We wanted a long cruise where we could truly relax. The 15 day cruise was really great. We celebrated our 40th anniversary on board. We had beautiful weather and the shore excursions were very enjoyable. Our dining experience was very nice. We were well taken care of. The stop in Nuremberg was very moving. The guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating. Our director Marie was lots of fun. She kept us all entertained. The onboard staff operated like a well tuned clock. They anticipated our every need. The front desk helped us arrange a nice bike ride along the river that was very enjoyable. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting a relaxed cruise along 3 different rivers. The only thing I would recommend would be the serving of local wines. While we like Argentine Malbec at home in the USA and while traveling in Argentina, we did expect European wines would be served to us at dinner. Read Less

This was our first time cruising with Viking. It exceeded all expectations. The crew was phenomenal attention to detail is amazing we couldn’t of picked a better vacation. Two months after this cruise we booked another Viking cruise. The excursions offered are widely diverse. They give details of what will be done whether easy moderate or extreme hiking based on your day and how you feel it made it a pleasure to know what was in store for you. We found all of the crude to be extremely personable. And we loved the casual attire throughout the whole cruise very relaxing . Meal choices are are so numerous every pallet will be pleased specially liked the food choices within region . I’ve traveled all over Europe and I found this to be the most relaxing vacation I’ve taken . I highly recommend Viking! We are now spoiled and only see Viking in our future. Read Less

We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary with the Grand European tour. This is 15 nights. We went from Amsterdam to Budapest, but you can also book going the other direction. The Magni and it’s staff managed to be efficient and friendly while being both elegant and relaxed. The longships are well designed and comfortable. We were concerned that it would be difficult to make friends, however, the majority of people were open and friendly middle aged or better couples. There were a couple of honeymooners and multi-generational families with older teens, but everyone was mixing by the second week. We got to know lovely people from Australia, England, and parts of the U.S that we have not visited. The tables in the dining room are for 6, and the lounge areas are also, so it was not difficult to mix naturally. We also got to know people in our excursion group pretty well. We booked the air and a pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam, along with an optional tour. So glad we did! Viking staff took good care of us from the moment we arrived to claim our luggage at the Amsterdam airport. Our airline had lost my bag, and the Viking guide helped me talk with the mostly Dutch-speaking airline employee. It was delivered to our hotel that afternoon. When it was time to go home, an airline strike affected our plans, but the desk staff handled it for us, so we could enjoy our last day without worry. This was a wonderful, stress-free way to see many places and get a taste of the culture on a first-class floating hotel. Highly recommend. My only wish would be more outside dining space. The ports of call and included excursions ranged from enjoyable to amazing. Not all will suit everyone’s fancy, but we learned many new things each place we went. Lots of freedom to explore on your own as well. Read Less

Quick service to the dock using purchased Viking transfers. The room was very nice with every amenity needed and the crew I can’t say enough about. All excursions choice we’re excellent Allowing for all degrees of walking abilities from strenuous too easy I highly recommend a Viking cruise experience… But be warned you will be spoiled treated like a king or queen and not want any other vacation cruise line. It has been three months since our return and we have chosen to book the Viking ocean cruise beginning in Spain during the Mediterranean. We had been thinking about a river cruise for some time. We travel a good deal but have been tiring of the pack/unpack routine between destinations and were looking for a trip where we could relax and let others make the plans. We could not have been more pleased! From the beginning of the trip until the end we felt pampered. Our flight over to Amsterdam was uneventful and had no trouble meeting our Viking representatives at the airport. With just the two of us, we were a little apprehensive about making friends but that immediately disappeared as we gathered as a group to head to the ship. By the end of our cruise I don't believe that there was anyone on board (staff included) that we had not met. And now, we have a new group of lifelong friends. Our cabin was ready when we arrived so we immediately settled in. Our expectations for the ship, cabin and community spaces were already set high but, upon arrival, they exceeded our expectations. The food quality, quantity and presentations were over the top. Unfortunately so much so that we both gained weight! One of the things we enjoy is interacting with the staff and we learned so much about their different cultures which added to our overall experience. We were always greeted with a smile...not to mention our Cruise Director who was exceptionally prepared, always seemed to be in form from the time we awoke until retiring, and made every effort to insure a grand experience. Being two of the younger guests we were a little apprehensive about the excursions and activities. Once again we were pleasantly surprised to find that there were a variety of tours and activities geared to different fitness levels, so we selected activities that met our own. Each port was well selected with plenty to see, and our tour guides helped to fill in the blanks. We hope that this is the first of many future Viking river cruises! Read Less

Vacationing on a river cruise is somewhat like an ocean cruise, but in some ways very different. Viking cruise is top notch. Very refined, luxurious experience. The Danube has so much history and activities to offer! Extra stay in Budapest was amazing - the prettiest city I’ve seen at night (and that includes NYC, LA, DC, Chicago, Seattle, among others)The included excursions were great, and the extra excursions available were very well done also. Our cruise director (Wes) was fantastic and did a great job of advising us on things to do. He wasn’t afraid to tell us the excursions or things to do that he didn’t like as much, and made the entire experience so much fun. Food was incredible, with a wide selection of American and local foods. Staff onboard was exceptional. Awesome people we met on the cruise, and since there were less than 200 passengers, we got to know them better - and still in touch with several of them! It is a bit pricey, but well worth the investment for a vacation. Read Less

Every tour guide was exceptional! They were knowledgeable, funny, as well as courteous and considerate. And the staff on the ship - well I really can't say enough about how wonderful they were! The meals were so delicious and I really appreciated the self-serve coffee/tea/water station with snacks. Loved that we could choose between fresh fruit or homemade cookies! I also appreciated that the food changed and offered regional selections as we traveled across countries. Viking thought of everything and I felt so cared for! We had heard nothing but positive reports from friends who have traveled with Viking and since it was my husbands first cruise ever, thought what Viking offered would be an ideal starter for him. It more than met our expectations from the moment we entered the ship. The attention to details from taking our luggage to our cabin, the dinning experience even offer us a lunch since we embarked a bit earlier than 3 p.m. Never felt "rushed" and yet everything was very prompt. The entire crew, was respectful, helpful, conversational but not intrusive. We enjoyed every shore excursion and those too were well planned with excellent guides. One could fill up their day as much as desired or utilize the included excursions and then have time to explore on ones own or just enjoy some relaxing time on deck. Even when we were cruising down the river during daylight hours, the Cruise Director provided information about what we were seeing and the history involved. The whole trip was very educational and for two history lovers we, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. As a matter of fact, enjoyed it so much we've booked another cruise for this Fall. Read Less

I have some health issues and did not feel like going to dinner a couple of times. When our waiter found out he insisted on bringing me a tray so I would not go hungry. The excursions are always top notch but sometimes a bit much for someone with disabilities. The entertainment was especially nice on this cruise, a duo that was very talented. If you have never cruised with Viking this is a trip you should take. It is not for children or people that need casinos, bright lights and lots of shipboard activity. Before I go any further, you must keep in mind that I am a smalltown senior citizen from New York state in the USA. This old gal had never been on a weeklong trip that required a passport. However, the beauty of my local surroundings and the Fingerlakes region of New York state places the bar pretty high. That being said and all things considered, this boat cruise vacation was a WOW. Embark in Budapest, Hungary; What a way to start my vacation. Immaculate accomodations, cozy cabin, and gracious crew members to make all guests welcome. We started right off with a delicious dinner shared with other vacationers. Everyone was friendly and seemed quite happy. Our first night cruise was spectacular. Everyone went to the upper deck to take photos of the magnificently lit historic buildings, bridges, and statues. The daily (optional) tours kept us as busy as we wanted. We skipped one tour because relaxing on board sounded good. Recharged by afternoon, we decided to tour the locale by bus and on foot. You guessed it, more photos. One of the extra tours we chose was a special Mozart Concert in Vienna. Thank you Viking Cruises for this special event. Another item I must share is regarding the Viking Magni staff. Everyone, and I mean every one of the staff members who we had occasion to meet was kind, good humored, respectful, and helpful in every way. I was delighted with the beautifully appointed restaurant and dining rooms. Nicely set table service, well groomed wait staff wearing perfect uniforms, with personalities and social skills that brought a smile to my face every day. Oh, let us not forget the Chefs. There was a bountiful supply of great food prepared just the way you want it (cooked and served with a smile). We loved the on shore excursions/tours. Words really cannot do them justice. The churches were breathtaking, the shops were quaint and very appealing, the countryside vast and beautiful. All were a must see. I really want to do it again (and again). Read Less

This is absolutely the way to go to relax, enjoy new countries, experience new countries and cultures, enjoy excellent food and service while cruising down the historic Danube. Nothing gets better than a Viking River Cruise! If you have never taken a cruise, this is the one you should take. The big ships are really nice, but the service, personal attention, guest relations and overall atmosphere of the River Cruise is terrific. We have already scheduled our next cruise for next year on the Viking Sigrum. The cost of this cruise is very reasonable and the air fare from Texas was ok. He mingled with every passenger and kept us laughing and smiling. What a gem! He was so well versed on all the cities and their surroundings and could even give us pointers on where to eat and shop. The food was amazing and well varied. There were many "local" selections as well as the standard options such as chicken and steak. The wait staff was willing to bring you almost anything you wanted, even if it wasn't on the menu! We wanted to experience the best in cruising which is why we chose Viking River Cruises. Our friends had recommended to us that cruising on a longboat was an unforgettable experience. Therefore, we selected the Danube River Cruise which was our first experience with Viking. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our cruise on the Viking Longboat MAGNI and would highly recommend Viking. The service provided was truly exceptional which began with the airport transfer to the hotel, the transfer to our longboat, and the transfer back to the airport. Once we boarded the boat, we were all were treated as if we were royalty. The food on the cruise was truly exceptional with a variety of selections offered. I especially enjoyed tasting the local flavors as we docked in various ports throughout Europe. The wine was complimentary with each meal and the deserts were wonderful. We found all the food service personnel from the waitresses, waiters, cooks, and food director truly exceptional providing exceptional customer service. Everyone wanted to make sure your dining experience was memorable. The Concierge, Program Director, Tour Director, and the Ship's Captain were also very cordial and customer service focused. My wife and I were prejudice; however, we felt our Program Tour Director was the best in the Viking fleet. He provided tons of information and historical references on our cruise as well as providing recommendations of places we should visit at each of our stops. During our stops we took advantage of the optional tour excursions. The local tour guides were exceptionally versed on their local history which increased the educational significance of the trip. For the Danube River Cruise, I would recommend travelers to begin in Passau Germany and end their cruise in Budapest Hungry as the night lights cruising into Budapest were unbelievable as we experienced on the sun deck. What a photographic opportunity. We made so many friends on our cruise which made it that much more enjoyable. We stay in contact with several families and are looking forward with traveling with them in the future with Viking. We were so impressed with the Danube Viking Cruise that we booked two more cruises with Viking: Paris and the Heart of Normandy Cruise in April 2019 and Majestic Fjords and Vibrant Cities in April 2020. The trip passes from Western Europe with its familiar culture, castles and vineyards on the Rhine, across the continental divide via a canal first envisioned by Charlemagne, then down the Danube through Central and Eastern Europe to the beginnings of Asia at Budapest. As an historic adventure I can think of nothing that surpasses it. The ship and its amenities are excellent. The included excursions are well managed and the guides are knowledgeable. They provide a view into each changing venue of the European mosaic as the ship passes from West to East. There is a small library aboard that provides information on the history and art and culture of each area as you proceed. The food is excellent and the wines are as well. They change with the regions so one can experience both the dishes and wines of each place. The crew is pleasant and helpful; the relatively small number of guests turns the trip into something like a family excursion. I recommend this trip without reservation. Interesting, but would have been better if at least one horse had been shown. We also would not recommend to new wine dinner. The food was ok, but the wine was not good. We chose this cruise quite by accident because some friends were already booked and we decided to tag along. We could not have been luckier. The crew was young and friendly and from a variety of countries through Europe and abroad. We loved the diversity. With the suite you also get free laundry service - which sounds silly - but it was the icing on the cake for me! The space in our room and the additional light was wonderful. I never felt closed in. Our cruise director was Gary and he was incredibly organized, everything went off without a hitch. He made it very clear that the excursions leave on time and don't be late. I appreciated that. Each excursion was wonderful. The daily talks from Gary on what to expect the next day were very helpful. The food was pretty good. Loved breakfast - lunch was only so/so and dinner was sometimes fantastic and sometimes missed the mark. But we weren't there for the food, we were there for the itinerary - which did not disappoint. We did "The Grand European" tour, 14 days on the ship followed by 2 days in Amsterdam. We actually were on 2 different ships because due to low water level on the Danube, we had to change ships. - We started on Magni and transferred to Baldur. In Passau, Germany, we packed up and got off and took a bus around the low water level while the guests on Baldur did the same and we traded ships. The crew stayed with each ship except for the program director. She came with us. Which was great. We had Tessa and she was fantastic! Viking made this transition as smooth as possible. We signed up for many excursions online beforehand and one thing I would have found helpful would have been for the website to talk about travel time for these excursions. For instance, some of them you are on a bus for an hour or longer to get to the excursion. That said, we still enjoyed them and had a great time. At each excursion you have a different tour guide and I was surprised by the wide variety of experience of these tour guides. Some were very good, others were difficult to understand or had unpleasant attitudes. The food was a challenge for us, but may be not for most people. We prefer to eat light and healthy and found that, that was difficult. The Aquavit Terrace is a very pleasant place to eat and breakfast is great there, lunch was o.k., but dinner only had a few selections. We aren't drinkers and found that there was a lot of focus on wine and drinking. - We expected that, but still didn't like it. The staff on both ships was excellent and attentive. We choose this 14-day cruise because it touched on all the highlights we wanted to see on our first trip through Europe. Additionally, we did a pre and post cruise extended stay. The pre-cruise stay was in Prague. The post-cruise stay was in Amsterdam. Both are beautiful cities and the hotels that Viking put us in were first class. I get seasick on the ocean, but not rivers or lakes. Thus, a river cruise was a great option. We took advantage of most of the optional excursions and can't really choose a favorite. They were all fantastic in their own ways. Food aboard the ship was both excellent and plentiful. We also had a few meals in various cities both as optional excursions and on our own. This gave us the opportunity to taste the local cuisine. Perhaps the most important thing about any hotel stay (make no mistake, a Viking ship is a floating hotel) is the attentiveness of the staff. Viking's staff and crew are par excellence! As an example, we had to change ships because the river was too low at one point making passage under bridges in that area impossible. So, we disembarked our original ship, took a bus ride to another ship, then boarded it all within a couple hours. The passengers of the other ship did the same; in essence, we traded ships. What really stands out is how smoothly this transition went and the warm welcome we received at our new ship by the new crew/staff. For continuity, our Cruise Director, Gary, stayed with us and continued to ensure we all had a top-notch cruise. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we're planning to take a Viking river cruise in China in two years. I highly recommend Viking! Read Less
