My wife and i had seen the commercials on public television for years and always talked about how much fun and how different we imagined a river cruise to be. When we were married in 2015, our crazy schedules didn't allow us to take a proper honeymoon. So we decided to save up for something really special -- and three years later, we were sailing up the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam. We enjoyed pretty much everything about our cruise. The staff was amazing, the ports were varied and interesting, and the excursions were fun and educational. And don't get me started on the food. Made some great friends and fortunately were able to walk off most of the calories. The only hitch came when they switched our ship from the Hjin to the Kara shortly before our departure date due to low river levels. But as far as we could tell, it made no real difference. Our trip was everything we had hoped for and more. Read Less

We chose to go on Viking because they had the schedule that fit our calendar. We had a good recommendation from friends who had been on the exact cruise and loved it. We loved the intimacy and personal attention given to us by everyone on board. The layout of the vessel was good and the service was top rate! Although the room was smaller than others, it was sufficient and always clean. We appreciated the discussion the night before by George, the director, about the excursion and entertainment the next day. It was very relaxing to do this before dinner. We also enjoyed the entertainment brought on board at specific ports for short concerts. The included excursions were perfect and varied. I thought that your description of the level of activity (strenuous etc) was a good warning. All in all, we're ready to go again but this time on the Danube. We're already booked! Read Less

A group of 7 couples decided on the Viking Rhine River cruise. We liked the various ports, but particularly the opportunity to visit Basel (our departure city) and Amsterdam. The boat was lovely and just spacious enough. We have a French Balcony room and were very happy with our accommodations. The bed was very comfortable, and we were able to look our the balcony door. Most of our sailing time was at night, and we were out on excursions and touring during the day. One unexpected issue, was that the boats often dock & tie off to another boat. So when you woke up in the morning, you weren't looking at the river, but another boat - six feet away. Glad we didn't upgrade to a balcony suite, don't expect we would have had much time to use it. There was more than adequate clothing storage. The shower and bathroom were small, but had space for the necessary bathroom items. Our room attendant was amazing, things were always fresh and cleaned. The common areas were bright, with large floor to ceiling windows. The dining room was comfortable and the meals all very good. There were a few standard items on the menu and then a daily menu. Lots of offerings at both lunch and dinner. Breakfast options din't really change much. The omelet station was good, but would have been nice had they changed some of the ingredients during the trip. There was also a buffet offering on the Aquavit for breakfast and lunch - not sure about dinner. The crew was amazing - the front desk, dining staff, and especially the lounge staff. All were friendly and very accommodating. Our cruise director, Candy was amazing, making sure our excursions and time on the trip was enjoyable. My only issue was the regular lounge entertainment was lacking. We did have a couple of special guest come in and they were great. The ports and excursions were very good. Most of the excursions brought you in to the old town area of the ports and provided an overview (about 2 - 3 hours). As we are accustomed to independent travel, we liked this format. We usually had several more hours in each city to explore at our leisure. Our favorite stop were the windmills in Kinderdijk. This was an rare opportunity to see 18 functioning windmills and to see how the Dutch used the windmills to drain their land. We had a wonderful time, met some wonderful people and am looking forward to our next Viking cruise. Read Less

Family members recommended it. Viking has good reputation. We had a great time and met many new friends. The crew knew our names by the second day. We had to change ships mid way due to low water levels. The whole process went unblemished with very little inconvenience for the passengers. Food was good. Some meals were better than others but generally good. It was a good idea to have left side of menu staying the same and right side changed daily. Breakfasts, especially choice of cheeses and pastry were great. Enjoyed the yogurt too. The wait staff did everything that they could to meet our requests. Also enjoyed the cocktail areas. The beverage package was a good deal. We enjoyed many evenings pre and post dinners sitting with new friends enjoying our cocktails-made to order. The excursions were good. It was lovely to start out at a reasonable time in the mornings-not the crack of dawn as other tours do. Also nice that we had leisure time that we could enjoy. Can't wait till the next cruise! First time on a Viking Cruise, but it will not be my last. The crew was very friendly and helpful during the cruise remembering names and what was your favorite beverage, the service in the dinning room was first rate, although the food could have been better, but the wine was excellent. The cabins were small but had everything you needed, you really don't spend much time in your cabin. The Director of Activity was wonderful she took care of everything on the excursions with out a problem. The excursions were interesting and you had time to be on your own, they were about 3 to 4 hrs. which was just right. Before dinner she would inform you of the next days activities, which was very helpful. We met a great group of people from all over the US and had a lot of fun. It was a very relaxing cruise if you are looking for lots of activities in the evening this is not for you, the entertainment was fine, piano music and dancing and some local entertainment. All in all it was just what i wanted and needed no packing and unpacking every night and I had time to just enjoy the beautiful Rhine. Read Less

We sailed August on Rhine Getaway from Amsterdam to Bazel looking forward to our first river cruise with Viking as we did Med odessey on Viking Star 2yrs ago. We were informed the day we sailed that possible river levels may effect our cruise. When we were told on board 3 days later It all went pear shaped when we berthed at kioblenz and had to swap from HILn to Kara via a 3hr bus trip with no air conditioning in 30deg heat! The food and service on Kara was terrible in comparison to Hiln. On disembarking at Bazel we were told due to Koblenz excursion being cancelled an on board credit of $212Aud will be deposited into our bank in 10 working days, we still haven’t received this it is now Oct! With many email requests for refund payment and the terrible excuses after excuses (including we are changing our account system)we have now cancelled Viking Alaska 2020 lost cruise at the expense of our deposit paid, and now resided to the fact we will never see our on board AUD$212 again which is rightfully and lawfully ours. The last email we had a week ago was it will be paid on Monday night (Hasnt happened either) Viking have been dishonest and won’t give our refund back! Therefor we would never cruise or recommend Viking to anyone due to the mistreatment we have experienced. They did offer a $100 on board credit for our next cruise how shocking and rude is that! Princess Cruises here we come. Read Less

I've been reading about Viking river cruises for years in the brochures that arrive in my mailbox. Two years ago my sister and her husband took this trip. My sister (who is an avid complainer) not only had absolutely nothing to complain about, but raved about everything connected with their trip. That sold me. When my husband and I decided to give Viking a try, we chose the Rhine trip. Viking has an exceptional way of letting you research the ports you will visit, and details of excursions through their My Viking Journey portal on their web site. Since anticipation is a fun part of any trip, the portal really whets your appetite for the upcoming trip. Embarkation is beyond smooth. Our bags were whisked away to our cabin even before we climbed out of the cab that Viking had sent to pick us up at the airport. The ship, small by ocean cruse ships, was beautifully appointed and more than large enough to comfortably accommodate our 181 fellow passengers. Our cabin was very comfortable (loved the heated floor in the bathroom), pristinely clean, and taken care of by a steward who moved in and out quite unobtrusively with fresh flowers, fruit, and linens. The dining room was large enough to accommodate all guests at the same time, and there were no assigned tables/seating. The food was much better that any ocean cruise ship we've been on, and while there were not dozens of choices at each meal, there were more than enough to satisfy. Viking brings local artisans and artists onboard to entertain. From glassblowing to German folk music to classical strings, each experience was most enjoyable. The shore excursions were spot on. They showed us the medieval Europe that we came to see. Perhaps the most important thing here is that my husband is disabled (but not wheel chair bound). He was able to move about the ship easily. He was able to go on all of the included excursions (thanks to the "E" group that saw all the same sites as everyone else, but at a slower pace), and several of the optional excursions as well. The onboard staff as well as the tour guides and drivers were exceptionally knowledgeable, accommodating, and in most instances, just down right fun. We've already booked our next cruise - on the Danube! Read Less

A river cruise was attractive based on the size of vessel, the variety and attractiveness of destinations and number of destinations on a single trip. Had seen Viking advertisements over the years and had identified as something we were interested in. Europe has been a targeted destination for years. The shore excursions included in the package were very good. They involved bus travel, walking and biking if you were interested. They gave you a good sense of your port destination and allowed plenty of time for your own exploration. We fully expect to take another Viking cruise in the future and have felt very comfortable recommending them to others. As a cautionary statement, while airport layovers are no fun, we would recommend allowing a little more time between flights going over as we missed our connection at Heathrow and almost didn't make embarkation. The extra days in Amsterdam at the end of our cruise were good idea. Viking was helpful in arranging transportation to airport even though had been off the boat for two days. Read Less

I always heard great reviews about Viking river cruises and perhaps I was expecting too much. I found the service on board the ship to actually be less than what we've received on Royal Caribbean or even Carnival. Our room was ok although we had to have them give us a clean duvet because ours had a huge footprint on it. That night I was too warm so the next morning I asked for a light blanket which they gave me but then took away the duvet so when the weather turned colder I froze. An extra blanket in the room would have been nice or even a sheet on the bed. There was no follow up to see if everything was ok. Another time we returned from an excursion and stood in line for the buffet only to have to wait several times because they ran out of items. You would think they would be prepared. The dinners were not all that great except for the last night. I had told them about my food allergies before the cruise but when I arrived no one seemed to know anything about them or asked me about them. My husband is lactose intolerant (which many people are) and he never could have the soup or most of the desserts. When he told the chef of his plight and suggested that it would be nice to have some selections that didn't include cream, the chef said he could leave it out of the recipe. Unfortunately leaving something out of the original recipe just doesn't taste right. An alternative selection would have been better. On the day that we sailed along all the castles, most everyone sat on the upper deck to see and hear about them ( which was excellent). It was very hot and not everyone could sit under the canopy. No one came around to offer water or drinks. When someone finally came with water the passengers all applauded. My husband and I filled out the survey at the end of the cruise and have also told our travel agency about our experiences. I have heard back from them but not a word from Viking. Kind of makes you think they really aren't interested in improving their cruise experience or they don't really care. Will I go one another Viking cruise? Probably not. Am I glad I went? Yes. I don think I could have seen all the sights I did. The excursions were good. So if you think that you'll be treated like "royalty" as some have mentioned, this may not be the case. Read Less

We saw a 2 for 1 deal and decided to try it. Read about Viking and saw many commercials but when I had several people tell me they just returned from a viking river cruise and loved it we were certain it was going to be great. We loved the small ship and less people onboard for a week of sailing. The Viking cruise line is a well oiled machine that runs like clockwork. We had a fabulous time and if there were any questions they were answered promptly. The excursions were very good, the food was fabulous, and the boat was very smooth, never felt any movement. We paid the extra $50 for airfare so we could decide on our flights and make changes if we needed to. This was wonderful and worth every penny. I did feel a few times that the physical ability of some guests may have caused them to not be able to participate in some of the excursions due to the walking and uneven road surfaces at the castles. It is stated in the description of the excursions how difficult they are or are not. But felt that some people should have be more prepared for the degree of difficulty. We had good entertainment, a classical night, a few game nights, cooking, etc, then there was always a pianist at the end of the night. I might suggest he learn a few more songs as we heard the same music every single night. The Viking Kara ship was always clean, never saw anything that would cause us to complain. There was some bird poo on the one dining window but don't know how they were going to clean that on our cruise ,so just looked past it! George was our program director and was a wonderful addition to the ship, we felt he did a top notch job. We had a small glitch at the start of our stay where our room was not available immediately but he treated us to a drink while they worked on the situation and then had a bottle of champagne and chocolates placed in our room for our inconvenience. That was a nice touch and we appreciated it. The bartenders, servers, chef, cooks, and housekeepers, captain and all others are so nice and funny and wiling to share their stories if you ask. They are amazing people. We will be traveling with viking again in the near future, and encourage others to try it for themselves. Read Less
