Interested in going to Vietnam and Cambodia to experience the culture, history, people and the food. While I knew it would be hot, I was not prepared for the humidity. The humidity permeated everything, even the air conditioned rooms. We chose Viking because we have cruised with them 6 previous times This was a combination land and river cruise. All of the hotels were Outstanding! The ship was a disappointment. The crew, food, and service was excellent but the ship was too small. Dining was cramped and our cabin was the largest on the ship but small compared to other Viking river boats. Our tour director, Tony, who was with us the entire trip was the best we have ever had. He made the trip! He I would recommend the trip because of the destinations and shore excursions ( especially Hanoi, Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh, Saigon). However, I would not do it again unlike other trips (Egypt, China, Russia etc) that I would do again. Read Less

This was a wonderful journey, part land tour and part cruise with a company, Viking, that we've come to trust and enjoy. We started in Hanoi, a group of 54 people. We were divided into two groups with each of us having an escort for the complete journey. Our escort was from Saigon (the other from Hanoi) and I very much appreciated his frankness and being able to fill in the gaps when talking about the history of Viet Nam and Cambodia. To start, the hotels Viking uses are 5+ star accommodations, from old classic hotel in Hanoi, to a resort in Siem Reap Cambodia, to modern resort in Ha Long Bay, to ultra modern high rise hotel in Saigon. The excursions in Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Siem Reap (Ankor Wat) was very well organized and very educational. We did the elephant ride among the temples in Siem Reap on our own and would recommend it. The air flight from Hanoi to Siem Reap was on a new Airbus A321; airport terminals were nice and modern. We had a 3.5 hour bus ride from Siem Reap to the Mekong river port to pick up the Viking Mekong riverboat. It is much shorter than their riverboats in Europe, but there are only 26 staterooms on the boat anyway, so it's much more intimate. The first thing that impresses you is the mahogany wood trim and finish all over the boat. The staterooms are slightly smaller that European boats, but all had a queen/king size bed. Each stateroom opens onto an exterior passageway large enough for a couple of chairs and small table to sit and enjoy the river sights. The food was typical Viking, excellent, with many local and standard choices every day. The riverboat only travels during the day (anchor in the river at night except in Phnom Penh where it's tied up, so you're always able to see river sights everyday. We got to our excursions on the river via large sampans which was exciting. Our escorts presented several lectures on the life and history of Viet Nam/Cambodia which were very well done. Viking had a couple of local groups come aboard for entertainment after dinner which was well presented. The bus ride at the end of the river portion into Saigon took us to the Cu Chi tunnels first which was very educational. We had two nights in Saigon at The Reverie, a wildly luxurious hotel, that was included in the basic Viking journey. We wish we had stayed longer. The whole journey including the embarkation and debarkation were effortless; Viking takes care of it all. I strongly recommend this trip and arriving in your departure city (either Hanoi or Saigon) a couple of days early to adjust to time differentials. Read Less

Expect the days to be HOT and humid at each port you visit. If you can stand the heat and like to sweat, then you'll have a great time. I enjoyed the food offered on the ship, the chefs had nightly special, that gave you a chance to try foods that you wouldn't have a chance to enjoy otherwise. The crew couldn't have been more helpful, from keeping the room clean, deck dry, and even cleaning your shoes after coming back from shore excursions. The entertainment on board the ship was limited, except they showed several movies about the area, which help you gained a better understand of their culture and customs. Enjoyed visiting villages, palaces, temples, and homes while on the cruse. Took the pre-excursion to Bangkok, Thailand and was glade that I did. Bangkok is truly a colorful city to visit and their temples have the WOW factor that you just can't miss if you want an enjoyable vacation in Asia. Read Less

We chose this cruise because I have always wanted to return to Vietnam after servicing there in 1970-71. Being able to visit Cambodia and Thailand were added benefits that provided a very unexpected and memorable experience. Our first night destination was Hanoi which proved to be a very nice experience. The Sofitel Legend Metropole was beautiful and the service and restaurant were outstanding. The next morning we departed the hotel on the additional trip to Ha Long Bay. We experienced beautiful scenery, a fun trip on a junk with a nice lunch and a trip to a cavern that was a total surprise. Then we were delivered to our hotel by boat. The Vinpearl Hotel was luxurious and welcoming on its own private island. The next morning we visited a cultured pearl farm and learned about the technique and method used to culture a pearl. Then we were off back to Hanoi. We enjoyed and felt safe going out at night to walk through the city to enjoy all of the weekend festivities around the lake. Our next adventure was to fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Visiting the many temples was unbelievable. The pictures you see just don't do them justice. The tour guides, both Viking and local for the entire trip were very knowledgeable and entertaining. After many memorable experiences on land we embarked the Viking Mekong. The ship was beautiful on board (not much to look at from shore). Stateroom was very nice and comfortable, food on board was the highest of quality and the service provided made us feel like we were the only people on board. Perfect! As mentioned earlier our guides were absolutely amazing. The care and concern for our well being was far beyond our expectations. We we got to Saigon our guide, Smiley arranged for me to visit the village in Vietnam that I worked in during the war. The day was a day I will treasure the rest of my life. I felt very proud of what we accomplished and the progress that had been made since 1971. All of the hotels, restaurants and excursions were the best of the best! Handling of luggage and moving us from place to place was perfectly executed. I would make this trip again and again. Read Less

We had been on trips with Viking before and met people that highly recommended this cruise. We were not disappointed! This was our fourth Viking cruise and all have been great, but we think this one was the best yet. The service, food, and guides were amazing. We already loved Viking and didn't think they could do better, but they did. The guides were with us through out and all had wonderful stories and history to tell. One of our local guides in Cambodia lived through the Khmer Rouge era, and we also got to meet a gentleman that survived a brutal time in a prison there. We toured small villages and children and adults came out to greet us. The heat and humidity was tough at times, but our guides always had plenty of water for us and they were very attentive to our needs by asking how we were feeling. The ships crew was very friendly and eager to help as well. I would love to go on this cruise again! Read Less

Wanted to see and learn about viet nam. Could not do it in a better fashion than a vrc. It was outstanding from a historic, cultural and shopping point of view. Returned home being much more knowledgeable about vietnam and throughly enjoyed the trip. The tour guide was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the history and was honest in his assessment. Service on board was great as usual with the quality of food being outstanding! The land portion was well organized and the hotels were first class. most of the land excursions were of interest but not all of them. However the balance was great. The captain was always present and interacted with the passangers which made the atmosphere much more friendly. We have certainly cultivated new friends as a result. I would strongly recommend this one to friends who want to do something different and learn a lot about a country rich in history. Read Less

Choose Viking for thismcruise because we had previously traveled with them and had an emergency which they handled beautifully. Know they would be able to handle any possible problem that might come up. Our group leader, Lee, was informed, helpful, so willing to share insights of growing up in the area. For the most part, very good local guides. Loved the itinerary as we saw villages and off the beaten track areas, local businesses as well as had time to explore the larger cities on our own. Plenty of time for, shopping but not too much. No expensive add on excursions. Had opportunities to eat local foods, excellent onboard and off educational programs on history, culture, etc. Ship is out of an Agatha Christie novel, beautiful Mahoney, so well cared for. Each cabin had a small outside area. Staff is AMAZING. So well trained, pleasant, willing to,share their experiences and plans. Excellent food with variety as expected. Very nice and varied land accommodations. The only snafu was booking through a third party who did not let us know the problems we would face once we left the Viking itinerary. Got dropped like a hot potatoe, despite all of Lee's efforts. Didn't know we had to reserve our own room for,the first night, didn't know we had to arrange our own transport from airport to hotel by arriving one day early. That really was a mess. Long story. At the end of the tour we continued o our own, again not transfers, help. Etc. if Viking is not going to provide the transfers for independent add on travel, they should pay for the, or refund that portion of the trip. Read Less

Friends recommended Viking and we both wanted to cruise the Mekong. The trip was made infinitely more enjoyable due to the two tour directors - Kong and Lee - they were exceptional at every turn. Additionally, our local guides were also excellent - knowledgeable and very personable. A further part of the trip that made it enjoyable was the other passengers we made friends with - definitely a plus, although not within the control of Viking. My wife had some concerns before the trip as to the food on board as well as during field trips. She was very pleasantly surprised with the excellent meals we had on board, as there were "Western Food" choices at every meal that satisfied her needs. The support staff on the boat were also excellent - friendly and efficient - knew our names after one day. A further highlight of the trip was the hotels we stayed in - absolutely mindblowing, particularly the Reverie in Saigon - possibly the most opulent hotel we have ever stayed in. Shore excursions were always on time, and beautifully organised... local guides very knowledgeable and each entertaining in their own way. Weather was spectacular - never rained during our on shore activity - weather was controlled by Kong! Based on this trip, we will definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

The cruise was excellent from start to the end. Our Guide received us at the Ho chi Minh City Airport and stayed with us to the end. It was a small intimate ship where we got to know all the fellow passengers. The cabin was adequate and very well appointed considering the small size of the ship. The crew of the ship made every effort to cater to each passenger and their special needs with a smile. The shore excursions were planned and conducted by experienced guides who had intimate knowledge of the history and the culture of the places and loved to share it with us. The choice of hotels for this cruise vacation were also great, which included really the most luxurious hotels located conveniently near the city centers. Me and my wife had a great experience and I would really recommend it to any one who is looking for an extra-ordinary cruise vacation. Read Less

This was our seventh Viking river cruise and 4 months later we still say it was our best ever. We started in Ho Chi Min City, ended in Hanoi and included the Ha Long Bay extension. All the hotels were excellent but we really loved the Hanoi Metropole. We know to expect a perfect balance of comfort, good food and culture with Viking but the people we met on this trip made this a unique experience. I have to mention our excellent programme director, Henry and also Ut who accompanied us to Ha Long Bay. They worked brilliantly together. I can't mention individuals without mentioning the Cambodian guides we had, Mao, Sky and Sim. We really felt we were learning about their culture and way of life. All excursions were included and all added something different. I lost count of the number of different means of transport we used. The optional excursion to the Viking sponsored school was a highlight for us. Not many people went on this because it was a very hot day and we had had a busy morning but I highly recommend it. The children showed us around their school and village. The cabins are not as well-designed as the European ones. The boat is also smaller but this meant we got to know the mainly Cambodian crew really well, adding to the cultural experience. I could go into a lot more detail but I would find it difficult to know where to stop. It is all good. If you like Viking (we have already booked our 2018 river cruise with them) or if you are thinking of this holiday then just book it. It is wonderful. Read Less
