My late brother suggested that we do one more cruise together after last year's incredible Viking Budapest to Amsterdam trip in June of 2016. He felt life was short and ergo we need to do at least one more extraordinary trip together. He passed away suddenly October 13, 2016. We went with him in our loving memory as his wife encouraged us to do. He was right! This was yet another exceptional experience; one that will stay with us for ever! The dining experience was phenomenal with my husband's Chateau Briand Steak the best he has ever had. The serving portions were utter perfection with the selections for every meal outstanding! The wines poured were wonderful. The services was 5 star to say the least! The hotel Steigenberger in Berlin was fantastic with great location and fabulous dining. The Berlin excursions were good. The only negative comment is The Taste of Berlin was not at all what was described as we were not taken to or treated to any of the items promised save for one wurst. Viking did step up afterwards and offered either a refund of $198 or a $400 voucher for another trip. We took the voucher as we know Viking is the best was to travel. We hope to try an ocean cruise next! The Corinthia Hotel in Prague was wonderful but the location was less than desirable as it was far away from the main square. The breakfast provided was superior! The Radisson Blu Hotel in Krakow was the best for location and accommodations, with breakfast being just OK. The Sofitel in Warsaw was beautiful, great location, great breakfast but with horrible beds and service was just fair. We should have had one more day in Warsaw as we had much more to see. All of the tours were above and beyond our expectations as were the concert/folk evenings. The guides after Berlin were brilliant and very warm, and caring! They added so much to our trip which really made this not a vacation per se but a luxury education! We LOVE Viking! And please if booking the Elegant Elbe trip be sure to add on the Prague, Krakow & Warsaw add on if at all possible. To go that far and not have that experience with these guides and so much WWII history would be a huge mistake! Read Less

We are not cruisers, per se, but the itinerary, the size of the ship and Viking's reputation spurred us to give it a shot. We've been on many guided tours around the world and rank Viking's Grand European Cruise as one of our best overseas vacations. The on-board staff were wonderfully helpful, professional and knew their stuff. We missed a connection because of bad weather--we went one way, our luggage another. They bent over backwards to ensure that our bags arrived before we set sail. We were impressed with most of the local guides, too. Excellent choices as far as the ports and shore excursions went. The entire tour was a history lesson of the most enlightening and entertaining nature. The options that we selected were most enjoyable and/or informative. Well worth the price. The ship was spotless, the service impeccable. A great crew! Did not rate Fitness and Recreation because we were too busy sopping up the culture and enrichment activities. The proof is in the pudding: we intend to do another Viking River Cruise in 2019. Read Less

Heard from others that they truly enjoyed this trip, so decided to try it. Was not disappointed at all. Days flew by quickly because we were so busy in a nice casual way. Up early for breakfast and then off to a tour each day. Some days were full tour days with some walk around and some on our own to wander. We had time to play cards with old friends and enjoyed meeting new ones. Freedom to enjoy the sundeck for most of the trip was great with one morning a guided tour on deck of both sides of the river. This was one of the highlights. Evening starting with a nice dinner with new and old friends and ended in the lounge. Some nights dancing to the lovely music and some nights playing team games or listening to guest musicians or a presentation of glass blowing or some educational theme. The staff were wonderful but have to highlight our cruise director. He was above excellent. He was well versed in every aspect of this adventure. There were no questions he could not answer and he took care of everyone's special issues. There was one time, someone was too long on a tour and missed their bus back to the ship. The lady could not walk with others who choose to walk back to the ship. The cruise director just called a cab for her and away she went. Another time a woman fell and broke her foot on the steps. One of the staff accompanied her to the hospital, acting as her interpreter and also being ready to pay for the bill, in case the injured person's insurance wouldn't cover it. All in all, with the diversity being offered, time was well spent in enjoyment, learning and meeting some wonderful people. I'd highly recommend Viking for their care of each individual person on board and of course what they offer. Read Less

We met at breakfast, did our tours and then shared supper together going over the highlights of the day. The food was ALWAYS good. We met so many wonderful people on the cruise with us. The staff was so helpful/friendly. We want to go on another Viking cruise together. Having gone to a family wedding in Vienna this summer, and having to plan all transportation, meals, entertainment etc. ourselves, it gave me a greater appreciation of all that is provided by Viking during the "Grand European Tour". All a person needs to do on a Viking Cruise is enjoy. Viking has done all the hard work! I have recommended Viking to everyone who has asked how my river cruise was. If I could I would an annual trip aboard a Viking Cruise ship. What a fun way to travel! Read Less

This was our second river cruise with Viking and we liked the ease of being on the boat for 14 days with minimal packing and unpacking and cruising all of the rivers. So relaxing. While all the cities, sites, tours were incredible we liked being on the river seeing the world at 11mph the best. This was the "Easy Button" of all vacations that we have taken - it is no surprise this is the most favorite cruise they have. We all appreciated the educational, musical, and fun events in the evening. The history of the river was very interesting and educational. I dont know how the Viking staff could have done a better job of taking care of us - they seemed to be able to read our mind at times and when things didnt go as planned they changed the plans. We were on a day tour of Strassburg and on the way back to the meeting point we were informed the boat would be late due to getting through the locks so we all just met at a local bar and had drinks and mingled with the locals - a wonderful time was had by all. Would like to do the trip again except this time I would like to start in Amersterdam and go to Budapest and spend a couple of days in Amersterdam prior to getting onto the ship. Read Less

We had previously been on the Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basil. Thoroughly enjoyed it and decided to take a longer cruise this time. Viking lives up to its advertising. The ship is spotless, Staff cannot do enough for you. I have been on "big" cruise boats and will never go back. Viking is our choice. We plan to make a Viking Ocean cruise December of 2018. This time Australia to New Zeland. The limited number of people makes for a much better experience. The river boats have a max of 190 guests and the ocean 998. this is manageable. The barman even knew what I liked to drink on the second night. Great service. The side trips vary. Some are free and some you need pay extra for. The side trips we paid for were worth every penny. Viking uses a microphone for its' guides, you have an earphone and always hear every word of the guide's presentation even at a distance. No having to get to the head of the group to hear what is going on. Read Less

TV advertisements looked wonderful so we decided to go. The lectures and historical tours taught us much. The guides were first rate. We had no negative experiences. The food was delicious, gourmet but not pretentious. The crew was very friendly and genuinely wished us to have a good time. One of the best things was sitting with other passengers at meals and during the delightful entertainment evenings and getting to know about them. We are American and chatted with Canadians and Australians. So as a bonus we learned about farming life in Canada and about how things are in Australia. We enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to dress up for meals or the evening, just nicer clothes than we had worn on our daily tours. Also the fact that the cruise included tours at each stop made our planning easy and there were no surprise extras that we had to pay for. Read Less

Being I was alone, I wanted a smaller ship with a smaller number of passengers. Viking had the European Cruise I wanted & a the ship size, plus the accomodations were excellent. The food, service people and the planned port & excursion trips worked beautifully. I would most certainly plan another river cruise with Viking. The seating arrangement worked out well for me. I got to sit with different guests at the smaller table of 6 and got to know people quicker. The staff was more than helpful when I lost contact with my phone or i-pad to keep in touch with my family. Two couples I met , more or less took me under their wing because this was my first cruise and they were well traveled. From not knowing anyone on the first night to becoming good friends before the trip ended was a wonderful experience! The staff all spoke english and went out of their way to be helpful. Read Less

I selected this cruise because the itinerary has been on my fridge for 4 years. The price dropped and I got a awesome deal. River cruising is different than ocean cruising so do not expect the same food, entertainment, etc. If you do, you will be disappointed. Cruising rivers in Europe take time with the water levels and locks. The ship was in good shape. Our veranda cabin was nice. When we double docked (yes, this does happen), our balcony was up against the other ship. This is common on the river. Meals varied in cuisine. One restaurant and one more relaxed option is available. Just how many restaurants do you expect to be provided for 180 passengers? Realistically, you cannot expect more. Now for the staff - second to none! The program director Ben is unbelievable. I still do not know when he sleeps. The front desk staff (especially Vivian) are awesome. The hotel staff are great. Restaurant and bar staff are excellent. Even the crew staff (maintenance, navigation, etc.) are excellent. Finally, please note this is a 15 day cruise. What type of people can afford to be gone for over 2 weeks? Old, retired, (and sometimes stuffy) retired people and this is the majority of the passengers. Remember, you are on this cruise to see places and explore the world, not eat, sleep and rock in a chair with fellow cruisers. Read Less

We had a great time on this cruise. Viking has small boats - only holding up to 190 passengers which is perfect for this type of cruising. There was a new port every day and the shore excursions were led by someone who lived in the immediate area. We each had our own listening device so there was never a problem trying to hear what the tour guide was saying. They also provided bottled water for each excursion. The ship was clean and our room was in tip-top shape. The crew was always friendly and professional. There were two locations from which to choose for breakfast, lunch and dinner - you could have a light meal on the Aquivit Terrace or eat in the dining room. Either way the food was very good and plentiful. Wine (white or red) was served with both lunch and dinner. There was a coffee/tea station (with cookies/treats) on each level of the ship.that was always well stocked. Ben, our Program Director was a hoot. He was always available to assist and his English accent added a bit of flair to the various games and entertainment activities that were available. I first saw a Viking advertisement on PBS. A Viking longboat sailing through the Wachau Valley. I thought that it was a nice bit of photoshop but that is EXACTLY what the valley looks like. Stunningly beautiful with the ship serenely floating down the river, with castles and quaint towns on either side. And no, this was not the wine talking. The trip was very relaxing. The scenery gorgeous. You could sit on the deck and watch the world go by, all the while being waited on by Viking staff. Was everything perfect? Well no, it was way, way too hot, and of course we prepared for 60 degree weather per my reviews of weather predictions for the time of year. And some off the venues had way too many tourists. But, as my husband pointed out - the tourists would have been there anyway - whether we planned the trip ourselves or had Viking take care of transportation and ticket purchasing. So let Viking do the work for you. It is well worth the money. Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise and found it was so much more relaxing than ocean cruises. The service was wonderful as was the food. The small ship made it more likely to meet new people. The tours were well led and the guides were easy to hear and understand. Our cabin with a French balcony was comfortable but with very little space to store clothes. Cabins with a regular balcony had almost twice as much storage space. It was fun going through 68 locks rising in elevation and then going back down. It was interesting to see the top deck being collapsed to pass under low bridges and then restored to full height. Also it was nice to have beer and different wine included with each of the the meals. The free WiFi was also appreciated. Overall it was a wonderful cruise and we are looking forward to another river cruise soon. Read Less

We booked through Viking extra days in Amsterdam prior to embarkation and days after debarkation in Prague both were exceptional. The Hotels were well appointed and very well located. The ship was always immaculate. The tour busses modern and very comfortable. This Grand European river cruise has been on my wish list for a long time. We started in Budapest on Saturday, May 6, the Skadi is a lovely ship, our cabin was nice, it would have been nice to have two chairs instead of one chair and a stool, but otherwise was comfortable. The dining was wonderful, I needed special foods because of allergies and Ivan was wonderful assisting me. The ship's entertainment was fun and the service outstanding. I was surprised at the many ships at each port we visited. Sometimes several ships had to raft and walk through to get ashore, once we had to climb up to the top deck and cross over the top deck of the adjacent ship, then descend down to get off the ship. The included shore excursions were great, those guides were outstanding and the choices of ports was good. I was disappointed in the paid excursion to the Lipizzaner horses, we did not realize we would not get to see them perform or exercise, instead we had a tour of the stables. For the price of euro 99, for "Behind the Scenes at the Lipizzans" it was not what I expected. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress tour was a disappointment too. I could have taken the Cable Car and walked through the Fortress for 8 euros instead of euro 49 because the so called guide who did a ridiculous skit as we walked through the outside to the Bier Garden where he left us to go tour on our own. Had it not been for these two excursions this would have been a 5 star cruise. There is so much history about WWII to be seen on this tour, I had read about the shoes memorial left along the Danube River in Budapest. The Skadi was anchored nearby. Seeing it saddened me to think this was done by the Nazi's. I loved seeing the castles and homes along the rivers. Cruising down the rivers and going through the locks was wonderful, it was exciting to watch the ship rise up and cross the Continental Divide then descend through the Main to the Rhine River. Passing the Lorelai and hearing the story was wonderful. Seeing the Windmills at Kinderdijk was interesting, there were too many people inside the mill to be able tours upstairs. Read Less

We choose this cruise to return to some of the places my wife and I visited during my military career some 30+ years ago. Found the cruise in your brochure and my travel agent recommended it. Everything went smoothly from arriving in Budapest to leaving Amsterdam 2 weeks later. The ship is wonderful and everything is clean and functional. The dining experiences were exceptional. The staff was outstanding and appeared to take an honest caring for you. The service they provided was what you would expect to receive in a 5 star resturant or hotel. The entertainment was satisfactory. The ports we stopped at and shore excursions were great. The best part of the trip for us was the small number of guests (87) to be around, and no children. I would highly recommend Viking and this type of river cruise anyone. We are looking into another cruise in the future. Read Less

We chose the Grand European Cruise because the itinerary covered destinations we had not visited previously. We chose Viking because of our experience with them on our previous Russian river cruise and our Mediterranean cruise. We booked both the pre and post cruise stays in Amsterdam and Budapest. Transfers were smoothly handled by Viking. Viking staff were exceptionally helpful in arranging for touring of pre and post cities. We found that the combination of included and optional tours gave us an excellent overview of four countries and the important sites of 14 ports. The Skadi was immaculate from stem to stern. Our stateroom was more than adequate. Our steward kept it spotless. The food was top-notch and the dining staff were efficient and accommodating. Entertainment was varied. Guest demonstrations and presentations were also included. Daily briefings about each port were informative and helpful for planning. The organization and execution of daily tours was well coordinated. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable about the subject matter of their tours. Captain Tietz and his crew navigated the rivers and canal with ease. He spoke informally with passengers on several occasions in the lounge. He made every effort to insure that passengers safety and needs were his first consideration. It was pleasing to note that he would even lend a hand to assist staff members in their duties. In addition, it was quite common for him to join guests having breakfast. We are looking forward to sailing with Viking again. Read Less

Since the culture in Europe is changing so rapidly with immigration, I wanted to visit the Netherlands and Belgium now. The Skadi is one of the new Viking long ships and is very nice. Having traveled on a previous Viking cruise on an older ship, I was disappointed the window in our lower cabin was much smaller than the older ship. Be careful to point the shower head away from the shower door, or the bathroom floor will be wet. The bathroom sinks are very small, so do not turn the faucet on full force or the water will "jump" out of the bowl onto your feet. The staff were extremely caring and pleasant, meals were good, included excursions were well done (the home visit was very nice). Several had asked for a way to attend a religious service on Easter Sunday, either on board or in the city; but that did not happen. An alternative would have been to have offered a space and time for passengers to voluntarily meet to read the Easter story from the Bible, possibly sing a hymn, etc. We enjoyed the optional trip to the tulip farm which helped us to see the countryside and understand the tulip industry. We also enjoyed the trip to the farm which made cheese and took home some of their products. Having an interest in history, a trip to the optional Open Air Museum presented a wonderful collection of actual historical buildings that were reassembled at the park. Costumed guides in businesses such a fishing, linseed oil, dairy, peat, etc. were informative. My favorite house was from the 1700's which housed both the family and livestock. The weather was unseasonably cold and windy. Take warm outer clothing, gloves, and a hat just in case of cold weather. We spent the "full" day in Burgess, but were still able to take a Viking bus afterwards to Ghent where we walked 15 minutes to Gravensteen Castle which after April 1 is open until 6:00. It is unfurnished, but does give the feel of a medieval castle. After the 1400's, it was a center for justice and punishment and has an interesting collection of torture and punishment instruments (check website for cost) Underestimating my husband's interest in WWII history, I wish I had scheduled the optional tour which explored the military history of "A Bridge too Far" in Arnhem. Overall we had a great time and understand how dykes, windmills, Delta Works, etc. allow people to live many feet underneath sea level. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it took us to new ports we'd never seen before. While we had been to Amsterdam as a pre-cruise extension last October (Rhine Getaway), we throughly enjoyed being back there. The Belgian cities were absolutely delightful, with Bruges being my favorite. The Netherlands is a delightfully unique place to visit and ending with the stunning Keukenhof Gardens was surprisingly gorgeous! We have now done 5 Viking cruises and have 4 more booked, one this fall and 3 next year. We would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite among them, and would not mind repeating many of the adventures. Regardless, if someone reading this review is considering Tulips and Windmills, we highly recommend it. It might be a tiny bit better to depart a week later than our late March departure as, I understand, there will be even more lovely Tulips and other flowers to enjoy. Read Less

I really enjoyed our cruise, our cabin was beautiful, the staff was amazing especially our cruise director. As we embarked early in the morning we were greeted with coffee and pastries, we were lucky enough to be the first cruise of the season so we got to go straight to our rooms. Every night we were informed of the next days activities and everything always ran smoothly and efficiently when we left the ship and did our excursions. The Excursions were for the most part amazing, my only complaint is that we were not given enough free time to explore on our own. The guides would promise us time but it was always only at the most 1/2 an hour would be given to us. That is not enough time to explore even the smallest of towns. Most of the optional cruises were definitely worth the amount we paid, but again if we did the optional cruise we would not have time to explore the port. The dining room was first class, from the food to the service, from Breakfast to dinner, to late nights snacks at the coffee bar. I love Viking and we are already looking forward to our next sailing. We took a Viking River Cruise in Russia 5 years ago, and enjoyed it so much that when we needed a new vacation destination we didn't hesitate to pick Viking again, this time the Grand European from Amsterdam to Budapest with a three night extension in Prague. The ship is lovely and clean, staff ever so friendly and helpful. We were in balcony room 307 which was just a couple rooms down from the lobby. The hallways are very long, so it's nice to be at the lobby-end of the ship. The rooms are small, but you don't spend much time in them. Balcony was nice to have, but certainly not essential. We had our beds in the twin configuration, and that restricted access to the electrical plugs for the bed closest to the bathroom. Heated floors in the bathroom were especially nice, and useful to help dry hand laundry. Everything on the ship is so well designed. The public areas are beautiful and comfortable. There are two coffee/cookie/muffin stations always open, with baked goods varying depending on the hour. Food was just wonderful, lots of variety, and often hard to choose what to pick. Almost everyone on the ship got an upper respiratory disease by the end of the trip, so lots of coughing going on. We could have used a bit more "comfort food" - chicken soup instead of cream soups, grilled cheese, etc. The tours were all very good, using local guides (unlike our Russia cruise, which primarily used guides that traveled with us). Plenty of walking, but mostly pretty easy. As you'd expect, lots of palaces, castles and churches. But I did fine, even coming off knee and hip replacement surgeries the last few years. There are a couple stretches of gorgeous cruising, in the middle Rhine and the Wachau valley. We had wonderful weather for both, and totally enjoyed every castle ruin and town. The staff is perfect and so hard working. These are hard jobs and they do them very well with an appearance of joy. We had extraordinary program and hotel directors. And we were very lucky with our fellow travelers. Not one grump (a Rick Steves term so important for traveling groups) among them. A few Aussies, Kiwis, Brits, lots of Canadians, mostly Americans, and an uncle/nephew from Hong Kong. Several women traveling together. Every one of them delightful, with a story to tell. Not one thought they were better than everyone else or trying to manipulate an in-crowd (like high school). We've seen that on other trips. The post trip to Prague was fine, but we weren't feeling well by that point. About a 4 hour bus trip from Budapest to Prague, and an okay stay at a convention hotel - Corinthia. I'm ready to go again, now that my coughing has stopped. Keep up the good work, Viking. Read Less

Our Viking Ship Skaadi provided a beautiful cabin, delicious food, and wonderful service. The views from our room were often breath-taking and, overall, the trip was magical. However, in several ports, we docked adjacent another Viking boat and the view was blocked. To have the advantage of seeing the Budapest skyline from our cabin only to have it blocked by our own cruise company was frustrating. Viking's personnel are amazing-- charming, charismatic, and devoted to providing a positive experience for their clients. We were highly impressed and noted that Viking must be an oustanding employer. Most of the excursions were high-quality with very knowledgeable guides. However, not all passengers heeded the physical requirements for some of the paid excursions, and a great deal of time was devoted to moving them along. I believe in being inclusive; however, my husband and I left one expensive tour and ventured out on our own because the pace was painfully slow. Overall, our Viking experience was beautiful and satisfyingly enriching. We will be taking more! Just returned from a Viking river Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. This was first river cruise and we must say that we were glad that we booked with Viking. We have done all kinds of big ship cruising which we have thoroughly enjoyed but we have now found a new experience that is even better. Although the price of a river cruise surpasses the cost of liner cruising it is a totally different experience and worth the difference in price. The biggest difference is that you are experiencing amazing scenery each and every day. There are no "sea days" where you only see water everywhere you look. Even though there are a couple of days(out of 15) where you don't dock, you are always seeing vistas of the lands that you are passing through. To begin with, the Viking crew was amazing. We sailed on the Skadi and every crew member was pleasant and helpful. Each and every one of them was pleasant and helpful and it made you feel totally comfortable and safe. The fact that you are mingling with only appprox 190 guests, makes the experience much more personal. After a few days, you almost know everyone on the ship and interact with them all on a personnel and collegial basis. The only regret that we had was that we did this trip a bit late in the season. We sailed on Oct 1st and as an afterthought it probably would have been better around the first part of September as the weather was a little cool and wet. However, we got through all that and still managed to enjoy ourselves. As for the cruise itself, the one nice thing is that Viking provides a tour at each stop which is included in your fees. There are also optional tours that are offered at an extra cost. The Viking provided tours had excellent guides that were very knowledgeable of the cities that we visited. The food that was presented was both plentiful and delicious and again, the wait staff in the dining room were exceptional. The ship itself was absolutely immaculate. The staff were continuously cleaning every aspect of the ship, from the hall ways, the open areas, to the top open deck area. We have never seen such attention to cleanliness throughout the ship. One of the things that impressed us was that every Viking staff member went out of their way to make the cruise enjoyable. One day stood out in our minds as to how they take care of their passengers. We were on a tour of a city and there was going to be a delay when the ship was available to pick us up(due to backups in the lock system) for about an hour. So, the cruise director arranged for us all 180 of us to go to a pub while we waited. As we arrived, several members of the crew were there to greet us and then we were provided free refreshments while we waited to re-board. A nice touch! We also tacked on a couple of days in Amsterdam after our cruise and again we experienced the attention that Viking pays to its passengers. To begin with, your bags are brought from your room directly to the transportation that will take you to your post stay hotel. (No looking and claiming your bags in a huge warehouse like a cruise ship). Once we arrived at the hotel, there was a Viking rep to greet us and to answer any questions that we had. They were there every day of our post cruise stay to provide assistance. Then of the final morning, they were then again present to make sure that everyone got off to the airport. Once we arrived at the airport, there was another Viking rep to greet us and make sure that we got to the proper check-in location for our flight home. To say the least, the service was amazing. Of course, there are pros and cons to each style of cruising. The setbacks to this type of ship is that there are no amenities to enjoy as on the bigger ships such as fitness rooms, saunas, spas, pools. However, these are intended to be more site seeing experiences. Another nice thing about these ships is that you don't have to go through the screening that you see on the big ships. You don't have to have your bags scanned and you are allowed to bring whatever you want to enjoy on your cruise. In fact, you are allowed to bring local wines on the ship and they will serve them to you without a corkage fee. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise and are planning our next one. Read Less
