We did the Grand European Cruise and had a fantastic time. Ports of call were both interesting and entertaining. Beautiful sights along the Rhine and Danube. Excellent excursions and plenty of free time to shop and explore. On board staff were excellent. Captain and crew kept things moving even with water level issues with locks. Adjustments were made on the fly and any delays were handled easily. The food was excellent and plentiful. Although lacking the massive buffets found on ocean cruises, the selection was more than enough for anyone, as were the dining options. We have already booked the Passage to Eastern Europe for this year to continue teh voyage down the Danube to Bucarest. Highly recommended to anyone. This is not just a cruise for seniors or the wealthy. We found the cost to be well worth the experience and service provided. A great value for any vacation. Read Less

We sailed on the Viking Skadi (The Grand European Tour) from August 20 - September 3. This was our second cruise with Viking and it did not disappoint. We flew into Amsterdam 3 days early so we could explore Amsterdam prior to our departure on the Skadi - I would recommend this because the river cruise departs the afternoon that you board. Our cabin was a decent size (we had a French balcony cabin class) and the bed was comfy. Bathroom supplies were refreshed liberally. (We joked that every time we touched a towel someone replaced it !). There was always lots of food available on board and it was universally excellent. The staff were superior - after a couple of days they knew what everyone normally ordered and often appeared with it before we even asked. There was a nice of mix of people on our boat - mostly 55+ I would say but several couples in their 40's as well. We had some type of "included" tour at every stop and most stops had free time and/or optional things to do. Viking uses a "quietvox" system where each person has a box with earbuds and the person leading the tour speaks into a microphone that is heard by each person. This is really nice and you don't have to worry about trying to hear what the leader is saying all the time. We did experience a tiny bit of "on the fly changes" due to changing water levels between Nuremberg and Passau but we did not have to change ships as I have read some others had to do. Water levels are something that no cruise line has any control over and everyone on our ship "went with the flow". It was disappointing that not all of our stops were actually right in the town and required shuttle buses into town. Again, this is not anything that the cruise line really has any control over. This was a wonderful vacation and we would definitely sail with Viking again. Read Less

We took the Grand European cruise because it was on sale, we wanted to take a last minute trip, and we had never done a river cruise. In February we had travelled through Australia on our own ,so we're looking forward to having someone else worry about the logistics. From the first day aboard, we were delighted. The service in our room and at the restaurant were wonderful. Each time we returned to our room, it had been refreshed. We always ate lunch and dinner in the same area so had the same two waiters. They were great. One afternoon, I asked for dome chocolate ice cream which wasn't on the menu. Our waiter brought vanilla with chocolate sauce. I thanked him, but told him I would skip dessert and maybe someone else would like this. About five minutes later he returned with chocolate ice cream which he had found in the neighboring sister ship. SERVICE!!! All but one of our included tours was excellent. The individual transmitters allowed us to hear all that our local guides had to share. Nothing was too strenuous. The daily briefings and the suggestions of our concierge were a big help, as were the daily news sheets. We had such a wonderful time that we've booked the Russian cruise for next year. Read Less

My husband and I sailed on the Viking Skadi Longship from 24 June to 9 July, 2016. Here are major observations and comments: - It was the BEST TRIP we have ever taken in our lives! - The Viking longship, Skadi, was spotless and the crew took meticulous care to keep the entire ship clean and shining. On two separate occasions, I saw room attendants literally cleaning the grout of the shower with toothbrushes. They visited us 3 times a day to prepare our room for the day or evening. Their housekeeping staff is exceptional. - Everything was superbly organized from start to finish. We were given clear instructions on each stop's disembarkation and embarkation procedures. - Our local tour guides in all the cities were just great. With English as a second language, they were easy to understand and the use of the QuietVoxes allowed you to hear and not have to strain to listen. - The Veranda Stateroom we had, had more than ample room with a hanging closet and several drawers in a dresser like cabinet. Bedside tables could hold magazines, books, etc.The bed was comfy with high quality duvet, bedding and pillows. Lots of space on which to place toiletries, makeup, etc. It came furnished with a hairdryer and high quality shampoos, conditioners, body lotion and body wash. It also had a safe for storage of extra money, passports, etc. The bathroom had a wonderful shower and overall provided the needed room to prepare in the morning without wasting space. -The FOOD!!! Oh my gosh, I could write pages about this aspect alone. We ate primarily in the dining room for breakfast and dinner. Sometimes we would visit the Aquavit Terrace where they had a light meal buffet going during the same meal hours. The choices we had in the dining room always included a meat and/or fish and vegetarian dishes. We found the meals to be well prepared in terms of flavor, 'doneness" and portion size. If for any reason you wanted more of something, they were happy to provide it. Our wait staff was not only incredibly knowledgeable about the menu/food choices, but happy to try to accommodate alterations. Both wine and beer was provided at no extra charge and some of the wine was from local sources along the river. Dress on the cruise -- i brought a couple of fancy tops to wear at dinner with slacks or skirts I wore during the day and felt completely comfortable. There was no formality to this cruise unless you wanted to dress up which was perfectly fine. During the day, wear comfortable clothes and most importantly, shoes. You will be walking a fair amount on most of the tours and many times on cobblestones in the older sections of towns. Anything that gives your feet good support and base to walk on should be fine. Mix and match as much as you can to make good use of your packing space. No one pays attention to what you wear every day so wear things multiple times just like you might at home. On board laundry services are available but we never felt we needed them. - Viking Staff --- I cannot emphasize this enough. The Viking Staff were outstanding and truly exceptional at taking care of you. Our program director, Gary, was friendly, knowledgeable and was very precise in giving you instructions each day about boarding tour buses, getting back to the ship, etc. That and he was also just hilarious. Our cabin attendant was friendly, unobtrusive and a hard worker. She kept our room sparkling every day no matter how messy we were. Our wait staff...well, we fell in love with them. Courteous, fun, efficient, and their eyes were constantly on what they could do to make our dining experience even better. Reception and concierge staff -- Friendly, accommodating and available to help you with any unforeseen circumstance. Chef and Staff -- Executed and delivered every dish to perfection. On the 4th of July, the Pastry Chef even made a special USA Flag cake for us to celebrate our holiday with at dinner. Entertainment - We didn't participate in a lot of the on-board entertainment as we were usually interested in just sitting outside on top of the boat when possible and having a drink. However, we did enjoy some local German opera singers that came on board to sing, watched a very interesting glass blowing demonstration, learned how to make apple strudel (perhaps enough to feed 150 people), and listened to one of the most fascinating lectures on the history of Austria. You can participate as much or as little as you choose. No one judges! Shore Excursions - There were several people that had visited some of the ports before so they opted for additional excursions. We stuck to the ones included in the price of the trip and were not disappointed. In each port, we got to see significant places of interest, whether it was a castle, a cathedral, a quaint historic district, or a historic place like Hitler's Rally grounds in Nuremberg. Some were definitely more interesting than others, but all were done incredibly well. The visit to the Windmills at Kinderdijk was fascinating. If you've made it this far in the review you can tell our experience was fantastic. The one area I haven't mentioned is the opportunity to meet some incredible fellow travelers. After about a week, we found ourselves being a part of a core group of 10 of us. We would have dinner together or tour together or just generally hang out on the boat together. These friendships have continued since we've been home even though we are spread out all over the U.S. We have even talked about trying to plan a trip together again. How better can you speak to an experience than to feel you have made unexpected friendships forced by the bond of a truly remarkable experience of traveling together on a Viking River Boat Cruise. We have been to Europe several times but this cruise took us to places we had not been before. Viking Cruises and this particular cruise had been recommended to us by friends on two separate occasions. The food was excellent and the dining room staff was always very pleasant, friendly, eager to serve and sometimes even entertaining. We couldn't ask for a more pleasurable dining experience! The excursions were well organized & well thought out. The attention paid to detail was appreciated (umbrellas, bottled water). The 'quiet boxes' are a wonderful idea - and they always worked!! The one comment I could make concerning the excursions is the fact that a 'leisure group' was always offered for each excursion. Having this information at the time of booking would have been most helpful as we could have made more informed choices. During the day the lounge and front deck were cool, quiet areas to go with a book or a visit with a friend. The whole cruise was very well organized. There was never any reason on our part to feel confused or uncertain. The transfers to and from the airports (Budapest & Amsterdam) were smooth & efficient. The staff at the front desk dealt with requests & inquiries calmly & efficiently. The pre-dinner updates were very helpful and the evening entertainment was a fun ending to the day. Read Less

It was by far the most enjoyable and relaxing tour we have ever been on. Being on a ship with only 170 passengers was probably what made it special. The tour director, Gary was unbelievable. He was with us from when we embarked, he was with us on the tours, he briefed us every evening, he entertained us at night and he made what could have been a huge problem seem like a drop in the bucket. The highlight of the cruise was the three hours in the afternoon sailing slowly down the Rhine. With many castles on each side of the river, Gary explained what we were seeing and what was coming next. The included tours were very entertaining and kept us very busy. The food and service was terrific, as expected. It was nice not to have to sit at assigned seating, as we were able to meet so many more people. It was also nice not to have a dress-up night, as it meant easier packing for fifteen days. Read Less

This was a great overall cruise. It provided a variety of European cities and waterways all in a single trip. I had never been to Budapest, nurenburg, Augustberg, Cologne, Amsterdam and many of the otehr destinations. I truly enjoyed the staff and boat. Boat is clean and new and staff is very pleasant and willing to help. I had taken another Viking trip to South France - Nice to Lyon with family and enjoyed it as well. They hae taken an number and it was my first. Loved Nice, Chateau Nuf du Pape, Lyon and all of the Roman ruins along the way. Favorable weather and great service on that one too. Suprisingly I met a number of people from my home town in Southern California and a number more who were plesant and good company. Bring a single, it sometimes was awkward which is the only thing that I have that did not go as well as I had hoped. On the other hand, I was not open to meeting any new women, other than as casual dinner companionship dut to recently meeting a woman that I was quite smitten with. We are now an item so you can expect a twosome next time. Is this a useful review? Date of trip is from memory, as I do not have the exact dates with me. Read Less

The dining experience provided us with a wonderful variety of excellent food and wonderful service. We liked the idea complementary wine or beer with lunch and dinner. Each port and shore excursion gave us a sample of the city's history and famous castles or cathedrals. Viking also offered optional tours, we took advantage of 3 different tours. The tours were very well planned and transportation was on clean, air conditioned buses. Cruising along the rivers was relaxing and the sites on the shore were breathtaking. Vineyards and castles dotted the shoreline. Embarkation and disembarkation went very quickly, with all needed information provided. We also appreciated the provided transfers to and from the airports, this helped to make sure we had a very enjoyable trip. Read Less

This was our first experience as river cruisers and we would rate it 10 out of 10. We travelled with two other couples, all of us of varying ages. The included excursions are suitable for almost all levels of fitness and mobility. We were very impressed with the tour buses and operators, extremely clean and knowledgeable guides. The city guides in all cases were exemplary. We initially thought the cabin was small but it was very nicely appointed. We did find we spent very little time in the cabin as there is so much public space on board with lots of seating for groups large and small (2). The food was beyond excellent with a variety of meals offered in two different venues. The dining room was always our choice for dinner and the staff was top notch. Lunch was at times in the dining room and otherwise in the lounge upstairs, buffet style. We are definitely going on a river cruise with Viking in the future, hoping for China Sept 2017. Our best advice is GO, it is a great way to travel and Viking took care of everything including air transport and pick up and delivery to and from airports. Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise because we wanted quality, education, and a peaceful cruise. We are seniors so we felt at home in the mostly group of seniors. We've raised our children and appreciated the peace and quiet of a childless cruise. We especially enjoyed the educational experiences offer both in the shore excursions and the educators hired to come onboard to make their presentations about the economy, culture and politics of the areas we visited. The crew was outstanding and we wonder if they are always this good or if we lucked out. We especially liked the Program Director and the humor he brought to the trip. We only had two minor complaints: (1) We struggled to get our cabin's temperature adjusted to be comfortable at night. Our choice for bedding was a heavy comforter or a sheet so a light blanket would have been welcomed. (2) Each included shore excursion seemed to consist of a tour of a cathedral and palace so they all began to run together. Maybe some ports have some other kinds of interests. But, like I said, those are very minor complaints. The food was top-notch with a good assortment of choices. We are not picky eaters and enjoyed the fancy dishes as well as the hamburgers. Would we go with Viking again? You betcha! We hope they will eventually have a Mississippi river cruise. Read Less

We wanted to see the tulips and we had to meet our friends and this cruise fit into our schedule. Unfortunately, I got sick the third day and missed a tour I was counting on. This wasn't an anomaly as most of the passengers got sick at one time or another and my wife got sick a couple days before the end of the cruise. This was a 24 hour gastrointestinal bug that not only affected the passengers but the staff as well. My wife and I have been disappointed that Viking hasn't offered us any compensation for any future cruises. The other disappointment I have is that, with only a few weeks left, we asked our travel agent if there were any openings on the second or third decks as the only one we could originally get was on the lowest deck. We were able to get one on the second deck after paying $800 each for the upgrade. What we weren't told was that the staterooms on that deck aren't all the same and the center passageway is off center for the boat and we upgraded to a room which was much smaller than the one we had in November 2015 when we went to Germany. All in all the cruise was pleasurable, but the above issues were both negatives in our minds concerning the overall Viking experience Read Less

We really wanted to see the "Windmills and Tulips" tour. We always arrive a day early just in case there is any problem with international travel. We stayed at the Marriott Renaissance for the night and taxied to the embarkation point. Evidently the ship was moored at a brand new location not near the central cruise terminal. Just by chance the hotel had a Viking representative in the lobby for another tour. She was a life saver in redirecting our driver to the correct location. Joining the ship was seamless. Quite different that the large ocean cruise process we had experienced before. We were shown to our cabin by a lovely shore attendant and our bags were delivered within minutes. The cabin was also a change from our previous multiple ocean cruises. It was smaller and the French balcony wasn't really a balcony. More of a sliding door with a rail upon which to lean. No matter, though, as we spent more time topside than in our cabin. The bed was the most comfortable of any cruise and the A/C was superb. Great ventilation and temperature control. Dining was buffet at breakfast and lunch and sit-down for dinner. The food was widely varied and well prepared. Our waiter quickly learned our preferences and brought bread, butter, OJ, soft drinks and wine without prompting. Wine and beer were complimentary at lunch and dinner. The entertainment was local at each port. Most shows were representative of the local culture and presented by entertainers obviously accustomed to a wide range of guests. The cabin attendant was Cracker Jack. Always cheery with a warm greeting and anxious to meet our every need. I did have a short case of the G-I Blues for one day and he attended me with cold Sprite while my wife continued on the excursions. Speaking of the excursions, all were led by very knowledgable guides and presented exactly what we were looking for in our cruise. We did have poor weather, however. Cold, rain, wind and cloudy. Obviously out of the control of Viking but they made every effort to make sure everyone was dressed appropriately and had an umbrella. Overall, this was the best of our eight cruises, seven of which were ocean and this the only river cruise. I look forward to using Viking again. Read Less

Helpful staff, great food, fun excursions--definitely met our expectations! We were pleased with all aspects of the cruise. For example, we had concerns about visiting Brussels after the recent terrorist attack, so an alternative excursion was offered. Our trip to the windmills was challenging due to the heavy rain, but we managed to climb one anyhow. I accidentally lost a small bag while climbing the windmill, and the staff went back to retrieve it for me. One lady slipped and fell on her face and got a bloody nose, and she was given the best possible medical attention. Also, the waiters in the dining hall were amazing. They remembered each morning that we liked warm milk for our coffee, and they brought it to us without our even having to request it! The food was delicious, and I liked the fact that traditional foods from the countires we visited were offered. The evening entertainment (singing quartets, wooden shoe carver, etc.) were terrific. The pianist was incredible. He took requests, and there didn't seem to be a song that he didn't know, and he never seemed to tire of playing our favorite song each night--"May I Have This Dance for the Rest of Your Life?" We have been on a Viking River Cruise before. The experience then was excellent. We have reviewed other firms advertisements but have seen nothing that has convinced us to switch away from Viking. This cruise, Tulips and Windmills, was the first cruise of the season this year for this itinerary. Unfortunately this year, this was a week too early for the tulip fields to be in bloom and the weather had just turned to spring. This is just luck of the draw. The shore excursions, both included and optional were all excellent. Staff on-board the ship were professional, competent and most helpful and friendly throughout. The food was consistently delicious and varied from day to day so as never getting boring. With the selections available, there was always several choices that I enjoyed if the main dish was something that I did not want. The house wines and beers were very good. Was nice to sample local beers that were not available at home. The well known local beers were also available. Being on the first run of the season, the embarkation direct from the airport onto the ship well before noon after the overnight flight was most welcome and appreciated. Later in the season, one can't often get into ones rooms for a snooze until the afternoon. Read Less

We were not keen on going on an ocean cruise and decided we would try a river cruise and choose to go on a Viking Danube Waltz river cruise. We choose December as prices were very reasonable then and we loved the idea of seeing all the Christmas markets in the various towns/cities we were due to visit. We had also booked the pre cruise trip to Budapest and we were glad we did this as Budapest is such a lovely city and it was great to have a bit more time to enjoy this wonderful city. From embarking on to our longship, Viking Skadi, we got the impression that we were going to have a great time and Viking didn't fail us. We just had a standard stateroom and there was ample space and facilities for us as we spent most of the time out of our stateroom. As long as we had a comfortable bed, ample storage facilities and good shower we are happy with this. The stateroom attendants kept the rooms spotless and ensured all the toiletries and tea/coffee were replenished daily. All staff on Viking Skadi were brilliant and their main agenda is to ensure all the clients have a great trip; nothing was too much trouble for any of them. Our Programme Director ensured we were all briefed daily regarding the trips taking place the next day and if there were optional trips you may wish to book. We did book the optional opera trip in Vienna and thoroughly enjoyed this and would definitely recommend this. There were various programmes organised in the ship either in the afternoon or evening which were also very good and you could choose if you wished to attend or not. You are given a GPS system for all the excursions which meant you could be a distance away from the group and guide and could still hear the guide's narrative which was really good as you didn't feel you had to get in a group huddle all the time. Guides were all very knowledgeable with excellent English. The food on the ship was first class and beer, wine and soft drinks were flowing at lunch and dinner if you wished to partake. You could choose A La Carte for lunch and dinner or the slightly more informal dining near the bar area. We usually had lunch in the bar area as we preferred something light and choose to have A La Carte in the Dining Room for dinner. This was a 3 course meal and there was always something from the regional specialties to choose or if you preferred there is always steak, chicken or salmon to choose. The food really was delicious and the Chef would come round the tables beforehand to introduce a regional specialty and afterwards to ask if everyone enjoyed their meal. Dining is free choice which means you could sit wherever you wished which meant we got to eat meals with a variety of different fellow travellers which made meal time very interesting and meant you got to know more of your fellow travellers. We met some really lovely people on the cruise. Being December this meant that all the places we visited had their Christmas decorations up which added to the atmosphere. Melk looked particularly picturesque with the Main Street lined with little Christmas trees decorated with lights. This was our first Viking cruise and we were so impressed that we have already booked a Rhine cruise and the St Petersburg to Moscow cruise! Read Less

Dance floor was small but we were often only couple dancing. Piano player was excellent. Met very many friendly people cruising; was my favorite cruise ever. Tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Would not have enjoyed our first trip to Europe as much without their knowledge and tips. There was so much to do but never felt rushed; could always go off on own if didn't want to go on tour. Flight to Europe on Lufthansa was very good; flight back on an American carrier was not as good. Read Less

This was my first river cruise and my wife and I couldn't have picked a better introductory cruise. This was also my wife's first trip to Europe. The itinerary for the Danube Waltz trip contained the right amount of excursions to learn about the different countries and cultures, as well as, giving us time to stroll through the numerous Christmas Markets. The weather was also a big factor into the overall awesome experience. The activities both onboard the Viking Skadi and on shore kept us busy every day. Our Program Director, Valentin Gheorghe, put together a great agenda for the guests. His attention to detail and willingness to talk to any guest with a problem or for local advice was truly commendable. His suggestion on where to get Hungarian goulash was first rate. Thank you again, Valentin. The food onboard was outstanding. Executive Chef, Jan Blanar, and his crew created delicious courses for all meals. The Taste of Austria was over-the-top excellent. Maitre d', Daniel, was very professional and his staff did a fantastic job throughout the cruise. Being able to sample local cuisines (meals and wines) and having local entertainment come onboard was truly an amazing experience. Our housekeeping was also excellent. Viking's representatives were very helpful once we landed in Budapest until we departed Munich. No unexpected issues or anxiety to worry about. First class service to ease you into your upcoming cruise and to get you on your way home. Not knowing what to expect, we were extremely happy with our cruise and plan to book more trips in the future. These will include Viking's Ocean Cruises. We have been speaking our praises of Viking to all of our friends who are interested in river cruises. Read Less

I made this cruise with a long time friend who loves to travel, loves Christmas, and loves to shop, like me! Our transfer to the longship went off without a hitch. Our ship was the Skadi. What a wonderful crew! They knew our name, attended to our needs promptly and with a smile. The ship was terrific and we loved our cabin which was Stateroom 305 on Veranda (A) The port and shore excursions were terrific. Loved the listening packs. So helpful! The guides were locals who really knew about the area and gave interesting tidbits which made it even more interesting and gave us a real connection with the city/town. We loved having the time on our own and instructions were always clear as to how to get back to our ship or the pick-up bus. The time schedule was easy for us and we had time to do everything we wanted with out stress or hurry. We thoroughly enjoyed all the entertainment evenings as well. Sharon and I met some wonderful people that we enjoyed hanging out with. Our transfer from ship to airport was easy tho it left so early that it was still too dark and we would have loved to have enjoyed the views on our way to Munich. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat!!! It was a memory of a lifetime with a dear friend. Best river cruise I ever made! (Out of 3, & one of those was a Christmas Cruise as well) Thank you! Read Less
