We picked this cruise for our honeymoon because it went to Honduras and Belize which we had never been to before. While booking, we were excited about the free at sea options, we picked the beverage package and either the $50 to dining or WiFi (can’t remember). None of that mattered though because once we boarded, we didn’t have the drink package or anything else. We went to guest services and they said that was an issue with the internet services and that they couldn’t do anything about it. I emailed NCL about it once we got back and they haven’t contacted me. It was all just very impersonal, service was just okay. No one even congratulated us on our wedding. On Royal Caribbean, we always had a good time talking with our stateroom steward and dining room servers, but we didn’t have that kind of bond with any of the staff on the Breakaway. The food at the included restaurants was slightly better than Royal Caribbean. We did not pay for any extra food or shows. I thought it was irritating that you had to pay more for so many of the shows. I also hated that you had to reserve a spot at many of the shows because they booked up so early! The pool was incredibly tiny on deck which made our 2 days at sea less enjoyable and not having the drink package which we selected also did not help. It was easy to disembark the ship at the ports and we had the most fun on our excursions off the boat during the cruise. One of our excursions was cancelled while we were waiting on site for the boat to take us snorkeling in Harvest Caye. We got our money back, but I was looking forward to snorkeling on the barrier reef and it was irritating that it was cancelled so last second. All in all, the cruise was just ok but impersonal. NCL needs to work on their guest/ customer service. I would not cruise with them again. Read Less

ROOMS Toilets wouldn't work almost the entire week. We didn't know from one hour to the next if it worked or not. We would always first flush to see if it worked and if so go. If not, then we would travel to another part of the ship to use the restroom. If you forgot to flush first, and it didn't work, then we would be on the phone with guest services asking them to manually flush our toilet. This was a daily issue, and from our understanding with our entire floor. The shower was flooded one day, and we hadn't even used it yet that day. TV remote didn't work. The steward brought us a new one, and that one would turn the TV on and off by itself. I kept looking to see if there was a button stuck (like the power button), but none were stuck. I had to take the batteries out to get it to stop turning it off and on. Now, the room steward was the best part of our trip. He was friendly, helpful and really had great attention to detail with everything. My whole family looked forward to talking to him every day, and yes, he remembered everyone's name. FOOD The food was terrible at best. At the buffet, none of it was ever either cold when it should have been (like with milk) or hot when it should have been (like a 'fresh' hamburger with cheese sitting on top that hasn't melted even a little bit). They had a great selection, but after literally trying a little of everything, it all tasted nasty. The only thing that was reliable was the bacon, but you had to look around at different sections to find the one that had the bacon actually cooked and not raw. Waiting for 45 minutes at O'Sheehan's restaurant when there were open tables and booths available, and saw about 10 -15 employees working the dining area. Once we sat down they started seating people in the area that has been empty for the last 45 minutes. Service was terrible. Ordered food and drinks, he brought them out and never came back. In fact, when wife went to ask if we could get more drinks they told her to sit down they will be right there. 15 minutes later someone came up to get us more drinks. Someone else brought out the food. No one else came back to our table. The restaurants (Savor, Taste and the Manhattan Room) dining was mostly the same food, but with a few additions. Those additions were really good though. The New York Strip was perfect. Everything else we tried for breakfast or dinner was the exact same food you can get at the buffet. And what's with the frozen cod? I have been to many seafood restaurants that serve fish and chips, and the fish is actually fish, not the stuff you get from the freezer section of the local grocery store. Mine were in a elongated perfectly shaped triangle (just like you get from the grocery store). I tried it in O'Sheehans, and at Savor and it was the same both places. Very disappointed. Also, what was disappointing was that the menus didn't change except for two nights where they added a couple dishes to the same old menu. The service was good in the buffet and the other restaurants, except for O'Sheehans. The only downfall was that it took almost an hour to get your food once you ordered it. O'Sheehans took over an hour and a half. POOL AND ACTIVITIES We were really looking forward to enjoying the pool, only to realize that all the drinkers were going to dominate the pool the entire cruise. It was always really loud, everyone sat around the edges of the pool with their drinks in hand, yelling to talk to each other. This only made everything even louder. Out of 5 slides, only 3 worked the entire cruise, and those 3 were closed most of the cruise. They were open, but the short time frames made it hard to be able to use. We went to get food one day, and checked to see if they were open on our way. They had just opened, so we grabbed a bite and went over to the slides only to see that they were closed. The rockwall and the ropes course were the same way. They were closed most of the cruise. Read Less

I chose this cruise because Mr Trump said I couldn’t go to Cuba, and I needed to fill the space. Best thing about the cruise was that I was in shorts 24x7, 7 days a week. Nice! Second best thing was the speciality restaurants. We went to teppanyaki, la cucina, and moderno. Fantastic food and service. Teppanyaki had the added benefit of providing entertainment. Entertainment was not the best. For the most part it was a lot too racy. We did enjoy the resident comic and the escape from the big top game. The Savor and Taste restaurants weren’t good. Almost like they sent someone up to the buffet on deck 15 to get your order. We just cut out the middleman, and ate at the buffet when we weren’t at the better restaurants. Cigarette smoke was very prevalent in the mid ship atrium area. It kind of made that whole area a smoking zone. Norwegian needs better exhaust fans. This was almost as bad as the art auction. The auction I went to was absolutely one of the most disingenuous events I’ve ever attended. It’s my belief that the auctioneer had a degree in snake oil sales. I think Princess does a much better job on shore excursion organization. With Norwegian it’s “get off the boat and find your sign.” I appreciate the pre-excursion prep that princess does. Cabin bathroom was great - storage was not so great. We had a balcony cabin. Internet was horrible - especially for the price. Loved the 20 dollar laundry special. Our cabin steward was the best! I spent too much money on this vacation to have a just OK cruise, but that is what it was Read Less

A friend recommended it, my first cruise, it was average experience. Disappointed in the staff as it pertained to our maintenance issue.quality of food on the buffet was disappointing, the dining rooms had more quality food. The pool area was over taken by a younger crowd, the sexy legs contest turned into a raunchy chip and dale act. The music was loud and made it difficult to talk near the pool area. Some if the staff was polite and accomidating others got rude and short on some occasions it seemed they were put out by our group sitting at a table for any length if home, the port in Hondorus was disappointing, my wife utilized the spa services and said it was excellent, same with the fitness area. The specialty restaurants were good but not great as they had been told to me, the quality of food was not what I expected for the added cost. Read Less

I am a frequent cruiser and this was my first and last time cruising on NCL. I have never experienced such an awful experience cruising including having cruised on Carnival. I am enormously disappointed with the cruise experience aboard NCL! From the moment we embarked on the Breakaway the experience was poor. The gangway wasn’t positioned anywhere near the entrance to the ship and 89 year old grandmother had to make the enormously long walk. The crew members miserable and not friendly at all. This was my first cruise in 16 years that the staff weren’t friendly or happy to be on board. The food was absolutely horrible and lacked variety or flavor. The service in the dinning rooms was lackluster. Dinner on the first night in the Manhattan took just about three hours and every other night about two hours. None of the dinning room staff were attentive or accommodating. The toilets in all three cabins failed to flush and continuously got clogged. Guest services wasn’t nice and we had to call them multiple times daily before maintenance was dispatched to fix the toilets. Their response was that their own staff cabins clogged too. The shows in the theater and the comedy was awful and not entertaining. On the last night of the cruise we went to guest services to confirm our transfer to the airport which we booked with NCL while booking the cruise but was told that didn’t have our reservation and were not able to book us on one. We were left stranded at the cruise port to fend for ourselves. Again I and none of my family will EVER cruise on NCL again and will return to Royal Caribbean. Read Less

This was my first cruise experience and I must say, I’m extremely pleased! I traveled with my 65 yr old mom, 83 yr old grandma and 38 yr old sister. There was something to do for all of us. We participated in at least one shore excursion at each port with a level 1 or level 2 activity level rating. If you stayed on the ship, there was always some form of entertainment in the Atrium to keep you laughing. I loved especially the games with the couples. So fun! We also saw two broadway type shows- Burn the Floor and Rock of Ages that were excellent for the whole family! On top of the entertainment, NCL has phenomenal customer service. All of the crew greet you as you’re walking down the halls. They are big on ensuring that you remain “germ free” by constantly offering you sprays of hand-sanitizers (“Washy Washy” is their signature greeting) or by offering cool wash cloths whenever you re-board the ship from a port. There was never garbage on the floor anywhere either - Which is a feat in itself considering there are so many people on the boat! Our cruise director, Paquito, and the rest of the staff kept the energy level high from morning until night letting us know when it was clear to get off the ship at a port, updating us on that day’s events on the cruise, or while hosting a variety of games in the Atrium or on the pool deck. The fitness center was top of the line with relevant equipment of every kind including treadmills and elliptical machines, a spinning room and weight training area! They also offering group fitness classes 4 days in the week. My sis and I took Spinning and ran around the upper level track most mornings with the sunrise. Embarkation and Disembarkation at every port went very smoothly - especially considering we had thousands of customers on the boat. The food was also amazing at all of the complimentary and specialty restaurants. We ate at the Ocean Blue, La Cucina and Le Bistro. Everyone was so attentive and hospitable. The food was delicious and always included dessert!! Overall this was an experience my family and I look forward to repeating in the near future!!! Read Less

For starters this was my first cruise and my wife's 4th, and not to mention it was our honeymoon. From the beginning the pool and hot tub was full with college aged people, which was not a huge problem until I actually wanted to spend at least 30 mins with my wife . We never got the chance in 7 days. Second, we purchased the drink package but at any of the outdoor serving areas I was passed over by the staff for the 1/2 clothed women in their swimming attire. The service was very slow at some restaurants and took up to 30 mins to receive one drink. We spent a lot of our savings to have a nice Norwegian cruise (my first & last with this cruise line) . Last, the ports were OK but not very accommodating at a few ports. We eventually found a "adults only" section that we soon found out were overtaken by teens or younger. I'd have to rate this trip low but the one on one with my new bride was priceless. Read Less

Where to start....the entertainment was lacking, the comedians were not funny at all and appeared lazy and disinterested in their acts. The magician did a few card tricks that I have seen multiple times before and then he was finished, no real magic tricks just some bad humor. There was only one good show, Burn The Floor. The pool deck was a joke (there should be another pool and less slides), there was no where to go, the hot tubs were over capacity and no one would move to allow anyone else to use them. The behavior was lewd and crude with no one on the waitstaff addressing, there were children present and what was allowed to go on was offensive. The sit-down restaurants closing for lunch service at 1:30pm is ridiculous as they should have been open longer. I do not have the time to list all of the issues I have with the buffet, beyond it was gross, a mess and overcrowded all of the time. The main areas of the ship at all times of the day were a mess and needed cleaned. The entire cruise we felt the ship was short-staffed. My family would joke that every time we would ask someone for something we would be told "no", never has this happened to us before on a cruise. Most of the staff was not very friendly and we felt like they were doing us a favor the entire time we were on the cruise. We have never in the past gotten sick during a cruise and all of my family fell ill during this trip and we believe it is a direct result of the lack of cleanliness of the ship. We had to deal with teenagers running around the ship without any guidance and overly intoxicated people and never did we witness any of the staff taking charge and resolving any situations. We selected an excursion in Mexico and were never told that it was the rainy season, so when we went on our day trip we did not have any rainwear and were caught in downpours without any protection which resulted in my camera getting ruined. The time available in port should have longer since we only made four stops during the cruise. We constantly saw and smelled marijuana being smoked during the cruise with no staff doing anything about it (I still cannot figure out how it was on the boat to begin with). This trip with NCL honestly did not feel like an event, as other cruises we have taken in the past, but more like a depressing stay at a seedy motel. Read Less

It was supposed to be a family vacation, but for me it was a nightmare. The entire staff were very rude. When we went to the restaurants, the servers will rush my order. Everything was rush, rush, rush! the room was like being in a closet, the shower was plugged up, there was water everywhere in the bathroom, you can go swimming in there. The pool was so small it's a joke, my sons kiddie pool was bigger. The food was terrible, the same food everywhere, the buffet, the restaurants. Most of the time it tasted re-heated. nasty! So just to say you will eat the same food over and over again the menu never changed, and that goes for all their restaurants. Before disembarkation time, my family and I were getting ready to leave, when all of a suddenly my cabin door open, it was the cleaner. He put a stop on the door keeping the door wide open, while other passenger walked by and looking in while I was putting on my shoes, THANK GOODNESS I was already dressed!! these were his words" you have to get out" can you imagine this, he threw us out of the room! very very rude!!! Three years ago, while on the Escape, we bought a Cruise Next certificate and we had to use it! After some research we decided on this ship because it was similar to the Escape, which we all loved, but with a different itinerary. My family consists of me, 44, husband, 45, two boys, 12 & 10. My 12 yo is less than a month from turning 13. Our stateroom, 10874 was small, but laid out nice and we never felt too cramped. We all had space to relax. I never had a balcony before and it was wonderful. Most days I woke up before anyone else, so I was able to slip out to the balcony with my book and relax while my family snoozed away. My kids went to Splash Academy every night except one (we thought they’d enjoy the magician/comedian). Even my 12 year old liked going. We would check them in and have a nice dinner and see the show. Since they were “dolphins” they were able to sign themselves out after two hours if they were bored or tired. It worked out great! In Roatan, we booked the Dolphin Encounter through Norwegian. We were taken by van along with 16 others to Anthony’s Key resort. Once there, our group was split in half and we had a 30 encounter with a dolphin and her trainer. Though it was was a wonderful excursion, with great pictures. Harvest Caye was spent on the beach. The pool, while huge was very crowded and I feel like some people had too many and were being obnoxious. My husband and 12 yo did the zip line course and both said it was great. In Costa Maya, we booked Maya Chan on our own. It is a private resort with a max of 80 guests. We had the best day there and would plan other cruses just to go back! We stayed on the boat in Cozumel so the kids could go on the waterslides, but sadly, only one was open. We enjoyed the shows, especially Rock of Ages, which I saw on broadway. It is a but raunchy and several people left with their kids in the middle, despite warnings in many places it was 18+ The food was really good, especially Teppenyaki and the meal during Wine Lovers (another highlight). I got the thermal spa pass and enjoyed spending an hour or so there every day, only the first evening it felt crowded, after that, I was usually in the hot tub all by myself! Overall a great week! The crew - all of them - were friendly, professional, knowledgeable and helpful. The head chef was great; he showed care, consideration and understanding for my vegan companion's dietary needs, and was genuinely interested in our dining experience. He even explained how she could use the signage color coding to determine vegan vs non-vegan food offerings. Speaking of which - the Breakaway has the best dining experience I've had in over 10 years and 15+ cruises. The variety, taste, quality and presentation was fantastic no matter if we ate in the buffet or any of the specialty restaurants. We had a 2-person occupancy balcony room that was more than adequate for our needs. The bed, however, was very firm - fine for me but too hard for my Significant Other. Our cabin steward also made our cruising experience excellent. I cannot say enough about how wonderful her service was. There was plenty of entertainment options on-board the ship, along with activities for adults, young adults and children. [The kids and teens will love deck 16 aft - water slides, obstacle course, I ran into several of the "unseen staff" - the engineers, maintenance personnel, etc. - thanks to my insomnia. They were all professional, friendly and helpful. They even gave me great tips on shore locations, ship events, etc. The art auction staff was very helpful and pleasant. They were incredibly helpful with information on appraisals for my existing art purchases. [My only "complaint" - can you please stop pushing the Peter Max artwork? Please???? ;-)] The ship appeared to be well maintained, clean and organized, with just the right level of lighting throughout. There were plenty of shore excursions and port shopping. [Unfortunately, I cannot comment with any authority on the shore excursions as I didn't take any this trip - I was taking a "complete rest" vacation cruise for a change.] There were a couple minor complaints: 1. This is the first ship I've been on where there were no locker rooms/showers available for users of the gym. I was not the only passenger that commented on the lack of shower facilities at the gym. 2. The H2O adult-only deck needs shade - desperately! This deck area is awash in sun - too much sun. [This was area that other passengers commented upon; makes this deck area undesirable.] 3. Jimmy Buffet's seemed like a neglected afterthought by the ship's designers when they discovered they had unused deck space. The lack of activities or events there was palpable. And, IMHO, a waste of a great name, trademark brand and NCL investment. No Happy Hour. No "Kid's Only" non-alcoholic events (a pity since Buffet's is located adjacent to the kids recreation area). No special events/tastings/demonstrations/celebrations. Why is it this venue even there if NCL isn't going to take advantage of the Jimmy Buffet "island/laid back/soft partying" experience that is the Jimmy Buffet experience? 4. Bring your own coffee/cold drink container: I forgot to bring my cold drink bottle, so I broke down and bought one from the ship's stores. Someone at NCL needs to find new suppliers for this merchandise. I bought one cold drink cup and its lid broke within 3 hours. A second was defective. The third - exchanged the evening before disembarkation - broke its lid right after leaving the port building. I wouldn't comment if I did something stupid like dropping them, because they would be my fault and problem, not NCL's. But, they all broke on their own accord after little or no use. 5. Disembarkation: This seemed to take much longer than the entire check-in and embarkation process. I noticed that disembarkation was often held up by long pauses as certain people passed through NCL security; NCL Security personnel often had to take 1-2 minutes typing something into the computerized profiles of the just-exited passenger before resuming disembarkation. US Border and Customs Enforcement was not the source of any delays. 6. The safety drill prior to launch: Seemed a bit disorganized compared to the other ships I've cruised, including prior NCL cruises. In summary, these "complaints" are minor; no situation or facility is perfect. The overall experience was excellent. Read Less

Although we had a few not so great meals, most of the food was good. I recommend going to Moderno for breakfast, as it is a much less crowded buffet than Garden. Taste, Savor, and Manhattan Room all share the same menu, however Manhattan Room was my favorite for the atmosphere. Everything was nice and clean, and our room steward came often 3x daily to clean our rooms. They were also a good size. I had the balcony mini sweet which fit me and my 2 siblings very nicely. The entertainment was wonderful; we saw Burn the Floor and Rock of Ages and loved them both! My only complaint was disembarkation- the lines were insane and we almost missed our flight because it took so long. Leave plenty of time if you have an early flight! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it fit our schedule and the ports. I was hesitant because of the size of the ship and the amount of people on board. I was surprised because even with 4000 people, it really never felt crowded. The buffet in the morning was a little hectic but other than that everything ran smoothy. Embarkation and disembarkation was quick and smooth. Getting on and off the ship at ports was also efficient. Lines constantly moved. The cruise overall was nice but nothing gave me the ‘wow’ factor. Service, food, entertainment, activities, cabins, excursions, etc were all average. Our service at Cagneys was exceptional but our service at La Cucina was horrible. Our meal took 2 hours which was ridiculous. Buffet was good for breakfast and lunch. Food and service in Taste and Savor was average. One thing that our group had an issue with was the pool area. We had ‘kids’ ranging 12-21. The main pool is adult only and the kid pool is really kiddy (not really fun for kids over 10). So we were never able to all go in the pool together. I spent my time by the kid pool watching my son be splashed and ran into by small children acting crazy, while my brother and nieces were hanging out by the main pool where all the entertainment was. I understand the need for an adult pool but it should not be the main pool!! I have cruise 3 other cruise lines and have never encountered this problem. The adult pool was off in a secluded area where adults only were able to hang out. The main pool was for families. This was a big disappointment for our group of 8. Also, I noticed a sewer smell on the ship. It was not everywhere but I did smell it horrible in public restrooms and when our toilet seat in our cabin was up. Things were clean but did have a odd smell. Entertainment was disappointing. Burn The Floor was horrible. Boring and unentertaining. Rock of Ages was much better but was very long. Overall the cruise was nice but I would not cruise Norwegian again. I think you get a better experience for your money on other cruise lines. Read Less

I have been on over 35 cruises my second in two years on the Breakaway. FOOD The food was still good, however it really irks me that they have done away with Lobster night. Also seemed to be a lot more nickel and diming the customers. ROOM Our room steward was the worst I have ever experienced. After 2 straight mornings of him running the vacuum in the hall at 8 am, I asked him to why he was doing it so early and not waiting until more passengers were out of their rooms. He told me because it was dirty, I pointed out that it could wait. He also argued with me regarding that I ordered distilled water even after I showed him the email confirmation. I complained the phone did not work, he said he would take care of it. I checked later that day and it still did not work, so I asked him and he said he fixed it. I told him he did not and told him to follow me back to the room to show him it did not work. Friends of ours 2 rooms down, said he broke their son’s glasses that were laying on the bed. Yes they should not have been left on the bed, but he could at least own up to it. He forgot to leave them towels and when they called him, he said he was off duty, talk about terrible customer service! EXCURSION In Roatan, we did the ultimate resort for a day, what a nightmare. There was a strike and the road was blocked the driver turned around and almost got t-boned. He then took us on a one lane dirt road up a mountain, with cars and trucks coming the other way. All of us in the van asked him to take us back to the ship, which he refused. We got there after an hour and half, he told us he would pick us up an hour early. The service was terrible, we had to wait 45 minutes for drinks and they were not very busy. They also warned us about sand flies, so we used off and did not even go the beach, just used the upper pool which was high above the beach. My wife got 11 bites anyway. When we left, we were half way back to the ship, he had to turn around for 2 more passengers, we get there and there are 6 more, but only room for 4, and there was another van coming in 10 minutes. We should never had to go back for any of them. We complained to the excursion desk, I told them I didn’t want any compensation, but rather they needed to know the terrible experience to drop the excursion. They listened and then told us that we had our allotted time, I explained we did not since we were an hour late getting there and picked up and hour early. Again terrible customer service. Bottom line the service has declined! Read Less

I will try to be brief and to the point. First the hits 1. Embarkation was very smooth. You go in by groups and can be enjoying the buffet by 12:30. 2. The entertainment is very good. The "Rock of Ages is killing it, however it is not appropriate for children or guests who are easily offended by sexual innuendo and scantly clad dancers. Burn the floor is excellent though I recommend their show in the Manhattan room, and it is only 30 minutes and the numbers are fast paced. The game shows are great but do depend on the craziness of the guests.I did not see the velvet show. The comedians were simply ok, same ole jokes about cruisers. The magician was very entertaining as he uses shy guests as examples. 3. Food was mediocre to just ok. I found nothing outstanding. I did not try the pay restaurants because why pay twice for food? 4. Service was again ok. I had very nice servers in the Manhattan room, Rihzel and Jeffrey were awesome. Other than that nothing special. 5. Ports Rotaan was fun, Harvest caye useless, Coste Maya a little seaweedy, and Cozumel was awesome, I went to an adventure park and snorkel for three hours. 6. Debarkation was again very smooth, off the ship in less than an hour. Read Less

We were on the Western Caribbean Cruise to Honduras, Belize, Costa Maya and Cozumel. We had a great cruise. The only trouble spots were embarking and disembarking the boat. We stood in very long lines for a very long time and almost missed our flight home. The boat was also very crowded. I couldn’t believe there were only 2 small pools on the boat. We were barely able to get in the water with everyone on board. Other than that, the staff was great, the shows we saw were very good and our excursions were really fun. We had good and bad food experiences. I highly recommend Teppanyaki restaurant. It’s not complimentary but worth it for the food and entertainment. Wasabi made us the worst sushi we have ever had so you might want to avoid that one. Our rooms were very nice. Room service fixed up our room up to 3 times a day without us asking. Every time we left the room we came back to a clean room. It was so nice. Read Less

My husband decided to give NCL a try as we had never cruised the line before and wanted to try something different. We have cruised on several different lines but usually book on Carnival as the kids like them the best. On this trip we left the kids at home and it was just my husband and I. Embarkation was at Port Miami and although we arrived on the later side the lines were crazy busy compared to what we are used to with Carnival. We found our room, dropped off our bags and went to get a bite to eat. The buffet was crazy busy as expected on embarkation day. We tried the Irish pub but it to was impossibly busy. We did manage to grab a quick snack back at the buffet on attempt number two. The muster drill was indoors and fairly painless. We booked mini suite #9210. We found the room to be far away from everything and there was no real quick or easy way to get to it from any of the stairs or elevators. The room was clean and nicely decorated but quite small and the balcony was tiny. I would say the room was about the same size as a regular carnival balcony room and the balcony was about half the size on a regular carnival balcony. Due to the balconies size I did not find the balcony very relaxing and we spent very little time out there. The room had a decent size couch and had plenty of counter top and cupboard space. The closet area however was quite a bit smaller that we are used to, it was fine for a couple but I think if we had the kids it would have been very tight. The shower area in the bathroom of the mini suite had body jets, the shower itself was longer but it wasn't very wide. The vanity had two sinks and a hand soap dispenser witch was very nice to have instead of a bar of soap. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I think I have ever slept on EVER! I peeked at the mattress and it was old and very tired looking. I have had other cruise ship mattresses that were uncomfortable but this one was by far the worst. Both my husband and myself were waking up in the middle of the night and waking up sore each morning. The ship itself was clean and a really nice looking ship. They did a very good job decorating this ship. We found the boat very disjointed and it didn't have a very good flow. I booked the two shows online before the trip and also The Brazilian Steakhouse. I guess I misunderstood the concept of Free Style cursing because I found it to be the complete opposite of freeing. I didn't realize you needed to book ahead for everything food related except the buffet. I really don't like the idea of having to make reservations or keep a rigid schedule while on vacation, in fact it's the last thing I want to to. The best food we had on the boat was at the Brazilian Steakhouse, nothing else was particularity great and the deserts were all pretty pathetic. We ended up only eating in the dining room 1 time during our 7 day cruise because we couldn't get reservations at a reasonable time on any of the other days. That turned out to be completely OK though because the dining room was a complete let down. The main dining room (only visit) was not great by any means and the service was sub par. We sat for quite sometime before being greeted and we gave up on getting our deserts and left after waiting for about 25 minutes for them. The food was OK but not great. We mostly ended up stuck eating at the buffet witch was just OK. We did eat at the noodle bar twice witch was also just OK. The service the first time we eat there was fantastic, the best we had during the whole cruse but it was sub par the second time. We managed to get in and eat lunch once at the Irish Pud and it was OK as well, the service not so much. We probably eat only a third as much as we normally do on a cruise, I guess some would call that a good thing LOL. We missed not having the variety of stage shows that we have become used to on other cruise lines but the two complementary shows they do offer were spectacular! They were in a totally different league than other shows and I would strongly recommend making reservations to both shows. The theater was not as comfortable or as nice looking as other theaters on other boats but the quality of the shows made up for that. My husband did the rope course and enjoyed it. Only two of the four watersides were open during the cruise which was a let down. This was a summer cruise on a big boat so it was very busy and hard to get turns doing most of the activities. We used the arcade a few times as well as the bowling and the fuse ball. We looked in the shops a few times but didn't find anything of interest. I was quite frankly shocked however when I needed to purchase an early unexpected emergency "woman's" product while on the ship and they did not have any of the kind needed for use during swimming/bathing suit situations. We ordered drinks at a few of the bars and definitely enjoyed the whiskey bar drinks the most. We found it difficult to get a drink on the ship away from the bars. There were very few servers walking around the pool and lounge areas serving drinks. I assume this is because many of the passengers on the ship have the free drink package and so it's no conducive to their bottom line to make drinks readily available. We however didn't have the drink package and found it annoying that we had to go seek out a bar every time we wanted a drink. The 2 shore excursions we booked via the cruise line were quite good and easy to book via the TV in our room. On NCL's private island the food was not included, we eat at the Land shark restaurant witch was overpriced with crappy service. Debarkation was the easiest we have experienced so far on any cruise. My husband and I are pretty easy going travelers and we had a good time overall on this cruise. There wasn't any thing (aside from the beds) on this cruise that was particularity bad there was just some room for improvements in some areas and the whole "freestyle" cruising thing is not really our style on vacationing. We prefer more freedom and flexibility while on vacation, we don't want to have to make reservations or have set times. Read Less

The frustrating: Beginning at embarkation, things were just rough. The people checking us in were unfriendly, and our keys to our rooms were not correct. Once on board, the main water slides were not working (the entire week), the adult only pool was closed (the entire week), and customer service was deplorable. Customer service was not only rude to me, but I heard them be very rude to several other passengers. The entertainment was not family friendly although it was advertised as Cirque Dreams when we booked. One show was 18+ and the other was a burlesque/cabaret. Also, no more towel animals. The first 24 hours, our toilet quit flushing 4 separate times. The good: We were in a mini-suite balcony - 13228. It was a very nice-sized room for our family of four. It offered a king bed, a couch that made out into a single bed, and a murphy bed that folded down from the ceiling. The bathroom was nice sized and the shower was huge and had great pressure. We enjoyed dining on this NCL a little more than in the past. The best entertainment we've seen on 4 NCL cruises was Sy Norman's Pourhouse band. Fantastic singers, nice people. Read Less

We were a family of 4. When researching this vacation, we found that the ship was attractive, the amenities were attractive and price was competitive. There were also some extra perks included. We have cruised with Royal Caribbean before so this is our point of comparison. While the ship itself was nice (see pros below), there were many disappointing aspects: - the pool was too small to enjoy it. for the size of the ship, it should have been double the current size - the sun deck did not have enough space so it felt crowded all the time and not enough shady areas - the freestyle dining was a plus. no set times to work around. however, the complimentary options were sub par compared to other ships. they seem to focus on specialty dining and enticing customers to spend more to dine at these restaurants. This can be expensive for a family of 4. it also reduces the value of the vacation price. - we found many employees not as friendly as we have experienced in other ships. they seem to be somewhat overworked or not well trained. our stateroom steward was not friendly at all and seemed annoyed by our requests. One time, we came back relatively early from excursion (around 2 pm) and wanted to shower and then head out to lunch on the ship. He had not made the room yet and when I let him that we will heading out, he said that this would be after his shift is done and he will not be able to do it. We had left the cabin the entire morning and he did not have the time to clean the room. He was very rude and this showed me both lack of customer service skills and perhaps stress of being overworked. - the entertainment on board was not great. We enjoyed the dance and the magic shows but that's about it. many shows are not appropriate for children and some shows cost extra which again reduces the value as with dining. On at sea days, there were not many things to do so we spent them relaxing instead - The TV in the cabin has barely 5 or 6 channels. Most of them are news. No kids channels. Very disappointing - Long lines to customer service and shore excursion desks - Too much sale attempts by marketing staff for casino, games, next cruise...etc taking time from other activities. Some of the pros: - Ship itself is nice. The touchscreens are useful to get you around. Elevators were fast - Many staff were welcoming and helpful especially at the restaurants (though again some of them were not as courteous) - Photographers were very good. We got many nice portrait pictures. Prices were outrageous but we had an offer for a package of 25 photos which we were happy with - Rope course was amazing. Nice to be up there while ship is sailing. The plank was thrilling. Zip line was short but fun - Water slides were fun (though 2 out of 4 were not functional throughout the trip) - When coming back from port day, staff were welcoming with cold water and lemonade as well as wet face towels which was nice and appreciated - The itinerary was excellent. We enjoyed Roatan (a must destination for beach/snorkeling), Harvest Key (my wife's favorite: clean beach, large pool, many activities), Costa Maya (nice waterpark), and Cozumel (nice clear kayak and snorkeling experience though not as pretty as Roatan) Overall, this was our first Norwegian cruise and we all agreed that we will likely go back to Royal Caribbean in the future Read Less

My husband and I have taken several cruises over the past few years. This was the first time with Norwegian. We were absolutely blow away with the top notch service we received. It began with embarkation, easy, quick and with a warm smile. This set the tone for our week. The food was absolutely delicious. We tried everything on the menu throughout our trip and we were never disappointed. Our room steward Emanuel went overboard (no pun) to be sure our room was always stocked neat and clean. Alexandrea our restaurant hostess was so pleasant. She was very Intune to all the details. We needed to ask for nothing because the crew was always a step ahead and somehow predicted our needs. How they do I we will never know but they made this the MOST relaxing and truly enjoyable trip we have ever taken. As soon as we got home we made a few phone calls to family and friends to plan a 2020 trip. We will never take another cruise with any other line going forward. BEST VACATION EVER!!!! Read Less

So I got an account on CC and started reading some reviews and really dont understand what people are complaining about. This is our 1st time on Breakaway, we been on Getaway twice so we knew everything already and seen it all before. Same ship pretty much. So clearly we love Norwegian. We went on Royal Oasis in between but came back to NCL. Its always just my fiance I, no kids, rarely another couple. We pay to get away. Just relax and enjoy. I swear I dont even think about money or work. Everyone will make money, time will never be made so enjoy it. If you have to pay a little extra, you'll be thankful later for the memories. We got the packages, the dining, wifi, drinks, discounts. We didnt even make it to all 3 dining options we could have had, left my phone on airplane mode the whole time except twice onshore to check on the dogs, we aren't pissed. We had a blast, we made friends, we made memories, and yes, we spent money that we weren't planning on, big deal, well worth it. I highly recommend to leave your babies at home, put the phones down, and have some fun. 35/32 M/F Read Less

We got the port around 12pm and it was madness with all the porters taking luggage and people trying to figure out where to go. Eventually, we got inside and started the lines to check in. It was probably a process of 30 minutes. It was a bit unorganized because some lines were going the wrong way and then people had to turn around and do another line. Once on the ship, we went to the cabin and it was dirty. I called the cleaning service and there was no answer. I finally was able to speak with operator and they said that the cabins were not ready yet and i had to wait for the announcement that would notify that cabins were clean and ready to enter. I think the announcement was made around 1:30pm. Everyone in the atrium cheered when the announcement was made. I had requested for them to separate the beds and they didn't. I called cleaning again no answer and finally after trying 5 times to the operator, they said to request that at turn down service. I went tour the spa facilities and the tour was very informative and i ended up choosing to get the spa week pass. I think the spa week pass was worth it because it's a great place to unwind and getaway from the other thousand passengers on board. The people is the front desk of the spa were always polite and friendly. The gym was also nice and it had everything you need for a good workout. When it was evening, we had to request again for turn down to separate the beds and they did. The first night, we went to Taste restaurant, that has the same menus as Savor and the Manhattan Room which are the gourmet formal complimentary restaurants. I brought a bottle of alcohol to drink and we were seated quickly. I asked for an ice bucket to cool the alcohol and glasses. They took about 8 minutes to bring the ice bucket and about 15 minutes to bring clean glasses. It was a bit irritating. The food and the service was good and friendly. Later that night, when i went back to the room and i had requested the cleaning guy to bring a pitcher of ice water to have for the night and he said to call room service. Note: i have done this on previous cruises including norwegian. I called room service and they wanted to charge $7.95 for bringing me a pitcher of water. That seems ridiculous, so now i know that you have to bring your own cups of water to the room before going to sleep or pay for the water in the mini fridge. The first day at port, it was chaos to get off the ship. Very bad organization. This needs work. There were lines starting at the 6th floor to get down to the 4th floor. The other days, the process was smoother luckily. I got a massage one of the days at port. I asked for a hot stone massage. Aside from the massage starting 15 minutes later because the crew had to do drills, I was going with the flow. The masseuse assessed what i needed. I requested for some scented oil to breathe before the massage started and she said she was allergic to lavender. So i said that was fine and she let me inhale some citrus lime scent. She basically gave me a swedish massage and used the hot stones maybe 25% of the time in the whole massage. She didn't even leave them on my back. I asked her in the beginning when she was just massaging, when she was going to use the stones and she said the stones were too hot to use. That was not what i was expecting. Then her cell phone rang towards the end twice. After the massage, I notified the front desk about these issues and they apologized. 2 days later, the front desk said they gave me a small discount for that- it was $14 off which is not much considering the 20% tip that is automatically added on and she said that the phone ringing was the masseuse's smart watch letting her know the time. are you kidding me!?! I was not in the mood to argue, but that's not good service and i hope they correct this. The private island in belize is very nice and the pool is huge. the beach also has lots of chairs. Just one issue- there is no wifi! How do you go to an island these days and have no wifi provided? I also discovered on the 2nd day the spice h20 (i didn't remember what is was from a previous cruise) is actually the free adults area to get sun, drink and there's a small water feature and jacuzzis to cool off in. It was the same as when I was on the Norwegian escape. When I had inquired about adults only areas before the cruise, the person from norwegian cruise lines only mentioned the vibe beach club and that it had fee. Read Less

I am a long standing Latitudes member, and love Norwegian cruises, until my recent time aboard the Breakaway! Service was awful, staff were disengaged, officers were publicly screaming at the staff, and things just seemed disorganized overall. Stateroom service was nearly completely absent, and things always had to be asked for multiple times. When speaking to guest services, we were brushed off. Buffet areas were poorly stocked and taken care of, even for sail-away. Previously reserved onboard events were cancelled without notice to passengers, and when asking for details we were made to feel we were bothering them. Shore excursions were nice, and the itinerary I would suggest certainly. Salsa and Salsa in cozumel, Belize Spice Farm and Botanical Gardens, Boss underwater Adventures in Roatan, and the Mayan Wellness Retreat in Cancun were all amazing! I'm hoping for better aboard the Encore in January, or I may be saying goodbye to NCL for good! :( Read Less

I think everyone on this boat is going to need to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous session after departure! As inviting as an all-inclusive drink pass is... it seemed to be everything this ship was about. Server: "Can I get you another drink?" Patron: "How about a bottle of water or ice tea?" Server: "Ice Tea is 3 floors up - so how about another drink? And a bottle of water will cost you extra? And don't forget the service charge." Only I wish the conversation sounded as nice as I just typed. Ridiculous. So here's the nitty-gritty of it all. If you have been on another cruise, are traveling with just a spouse (not your kids), enjoy good food and friendly conversation this boat is not for you. If you have a ton of kids, could care less about food or prices, and love to drink this go for it. The main areas of the ship were just okay - needs some touching up in general - carpet separating, curtains were torn, etc, etc, etc. I do not like how they have the entertainment venues closed off - you have to "go inside" to see the action. I would have loved to walk by and see a few comedy bits but I would have had to go into an overcrowded room to do so. Are you kidding? The casino is the hub of the boat - everything passes through the casino - seriously. Great just feed the gambling addiction - which by the way no one wins after day 3. So don't try. The main lobby is an afterthought and nothing special. Where's the grandness I was hearing about? Onto the Cabin. We had a Spa Mini-Suite with Balcony. Still the smallest room and balcony I've ever seen in my life. Nice shower, but that's about all. Not to mention you can't even leave your phone in your room to charge b/c the power goes out once you leave. Agh! The bed was the most uncomfortable, overworn bed I've ever slept on. It was terrible. My husband and I were tripping on each other every second we were in there. The sink only provided hot water - which I suppose is better than cold! DINING!! OH GOD DON'T GET ME STARTED! Besides for SPECIALITY RESTAURANTS forget about it. The service is TERRIBLE in the main dining room and the menu is even worse. Servers disappearing - refusal to provide ice tea because it was too far to go - food recycled from the f%$#ing buffet. It was sooo bad. They don't change up the breakfast and lunch menus and what the have is like a standard Applebee's. I won't even type upscale because it's not. So so so bad. I'm so disappointed. I paid a lot - ALOT - of money for this cruise and I'm back and starving for a decent meal. GRRR... I'M SO ANGRY ABOUT THIS! Entertainment - Rock of Ages and the 80s house band are amazing! Catch a show this is another bright spot on our vacation! Service - Poor! Just poor! Except in the Vibe Beach Club. Service there is excellent. If you are an adult and cruising with a loved one over 21 get Vibe Beach Club passes well well worth it! Ports & Shore Excursions - Where do I begin. The excursions provided by the excursions desk are terrible. Nothing like what they were! No pictures, the desk doesn't even know what's going on. Very disappointing! Read Less
