We missed about 30% of the planned itinerary, including no stop in Casilda. Our trip was cut short as soon as we arrived, by 6 hours. We spent way too much time aboard ship and our land time was constantly changed and shortened. The cruise directors were very flippant about the reasons. We missed a wonderful concert in Cienfuegos due to a guide or tour director’s mistake and were left behind to take a taxi to the venue, with a guest lecturer and another guest. No apologies from Pearl Mist staff. The advertised gym was a few pieces of broken and/or rusted equipment, covered and unusable for a good part of the trip due to wind or rain. MOST IMPORTANT, many passengers got a terrible respiratory and stomach infection. I got very sick myself. There were a lot of leaky air conditioners. Our room smelled moldy and mildewed. The carpet was damp and dirty in places. The crew was evasive about what was making so many people sick. The nurse actually stated that “Cuba is hot and the ship is air conditioned.” We live in Florida! That being said, the waitstaff, housekeepers and the 2 entertainers worked really hard and were excellent. Cuba is well worth visiting, but not on Pearl Mist. We paid fora 5***** experience. The Pearl Mist and Pearl Seas Cruise Line represent a missed opportunity. This cruise missed the mark in several ways, but fulfilled many of my main goals for the cruise: the food was great and so was the room turn-down service. Every day the dining room was open for about 2 hours for each meal. There was no assigned seating and it was never dressy. The service was expedient and the food was varied and almost always very good if at the very least acceptable. The staff taking care of the rooms did an excellent job and were just and friendly and nice as the wait staff. So why is this review a “poor”? Just about everything else. The Pearl Mist was built in 2007, but actually went into service in 2014 due to a legal dispute that like everything else on this cruise is poorly explained with murkey details. The ship is small. Really small. With three lounges and a fourth being used as a storeroom, this vessel was designed to rely on ports to entertain people. The rooms were small but not intolerable and all but one have a balcony. The beds were very comfortable but the furniture was dated, and the comically small TV in all the rooms had a screen smaller than my laptop’s but a wide variety of cable channels. There’s a small desk and the bathroom is a nice size. The lounges are also fairly nice with comfy couches and then less comfy chairs along with a veritable vending machine of snack foods and canned drinks. No part of the ship exceeds one floor, which leads to a very claustrophobic feeling unless you go to the top. There’s also only one elevator and it was closed without announcements twice during the cruise - it’s a long walk from the cabins on the fifth floor to the first floor dining room. The real problems with cruising aboard the Pearl Mist started once we left the port. First, our schedule was changed without notice such that we lost days in all of our Cuban ports and added an afternoon in Freeport. Our room was also changed two days before the cruise without notice, apparently even to the baggage people who delivered our luggage to our old room, and then took ages to deliver it to our real room. The sea days were painful with few activities. There is no pool, there is no theatre. There are lectures and Boards games. The lecturers were quite good on the history of Cuba and eniriched the cruise greatly - the board games were fine. After two consecutive sea days we arrived only minutes late to Santiago De Cuba. This was my favourite port at which we stopped as we had a full day of excursioning and entertainment off the ship at a local hotel. Speaking of entertainment, the entertainers aboard our vessel performed almost every night on two electric guitars and seemed keen to play the same songs almost every night. Because the cruise was to Cuba most of the shore excursion were run by their government and went like clockwork. However, the lack of information given to us made it difficult to arrive to tours on time or even know where a tour was going and how to get there. Most of our shore excursions were quite good, except for Cienfuegos where they didn’t go to the botanical gardens and instead we were guided around a crowded shopping district. Why couldn’t we go to the garden? Apparently it was Christmas Eve and all the guides were off celebrating. That would make sense except the other ship in the port had 3 excursions to the same botanical garden throughout the day. The concealing actions taken by the cruise directors were routine and made the cruise difficult on and off the ship. We were seldom told when we were delayed and even less frequently why. No matter what we never received an apology for tardiness and lack of organization. We probably lost 3 hours in our ports because of various uncategorized delays that were never explained or acknowledged by the cruise directors. Some would blame this in the Cuban government’s disorganization, but when we had the misfortune of visiting Freeport (which is a real harbour with a large harbour authority) we docked a full 45 minutes late. We visited Freeport to (I guess) make up for the day we seemed to loose in Havana (this is all extrapolation because we were never told about it). Apparently the Cubans bumped our boat out of Havana harbour early so we only had 7 or 8 daylight hours in what was supposed to be the centerpiece of our Cuba cruise. Then we went to Freeport, packed onto rented busses, went to two destinations before the drivers decided it was too dark and late and brought us back to the ship halfway through the tour - all while our cruise directors went out on the town to party. Freeport was the low of our cruise and it was the product of an ill conceived schedule change that was never explicitly acknowledged or apologized for. This schedule and contempt passenger care meant we spent double the time on our “Cuba Cultural Voyage” at sea as we did in Cuba. Some of these changes would have been acceptable if we had known in advance and properly compensated. These were rookie errors that stemmed from inexperienced, poorly trained, and probably underpaid cruise directors. The Captain of our ship was also absent from any anncouncement other than one he made announcing a delayed arrival to Havana that was then further delayed afterwards. Despite a day of tough seas that the ship handled so ungracefully that Dramamine was out in a tin at the front desk, we were never contacted by the bridge apologizing for the weather or reassuring us that the ship wasn’t going to sink, instead just endless intercom reminders to hold onto the handrails. The failures of our managing crew and the extreme upscale pricing of this voyage make it impossible to recommend. This cruise ship was a fantastic, if not overpriced, upscale hotel - it was the sailing that sunk this ship. It’s frustrating because the dining room, bar, and cabin staff were an oasis in the desert of success that defined this cruise experience. Furthermore the schedule on their website was nothing like what we actually experienced, we skipped three of their listed days. The cruise attempted to waste our time to stretch this beleaguered journey to 11 days. We lost 1/2 our time in Cuba for reasons we will never know. While your experience may very, our time with Pearl Seas will most certainly be the last. With the schedule we endured, and the possibility that the schedule could change without notice, I can’t recommend this cruise to anyone. It was neither what I paid for nor what I expected. Read Less

Summary This Cuba “experience” is marred by deceptive advertising, bait-and-switch promises and on-ship excuses. Look at Oceania cruises for alternative Cuba cruises recommended by people who have gone on both. The bottom line is that while shipboard accommodations are excellent, this small ship is at the mercy of the Cuban government, which favors larger ships in its limited ports. You don’t learn about the actual cruise itinerary until it’s too late to cancel. Report Card (see below for detail) Time in Port/Excursions D- Embarkation / Debarkation process C Staterooms A Staff A Food B+ Amenities A to C- Overall D Time in Port/Excursions The good news is that all excursions are included at no charge. The bad news is that many never happened: Hemingway’s house, the visit to Cojimar, the Botanical Gardens and the waterfalls of El Nicho were nixed. The Cuban government was blamed for limiting time in port. In most ports there are only one or two docks and Cuban guides informed us that the larger cruise lines were favored and given precedence. The disappointment was palpable as item after item was take off the itinerary… AFTER the cruise began. In at least one case (the Botanical Gardens at Cienfuegos) we were told that the Gardens were closed because the local personnel had the day off as a holiday. However, another cruise ship was in port and we saw at least four of their tour buses with “Botanical Gardens” in their windows. The three scheduled days completely at sea became a total of five, with several half days. Bear in mind that Pearl Mist has been traveling to Cuba for two years and is fully aware of Cuban government policies. If there are disclaimers about itinerary changes on their website, I can’t find them. This tactic is nothing short of deceptive. Embarkation / Debarkation Poor communication and bad execution caused significant disruption in boarding the ship. Late arrival of the previous cruise caused long delays sitting in hotel lobbies waiting for pickup. One bus got lost on the way to the port. The scheduled dinner on board became “call and order a hamburger or sandwich brought to your room.” Not an auspicious beginning. That said the debarkation was fairly smooth. Staterooms The staterooms were a pleasant surprise: spacious, quiet, clean and comfortable. We were able to move completely out of our suitcases and store them under the bed. The bathroom is large and well-appointed. Each room has a nice balcony. While we were quite happy with our third-deck forward cabin, we heard from other passengers that the handicap-accessible cabins and single cabins were very cramped. Passengers in the rear of the ship complained of loud engine noise. Staff Clearly, the top marks for the cruise go to the cabin stewards and food servers. They were unfailingly responsive and cheerful—no request was turned down. The lecturers were outstanding and the Cruise Directors very helpful, although they took the brunt of the deceptive practices on and off the ship. Food We enjoyed all the food. Breakfast was delicious with a fruit/pastry bar and order-from-the-menu hot items which included all sorts of meats, eggs, waffles, pancakes and daily specials. The coffee was good. Lunch and dinner offered 2-3 appetizers, 4 entrees and 3 desserts. Half portions and double entrees were cheerfully available (one table ordered double lobster tails all around). Some people complained about the lack of selection compared to larger cruise ships. I’m a bit choosy and I felt the food was well-prepared with rare beef (if ordered) and perfectly cooked seafood. By the way, a seafood and a vegetarian selection was available at every meal. The only flaw that I could find is that the seasoning leaned a bit toward the bland, due (I’m guessing) to the preferences of most of the older passenger list. Amenities Shipboard amenities were a mixed bag. On the positive, all excursions were included in the price, there were virtually unlimited, quality liquor, decent wine and decent beer. Free room service for any meal was offered and your laundry was done free of charge. On the negative, the few exercise machines are in poor repair and placed in a virtually unusable location. There is no shipboard store. Entertainment was limited to a good duo, but got old quickly with 50s night, 60s night, 70s/80s night… you get the picture. The TV didn’t work half of the time and Internet access, while free was slow enough to make checking email painful. Overall If you want to spend time on the ground in Cuba, this is not the cruise for you. Don’t believe anything you see in the cruise descriptions. One of the best parts of the trip was talking with people who had extensive cruise experiences and gathering intel for other cruise lines and destinations. Getting beyond the poor itinerary and limited excursions, the cruising experience was quite nice with a few glaring problems which makes the high cost a bit painful. My advice is look elsewhere. Our cruise on the Pearl Mist was a serious disappointment, for two reasons. First, we didn't get the cruise for which we signed up. We reserved on information indicating that we would spend two full days and an evening of entertainment in Havana, and then one full day each in Santiago, Trinidad de Cuba and Cienfuegos. Instead, we got a half day and the evening of entertainment in Havana and an afternoon in Cienfuegos. There are times that my memory slips, so I thought maybe I did not remember correctly, but everyone with whom we spoke on the ship was also upset, saying they felt they had been denied the cruise for which they paid. We got an afternoon in Freeport as recompense for the lost day in Havana, but all that did was necessitate a prolonged trip across difficult seas in which a good percentage of the passengers, and even the cruise director, got terribly sick. The visit to Freeport, as lovely as it was for four hours on land, was not worth the discomfort. Second, the cruise management was terrible, from the pre-cruise arrangements at various Ft. Lauderdale hotels, right up to breakfast on disembarkation day. We were told dining room opened at 6 but it didn't open until 6:30. So we all stood around. In between, there were dozens of examples of mismanaged situations. Many small things that just weren't handled professionally or with any sense that these people had done this before. Our cabin was a good size and was comfortable, but the furniture drawers came without latches so that when seas were rough they were swinging open and closed. One passenger reported that his TV fell over because it hadn't been secured. The food was good but not spectacular, not as good as on other cruises I've taken with Princess and Viking. Embarkation was confused. The entertainment was dreadful. But the lectures by Prof. Richard Feinburg of UCSD were GREAT! He really gave us a sense of Cuba. The tour guides in Cuba were mostly below par, but the buses were good. The ship is too small to get a good walk in on the upper deck. The exercise machines are inadequate and poorly placed. The Wi-Fi rarely connected. The waiters were good, but there were too few to provide good service. Cabin staff was very conscientious. Worst of all was the staff reaction to expressed concerns. They were all young, probably 23-28, and relatively inexperienced. They could not provide any explanations for why things were the way they were and said that upper management had not provided any information. The captain was rarely seen. Laughably, the two most conscientious adults on the ship were the two musicians who performed every night. They also chipped in with passenger support and worked very hard to help people with issues. Kat, in particular, was an angel to our cabin neighbor who got VERY seasick. Some tips for anyone considering this cruise line: Read every line of every document you receive because they slipped the itinerary change into other documents rather than being upfront and direct. Be aware that this is a small ship, which has some advantages, but that it will also get knocked around in Cuban waters. Be aware that the passengers are mostly retirees. At 67, I was easily in the younger half of the passenger list. The passengers were great. They were all accomplished people, experienced travelers, friendly. We enjoyed ourselves. But younger people might want to skip this preview of life in a retirement home. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it focused on Cuba, not just a "sail by" with one stop, and we had been on this ship on the Great Lakes where it works in the summer. We liked the small boat, but be prepared for rock n roll on the open ocean- even in good weather. I never get sea sick, but lots of passengers did. The average age of the passengers was well into their 80s, about ten years older than my wife & I yielding lots of medical issues. A 20 minute bus stop on tour turned into an hour for all the passengers to offload and get back on. The young tour directors were frustrated by the "old" people, and were not real familiar with the places we visited. (They should take a tour as a passenger first). We had very high expectations for the very high price. That said, the crew was fantastic, ship very clean, and the ports very interesting. The food was ordinary-- no flavors, salt, etc. I am sure it was fit for many passengers, but not me. I like flavorful food, and local dishes, not food brought from Florida. Use caution with the departure hotel stay. They switched the hotel after booking but forgot to tell me or give hotel pick up instructions so we did not have to spend 2 hours at the airport figuring this out on our own. Read Less

We chose it because we had never been on an expensive luxury cruise before and wanted to treat ourselves. We liked that we could relax and be served at each meal and not have to deal with buffet lines. I was picturing outstanding gourmet meals in a lovely dining room with creative menus and desserts. Instead what we got at each meal was diner food. For instance when offered a seafood salad with shrimp/scallops etc...the shrimp was the size of your finger nail and the scallops were half of that size. Shrimp almost always had the same rub all over it. Here we were outside of the Quebec City at sailing time, a city with great French bread and every meal the breads were hard rolls and tasteless. They need to change their bread vendor asap! Now most of the folks on this cruise were in their 70's and above and many felt the food was good or they were being polite as we were, but believe me when I say it was not. Most of the meals were not bad but it was at best average. We found it odd that they asked you if you wanted half portions. If you asked for a half portion of salad or pasta it was about 1/2 to 3/4 cup. The chef did have some skills but the first day our chicken lunch was hard and my husband's hamburger was dry and tough. On the first night we ordered mushroom soup and it was virtually tasteless, I mean hardly any salt. I tried 3 more soups before giving up on the soups, roasted red pepper (no flavor), ham and pea soup (watered down to the point of being PALE green little taste and no ham) and French onion (3 tiny strips of onion in it and tasted like it came from a very salty can). All of the cake deserts were not as good as a Safeway store bought and were often dry. The only desert that was outstanding was peach cobbler and it was only offered once. Almost every dessert was served with the same creme anglais and a dollop of whipped cream. The breakfasts were great however and the servers were excellent. No tablecloths at breakfast or lunch, only dinner. We missed 3 ports due to weather but that is not the cruise line's fault. Still they said we could not go to Halifax due to a storm yet we sailed right by it to the next city. They may have lost their port. Forget about going to Isle de Madeline because the last two cruises didn't get to dock there and neither did we. The rooms were large but sparse and simple like a Motel 6, bare bones. Entertainment was the same every night but one, two guys playing their guitars and singing, 60's night, 70's night, Elvis night, you get it. Really hokey. Adriana the cruise director was a doll. We enjoyed our tour of the bridge and think the Captain and his crew were very capable. The lectures were very interesting. There was no fitness center or spa to get a massage. The only two treadmills were outside on a side deck and it was too cold to use them. They need to replace the carpet and furniture, pictures etc to update this cruise ship. I felt like a kid at a bad summer camp and just wanted to go home. I guess if we had not paid so much for the cruise and it were half the cost I would not be so upset about it but this cruise was not at all a good value for the money they charged. Read Less

Nobody to ask from Pearl Seas at Hotel and their office and ship not answering phone. First cruise I've ever been on that you didnt have a permanent bar. Each afternoon they set up a temporary bar for "cocktail hour" and later after dinner during entertainment. Wine served at meals poor quality. Carpet tired. balcony furniture chipped. Had a good time since we were traveling with a group who all new each other. Worse thing was that a member of our group who uses motorized wheelchair couldn't disembark at several ports. She was literaaly trapped on ship. This information was not furnished before the cruise even though all the right questions were asked. Promoted as luxurious and for good for senoirs. Falseadvertising Would never go on this line again and never reccomend it! Only good thing was the entertainent! Read Less

We went to Toronto for two days before the cruise and had a private tour. The following is a summary of our experience: 1. We had the unpleasant surprise of three days of swarming bugs in our cabin. Woke up with them on my face, the bed and pillow and on the wall. Problem was finally solved but left me shaken. Because of the bug issue, we were unable to use our veranda for the entire trip. The door was locked tight and sealed. 2. The kitchen ran out of bananas, strawberries, and had limited blueberries, and also ran out of fig Newton snacks. Since we were in port every day, this item could have been restocked by the ship. 3. The décor is depressing and dated in the cabin and public rooms. The palette is bland and looks like an old person decorated the entire place. Certainly not worth the upscale price. 4. We got short changed on Chicago. We were tendered which takes a bit of time and we did not get off the ship until late morning. Then after the 2 hours tour and lunch on our own, we had to get on the ship so we could sail to the other Chicago berth. There was no opportunity to explore Chicago on our own. The ship was docked too far away and too inconveniently. 5. The daily speaker, Richard, repeated himself at least three times in his three talks on each port. Somewhat boring and repetitive. 6. We had to ask for setups for tables almost daily to play games and cards. Also, there is too limited space for playing. Only one area to play comfortably. 7. The access to wi-fi and Internet is a disgrace, too slow and inconsistent availability plus have to log in every few minutes as getting access was terminated often. 8. The shower kept running hot and cold without warning and could have been dangerous. The pressure was weak. 9. We were overcharged and poorly handled when leaving the ship. We easily could have put all of our luggage and 4 people in one car, but we were forced to take 2. Worse, the taxis were at the gate at 4 a.m., but had to wait an hour and a half for an escort and we were concerned about missing our flight. We had asked the cruise director (Adriana) about just getting one car. She insisted that our luggage would not fit and we could not call an Uber as there was also an issue about getting by the entry gate and the company she used has no problem getting to the boat. They sent two 6-passenger SUV's with plenty of storage. We and all our luggage could have fit using just one transport. Two couples were each charged $160 and we feel that we are due back the price of one SUV ride so that our transportation fee would be $80 per couple. We have written to the ship twice to get a rebate for our double payment for the airport transfer but have not received a reply. Good luck taking this ship. Read Less

We heard it was a nice trip through the Great Lakes with lots of history, so we choose Pearl Seas Cruises after checking another lines out, cause even though it was more expensive, it looked to be a better boat with a good itinerary. First let me start off by saying from the book you received about the trip, it stated one day on the lakes with no stops, which was false advertising cause there was 2 days. Two of stops that were included on this trip, Sauté St Marie and Little Current there was nothing to see there and we spent several hours there. There was no one to give you the history of each stop, yes there was a little page that was put in your room each. Ignite giving you a little detail, but not much and the women they had on board to give lectures, didn't lecture about the area, in fact of the lectures was about the Titanic, which I thought was not appropriate. One day we spent more time going thru customs and waiting in line then actually at the Ford Musuem. Nigeria Falls was beautiful, but again you felt like you were rushed through it and did not get to see any of the area around there, which looked beautiful. The food was good and the wait staff and room steward was wonderful! It was also suggested that you tip $20 a day, which I though was high, considering the price we paid for the cruise. I tipped individually and gave a little as a whole. Read Less

I have always wanted to cruise the Great Lakes of Canada and the United States. This cruise became available and we bit the expensive fare to see the Great Lakes. Disappointment came almost immedicately with the person sent to pick us up. She was new and did not have adequate knowledge about the cruise. In fairness to her, she was one of the two weak musicians onboard. Boarding was acceptable in an out of the way port. Our cabine was very large and very clean. The TV in the cabin was not appropriate for such an expensive fare - a small 17 inch color TV with a DVD player. Dining was mediocre at best. Each day 3 choices that generally included fish, beef, and chicken. The service was outstanding in the dining room. Always a friendly face and eager to serve. There are two small rooms for evening drinks. One is on the second floor and one is on the forth floor. On at least two occasions the bar ran out of certain brands of liquor. They were generally prepared to offer most drink selections. Entertainment consisted of two singers with guitars. The male entertainer was better than the female. Two nights local entertainment was provided and very good. While most people pay $20,000 per cabin we assumed most excursions would be included. That was not the case. They provide some basic excursions such as trolley's that run a loop around town. Some have visits to the local sites. However, the nicer tours have charges. We assumed that we would have a tour around the islands of Parry Sound - only to find out we had to pay for the excursion. The fare charged was less than that charged if you did the excurison on your own. The Cruise Director was less than professional. She sat on the first floor, coordinated excursions and was available for questions most of the time. This cruise line is attractive for people that are over 75 years of age. Many are handicapped and require assistance. The crew did little to provide what I would consider miminal assistance. Often, there are gangplants and steps that need to be navigated. The process is time consuming and often very hard for those with walkers and wheel chairs. The recommended gratuity is $20 per day per person. I did not consider this to be an appropriate amount based on the cruise fare charged. If you need to fly from Chicago the minimum tine to the airport is one hour and thirty minutes - the cruse staff will tell you it takes 45 minutes. The best assets of this cruise were the room and wait staff that were eager to please, the larger cabins that were always cleaned and supplied, and the buses used for the tours each with an onboard toilet. Immigration services were a pain sometimes taking two hours. Whiile tour service on the Great Lakes might be limited the places that you get to see are great. I will not be returning with such high fares and limited services that are included in the base fare. Read Less

We took the Pearl Mist 11 night cruise from Chicago to Toronto last August 2018. This cruise is targeted for people 75 years an older, many of which need assistance. That's ok but it should be clearly stated. Let's start by saying the good things: 1) Stateroom and bathroom are very big. 2) Probably the best thing was the Staff, they are very friendly and helpful 3) Food was ok. 4) Drinks are included. 5) Some ports of call are very interesting: MACKINAC ISLAND, MUSKEGON / HOLLAND, Parry Sound and Niagara Falls. 6) Cruising the Welland Canal and going through 8 sets locks from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Now the bad things: 1) Overpriced at 20 grand per stateroom for and outed ship with little to do in it. It has no pool or good onboard activities. We spent 2 days cruising with little to do. The Gym consists of 4 machines located on and outside deck. 2) The TV in the stateroom is ridiculous 3) The ship is very small 108 cabins. 4) Some ports are call should be eliminated specially Sault Sainte Marie and Little Current. Nothing to do in them. 5) The time allocated in each destination is not well planned. We only spend 2-3 hours in Niagara that had a lot of activities to do and spend a full day at Sault Sainte Marie with almost nothing to do. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it offered 7 ports of call, more than any other cruise ship. Three of those ports Maria La Gorda, Parque de Nacional Alexandro de Humboldt and Holguin were unique to this cruise line. When we paid our deposit we received a letter saying we would have our final itinerary with excursion details 3 months before departure. We didn't receive details until 3 weeks before departure when we were informed that there would be only 4 ports of call and the 3 unique ones were cancelled. No explanation was offered. This change came after we had made our required final payment and after the time for cancellation with a refund had run. Customer service was nonexistent. We emailed Pearl Seas 2 times before the trip asking for an explanation of the new itinerary and a partial refund based on the reduction in ports and excursions (which were included in the price). No response. While onboard we were informed that the change was because of the Cuban government but we also learned that the 3 omitted ports had been omitted on every cruise the Pearl Mist took before our's in 2017. One of the cruise directors was unable to explain why we had not been notified earlier of the new itinerary but offered to send PS an email from the boat promising that they would get back to me with an explanation. They never responded. We went on the cruise. What we did and saw was fine. The cabin was on the big side. We had a deck. Seating was open in the dining room. Food was fine. Wine and beer was free with lunch and dinner and were fine. Lecturer Ted was knowledgeable and a good speaker. The other lecturer was neither. Excursions were all run by Havanatur, a Cuban company. Their buses were nice but guides were uneven. Some were very difficult to understand. Per our new itinerary sent 3 weeks before the trip we were to go to the Botanical Garden in Cienfuegos one day and take a bus tour to Trinidad the next. When we got on the boat we found you had to pick one or the other as the tours were on the same day. On any given day different tour buses stopped at different sites but we were never told ahead of time which bus was stopping where so there was no opportunity to chose a bus based on your personal preferences. We have friends that were considering this cruise so we paid special attention to handicap accessibility. The boat was reasonably handicap accessible although there was a railing on only one side of the hallways and the elevator did not go up to Level 6 where the outdoor happy hours were held. The tour buses had a high steep step to get onboard and 4-5 steep steps after that. Walking tours were often on uneven cobblestone streets or sidewalks that had inconsistent cutouts to accommodate walkers or wheel chairs. Many of the sites we visited had steep steps with no hand railings or steep thresholds to get into buildings. Cuba in general was not handicap accessible and many restaurants required navigation of stairs. This cruise had a luxury price but what they delivered was anything but. Still upset about the change in ports without notice or written explanation we emailed the president and vice president of American Cruise Lines (the parent company) when we got back from the trip. We asked for an explanation of why we weren't notified of changes in a timely fashion when we could still cancel and get a refund and we asked for a partial refund. We received no response. We then sent a letter to the same executives. The vp responded in the last week thanking us for writing and telling us that they would share our concerns with the Cuban government to make it a better experience. Again... no explanation for why they waited until 3 weeks before our cruise to tell us that none of their Cuban cruises had stopped in the 3 ports that were omitted. We ended up spending an incredible amount of time at sea. 49 hours getting from Ft. Lauderdale to Santiago de Cuba, 24 hours between Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos, 41 hours between Cienfuegos and Havana and 18 hours to get from Havana back to Ft. Lauderdale. Not what we paid for! We choose this cruise because it advertised 7 ports but did not find out until we boarded the ship that it had been reduced to 3. I don't care if it was because of problems with Cuba, we should have been notified and given the opportunity to cancel. At the very least we should have gotten a refund for the port fees that had been included in our cost. The stateroom was half the size of the picture on their website. We called Pearl Seas directly to verify the direction of the cruise in order to pick our stateroom and be able to see the shore line but when the cruise started it was going the opposite direction. The entertainers were mediocre at best and the furnishings were shabby. We had one server that was downright rude (Fred) and the food was adequate - nothing to rave about. But to be honest we had some wonderful servers who did a lovely job. One of the lounges on the ship was on the second deck, which had the WORST smell. Either they had a serious sewage problem or worse, a severe mold issue. Unbelievable. The one good thing was a lecturer that they had onboard - Ted Henken. Thanks to him we learned a lot about Cuba and saw more than expected with a greater appreciation. Would not recommend this company. They also travel to the Great Lakes and are a sister company to American Cruise Lines. Read Less

Like most of the other reviewers, we wanted to see Cuba before any major impact by USA tourists. Our tour had been canceled twice before we were able to make the trip. Prior to the cruise emails to Pearl Seas "oyster Society" for multi cruise passengers requesting updates on the status of the cruise were ignored. Phone calls to Pearl Seas were not productive and did not provide any information. The usual response was "we just don't know". Embarkation and disembarkation were quick, easy and pleasant. Cabins are large and comfortable. Dining was not up to the quality, variety, or freshness experienced on the Pearl Mist Great Lakes cruise. Entertainment and onboard lectures are marginal. The crew except for the Cruise Directors are fantastic. The Cruise Directors tend to be defensive, non communicative, and uncooperative. The ports and excursions did not match those advertised in the brochures. When the Cruise Directors were questioned about the changes their standard reply was "the Cuban Government is responsible" frequently with a smirk. In my opinion the Pearl Mist was not designed to be an open ocean vessel. Many of the passengers experienced motion sickness on the first full day and last day of cruising. The Captain, who is one of the finest small ship handlers I've sailed with decided to have the passengers bussed across the Island to Havana instead of exposing them to the rough transit around the north end. This was one of the most enjoyable shore excursions of the trip. My compliments to the Captain, ships senior officers and ships crew they do a fantastic job. The U.S. based shore personnel leave a lot to be desired. This was our third cruise on the Pearl Mist and will be the last unless Pearl Seas provides incentives to compensate for their poor past performance. Read Less

We chose this cruise, because like most Americans, we want to see Cuba before Americans ruin it. We also enjoy smaller ships & this ship promised to stop in many ports, originally about 7. We origingallly signed up for the first sailing in early 2016. We changed to the 3rd sailing because we were told that the port side would have the best views. That trip was cancelled several times and we finally sailed in Feb. 2017. The ship sailed around Cuba in the opposite direction, so we were on the wrong side. When we asked to change, we were told that one would have no view anyway. Not true. We lowered our expectations each time that we communicated with the cruise line. Our friends who were to originally sail with us cancelled after the 1st cancellation of the trip. We had been to Cuba on our own in Dec. 2016, so we knew what to expect in Cuba. The cruise trip was adequate and the general consensus seemed to be that it was drastically overpriced. This Cuban cruise served no Cuban coffee, provided no Cuban music, had only 1 night of local entertainment on board, other than that, no entertainment other than 2 men from Jacksonville who did the best they could. There was no fridge in the room, no hot tub, no gift shop, and no spa services. On several occasions we were required to carry our own luggage. The food quality was definitely not luxury. Although the alcoholic beverages are included in the price, the bar is not always open. If you care for a glass of wine upon returning to the ship, you are out of luck. (The luxury Chardonnay is Woodbridge.) During the days at sea, the movies to your room are pitiful and the 'educational' talks were amateurish. We were originally promiseed a dive and snorkel day, but it never got scheduled. The cruise line blames everything on the Cuban government. Cuba is difficult to navigate, I will admit. So, if the price for this cruise was more in line with the quality of the cruise, I think that people would be happier. I would like to suggest that people not be permitted to jog on the top deck while people on deck 5 are trying to sleep. I was appalled when we were directed to leave our performance at the Hotel National before they were finished. It was utterly rude and does nothing to enhance the view of American tourists. We will be going back to Cuba, but on our own and stay at Airbnb's, as we did before. I would recommend this cruise to people who don't care about the price and are not interested in trying to negotiate Cuba on their own. I feel that the cruise line did an excellent job in dealing with our adverse weather conditions. Read Less

We wanted to experience Cuba before it became "touristified." The Pearl Mist is a lovely ship, wonderful service, great staff, very good food. Highlights of the onshore time included the cultural center in Havana, the visit to El Cobre, and the botanical gardens of Cienfuegos. Also the time in Trinidad was enjoyable but we did not see two of the three attractions listed. But, the cruise was not as represented. We had less than half our time on shore. Most of our time was spent "cruising" or actually killing time between ports. We were supposed to have had personalized walking tours of 5 plazas in Havana. Apparently that meant we were to figure it out on our own as we did not have any walking tours. Most of our Havana time was spent in a bus going to and from Hemingway's home which was unremarkable and hardly representative of the Cuban culture. We did not tour the Cathedral de la Habana or the Revolution Museum as advertised. Of the 4 Cuban guides we had, two were very good, very knowledgeable, informative and eager to interact with the passengers. The other two had little to say and spent their time answering questions from the people in front but those in back could not hear or understand. Of the two lecturers, Dr. Richard was very good and had interesting presentations. Tom Miller "The Onboard Expert" is apparently a very knowledgeable person and "accomplished author," but as a speaker he is at best painful to endure. If you are looking for a pleasant time at sea with good food and service, you will enjoy this. If you are looking to experience a different culture, it is a disappointment. Read Less

Positives: The Pearl Mist is a wonderful ship - comfortable and clean. Ship's staff in dining room and elsewhere were professional and courteous. Meals were fabulous. Night-time entertainment was excellent for such a small ship. Negatives: The itinerary was completely different from what was advertised. Scheduled stops were arbitrarily changed to lesser known venues. Planning of stops was poor - passengers were basically left on their own to figure things out. No respect for many of the elderly people during shore visits. It was clear to the passengers that the ship's stabilizers were not functioning as they should - resulting in a change of course from Panama to Colombia, and a one day premature arrival in Cartagena. Worst aspect of the cruise: The Pearl Seas Cruises company representative (John) did a very poor job. He was aggressive and confrontational to several passengers, raised his voice when asked simple questions, and was intimidating to passengers who asked reasonable questions about the arbitrary itinerary changes. Conclusion: Pearl Seas Cruises totally misrepresented this cruise in their pre-cruise marketing. The itinerary we experienced was totally different from the itinerary that was advertised prior to the cruise. The Pearl Seas company representative was a disaster - dare I say incompetent. Based on this experience I absolutely cannot recommend the Pearl Seas Cruises trip from Costa Rica to Colombia via the Panama Canal. Very disappointing experience. Read Less

Pros;s - nice cabins, decent food, good dining service, ample snacks in lounge areas, free wifi. Con's - no TV as promised. However the real con was the amount we paid compared to what we received. Major issues with hotel reservations on the night prior to the cruise. People were bused between three different hotels and some did not get rooms until after midnight. We were on their last cruise from Costa Rica through the Panama Canal and ending in Columbia. The excursions in Costa Rica were not as promised. Many on those on this cruise selected this itinerary to see Manual Antonio National Park and Cobia Island. The National Park was closed the day we were in Quepos and they decided not to take us to Cobia Island as it would be be too crowded that day. Instead they sent us on a hike to an island on unsafe boats (no life preservers) without real guides. We had a near death experience with one of our tour participants and RSC did not have a cruise rep on this tour. Our tours in Panama and in Colombia were good. If you are considering the cruises to Cuba be sure that you read good reviews about the cruise, tours and etc before booking. PSC does not provide the cruise that they publicize on their brochures so buyers beware!!!! Read Less

The Pearl Mist is a beautiful ship and service staff wonderful. But... it has many rough spots to correct so before you book this expensive cruise look closely and so some research. In my opinion the information about the cruise line both online and in the brochures seem to be sadly lacking. For example, inquire about where the various ports are located; what the excursions are and the cost and what provisions are available for those who have physical problems on the excursions; how much you need to pay for Wi-fi; and what activities are available on the ship (one of the brochure says there is a spa-not so). We did not find out we had to pay for the excusionsuntil the first night on the cruise. And were taken aback when we found we had to embark and disembark from the ship in remote industrial areas; the one in Chicago was 45 minutes out of town and in a secure site where we could not leave the ship unless we were on curise business. The scenery was wonderful, the guests were delightful, the music entertainment was the same each night... the guest speaker was the highlight of the on board activities. Read Less

Overall, we do not feel that this was good experience. We have been on approximately 8 cruises and this was the worst. Following are comments which we feel support this conclusion. 1. The Welcome Aboard brochure stated that we should arrive at the ship between 11 am and 2 pm and the ship would leave around 3pm. In order for us to make this schedule, we booked a hotel room in Newark so we could catch an early flight to arrive in Toronto in this time frame. When we got on the ship we were then told that the ship would not leave until 9 pm that evening. No one ever told us of this change which could have been done simply thru a blanket email to all passengers as soon as this change was known. As a result we unnecessarily spent and extra $210 for a hotel room in Newark to catch an early flight. We could have driven straight from home to Newark later in the day and gotten a later flight had we known of the later departure of the ship. 2. This cruise was to be special as a celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary so we selected the largest stateroom on the ship. This whole thing cost us over $17,000 with this large stateroom. As it turned out, the stateroom was large in square footage but not in functionality. It was only large because of a narrow strip of useless space that had two chairs in it. Since it was on the 3rd deck, it didn’t even have a sliding glass door like the staterooms on the 4th and 5th floor. When signing up for this room, no one at Pearl Seas made any attempt to point any of this out to us or assist us in our stateroom selection. Upon our return home, we reviewed photos of previous staterooms on previous cruises and they were all much more elegant and inviting. Including our 3 cruises on American Cruise Lines. 3. We spent $17,000+ for this cruise (note the recurring theme here) and the “free wi-fi” is only one hour a day and you have to pay for any more. Cheezy. Even at that, our free hour in 24 hours had to occur 24 hours after the previous session had ended. Very difficult to manage. It would probably be simpler to just not have wi-fi and people would understand. 4. Couldn’t figure out what size the beds were. They looked like king size, but my feet stuck over the end no matter what I did. I am 6 ft tall. 5. We had a card on the desk in our stateroom stating that our cabin steward was “Dante”. In 10 days, we never figured out who Dante was. 6. Food. It had it’s ups and downs. All beef was cooked exactly as requested. Problem was that the quality of the beef was terrible. It was either tough or gristly or both. Whoever did the provisioning for the meat should be made to eat it. I had a crab cake that was the best I have ever eaten. Much of the fish had to be sent back because it was over cooked. This happened to many or our table mates too. 7. Ports. Holland Mich was a gravel yard. Beautiful. Holland is a nice town to visit, but not on Sunday like we did because almost nothing was open. Pretty boring as a result. But the crowning glory was Chicago: Everything up until we were captive on the ship told us we were docking at Navy Pier. Pretty sweet. Then, once meeting with the Onshore Activities Director we were told we would not dock at Navy Pier. The reason is laughable: “There was a fire on a Halloween barge at Navy Pier and it sunk to the bottom, therefore the Navy Pier docking was not possible because of debris on the harbor floor.” Hmmm. Let’s see, the last Halloween we had was last October, 10 months ago. And in all that time Pearl Sea Cruises was not aware of this calamity which could effect what they told their passengers? On top of that, I talked to several Chicagoans who had no idea what that was all about and there was no apparent salvaging going on to correct this situation. This sounds like one giant fairy tale to me. On top of that, we docked at this ridiculous steel yard which was 45 minutes from Chicago by coach and trolley. Each coach and trolley had to be escorted thru the yard by a guy in a pickup truck. Made us feel really special. Let’s see, Navy Pier in the heart of Chicago or a Steel Yard 45 minutes out of the city. For a $17,000+ cruise, what should I expect? All of the other ports were barely ok. In Sault St. Marie, we were told there would be no shuttle in to town but it was a half hour walk. We went as far as we could because I have a bone spur on my heel. Didn’t make it down town. After lunch we were told that miraculously there was now a shuttle to take us down town. By then, thanks, but no thanks. From the passengers we talked to that did make the walk, downtown was not worth walking to. Would we go on Pearl Seas again? Not in a million years. What a way to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary. Read Less

This ship and the cruise did not live up to our expectations for the money we spent. The itinerary was good and visited some nice towns. The room was ordinary and plain. There was a very small closet that did not have a door on it. There was no mini fridge. The balcony was a reasonable size, but there were not sliding doors to get to it (on our deck). The view out from our room was not good - my husband had to bend over to look out. The bathroom was OK with a shower and a sink. Service in the dining room and during cocktail hour was good. Other times, there were a lot of problems. Our paperwork indicated that we could start boarding at 10 AM, but when we showed up at 10:15 AM, there was no one there for almost another hour. We never met our room steward and they certainly never asked if we needed something. All the paperwork/announcements on the ship had conflicting information. We were never really sure what was happening and when. There was only one excursion per port and some of those did not seem good for some of the elderly passengers. There was no regular bar on the ship. The bar opened for cocktail hour and closed at 9 PM. Outside of this time, you are out of luck. The music stopped at 9:30 PM. The reception desk closed at 10 PM. There were warm soft drinks, warm juices, and snacks in the lounge, but no indication of where to get ice. Only one elevator and one main staircase cause a lot of delays at busy times. Last year, we went on a cruise of the same length and paid less (on a ship for about 400). On that cruise, we had a large room, walk in closet, fridge, balcony with sliding doors, a bathroom with a shower and tub and 2 sinks, a room steward that looked after us very well, and lots of excursion choices. We will not be doing a Pearl Seas Cruise again. Read Less

Definitely not a "luxury" cruise. Room 227 was extremely noisy and nothing was done to alleviate the problem. Food was average for a ruby Tuesday's type of chain restaurant. The BBQ oysters resembled hockey pucks, the oyster Rockefeller was present without "oyster". In general seafood was best eaten on shore not on board. Tours were poorly thought out and insufficient time was allocated for museum touring. On one tour the first bus left on time, the second 40 minutes late and the third 50 minutes late yet they all ended at the original stated end time. WX related issues were not compensated for. No adequate onboard activities were offered to compensate for the three missed ports of call. It's hard to play checkers when there's a board but no checkers, or cribbage when there's a board but no cards. Extending open bar hours or asking onboard veterans to sit around and tell "war stories" and drink beer is not an appropriate substitute for ports of call and tours. On a positive note, the Captain was one of the most skilled ship handlers I've ever had the pleasure to sail with. He minimized the weather related rough seas discomfort more than I imagined possible. Read Less

The Pearl Mist wasn't built for a smooth sailing with Hurricane Anna causing elimination of a couple of advertised stops along the St. Lawrence Bay. Then a Nor-easter made the Bay of Fundy crossing one we won't forget listening to the 15-20 foot waves crashing into the ship. The Captain and crew did the best they could navigating across St. Lawrence Bay but had no choice but to go directly across the Bay of Fundy. Would not recommend this cruise to passengers needing a lot of disability/handicapped assistance. If you go late in the season be sure to take a number of layers of clothing. And we would suggest you add up the time advertised to be on shore vs. the time on the ship. We felt it was an over priced cruise, regardless of the bad weather/seas we experienced on the cruise. It started in Chicago.  First I have to say what a beautiful area, and all the ports were wonderful.Everything from Holland, Mi to Mackinac Island and Niagara Falls were excellent. The ship ended up giving us all the excursions free because there were so many issues, I think they wanted to make it up to everyone. Staff was very nice and housekeeping and wait staff tried very had to please. Now the not so good! the ship seems to have some major issues that hopefully can be fixed in the future. They told us they were having some major issues with the hydrolics and the noise level in some of the rooms were unbearable and could not sleep. They ended up moving us to the room the entertainers had and they moved to ours. The rooms are large, but not all have full glass windows.Some only have a smaller window that has a door that goes out to a deck. Our second room had no deck at all. The room next to us also had the same problems, This was on deck 2, also the people on deck 5 said the noise from the smokestack was also very bad. they give out ear plugs. The food was the worst we have had in over 30 something cruises. They had a hard time getting the top deck clean and putting out the furniture for people to be able to use the decks. Trash cans not empty, ect. They do not have a regular bar on board that you can sit at. They just set up bottles and wine and beer at happy hour. At first that was they only time you could get a drink, but they did change that so that after dinner with the entertainment you could get a drink. Nobody had a safe in the room , which was promised and there are no doors on a very small closet with white plastic hangers. I really do not feel that this was a "luxury cruise" as advertised, not for this kind of money. I would not reccomend this ship at this time. Maybe after a few more trips.   Read Less
