One of my bucket list items and this trip did not disappoint. Even though we had to make 2 different ship changes due to the damaged lock, the crews were all amazing and handled the transitions flawlessly. We didn't lose a single excursion. Ships were immaculately maintained and all crew from the cabin stewards to the captains were top notch. The ships extra amenities at a small fee were exceptional offering everything from hair dressing to workout rooms to massages to laundry. Our cruise director Silvia ensured that everyone was well informed and looked after. This company provides a full service with all meals, drinks, excursions, air fare, transfers and tipping were included in our package price so we never had to spend a cent on board and oh yeah did I mention we had use of a personal butler as well - it just doesn't get any better than this. The food preparation, quality, quantity and presentation were all superb. Both my wife and myself have food allergies and the Maitre D' stopped by our table at almost every meal to ensure we were properly taken care of. A printed copy of every day's menu was delivered to our room with food items redacted on the menu that we were not supposed to eat leaving nothing to chance. Wait staff was amazing offering top rate service with a smile and good humor. Th selection of excursions ensured all people regardless of desires or abilities could be accommodated and they were fabulous with stops from small old towns to large cities (Vienna, Budapest). E-bikes available to anyone who wished to use them - free of course. Everything on board was ultra modern. Th dining room, lounge and even the cabins were well appointed and spacious. We had a balcony suite which I would highly recommend. These trips are not cheap but do not use a budget carrier go with the best use Scenic. Read Less

We chose the 14 day river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest with 3 days in Paris (Westin Hotel) at the start and 3 days in Prague (Art Deco Imperial Hotel) at the end. This was our first river cruise but we have been on 5 ocean cruises in the last 3 years. Scenic was pitched to us as 5 star all the way and it simply did not live up to its reputation. The Paris and Prague portions were excellent with great tour directors, hotels and excursions. We had free time and could walk most places. The high speed train from Paris to Amsterdam was excellent with good food and drink service as well as a comfortable seat. The transfer to Prague was via a long coach ride and we got stuck in two traffic jams due to accidents. A train transfer should be considered by Scenic. The cruise itself was underwhelming. The cabin was small but well appointed and comfortable. Our room steward was phenomenal and kept our room clean and well stocked including the mini bar. The balcony was nice but the window was loud to open and took about 15 seconds each way. Unfortunately due to the vast number of ships sailing this route we ended up tied alongside another ship for half of our time in Port. This meant that you couldn't really use the balcony and needed to keep the curtains closed which meant that you basically had an inside room. Balcony was a waste of time money. The food was a mixed bag. Both breakfast and lunch was served buffet style in the main dining room with an option for a la carte from a menu. The layout of the buffet was terrible with people not knowing which way to go and line ups for omelettes etc longer than I've experienced before and there was only 160+ onboard. Breakfast food was quite good but lunch here was not worth it and we generally went for the light lunch in the lounge upstairs which was less crowded. Dinner was great some nights including Portobellos and average some others as was the service. Definitely not 5 star dining and certainly the worst food overall that we have had on any cruise. The drink service was excellent including bar snacks before dinner. The excursions were also a mixed bag and as usual dependant on the tour guide. They varied from poor to very good but at this price point you expect excellent across the board. We discovered that the "Sundowner" excursion included in our package was only going to be drinks and snacks on the sun deck and not in a more exotic location as on other Scenic cruises. It never occurred anyways because shortly before that day they ran the stern of the ship aground briefly during the night, waking everyone up and damaging the propeller and other parts of the propulsion system. This necessitated placing the ship in dry dock for one day. The cruise director did a great job of rescheduling most of the excursions but some people missed out and we spent a lot of hours on a coach killing time until the ship was back in the water. The Captain, basically non communicative during the entire cruise, gave a poor and perhaps dishonest explanation of what occurred and why which satisfied few onboard. The "Sundowner" event never happened and was never mentioned again. Be aware that this cruise goes through 68 locks which are interesting at first and during dinner but not as much during the night after going through 40 already. We found a few crew members both unhappy and rude which we have never experienced before on any cruise. The majority however were very friendly and accommodating. The entertainment on board each evening was listed as live but was generally a DJ. One of our group complained one night and he switched to playing and singing live for a while which was quite good. The local entertainment they brought onboard several times in the afternoon was always excellent and we could have used more of that. Read Less

Our scenic adventure started with a driver waiting for us at Budapest airport who dropped us at Marriott. Great hotel good location. Two pre cruise days in Budapest. So much much to see and all of it walkable. Scenic picked up our luggage first then later transferred us to Scenic Ruby. Very efficient and quick process. We had a royal balcony suite on the ruby. Spacious, comfortable bed, large bathroom, plenty of storage for clothing, and separate lounges area w/small couch and two chairs. We were very happy with the size of the suite for our 15 day journey. Daily laundry service was an unexpected bonus. Put out your bag of clothes in the morning, and they are returned clean, folded and pressed in the afternoon. Though we did not use the butler service much, they were quick to respond when we called. Due to low water levels we had to change ships once after Melk. The staff on both Ruby and Jade made it so seamless, it was no issues what so ever. The daily choice of activites were excellent. We did bike rides, city tours, and more. Scenic really caters to all activity levels. Our tour guides in Salzburg and in Cologne were boring, so we set out on our own to explore. Wished we had more time to explore some of the Salzburg. The staff on both Ruby and Jade were quite honestly outstanding. From housekeeping who kept our suite spotless, to the wait staff in the dining room, all top notch. Food in the dining room was really quite good. My husband especially enjoyed the fresh cookie selection available all day every day next to that great coffee machine in the lounge. Alex our crises director was entertaining and informative, and we looked forward to the port talks each night, as well as his insightful presentations on the history and culture of the areas we cruised through. Each day he steered us to the right buses, or activities, and was always on hand to answer any questions we had for him. I really enjoyed the fact that I didn’t have to plan anything...we just had to choose what our activity was for the following day. We very much enjoyed the wonderful fellow cruisers on the boat. We are in our late 50’s early 60’s, so we were part of the younger crowd. But what a great mix of people. We also had on board two folks from National Geographic. Susan was the photographer who was there to share technique’s and help hone skills. Mark was there to share with us the history, culture and politics of the regions we were sailing through. Both were such a great addition to the cruise. We ended the cruise in Amsterdam, and spent two days exploring that lovely city. I would suggest that Scenic select another hotel option other than the Double tree. While it was a great location, it was was run down and our room was dirty. I would pay more for a nicer hotel. This was our first river cruise and our first Scenic adventure. Our first Nat Geo adventure. It is not often that often that reality exceeds expectations, but Scenic hit it out of the ball park on this trip. When Scenic says it’s all inclusive, they not kidding. From food to cocktails to all your excursions, it’s all included. If you are looking for outstanding service, spacious and lovely accommodations, varied excursions for all activity levels (we were the high activity level), a great mix of passengers, and a trip you won’t soon forget - Scenic is the cruise line for you. We chose this cruise du to the fact that it was all inclusive and the write-ups. Due to river levels we did not get to sail on the ship we paid for. This we found out the day before we boarded the ship (Scenic Amber) hence we were on an older vessel lacking amenities we paid for. At the time of booking this cruise (may 2017) we book adjacent rooms with close friends as both couples were celebrating 40th anniversary, and this trip was to commemorate this event. Upon boarding the ship found us separated substantially on the same deck. When we approached the cruise director he informed that the ships were different configuration and there was nothing he could do. We would have to take it up with Scenic at a later date. Needless to say the cruise started off totally with a crash. The change to the second ship ended up consuming almost 2 days with an evening packing, 6 hours on a bus for a 2 hour tour and an evening for unpacking into tighter quarters on "Scenic Pearl". Dining on board was average at best but should be rated at 2.5, other than the Table La Riv. Compared to other cruises I have been where dining would be 4 to 5. Read Less

We chose this cruise after very careful scrutiny of itineraries, cabins and amenities. This was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, and had to be very special. We booked 51 weeks in advance to ensure we got what we wanted and what we paid for. We arrived in Budapest on August 20/18, got our bags, went through customs and finally found our private transfer to the ship. We were VERY disappointed to find that we were not going to the ship but to the Corinthia hotel. Australian and British passengers were advised in advance of the change caused by low water in the river. Canadians were not advised. Ships could not get past Vienna going up the river, or Regensburg coming down. The Jade was one of those stuck above Regensburg. J.J. the Cruise Director, met with the group of us who had been assigned to stay at the Corinthia. He promised that we would meet up with the Scenic Pearl in Vienna, and that our cabin would be equivalent to what we had booked on the Scenic Jade. He also told us that we would be transferred to the Jade at Regensburg, at some point, which meant we had to pack up and move partway through the cruise. At dinner that evening, at the Corinthia, I advised J.J. that I had a dairy allergy (the appropriate form had been filled out and submitted to Scenic in October 2017). He arranged for the maitre d' to help me with what I could eat on the buffet. However, when we were taken to a restaurant the next day for lunch, enroute to Vienna, he had not advised them and there was nothing I could eat safely. He became angry when I told him that and said it was not his job to worry about everyone's diet. He claimed he managed 7 ships and hundreds of guests and staff, and had no time to worry about everyone's diet. He blamed Scenic, the restaurant and me. His job was to take care of us on behalf of Scenic. My dietary restrictions were an issue for the entirety of the cruise. I was given the menus for the day each morning, once we reached the Jade. The dishes containing dairy were highlighted, but no alternates offered. The food on both ships was terrible. Very little choice, poorly executed and very little of it. We often had room service for dinner because it was faster, and tasted better than the dining room. On approximately the day 3 on the Jade, they stopped offering coffee/tea at lunch and dinner. For the most part, the crew with the exception of J.J., were wonderful. Our butlers: Kris & Gus (Pearl) and Harry (Jade) were very attentive. Harry especially would ensure my meals were dairy free and I was being taken care of, when he was in the dining room. Read Less

We chose Scenic because of its reputation and that it was Australian. The guests were a mixture of Aussies (100), Canadians (40) Brits (10) ands two US couples. So, it was mostly a nice "Commonwealth" group. Initially we had to overnight in Budapest at a hotel since no cruise ships were reaching that port. The next day, we were transferred to Vienna by bus where we boarded the Pearl. Some people were not happy, but Scenic handled the situation well. In Passau, we were finally transferred to the Jade, which again went well considering the single day turnover of guests aboard both ships. Our Cruise Director "JJ" was excellent, entertaining, and very knowledgeable. He stayed with us on the full journey. We thoroughly enjoyed this adventure, the onshore excursions which were numerous, the onboard entertainment, gourmet meals at dinner and the great staff on both ships. What a wonderful experience. We would highly recommend Scenic to anyone for a European river boat cruise. Read Less

while I have no complaints regarding the staff and crew of the Jade,I do have serious complaints about the way we were treated by Scenic. There was no communication about the fact that the Jade did not make it to Budapest ,we had to phone despite Scenic having all our email addresses. On our first day we were bused to The Courtyard Marriott in Budapest,a third rate hotel with basically no facilities,a three star room, and a dreadful buffet meal with only one small glass of local beer allowed.Other passengers were accommodated in 5 star hotels which one would expect given the prices we paid. The next day included the 'guide tour of Budapest 'excursion. This was basically a bus tour for four hours , with the only highlight being a brilliant piano and organ recital. No water was offered despite it being 35 degrees C.We were then subjected to a 5 hour bus transfer to Vienna to join the Pearl, NOT the Jade that had been booked. Our room was the same number as the room booked on the Jade but was quite a lot smaller, and had a tiny shower, Certainly not what you could call luxurious. The balcony option may be a waste of money as many days we woke up to another ship moored alongside. After several days on the Danube we were bused again to join the Jade in Regensburg. We eventually got our luxury balcony suite that we had paid for. The rest of the cruise was good .It is less a luxury cruise, more like a luxury bus tour as every day involved trips on coaches, sometimes as long as four hours round trip.[The Sound of Music excursion] These ships are short on space, and long on numbers of passengers. There was never enough room in the lounge to sit unless someone went an hour ahead to reserve seats. You should be aware that it appears that Scenic market these tours extensively in Australia,so don't be surprised if you are cheek and jowl with over 120 large and loud Aussies!! Read Less

36 hours before we were due to fly to Amsterdam we received an email via Scenic to our agent informing us that we were going on the Scenic Jade when we embarked at Amsterdam and not the Ruby. We were not up set as the Jade was a few years newer. We found the transfers to the ship good, on arriving our luggage was left at the quay and later arrived at our room. We found our tour guide Andrea excellent, if all destinations staff were so well organised as she was all of our previous Ocean cruises would have been far much better. The tours were very good, the only tour which was a disappointment was the coach trip to Cologne, nothing wrong with the coach or the city. Just the english tour guide who had very little interest in taking the group round the city centre area. In fact we went to the Cathedral and stood out side for some 30 minutes then he disappeared for good, we walked around in free time. The other tours which were in the cruise itinerary were excellent, some fairly early starts to get there but worth the the early start. The castle tour and banquet to Marksburg was okay, the tour actually around the castle was good, done by volunteers, but the medieval feast was a bit poor and did not live up to to our expectations from a up market cruise. Otherwise all other tours were very good. Dining was set time, 19.00 which meant that that everyone collected at the same point, the lounge for the pre next day information talk and then down into the restaurant. Service overall was fairly slow, some nights taking 2.5 hours to finally get your desserts. It improved slightly as time went by but not that impressed. Some reviews in the past have commented on the standard of the food served and it should not be compared to Ocean cruising food, well we have cruised all over the world and I can only say that the food was over hyped, very small servings, in fact my wife also ordered soup as one of the dishes every night because the all other servings were very small quantities. Harry our butler was very good and looked after us very well at all times, it was disappointment to have to see him go as when we had to leave the Jade at Linz and join the Jasper at Melk. This was because a part of the Danube was so low due to the long dry summer that Europe had been experiencing. Lucky for us we managed to navigate the rest of thee cruise on the Jasper to Budapest. The rest of the cruise review is under Scenic Jasper. Read Less

We were meeting friends who were coming to meet us on board from the UK. This was their first river cruise and one couple has already said their last. Although the itinerary was great the level of service, staff in both dining and lounge was poor to none on Scenic Jade and because we had to change ships due to water levels Scenic Jasper was ok but not great either. Not sure if staff was lacking on the Jade but the dining room manager was never there we were lucky to find a server for a cup of coffee in the morning water or beverages in the evening to start a meal. The same applied for the service in the lounge unless you went up to the bar area to request a drink the servers were slow to none. The Jasper was better but again service levels were not there Appetizers and champagne were suppose to be served but both sides were served and not the middle. Very disorganized both staff and cruise director giving false information in regards to the changing of ships. We were to get same cabin numbers on Jasper that we had on Jade and the door would be open after our bus ride of over 6.5 hours and that was false, we were given a smaller cabin that was not in the same category that we booked when we came on board. Our original ship was to be the Scenic Ruby and we were told while in transit day prior our ship was changed to the Jade. Our sailing was actually August 13, 2018. This was our second river cruise with Scenic and probably our last due to all the sickness on board both ships lack of quality of service and disorganization and bussed way too much. Very disappointing. Read Less

We picked this cruise line because it was an all inclusive luxury cruise on the list of best cruises according to Cruise Critic with a so called butler included that was going to make our trip a breeze. Not true! But for me their costumer service is the worse part of Scenic. My problem with costumer service started right at the time of booking. The gentleman with whom I spoke for more than an 1hour provided me with all kind of wrong information and ended up booking me on the wrong day. I do admit to not have reviewed closely the confirmation paper he sent me, but when I called back to ask for the correction, I was told that I needed cancel and start a new booking loosing all the advantages of early booking. Of course I was not doing that, so I was passed along to the manager who agreed to investigate and call me back. Which she did, confessing that they went back and listened to the entire hour of my conversation and admitted that never once the date I had been booked was ever mentioned and that indeed the gentleman had provided all kinds of wrong information. This was just the first episode with them. Scenic Air was another nightmare, I had been told that they would contact me in Nov. and by January I had to call them. Talked to a lady, gave her all the information ( all 6 passengers were coming and going in different days, from different cities) and was told that she would get back to me with my reservations. Many calls later, speaking to many different people, explaining the same thing over and over, getting mad, I was finally able to get a person to do the booking of our flights. It is unacceptable that they do not provide you one contact person and have that person deal with all aspects of your trip from beginning to end. Their website is a real nightmare and to call them is even worse. As if that was not bad enough I had to deal with their lack of service and response on my return. After a cruise in which we spent 5 days out of the boat due to low water levels, we were sent a generic letter from Scenic saying sorry if you had any inconvenience and giving us a small rebate for 3 days. I immediately contacted them telling them that we had been promised 5 days, and to give them my view on the fact that we had paid for the 2 most expensive cabins on board and had been given the worse hotel rooms on land in the worse hotels possible. I was expecting some personal note, maybe a call apologizing and acknowledging their oversight and got instead a note from Jeffrey Scott, Sales Consultant, saying, and I quote " I will pass along your comments regarding the compensation as well as your comments on the cruise itself on to our departmental manager, who is away on holiday at the moment but will return next week." Of course, Mr. Mueller, the Departmental Manager, never called me on his own volition. I had to call them a week later, pass thru their thousand of options, get a selling agent, and ask to speak with either Mr. Scott or Alan Mueller. At last I was able to talk to Mr. Mueller who told me that he would investigate the matter and get back to me. Still waiting on that call but I guess that he did investigate because I just got the same generic letter corrected to 5 days of compensation rather than 3. Never once did these Managers said their were sorry about the fact that we paid much more than the regular cabins for the Royal and Panorama cabins and got the worse possible rooms in all the hotels we stayed. Sometimes a few words, a little kindness go a long way and make the difference between a good experience and a very bad one. Scenic NEEDS to work on their Costumer Service. From the moment that one uses the website to the moment we get back - their service is horrendous. And they specially need someone, in case of a problem, that knows how to talk with/to appease their not so happy costumers. Having said all this I want to make it clear that the staff on board was very nice, polite, professional and worked very hard. It appears that everyone has many jobs and they are always running around trying their best with a smile on their faces. The food is pretty average, not the upscale dinning experience promised in their brochure and the 3 restaurants advertised are a joke. They use the same place and call it different names because they offer different food at a specific table. Oh well, it is a small boat after all. The excursions were somehow affected by the need to bus us from the hotels rather than the cruise which might have made them be shorten in order to accommodate the time spent on the bus. Maybe in normal circumstances they would have been a little more relaxed and more enjoyable. Despite the inconveniences the family had a good time while onboard... not so good time on the hotels we were placed while on land. Some of them were unacceptable. If you are ever offered the Novotel City hotel in Budapest, make sure to refuse. Read Less

Wanted to try River cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. Was supposed to be on Scenic Ruby day prior to sailing while in transit was told it was changed to scenic Jade. Service in dining room and lounge was absolutely terrible not sure if they were understaffed or this was the norm however we were a table of 6 and it was very difficult to get a cup of coffee water tea or anything at all dinners and if you did get lucky one person got it as the waiter would walk away without asking anyone else at the table. If in the lounge you very rarely got served a drink unless you went up to the bar and gave your drink order. We were told on day 2 that we needed to change ships because of the water level so in the morning pack your things. Packed up than were told it was okay we got a wave and could stay on this ship so after unpacking set sail. We were bussed so much and for hours than again told to pack up changing ships to Jasper and after all day on a bus arrived at the Jasper. We were told by the cruise director we would keep same cabin and we would just go into our room as the door we be open. This was Not the case we were given a smaller cabin and nothing we could do about it, this was not the category we paid for. The service on Jasper was better but still not up to standards. This cruise was not cheap and the quality of service plus the disorganization of the staff and cruise director left us saying never again. I understand low water levels happen and itineraries can change but quality of service and staff should not. Read Less

Quality of the food was downright poor. We did not like much of the buffet food and were not told that we could order from a menu. We finally found this out on the next to last day of the cruise. One day for lunch there was no protein at all. Scenic dining service was terrible. Restaurant staff had no clue how to provide service. Most dinners took 2 hours. After dinner it took 20 minutes for the server just to get a cup of coffee. I finally went and got one myself. Told this to the director and he politely smiled, but this didn't change anything. On the sun deck service, was nonexistent. I had to go downstairs to the bar to get my own drink. Even in the loune right next to the bar it took way too long for a server to get a drink. The crew was simply way understaffed. Communication was extremely poor - no one could provide times for events until the night before. We purchased a cruise on the Scenic Amber. Scenic had to change boats because of low water on the river. But we were never told that Scenic changed boats on us until we arrived. They put us on the Jade then a 6 hour bus ride to the Jasper several days into the cruise. Read Less

Food was good - maybe not outstanding - but nothing to complain about. The drinks were great. Almost all the shore excursions were very good. There was a winery tour with this weird new age theme that I could have skipped and sometimes the guided tours were more talk and less tour but I enjoyed them nonetheless. The e-bikes are a great touch - we really enjoyed them. Overall, I would highly recommend but go earlier in the summer when you are more certain there will be water in the rivers! Read Less

We had taken 3 previous cruises with Scenic and the cruises had been beyond reproach in all phases. On this cruise it was the little things that were missing. We shouldn't have to ask to have to have the shower gel replaced. We had to change ships because of low water levels and we left an apple Tablet pen behind in our cabin. The Cruise Director appeared unimpressed and unconcerned about attempting to have the pen retrieved and/or sent home for us. It was apparent that no attempt was made to even determine if the pen was found. On our last night we waited for 2 hours to get a cold meal. What was supposed to be tenderloin was like shoe leather. Again, the Cruise Director did not seem to care. When the issue was raised with the Chef he offered to by us a drink. He had to be informed it was an all inclusive cruise. Poor employee awareness. Our butlers on both ships were excellent. They tended to our needs in a timely and professional manner. The Bar and service staff were also very good. The Bar quickly learned what your beverage of choice was and would often have it waiting for you. The entertainment that was provide on a nightly basis was superb. The Brass Band and the Schuhplattler Folk Dance group were especially good. The DJ on the Jade was terrific. He engaged the audience and had everyone up and dancing. The DJ on the Jasper was lame. He made no attempt to engage his audience and was not up to Scenic's usually high standards. As always, the multiple excursions at each Port of Call, met or exceeded Scenic's standards. To have multiple excursions included is one of Scenic's major pluses. Scenic's no tipping policy is also an advantage as far as I am concerned. Overall, we enjoyed the cruise, but it was certainly not up to Scenic's usual standards. Neglecting the little things makes the difference between a 5 Star and a 3 Star enterprise. We will sail with Scenic again in the hope that the issues we encountered on this cruise were an aberration and not a sign of things to come. Read Less

We did have to change ships from the Scenic Jasper to Jade (which was our expected ship to travel on) due to the water levels; but the transfer of ships was both seamless and painless. This easy transition was due to the professional and competent way it was handled by the crew and the explanations by our cruise director. Everything about our cruise was top of the line. The crew, especially our cruise director Cathy, were extremely friendly, professional and knowledgeable. All the excursions off the ship were interesting and wonderful to see. The on board entertainment was exceptional. All the guest appearances brought on board were wonderful. The food was awesome. All items were fresh and dishes were from the area of our cruise. The ala carte choices for dinner were wonderful with a different set of choices every night. The cabins, food and service of the crew allowed us to live in luxury for the 2 weeks we were on board. We will definitely travel with Scenic again!! Read Less

We have just returned from our 2018 “Gem’s of the Danube” luxury river cruise. Actually, that is not correct. We have just returned from a mediocre bus tour of several cities near the Danube. Leave your wallet at home. Personal butler service. Dine in style. A Five-Star experience. • What we got were long bus rides, short tours, jumbled hotel rooms, noisy city streets, and crowded cafeteria buffets. This was a very expensive cruise for which we had saved and planned. Scenic failed to deliver. After we boarded, at our first “Port Talk,” we were told there might be interruptions to our cruise due to water levels. Our Cruise Director was patronizing and misleading. We were consistently told there a was a good chance the tour would move forward. It had not rained in three months! Therefore, Scenic knew of the water problems. We should have been notified before leaving home and given the option of changing dates or canceling our trip. It is particularly significant that guests from other nations were in fact formally notified in advance of potential problems. We were not. We had the joy of sailing for one day with only 1/2 of a day of being able to sit on top of the ship and experience the beautiful scenery. And that one day was merely being taxied back and forth on the Canal. I do not believe we ever actually traveled the Danube. Looking at the map, we soon learned why we were seeing the same scenery over and over. Motoring upstream and then back downstream, we covered the same territory twice!! We then docked in the canal, in a desolate place where we had to walk through bushes on a dirt path in order to get to tour buses. Finally, we were notified there would be no more sailing. Other cruise lines completed the route during this time period. Other vessels with Scenic were able to exchange passengers and continue their river tour. We were the losers. Our options were to return home, stay in the canal, or continue on buses. We were housed, fed and given our excursions, but entirely lost the experience promised. • No exceptional service, exceptional food, or exceptional amenities. • No moving in and getting settled. • No sailing into the beautiful cities as described. • No sitting on top of the ship and enjoying the lights at night in Vienna and Budapest. Instead of a luxury suite overlooking the history of Europe, we got hotel rooms overlooking a noisy street. Instead of a romantic adventure, we got twin beds! We had to pack early each day, spend hours on buses, our tours were cut short, we paid for drinks and snacks, and we had to find change to use pay toilets at each rest stop. If we wanted a mediocre bus tour, we would have booked one – for much, much less money. • We were placed on a different ship - NOT the one that we had paid for. There are marked differences between the Jasper and the Jade – including age and the lack of a pool. • We missed several destinations – Linz, Wachau Valley, Passau. On the other hand, we traveled the Kelheim to Nuremburg Canal twice. • We lost the all-inclusive bar, 24-hour snacks, free mini bar, butler service, laundry, and in room dining. No greeting with champagne and flowers. • We spent more time on the bus than on the boat. We spent more time on the bus than on scheduled tours. And because of necessary driving time, the tours were cut short and free time reduced or eliminated. • After we left the boat, we did not have access to the Tailormades - which meant we could not hear the guides. • We did not enjoy any last night festivities. Many did not get to enjoy the Portabello Restaurant. • Moving every day was disruptive and stressful. We were required to pack up and have our luggage out by the door very early each morning. There was no luggage delivery at hotels. The purpose of selecting a cruise was to have continuity and comfort. • Our 4 a.m. airport shuttle (and promised breakfast box) failed to appear. We took a paid taxi to the airport. Scenic will respond that the navigation problem was unforeseeable. We believe Scenic knew of the likely problem for weeks and even months before the trip and gambled with our vacation to minimize cancellations and losses. (I do not believe they could have arranged 100 hotel rooms in each city on short notice.) As noted earlier, other guests were informed. We too should have been given options before we left the US. Scenic needs to make this right. They claim to be 5-star enterprise and to provide guests with luxury amenities and accommodations. We feel we were misled from the beginning. Since returning home we have been offered a 25% refund if we submit a claim to Scenic’s insurer. We have reached out to Customer Care, reminding them of the inconvenience, disappointment, and that a bus tour is significantly less expensive. Alan, Customer Care Manager, phoned me and promised a response within a week. I called him two weeks later, having heard nothing. He again promised a response within the week. He then emailed me referring me back to my local travel agent who does not work for Scenic. Clearly these people care little for their customers. Read Less

Fantastic trip, the food, refreshments and the staff and organisation was outstanding. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. Would highly recommend the trip to anyone. The sightseeing was great, the tour guides knew their stuff and were most informative. Everything ran like clockwork. Daily information was conveyed to everyone, clearly and without confusion on most occasions. Met some really good people on the ship. Many of the ports we stopped out were quite magnificent. I have made special comment on the cabin below as this was the only disappointing part of the trip. As this was a first cruise, we were not disappointed, with the exception of the cabin. We would definitely go again and no doubt enjoy the next one as much as this. We would be very particular as to which cabin we wanted because if we could not get the one we wanted we would look elsewhere which would be a shame as Scenic really do a great job. Finally the entertainment was goo but the performer needs to look at the age of the group and have suitable music ALL the time!! Read Less

I love the Scenic river cruise line. This was my 4th trip with them. I particularly like having everything included such as: all tips even for shore excursions, mini bar, cocktails, coffee & tea anytime, special shore Enrichment events like a concert or Medieval dinner in a castle just for us. You can have an early or late breakfast and there is always something to eat between meals. There is a gentle walk excursion for those that have some mobility issues. This was great for those with walkers, canes etc. I also loved the opportunity to have a laundry bag stuffed full of dirty clothes laundered free of charge once during the trip as it was very hot and we changed clothes a few times a day. A waiter even remembered me and my first name from a cruise I took 2 years ago. Pretty impressive!! The crew on the Jade went out of their way to make our cruise a true hassle free excursion. In short, "What you pay before you start is all you pay". Read Less

We had heard from friends how well the cruise was run and the excellent service, we were not disappointed at all, the Scenic Jade crew and staff were a joy to have helping and serving, the transfer from Scenic Jade to Scenic Jasper was very smooth but we were spoilt by the Scenic Jade staff, Adrian carried out his duties to ensure everyone on the ship were well informed and as an individual he was excellent. The crew and staff on the Scenic Jade made our life and the cruise so easy, we were treated with respect and dignity, all of the exercuisions were well thought out and planned. The Highlights to the cruise were the Marksburg Castle tour, the Rhine Gorge, the walking tour of Nuremberg, Salzburg and the Sound of Music show, the Sundowner show was good but nowhere near as good as the Classical music concert at Palais Liechtenstein. The Scenic Jasper Disco Night was an excellent choice for the farewell evening. Read Less

This was to be a very special trip for my husband and myself and was ruined by the following: Flights to Munich airport were the cheapest tickets available, no seats had been reserved, therefore we had to purchase our seats via the airline so that we could sit together. On arrival at Munich we were told we would have to wait for other passengers to arrive from various flights before we could be taken to our ship, this resulted in a THREE hour wait at the airport before our bus could leave. We were told we would not be going to Nuremburg as there was some issue, so were then taken by bus to a town further down the river, thus resulting in us missing the first section of our cruise. Our ship did not sail again until late afternoon on day THREE. The ship has one public room which holds the lounge/ bar and river café, One main dining hall which is like a staff canteen and very regimented, everyone is expected to eat each night at 7pm sharp, the 'open dining' only means that you can sit anywhere there are seats available. Table Larive is NOT a restaurant, but a long table at the back of the main restaurant, hosting 10 - 12 guests. Potobellos Restaurant is supposed to be Italian, but do not expect Italian food, and the menu is the same each night. The gift shop is a display cabinet at reception. The wellness centre is a very small room with one sink to wash hair with one hairdresser. The massager has the room next door which is only big enough for a table and little else. We could not use our balcony or open our window while moored as we were constantly double moored which resulted in us looking directly into the ship along side. There was no waiter service on the sun deck. Sight seeing while cruising was limited as we tended to sail more during the night, which in our cabin was very noisy due to being above the engine room. The free choice was not what we expected, you could go and see a church or a castle but this did not allow you any time to actually see the cities themselves, which is what we wanted to see. The Cruise Director was drunk each night and could be very rude at times We had a Royal Panorama Suit which was nice but not as shown in the brochure Our luxury transfer back home was a taxi mini bus!! Not sure where the luxury 5 star statement comes from in the brochure, luxury or VIP it was NOT. We paid over £8,000.00 for a seven day cruise, which was not worth the money, It was our first and last river cruise, however, I am sure there will be other companies out there which would supply a much better experience. We had previously cruised with Scenic on the Rhine River in the fall and had a terrific time. We actually booked this cruise for the Danube River over two years ago in order to ensure we got our first choice of cabins. At first, glance Scenic may seem more expensive than other river cruise lines in Europe. However, the key with Scenic is that almost everything is included. (Butler service, food, alcohol, including restocking your mini-bar daily, shore excursions and transfers). They will even provide electric bikes at no charge if you wish to explore on your own or in a group. I should mention tipping is included on board the ship as well as for your shore excursions. It is totally up to you if you decide to leave extra for any of the staff which I chose to do. You don't even need to set up an onboard account. The Scenic staff even passes out free bottled water as you exit the ship for your shore excursions, unlike some cruise lines that will try to sell you water. Scenic also sent two high-quality backpacks for my wife and me to take on our trip along with our travel documents two weeks prior to the cruise departure. Worried about getting lost if you decide to explore a city on your own? Scenic provides two GPS units (called Taylormades) to each cabin that are pre-programmed with points of interest, historical commentary, walking tours and maps. While on board you can turn it on and listen to commentary regarding points of interests as you pass by them on the river. One of the keys to me on any cruise is the friendliness of the staff members. The staff on this cruise were outstanding. It is apparent that getting to work on Scenic is a sought-after position for many of the staff members. BUTLERS: Bogdan and Harry Every group of cabins has a butler assigned. Our assigned butler was Bogdan and it is obvious why he was the chief butler on this ship. In our initial meeting with Bogdan, I mentioned I had enjoyed the miniature Bailey Irish Cremes that were in our mini-bar on the previous Scenic cruise on the Rhine. Bogdan apologized and said they didn't stock Bailey’s on this ship. However, he offered to bring me a Bailey’s from the bar anytime I wanted. I told him I certainly did not expect him to do this since our cabin was at the very back of the ship and I would be glad to walk to the bar. Bogdan insisted he would not mind. However, by the next day, my mini-bar was stocked with Baileys. Obviously, Scenic sent someone on shore to purchase some Bailey’s miniatures for me. I also want to mention Harry who is another butler that provided great service throughout our cruise. Bogdan and Harry were the team leaders at our incredible meal at Table Le Rive on one of the nights. It was an over three-hour meal for a dozen passengers that had six courses along with six flights of wine and an after-dinner drink. Harry always had a smile on his face and knew our names by the second day even though he wasn’t our assigned butler. I predict Harry will be the chief butler on another of the Scenic ships in the future. FOOD: Chef Raka GLUTEN FREE Available Obviously, this was particularly important for my wife and me since she has Celiac Disease and has to eat Gluten Free to avoid being hospitalized if the food is cross-contaminated. Agnes who is the restaurant manager met with a group of us with food allergies on the first evening in order to assure us they could accommodate our requests. Each day Agnes had lists of the meals for lunch and dinner sent directly to our cabin. The items my wife could not have were highlighted. Frankly, even if the items were highlighted they were willing to accommodate us. One example was when Wienerschnitzel was being served one evening. Naturally, it is typically coated with a wheat flour. They arranged to make Sheila some that were coated in rice or potatoes flower. Our waiter Satri and his assistant Dilip were great. They worked their butts off to provide top-level service to us in the dining room. Scenic has open seating but we made it a point to sit in the area served by both Satri and Dilip since we enjoyed having them service our table. Satri would immediately know to bring our Gluten Free bread for my wife. Plus he made sure there were special gluten-free deserts available beside typical fruit and ice cream options. HOTEL MANAGER: Marije Marija has obviously put together a top-flight team of managers. Everyone is always working to ensure your expectations are exceeded. We initially had an issue with our cabin being hot. Marije sent the chief engineer to our cabin to work on the issue. Throughout the cruise, Marije personally followed up with us to make sure we were pleased. Marije is very much a hands-on a boss who leads by example. CRUISE DIRECTOR: Adrian Anyone who has cruised knows the importance of having a good cruise director and how many hours they work. It seems they are the first up and the last to go to sleep. Adrian was absolutely impressive. Each day he provided port briefings for the following day with useful tips. He was always available as the busses were loaded to the various excursions offered each day. Adrain is a “worker”. At the end of the cruise, passengers were headed in many different directions (some heading to Prague, other to the airport, and some leaving on their own). Someone questioned Adrain whether their luggage would be properly handled. Adrian assured them he had never lost a badge and that he would be overseeing the bags on the day of departure. Adrian wasn’t kidding. He personally checked every luggage tag of all the bags by the side of the ship and personally helped carry and put them underneath the buses. He obviously, doesn't need to use the gym since he gets an incredible physical workout. SUMMARY: If you want a cruise where amost everything is included and the service is TOP NOTCH, then I highly recommend Scenic. My wife and I are already looking forward to our two upcoming cruises on the new Scenic Discovey ship that will offer cruises all across the world. We have booked Cuba for this fall and the Norwegian Fjords for summer of 2019. Read Less

We have travelled from Amsterdam to Budapest and wanted to see the remainder of the Danube. We found the area very different, not as interesting but the cruise itself was enjoyable. The area has seen it share of communism and war. Plenty of bullet holes throughout the region. Budapest and Bucharest are both fascinating cities although the remainder of the owns leave a lot to be desired. The excursions offered were not the best but more than likely there isn't much available. There was quite a mixture of passengers from numerous countries which always adds interest to the cruise. A note to anyone travelling on Scenic. It is suggested a jacket for the men but I saw only two gentlemen bother. It is a more relaxed atmosphere with smart casual dinner dress. The hotels provided both before and after were excellent including the transfers to and from the airport and ship. All in all a good cruise and we would travel with Scenic again. Read Less

We chose this because of the number of countries we would see and my Romanian heritage. Everything was run perfectly from meeting us at the airport to hotels pre and post cruise, excursions, dining cabin and the overall ship. The service level was fantastic. There was not a hitch in the entire 11 days and Scenic booked it all including our flights. While expensive the experience was worth it and we are looking at where do we go with Scenic next. We were able to experience the Table de la Rive which was a seven course meal with wine pairings as well at Portobellos Italian Restaurant which again was multi course but Italian themed. Both were excellent. The only challenge with the dining was the set time although 7 pm. is acceptable. We got the opportunity the meet many people from all over the world, Canadians were a minority on this sailing, and to hear about parts of the world that were not even part of the cruise. Read Less

My husband & I decided on Scenic because everything was paid for up front, no hidden extras. The ships are smaller, allowing more interaction with passengers and crew. We arrived in Amsterdam the day prior the cruise departure, mainly to recover from jetlag, but also to revisit a city last seen in 1975. We were very pleased with our decision to arrive early. We walked to the embarkation point and straight onto the ship - so easy. The days were full of things to do - if you wanted too. The range of different foods was staggering, everyday was an adventure. The crew knew what the word 'Service' means and delivered. The time on shore was well spent and full of surprizes - many varying sites to visit (and not all castles or cathedrals). The selections were very interesting and you wanted to visit all of the places on offer. Yes, I would travel with Scenic again and I have told many friends of the wonderful time Scenic gave us to discover this beautiful part of the world. Read Less

I don’t know where to begin because Scenic was so wonderful!. We chose Scenic because they offer an all inclusive price. The crew, the food, the wine, the other guests.....everything about the trip was fantastic. The crew always appeared happy, even when faced with silly requests. I would like to give special kudos to the cruise director JJ. We were entertained from the time we boarded to the time we disembarked. He made it look like there were never any glitches,...everything ran so smooth, especially the disembarkation process. People leaving at different times for different places with scads of luggage. VERY impressive JJ! The guests were also wonderful. Met many , many folks from Australia. I’m going to get out a map of Australia when I get home to see all the places where folks were from. Scenic provided “gentle” walking tours for those of us who had walking difficulties. There was always a selection of excursions to choose from depending on your interest or abilities. The captain took us on a magical nighttime cruise of the Budapest harbour when we arrived in our final city. I can’t say enough about Scenic Cruise lines. I wouldn’t look at any other company when booking a river cruise. Read Less
