We knew people who had gone on the same trip. We were considering a Viking river trip and this one was what we wanted. We were able to see the Ann Frank house in Amsterdam, which is something we had really wanted to do. We were glad to have that extra time at the beginning of our trip to explore Amsterdam a bit before embarking on our cruise. The ship, Saadi, was great. Our cabin, while not big, was comfortable and clean, and the maid who took care of our room did an excellent job every day! The food on board was wonderful— never any reason to be hungry! It seemed that all the waiters/waitresses would do anything to accommodate us. We were pleased that there was evening entertainment provided and we especially enjoyed the trivia contests! And the ports and shore excursions were all well planned. Our tour director, Stein, was great— he was very organized and kept everything, including all of us, on time. We enjoyed all of the ports and shore excursions, especially Salzburg (Sound of Music) and Vienna. We hadn’t read the optional tour description carefully enough and were surprised when we had a Viennese waltz lesson included in our tour! Even with the low water levels, having to change ships, and not having a full day in Budapest, we really enjoyed everything about the trip. We definitely would go on another Viking river trip. Ours was one of many river cruises affected by low water levels on more than one river, but we'd live in Germany during a drought year back in the 70s so weren't concerned. Leaving Amsterdam a day later than originally scheduled gave us another day on our own (Heavy rain would have made tulips + windmills most unpleasant.) and we had one well-organized and well-predicted ship-swap. The logistics of the ship swap were impressive: moving two boat-loads of guests by luxury coaches, moving luggage by truck, cleaning, rescheduling meals & shore excursions. Local guides (required by law) extremely knowledgeable -- don't be afraid to book your day full. Because we had a 2nd primary Viking staffer, tours eventually split into two groups to accommodate those less mobile (bus access to central town areas limited by ordinances & cobblestones = cobblestones) -- to everyone's benefit. Notes in no particular order: 1. Vienna moorage within walking distance of the Prater park & the giant ferris wheel -- the Wiener Riesenrad -- from The Third Man movie. 2. Cologne: Schokoladen museum 3. Passau: St. Stephan's organ concert but wish we would have had time to purchase a CD from the gift shop -- get into the church as early as possible for best seating 4. Wachau valley winery tour -- source of many Viking's wines 5. Historical Bavarian village -- added mid-trip 6. Bratislava by night -- extra evening attraction Crew very willing to answer technical questions -- we're boaters ourselves -- staff diplomatically dealt w/passenger not interesting in enjoying the cruise other than ruining everyone else's day. Things not explained: 1. If you're not in a dining room by "door closure," you don't get dinner. 2. Purser's office doesn't like to change paper money into coins for tips; they suggest using ATMs which don't give coinage. Serious problem: wasps (yellow jackets) everywhere on shore & on the boat, esp any place where food/drink (They love beer!) served. We suggested wasp traps after I'd gotten stung on a shore excursion; didn't dare a second sting since the boat doesn't carry an Epi-pen (My doctor said I shouldn't need one if stings infrequent.) Post-cruise comments directly to Viking, including compliments, met with cliches. We'd booked directly through Viking, not a 3rd party, and eventually learned that other depts (air travel!) would make up answers rather than admit lack of knowledge. Viking's low-water advance-alert email offered a 50% credit vs future cruise, so we'll be on an ocean cruise this fall while considering additional Viking cruises -- including maybe this one from the other direction. I chose this cruise because of its itinerary. From Budapest to Amsterdam along the Danube, Mein and Rhine rivers was a truly incredible journey. So much history and art. The acommodations were like a 5 star hotel and the food was excellent. The program director was tailor made for the job. He was a treat. Looking forward to my next cruise with Viking! The excursions that Viking has lined up at each destination are incredible. The hard part is deciding on which ones. Be sure to take as many as you can because they are worth it and will truly enhance your trip. I couldn't say more about the crew. The service they provide was outstanding. They were always there ready to take care of whatever you needs might be. The cabin was very accommodating and the bed very comfortable which was needed after a long day of walking around. And the evening entertainment was excellent. The pianist and his accompanying singer were very nice to listen to in the evening as you were winding down from all the days activities. Read Less

This cruise was highly recommended by our trusted AMA travel agent. My husband and I were not disappointed! From the moment our plane landed in Amsterdam we were treated to Viking’s amazing hospitality and friendly professionalism. The ship’s design was beautiful and exceptionally clean. Stunning river views were maximized throughout. We booked one of the two Explorer Suites which provided beautiful living space in addition to wrap around views. Dining on the Skadi was a delight. In addition to classic dining menu items, each evening featured regional cuisine selections which never disappointed. The dining room staff excelled in service as well as cuisine knowledge; this team went above and beyond to ensure a very pleasant dining experience. Guests were treated to beautiful music and songs by a marvellously talented duo; dancing the evening away while sailing to our next adventure was delightful. Our cruise director, Stein, was fantastic. He was a wealth of information on history, points of interest and culture of the regions we would be visiting. His sense of humour and boundless energy ensured an enhanced experience for all. We participated in each included port excursion as well as many of the optional ones. All were exceptional. We also added extended stays in Prague prior to sailing as well as in Amsterdam prior to returning home. We highly recommend doing any and all that a traveler’s time and budget allows- no regrets Read Less

I thought it would be an easier way to see so much of Germany and Austria than to haul my suitcase across the countries. The cabin was comfortable, My favorite part of the ship was the lounge. It was a great place to relax with a drink or a cup of tea. I really liked being able to get a specialty coffee for free whenever I wanted and the cookies were nice in the afternoon after running around exploring all day. The meals were great. Our wait staff was so much fun and so attentive and so very sincerely nice. So many choices. I loved Austria night. The musicians they had on board were so much fun. I loved the talks given about the countries and the history. Very informative. The excursions were a great way to get oriented in the places we traveled. The guides were so knowledgeable and answered my million questions as I am a history buff and wanted to learn about the areas we were in. Not only would I do it again. I am. We can't wait to do another one! Thoroughly enjoyed all of the included group tours and added on a few extras whuch were also enjoyable. lots and lots of walking tours included and we added on a few extra tours whuch we also enjoyed. The other guests on our ship were fun to get to know...mostly Americans but some Aussies and Brits so it was fun mix of people and we enkjoyed pretty much everything about the cruise. The staff was absolutely fantastic..our cruise director was amazing..not only very knowledgeable but also very entertaining as well as helppful and patient. The food was fantastic and we were thankful for the walking tours to burn off some of the delicious extra calories we enjoyed daily courtesy of Chef Alex and his incredible crew! The housekeeping staff members were terrific..our rooms were serviced several times a day but we were never disturbed by a knock on the door so I have no idea how they knew when we in the room or out and about. We have already booked another Viking cruise this Spring and are looking forward to joining some friends on another cruise next year! The very best part was that we never once had rough water so between that and the flat bottomed ship getting queasy in rough water was never an issue! Read Less

Friends had taken this cruise a couple years ago and recommended it. We were interested in all the countries and ports in the Grand European Adventure. We spent 2 days exploring Amsterdam prior to the cruise and I would highly recommend it. Viking did everything they could to make the experience enjoyable. Stein, our Program Director, stated on the first day that they strive to Beat your expectations..not Meet them. It showed in everything they did. We were met outside the ship at embarkation by the program director and hotel director who personally carried in our luggage and helped us get checked in. Pros: -Daily Excursions were great. Provided an overview of villages/cities as well as tours of the major attraction (castle/Cathedral). Set the stage for exploring on our own when time was provided. -Morwald Winery Tour - Amazing! Trinka, our guide was delightful, the winery and wine was fabulous. -Ship - perfect size. Loved that we were never 'sold' anything. There are no shops, etc on board. You simply enjoy your time on ship. The longships glide through the water and it is much more relaxing than I expected -Food - absolutely delicious. Very unexpected. Regional specialties every night. I have a food allergy, and Ivan, the Maitre d met with me every morning to go over the menu and guide me through what my choices were. They even offered to cook special items for me. -Wait staff - Very attentive, entertaining, They made each meal special. -Wine/Beer included with meals was a nice addition. Wine served was very good, and regional. -The lounge entertainment was really good. A husband/wife team who provided musical entertainment each day. During cocktail hour, they were nice background music and we could still enjoy conversations with our friends and not compete with them. The musicians they brought on board for our Austrian night were so fun and entertaining. -The nighttime tour of Budapest the last night was absolutely PERFECT. We got to see all of the city lights of the castle, parliament and everything. Such a perfect ending to a perfect cruise. Cons: -Our room. Although the room was more than adequate, we had a bottom level room with port hole. It was incredibly noisy. Woke us up many times in the night. Read Less

We chose the cruise for our 50th anniversary because of recommendations from friends. Everything ran so smoothly from the wonderful dining to the cabin care to the excursions. The crew went above and beyond to make the trip wonderful. We met several couples the first day who we enjoyed sitting with each evening. The Lounge was a wonderful gathering place. We would go there each evening before dinner to hear a review of the next day's activities. Also in the lounge we listened to presenters on the economics of Germany, enjoyed different food tastings, watched glass blowing and listened to special musical groups brought on board to entertain us. There was always a talented duo who entertained in the lounge after dinner. The bus and walking tours were lead by upbeat knowledgeable guides. It was easy to hear the presentations. Because of the locks and bridges, we didn't get to sit on the top deck very often, but we could sit in the lounge and watch out the floor to ceiling windows. We have already booked a Viking cruise to Russia for next year. Read Less

We wanted to see the tulips and Amsterdam and many people recommended Viking. The dining on the Cruise was outstanding. The food was healthy. The portions were the perfect size. There were sufficient choices and every day there were basic choices and more gourmet items, if desired. We met lovely people on the Cruise, mostly in the dining room. I would have liked the option of sugar free desserts, but the dessert choices were not too sweet. I loved the passion fruit served at breakfast. The breakfasts were really great, as wee all the other meals. The Cruise Director did a fabulous job. He was charming, funny, patient and professional. Everyone seemed to appreciate him and his efforts. My favorite Shore Excursion was when we got to spend time at the home of a local family and share coffee and dessert with them. Overall, this was my favorite Cruise and Cruise Line. Read Less

I did this cruise as a mother and daughter cruise for mom's 80th birthday. The ship experience was great for her. She could relax on board when she was tired and go off the ship when she had the energy. She made good use of the walking track on the sundeck for safe walking exercise (especially when the weather was cold and rainy). We really enjoyed the food on board - lots of options on and even off menu (the passion fruit and boiled eggs were a bit hit). We especially enjoyed having lunch (lots of variety from which to choose) on the aquavit terrace. I wandered off on some excursions without her and felt very safe leaving her on the ship. The crew was amazing with her. They got to know her preferences and treated her very well. I've traveled Viking before and will continue to do so. You guys do an amazing job all around. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we loved it. We have been on a couple ocean cruises previously but we liked the river cruise much better. The personal attention we received was great and the much smaller passenger number made things much more enjoyable. The activities and excursions were well planned and organized. Our cabin was just the right size, clean and well maintained. Our dining experience was excellent with always having delicious choices from the menus. The staff was very personable and helpful, we enjoyed conversing with them. Although the entertainment was not on the scale of a cruise ship it was quite adequate and enjoyable. The optional excursions, which we took advantage of, were excellent. The excursion group sizes were kept small enough that everyone was able to move about without crowding into confined spaces. The wireless audio devices we each had made it very easy to hear what our guides to say. We liked our cruise so much that we signed up for the Paris to Zurich Cruise that will be in March. Read Less

A bucket list cruise. Plus we love Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Crew and staff were A+ in every area. Room was very clean and had everything we needed. The large TV had information about our course and the next days stop. The TV system crashed a few times but was repaired quickly. Food was great and the servers were very attentive to our needs. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Bring extra cash to tip all the servers and the staff. They deserve it! Also, tip the bus drivers. The Viking web site had guidelines on how much to tip. The tours were good, but we didn't expect to walk so much and so fast. We older guests sometimes had trouble keeping up with the tour speed. The sound system that Viking uses helped a lot.Radio receivers with ear buds were used to keep us linked with the tour guides when the tour group got so stretched out that we lost sight of the group leader. There are free tours at every stop and also tours that cost extra. Sometimes they overlap and you must choose one or the other. Bring good shoes for walking. Read Less

Easy to find the ship at various towns. Everything close to ship. Individual tour guides at each town did an excellent job describing the city and all we should see. Budapest was a wonderful city we were disappointed that we didn't come a few days sooner. Because of the length of time we spent traveling, when we got to ship we were beyond exhausted and after dinner went to bed. Enjoyed the wine and beer served at dinner. All the meals were excellent Wished we had more time in Vienna. So much to see in this great city. Wouldn't mind taking this river cruise again. It was very interesting and would see more things if we did it again. We would definitely recommend getting to Budapest a day or two before river cruise. Hanging out in the lounge with new friends at the end of the day, along with cocktails, was. Such a pleasure. I enjoyed seeing the many castles, cathedrals, churches, historical monuments. Beyond anyone’s control was the cold, wet weather. I was not well prepared for this combination. I would have remained in town for longer times to enjoy the restaurants and sites. We started with a few extra days in Prague which is well worth visiting with so many sights, food and interesting shopping venues. We then headed to our embarkation point of Budapest where after dinner the enchantment of this cruise began with a cruise up and down the Danube River through the lit up city. It was a thrill to think that this was only the beginning. The Skadi was a wonderful ship with superb dining, fantastic crew, and outstanding service. There are superior food choices, wine with meals, gourmet deserts, and many of the meals include locally obtained produce. It is far too easy to find you have added a few extra pounds by trips end. Our cabin was on the lower level which gave us a very interesting viewpoint of the river, the shoreline and even ducks swimming by our large window. Our cabin was ample, comfortable and especially quiet. Ship noises and cabin neighbors were never even heard which was very representative of how well these ships are designed and built. Our Cruise Director and Hotel Manager could not have been better. They both made sure that they were there to answer any questions, provide services, and socialize with guests. It was very evident how much the crew likes what they do and who they work for when you see them working as a team. We were taking on supplies at one port and I witnessed them individually carrying supplies to the storerooms, not some but everyone, the hotel staff, the wait staff, the engineering staff and even the Hotel Manager, Frank, himself and the Captain. I have spent years around ships and I have never seen the Captain loading stores and provisions as part of the ship's team until this trip. The Captain told me that it is just part of the Viking package that everything works out the best for their passengers. The Shore excursions in every port are a valuable way of making sure everyone has a wonderful inclusive trip experience. Even the extra trips a good value as well as educational and fun. The entertainment provided was unique and appropriate for the local area and provided in an intimate lounge atmosphere. We were able to meet many wonderful shipmates and have continued to keep in touch and are hoping to maybe see them on a future cruise. We are already planning to travel with Viking again as soon as our schedule will permit. The problem may be how to choose between so many great destinations. Too many places, too little time. Thanks to our Captain and Crew, our Cruise Director and Hotel Manager, our cabin stewardess (who kept us clean and healthy) and our waiter (whose recommendations were right on every time and who kept our palates satiated and wine glass full), we had a trip full of memories. We chose to go on our trip several days early, to both enjoy the Amsterdam area and get acclimated to the time change before starting our river cruise. We were picked up at the airport and taken to our nice hotel, where we spent time with Viking hosts to better plan our time there. They were extremely helpful, we were able to see many key spots in and around the city, and the local transportation was easy to use. We signed up for several tours while there which we enjoyed; Amsterdam is a beautiful city and we would highly recommend spending time there. We easily found our ship "Skadia" near our hotel and we were pleased to see the hotel staff had transferred our luggage to our ship's room by the time we checked in that afternoon. We had several hours to relax and unpack before our informative welcome meeting and first dinner, which was helpful to my wife who had never been on a cruise before. This river cruise with Viking was just excellent and better than advertised in many ways. The trip itinerary was well planned out, the additional shore excursion options were a good value in both time and money spent, the entire crew was professional, friendly and caring. The cabins had everything that we needed and the entire ship was always clean. We enjoyed the daily special touches that Viking added, like special treats after some daily excursions. The cruise director and her guides/drivers did an excellent job with the shore excursions and gave plenty of information to us so that we could get the most out of what we would see each day. We especially liked the narratives on several days cruising through scenic Unesco areas. The hotel manager and especially our cabin staff did a wonderful job taking care of us in a respectful and helpful way. The chef and his crew had interesting menu choices along the trip and helped my wife with her special dietary requirements. The food was very good, the desserts were special, and the friendly and efficient wait staff called us by name by the second day, impressive! We enjoyed sitting at different tables during the day meeting new people as well. The Captain and ship crew provided us with a safe and smooth experience. It was a great way to travel across Europe combining certain sights we would not have seen otherwise, meeting interesting people from across the globe, learning historical facts and visiting spectacular museums, and not having to plan each day's activities. We enjoyed all aspects of the trip and look forward to doing it again in another part of the world. Read Less

Just loved River Cruise. The sights on deck, the dining experience no preferred seating, the extremely helpful staff, the outings at each port, so well organized and finally the cleanliness everywhere on board’ and the very comfortable cabins. I do however suggest you do not take the outing at the baths in Budapest, they were not what we were expecting’ felt like just a big pool we have at home, other guests also felt the same way as they did not take us to the advertised place. Each port we visited we were greeted by tour guides who were well versed and were quite enjoyable. I would recommend River cruising to anyone who wants a relaxing trip and letting someone else do the planning. Sometimes it’s just fun to be so well served. We also enjoyed the casual feel of this particular cruise, you don’t need to get all dressed up if you wish to be casual or dressed up is also fine. If we were to start over would have booked a few extra nights in Amsterdam to visit since there was no time there at all, off the ship and straight to the airport for return flight. Can.t wait for our next trip. Mmm wonder where, Happy sailings Read Less

The meals were excellent and we loved the fact that we did not HAVE to change into fancy clothes for dinner unless we wished to do so. The side excursions were all excellent and the extra trips we took were well worth our time and a little extra cost. The size of the ship and the number of guests was what really made the difference for us when deciding to try a river cruise. We would do it again in a heartbeat. We took a cruise 2 years ago out of Venice on the Adriatic We loved what we saw and enjoyed family, but a cruise with under 200 people as the Viking River Cruise is wins hands down. My late brother suggested that we do one more cruise together after last year's incredible Viking Budapest to Amsterdam trip in June of 2016. He felt life was short and ergo we need to do at least one more extraordinary trip together. He passed away suddenly October 13, 2016. We went with him in our loving memory as his wife encouraged us to do. He was right! This was yet another exceptional experience; one that will stay with us for ever! The dining experience was phenomenal with my husband's Chateau Briand Steak the best he has ever had. The serving portions were utter perfection with the selections for every meal outstanding! The wines poured were wonderful. The services was 5 star to say the least! The hotel Steigenberger in Berlin was fantastic with great location and fabulous dining. The Berlin excursions were good. The only negative comment is The Taste of Berlin was not at all what was described as we were not taken to or treated to any of the items promised save for one wurst. Viking did step up afterwards and offered either a refund of $198 or a $400 voucher for another trip. We took the voucher as we know Viking is the best was to travel. We hope to try an ocean cruise next! The Corinthia Hotel in Prague was wonderful but the location was less than desirable as it was far away from the main square. The breakfast provided was superior! The Radisson Blu Hotel in Krakow was the best for location and accommodations, with breakfast being just OK. The Sofitel in Warsaw was beautiful, great location, great breakfast but with horrible beds and service was just fair. We should have had one more day in Warsaw as we had much more to see. All of the tours were above and beyond our expectations as were the concert/folk evenings. The guides after Berlin were brilliant and very warm, and caring! They added so much to our trip which really made this not a vacation per se but a luxury education! We LOVE Viking! And please if booking the Elegant Elbe trip be sure to add on the Prague, Krakow & Warsaw add on if at all possible. To go that far and not have that experience with these guides and so much WWII history would be a huge mistake! Read Less

We are not cruisers, per se, but the itinerary, the size of the ship and Viking's reputation spurred us to give it a shot. We've been on many guided tours around the world and rank Viking's Grand European Cruise as one of our best overseas vacations. The on-board staff were wonderfully helpful, professional and knew their stuff. We missed a connection because of bad weather--we went one way, our luggage another. They bent over backwards to ensure that our bags arrived before we set sail. We were impressed with most of the local guides, too. Excellent choices as far as the ports and shore excursions went. The entire tour was a history lesson of the most enlightening and entertaining nature. The options that we selected were most enjoyable and/or informative. Well worth the price. The ship was spotless, the service impeccable. A great crew! Did not rate Fitness and Recreation because we were too busy sopping up the culture and enrichment activities. The proof is in the pudding: we intend to do another Viking River Cruise in 2019. Read Less

Heard from others that they truly enjoyed this trip, so decided to try it. Was not disappointed at all. Days flew by quickly because we were so busy in a nice casual way. Up early for breakfast and then off to a tour each day. Some days were full tour days with some walk around and some on our own to wander. We had time to play cards with old friends and enjoyed meeting new ones. Freedom to enjoy the sundeck for most of the trip was great with one morning a guided tour on deck of both sides of the river. This was one of the highlights. Evening starting with a nice dinner with new and old friends and ended in the lounge. Some nights dancing to the lovely music and some nights playing team games or listening to guest musicians or a presentation of glass blowing or some educational theme. The staff were wonderful but have to highlight our cruise director. He was above excellent. He was well versed in every aspect of this adventure. There were no questions he could not answer and he took care of everyone's special issues. There was one time, someone was too long on a tour and missed their bus back to the ship. The lady could not walk with others who choose to walk back to the ship. The cruise director just called a cab for her and away she went. Another time a woman fell and broke her foot on the steps. One of the staff accompanied her to the hospital, acting as her interpreter and also being ready to pay for the bill, in case the injured person's insurance wouldn't cover it. All in all, with the diversity being offered, time was well spent in enjoyment, learning and meeting some wonderful people. I'd highly recommend Viking for their care of each individual person on board and of course what they offer. Read Less

Having gone to a family wedding in Vienna this summer, and having to plan all transportation, meals, entertainment etc. ourselves, it gave me a greater appreciation of all that is provided by Viking during the "Grand European Tour". All a person needs to do on a Viking Cruise is enjoy. Viking has done all the hard work! I have recommended Viking to everyone who has asked how my river cruise was. If I could I would an annual trip aboard a Viking Cruise ship. What a fun way to travel! Read Less

This was our second river cruise with Viking and we liked the ease of being on the boat for 14 days with minimal packing and unpacking and cruising all of the rivers. So relaxing. While all the cities, sites, tours were incredible we liked being on the river seeing the world at 11mph the best. This was the "Easy Button" of all vacations that we have taken - it is no surprise this is the most favorite cruise they have. We all appreciated the educational, musical, and fun events in the evening. The history of the river was very interesting and educational. I dont know how the Viking staff could have done a better job of taking care of us - they seemed to be able to read our mind at times and when things didnt go as planned they changed the plans. We were on a day tour of Strassburg and on the way back to the meeting point we were informed the boat would be late due to getting through the locks so we all just met at a local bar and had drinks and mingled with the locals - a wonderful time was had by all. Would like to do the trip again except this time I would like to start in Amersterdam and go to Budapest and spend a couple of days in Amersterdam prior to getting onto the ship. Read Less

We had previously been on the Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basil. Thoroughly enjoyed it and decided to take a longer cruise this time. Viking lives up to its advertising. The ship is spotless, Staff cannot do enough for you. I have been on "big" cruise boats and will never go back. Viking is our choice. We plan to make a Viking Ocean cruise December of 2018. This time Australia to New Zeland. The limited number of people makes for a much better experience. The river boats have a max of 190 guests and the ocean 998. this is manageable. The barman even knew what I liked to drink on the second night. Great service. The side trips vary. Some are free and some you need pay extra for. The side trips we paid for were worth every penny. Viking uses a microphone for its' guides, you have an earphone and always hear every word of the guide's presentation even at a distance. No having to get to the head of the group to hear what is going on. Read Less

TV advertisements looked wonderful so we decided to go. The lectures and historical tours taught us much. The guides were first rate. We had no negative experiences. The food was delicious, gourmet but not pretentious. The crew was very friendly and genuinely wished us to have a good time. One of the best things was sitting with other passengers at meals and during the delightful entertainment evenings and getting to know about them. We are American and chatted with Canadians and Australians. So as a bonus we learned about farming life in Canada and about how things are in Australia. We enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to dress up for meals or the evening, just nicer clothes than we had worn on our daily tours. Also the fact that the cruise included tours at each stop made our planning easy and there were no surprise extras that we had to pay for. Read Less
