We arrived the day the cruise started but would go a couple of days earlier if ever go again, Embarkation was very smooth and the crew were exceptional the ship was very long and low our room was great small but we were only in it at night, The dinning was excellent with choices of sit down dinning or smorgasbord. The food was excellent and lots of it. The wines were great at our meals and the staff were the best. The entertainment while travelling was very good and lots to do.The shore excursions were great very informative our guides were great and answered all our questions as well as kept track of every one. Our buses very very clean and our guide on the buses very good. After our tours a couple of times we were allowed to travel around on our own and we had great directions how to get back to the ship. There was a very good way of knowing who was off the ship and when you came back with card telling the phone numbers and room numbers so was very hard to get lost.My wife and I loved the whole trip and would definitely go again. We disembarked in Budapest and went to the airport by bus and we had a guide go with us and helped us get to the right areas as well could speak the language. We enjoyed our trip so much we just booked the world cruise with the Viking Sun . Read Less

This was our 2nd Viking cruise, the other being in 2014 in Russia for 14 days was wonderful and exciting, now comes my coparison. This cruise "The Grand European Tour" from Budapest to Amsterdam on the Embla was average at best. We did the pre and post cruise extensions. Lack of local entertainment on board, 2 of which were musical and very nice and a local glass blower who was more about selling his goods. Each night at 6:45 there was a briefing for the next days included and optional excursions where the program director was in the zone for selling the optional tours. The first night she went on and on about the upcoming optional tours like an encyclopedia salesman. The dining staff was short staffed at best, very rushed, twice we had to ask where our food was. a few nights we were finishing dinner and wanted another glass of wine and just chat with friends and low and behold the wine is gone and they are setting up for breakfast with clanging dishes, just horrible service. then I was not feeling well with a chest cold nad canceled one of our optional tours for the next day which I explained to the concierge at the front desk and he knew I was sick. He had told me he couldn't do anything because we booked online and when we got home just call Viking for a refund and they would confirm I was sick. Not so! Called viking and was told that the policy is no refunds under any circumstances. all in all it was an expensive lesson I will never repeat and our plan after our Viking river cruise was a Viking cruise every other year. Not happening now. They really nickle and dime you. Theyt have grown to fast over the last couple of years in my opinion. Sorry Viking, you reap what you sow. Read Less

We thought this cruise would offer the "best bang for the buck" and were not disappointed. The only disappointment was the optional tour to the horse farm in Hungry, which did not meet our expectations. I had been on a brief ocean cruise and did not care for it, while I enjoyed every minute on the river boat. We didn't know we were moving unless we looked out the window. The staff was as wonderful as everything else. We are sold on river cruises as well as Viking and plan to travel the rivers of the world with them again. Having them book the flights so they picked us up and the airport and dropped us off at the gate with assistance at the airport were extras that we really appreciated. We were disappointed that we didn't get to see or spend any time in Amsterdam at the end of the tour. We wish that we would have had time to do the extension on that end. Read Less

Friends recommended this cruise to me. The cruise was fantastic! More than I had expected! I really enjoyed the home tour in Croatia. The staff on board were all from the countries that we were visiting. The tour guides were also from the countries we toured and had also been to the United States at least once! It was so interesting to hear the staff and tour guides' stories. The small number of people on board made it easy to get to know other people and make new friends! I am on face book and e-mail with several of the people we met. The tours were like walking through a history book! Absolutely wonderful and I would highly recommend!!! In fact I have told everyone I meet about the wonderful time I had and how I thought the price was very reasonable especially when you consider everything that was included! Read Less

We did a tour of Amsterdam, prior to boarding the long boat. Once aboard, we were greeted with smiles, escorted to our suite, and shown all the amenities of the room. The dining room is open seating and we found that we enjoyed eating meals with different people; many became friends over the course of the trip. There is a lounge where lectures, entertainment and demonstrations are done. There is a small dance floor and it was used by some fancy steppers. The customer service and staff was top notch; they felt like friends. I don't understand how they keep everyone straight, but they do, and are so helpful with anything you're interested in, even if it's going somewhere off the beaten path. We did many of the free provided excursions and felt they were accommodating to everyone, offering different paced groups. The ports we visited, and areas we sailed were truly impressive and I would love to go again someday. Go Viking! It is great! Read Less

We had researched several different cruise lines and based on Vikings reputation and travel dates this appeared to be the most suitable. We were very pleased with our choice. The service was excellent and we found all the staff were very attentive. We found river cruising to be a very relaxed way to cruise versus large ocean cruising. The front desk staff knew us by name and were very attentive. They provided us with local maps and great instructions to use public transportation for those times we wanted to go out and explore on our own. We enjoyed the flexibility of being able to come and go as we pleased. In most cases we were very conveniently docked and you could easily go for a stroll at your leisure. The program director worked very hard to ensure everyone was happy with their tours and gained the most from their cruise experience. Read Less

Chosen for the size and the number of passengers it holds. We liked that it wasn't overly crowded.. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful with any questions. Thought the selection of the food was very good and also tasted great. We purchased the silver package which we enjoyed very much with our fellow travelers that were with us. The layout of the ship was very nice with both seating inside and outside. Sitting in the front of the ship in the outdoor area was an enjoyable way to view the scenery and relax. Spent a lot of time in the lounge area before and after dinner having drinks and talking about the days adventures and what we would be doing the next day. Cabin size was large enough where we didn't seem too crowded. Size didn't matter anyway as not much time spent there. The excursions which were included in the price were interesting and the guides for the most part were informative about the area we were visiting. All of the buses we used were clean and comfortable with good drivers. All in all we had a great time and are looking forward to booking our next adventure with Viking Cruise Line. Read Less

We had never done a river cruise, although we've done many ocean cruises. We thought this would be a great way to see the Eastern bloc countries of Europe. We had many issues trying to book this tour and almost gave up. If we had not been traveling with friends, we would not have gone! Since stairs are a problem for me, I asked if there was an elevator and was told yes. The elevator, however, did not go to our cabin's floor. Our room was so noisy due to plumbing problems that sleep was almost impossible! The room smelled like a sewer and the shower bubbled up. Disgusting. When reported, we were told they had tried to fix it and added crystals for the odor. The noise and gurgling continued; the smell improved slightly. Meals were rushed, wine served was horrid, and dining room extremely loud and chaotic! We discovered a smaller place to dine which lacked the noise and was not rushed. Shore excursions by ship were fine! Entertainment on ship was so so. We had booked an extension to Prague and had been told it would involve an approx. 2 hour bus ride. When we inquired on the ship about the transfer we were told we would be informed later. We felt they were holding back something. Yes, they later informed us it was a 5 and a half hour bus ride. This meant two full days rather than 3 days in Prague. Hotels before and after sailing through ship were great! Security on the ship was non-existent. Anyone could have walked on. We will DEFINITELY NOT GO ON VIKING again. Read Less

Our family choose a Viking River Cruise because we had heard terrific reviews about the Viking Experience. We did the River Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest and had a terrific time. The walking excursions were all well done - great guides, good information, wonderful adventure! The crew were fantastic and the accommodations and meals great! The time off the ship was well organized and each person could choose to do as much or as little as they wanted - lots of variety and options. We enjoyed the entire trip and will book with Viking again! Having a smaller group of people on the boat made it possible to meet people and share experiences better. Meal times were a great time to talk with other people and also to find out about other cruise options. The meals were great with local choices as well as casual dining. The opportunity for quick, casual lunches was a great feature. Read Less

We chose a Viking river cruise because of the reviews, what was included on the cruise, and this particular itinerary. We were not disappointed! The tours were excellent. Each tour guide was knowledgeable and helpful when answering questions. We received a great overview of each city or town along with interesting historical content. The optional tours we elected to take were wonderful and significantly added to the quality of our experience. The artists and entertainers who came on board gave us the opportunity to experience even more of the culture of the area, and we made sure we attended every one! As far as meals go, I was surprised at the many food choices, and we appreciated having regional dishes on the menu. Each dish was delicious and well presented. Every single employee was courteous, friendly, and helpful. Several went above and beyond to make our experience special. We will definitely be sailing with Viking again. Read Less

We had planned this cruise for 2 years to mark a special anniversary and a milestone birthday. We had seen many advertisements both paper and media and thought we liked what we saw. Perhaps we should have checked some reviews. The river cruise was not inexpensive and the per night cost, in retrospect, was high for what we got. Yes, the air was "included", as were daily tours and dinner wine and beer. The daily tours mostly consisted of walking tours in cities, or driving tours with excellent guides who told us about the area's history. However, only two or three tours took you inside buildings. Churches/cathedrals were free to enter on your free time, but after several, we'd seen enough. In depth tours, were pricey although we did book two which we enjoyed to Salzburg and a Mozart/Strauss concert. However many other interesting and important opportunities were missed, such as a visit to the Place of Justice in Nuremberg. Just a drive by. We sailed through beautiful vineyards in Germany, but were served Argentinian wine! The staff on board was friendly and some were exceptional in their performance of duty such as the maitre d' and cruise director. The entertainment was repetitive with the same pianist on board for 14 days! On three occasions, two different groups came on board as did a glass blower. Don't waste your money on a French Balcony. What you see in ads is not what you get. Our room was so small that there was no room for a chair, only a small backless stool that barely fit between the bed and the ledge. Yes, we could open the lovely doors and see out. Romantic? Hardly. In order to sit with a glass of wine in hand and watch the lovely view, you could only sit on the bed! Two people dressing at the same time was not possible unless one used the bathroom, which was quite adequate for a ship. Sadly, we were disappointed and wished we had spent the money on 2 regular cruises rather than one river cruise. Read Less

Great way to see Europe! Trip was well organized, service on board was top notch, and the staff, from top to bottom, was friendly, happy and incredibly motivated. Food was well presented with a wide variety of offerings, and delicious. Wine was great and we learned a lot about the different varieties along our route. We booked the pre-embarkation days in Amsterdam, but our flight from the US to Amsterdam was delayed 24 hours, so we missed one of the days. Viking was very responsive to our plight and made arrangements to help us with our late arrival. Embarkation was very easy. The ship was so easy to get around (as opposed to a giant cruise ship). We especially enjoyed the top deck and/or the lounge on those rainy or chilly days. We enjoyed virtually every port of call, each shore excursion, and especially the time that we were able to explore on our own. The local guides were, for the most part, exceptional. Having a guide that has lived in the area for most or all of their lives made the tours that much more authentic. They shared more info than just the standard tourist blabber. We actually learned so much about each port and the history that went along with it. Absolutely the best way to experience several different countries. We would absolutely go again. The only question is what part of the world to see next! Read Less

The cruise was my dream because after 42 years , I finally Retired and i wanted to cruise the Danube ,Main and the Rhine river, also it was our 35 year anniversary . This cruise time frame was just right for me because you only have to unpack 1 time. The show pace on the river is just what i needed to slow down, and RELAX...the Veranda stateroom # 207 was perfect. We explored the town by attending the Danube Folk Ensemble that night we got there. The next day was the start of my RELAXING cruise with city tour and ,of course, The Budapest Thermal Bath. The ship layout was easy, beautiful and comfortable. We had a lot of choices to eat a meal , on the Aquavit Terrace, in front or in the main restaurant , and plenty to eat . Excellent meal prepared according to our day destination or you can order what is on the menu......Beer and Wine was also excellent....The venture of going through 46 Locks was my favorite experience along with just sitting in the front of the ship to enjoy the beautiful sunsets or sitting on the balcony of your room with a Gin and tonic watching the scenery going bye...... All the ports was an experience to explore , especially, the town of WERTHEIM, Germany, my favorite.... . My wife and i really enjoyed ourselves and were spoiled by All the staff, what a Treat....I will never forget this River Cruise with Viking Cruise........ Read Less

We like a small ship experience and heard good things about Viking. They did not disappoint. Fellow travelers were well-traveled and interesting but low key. The food was excellent and plentiful with lots of options. The dining room staff and room stewards were very professional. The tour director and other staff handled any little snags smoothly. Hotel stays were in lovely facilities and conveniently located. The on-board lectures were interesting and the shore excursions well planned. The bus transport was efficient. We knew we'd have a greeter at the Bucharest airport but we especially appreciated the staff member meeting us at the Budapest airport for departure help. I can't think of anything they could do to improve this cruise. While we generally prefer to make our own plans and arrangements and travel independently, we were glad we selected this group travel for Eastern Europe with its many languages, currencies, etc. Read Less

Our Eastern European cruise along the Danube was fabulous from start to finish and everything in between. Viking representatives were waiting for us at the airport and gave us a lovely informative tour on our way to the Hilton. When we arrived, more representatives came outside to greet us, take our luggage in and explained the itinerary to us. The next day we went on a city tour of Buda and Pest in the morning and asked the driver of the coach to let us off in town so we could explore more of it on our own, instead of going back to the hotel. We had just been on another tour where we spent time in the castle area where the Hilton is located so wanted to see some other areas. The next day we checked out of the hotel and boarded the coach to embark the ship. They had a lovely lunch ready for us as the rooms weren't quite ready, as the previous tour group had disembarked that morning. We were very happy with our room and found it to have plenty of space for the 2 of us. The heated floors in the bathroom were a nice touch. We loved having a balcony and spent lots of time on it enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The entire staff of the Embla were professional, friendly, and would do absolutely anything to make your stay special. Our tour director, Sonja, was especially attentive, and was incredibly organized and saw that everything on the ship ran smoothly. The meals were delicious and they were very generous with the wine! The ship was spacious, bright and spotlessly clean and because of the floor to ceiling windows, anywhere you chose to sit you had a wonderful view. We met some great people and always looked forward to getting together for dinner and sharing stories of what we did that day. We enjoyed the included daily excursions and especially enjoyed having coffee and cake in the home of a family in Croatia. All in all, we had a truly wonderful time and are left with many happy memories. The only thing that could be improved on in our opinion, was the connecting flight within Europe where we had to take 2 flights via Prague from Frankfurt to Budapest whereas there was a direct flight with Lufthansa. We feel that this shouldn't have happened as we paid for the flights many months in advance. Aside from this issue, we were extremely happy with our experience with Viking. Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise, but it CERTAINLY won't be our last! We've done several ocean cruises on different lines, but we hit the jackpot on our first river cruise. We sailed from Bucharest, Romania to Amsterdam with the most impressive crew we've ever encountered. When we told the waiter during our first meal that my wife has a shellfish allergy, he immediately brought over the Maitre d' who not only took my wife's order for that and subsequent meals, ensuring no entre she wanted contained something she shouldn't eat, but he typically served them as well. The Concierge was equally exceptional. When my laptop computer 'died' during the cruise, she took it into the next port of call and had it repaired while my wife and I were on a shore excursion. The entire crew was the epitome of outstanding customer service! Our cabin was always spotless, the food superb. Shore excursions were well thought out and masterfully executed. No detail was too small to be overlooked. An absolutely phenomenal experience! Read Less
