Went on this cruise with friends who had previously cruised a European Viking river cruise. We wanted to see areas close to where our ancestors had come from, including Germany, and the Netherlands. The history and educational aspect was part of the reason for cruising, and we can say the entire trip was fascinating! The food was exceptional, and the servers very attentive. They even made sure to inform my husband if there were pine nuts in the recipes, so he could avoid them. The room was always clean, and water replenished daily. The laundry was back to our room in a timely manner. ONE thing that might have improved the trip would have been if there was self serve laundry, so we wouldn't have had to wash in the sink and drape clothes around the room! Our expectations were exceeded. We are anxiously looking forward to our next cruise, this November, to the West Indies! Read Less

The best vacation we ever had. I can not find fault with any part of this great cruise. First, the customer first attitude is instilled top to bottom. The ship was more than perfect. The cabins were so well built , beautiful, functional and the Scandinavian design was great. The bath featured a heated floor, ample room, luxury bath products and was kept spotlessly clean by the steward who came at least three times a day, when we were at Breakfast, at lunch and during dinner to turn down the beds. On the first day he noticed I had a CPAP breathing machine. He asked if it should have distilled water. A large two gallon container was in the room when we got back from dinner. The meals were superb, always a regional dish was offered as well as seven or eight entrées. The first course had four choices, a cheese course, desserts and beer and wine were free at meals. The tours were beyond compare, with gentle options for people not very fit. They have thought of everything and from the time you land to the time you board your flight home, they are with you every step. Read Less

this was our second Viking cruise. Wanted a longer trip, since we were going to Europe. All worked perfectly. Ship great. people nice. Weather great. Was surprised by some extras given to us. Well worth the price. Didn't know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. Ship quite contemporary, with nice touches. Food was gourmet, including breakfast, lunch, and dinners. Had wine every nite. Something I'm not used to. Can get quite spoiled on a trip like this. Met with tours at every stop. Local guides were very knowledgeable and provided us with great insight of all the areas we stopped at. Had lots of free time on tours to explore on our own. Also, enjoyed slowly cruising the rivers, as the host narrated along the way. Saw many castles, vineyards, towns along the way. Made for a very interesting history class. All in all, would highly recommend a Viking River Cruise. Read Less

We had no intention of taking a river cruise. In fact, we had several other vacations planned for summer of 2016 - backpacking in the mountains, camping extensively, and canoe tripping in northern Canada. When my husband ruptured his Achilles tendon, all of our plans were cancelled and we started trying to figure out how to enjoy our summer. A timely brochure arrived in the mail and, before we knew it, we were on our way to the most amazing consolation trip anyone could experience. Everything was outstanding - our veranda room was spacious and well appointed - we loved sitting on the veranda enjoying the view as it passed by. We were enamoured with the Aquavit Terrace and ate every single meal there. (I'm sure the dining room was lovely but, as you might have gathered, we're outdoorsy people :) ) The food was of exceptional quality and beautifully, expertly prepared. We purchased the Silver Service option and enjoyed a lovely selection of wines, beers and spirits. The decor and ambience of the Viking Longships is excellent - we loved our time on board which was considerable given my husband's ambulation issues. There are SO many excellent shore tours included in the trip (we felt the whole thing was an incredible value) but we opted to stay aboard some days so my husband could rest his foot. The most impressive feature of all is the quality of the staff which was consistently excellent across all categories. Well trained in the arts of serving and exceptionally friendly without being obsequious - we really enjoyed the team in the lounge who also served the Aquavit Terrace and believe their presence added greatly to our enjoyment of the trip. We came home raving about our experience and, before too long, my mother decided she needed to take the trip herself. She and my aunt are going in October - I know they'll have an amazing time. I'm jealous - I would do the entire trip again in a heartbeat. Read Less

The shore excursions were very informative with plenty of time to go off on our own. The buses used to transport us to our on shore excursions were very clean . The crew was very knowledgable on where to go at each stop if you chose not to participate in the excursions. The food was very well prepared and the presentation was what you would expect from a five star trip. The shipboard activities were excellent. This was our first cruise and would recommend this to those who are not interested in a ocean cruise. It was a nice comfortable atmosphere with considerably less people. You can be as active or social as you want. Viking definitely provides a five star experience. This was our first trip to Europe as well and the help we received at the airports was wonderful. Each port and Viking tour at each port was OUTSTANDING. The crew on our River Boat was very helpful and I must say they all went out of their way to please the passengers. This was our first river cruise and I must say that one sees sights that we would never see cruising on one of the oceans. My wife said it was like taking a train through the center of town. I only rated this cruise with 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. First, the cabins were truly small. We didn't even have a chair in the room to sit on. It was sit on the bed or stand. The bathroom and shower made an Ocean liner cabin seem humongous. The second reason for disappointment was the lack of things to do in the evening. We missed the many different options offered on our ocean cruises. It would take an awful lot to make me consider another river cruise. We will be sailing on the ocean in 3 weeks and then again in October. We are truly addicted to travel on the ocean via a large cruise ship. Read Less

It was recommended by several friends. We were able to go early to have 4 days to explore Budapest on our own which was very enjoyable. The embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly with the staff handling things very professionally. The ship was outstanding and the staff was superb. We were able to upgrade to a mini suite shortly after we arrived and that cabin was wonderful. Because of river conditions we had to do a split ship where we started out on the Baldur then transferred half way through the cruise to the Magni. We were very anxious about this procedure but the staff and crew handled everything flawlessly! With regard to dining, we have to say we preferred the food and the chef on the Baldur. As for entertainment, activities, excursions, everything was pretty good. My friend and I enjoyed singing along with the piano man. Since our cruise straddled the Fourth of July, we started a sing along with many cruise companions who were in the lounge. FUN!! Regarding the excursions, as is common, some of our guides were excellent and a couple were just OK. Having done more than a dozen ocean cruises we enjoyed the lack of the hurly burly that is sometimes associated with them. The service was top notch and we appreciated the assistance of our cabin steward and everyone on the ship. Our Cruise Director, Mathias, was especially good and very knowledgeable about all our stops and scenes along the way. The concierge and her assistant were wonderful. While we were in Austria they made arrangements for my husband and me to hire a car to drive to my ancestral village not far from Vienna. That was a moving experience to see from where my great-grandparents emigrated. They also made my birthday and our anniversary celebration a time to remember. Would we go again? You bet we would!! A river cruise is such a different experience from an ocean cruise on a huge ship. It is so relaxing and tranquil and we weren't ready for the trip to end. Read Less

We are experienced Ocean cruisers, but this was our first river cruise. Embarkation went very smoothly, we were met by Viking staff at the airport and bussed to our ship. Our cabin was ready on our arrival and our luggage arrived minutes later. We embarked on Viking Baldur and then did a ship swap 7 days later to Viking Magni. The ship swap was a piece of cake, very smoothly handled by Viking staff. Both ships were spotlessly clean. We had a standard cabin, very small, no balcony, small window at chin level to me (I'm 6' tall). Very comfortable bed, nice bathroom, adequate storage space. It was nice, but I won't cruise in that cabin again, no place to sit down except on the bed. Next cruise will be with a veranda. Cabin was kept spotlessly clean by Viking staff on both ships. Food was excellent over all, only a couple of meals didn't suit me. Dining room was very well staffed, and the staff was courteous, attentive, polite, helpful - excellent! The same was true of the lounge and the terrace. The ports were all very nice, and the shore tour guides were the best we've ever encountered. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our shore tours. We debarked in Amsterdam for our transfer to Schiphol, which was arranged by our Concierge, another absolutely excellent, helpful Viking staffer. So, the ships were great, the tours terrific, the food excellent, the ports fun, but the very best part of a Viking cruise is their wonderful, friendly, courteous, helpful, well-trained people! Several couples were talking and came up with the idea of a river cruise in Europe. Viking was the preferred line and proved to be the best. A true 5 Star Hotel & Restaurant rolled into one that moved from Budapest to Amsterdam with plenty of sights & side trips to entertain and keep us in awe. This was a trip that gave us the most bang for our bucks... and truly relaxing. The shore excursions were planned to allow flexibility with a standard tour or to branch out and explore on our own. As with any cruise, enjoyment is enhanced with an energetic cruise director & concierge... This boat had both. The crew was extremely helpful & attentive to our needs, both the 'boat' crew and the 'restaurant' staff. The meals that were served could not have been better. The palate never lacked for experiencing tasty and tempting creations from our head chef. The overall amenities of the boat itself added to the relaxing atmosphere and enjoyment of our group. Everyone, entertainment (Stein), ships crew were very nice and friendly. The food was excellent and the chef came around almost every dinner time to see how we were doing and if the food was fine. We even took a tour of the kitchen and could ask any question about the service or if we wanted any special food. We explored every town the ship docked at and our guides were always very helpful. There was some sort of entertainment every night whether it was the crew or someone or group coming on board the ship. Our cabin was always kept clean. This was the Tulips and Windmills Cruise, our second with Viking. Choose this cruise to see Tulips and sites in The Netherlands/Belgium. This is not a cruise with great views from ship. FYI our group of six was 55-65, the younger end of spectrum for this cruise. Some observations about Viking and this cruise: * As with previous Viking cruise the staff was excellent, from the cruise director to our transportation coordinator from the airport... service top notch. *Did the pre cruise package in Amsterdam, Not pleased with hotel location, i would advise checking where you will be carefully based on what you wish to do in your pre-cruise time. * Ship/ cabin wonderful, very efficient, clean, comfortable. Cabin service perfect! *Entertainment caters to an older client I would like to see entertainment/music from this century, *Food is very good, above average for a cruise. Wait staff Fabulous! *Loved the port choices, some excursions better than others, ranged from A+ to C-. Some guides excellent others need to make their program's shorter/crisper I would take another Viking River Cruise. I recommend them highly for first time travelers to Europe who do not want to deal with the details of airports/trains/transport. Viking operates a wonderful floating hotel, allowing you to see places without moving your stuff!! Read Less

We had heard Viking was very good to cruise with. It met and exceeded our expectations. We have cruised on the Princess, Norwegian, an now the Viking, it far exceeded any of the others. The crew when acting as a guide were far superior to any guides we have ever had. The evening talks on what was the next day served as an excellent spring board for the next day activities. The entertainment at night at the local ports was often far superior to what we had seen on large ships. The intimacy of the small tables and excellent cuisine with outstanding service allowed to make multiple friends each new day. Our steward quickly understood our quirks and habits, making our room even more habitual. We never woke once during the night as the ship moved. The ship was not able to get tickets . I was slightly annoyed with the answer,we were told not everyone wanted to see that. That is a major attraction for Amsterdam,so many people wanted to see it. It should have been offered as a tour to take. Over all I thought the tour was good, but the sides tours should have more depth to them, not should drive by and say hi. The chef was very accomodating,he cater to all special needs for the food. There was plenty of variety. Each night he made us sorbet of a different flavor as we are lactose intolerant. I wanted to experience the tulip fields of Holland. And they were magnificent!!! The tour of the windmills was also a draw. Loved it!! Only wish we had more time in the tulip fields and gardens. The Viking cruise itself was terrific, as usual. The attention to detail was amazing. For example, one afternoon when we returned to the ship after a walking tour, we were handed a pure white tulip. I thought the gesture was lovely, but also thought, "What am I going to do with this tulip?" When we got to our rooms, there on the counter was a crystal bud vase! The room cabin, the dining room and the front desk and concierge service were impeccable. The food was just yummy--lots of selections at every meal. Our veranda room had plenty of space. The itinerary was busy, but not too busy. We especially enjoyed visiting with the locals in Hoorn. We got to spend an hour in a home and asked questions about life in Hoorn and were served tea and apple strudel!!! Although we booked on March 1st, for a departure date of March 31st, we were amazed at how smoothly our booking process went. Thank you, Viking, for a trip of a lifetime. Read Less

Great food. Nice that there was always some standard, right side of the menu items. Nice that there were two options of where to dine. Only bad meal was the celebration night, everybody scrambled for seats and buffet at same time. Buffet worked great at breakfast and lunch since is was over an extended time. Service excellent and staff very attentive. Excursions were good mostly, except one private walking tour we took in Amsterdam was much better than the sponsored one. Pickup and transfers flawless. There was a good amount of free time but little what I would call scenic river cruising. A little surprised at age of group. We are in our mid 60's and the vast majority were 70+. Maybe we should have expected this being tulips and windmills. This was a problem on excursions since the slower people set the pace or the groups got widely separated and at times people got lost/left behind. Wheelchairs dont work well on gravel or cobblestone. Would had been disappointed with a veranda or suite since we were sometimes docked sandwiched between other boats, although when docked the last place we wanted to be was in our cabin. TV and wifi didnt work or was spotty, but again we spent very little time in the cabin and tv and computers are not why we took the voyage There was plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor) on top or in the lounge areas. The room was good (french balcony) shower a little tight but fine. Bed was the best ever, I even made an inquiry to find out more info on it (beat our 3k pillow top hands down). Overall was a very relaxing, quiet, and safe time. Still working on losing the pounds I gained even with all the walking. . Read Less

We chose to have a French balcony room and were so glad we did. We would not have used the veranda with the weather in October and had better views from our room. The Magni and its staff were excellent. We were warmly welcomed and felt at home after the first day. While it was a disappointment to not have as much time in Budapest as planned and to have to change ships (to the Baldour) halfway through the cruise, Viking made a great effort to compensate for the inconvenience. The Viking River Cruise longship from Amsterdam to Budapest doesn't go to Budapest it goes to Nuremberg, then to where you get to pack your bags again then get on a bus for three + hours to Passau where you get another barge. And unpack your bags. That's right your Viking Longship is a barge. A self powered barge, but a barge just the same. Which is not all bad. Stable and roomy come to mind. All of the crew are great! But the people in charge of running the cruise are not. They lie by omission. Asking about barge changes will get you no where. They haven't run a single barge from Amsterdam to Budapest in over three months and they don't want you to know this. The office did not respond to a single inquiry. Other than a 'don't reply' acknowledgement of email receipt. They ( corporate headquarters) put all the burden on the crew aboard the barge. The barge also SKIPPED THE REGENSBURG STOP! unless you want to take another long bus ride. Then the second barge DOES NOT GO TO BUDAPEST IT GOES TO KORMARON 60 + miles TO BUDAPEST FOR THE FIRST OF THREE BUS TRIPS TO BUDAPEST. Over an hour and 15 minutes each way. To summarize, no single Viking boat is going from Amsterdam to Budapest, and hasn't for three months. Even the second boat goes only to KORMARON. The Viking company ( based in Switzerland) is keeping this really quiet. They sent me an email two days before departure saying this might happen. Never mentioning Kormaron. However most of the passengers onboard were completely shocked at this trip changing news. And I, like many passengers was already in Amsterdam. Making it too late to back out. Total failure for Viking. Also VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE UNDER 65 DON'T TAKE THIS TRIP. All senior citizens are not infirm or stodgy but a sizable fraction are. I am 59 and quite probably the youngest guest. Also many days your boat will be sandwiched between other boats making the additional expense of veranda worthless. Read Less

Changing ships because of low water is certainly not the fault of Viking and they would very much wished it didn't have to happen. The cruise director made it sound like the low water thing was just happening when we all know it has happened for many cruises this year. Food was above expectations as was the entertainment. On disembarkation the Viking staff helped us all the way to the airport checkin. I believe that I would have liked more time in Budapest and Vienna but other than that the ports were well planned and touring at each port was made very enjoyable with knowledgeable guides. This was my second river cruise and first Viking adventure. We ran into some difficulties due to the low water levels in the Danube. We had a change in our longship. We used the Baldur from Amsterdam to Nurenberg. We had all of our bags transferred a bus to take them to the Magi, which was docked in Passau. We were transported by bus to Passau accompanied by a guide, who discussed the points of interest along our way. We continued our journey to Budapest on the Magi. Both staffs and crews were very helpful during the trip and transfer. I enjoyed the special events arranged onboard, which included a glass blowing demonstration, wine tasting, strudel making, a discussion of how the locks work on the river, and the captain's party. I received special attention due to dietary needs. The menu was discussed each morning at breakfast so I could eliminate inappropriate choices. Special meal accommodations were made when required. We thoroughly enjoyed our leisurely walking tours. The pace was suitable to our abilities and we were able to see all key point of interest. I especially enjoyed the local tour guides, who shared their knowledge of their town's history. I plan on taking more river cruises on the Viking longships. I enjoyed the walking tours of the towns and the views along the river. I really savored my experience. Read Less

We were a group of eight who all had a great time. While we had to change boats at Nuremburg the staff did all they could to make this a seamless transition. Staff were great on both boats and were most welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. In reality, the staff were a major factor in contributing to this excellent trip. The food was 11/10 and we all enjoyed the silver spirits package. A good range of shore excursion with a good insight to the history and people. The majority of tour guides were excellent. A good balance of available free time after shore excursions. The additional excursions which could be purchased were also informative and value for money, especially Nuremberg. From our persective we were not fussed re the folk dancing provided one night, other events were very good. The Tour Director (Martin) did a great job in his evening briefing of the next day's shore excursions and in his overall role as our Tour Director. The only negative (significant issue) was we upgraded to a Veranda Stateroom but on numerous occasions the veranda was of no benefit as we were tied against a wharf, another Viking ship, facing a wall or shore wall and on this basis I would question the value of spending $3,200 to upgrade to a Veranda Stateroom. Other members of our group all had a French balcony on the other side of the boat and had far better views than we did throughout the trip. Only reference to this in literature was "occasional" limited view but from our experience this was certainly greater than occasional. This said, we look forward to taking another Viking cruise. We loved the cruise. We started off with a few glitches with Delta air costing us our first night in Budapest and the drought causing us to leave our first ship for the Magni in Nuremberg. The staff and crew made the transition possible with very little inconvenience. Being able to keep our cruise director-Martin and our concierge-Marco was a big plus. They maintained the quality of service at the highest level. Once we boarded the Magni we felt as if the high level service was ramped up even higher as if to apologize for the disruption which was not possible to alter due to the low water level. The tours both included and optional were very educational and enjoyable. The entertainment on board was very good except for the seating in the lounge with too many seats facing away from the entertainment. Short of having less couches and more swivel seating there is no way to fix that problem. We started in Budapest but had to leave after Passau due to the low water level. Service was excellent. We asked for extra pillows on the Baldur and when we arrived on the Magni there were extra pillows already present. Some of the pillows were so compessible that they were more like crepe by morning.
