. Viking have these processes down to a fine art. The itinerary for this cruise has many wonderful sights, both the scenery along the rivers and the towns and cities we visited. Viking has secured its own docking facilities at several of the cities - all in prime locations. If we decide to do another river cruise Viking will definitely be our first choice. Read Less

This was our first river cruise experience and we were impressed. From the initial greeting at the airport in Amsterdam to the assistance at departure from Budapest, Viking crew and team members were extremely courteous and hospitable. They were like family and knew how to anticipate what we might need or want. Our veranda state room was well equipped with what we needed, but we found ourselves enjoying the views from the public areas of the ship in the midst of new found friends. The day excursions were guided by knowledgeable and interesting guides. The additional excursions were well worth the added costs. The food was delicious, but our favorite was the pork knuckles we ordered at the cafe in Cologne. We have fond memories if this trip and look forward to more in the future. Read Less

Having been on ocean cruises, this was by far the most enjoyable. Our suite gave us the ability to be able to sit on the veranda or sit in the living room and really enjoy being on the ship in our rooms. The Activity Director certainly had his work well planned and made the shore excursions very enjoyable and informative. It was so nice to have every passenger able to sit down at the same time to enjoy dinner In the dining room. Th/de on ship entertainment was very enjoyable and of great interest as to what location we were in so we had a little experience of their culture. The fact that there were off ship events planned each day made the trip so very enjoyable and we got an idea of just how the area was. Having spent pre days in Amsterdam really gave us an idea of life in that city. In hind sight was wishing we had spent extra days in Budapest also. Our onboard experience with the personnel was beyond expectations with the exception of the concierge and it seemed like he was new to the job and was uncertain about things off ship and he was very hard to understand. I have been extolling the trip to everyone who asks about my adventure. Currently I am planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand in Nov. of 2016 and will be looking to see if Viking offers anything we might be able to take advantage of. Read Less

Our crew from the Viking VE was simply great. Whenever, there was any type of change to the itinerary, it was in addition to & I considered it an upgrade. We were one of the ships that was caught up in the low water problems. Our cruise director, Kane, carried us through that transition without a glitch what-so-ever. I felt it was giving us more for our money, not less. We were able to bus through the countryside and never missed any of the scheduled tours. Great Job. All the shore excursion were very informative. The extension hotel in Amsterdam was so very convenient to public transportation that we explored the outskirts easily. The food, the cabins all of the common areas and our staff were simply wonderful. They catered to us from the time we landed in Budapest until we went through out gate to depart in Amsterdam. I watched as they helped with someone who lost their passport, prepared special food for special diets, furnished refreshment at the door when we returned from a hot tiring tour, furnished umbrellas for those who needed one and blankets if we wanted to sit outside when it was chilly. I will definitely travel Viking again. Read Less

We sailed the four rivers of Europe from Amsterdam to Budapest. The newly christened ship was gorgeous and the staff was fantastic. Kane, the cruise director was phenomenal with a wealth of information and extremely hospitable. We had a balcony cabin which was worth the money and provided us days of beautiful scenic viewing. The food was superb and the wait staff was spectacular. We can't say enough about this journey. There was a complication of the Mein River was low as it has been that way for a few weeks so they bused us from Nuremberg to Passau - a 2 1/2 hour trip. We boarded the sister ship Gefjon and had the same cabin. Kane stayed with us and the cre was equally as good. Because of the complication Viking provided us with a free concert in Vienna - Mozart and Strauss. Just spectacular. Stops were great to include Melk, Kinderdjik, Cologne, Miktenberg etc. Viking has 35 ships and 250 buses so they are well prepared for low water levels and provided excellent tours in each stop with wonderful guides. Cabins are equipped with American and European electrical outlets. Read Less

Well organised cruise. Fully informed of all tours offered which were included in the cost plus optionals. Friendly efficient staff who went beyond their role descriptions to make sure clients needs were met - no request was too much trouble. We were on one of the cruises that unfortunately was affected by low was levels on the Danube. The only inconvenience for us was packing our bags half way through the cruise. Viking were very well organised and moved us to our new ship while we went on our tour for the day. Our new ship was identical to the original one. Same confugiration, just a different name and different staff with the exception of our Cruise a Director and Tour Director. This move must have been a logistic nightmare for Viking but only a slight inconvenience for us. Of course some people were not happy but that's the perils of travel, some time things don't always go to plan. Overall food and service was excellent. Service did vary between the two ships but it was still good. Viking compensated us for the inconvenience by paying for us to attend a concert in Vienna. For us that was lovely as we were initially not going to attend this optional extra but were so pleased we did. The cruise was probably not as relaxing as we had thought it would be only because we did all the tours which were included in each port, plus some optional extras. Walking on European cobblestone is a killer. We also caught the bug that went through the ship as well which slowed us down for a couple of days. Mainly Americans, few Canadians, couple of New Zealanders, 8 Aussies. Lovely way to see European towns from a different perspective. Read Less

We had an absolutely splendid time on our 1st River Cruise. It was everything and more than we had hoped for. We started on the Ve & due to the low water finished our trip on the Gefjon. The transfer from one to the other was painless. Each day we enjoyed breathtaking scenery on & off the ship. We were kept abreast of each & every thing that pertained to us during the trip. Every evening the Program Director filled us with details for the following day. Meals were 5 Star. The guides for the excursions were excellent. All were very knowledgeable & proud to share (with a touch of humor) their city with us. Entertainment was brought on board, the chef gave an Apple Strudel making demonstration, we had a glass blowing demonstration as well as informative talks to teach us about windmills & locks & being a captain. We were even given a crash course in German to make our time on shore easier. The staff were super friendly & all you had to do was ask & they would go above & beyond for you. We loved our room - the balcony was well worth it. This trip certainly left us wanting more. Thanks Viking. :-) Read Less

This trip ended up as a second class trip in many ways and did not meet the standards of Viking's advertising. Due to water levels (which Viking knew of for weeks, but didn't tell us until the night before it effected us) 3 days of the trip ended up being a bus tour -- with 3 hour bus trips each day (and needing to leave and meet up at very specific times, unable to explore the cities on our own time). We had a ship change, so had experience on two ships; one of the ships had "OK" food; the other one had very inconsistent, frequently bad, food, and poor service. The wine quality was very mediocre at best. Overall this was a very second class, or even third class experience priced as a first class trip. Read Less

We are very glad we took a two week cruise to have more time to unwind and relax. Enjoyed meeting the other passengers on board, but it was the staff that made us feel very special which made for a most enjoyable cruise. The chef met with me every morning with the day's menus to discuss my dietary issues. He made me feel that it was a privilege for him to be able to cook for me and all the meals were delicious. All of the staff were very courteous and pleasant. The cabin provided plenty of space and amenities - comfortable bed, full length sliding door to view the river bank, plenty of bathroom space and storage space to unpack. The excursions were well planned and the guides most knowledgable and pleasant. My only disappointment was not hearing the Vienna Choir Boys, but our concert in Vienna was great. Our program director was very personable and knowledgeable and brought such energy to our tours. We recommend Viking to anyone thinking about river cruising and The Grand European Tour in particular. We had to change ships (VE to Gefyon) in the middle of the cruise due to water levels. The ports of call were great and the tour guide knowledge and courtesy were exceptional. Half of them had never been on a river cruise and months later we're still hearing about how wonderful it was. The tours were so great and the tour guides were exceptional. I learned so much about Germany. especially. The River was low so we had to switch boats and the staff made it seamless. Our cruise director, Kane, was the best. He was entertaining, informative, multi-talented and an amazing photographer. We played fun trivia games in the evening - and he knew his music, theater and history. We had very good quality entertainment onboard and also groups that came onboard like various, musicians, a glass-blower, economic educators and historians. Excellent! We did the Grand European River Cruise with Viking and loved every minute of it. The crew on the Viking VE were all so friendly and helpful. We did have to change ships mid way because of low water on the Danube, but Viking did an amazing job and made it all so painless. They took notes of any special requests (extra pillows, lotions, extra hangers, etc) and made sure that all these items were in your stateroom on the new ship. Friends we were traveling with left juice cans in the refridgerator on the first ship and when they got to the new ship they found the two juice cans in their refidgerator! The new ship we transfered to was the Viking Gefjon and the only complaint we all had was with the people working at the reception. They were not very friendly and there was a woman in particular that was very rude. When checking out and paying the final bill she was very rude if you did not give the recommended amount for gratuity. We felt this was uncalled for because she has no idea if we left euros in the envelopes left in the staterooms and also we gave some of the crew that we encountered on a daily basis personal gratuities. This left a bit of a sour taste to what was otherwise an amazing trip over all. We will most definately be doing another river cruise with Viking. Read Less

The food servers were wonderful and the meals were fantastic. We participated in and musical guessing game and won a bottle of wine. I am handicapped and was treated with genuine care and concern. We brought a travel wheelchair along and it didn't work very well on the cobblestone streets so our wonderful concierge let us use a wheelchair that was on board and worked much better because it had larger tires. I would like to particularly mention a couple of people who made our trip so much more enjoyable: Carl, the Cruise Director, Bili, the Concierge, and two of the servers Norman and Robert who were both so special. Our cruise was amazing, we did not have to change ships due to low water levels, which apparently is the norm. The ports we visited on our way to BudaPest were amazing, the excursions were all well done. I liked the headphones we used on excursions, you could always hear the guide without having to bunch around them. Compared to ocean cruises, this type of cruise is very laid back, yet full of activities. The food was excellent and the staff was superb and during the cruise we found out that from the captain on down, each hand pitched in wherever there was a need. The inclusion of excursions is a wonderful addition to a cruise and they were each and everyone very enlightening,, mainly because of the excellent guides at each of the ports. From an American citizen standpoint, it is hard to fathom the ages that some of these different cities and towns have been in existence. The complimentary choice of wines or soft drinks at dinner or lunch is a nice perk. We would greatly recommend this type of cruise and we are looking forward to another one in the near future. The Viking Ve is a wonderful ship with the most OUTSTANDING CREW. I would definitely book another Viking cruise. I loved the cuisine on this ship and the way it was served. I wanted for nothing. When sailing I loved sitting in the lounge having a cocktail checking my email and chatting with new people. In the evening after dinner the lounge had music and dancing. Several nights there was wonderful entertainment on board or some fun games with the staff. Maya was our Program Director and she was OUTSTANDING. We extended our tour with 2 nights in Amsterdam and she came to the aid of the group in the Okura hotel with a tour problem to the tulip gardens. My husband and I were looking for a week long cruise because he prefers not to go away from home for longer period of time. We chose the Rhine Getaway with stops in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The ship was very modern and easy to get around. Our cabin was comfortable with a great shower, but the best thing about the cabin was the service we received from the young lady who kept it clean and well supplied. The food was very good with outstanding soups. We enjoyed a tour of the kitchen as well as speaking with the chef. The Chef made Signature Pralines one night in addition to the dessert choices. We enjoyed our daily excursions which were included in the base price of the cruise. We had tours in or of the Black Forest, Colmar, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Marksburg Castle in Koblentz, Cologne, and Kinderdijk. We especially enjoyed our tour of the Chocolate Museum in Cologne which was nearby the ship. The tour in Kinderdijk was delightful seeing old windmills and going inside one. Our tour director seemed to have boundless energy and kept us very well informed. She could always answer questions and was constantly snapping photos of the visitors and places we toured.
