Service on Magni was very good. Had to switch ships halfway due to water levvels. Staff not nearly as attentive or nice. Third day they were still asking us what our cabin number was when we ordered a drink. On Magni, they knew day one. Food was ok, not a big selection.Got very tired of busing everywhere, especially last day. Spent 8 hours on a bus. I paid for a river cruise! Saw some beautiful places. No place to workout, half the time, the walking deck was closed. Minimal entertainment. Not much to do on board.Some of the optional excursions were good. Loved the 3 day pre cruise in Prague. Worth the upgrade to be right in town. Gift shop is a joke unless you want to buy overpriced Viking items. While they gave us a 25% credit towards a future cruise, unfortunately that will probably go to waste as to why would I subject myself to that experience again? Read Less

We are only 5 days into our cruise Let the following events determine if Viking is your cruise line Day 1 Arrive at designated embarkation point to discover no ship no crew and no advice where the ship is to be found. Eventually discover ship is 4 miles (10 km) away in an obscure industrial berth. Spend Euro 20 on taxi. On arrival no apology and no reimbursement. Day 3 Bathroom Shower drain stinks like open sewer Day 4 Still a drain problem Day 5 Temperature hits 97 degrees Passengers get 45 min ride in buses with no aircon Day 6 Temperature still in high 90ies. Ship fails to reach designated berth. Another 20 min bus ride. Now no aircon throughout the ship. No explanation. No apology. What next? Staff are great Management stink No more Viking for us mol If this is what you want and expect go Viking Read Less

Like most of the passengers on this river cruise, I fell for Viking's relentless promotions and advertising. In particular, visiting the Christmas markets sounded like fun. So, off my husband and I went. Embarkation went smoothly. Lunch was waiting when we arrived, and when our cabin was ready we were escorted there. The cabins on this new ship are quite nice. Smallish compared to today's ocean vessels, but with at most 100 cabins on a small ship one expects the cabins to be small. We managed and did not have complaints about space, the bathroom, etc. They only put duvets/comforters on the beds, European style, so one had to adjust the temperature in the room for that. In general the public areas were nicely done. The ship itself was fine. However, a Viking river cruise is very different from an ocean cruise in many ways. Even adjusting one's expectations accordingly, it may not be one's cup of tea. Dining: there are no tables for 2 or, from what I saw on our ship, for 4. That means there WILL be new friends made whether you seek that or not. The food is okay. Not great. At times not even average. The small portions did not bother us, but the lackluster quality of much of it did. The free wine was below par---I could tell and I am not a wine nut. My husband is and he found the red so lacking in any depth he would not drink it. The white was slightly better. It is excusable for Viking to serve such bad wine on a cruise of the Rhine through wine country. They have a drink package you can buy to upgrade---one way they are copying the big cruise lines. At times there was just oddness to the food. At one lunch we ordered beef off the menu, only to receive gravy with---I am not making this up---some mushroom bits and about 1/2 oz of beef shreds floating in it. Why let that out of the kitchen? Just say you are out of beef! Service: This was a mixed bag. In the dining room we finally found the best waiter---the only one who came close to providing the service we expect on a cruise. Before him we had a pair that spent more time joking with passengers than serving, and another who could not remember anything. At breakfast one day I waited for 15 minutes before a waiter approached me, and the room was not even half filled. At eveery single dinner I had to ask for sugar with my coffee, and for refills. Our cabin steward, a young woman, never came to introduce herself so I could not request the extra towels I needed. After I brought my little list to reception, she showed up exuding attitude that I had done that. It was the last we saw her. Some days her making up the cabin was perfunctory. There were stewards who finished in less than two hours, like ours, and others who were working all day scrubbing down their cabins. Try to get one of the latter. The reception staff on the whole was good, although one man barely controlled his impatience. There is no digital/computerized system for checking that passengers have left, so you have to hand in a little card when you return so they can count noses. The excursions were a mixed bag. We had two good guides out of the week, a few okay ones, and two horrible ones. Some do not know how to lead a group of 25 through a city. It is necessary to periodically stop so the group can stick together and you don't lose the ones at the end as the group strings out along city sidewalks. Too often that is what happened, with passengers getting annoyed. This told me that these were for the most part not professionally trained guides. At the end of our visit to Strasbourg we were treated to a forced march back to the coaches that lasted a half hour as we hustled nonstop for two miles. I think the coaches could have parked closer---for a price that Viking did not want to pay. There is one free excursion every day. There were also several "optional" ones during the week, for additional money. One of those went to Kolmar, France, late afternoon. Really, it was nothing more than a bus shuttle to and from a town less than 20 minutes from the dock, plus a walk through the town. Not included was a visit to the church where Matthias Grunewald's Isenheim Altarpiece could be found. When I suggested to the Cruise Director that it really should be included for those who chose to go ---it was only five minutes from where the walking tour ended---- he commented that most people have never heard of it. Well, true, but isn't travel about learning things you did not already know??? This is an Art History 101 work, meaning it is important enough to get into the most basic textbooks. I went on my own, and most of my table mates that night regretted they had not been informed of its importance. Our fellow passengers were mostly new to river cruises, but experienced in ocean cruises. Just like us. They were all Americans. Just like us. Most were over 60 and looked it, just like us (although my husband does not look his age, and he appeared young compared to most of the others.) Anyone younger than 50 would think they had made a mistake booking this cruise. There is no entertainment to speak of. We ended up watching reruns of Downton Abbey most nights in our cabin. There is one gathering place with a bar, and that is it. No amenities. No shows, No gambling. No coffee house. No spa. No fitness room. No pool. No ice cream off hours (actually, no food except cookies between meals, period, and no room service ever.) The "free specialty coffees" available 24/7 come out of a machine, and not a good one. Even the tea bags at that self-serve station are cheap. A number of the less positive reviews comment on the over-ripe fruit on these ships. It appears to be all of them. I watched some plums go from ripe to dead as each day passed. There is wifi, but it is spotty. At one town we docked so that the reception dish was under a bridge. No wifi that night. Christmas Markets---they are on both the French side and the German side of the river. The German ones are more authentic. The French ones are massive and commercialized to where hordes descend on the weekends. More to the point ---and I should have thought of this!---if you take a Christmas Market cruise, you are cruising during the shortest days of the year. It was dark by 6. So very little of the river was seen, because it was dark when the ship cruised the river. We went through many locks, which would have been interesting, if one could have seen them. We had only one day when the ship cruised during the day, and the Cruise Director gave a multi-hour talk about what we passed. I wish I could say I was impressed, but after a while every small ruined castle on a hill looked like another pile of old stones. I was much more interested when we passed the campuses of major chemical plants. They went on for miles, and at night looked like something in a sci-fi movie. We are still deciding what we thought about all of this. My husband is not inclined to do another river cruise. We both do not think it represents a good value, or a good way to see these towns. Viking has some rough edges, especially in staff and service levels. Better to take trains and book hotels and go to towns we really want to see, or take an ocean cruise and enjoy better spaces and amenities. Read Less

My family of four sailed out of Basel in December, 2104 on the Viking Magni Rhine Getaway. Positives: New beautiful ship with a sleek and comfortable design; extraordinarily well-designed staterooms that maximize space and efficiency (NOTE: see below note regarding room odor); wonderful captain and terrific tour guides. Negatives: 1.Having taken a Uniworld Seine River cruise two years earlier, I can say that Viking service does not match Uniworld's. If you can afford the price difference, opt for a Uniworld cruise. This was seen most strikingly in the dining room when at times, there was five to ten minute wait to get a fork or a refill on coffee (this may seem minor to some but it's a little frustrating when it happens numerous times.) 2.This lesser quality of service was also reflected in the odor (sewage like) that was often detected on the Main Deck/lowest level. While the front desk staffer curtly and a little rudely brushed off the complaints, we often saw maintenance personnel working outside those same staterooms when the odor was particularly strong. If you're booking a room on the Main Deck on the Magni, avoid those rooms closest to the main stairs. 3. Because of the holidays, our itinerary was a little different than advertised. There was little explanation for the changes or information on the substitute ports. If we hadn't been on a Uniworld cruse, I'd probably would've have given Viking a better review but now I see a definite difference in the level of service. River cruising is a terrific way to travel Europe (awesome for families!) A Viking cruise is still a treat but if money is no object, book a Uniworld trip. Read Less

We arrived at Budapest Airport at 10:30 PM after 11 hours on airplanes and found we had NO luggage? We were met after the luggage experience, requiring the filling out of paperwork for LOST Luggage, by a individual with a sign displaying "Viking in Red", with NO other identification? We were SO tired we didn't think to ask him for ID? Got in his van and spent a 20 minute riding to the SHIP in the RAIN! We boarded the Ship Magni at the Port of Budapest, but were supposed to be on the Viking Baldur, which we received notice 24 hours before we left home, it would not be available? So much for a smooth start! We were told by the check-in personnel at the ship, we were the LAST people to arrive on the ship! OK, the airfare was arranged by Viking?? The Viking Desk Clerk thought we were not going to show! We were shown to our Stateroom and Crashed! The next morning I called the on- board "Hotel Manager" to inquire about our luggage? We were told that our Airline, Air France LOST the Luggage 90% of the time? If that was true, why would Viking continue to BOOK travelers on this carrier? We were into the 3rd day of the cruise, before our luggage was delivered at the Port at Vienna!! Finally, we had clothes and the other people on the ship could stop talking about the people wearing the same clothes for 3 days!! We were told we could go SHOPPING in ONE of the Ports to purchase clothes?? Really, and what about the tours and sites for 3 DAYS? The ship was behind schedule for the first 4 days of the cruise. Stops at different locations (industrial ports) with bus trips to other locations to meet the ship? Every thing was blamed on WATER Level of the river? Well, with ALL their Long ships, was this their 1st experience with water levels? Again, distressing answers to Questions? We finally got back on schedule at Nurnberg! The personnel on the ship in the dining room, cabin, service desk, bar, and lounge were excellent! The stateroom, (Balcony) was very clean and the accommodations were good! The FOOD was substandard and the portions were SMALL. The advertising said, "Elegant and Food of the Area" , well we had mushroom soup 10 times, named differently each meal?? My wife was told there would be Lobster one evening and all she saw was "crayfish" in the soup on one occasion? The Chef was Indian, and raved about his menu selections at every afternoon briefing, conducted in the Lounge! We never saw any Indian Dishes, but why should we?? We were not on an Asian Cruise! If you have been on an Ocean Cruise, you will be appalled by this cuisine!! We believe that of the 14 dinners, only 3 were acceptable, not wonderful! The best meal of the day was Breakfast! No comment on Lunch, Sad!! The tours were very difficult for anyone with mobility problems and most were only exterior adventures, with questionable tour guides! These guides continually repeated information over and over again! Really, a third grade approach to adults!! We were offered a Musical Opera Concert on one evening and the location was an alternate site, because of remodeling of the Opera House and the chairs were so uncomfortable, that at the break, we moved to the rear of the room, so we could move around! My back was in such pain, I could not appreciate the event! We were Stuffed into an area for half the size of the attendees, on Strait BACK kitchen chairs!! A footnote to this (remodel comment) Most of the MAIN historic sites had (Scaffolding Erected) on Castles, and Churches at every stop!! Looks like they are spending the Tourist Dollars for the next round of visitors?? By the way, we have NO physical problems that effect our mobility! We have been on Ocean Cruises and tried this cruise because my wife had NEVER been to Europe. I spent 3 years in Germany and had let her know some of the highlights, before leaving the USA. I was concerned that she have a GOOD time and was only marginally concerned about MY feelings concerning the cruise! Well, I spent most of my time trying to make up for the shortcomings of Viking. We felt we would know after this cruise, whether we would do anymore ventures of this type? What do you think? Finally, TOO MUCH MONEY for the experience, and OVER advertised for the Actual Product! Don't waste your money, traveling through 68 LOCKS for 14 days surviving an experience you can do without! Read Less

We sailed on the Viking Magni (the newest of the long ships) from Budapest to Amsterdam on it's second voyage. This was our second river cruise, but I cannot compare it to the one I took 20 years ago. We have cruised on Holland America, Cunard, and our last two were on Regent 7 Seas. Comparing a Viking river ship to Regent is not a fair comparison. Viking does not claim to be a 5 star line, and it is not one. The new long ships are very nice, and larger than previous Viking ships. We paid for one of the suites which gives you a larger bathroom, and a sitting room with a couch, larger second TV, and is double the width, so you have a walkout, and a French balcony. For the significantly higher price, we did not see the value in the suite after looking inside the regular rooms. We also upgraded to the silver spirits package which is 598 euros for the two of you. It is not worth it. You can drink what you what whenever you want when you want it. Liquor selection is good, and you have about 5 beers instead of one to drink. The wines were a big disappointment. The ad says you are upgraded to premium wines from around the world instead of just wines from Hungary, and Germany. We tasted the complimentary wines that everyone can have at lunch, and dinner, but would rate them as one buck Chuck, yes lower than the Charles Shaw you get at Trader Joe's. The premium wines were in the $7-9 dollar price you find in a store. Their highest rated one (only California wine) was 2011 Hacienda Cab - check out it's price online $7.99 - $8.99. You have the option of buying wine in each city on your stops and bringing it on board with no corkage fees. For 11-12 Euros we found wines that would have been far superior to the German, and Hungarian offerings. If we cruise with Viking again I would buy my wines at each port city, and not get the silver spirits package. BTW two others told me they bribed a bartender for free drinks. Breakfast and lunch offerings were fine and as expected. Dinners were an issues on numerous evenings. The first and third nights fish offerings were way overcooked. They gladly would bring you a different selection from the menu. Again we were spoiled by the quality of the food on Regent 7 Seas, but the dinners were way below what even had on Holland America. A lot of the older passengers felt the food was fine, but to those of us under age 65 the quality was not very good. This was the opinion of 10 people in our age bracket. The first 10 days were great, but starting with four nights to go the electrical issues started in the middle of the night. Room lights came on for about 10 seconds, five minutes later the TV in the bedroom came on displaying a computer reboot screen, and you could not turn it off. It went off after a few minutes, followed by the second TV coming on. This cycle repeated a second time. The climate system shut down for about 2 hours. Only emergency lights were in in the hallways. NO ANNOUNCEMENT WAS MADE. The next morning we tied up to the side of the river 25 miles from our destination. We were told after breakfast that the state of the art energy management system was having issues, and an electrical engineer would arrive at lunch time. We were bused to our tour for the day. A second pair of engineers from the shipbuilder arrived at 7PM. They claimed to have it fixed, and set sailed at about midnight. The next day we were bused 2 hours to Heidleburg (not our scheduled stop in Koblenz). Upon returning to the ship it had not moved, and the issues started up again. I finally cornered the captain and had him tell me that they only had enough power to run one engine, but the hotel manager, and cruise director only stated that they were working on the issues. The next morning still moored in the middle of nowhere we were told to pack up, and the cruise was ending two days early. We were bused to Frankfurt for a one hour city tour (nothing to see), then bused to Mainz for a night in the Hilton. The final day we were bused two hours to Boppard for a 2.5 hour cruise on the Rhine in an older day ship, then bused 5 hours to Amsterdam for our final night in the airport Sheraton. We encountered 16 hours of unscheduled bus rides, lost three days of our stops, lost half a nights sleep, and lost a lot of time cruising the rivers especially the Rhine. The next cruise was going to be disrupted until the ships issues were resolved. In all fairness management had to work with corporate to arrive hotels for 190 people, reschedule some tours at the last minute, and try to make the best of the situation Read Less
