Rhine & Viking Shores & Fjords (Basel to Bergen) We planned our three week trip exclusively through Viking Cruises using AAA as our agent, and took the afore mentioned vacation May 29 - June 16. Our flights were purchased through Viking Air and we flew United out and IcelandAir home. We booked a pre extension to Lake Como for three days, we stayed at the Lake Como Sheraton hotel. Our Viking host was Lott, he was absolutely fabulous in every possible way and we were treated like family. He took us on an optional tour of the area surrounding the hotel which included his pointing out the local grocery store, coffee shop and several restaurant choices. The regular tours were a great deal of fun and our group of passengers had a lot of fun getting to know one another. The first full day Lott had a welcome party where he served a drink and some snacks, he also walked with us to another town along the water where many of had dinner that evening. The final day we boarded our motor coach for our trip through the alps to Basel, we made several stops including a lunch planned by Viking in Zurich which was wonderful. Lott brought along chocolates and a liquoir for us to share a final drink together and a sweet farewell. I cannot sing his praises enough he was more than a host he was a member of the little family that would enjoy the remaining two weeks together. We boarded the Viking Hiln in Basel and started the next leg of our journey, the ship was all we expected having cruised on a longship two years ago. We were not as thrilled with this itinerary as our time spent on the Rhône previously but could not fault the ship for that. We found the crew on board to be a little cold and almost felt like a bother if you tried to engage anyone with a question or comment. The food was good but not as many choices as we had just two years ago, plenty to eat as always. We sat with our friends from The Lake Como extension in the back of the dining room at several tables. We upgraded our cabin for this trip and had a balcony which we really enjoyed, we had plenty of room for our clothing and the bathroom met our needs. We were supposed to transfer from the Hiln to the Jupiter in Amsterdam and hoped to spend the afternoon touring in the city. A lock was broken so the Hiln put us off in Rotterdam and we were bussed to Amsterdam, the delay did not leave us much time in Amsterdam but we did get a canal ride in before sailaway. This was our first cruise on Viking Ocean and all I can say is WOW, the ship was beautiful and our cabin was lovely. The food and service were very nice and our evening in Manfredis was spectacular. We attended the cruise critic party and met the captain and his wife, who were very social. Viking had one of the nicest events I have attended with drinks and hors d’oeuvres with a very small turnout. The food in the buffet was great and we never struggled to find a table even when we were meeting friends. The ship had many places you could meet and be the only people there, we never felt crowded except at the shows in the evening when if you did not arrive twenty minutes early you very often would stand. We found the shows to be just okay, entertaining, but the the best show starred our energetic and amazing cruise director, Ship Happens production. The free spa area was so enjoyable, the heated pool, the sauna, snow room and steam room were enjoyed by all in our party. Don’t miss it... Our itinerary for this cruise was terrific but our favorite spot was Flam, Norway, we would recommend this trip the fjords were beautiful and different. We disembarked the Jupiter and Viking took us to the airport in Bergen where we boarded an IcelandAir flight to Reykjavik, Iceland for our three night stay at the Grand Hotel. Our host here was a huge disappointment after our wonderful experience with Lott in Lake Como, he left when the tour was over and arrived when it was time to get on the bus. He was very informative and funny but just not as invested. Iceland was interesting and we enjoyed learning about this country, the tours were long days on the bus which was necessary to see everything. The hotel was a huge disappointment, we have stayed with Viking in Paris and Lake Como and were surprised at the difference in service, amenities and cleanliness at this hotel. They were changing the carpets in the hallways and had rolls of carpet old and new in the hallways. The lobby was a mess as the hotel always had bus loads of people arriving or departing with their luggage everywhere. The staff that worked there were not a happy crew and complained out loud about the management or lack there of. I would hope that Viking will not continue to use this hotel because it was not up to par with their usual hotels. We had an amazing vacation and met some wonderful people who we hope to see again, I look forward to cruising both on the river and ocean with Viking again. Read Less

Got a cabin cancellation three weeks out, seemed like a good deal. Cabin 119 with just a small window was fine. Viking did an outstanding job, everything exceeded my expectations, this was our first river cruise and our first visit to central Europe. Candi, the cruise director was extremely organized, loved the QuietVOX RF receiver/headphone system. We only did included excursions which we enjoyed., they were well run, we had enough time in each port. Buses were extremely well run when used. Ship looks like new, food was excellent, service was excellent. The only thing I can think of for Viking to improve is to lower the price! We loved small German towns, we found Basel to be very expensive, restaurants in city seem to be about twice what we are used to in rural Virginia. God willing we'll be going on more Viking cruises. Misc: for the first time we did laundry every night on the ship, rapid dry clothes dry in less than 4 hours, cotton underwear, socks and shirts take 20 hours. We used the heated bathroom floor to finish dry the socks and underwear. There was a clothes line in the shower. Loads of hot water, loads of water pressure from shower head. Read Less

First Viking cruise. Low water meant a move Wed from Hiln to Kara with a local ship cruise down that part of the Rhine we could not sail on. We missed little although there were issues with locks in Amsterdam diverting ship from there to Rotterdam and not being told, the low river water and the ship swap and some foggy weather. Oh and a French police strike in Colmar. But through it all our cruise director Candi kept it all moving - kudos to the crews for effortlessly handling everything. Both ships had great crews - we loved the team on the Hiln though - and despite a review to the contrary - we liked them better than the crew on the Kara - but both were good. Ships very clean but sometimes musty smelling. We really disliked the cattle call meal times where everyone is called to eat at 7 and it's like a game of musical chairs. Ugh. Food was ok - a B. The chef on Kara was better over all. Tour guides are simply amazing - wow - real quality. That made things so worthwhile. Bottom line would we cruise Viking again? If there are going to ports we want to see yes. But not one of those folks that pick a different Viking Cruise every year as some do. They are not that good. Viking could learn dining from Holland with their Any Time plan, the quality of their food and the way they serve buffets. And Holland crews are simply amazing. Read Less

This was my second Viking Cruise. I chose Viking again because the first cruise was so great. But in the three years between the cruises, Viking services deteriorated to the extent that I will never take a Viking cruise again. While the staff was friendly and nice, the service and food were mediocre. I never met my room steward. I could have handled the fact that the Rhine River was so low we had to leave our ship mid-cruise and board another ship (can't control weather) but we weren't even offered a travel voucher for our trouble. Every other person on every other line that I met who traveled when the Rhine conditions were not great received a travel voucher for future travel even if they weren't inconvenienced as we were. We were compensated with some free wine one night. Whoopee! The first time I traveled with Viking, the wine was free all the time! And I don't limit my critique to the cruise. Every time I contacted Viking ahead of time for more information or advice, I was given the same response, which was "I don't know." My theory is that Viking has chosen money over service. I would chose the opposite. Additionally, my husband couldn't travel with me and we had to use our travel insurance for reimbursement for his part of the trip. I got back less than the cost of the travel insurance, Very different from when my friend sought reimbursement for their Viking River Cruise and got the whole thing back - but that was four years ago. Viking has changed. They aren't worth it any longer. Try another cruise line. If Viking continues in this vein, they won't be around much longer anyway! Read Less

Where to start? I have good and bad experiences on my Rhine Getaway. Even before stating I asked my sales consultant about the water levels and was told that a ship swap was a distant possibility. And if I chose to cancel or rebook I would lose the total amount. SO I proceeded to "enjoy" my Rhine river getaway. First let me say that we did indeed swap ships. This gave us a unique perspective to compare two ships and staff. The first ship the KARA was beautiful and the front desk, waiters, and bartenders, were beautiful in spirit and accommodating our every request. We purchased the silver drink package (150 per person) and I can report to you that it was a bargain, as there are eaters and drinkers and we are definitely drinkers. SO if you enjoy drinks you must purchase this package. OK so we are on the KARA, for two days and then we are told that we will do a ship sway. So here we go packing everything again. And we need to be bussed to the next ship. As a result we had to leave the people with whom we became friends, (the ships staff), and boarded a bus for a long trip to our reduced excursion. I cried when we left that friendly staff. They even got a cab to deliver our lost luggage and deliver it to the next port of call. And did our laundry for free while the bags were lost. AND even members of the crew offered their personal clothing until ours arrived. The KARA crew was EXCELLENT. God how I will miss them. OK so reduced time at our next excursion, back on a bus and then we boarded the HLIN. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!!! I expected the bartenders and staff to be "same but different". Now I am an outgoing and friendly guy but almost IMMEDIATELY I found the attitude VERY DIFFERENT and cold. This was not just my opinion, but ALL of the fellow passengers with whom I came into conversation with. If it were just me, I could write it off BUT is was unanimous! Even the guests in the SUITE at the rear of the ship (the executive presidential suite), the largest in the ship, with whom we became friends, said that the bartender was downright RUDE. They had planned to go on another Viking cruise and were making plans told me that they will go one Tauk or Crystal instead. They told me that that trip was around 25K and they planned to "vote with their wallets". And eschew any future Viking cruises. As I said before we were one of the lucky ones who went on the Rhine. Our captain told us the Elbe and Danube were now completely closed to river traffic of large ships. One a positive note I spent MANY hours in the wheelhouse with out captain, Adam, who as an engineer appreciates all the technical details of captaining a longboat. Radar, FLIR, river navigation systems, sonar, and all the logistics were explained to me. As we became closer he showed me pictures of his beautiful Polish wife and handsome son. For me this was the best part of the cruise. The captain on the HLIN made this ship OK for me but the rest forget it. We made friends with a guest who was a professional chef and he had "words" with the HLIN chef about things I dont know about like the temperature of a "sear". I tried the "stew" which consisted of boiled cubes of some kind of meat, cubed potatoes and carrots in a broth. NOT stew in my definition. Almost the same meals every day. Now I am very easy to please BUT if you are looking for above average meals, you wont find it here. I did the poached salmon almost every night. My wife had a "ribeye, which she could not eat. Our table guests looked at the food presented and many had the ceaser salad instead which was actually pretty good. So would I do it again you are asking. Are you sitting down? IF and this is a big IF Viking makes it worth my while I may consider them again. But after reading the other reviews and what Viking did after they returned home, I think not. Now I know that Viking can not control the water levels, but that is not the issue. The insincerity and holding back of information is what I have an issue with. They got our money and it seems that it was all they wanted. It was MUCH worse for the Danube travelers. All in alI guess I was pretty lucky in the end. Read Less

I choose it as a first timer to Europe. To have home base and cover several countries was wonderful. The quality of the excursions exceeded our expectations. It was a terrific combination of R and R, fun and education. The staff on the cruise was outstanding. They new all of our names within a day and our favorite beverage. It was fun to see our favorites each day. We liked that it was all inclusive and paid for prior to the cruise. We didn't have to deal with charges, extras, etc. We were concerned we might be the youngest demographic on the boat but were surprised by the mix. A few younger, many older but all pretty mobile and active. The services did a nice job dividing us into groups for the daily excursions. We felt like we were with the most active group which was important to us. We look forward to our next river boat cruise. Read Less

This was our second Viking River Cruise. In October 2017, we went on our first Viking River Cruise on the Danube River. The Rhine River cruise was as just as enjoyable as our first one. We started our cruise in Basel , Switzerland and finished in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The tours were wonderful and the food, service, and accommodations on Viking Hlin. We were scheduled to cruise on Viking Kara, but switched to Viking Hlin because the water level on the Rhine River was low because of the summer draught in Western Europe. We were very pleased with the way Viking runs their river cruise and enjoyed every minute of it. The food and accommodations on Viking Hlin were wonderful. The entertainment on the ship was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Despite the low water levels, we were able to do our entire cruise itinerary and visit all the stops that were on the original river cruise schedule. Our only complaint was that it ended far too quickly. Read Less

Everything about this cruise was awesome! Beautiful and clean ship, wonderful staff, delicious food and interesting fun excursions. Viking saw that ever detail was handled with perfection. On the excursions Viking chose friendly and very knowledgeable excursion guides. Each one lives in the area and were a wealth of knowledge and information about the area and the sites we were touring. They interacted with the group and answered questions. Group sizes were kept at smaller numbers for a more personal tour experience. Dining was amazing! They prepared wonderful buffets and off the menu selections. The waitstaff were so friendly and accommodating, as was everyone who worked on the ship. Our program director George was so helpful and a great fellow. He certainly worked hard to make the trip great for us. What a great personality he has. I wondered if he ever took any time to rest. He made it a point to interact with each guest. We extended the stay in Amsterdam and Viking took care of all transportation back to the airport and even walked into airport with us to direct us where to go . The ship program director was most interesting on pre- excursion history of what we would see and the history of the location. Ya gotta do this cruise. It's amazing to watch the staff work and benefit from their efforts. Everything is spotless. Everything is on time. Everything we ate were superb. Most of the tours were good and two of the tour guides - Natasha (Black Forest) and Udo (Cologne) were exceptional. The staterooms while small (in comparison to a hotel room) were luxurious and kept spotless. The amount of information provided to us in advance of our cruise was incredible and every time we called for additional information we were treated courteously and given good information. We were fortunate enough to book our flight through Viking and we had some of the best flights we've ever taken in terms of schedule. The shore excursions were on time and informative. Viking does it right as most of the excursions are all run by their employees and you can tell they love their jobs. The food was exceptional prepared the way you liked it and plenty of it. The ship was really quiet as when you were under power you never heard it. When they docked you never felt the banging and jarring as you feel on other ships. They are amazing shipmates. During the sail days the cruse director was very informative as what we were passing by, mostly castles and talking about the history of them. Also talked about the towns we passed. She was great with keeping us informed without being annoying. I’m summary it was the best cruse, love the small format of ship, never really felt like we were being hearded like cows as you do on the monster ships . Read Less

We've always wanted to see the areas included in the Rhine River Cruise. We were not disappointed because everything was beautiful. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated all week and were able to spend one lovely afternoon up on the deck as the ship slowly passed by many, many hillside castles. The food was delicious and the staff were fun & friendly. Unfortunately my husband was having some health issues prior to this vacation and Viking provided exceptional accommodations for anyone with "special needs." We never missed out on anything that the other tours saw but we were able to walk around at a slower pace, take ramps & elevators when others used stairs, and even had mini-vans transport us to bus locations when others had to walk there. We were certainly impressed and would highly recommend Viking cruises (we've done their river & ocean itineraries and absolutely loved all of them). Read Less

We added a dinner in Rudesheim excursion and it was just what we wanted to be a part of. It was a fun night in a small German town with lots of music, authentic food and drink. I was not in my best walking form so the day I chose not to leave the ship was still enjoyable. The staff made sure I was comfortable, and well fed as well. We extended our stay in Lucerne. The wait staff and service people were friendly and daily went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. The shore excursions were all top notch, my wife was unable to participate in all of them because of her being on a cane. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the cruise director was amazing! There was a tremendous variety of food and most of it was great. A few of the meat dishes were a disappointment, perhaps over cooked, especially the veiner schnitzel. People were friendly but it would have helped to have name tags. There was too much difference in ability levels for the tours; we are physically fit and some people could barely walk. The talks on board and the tour guides were very informative. I learned a lot! We are 'sold' on Viking. This was our second river cruise and we have also taken one ocean cruise with them. The service from the crew is outstanding and they go an extra mile for their passengers. The ship is light, airy and always being cleaned. You will find that 80% of passengers are American, some from New Zealand and Australia and probably about 10% from Britain. Previously we have found the age group to be 60's and over but this time there were definitely more under 40's and several teenagers. Everyone talks to everyone else and I think it would be fine to travel as a single person as you would not feel lonely or left out. There is not a huge amount of entertainment and mostly provided by the resident pianist or local groups brought on board for the evening. Clothing in the evening is supposed to be smart casual. However, I saw people in shorts and teenagers in 'cut offs', so as long as you look clean and tidy, I think you can get away with anything. Certainly don't bother with a jacket and tie for men or anything sparkly for women. People say that Viking are expensive. I don't agree - once on board you don't pay for anything else and there are many extras. For example, we all sat on deck whilst cruising the middle Rhine and it was a tad chilly. Soon, blankets were brought round for us and 20 minutes later, hot chocolate with amaretto. We travelled from Amsterdam to Basel and then added two nights in Lucerne. Beware that Switzerland is extremely expensive. We paid about £17 for an ordinary pizza and coffee comes in at about £4 a cup. The hotel in Lucerne was expensive too - it cost us £400 each for two nights with breakfast - but now I realise why. The Continental Park is well placed in the centre of the town and right near the train station - go on any escalator down to the station and you will find 2 supermarkets and many other shops. The staff were very helpful but I'm not sure I like their idea of 'cool lighting' in the bedrooms. This was a very bright red fluorescent strip along the wall behind the bed and a very bright blue strip opposite. There was an almost spotlight effect over the bed if required and two very dull bedside lights. As we were there in June, the evenings were light so we managed with just the bedside lights. Of the trips that Viking offer - if you can ride a bike, then take the cycling round Kinderdijk and also the e-bike through the Black Forest. The e-bike was the highlight of our cruise. The weather was perfect - we started along the Rhine, then went inland through farmlands of apple trees, asparagus etc. There was an included coffee stop with huge slices of cake and other treats at the farm shop (after about an hour), then on through lovely villages for the lunch break (an included cooked meal), then along a valley in the Black Forest to reach a farm high in the hills (no trouble getting up there on an e-bike - and we are 'occasional' cyclists over 60) where we sampled various cheeses. A bus collected us and drove us back to the boat as we had completed our cycle of about 25 miles. It may seem expensive but really, it was wonderful. Read Less

The shore excursions were informative but the best times were sitting at dinner meeting and talking with new friends or on the top deck watching the sites. The night spent in the Rudisheim open air restaurant was beyond fun. The friends we met have already discussed doing it again next year as we will. The boat ride is so smooth you don't know you are moving. The staff couldn't be more accommodating and the food selections were some of the best I've ever eaten. We chose a lower level smaller room because we knew we wouldn't be in it other than to sleep. Since most shore excursions, meals and wine are included we didn't incurr any extra expenses. I would recommend this type of cruise. Read Less

Wanted to do a Rhine River cruise, so we joined friends who had already booked this cruise. We were impressed with Viking's treatment of their customers from the time of our arrival to our extended trip to Lucerne, Switzerland. They really know how to take care of their people. Our program director, Daniella, was totally awesome. She was a very caring person who was never in a hurry when you wanted to talk to her. Cruising the middle Rhine and seeing all the castles, quaint towns and churches, as well as all the terraced vineyards lining the hillsides was like being in a fantasy land - totally lovely and breathtaking. The shore excursions were all wonderful experiences. We loved visiting Cologne's Cathedral - just wish we had a little more time there. Marksburg castle was quite an experience. Heidelberg was another favorite. We were delighted to be in Strasbourg to see the cathedral and the quaint storefronts. Colmar was also a very quaint place to visit. We went into the Unterlinden museum to view all the beautiful religious art, and that was very impressive. The Black Forest was a beautiful ride! We loved Switzerland and did the Pearls of Switzerland all day tour. Beautiful! Our favorites were visiting the monastery in Einsiedeln, as well as the dairy farm, and the milk processing plant. My cruise mate saw this cruise advertised and she asked if I wanted to join her and I said sure, why not! Having seen Viking river cruises advertised on my PBS channel gave me a hint to what was expected knowing it would be wonderful! The anticipation of our journey from booking till the cruise was well worth it when we were thrilled by our Rhine trip. The boat was very spacious for the 188 passengers and the staff made you feel welcome and like family! The excursions were fun and informative. Thicker soled shoes would have been better on all of the cobblestone streets and preparing more for all of the walking is advised. Spending a day on the mid-Rhine would have been enhanced by some history of the castles and towns seen perhaps via our listening devices. You won't find better food anywhere than on a Viking cruise. Many meals were absolutely outstanding warranting seconds. The desserts were incredible! From head chef to wait staff all were excellent and accommodating to your every need. The wine and beer selections with meals added to the fine dining experience. Both menu offerings and buffet selections gave you many options for a great meal! The room accommodations were more than adequate since you spend so little time there. The common areas on the boat gave you space to relax and meet the other passengers. We have a list of other Viking cruises that we want to take including the Danube and a Greece trip. Viking cruises met every expectation for a wonderful time! Read Less

I was initially worried that there might be some problems or glitches because neither my wife nor I speak German, French, or Dutch. We were very grateful that ALL of the staff spoke English well and were very knowledgeable and helpful. The guides on the shore excursions were very careful that no one got lost or was left behind. One of the main highlights was the excellent food. The chef aboard the Hlin is a master. Additionally, he also has many excellent assistants. We enjoyed interacting with Candie Finkelstein, the hostess on board. We appreciated Candie's briefings on the nights before the shore excursions, telling us what to expect, what we needed to do, and also warning us about any potential dangers or pitfalls. Her advice about being wary of pickpockets outside the Cologne cathedral was especially valuable - we saw multiple people on that excursion that we very wisely avoided. I don't recall the captain's name, but I was very impressed with his professional competence and his friendliness toward all of his passengers. I don't want to forget the housekeeping staff. They all impressed me as being very hard working, very helpful, and very friendly. To sum up, my wife and I CAN'T WAIT to go on our next Viking cruise! You will definitely see us again. Read Less

Our first Viking cruise - starting in Amsterdam, traveling down the Dutch canals and then onto the Rhine River ending in Basel Switzerland. We chose Veranda B suite on 3rd level and found views superior to lower levels. We are foodies and found meals and included wine and beer to be outstanding and varied over our 7 day cruise. Service excellent. Most of the tours were well organized and insightful. We especially liked the Marksburg Castel. Also recommend the Bruhl Palace as an added option. We chose to spend 2 days in in Amsterdam that included a trip to Kuekenhof tulip gardens and dinners at two excellent seafood restaurants. We also stayed a day and a half in Basel. Our hotel offered free tram and bus passes and 1/2 off museum tickets around the city. Suggest seeing the Kunst museum, cathedral overlooking Rhine River, and the Rathaus, among others. Basel was very easy to get around for newbies and offers a great original medieval city dating to preRoman times. Hotels are very reasonable in Basel but food is expensive. Seemed to be similar prices whether modest cafe or well known restaurant. We are looking forward to trying another cruise in the future. Read Less

Loved Basel and our extra time there and in Amsterdam! Loved seeing the sights along the river.Enjoyed the museums and tours. The tours were great and we enjoyed meeting people on the cruise. There is plenty of time to relax, read, and enjoy the lounge. The service was excellent and staff was friendly. All meals were delicious and there were plenty of choices to accommodate all diets and allergies. The ratio of staff to passengers is amazing and all staff seemed to enjoy the chance to make our trip a special one. The "extra" tours were worth the money. Would recommend that people wear sturdy and comfortable shoes for walking on the cobblestones! Don't underestimate the toll on your feet! It was lots warmer than we thought when packing so think "layers" when you pack! This was our second river cruise with Viking and we will go again! Maybe France next time! Read Less
