Selected this cruise because I had done a river cruise. The price was right. The greeters at the airport were right there and saw to everyone's needs. When we arrived at embarkation, boarding the ship was a breeze. We found our cabin with no difficulty and the accommodations were excellent for two people. Our room steward, the restaurant staff, excursion desk were all outstanding. The enrichment lectures were informative and well presented and attended. It was enjoyable in the evening to have music in the public areas. We enjoyed the game tables - with no casino. That certainly was an added plus to this trip. We had wonderful shore excursions with local guides who went above and beyond other guides I've had when traveling others companies. There isn't a negative thing I could share about this cruise. I've told friends thinking of traveling to Cuba - "This is the one for you!" If you are thinking about a trip to Cuba, "This is the one for you, too." Read Less

I never saw the notice for the Meet and Mingle in the daily happenings in the ship's program although I did see the signs for the get together, but did not know when it was happening. Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba were most interesting and more vintage cars than I expected, The ship was perfect, as were the staff and food. Manfredi’s and The Chef's Table were such a treat, as were the many buffets. We met so many nice people on this cruise, everyone with such different backgrounds and perspectives. The onboard lectures were fantastic as were our guides on the excursions. The infinity pool was nice as was the regular pool, and the Aquivit Terrace was so nice and casual. I enjoyed being in my swim suit/robe and eating on the terrace. What a treat! Anastasia is a gifted piano player, and we enjoyed listening to her in the evenings. The launderette on our floor was nice to have. Read Less

Travelled in a group of 12 and we all were exceptionally pleased! Group included first time cruisers and seasoned cruisers. Exemplary food, service and off-shore tours! Staff is superb in their professionalism and service, always with a friendly smile! Staff Attention to detail is amazing! Staff can remember you name, cabin and details about your preferences. Off shore excursions are excellent. We did upgrade some of our tours and they were with the extra expense. The pre-destination informative sessions were very helpful before each port. We have been on many cruises and Viking’s food exceeded expectations. Wine parring was fabulous. If we ate off ship food schedule, sometimes it was difficult to find a food option when returning to the ship after a tour. Down side is the main entertainment. Same performers with different themes every nite led us to retire to our rooms too early. Ship was always very clean no matter what time of day and in all weather conditions. When crew had to scramble to change a port due to bad weather, the result was very organized and a positive experience. Already have another cruise scheduled! Read Less

I chose this cruise for the Cuba itinerary. I have taken over 100 cruises with all the premium and ultra-deluxe cruise lines and I have never encountered significant problems. First, I would like to address what I consider "significant problems" and then mention "irritations" for which I think there is room for improvement and additional training. Significant Problem> When I got to the cruise terminal I could not pass security because I was not on the manifest. A supervisor allowed me to go upstairs where there was a Viking check-in desk. They could not find my name. Ambra (I think that is her name) was called. I explained to her I had people waiting in a car outside in case I could not board and explained my BP was extremely high and I was ill. She told me to "wait right here" while she went back to the ship, After about ten minutes I was lightheaded and dizzy and asked if I could sit and have a drink of water. Any elderly (I am age 75) person, let alone ill, should be offered a seat. Finally, I was boarded. There is no dedicated guest services staff. One calls the Explorer Desk. Four times I was unable to get an answer. When I asked the guest services representative why the phone is not answered he stated they are busy with other customers. There is no recording to indicate that and no option for a callback. The table on patio very dirty with standing water. Housekeeping did come and clean it when I called. I could not connect to the internet. Went to guest services for the third time. They could not help. A third person came to my cabin(after two others tried and I waited in the cabin for two hours) who had IT expertise and fixed it. Guest services called me three times to have me bring my passport. I had to go to the desk and give my passport for the third time. No remote for the TV in the cabin. I called housekeeping and they brought one but could not get it to work.Another person came and explained the safety video had to run first before the TV would work. Surprised to find the main dining room is not open for lunch, I was tired of buffets and wanted to sit down and be served. There are no trays so each course had to be carried to the table with no one to help. My spouse uses a walker so if anyone is traveling with a disabled person the other person has to make multiple trips to the buffet to get food for two people. The buffet (World Cafe) is extremely busy since it is the only place to eat for lunch and the wait staff is unable to provide adequate service. The cruise was advertised as "airfare included." I live in the Ft. Lauderdale area so air was not necessary but no credit is given for local travelers. Other cruise lines I have sailed deduct $300 per person from the fare. Solo travelers seem to be overlooked. I was seated behind a pillar in the Chef's table specialty restaurant and forgotten. This was a wine pairing dinner. The waiter forgot the initial wine so later brought two glasses of different wines, Voice mail service was intermittent. I could not retrieve my messages for a whole day There was a lot of complaining about Viking on the ship. I addressed my concerns with the hotel manager but he stated he is not empowered to do anything about my concerns. He stated that all concerns must be forwarded to corporate. The ship is beautiful. The spa is spectacular and the food is on par with other premium cruise lines but service is inferior to most mainline cruise lines and grossly lacking compared to the other "ultra deluxe" cruise lines such as Seabourn, Crystal and Regent.. I do think there is much more training needed; particularly in guest services and the wait staff in serving solo passengers. My cabin attendant was excellent and housekeeping could not do enough to address my concerns. Thesupervisor of housekeeping came to my cabin several times to make sure everything was OK. And when I asked about some snacks for an "election night party" the offerings exceeded my expectations One final comment. The itinerary was for three days in Cienfuegos and three hours in Santiago. It should be reversed. Everything of interest can be seen in three hours in Cienfuegos but Santiago is a large citywith many more points of interest. I did not do the Havanna tour dueto the 31/2 hour bus ride and the fact that I can take a five daycruise which overnights in Havanna for about half the price of the tour by Viking. In summary, Viking Ocean has beautiful ships but I hope the level of onboard services will be significantly improved. There seems to inadequatestaff; particularly since there are no exclusively guest services representatives. I paid $1100 a day for my cruise but I have had far superior experiences for cruises less than half that amount. Furthermore, if you are a solo traveler, over 65 or have a disability this cruise is not for you. Viking Ocean Cruises marketing targets younger, able bodied affluent travelers who enjoy such things as the "snow room" on board. Read Less

Cuba with luxury was the style on this wonderful ship. The personal touches and finishes provide a visit to a challenged country in grand style. We enjoyed everything on this cruise; however, the highlight was Havana cruising down the streets in vintage auto. The history of the chalenges faced by this 3rd world country are daunting. Many guides were willing to share their life experiences with all as well as the triumphs they have enjoyed. The vision of this country with it's future will be something I will remember for. The cruise gave us the chance to see many years ahead and envision the opportunities that can be experienced by the beautiful country. Our ship was new and fresh, everyone was dedicated to providing us with a pleasant vacation. The ship design is almost flawless in enhancing our experience. I would recommend this ship, crew and vacation to all of my friends. Read Less

We chose it for Cuba and liked the overall itinerary. We were very pleased with Viking. The rooms were nice and all of staff were great. The food was very good. We liked the high end drinks you could get with the beverage package. We were pleasantly surprised as we'd never done a cruise that was not all-inclusive. The down side is there is no entertainment at night like other ships have, except for the small band. We did enjoy the one night on the pool deck when the band played. We met some great people. On our excursion to Havana, we loved our tour guide. What we didn't like what coming back in the dark on the road we were sharing with horse-drawn carts. That was not clear in information ahead of time or we probably wouldn't have gone. We did not take any other excursions and talking to other people, sounded like we made the right choice. Read Less

We are just off of the Viking Star...around the Caribbean Sea cruise. We left oct. 18 from Manhattan, NYC. It was a blustery warm day. This was our 1st ocean cruise after several river cruises (also w viking). It is a fabulous ship. Clean...very clean...with a tremendous staff. They always went above and beyond....from the housekeeping staff to waiters on up! We had done a guarantee cabin...which means we paid for the lowest class cabin in hopes of an upgrade...but..if an upgrade didn’t come..you got what you pay for. The main downer of this is that you don’t know your cabin assignment until days before the cruise. We were fortunate to get a category upgrade to a delux veranda...which was binoculars in room...a throw..and the fridge being restocked daily w soft drinks. The best part was that our room was mid deck midship. All rooms are balcony! Being home...one thing I miss is the heated bathroom floors!!! And the shower head. I also can’t say enough about the hot water in the shower. I love my hot showers...but they were really hot!! Love, love, love! The bed was comfy. We did have an issue with too soft of pillows...our room steward was gracious to find us a couple firmer ones by day 2! The food is unparalleled. We ate dinner in the restaurant most nights. Did Manfredi twice...to die for! And chefs table once (too gourmet for us). Breakfast in the dining room is wonderful! Always pleasant servers. Did I mention they have lamb chops on the breakfast menu? Yes..right next to the steak! Embarkation took us all of 10 minutes in Manhattan...organized and efficient staff made this an easy experience. Disembarkationin Miami at first seemed confusing...but it was the guests making the process chaotic. The staff had it down!! Once our color group was called...we were off the ship and onto waiting buses in 15 minutes. Luggage was wonderfully sorted for us. I can say how easy it all was. As stated in other reviews...the entertainment isn’t the best...but it WAS entertaining! We had a magician onboard for 2 nights and a female impressionist for 2...they were the highlights of entertainment. Our cruise director performed one evening..and there were 2 dance parties by the pool. Two movies were shown under the stars...documentaries....not a fan. This was 15 day cruise...so it is challenging at best to keep 900 passengers happy all the time. You could go to a vast number of lectures during the day. In each port there is an included tour. We participated in all of them...all showed an overview of each island. The free use of the spa was amazing. We loved the thermal pool. I have seen reviews where it is small..but at no time were there more than 4 in the thermal pool at once. My husband enjoyed the sauna, ice room and bucketOwater! Lol. The outdoor pools are nice...just deep. However there are bars to hold onto when in the pool. And plenty of room to sit around the edge of the main pool..in the water. Our weather was hot..so a refreshing dip was needed! We enjoyed the ocean cruise very much...but prefer a river cruise. Looking forward to another Viking adventure in our future. Read Less

Both embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. We were always treated with a welcoming attitude by the crew in all departments. Very professional but also very personable. Having been on Holland America and Oceania, which we also thoroughly enjoyed, Viking has made a lasting impression! Due to its smaller size and number of passengers as well as the comfortable open and inviting common areas and our relaxing cabin, we found this cruise met and exceeded our expectations! The cabins are spacious and have plenty of storage, especially in the washrooms. They were meticulously maintained and replenished daily. Restaurants and dining areas, of which there are several, provide various menus. The convenience of booking on the TV screen gives passengers the opportunity to book last minute and to check availability, which was the same procedure for booking tours. Great movie selection on the TV as well. Enjoyed all the entertainment we saw, very age appropriate. Also continuous throughout the day in different areas. We did take the included excursions which we enjoyed as well. We are looking to book future trips with Viking....but so far the ones we are interested in are booked through to 2020! I've heard wonderful things about Viking river cruises, and wanted to try the new ocean itinerary that didn't require overseas travel. Admittedly, the Caribbean is not my favorite destination in general, but it was a lot more accessible than any of the other itineraries. The most unpleasant part of the trip was the redeye flight on American. The lights from all of the video screens, constant service of drinks, and other activity made it impossible to sleep. (Of course, we all know how uncomfortable and crowded coach seats are!) Transportation was arranged by Viking. The flight arrived in Miami approximately 5:30am and we were not allowed to board until the afternoon. If we were to do another East Coast cruise, we would definitely elect to go a day or two early. Once we were on the ship, our moods immediately improved. We loved the cabin. The TV offered large selection of movies and very interesting documentaries. The entertainment was average for a relatively small vessel. The singers were great and the classical pianist was excellent. The other acts were adequate, but not memorable. The main theater was probably too small for the number of passengers on the ship. We had to get there 20-30min early in order to get a seat. There was generally only one performance at night. We ate in the buffet 90% of the time and enjoyed it completely. We tried the dining room on 3 occasions (1 each for breakfast, lunch and dinner), and decided not to go back because the service was so slow. One dinner alone took 2.5 hours. The fitness center was fabulous. We did not use the pools because they were too crowded. A free excursion was included at every port. We tried 3 of them and couldn't wait to get back to the ship. The busses were unsafe (in my opinion). For example, there were no seatbelts. On one bus seat backs wouldn't stay upright- they would fall backwards. One of our destinations was the site of a land bridge which had fallen into the ocean and was not there anymore. There were reportedly a couple of minor accidents on the excursions. My complaints regarding the excursions were certainly not the fault of Viking. The destinations were simply places that were not very interesting, and in some places unsafe. I would definitely return to Viking when they have West coast voyages. Read Less

We had room service and a scrumptious breakfast on the days we had an early tour and it was no extra cost. We enjoyed high tea only once we need to take a longer tour with a day st sea so we can enjoy all the benefits on the ship. We loved the Alaskan king crab legs and the specialty restaurants we loved the Nordic spa experience. They really thought of everything when they designed the ship there is plenty of storage to unpack everything and put everything away even your suitcases. I took my shower first and did my hair and makeup at the vanity allowing my husband to get in the bathroom quickly. The tours were great showing you all the highlights of each city. We spent a few days ahead of this cruise "doing" New York city -- seeing a couple of outstanding plays and touring the 9/11 Memorial. Ironically enough, that time became even more memorable and enjoyable in some ways than the cruise on Viking Star itself. Embarkation was a hassle only because the precise location of the ship was not made known to us, so our Uber driver had to drop us a quarter-of-a-mile away and we had to drag our luggage to the check-in location. I chose this cruise because it would take me back to where I grew up -- spending the first eighteen years of my life on the island of Aruba (part of the then Netherlands Antilles). I also wanted to share more with my wife what it was like to live on one of those islands in the southern Caribbean. As with every cruise that we've made with Viking (and this was our third -- the last through Europe and the Mediterranean on this same ship), our time aboard ship was enjoyable and the ship's staff were extraordinary in their service and care of us. One glaring exception, however, were the ways in which passengers, themselves, laid practically permanent claim to lounges around the pool area -- even when they were not there -- by leaving pieces of their clothing or miscellaneous properties on or around the lounges. They effectively made whole areas around the pool extensions of their staterooms which the rest of us, then, could not use. The food aboard was delicious and the serving impeccable. For those two reasons, alone, I'd sail with Viking again. I've rate our overall experience of this cruise as "Average," then solely because of the very poor port excursions that Viking chose for us. Except for our time on Aruba (where I rented a car and drove us around on our own because I grew up on that island), all of the other excursions/tours were of poor quality and largely a waste of time and money. For this reason alone, I doubt that I'll ever take a Viking Cruise to the Caribbean again. Read Less

We are a married couple (no kids) in our 40's who are early retirees and travel permanently. We added cruising as a mode of travel over the last couple of years and are no sailing around 100 days a year. Most of our cruises have been on the mid size ships of the major lines (Celebrity, HAL, NCL) with one cruise on Regent. We are in the midst of trying a variety of new lines. Overall we thought Viking was a beautiful ship with amazing food and service. The inclusives don't suit our style and the fellow passengers are more mature (no problem for us) and quite conservative, they felt similar to the crowds you encounter on HAL sailings. We embarked smoothly in New York, sailing down the Hudson being gorgeous. Restaurant was limited to the buffet which was a surprise, service at the outdoor tables is a problem and continued all cruise. Our cabin was available from 2pm which was good. The ship is lovely, clean Scandinavian design which makes for a comfortable atmosphere. The design leads to a feeling of space and we rarely encountered crowded spaces. The rear infinity pool is a highlight as is the atrium with its amazing screen. The double story explorers lounge is comfortable and one of the better crows nests we have experienced. Our cabin was a DV1 on the 8th floor (top floor) amongst the suites. As a DV it had a coffee machine which I loved. It was a good size with a light colour palette. The balcony had 2 chairs and a table but was only half covered on that level. Noise was rarely a problem. The smart TV was easy to use and had loads of movies and all the lectures available. The bathroom was a good size with heated floors. The bed was very comfortable. Our attendant was superb. The negatives are storage, it is really poor with so much under utilised space and a cupboard that is tight against the bed and difficult to access and led to us bumping into each other regularly. Our airconditioner was broken and we almost froze to death, after being repaired it was so noisy we had to have insulation installed to cover it. Dining - a real highlight. The restaurant did superb food, Manfredis the Italian was probably the best I have had at sea. The waiters were very good and the wine stewards were excellent. The buffet had very good quality (especially sushi and seafood at night) but the fact that you serve yourself is unhygienic and the lack of table service made it feel a little ordinary. The Chef Table was hit and miss, we thought the Asian menu was some of the worst Asian food we have eaten (we are Australian and travel to Asia frequently) the spice menu was superb. However this restaurant felt like a cafe at best and was clearly used as a training ground for staff with service patchy at best. The wine was never ready with the courses except for the cold sweet wines which were inexplicably poured half an hour early. Dress code is very relaxed and surprisingly there is no dress code on foot wear at all so it was strange seeing men wearing reef sandals and women in basic flip flops. Entertainment - average at best but to be fair we knew this beforehand. The Viking vocalists were underutilised. The guest entertainers were mixed, we loved the female vocalist but underwhelmed by the magician. The CD was an excellent performer as was the ACD. The classical trio, pianist and guitarist and Viking band were all excellent. I enjoyed the nightclub atmosphere which was quiet but fun. There were many lectures throughout the cruise on a variety of topics but with great weather throughout the cruise we missed many of them. There is a putting green and shuffleboard. Loads of board games. We loved walking the promenade or top deck for exercise. Viking includes access to the Spa which surprisingly we utilised frequently. The facilities were first class. The only problem is you have to share it with other guests the majority of which don't shower before using the facilities and even worse many leave the steam sweaty and enter straight into the spa pool (gross). Similarly at the outdoor pools we never saw one person shower before entering. Drinks - we bought the drinks package as included beverages was limited to beer and wine at meal times. We prefer more flexibility. We thought the package was good value but would rather not have to buy it and forgo wifi and shore excursions. One annoying aspect was the reluctance of the ship to provide San Pellegrino sparkling water despite having the package. It took 3 days of relentless pursuit to receive a bottle and then a complaint before it was provided without resistance. Small aspects like this hold Viking back from feeling truly luxurious. Wifi was poor, skype impossible, Facebook inaccessible. Basically limited to email and simple web pages. Not worth it as an "incusion". Service - very good overall. We had a poor experience early when a bartender yelled at my wife despite her not uttering one word, other guests left the bar in protest and several others along with 2 staff members checked to make sure we were ok. The first few days also saw us being ignored by staff to the preference of older passengers. Once we informed management these issues were corrected immediately and the rest of the cruise was generally perfect. We are fortunate to have visited many of the countries the crew are from and this led to many great conversations. I think the fact that tips are extra is cheap given how much Viking is charging. Shore excursions - as it was our first Viking we limited our excursions to the included ones. These were generally bus tours doing general overview tours. They were very average in quality (most regular passengers said they were much poorer than what is experienced in Europe). The weather was great and if we had our time again we would simply do our own thing and spend more time on the beautiful beaches. We met many great people but we also encountered many judgemental fellow passengers who seemed to be upset that "younger" passengers would be onboard. This was annoying and very strange as we are hardly teenagers. In summary, we loved the ship and service, the itinerary was fun and the weather was superb. We felt the price was high relative to their luxury competitors and the inclusions don't fit our cruising style (would prefer drinks and tips than poor wifi and excursions) however given Viking's success I think they are unlikely to change anything. Clearly more popular with the more mature crowd. Read Less

Soft drinks/juices, tea and coffee are available 24 hours a day and water is provided before leaving on excursions. There are no extra charges for any of the restaurants. An excursion is included in every port. We also enjoy the fact that there are 950 guests and no children. We attended a couple of the cultural talks and both speakers were entertaining and informative. The service is excellent in every area and the staff go above and beyond to please. The shore excursions are well organized. We have another Viking cruise booked for Alaska in July. At this point all six of our cruises have been with Viking and we have no plans to change that! This was our first ocean cruise, and we chose Viking because of the small ship, no photographers, no casino and no kids. We thought that we would be overwhelmed with people after our experience with the 100 passenger Viking river cruise ships. Not so, the ships facilities were such that we never felt any crowding in any location. We had upgraded to a penthouse veranda and the extra space was very much appreciated. The cabin was roomy with lots of storage and closet space. The bed was very comfortable and perfectly located for the large screen TV. The bathroom was luxurious, however the toilet was loud and intimidating when flushed. Lots of hot water and a wonderful shower and quality toiletries. The crew were exceptional. The cabin stewards introduced themselves on the first day and from then on addressed us by name anytime they saw us. The cabin was always kept in immaculate condition. Restaurant and bar service in all of the restaurants was personal and professional and the food and drink were of outstanding quality. We ate multiple times in both of the specialty restaurants and were not disappointed. We had no issues with reserving the restaurants throughout the trip. We woke up to room service most mornings and drank our coffee and ate a light breakfast on the veranda...Very nice way to start the day. Since this was a 14 day repositioning cruise we started in the cold of New York and had several sea days before we reached Bermuda. My only regret is that the stay was way too short. The at sea days were no problem since the ships many facilities allowed us to relax and enjoy the down time. In general, the shore excursions were good and we spent as much time swimming snorkeling and sailing on the uncrowded catamarans as possible. The rafting trip in Jamaica was very enjoyable. Although not advertised, be sure to sign up for the galley tour and the bridge tour which give you a behind the scenes look at the ships operation. On board, we took advantage of the well equipped gym, the main salt water pool and the infinity pool. Each pool had a hot tub and neither were ever overcrowded. Speaking of overcrowding...We often docked next to other huge cruise ships and the crowds, noise, photographers, screaming kids, made us very glad that we had gone with Viking. We are now planning our second ocean cruise with Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise just to relax after an illness and it fit the bill. The service staff were all very helpful and the World Cafe (buffet) was excellent, with very attentive staff and plenty to choose from. The quality of food here was superior to the main dining room as the service was very spotty, and the menus lacking in quality and choices. Manfredi's restaurant and service were top notch with a huge menu and all the dishes we had were excellent. The ship was full on the 14 day Caribbean cruise in October, and we found the activities lacking both during the day and in the evening. It was near impossible to get a table on the deck in the shade where you could have lunch and the classical guitarist by the pool at lunchtime was out of touch with a Caribbean cruise. I was hoping for a little upbeat music to accompany the scenery. For a "Luxury" category ship, there was no concierge. no port information given nor anyone to help with questions. No shopping or sightseeing hints. You were left to fend on your own. The staff sitting at desks ( no front desk here with purser etc) were very pleasant but could not answer any questions , they had to refer to someone else then get back to you. Overall the ship was very attractive. I thought the multi level atrium was a waste. There were 3 floors of nothing but tables and chairs. unattractive to look up at. Perhaps some of that space could have gone to another lounge or small showroom. Only one craft session for a 14 day cruise, and very limited speakers. Had I gone on this cruise to be entertained or join in some activities, I would have been very upset. I was not looking for that, but I talked to many guests who were very disappointed in the lack of activities. My first Viking Ocean Cruise, and I think my only one. Read Less

I would rate Viking excellent in all areas--crew, ship design/decor, cabin size/layout, etc. The food was wonderful, and there are several dining areas. We preferred the World Cafe, a buffet style restaurant for most of our meals. They have various food stations where you can custom order dishes. The wait staff were prompt, courteous, and very attentive. There is a yummy gelato station there and they make their own pizza in one area too. We ate in the other dining areas and they were fine, just not my favorites. We mostly did the free included tour in each port and most were very good. A lot depends on the tour guide and some are better than others. In NY City, we did the optional tour of the 9/11 Museum and it was excellent. Entertainment is good and attendance is high. The port talks and other talks were good too--many of these are available on your cabin TV. The cabin stewards are terrific---very friendly and willing to help in any way. They are very prompt in the daily cleaning of the rooms. We splurged a bit and moved up from the DV cabins to the PV2 for the extra space, and we were very happy with that decision. We have 2 more cruises booked and I can't even imagine cruising on any other line! Read Less

The cruise itself was ok. The ship is beautiful inside with tasteful decorating and furniture. The weather was beautiful considering all the hurricanes the previous weeks. The food in the general dining area, called the ‘world cafe’ was very good for breakfast ,lunch and dinner. There were two specialty restaurants: the chefs table and the Italian restaurant. The chefs table I thought was decent, but we heard lots of comments on both sides of the table. We had two nights booked for the chefs table, but chose to eat there only one time. The Italian restaurant was definitely lacking. I received a nine oz. steak that was basically marbled fat. When they asked me why I didn’t eat the steak I showed them how it was marbled with fat. We ended up that night again at the world cafe. The entertainers were very good, but entertainment overall was lacking. This was a circle the Caribbean cruise with short tours included. Most of the tours were just not very good. On one tour the bus driver backed into the bus behind us causing all passengers to be moved to other busses. The worst decision we made, only day two on the ship, was to pre-book for a future cruise from Bergen to Stockholm. The pre-booking employee was very nice, but mislead us regarding the cancellation policy. She assured my wife and I that the deposit was fully refundable up to 120 days prior to the cruise, including insurance. She said this at least three times. We thought this was the same as Princess which we’ve sailed with many times. Never a problem. A week after we got home we decided to cancel as it conflicted with other family plans. We then found out that they would not refund the insurance. We were shocked that we had been lied to. A supervisor referred us to page 2 where the small print cancellation policy is. Keep in mind you never get this from the pre-cruise employee until they charge your card and then generate the paperwork. We were told there is no path to resolution. It’s their policy. They keep our $1400 and basically told us too bad. As a warning to all reading our story be very careful when booking with this company and don’t believe everything they say. Unfortunately, we were too trusting. Read Less

This cruise was a celebration of successful medical treatments. We wanted to get away and be together after a great deal of anxiety. Also, we wanted to be close to the USA. The timing, location and length of this cruise satisfied our needs. Our experience exceeded our expectations that were high because of Viking's excellent reputation. From the moment of our Viking greeting after arrival at the airport in Montreal until our departure we felt comfortable with the happy, friendly and professional crew. Our cabin was roomy, comfortable and well appointed. Meals were excellent and service was superior. The dining services team were attentive, caring and empowered. The no charge for beverages was a plus even though our personal limits are one-two. Tours were well organized and added value to our experience. Lectures were excellent and presented by exceptionally well qualified professionals in their field. We were drawn to the lectures on Art, presented by a PHD from the Edinburgh, Scotland Art Institute. Read Less

Past good experiences and the newness of the ship contributed to our choice. The service is not 6 star and the food is not outstanding. Afternoon tea is well done. The excursions were adequate. The on board lectures were well presented and informative. Our cabin this time was the lowest category. On our first ocean cruise with Viking we had a penthouse category. The service was just average. The value is about average. The Viking cruise experience is in the middle between Holland America and Crystal. The Cunard experience has fallen recently even below Holland America. Viking Ocean cruises offer a carefully curated itinerary, but the excursions are often farmed out to the local guides and coaches; thus, the quality is uncertain. The staff appeared overworked at times. The public rooms and the overall design of the ship are very attractive. The entertainment is average. On the whole, I recommend suite cabins on Holland America, which offer service above and beyond Viking, for about the same cost. Read Less

My husband & I sailed with Viking only once before, the year prior. The ship is beautiful, clean, comfortable, & the service is wonderful. The staff on both cruises were professional & so friendly. We chose this cruise because of the destinations. Instead of common places that most cruises visit, the chance to see the Shetlands, Iceland & Greenland was something we wanted to do. All went smoothly from check-in to disembarkation. The food is delicious with a great variety of offerings. It is a definite plus that wine is offered with both lunch & dinner. There is a wide range of choices for shore excursions that we have found are done by very knowledgeable local guides. Our only negative was out of the control of Viking because it was the weather & falls under Mother Nature. There were storms in the area which did not allow for us to make 4 ports. Although we were very disappointed, it was a wise decision on the part of the captain, as none of us wanted to experience 40 ft. seas. We are pleased that Viking lived up to its reputation & immediately offered credit for the missed ports for a future cruise The sales of 2 for 1 have made it possible for us to experience these cruises. Without, we would never be able to afford. We have taken advantage of another sale in combination with the credit we received & have booked another cruise, this time for a river cruise. We are truly looking forward to. Read Less

We choose this Viking Cruise (not river cruise) to see how Viking does compared to other cruise lines (particularly Regent, Oceania, Celebrity). Viking is getting (three years in a row) some very high marks in the "Cruising" industry. We thoroughly enjoyed our Viking experience but not necessariy "The Best"......... We loved not seeing the photography, casino, the art autions and liked the "included" shore excursions. We did book a couple of non "included" shore excursions because of personal preferences. The entertainment was good and the Cruise Director, Heather, was the best; such a great person, entertainer/opera singer, and all around "director" as they should be. We are not exaggerating, she was the best we've seen and we've done many cruises. Our cabin was great, mid ship near an elevator and the size of the cabin was wonderful...with a lot of drawers........even in the bath room; shower was large and balcony was good. Another attribute was the Pool Grill; besides the normal burgers and hot dogs they had excellent lamb chops and steak (as a sandwich or not) with mushrooms or cheeze; a great place for lunch and even dinner--they had a seafood night, steak night, mexican night (yes, at the Pool Grill, at night) Disembarkation was smooth and of course Service was excellent; probably the best just behind Regent What we were disappointed with was: * The speciality restaruant "The Chef Table"........not enough variety [yes the menu changed every two days] but with no choices for the particular evening was "limiting" * The lack of afternoon activities such as Trivia or some other "games" [not bingo] that would cause interaction with fellow passangers * The lack of optional tours during the Copenhagen "post-cruise" extension; Viking dropped the ball in this category; the local Viking representatives were told to tell the passengers to check with the local "information" office downtown for optional tours; this was not conveyed to us in our pre-cruise documents and wasn't a good mark for Viking; my wife and I were resourceful and did the Hop On Hop Off bus and canal boat cruise as well as a "around Copenhagan" 8 hour day tour to some castles and cathedral and Viking museum with an excellent, small tour company, Hamlet Tours, in Copenhagen [highly recommend these folks]. Would we do it again; probably, but only if the itinerary was appealing; would we "stick" with Viking exclusively, probaby not; we like the Regent and Oceania lines and their Speciality restaruants are some of the best. But we would recommend Viking to everyone; check it out but don't get all caught up with "they really take care of you" as the other cruise lines I mention do too. and of course everyone sees Viking's great commericals on PBS TV........what's not to like about those? Oh I almost forgot.......the "Enrichment Lectures"..........they were wonderful; we didn't miss a one and after each lecturer (there were three did their first lecture, the audiance became larger and larger as work got out what an excellent job they did Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise. We cruise about 5-6 weeks a year and usually cruise Celebrity but have also enjoyed Royal Caribbean. For a change of pace and because the reviews were good, we decided to give Viking Ocean a try. We booked the 14 night "In the Wake of Vikings" cruise from Bergen to Montreal. Well, let's just say we're not drinking the Viking Ocean Kool-Aid. We do not see the value in Viking compared to the price. The reason for my low rating is based on many things. First, (but not the primary reason) we missed 4 out of 8 ports! And the ONLY reason we chose this cruise is because we had not been to 6 of the 8 ports. We missed 4 of the 6. The first missed port was understandable due to (somewhat) rough seas. But the following day the Captain announced that he was cancelling 3 ports towards the end of the cruise because there was a forecast of bad weather later on. Well, as it turns out, there was no bad weather later on. In fact, we had surprisingly calm weather for that sea. I just think that decision was made way too hasty. Note: Viking did offer a partial credit voucher to be used on a future cruise. So, guess what happens when you cancel 4 ports?? You end up with 4 EXTRA sea days! WHICH, on any other cruise line wouldn't be so bad. We actually love sea days on Celebrity, Royal Caribbean and even Princess. But on Viking, there is NOTHING to do! There's virtually no evening entertainment (and no I don't count the "classical trio" as entertainment night after night). There's no casino, no shows, and much less space to hang out in. What they do have, is lectures. Lots and lots of lectures. And I know a lot of people love educational lectures and in fact I would still recommend Viking if that's what you're into, but there has to be more than that imo. Another reason we didn't like Viking, and I know this only applies to a small minority of cruisers, is the suite. We paid more for our Explorer Suite (ES1) on Viking that we paid for ANY of our Penthouse Suites on Celebrity or Royal Suites on RCL. It was a joke. We were at the very front of the ship, and although there was a balcony out there, we weren't allowed to use most it. We only had use of the side balcony and none of the front. So much for the great views. The size of the Viking Explorer suite was half the size of the Celebrity Penthouse suite but the worse part was that there are no valuable perks for the upper suites. No drink package, no concierge, no butler, no prepaid gratuities. As far as dining, on a smaller ship, well, there are smaller choices. Not near as much variety. The quality was on par with Princess but not with Celebrity. The "included" excursions were all either walking tours or bus tours which are only fine if there's not much to see in the port. We took a few but in most ports we had to pay for optional tours to really explore a port. So basically, if we had purchased a smaller cabin I don't think we would have been as disappointed. But don't waste your money (6 times as much) on an Explorer Suite. Read Less

We did the Vikings Homelands cruise on the Viking Star. We were impressed with the excellent food options, the onboard entertainment, and the choices of sidetrips. For us, seeing Swan Lake performed in St Petersburg was the highlight, although just touring The Winter Palace was a close second. There were three dinner restaurants, and the Italian option was our favorite. We consistently found there were numerous excellent choices, and the service was always friendly and efficient. The complimentary wine choices were quite good. The price fixe restaurant offered excellent courses, but we preferred having more choices. There were also another formal restaurant and the possibility of eating at a fourth choice offering a buffet. I would strongly recommend making dinner reservations at the two restaurants requiring them early in the cruise. The rooms were clean and very comfortable, and the cleaning crew did an excellent job. I highly recommend this cruise. Read Less

I had heard and read great reviews for Viking. I was interested in the Viking Homelands cruise and I was not disappointed. It was more than I realized. From the time Viking personnel met us at the airport and guided us through the port and then onto the ship, everything went smoothly. The food was great with good variety of menu and venue. The cabin was comfortable for the two of us. All the ports were interesting with great guides. I would have liked to be able to exchange a tour without getting charged extra because it was not the included tour for the day. I was so impressed that three days into the tour, I signed up for the Mediterranean cruise for 2019. I especially enjoyed the review of the next days tours and what was important to know before we were going to leave the ship. There was order in the groups leaving and where we were suppose to meet. I am looking forward to the next cruise in October. Read Less
