March 31, 2019 on Viking Magni River Cruise Budapest to Passau. First suggestion, do your homework. We booked a French “Balcony” (sliding door) on 3rd Fl. Very small. Just enough room for a double bed. No chairs so reading or TV is lying on bed. Small bathroom. Very efficient but claustrophobic. Room has fridge but only useful for bringing in shore beverages or food. Hint. Don’t upgrade the liquor package. Buy duty free or in town and save $$ as you can bring this on board and no corkage. Fridge is useless otherwise as no room service and cannot bring any bottles from bar into room (even with their best upgraded liquor package!). WiFi is free as it should be because it was terrible. With modern service I’m sure this could be improved if they wanted to but would increase expenses. Service was impeccable from everyone. As were the excursions, even those included. That is the expectation and the standard for this caliber of cruise. The entrees we had were all good but not exceptional. Superb buffet is always in addition to table menu service. Best meal was grilled sea bass served on last day. Meals are mostly served in main dining room with tables of 6-8+. Great opportunity to build friendships and share conversations with fellow travelers. Still good value and a we hope to go again but equipped with new knowledge to fine tune our experience. Read Less

Always wanted to do a river cruise in Europe and this one provided the most highlights and included shore excursions. Going that far, we wanted to spend more time so we chose a 2 week cruise. The reason for the poor review is the way Viking handled the low water situation. We had inquired about this problem before we left for our cruise and was told that there was no issue. They lied! We heard from the crew that the situation had been ongoing for 3 months! The main reason we take cruises is to avoid having to repack as we move from location to location. On this "cruise" we had to pack and unpack 3 times during the cruise and spent 19 hours on busses being shuttled form one ship n to another. We missed one location altogether and stayed on 3 different ships and a hotel! Had we known this, we would have waited to take the cruise at another time! This was an expensive trip and we feel it did not deliver the experience we expected. Most other people on board felt the same way. We all received an email less than a week before the cruise informing us of one possible issue in one section of the river. It turned out to be 4 sections! This was obviously too late to cancel. Viking has offered us 25% of our cruise fare off of another Viking cruise as compensation. I don't feel I can trust Viking to be honest and doubt that I will ever use this cruise line again! Very disappointed. That said, the included shore excursions were wonderful with local guides who spoke English very well as did the crew. Meals on board were fantastic with a good selection. My only complaint about the entertainment and activities on board were that they occurred at 9 pm when I was ready for bed! Embarkation and disembarkation was a delight after the cattle calls of ocean cruises. Read Less

We chose the cruise for the same reasons as Judhess. Because of the low water, our trip was a big disappointment. After the first night spent on the Viking Idun in Budapest, we made our first transition to another Viking Ship (this time the Magni). And, still, after a few days we made a change to another ship and then the last night to a hotel in Amsterdam. We spent many hours being transported by busses to go on excursions we had signed up for and some that the staff selected for us. A big disappointment was arriving in Cologne for a tour of the Cathedral only to find that our arrival was timed during a time when the cathedral was closed to tours. We had a tour that was dismal, ate lunch at a restaurant and then on the 20 minutes after lunch on our way to the bus, we slipped into the Cathedral for about 8 minutes. Terrible planning. We also missed the windmills. Originally we were offered at voucher for our next trip of 25% of what we paid for our GrandEuropean trip. Upon arriving home, that voucher was canceled and we did receive a voucher for our next Viking Cruise with the value of half the expense of our cruise. Likely they read the surveys, which if like ours were quite negative. It is too bad that Viking was not honest up front, had refunded our money and we could have chosen a cruise of our choice with out all of the monkey business. We know of other cruise lines that have done that when they could not provide the services they originally offered. Tour guides for excursions were mostly outstanding except for... Cologne and Nuremberg. Food was marginal to very good. Service was good.Kaitlyn, our activity director was wonderful, but ended up having to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what we were going to do next. Friends of ours took a similar cruise on AMA waterways in June and raved about the food, the service the tours and VIKING, TAKE NOTICE... the outstanding evening entertainment... they had folk lore dancers, music that was not mostly opera. They did not play three nights worth of trivia games. On the night they were in Budapest, the ship even cruised the docking area so they could see the illuminations of lights. The German night was the most fun in the dining room. Of course, we will use our 50% voucher from our past trip, and all I can say is, Viking should have refunded the 50% of our money AND, we only hope, the next trip is as good as we have heard Viking cruises can be! Getting on each ship was handled well, but the first night we learned we were moving to the magni the next day! Read Less

We wanted a long cruise where we could truly relax. The 15 day cruise was really great. We celebrated our 40th anniversary on board. We had beautiful weather and the shore excursions were very enjoyable. Our dining experience was very nice. We were well taken care of. The stop in Nuremberg was very moving. The guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating. Our director Marie was lots of fun. She kept us all entertained. The onboard staff operated like a well tuned clock. They anticipated our every need. The front desk helped us arrange a nice bike ride along the river that was very enjoyable. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting a relaxed cruise along 3 different rivers. The only thing I would recommend would be the serving of local wines. While we like Argentine Malbec at home in the USA and while traveling in Argentina, we did expect European wines would be served to us at dinner. Read Less

Beware the excellent marketing pitch given by Viking Cruise line. To see their commercials you imagine days of luxurious vistas and exclusive sightseeing. What we got on our 14-day cruise on the Danube and Rhine were hotels, ship changes and a dozen bus rides. When we were on board, we were often tied to boats three abreast or moored in industrial shipyards. The view from our patio was the patio of the ship tied up to us. Viking spokesmen blamed this on the drought and shallow river beds which they did not disclose to us until five days before our vacation. In reality this had been going on for several months. For our inconvenience, we were offered a 25% credit on a future cruise which will never happen in my lifetime. This is billed as a high-end vacation but was actually shuttling with mobs of people to crowded tourist areas in Hungary, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. Buyer beware! Read Less

Food was ok, not a big selection.Got very tired of busing everywhere, especially last day. Spent 8 hours on a bus. I paid for a river cruise! Saw some beautiful places. No place to workout, half the time, the walking deck was closed. Minimal entertainment. Not much to do on board. Some of the optional excursions were good. Loved the 3 day pre cruise in Prague. Worth the upgrade to be right in town. Gift shop is a joke unless you want to buy overpriced Viking items. While they gave us a 25% credit towards a future cruise, unfortunately that will probably go to waste as to why would I subject myself to that experience again? Read Less

Recommended by travel agent. The ship allowed an obviously sick man to board and infect numerous passengers and the crew. He should because of that person, I was infected with the flu and missed 80% of the cruise and tours, being confined to may stateroom because of illness caused by the sick individual. It was very unfair. One of the tours had to be cancelled because of a river closure. Viking refunded $40 of the $49 and kept $9. The air reservations were made by incompetent people who don't how to allow for time to get off on plane, go through security and customs and make the connecting flight. We missed the connecting flight and had to wait for a much later flight. We arrived in Budapest after midnight. Viking did not meet us at the airport. They said it was too late (their fault) and could not inconvenience an employee. Only passengers should be inconvenienced. That was the attitude throughout the trip. We had to take a taxi from the airport to the ship and Viking refused to refund the tip we had to pay the taxi driver. This was the worst cruise ship experience I have ever had. I will never travel with Viking and again. What was good? The food and consideration of the chef for my inability to eat anything solid for days. The chef made me fresh ginger tea, than broth until I could eat solid food. I have high praise for the chef. Read Less

We were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary with the Grand European tour. This is 15 nights. We went from Amsterdam to Budapest, but you can also book going the other direction. The Magni and it’s staff managed to be efficient and friendly while being both elegant and relaxed. The longships are well designed and comfortable. We were concerned that it would be difficult to make friends, however, the majority of people were open and friendly middle aged or better couples. There were a couple of honeymooners and multi-generational families with older teens, but everyone was mixing by the second week. We got to know lovely people from Australia, England, and parts of the U.S that we have not visited. The tables in the dining room are for 6, and the lounge areas are also, so it was not difficult to mix naturally. We also got to know people in our excursion group pretty well. We booked the air and a pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam, along with an optional tour. So glad we did! Viking staff took good care of us from the moment we arrived to claim our luggage at the Amsterdam airport. Our airline had lost my bag, and the Viking guide helped me talk with the mostly Dutch-speaking airline employee. It was delivered to our hotel that afternoon. When it was time to go home, an airline strike affected our plans, but the desk staff handled it for us, so we could enjoy our last day without worry. This was a wonderful, stress-free way to see many places and get a taste of the culture on a first-class floating hotel. Highly recommend. My only wish would be more outside dining space. The ports of call and included excursions ranged from enjoyable to amazing. Not all will suit everyone’s fancy, but we learned many new things each place we went. Lots of freedom to explore on your own as well. Read Less

We had been thinking about a river cruise for some time. We travel a good deal but have been tiring of the pack/unpack routine between destinations and were looking for a trip where we could relax and let others make the plans. We could not have been more pleased! From the beginning of the trip until the end we felt pampered. Our flight over to Amsterdam was uneventful and had no trouble meeting our Viking representatives at the airport. With just the two of us, we were a little apprehensive about making friends but that immediately disappeared as we gathered as a group to head to the ship. By the end of our cruise I don't believe that there was anyone on board (staff included) that we had not met. And now, we have a new group of lifelong friends. Our cabin was ready when we arrived so we immediately settled in. Our expectations for the ship, cabin and community spaces were already set high but, upon arrival, they exceeded our expectations. The food quality, quantity and presentations were over the top. Unfortunately so much so that we both gained weight! One of the things we enjoy is interacting with the staff and we learned so much about their different cultures which added to our overall experience. We were always greeted with a smile...not to mention our Cruise Director who was exceptionally prepared, always seemed to be in form from the time we awoke until retiring, and made every effort to insure a grand experience. Being two of the younger guests we were a little apprehensive about the excursions and activities. Once again we were pleasantly surprised to find that there were a variety of tours and activities geared to different fitness levels, so we selected activities that met our own. Each port was well selected with plenty to see, and our tour guides helped to fill in the blanks. We hope that this is the first of many future Viking river cruises! Read Less

After over 30 'ocean' cruises we were excited to experience our first river cruise. We chose Viking based partly upon their itinerary and partly upon their 'dominance' in the river cruise market. As I sit here after over two weeks aboard, I am sad to report that though there were good times, accentuated by many very devoted crew members, the 'Viking experience' left me sadly disappointed. This disappointment is primarily due to Viking's dominance in the river cruise market (lots of riverboats) and their policy of 'rafting up' while at port to save on docking fees. Let me explain... Viking has over 60 riverboats cruising the rivers of the world primarily in the European market. At any one port you can expect 3 or more Viking riverboats to be docked on any given day. To save on docking fees Viking 'rafts up' (ties their boats side to side) up to three vessels deep. This results in about one foot of space between balconies, thus NO view and NO privacy for 50% or 100% (if you are the middle of three boats) of the cabins. If you are in port for a couple of days this can be very unpleasant. Utilization of the balcony and the view you paid a premium for are gone. This Viking 'experience' isn't much mentioned in the brochure or the photos of the lovely European cities (which you cannot see from your blocked cabin). The resulting 'Viking experience' is more like paying a premium for the lowest price inside cabin. Lights on 24/7 to see or just move about in your cabin. While rafting is not unique to Viking, due to the number of Viking vessels on the rivers and canals of the world (68 and growing, as I understand), you are way more liable to wind up in this unpleasant scenario with them than any other riverboat cruise line. It is for this reason that I would recommend that before booking your next riverboat cruise you should seriously consider any other cruise line than Viking. Read Less

The Danube has so much history and activities to offer! Extra stay in Budapest was amazing - the prettiest city I’ve seen at night (and that includes NYC, LA, DC, Chicago, Seattle, among others)The included excursions were great, and the extra excursions available were very well done also. Our cruise director (Wes) was fantastic and did a great job of advising us on things to do. He wasn’t afraid to tell us the excursions or things to do that he didn’t like as much, and made the entire experience so much fun. Food was incredible, with a wide selection of American and local foods. Staff onboard was exceptional. Awesome people we met on the cruise, and since there were less than 200 passengers, we got to know them better - and still in touch with several of them! We had heard nothing but positive reports from friends who have traveled with Viking and since it was my husbands first cruise ever, thought what Viking offered would be an ideal starter for him. It more than met our expectations from the moment we entered the ship. The attention to details from taking our luggage to our cabin, the dinning experience even offer us a lunch since we embarked a bit earlier than 3 p.m. Never felt "rushed" and yet everything was very prompt. The entire crew, was respectful, helpful, conversational but not intrusive. We enjoyed every shore excursion and those too were well planned with excellent guides. One could fill up their day as much as desired or utilize the included excursions and then have time to explore on ones own or just enjoy some relaxing time on deck. Even when we were cruising down the river during daylight hours, the Cruise Director provided information about what we were seeing and the history involved. The whole trip was very educational and for two history lovers we, thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. As a matter of fact, enjoyed it so much we've booked another cruise for this Fall. Read Less

The excursions are always top notch but sometimes a bit much for someone with disabilities. The entertainment was especially nice on this cruise, a duo that was very talented. Before I go any further, you must keep in mind that I am a smalltown senior citizen from New York state in the USA. This old gal had never been on a weeklong trip that required a passport. However, the beauty of my local surroundings and the Fingerlakes region of New York state places the bar pretty high. That being said and all things considered, this boat cruise vacation was a WOW. Embark in Budapest, Hungary; What a way to start my vacation. Immaculate accomodations, cozy cabin, and gracious crew members to make all guests welcome. We started right off with a delicious dinner shared with other vacationers. Everyone was friendly and seemed quite happy. Our first night cruise was spectacular. Everyone went to the upper deck to take photos of the magnificently lit historic buildings, bridges, and statues. The daily (optional) tours kept us as busy as we wanted. We skipped one tour because relaxing on board sounded good. Recharged by afternoon, we decided to tour the locale by bus and on foot. You guessed it, more photos. One of the extra tours we chose was a special Mozart Concert in Vienna. Thank you Viking Cruises for this special event. Another item I must share is regarding the Viking Magni staff. Everyone, and I mean every one of the staff members who we had occasion to meet was kind, good humored, respectful, and helpful in every way. I was delighted with the beautifully appointed restaurant and dining rooms. Nicely set table service, well groomed wait staff wearing perfect uniforms, with personalities and social skills that brought a smile to my face every day. Oh, let us not forget the Chefs. There was a bountiful supply of great food prepared just the way you want it (cooked and served with a smile). We loved the on shore excursions/tours. Words really cannot do them justice. The churches were breathtaking, the shops were quaint and very appealing, the countryside vast and beautiful. All were a must see. I really want to do it again (and again). Read Less

We wanted to experience the best in cruising which is why we chose Viking River Cruises. Our friends had recommended to us that cruising on a longboat was an unforgettable experience. Therefore, we selected the Danube River Cruise which was our first experience with Viking. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our cruise on the Viking Longboat MAGNI and would highly recommend Viking. The service provided was truly exceptional which began with the airport transfer to the hotel, the transfer to our longboat, and the transfer back to the airport. Once we boarded the boat, we were all were treated as if we were royalty. The food on the cruise was truly exceptional with a variety of selections offered. I especially enjoyed tasting the local flavors as we docked in various ports throughout Europe. The wine was complimentary with each meal and the deserts were wonderful. We found all the food service personnel from the waitresses, waiters, cooks, and food director truly exceptional providing exceptional customer service. Everyone wanted to make sure your dining experience was memorable. The Concierge, Program Director, Tour Director, and the Ship's Captain were also very cordial and customer service focused. My wife and I were prejudice; however, we felt our Program Tour Director was the best in the Viking fleet. He provided tons of information and historical references on our cruise as well as providing recommendations of places we should visit at each of our stops. During our stops we took advantage of the optional tour excursions. The local tour guides were exceptionally versed on their local history which increased the educational significance of the trip. For the Danube River Cruise, I would recommend travelers to begin in Passau Germany and end their cruise in Budapest Hungry as the night lights cruising into Budapest were unbelievable as we experienced on the sun deck. What a photographic opportunity. We made so many friends on our cruise which made it that much more enjoyable. We stay in contact with several families and are looking forward with traveling with them in the future with Viking. We were so impressed with the Danube Viking Cruise that we booked two more cruises with Viking: Paris and the Heart of Normandy Cruise in April 2019 and Majestic Fjords and Vibrant Cities in April 2020. The trip passes from Western Europe with its familiar culture, castles and vineyards on the Rhine, across the continental divide via a canal first envisioned by Charlemagne, then down the Danube through Central and Eastern Europe to the beginnings of Asia at Budapest. As an historic adventure I can think of nothing that surpasses it. The ship and its amenities are excellent. The included excursions are well managed and the guides are knowledgeable. They provide a view into each changing venue of the European mosaic as the ship passes from West to East. There is a small library aboard that provides information on the history and art and culture of each area as you proceed. The food is excellent and the wines are as well. They change with the regions so one can experience both the dishes and wines of each place. The crew is pleasant and helpful; the relatively small number of guests turns the trip into something like a family excursion. I recommend this trip without reservation. Take some time in Budapest at the end. The city is well worth seeing. Do it on your own; I recommend the Hotel Corinthia. Read Less

Pre and Post stays made a great transition to and from the river cruise. Everything about the Grand European River Cruise was excellent. -The Captain was up early working with his crew. -All staff were very professional and had excellent customer service attitudes. Aleksandra the suite attendant was great, dining staff were great, Gary Nicholson the Cruise Director was a hoot and kept us laughing, entertained and organized on our excursions. -The ship was open, extremely clean and limited to about 180 guests which was fantastic compared to other company ocean cruising which is overcrowded. -We did in 15 days what would probably take us months to do on our own, getting a taste of a wide variety cities, towns, history and culture. -The food was wonderful, great, excellent. My husband was pleased with the variety of offerings. Coffee, Tea and snacks were always available. -The ship was very accommodating with dining for shore excursions that ran throughout the day. We cant really identify one or two excellent points on this trip, because everything was top notch. -Not to mention the beauty of the river with its castles, towns, cathedrals and peoples which made this a trip of a lifetime for us. Viking became our go to vacation group for us, just from this one trip. Read Less
