We chose Viking because of recommendations from several friends. From the moment we boarded the ship until the time we disembarked two weeks later, we were treated like royalty. The food was fabulous, our cabin was perfectly suited to our needs, the lounge area was beautiful and inviting, and all shore excursions were interesting and fun. Although we had to change ships mid-cruise due to repairs on the Main-Danube Canal, it was not difficult and was handled with incredible efficiency. Because of this unavoidable change, we experienced two different crews and both groups were outstanding - friendly, kind, attentive. We extended our trip with three days in Prague. Even though we were no longer on a ship, the service was still excellent. The local guides were incredible. In particular, the guide for our all-day excursion to Terezin was fantastic as she recounted the story of the place before and during World War II. We look forward to doing another river cruise to explore a different area of Europe. Read Less

The ship was quiet and clean. The food was very good, but breakfast was mostly the same selection of hot and cold foods and THE SAME pastries EVERY DAY, which got very boring. We missed not having access to self serve laundry features, such as an ironing board. Thankfully, the dress code was very informal and relaxing. Bottled water was always in your room, and also handed out on the way to every excursion. The staff was very hard working and friendly. One odd thing of noticable difference from ocean cruises, was the lack of available snacks between meals. There were self service cookies and hot drinks available, but no pizza or other "proteins". Then, the cookies were taken away over an hour before dinner. Dinner was served at 7. So, You had to keep your refrigerator stocked with cheese, fruit, etc. from the breakfast buffet. It was just odd, and rather disconnected. Then, out of the blue, they served a wisp of canapes and a few themed drinks at about four of the afternoon briefings. Those essences of cordiality were nice. Too bad they were so inconsistent. The shore excursions were adequate, but on tight schedules, loaded with random trivia, and lacking of much free time. The one activity that got old, was having to sit through a daily briefing before dinner each night about the following day's activities. If you didn't go, you could turn it on in your room on the TV. But, it was 30-45 minutes that just cut out any chance of some down time before dinner, when it would have been nice to enjoy a shower and or some quiet time on the balcony. Since they had the meetings, they didn't bother to put any details in the daily newsletter, which was mostly useless. The director's name was Kane. He was very thorough with details, accommodating, and a personable "propogandist". But, the daily briefings became referred to as "The Kane Show" by the fourth day. He was pleasant, but it just got to be too much of an elaborate yet average ordenance of details that could have been handed out in printed form. These are just minor frustrated perspectives. Go on a Viking river cruise! The sites are amazing, and the company and crew make a solid effort to make you feel like important guests. Read Less

We stayed the extra days in Amsterdam & had a wonderful time. I would recommend people to do this. Everything from embarkation to disembarkation went so smoothly it was incredible!! We embarked on the Ve in Amsterdam & disembarked in Budapest from the Gifjon. The ships are very clean, modern, & the cabins are roomy with all amenities one could imagine from shampoo & conditioner to lotion. The crew on the both ships were superior they all go above & beyond to take care of all of the passengers needs. Made us feel like royalty. The dining room on both ships was elegant, yet you felt at home with the staff that made sure we were enjoying your dining experience. Our wine glasses were never empty. Who could ask for anything more!!! All of the ports & excursions met all of our expectations, very well organized, & tour guides were well informed of the areas we were visiting. We are glad that there were no children on our cruise. That's what Disney is for. Our 15 day Grand European Cruise was a dream come true for us & it was a wonderful way to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We made wonderful friendships that we both know we will treasure for a long time. We are already looking forward to planning our next Viking cruise!! Read Less

Excellent cruise. Having never been on a river cruise, but been on many ocean cruises I was unprepared for the excellent service given us by Alex the head waiter all the rest of the staff. Also, while there was little activity on the ship, there was comfortable lounge to meet other travelers and daily jaunts ashore to keep you busy. Food was good, service was great, room was comfortable (while a little small) and kept quite clean and serviced. While the guests were wonderful, if you are young you might find them a little on the senior side (average age was about 65). Viking certainly tries (and does a great job) to keep their guests happy!! We had a veranda room, but the balcony rooms sported a very small balcony. We loved our veranda as we could open the sliding door and feel like we were outside while sitting on the bed! Read Less

We were equally impressed with our stateroom as we were in the Explorer Suite we did not know what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised and pleased. All I ca say about the food is WONDERFUL! The dining atmosphere was equally enjoyable and as far as our servers well, Mila, Zoli, Glenn, Kane, Julian were so good we wanted to take them home with us. Pleasant, Funny, on top of everything. Just great. Activities, service, and keeping the cruise interesting was a great experience and everyone did a great job. They made us feel that we were in our own living rooms, at least that is the way Fred and I felt. As for the tours, we got to see everything he had hoped to see and much more. Would we go again, yes we are looking at two more trip for next year. Read Less

My husband and I were looking for a week long cruise because he prefers not to go away from home for longer period of time. We chose the Rhine Getaway with stops in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The ship was very modern and easy to get around. Our cabin was comfortable with a great shower, but the best thing about the cabin was the service we received from the young lady who kept it clean and well supplied. The food was very good with outstanding soups. We enjoyed a tour of the kitchen as well as speaking with the chef. The Chef made Signature Pralines one night in addition to the dessert choices. We enjoyed our daily excursions which were included in the base price of the cruise. We had tours in or of the Black Forest, Colmar, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Marksburg Castle in Koblentz, Cologne, and Kinderdijk. We especially enjoyed our tour of the Chocolate Museum in Cologne which was nearby the ship. The tour in Kinderdijk was delightful seeing old windmills and going inside one. Our tour director seemed to have boundless energy and kept us very well informed. She could always answer questions and was constantly snapping photos of the visitors and places we toured. This was our second Viking River Cruise and we hope to take another one in the future. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I had always wanted to see the Rhine River. Our travel agent recommended Viking and made most of the arrangements for us. We were on the Viking Ve and left Basel on Friday, April 15 and sailed to Amsterdam. Our embarkation was very smooth. Viking picked us up at the airport in a nice tour bus and took us directly to the boat, handled all our luggage and made everything very easy. We had flown from Atlanta all night and were exhausted when we got to Basel. We were met on the boat by staff with warm, moist towels and taken to the dining room where we were offered coffee and breakfast. All the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Our room was already ready so we were taken there and staff showed us everything in the room, lights, etc. The cabin was clean and very nice.Sitting room was well equipped, the bathroom was a decent size and the veranda was wonderful. The veranda wasn't very big but did hold 2 chairs and a side table. We enjoyed sitting out there during our cruise. The ship wasn't too big which was nice. It was very clean, comfortable and everything was easy to find, and if you couldn't find something, the staff was always there to help. We ate every meal in the dining room. We met two excellent servers our first meal on the ship, Glen and Zoli, and we stayed with them the entire trip. They were very conscientious, great servers and both had great personalities which kept us entertained for all our meals. The food was always good and presentation excellent. If we didn't like something, our servers would happily bring something else for us to try. We enjoyed the omelet making station in the morning. Our least favorite meal was German night. We tried the different foods and the schnapps but not our favorite. My friend and I went to a couple of the game activities at night and enjoyed them. It was a good way to meet new people as there were not a lot of people there. Service on the boat was excellent. We had no complaints about anything of this nature. All we had to do was ask and it was done, from our servers to the young man who cleaned our cabin. We went on all the included excursions and enjoyed them. We did not take any of the optional excursions and as I stated above ate all our meals on the ship. My favorite excursion was the Black Forest trip and also the windmills. It was fun to see the countryside. It was just my friend and I traveling together, no children. Never saw any children on this trip but can't imagine children enjoying this cruise. Mostly older travelers. The disembarkation in Amsterdam went very smoothly. We signed up for the optional 2 days at Hotel Okura in Amsterdam and enjoyed the hotel and city. It would love to go on another Viking Cruise, maybe the Danube next time. Also would love to the Mediterranean cruise to Venice. Read Less

I loved the waitress at our table each night as well. She was fun and very entertaining each night. I also enjoyed the food from each area we visited on the menus. The morning continental breakfast was a little sparse and might include a few more items. The only tour guide I was not very impressed with was the guide in Strasbourg. He was so hard to understand and rushed us through the tour (although it was raining at the time). The tours were in first class buses which we enjoyed the short trips to each area. I loved the tours being included in the price of the trip as well as the drinks included. We met likeminded folks during our trip and still stay in touch to this day. We plan to visit them in California sometime in the future! Read Less

I choose this cruise for the Romance in its cities, for the history and for the wonderful charm. My husband and I celebrated our 48th and had the most amazing time. The Viking Ve is a wonderful ship with the most OUTSTANDING CREW. I would definitely book another Viking cruise. I loved the cuisine on this ship and the way it was served. I wanted for nothing. When sailing I loved sitting in the lounge having a cocktail checking my email and chatting with new people. In the evening after dinner the lounge had music and dancing. Several nights there was wonderful entertainment on board or some fun games with the staff. Maya was our Program Director and she was OUTSTANDING. We extended our tour with 2 nights in Amsterdam and she came to the aid of the group in the Okura hotel with a tour problem to the tulip gardens. She fixed the problem and she did this on HER OWN TIME. THANKS MAYA. So thanks Viking for making this an AMAZING ADVENTURE. Read Less

We have friends who have been on a Viking River Cruise and they said remarkable things about their cruise. We have wanted to go on a cruise and see Europe, so what better way. The cruise was smooth, the service was excellent and we could not have asked for more. We were always treated with smiles and enthusiasm. The few dietary restrictions we had were graciously accepted and provided with no difficulties. Food was delicious and varied from day to day so we never felt as though we were eating the same meal over & over. I really enjoyed having food that was related to the area in which we were traveling. It was so enjoyable to be able to take a "tour" and only have to unpack once. That in itself was a real treat. We chose a room with a veranda and will do it again. Being able to sit outside on the veranda and watch the scenery, while enjoying a glass of wine, was fantastic. There was nothing I would change. We had friends planning this and they invited us along. Probably the best trip we have ever taken. Everything from being met at the airport by Viking reps to the great hotel in Amsterdam, the quality of the cruise - food, accommodations, staff, and activities, our stay in Basel, was FABULOUS!!! We really were very impressed by how well taken care of we felt throughout. We enjoyed the variety of food options on the ship, along with the service of the staff. Without a doubt, everything was very high quality and our needs were well attended to. There were 8 of us traveling together and all had a great time. We have done three ocean cruises and found the river cruise to be so much more enjoyable. We would definitely travel again with Viking and have been telling everyone we know about it - even some we didn't know. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Read Less

We had never done a river cruise and the Rhine River sounded like a special type of trip. Until than we had always done ocean cruises. The experience was great. Compared to ocean cruises, this type of cruise is very laid back, yet full of activities. The food was excellent and the staff was superb and during the cruise we found out that from the captain on down, each hand pitched in wherever there was a need. The inclusion of excursions is a wonderful addition to a cruise and they were each and everyone very enlightening,, mainly because of the excellent guides at each of the ports. From an American citizen standpoint, it is hard to fathom the ages that some of these different cities and towns have been in existence. The complimentary choice of wines or soft drinks at dinner or lunch is a nice perk. We would greatly recommend this type of cruise and we are looking forward to another one in the near future. We spent three extra days in Amsterdam, which I highly recommend. There is so much to see in Amsterdam you need that time. Also the people of Amsterdam are very friendly and everyone speaks english! We stayed at the Radisson Blu, which is very nice and well located for exploring the city center. We were scheduled for the Gefjon, but were changed to the Ve instead. Our cruise was amazing, we did not have to change ships due to low water levels, which apparently is the norm. The ports we visited on our way to BudaPest were amazing, the excursions were all well done. I liked the headphones we used on excursions, you could always hear the guide without having to bunch around them. The ship was new, clean, the staterooms were very comfortable, the food was also very good. They had a variety of speakers in the evening, one night was a master glass blower, another were local musicians. The staff were awesome, helpful and friendly. We especially liked our "fun director" Carl. He was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. It was an overall great experience that I would recommend to everyone. Read Less

We have never had such a magical experience. From the Concierge to the room cleaners they were all wonderful. The ports of call were fantastic even though the weather didn't cooperate. The food servers were wonderful and the meals were fantastic. We participated in and musical guessing game and won a bottle of wine. I am handicapped and was treated with genuine care and concern. We brought a travel wheelchair along and it didn't work very well on the cobblestone streets so our wonderful concierge let us use a wheelchair that was on board and worked much better because it had larger tires. I would like to particularly mention a couple of people who made our trip so much more enjoyable: Carl, the Cruise Director, Bili, the Concierge, and two of the servers Norman and Robert who were both so special. We hope that some day we will be able to cruise with Viking again. Thank you for an unforgettable time Read Less

However we were delighted with every aspect of the cruise from the ambiance, the food, the staff, the entertainment including the more cerebral opportunities such as the lecture on German history and about Bavarian history. The ports of call were great and the tour guide knowledge and courtesy were exceptional. Half of them had never been on a river cruise and months later we're still hearing about how wonderful it was. The tours were so great and the tour guides were exceptional. I learned so much about Germany. especially. The River was low so we had to switch boats and the staff made it seamless. Our cruise director, Kane, was the best. He was entertaining, informative, multi-talented and an amazing photographer. We played fun trivia games in the evening - and he knew his music, theater and history. We did the Grand European River Cruise with Viking and loved every minute of it. The crew on the Viking VE were all so friendly and helpful. We did have to change ships mid way because of low water on the Danube, but Viking did an amazing job and made it all so painless. They took notes of any special requests (extra pillows, lotions, extra hangers, etc) and made sure that all these items were in your stateroom on the new ship. Friends we were traveling with left juice cans in the refridgerator on the first ship and when they got to the new ship they found the two juice cans in their refidgerator! The new ship we transfered to was the Viking Gefjon and the only complaint we all had was with the people working at the reception. They were not very friendly and there was a woman in particular that was very rude. When checking out and paying the final bill she was very rude if you did not give the recommended amount for gratuity. We felt this was uncalled for because she has no idea if we left euros in the envelopes left in the staterooms and also we gave some of the crew that we encountered on a daily basis personal gratuities. This left a bit of a sour taste to what was otherwise an amazing trip over all. We will most definately be doing another river cruise with Viking. Read Less

We are very glad we took a two week cruise to have more time to unwind and relax. Enjoyed meeting the other passengers on board, but it was the staff that made us feel very special which made for a most enjoyable cruise. The chef met with me every morning with the day's menus to discuss my dietary issues. He made me feel that it was a privilege for him to be able to cook for me and all the meals were delicious. All of the staff were very courteous and pleasant. The cabin provided plenty of space and amenities - comfortable bed, full length sliding door to view the river bank, plenty of bathroom space and storage space to unpack. The excursions were well planned and the guides most knowledgable and pleasant. My only disappointment was not hearing the Vienna Choir Boys, but our concert in Vienna was great. Our program director was very personable and knowledgeable and brought such energy to our tours. We recommend Viking to anyone thinking about river cruising and The Grand European Tour in particular. This trip ended up as a second class trip in many ways and did not meet the standards of Viking's advertising. Due to water levels (which Viking knew of for weeks, but didn't tell us until the night before it effected us) 3 days of the trip ended up being a bus tour -- with 3 hour bus trips each day (and needing to leave and meet up at very specific times, unable to explore the cities on our own time). We had a ship change, so had experience on two ships; one of the ships had "OK" food; the other one had very inconsistent, frequently bad, food, and poor service. The wine quality was very mediocre at best. Overall this was a very second class, or even third class experience priced as a first class trip. Read Less

The transfer from one to the other was painless. Each day we enjoyed breathtaking scenery on & off the ship. We were kept abreast of each & every thing that pertained to us during the trip. Every evening the Program Director filled us with details for the following day. Meals were 5 Star. The guides for the excursions were excellent. All were very knowledgeable & proud to share (with a touch of humor) their city with us. Entertainment was brought on board, the chef gave an Apple Strudel making demonstration, we had a glass blowing demonstration as well as informative talks to teach us about windmills & locks & being a captain. We were even given a crash course in German to make our time on shore easier. The staff were super friendly & all you had to do was ask & they would go above & beyond for you. Well organised cruise. Fully informed of all tours offered which were included in the cost plus optionals. Friendly efficient staff who went beyond their role descriptions to make sure clients needs were met - no request was too much trouble. We were on one of the cruises that unfortunately was affected by low was levels on the Danube. The only inconvenience for us was packing our bags half way through the cruise. Viking were very well organised and moved us to our new ship while we went on our tour for the day. Our new ship was identical to the original one. Same confugiration, just a different name and different staff with the exception of our Cruise a Director and Tour Director. This move must have been a logistic nightmare for Viking but only a slight inconvenience for us. Of course some people were not happy but that's the perils of travel, some time things don't always go to plan. Overall food and service was excellent. Service did vary between the two ships but it was still good. Viking compensated us for the inconvenience by paying for us to attend a concert in Vienna. For us that was lovely as we were initially not going to attend this optional extra but were so pleased we did. The cruise was probably not as relaxing as we had thought it would be only because we did all the tours which were included in each port, plus some optional extras. Walking on European cobblestone is a killer. We also caught the bug that went through the ship as well which slowed us down for a couple of days. Mainly Americans, few Canadians, couple of New Zealanders, 8 Aussies. Lovely way to see European towns from a different perspective. Read Less
