We chose this cruise because it fit our schedule and the ports. I was hesitant because of the size of the ship and the amount of people on board. I was surprised because even with 4000 people, it really never felt crowded. The buffet in the morning was a little hectic but other than that everything ran smoothy. Embarkation and disembarkation was quick and smooth. Getting on and off the ship at ports was also efficient. Lines constantly moved. The cruise overall was nice but nothing gave me the ‘wow’ factor. Service, food, entertainment, activities, cabins, excursions, etc were all average. Our service at Cagneys was exceptional but our service at La Cucina was horrible. Our meal took 2 hours which was ridiculous. Buffet was good for breakfast and lunch. Food and service in Taste and Savor was average. One thing that our group had an issue with was the pool area. We had ‘kids’ ranging 12-21. The main pool is adult only and the kid pool is really kiddy (not really fun for kids over 10). So we were never able to all go in the pool together. I spent my time by the kid pool watching my son be splashed and ran into by small children acting crazy, while my brother and nieces were hanging out by the main pool where all the entertainment was. I understand the need for an adult pool but it should not be the main pool!! I have cruise 3 other cruise lines and have never encountered this problem. The adult pool was off in a secluded area where adults only were able to hang out. The main pool was for families. This was a big disappointment for our group of 8. Also, I noticed a sewer smell on the ship. It was not everywhere but I did smell it horrible in public restrooms and when our toilet seat in our cabin was up. Things were clean but did have a odd smell. Entertainment was disappointing. Burn The Floor was horrible. Boring and unentertaining. Rock of Ages was much better but was very long. Overall the cruise was nice but I would not cruise Norwegian again. I think you get a better experience for your money on other cruise lines. Read Less

I have been on over 35 cruises my second in two years on the Breakaway. FOOD The food was still good, however it really irks me that they have done away with Lobster night. Also seemed to be a lot more nickel and diming the customers. ROOM Our room steward was the worst I have ever experienced. After 2 straight mornings of him running the vacuum in the hall at 8 am, I asked him to why he was doing it so early and not waiting until more passengers were out of their rooms. He told me because it was dirty, I pointed out that it could wait. He also argued with me regarding that I ordered distilled water even after I showed him the email confirmation. I complained the phone did not work, he said he would take care of it. I checked later that day and it still did not work, so I asked him and he said he fixed it. I told him he did not and told him to follow me back to the room to show him it did not work. Friends of ours 2 rooms down, said he broke their son’s glasses that were laying on the bed. Yes they should not have been left on the bed, but he could at least own up to it. He forgot to leave them towels and when they called him, he said he was off duty, talk about terrible customer service! EXCURSION In Roatan, we did the ultimate resort for a day, what a nightmare. There was a strike and the road was blocked the driver turned around and almost got t-boned. He then took us on a one lane dirt road up a mountain, with cars and trucks coming the other way. All of us in the van asked him to take us back to the ship, which he refused. We got there after an hour and half, he told us he would pick us up an hour early. The service was terrible, we had to wait 45 minutes for drinks and they were not very busy. They also warned us about sand flies, so we used off and did not even go the beach, just used the upper pool which was high above the beach. My wife got 11 bites anyway. When we left, we were half way back to the ship, he had to turn around for 2 more passengers, we get there and there are 6 more, but only room for 4, and there was another van coming in 10 minutes. We should never had to go back for any of them. We complained to the excursion desk, I told them I didn’t want any compensation, but rather they needed to know the terrible experience to drop the excursion. They listened and then told us that we had our allotted time, I explained we did not since we were an hour late getting there and picked up and hour early. Again terrible customer service. Bottom line the service has declined! Read Less

I will try to be brief and to the point. First the hits 1. Embarkation was very smooth. You go in by groups and can be enjoying the buffet by 12:30. 2. The entertainment is very good. The "Rock of Ages is killing it, however it is not appropriate for children or guests who are easily offended by sexual innuendo and scantly clad dancers. Burn the floor is excellent though I recommend their show in the Manhattan room, and it is only 30 minutes and the numbers are fast paced. The game shows are great but do depend on the craziness of the guests.I did not see the velvet show. The comedians were simply ok, same ole jokes about cruisers. The magician was very entertaining as he uses shy guests as examples. 3. Food was mediocre to just ok. I found nothing outstanding. I did not try the pay restaurants because why pay twice for food? 4. Service was again ok. I had very nice servers in the Manhattan room, Rihzel and Jeffrey were awesome. Other than that nothing special. 5. Ports Rotaan was fun, Harvest caye useless, Coste Maya a little seaweedy, and Cozumel was awesome, I went to an adventure park and snorkel for three hours. 6. Debarkation was again very smooth, off the ship in less than an hour. Read Less

We were on the Western Caribbean Cruise to Honduras, Belize, Costa Maya and Cozumel. We had a great cruise. The only trouble spots were embarking and disembarking the boat. We stood in very long lines for a very long time and almost missed our flight home. The boat was also very crowded. I couldn’t believe there were only 2 small pools on the boat. We were barely able to get in the water with everyone on board. Other than that, the staff was great, the shows we saw were very good and our excursions were really fun. We had good and bad food experiences. I highly recommend Teppanyaki restaurant. It’s not complimentary but worth it for the food and entertainment. Wasabi made us the worst sushi we have ever had so you might want to avoid that one. Our rooms were very nice. Room service fixed up our room up to 3 times a day without us asking. Every time we left the room we came back to a clean room. It was so nice. Read Less

The frustrating: Beginning at embarkation, things were just rough. The people checking us in were unfriendly, and our keys to our rooms were not correct. Once on board, the main water slides were not working (the entire week), the adult only pool was closed (the entire week), and customer service was deplorable. Customer service was not only rude to me, but I heard them be very rude to several other passengers. The entertainment was not family friendly although it was advertised as Cirque Dreams when we booked. One show was 18+ and the other was a burlesque/cabaret. Also, no more towel animals. The first 24 hours, our toilet quit flushing 4 separate times. The good: We were in a mini-suite balcony - 13228. It was a very nice-sized room for our family of four. It offered a king bed, a couch that made out into a single bed, and a murphy bed that folded down from the ceiling. The bathroom was nice sized and the shower was huge and had great pressure. We enjoyed dining on this NCL a little more than in the past. The best entertainment we've seen on 4 NCL cruises was Sy Norman's Pourhouse band. Fantastic singers, nice people. Read Less

We were a family of 4. When researching this vacation, we found that the ship was attractive, the amenities were attractive and price was competitive. There were also some extra perks included. We have cruised with Royal Caribbean before so this is our point of comparison. While the ship itself was nice (see pros below), there were many disappointing aspects: - the pool was too small to enjoy it. for the size of the ship, it should have been double the current size - the sun deck did not have enough space so it felt crowded all the time and not enough shady areas - the freestyle dining was a plus. no set times to work around. however, the complimentary options were sub par compared to other ships. they seem to focus on specialty dining and enticing customers to spend more to dine at these restaurants. This can be expensive for a family of 4. it also reduces the value of the vacation price. - we found many employees not as friendly as we have experienced in other ships. they seem to be somewhat overworked or not well trained. our stateroom steward was not friendly at all and seemed annoyed by our requests. One time, we came back relatively early from excursion (around 2 pm) and wanted to shower and then head out to lunch on the ship. He had not made the room yet and when I let him that we will heading out, he said that this would be after his shift is done and he will not be able to do it. We had left the cabin the entire morning and he did not have the time to clean the room. He was very rude and this showed me both lack of customer service skills and perhaps stress of being overworked. - the entertainment on board was not great. We enjoyed the dance and the magic shows but that's about it. many shows are not appropriate for children and some shows cost extra which again reduces the value as with dining. On at sea days, there were not many things to do so we spent them relaxing instead - The TV in the cabin has barely 5 or 6 channels. Most of them are news. No kids channels. Very disappointing - Long lines to customer service and shore excursion desks - Too much sale attempts by marketing staff for casino, games, next cruise...etc taking time from other activities. Some of the pros: - Ship itself is nice. The touchscreens are useful to get you around. Elevators were fast - Many staff were welcoming and helpful especially at the restaurants (though again some of them were not as courteous) - Photographers were very good. We got many nice portrait pictures. Prices were outrageous but we had an offer for a package of 25 photos which we were happy with - Rope course was amazing. Nice to be up there while ship is sailing. The plank was thrilling. Zip line was short but fun - Water slides were fun (though 2 out of 4 were not functional throughout the trip) - When coming back from port day, staff were welcoming with cold water and lemonade as well as wet face towels which was nice and appreciated - The itinerary was excellent. We enjoyed Roatan (a must destination for beach/snorkeling), Harvest Key (my wife's favorite: clean beach, large pool, many activities), Costa Maya (nice waterpark), and Cozumel (nice clear kayak and snorkeling experience though not as pretty as Roatan) Overall, this was our first Norwegian cruise and we all agreed that we will likely go back to Royal Caribbean in the future Read Less

My husband and I have taken several cruises over the past few years. This was the first time with Norwegian. We were absolutely blow away with the top notch service we received. It began with embarkation, easy, quick and with a warm smile. This set the tone for our week. The food was absolutely delicious. We tried everything on the menu throughout our trip and we were never disappointed. Our room steward Emanuel went overboard (no pun) to be sure our room was always stocked neat and clean. Alexandrea our restaurant hostess was so pleasant. She was very Intune to all the details. We needed to ask for nothing because the crew was always a step ahead and somehow predicted our needs. How they do I we will never know but they made this the MOST relaxing and truly enjoyable trip we have ever taken. As soon as we got home we made a few phone calls to family and friends to plan a 2020 trip. We will never take another cruise with any other line going forward. BEST VACATION EVER!!!! Read Less

So I got an account on CC and started reading some reviews and really dont understand what people are complaining about. This is our 1st time on Breakaway, we been on Getaway twice so we knew everything already and seen it all before. Same ship pretty much. So clearly we love Norwegian. We went on Royal Oasis in between but came back to NCL. Its always just my fiance I, no kids, rarely another couple. We pay to get away. Just relax and enjoy. I swear I dont even think about money or work. Everyone will make money, time will never be made so enjoy it. If you have to pay a little extra, you'll be thankful later for the memories. We got the packages, the dining, wifi, drinks, discounts. We didnt even make it to all 3 dining options we could have had, left my phone on airplane mode the whole time except twice onshore to check on the dogs, we aren't pissed. We had a blast, we made friends, we made memories, and yes, we spent money that we weren't planning on, big deal, well worth it. I highly recommend to leave your babies at home, put the phones down, and have some fun. 35/32 M/F Read Less

We got the port around 12pm and it was madness with all the porters taking luggage and people trying to figure out where to go. Eventually, we got inside and started the lines to check in. It was probably a process of 30 minutes. It was a bit unorganized because some lines were going the wrong way and then people had to turn around and do another line. Once on the ship, we went to the cabin and it was dirty. I called the cleaning service and there was no answer. I finally was able to speak with operator and they said that the cabins were not ready yet and i had to wait for the announcement that would notify that cabins were clean and ready to enter. I think the announcement was made around 1:30pm. Everyone in the atrium cheered when the announcement was made. I had requested for them to separate the beds and they didn't. I called cleaning again no answer and finally after trying 5 times to the operator, they said to request that at turn down service. I went tour the spa facilities and the tour was very informative and i ended up choosing to get the spa week pass. I think the spa week pass was worth it because it's a great place to unwind and getaway from the other thousand passengers on board. The people is the front desk of the spa were always polite and friendly. The gym was also nice and it had everything you need for a good workout. When it was evening, we had to request again for turn down to separate the beds and they did. The first night, we went to Taste restaurant, that has the same menus as Savor and the Manhattan Room which are the gourmet formal complimentary restaurants. I brought a bottle of alcohol to drink and we were seated quickly. I asked for an ice bucket to cool the alcohol and glasses. They took about 8 minutes to bring the ice bucket and about 15 minutes to bring clean glasses. It was a bit irritating. The food and the service was good and friendly. Later that night, when i went back to the room and i had requested the cleaning guy to bring a pitcher of ice water to have for the night and he said to call room service. Note: i have done this on previous cruises including norwegian. I called room service and they wanted to charge $7.95 for bringing me a pitcher of water. That seems ridiculous, so now i know that you have to bring your own cups of water to the room before going to sleep or pay for the water in the mini fridge. The first day at port, it was chaos to get off the ship. Very bad organization. This needs work. There were lines starting at the 6th floor to get down to the 4th floor. The other days, the process was smoother luckily. I got a massage one of the days at port. I asked for a hot stone massage. Aside from the massage starting 15 minutes later because the crew had to do drills, I was going with the flow. The masseuse assessed what i needed. I requested for some scented oil to breathe before the massage started and she said she was allergic to lavender. So i said that was fine and she let me inhale some citrus lime scent. She basically gave me a swedish massage and used the hot stones maybe 25% of the time in the whole massage. She didn't even leave them on my back. I asked her in the beginning when she was just massaging, when she was going to use the stones and she said the stones were too hot to use. That was not what i was expecting. Then her cell phone rang towards the end twice. After the massage, I notified the front desk about these issues and they apologized. 2 days later, the front desk said they gave me a small discount for that- it was $14 off which is not much considering the 20% tip that is automatically added on and she said that the phone ringing was the masseuse's smart watch letting her know the time. are you kidding me!?! I was not in the mood to argue, but that's not good service and i hope they correct this. The private island in belize is very nice and the pool is huge. the beach also has lots of chairs. Just one issue- there is no wifi! How do you go to an island these days and have no wifi provided? I also discovered on the 2nd day the spice h20 (i didn't remember what is was from a previous cruise) is actually the free adults area to get sun, drink and there's a small water feature and jacuzzis to cool off in. It was the same as when I was on the Norwegian escape. When I had inquired about adults only areas before the cruise, the person from norwegian cruise lines only mentioned the vibe beach club and that it had fee. Read Less

I am a long standing Latitudes member, and love Norwegian cruises, until my recent time aboard the Breakaway! Service was awful, staff were disengaged, officers were publicly screaming at the staff, and things just seemed disorganized overall. Stateroom service was nearly completely absent, and things always had to be asked for multiple times. When speaking to guest services, we were brushed off. Buffet areas were poorly stocked and taken care of, even for sail-away. Previously reserved onboard events were cancelled without notice to passengers, and when asking for details we were made to feel we were bothering them. Shore excursions were nice, and the itinerary I would suggest certainly. Salsa and Salsa in cozumel, Belize Spice Farm and Botanical Gardens, Boss underwater Adventures in Roatan, and the Mayan Wellness Retreat in Cancun were all amazing! I'm hoping for better aboard the Encore in January, or I may be saying goodbye to NCL for good! :( Read Less

I think everyone on this boat is going to need to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous session after departure! As inviting as an all-inclusive drink pass is... it seemed to be everything this ship was about. Server: "Can I get you another drink?" Patron: "How about a bottle of water or ice tea?" Server: "Ice Tea is 3 floors up - so how about another drink? And a bottle of water will cost you extra? And don't forget the service charge." Only I wish the conversation sounded as nice as I just typed. Ridiculous. So here's the nitty-gritty of it all. If you have been on another cruise, are traveling with just a spouse (not your kids), enjoy good food and friendly conversation this boat is not for you. If you have a ton of kids, could care less about food or prices, and love to drink this go for it. The main areas of the ship were just okay - needs some touching up in general - carpet separating, curtains were torn, etc, etc, etc. I do not like how they have the entertainment venues closed off - you have to "go inside" to see the action. I would have loved to walk by and see a few comedy bits but I would have had to go into an overcrowded room to do so. Are you kidding? The casino is the hub of the boat - everything passes through the casino - seriously. Great just feed the gambling addiction - which by the way no one wins after day 3. So don't try. The main lobby is an afterthought and nothing special. Where's the grandness I was hearing about? Onto the Cabin. We had a Spa Mini-Suite with Balcony. Still the smallest room and balcony I've ever seen in my life. Nice shower, but that's about all. Not to mention you can't even leave your phone in your room to charge b/c the power goes out once you leave. Agh! The bed was the most uncomfortable, overworn bed I've ever slept on. It was terrible. My husband and I were tripping on each other every second we were in there. The sink only provided hot water - which I suppose is better than cold! DINING!! OH GOD DON'T GET ME STARTED! Besides for SPECIALITY RESTAURANTS forget about it. The service is TERRIBLE in the main dining room and the menu is even worse. Servers disappearing - refusal to provide ice tea because it was too far to go - food recycled from the f%$#ing buffet. It was sooo bad. They don't change up the breakfast and lunch menus and what the have is like a standard Applebee's. I won't even type upscale because it's not. So so so bad. I'm so disappointed. I paid a lot - ALOT - of money for this cruise and I'm back and starving for a decent meal. GRRR... I'M SO ANGRY ABOUT THIS! Entertainment - Rock of Ages and the 80s house band are amazing! Catch a show this is another bright spot on our vacation! Service - Poor! Just poor! Except in the Vibe Beach Club. Service there is excellent. If you are an adult and cruising with a loved one over 21 get Vibe Beach Club passes well well worth it! Ports & Shore Excursions - Where do I begin. The excursions provided by the excursions desk are terrible. Nothing like what they were! No pictures, the desk doesn't even know what's going on. Very disappointing! Read Less

Chose cruise due to dates & decided to revisit Western Caribbean due to ports. So many positives about this cruise. Food was excellent. We don't cruise for the food but it was really good, seasoned well and good variety. Buffet was great, even fish on buffet was delish. Salad bar was awesome. No way out flavors or items but a good mix and tried some new foods. We liked Manhattan a lot & wished we made it back there. Taste was good but reminded me of other cruise line dining, hectic and loud. We also enjoyed the Irish Pub (O'Sheenan's). Try the spinach/artichoke dip. Yum. Our cabin was great & our room stewardess was bubbly and pleasant. Very happy with both. Entertainment was the BEST. OMG, Syd Norman's is super fun. The live bands were surprisingly good. Went every night and loved it. What a pleasant surprise. Also, James Sullivan at Shakers Martini bar was excellent. Entertainment a step above other cruise lines. Went to Burn the Floor & Rock of Ages. Both good. But the BEST was Wine Lovers the Musical. Well worth the extra cost and Highly Recommend this very pleasant play and dining experience. So impressed. Ports were all fine. Snorkeling in Roatan the best. Mexico not so much. Now for the negatives: Bartenders were horrible for the most part. Unhappy & slow. Mostly males who took forever mixing a drink. Everyone complained about wait time. I waited 10 mins often for service and walked away several times w/o a drink. Beverage Manager needs to staff better and more tenders at most bars. Other negative was NCL allowing children in 18+ areas. NCL is so strict about other things but did not enforce age limits. & YOU CANNOT count on parents to do the right thing anymore. This should be strictly adhered to by cruise line. Child whined throughout Rock of Ages bc she was bored and mother didn't remove her. Children in Syd Norman under 18. And worst of all young (7/8) were in Howl at the Moon with pure vulgarity going on. More crude then necessary and I'm not usually sensitive to stuff. Parents let children rule this ship. Running everywhere, having meltdowns in halls, etc. Not really an NCL problem there but we do not see this on other cruise lines. Overall the ship offered many things but area's were very narrow and crowded. I have to give Breakaway an overall 4 due to Entertainment/food and cabin. Also played Trivia once in Syd Normans and had fun. We would cruise NCL again b/c of port selection and cleanliness of ship. Female dining staff and Garden Café waiters were all good and pleasant. Embarkment and disembarkment could both improve a little. Self assist slower than normal. Also, too many extra pay items. Read Less

We chose this cruise based upon itinerary and value. We had not been to the Southwestern Caribbean and wanted a late summer vacation before school started in August. I had read mixed reviews on the ship but went in with an open mind. I also knew that this would be full of families and children. We boarded in Miami and it was a very smooth and quick process. IF you are bringing wine onboard, a tip is to walk right by the wine check in station so that you don't pay the stupid NCL corkage fee. For some reason, NCL makes you walk the length of the ship (outside) before entering. After walking through just a few areas inside of the ship, you begin to smell very stale cigarette smoke odor. Then as you continue and pass the 3 deck open area midship (decks 6, 7, 8) flanked on all sides by the casino on deck 7. The stench is extremely prevalent and hits you in the face. Why ANY cruise line would design a casino open to a major part of the ship is beyond stupid. If I had to get to the Aft or Forward Lobby (elevator banks) I decided to go outside on The Waterfront and bypass the center of the ship. That in itself is why I will never book any NCL ship in this class. Overall experience was poor and we will not be going back to NCL again. Positives: The food in the main dining rooms was very good. Previously, our only other NCL experience had very bad food and led us to discover (need for) specialty restaurant dining which we do now on every cruise. I was very pleasantly surprised. The service in each dining room is not consistent but pretty good overall. We did breakfast in Savor each morning after experiencing the jammed buffet on day 1. The service and food during breakfast was very good. The specialty dining this time was just average, I liked the mix but it was nothing great. We ate at Le Bistro, Cagney's, and La Cucina. Each was nice but just average food and service. I loved Wine Lovers The Musical and highly recommend that. The Waterfront is excellent quiet area to sit and relax however they put the life boats in front of it so the view of the ocean is somewhat impaired. The disembarkation process of self assist worked very well and the face recognition technology for customs worked very well. Line up at 6:45 am for a 7:30 am release so that you do not have to wait down the deck 7 corridor within the casino. Negatives: I mentioned the smell. Also the layout of the ship just seemed to be difficult to follow. The elevators are very thin and dark. The buffet had the same things mostly for breakfast and lunch so we chose the dining room for breakfast. We did not eat dinner at the buffet but they did have theme nights which looked interesting but the food did not look very appetizing. During the lunch and breakfast times, the buffet is extremely crowded but the servers do a decent job of keeping up the tables. The pool deck seemed to smaller than other ships we have sailed and so also crowded. The H2O Zone at the aft was a cool place but the large open air bar there is a smoking area which makes the entire area a smoking area. The soaking pool area there was closed the entire cruise to repair tiles but the hot tub was working - if you could tolerate the cigars and smoke from the adjacent bar. The sports area was big and the slides looked fun however with the thousands of teens and kids onboard, I was not going to wait in those lines. We only had two sea days so I could have participated on port days but did not. The entertainment was also not too good. Burn the Floor was pretty good but Rock of Ages was way too loud and I grew up with those songs. I had to leave after 5 minutes. Many others did as well. Some of the live music around the ship was decent but with the ship feeling so crowded and having to sit in some areas dealing with the stale smoke odor was disappointing. The demographic of this particular sailing had many teens and families blowing off steam before school starts so most public areas were very loud, and difficult to enjoy the live music options. The gym is also very poorly designed with very limited machines, very small free weight area. The cardio section across the hall facing outward had a decent amount of treadmills and elliptical machines but don't expect to work out in the morning on a day at sea. This ship is too crowded and gym too small to accommodate that amount of people. I would think twice about booking this ship due to the odor, design, and crowded feeling in most every venue. The food was above average but the other negatives really provided us with a disappointing experience. Read Less

We had a great trip on the Breakaway. Normally I just read reviews, and never provide them -- but since I spent so much time researching on cruise critic I decided i should 'pay it forward' and provide a review too! Ship is beautiful. It is very well laid out -- where most of the entertainment and restaurants are on the 5th-8th deck. This made it very easy to navigate around the ship. Our cabin was on the 14th floor, which was great because it was just one flight of stairs up to the pool area and garden cafe (buffet). We had an easy time getting on the ship (however there is a lot of walking , so if you have any family members that have problems walking a mile, be sure to arrange assistance). Disembarking the ship was a breeze! Much better than I anticipated. Pros: Lay out of the ship, staff was very good and friendly. We had the drink package and specialty dining package. I'm not sure if it was a great value, but it was awesome to be able to grab a drink and not worry about it. Ship was clean and well decorated. Cons: If you are an avid fitness fan, you may be disappointed. The Jogging track is small (12 laps = a mile) and to make things worse it is on a part of the ship that is essentially a necessary throughway to get to another area of the ship. Hence there were always people strolling along on the track - I can't blame them they needed to walk there to go to where they needed to go, but very poor planning on the ship design. I poked my head into the gym area... was crowded with machines and there did not appear to be any 'floor area' to stretch /yoga, do free weights. All I saw was machines. Kids club did not work out for us. I have 11 year old that was worried about being with little kids. When we checked in we were assured that would not be the case b/c the 10-12 year olds would have separate program. So of course the first time she checked in ,she was in a group of 3-12 year olds. When she sent me an SOS , I came and got her. So she was literally there less than one hour. When I picked her up and asked about it I was told this was b/c it was a port day and on port days the kids are all together. This really is not ok in my mind. Most 11 year olds do not want to play with random 3-4 year olds. My daughter refused to go back. Dining was good. We ate breakfast almost every day at the Garden cafe. With one exception, it was generally not too crowed. We did have breakfast at Jimmy Buffet restaurant one day, it was nice because of the view and not crowded, but the selection was very limited compared to the Garden cafe. For our specialty dining we went to Teppanyaki, Cagney's and La Cucina. All were very good, but Cagney's was the stand out. OMG- so good! We also ate at Taste, Savor, Manhattan Room and O'Sheehans. The first 3 serve most of the same stuff. All was good. Service was generally great. I would definitely cruise on Norwegian again on the Breakaway. We were actually concerned about the large size of the ship, but it was actually quite manageable. Loved it! Read Less

Alright first the Cons: I’ve been on breakaways sister ship the getaway 4 times and i know both ships are identical but their not. Breakaway wasn’t put together as well as her sister ship. What i mean is noise. I booked a studio cabin 11563 it was horrific. First thing is every morning at 6am the cleaning staff would start working on the floor. This included an access door that slammed so hard that my room would shake. And this door would slam shut almost every 10 seconds. I couldn’t understand it and counted the seconds in between.. The only conclusion i came up with is that the cabin stewards were intentionally going through this door to wake people up and get them out of their rooms so they could begin cleaning them. I mean horrifying loud. My other nightmare were these young kids who were booked in the studio cabins. Another nightmare. The punk in 11567 would invite his juvenile friends from across the ship to enter his cabin after 1am for a late night party. Leaving the studio cabins acess door unlocked for easy entry. I could hear every word until 4am where i called security twice that week. The other time i called security was when after midnight one night i could hear a girl screaming like she was being assaulted right down my hall. I’ve cruised 16 times on ncl and loyal to them as a platinum cruiser, but i will never return to breakaway. The pros: everything after was awesome. The specialty restaurants were excellent, i ate in both cagneys & la cucina incredibly delicious. Every day was sunny and bright and the pool packed with people. The bartenders were efficient and kind. I suggest giving them tips as this will insure a quick return on your money. They really appreciate it and most don’t tip. Atrium had great shows which were entertaining and fun as the atrium is the heart of the ship so arrive early. Loved all ports of calls except belize, because as a private island i don’t agree having to pay for everything. Ship staff was amazing and the bar manager sent me a bottle of red wine. Read Less

I will start off my saying I have been on multiple cruises but try not to travel in the summer because of the crowds. We had to go in the summer because this was a family vacation and had to go when the kids were off from school We were a family of 15 ranging from 73 down to 7. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. This ship was very crowded but it really didn't seem to be a problem. The pool was very crowded but you were able to find lounge chairs on the upper decks. The kids had a great time on the slides and the rope course. We all had the beverage package and had no trouble getting a drink. Shakers bar had great friendly service. All the staff on the ship were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. We had six connecting rooms and our steward Amit was wonderful. Took great care of all of us. Buffet was very good and we ate in Teppanyaki Moderno and LaCucina and enjoyed them all. The ship was beautiful and very well kept. We all had a wonderful cruise and can't wait to go on another Norwegian cruise. Read Less

Drinks were great...Buffet food was better than dining room if you can believe that The BAD: This was by far the greediest cruise i've ever taken. Nothing is included No bottles of water despite paying for a drink package!! Private islands? Pay for food, drinks etc and at a ridiculous price!!! 4.50 for a bottle of water you must be insane. No buffet nothing at private islands either (Carnival and Royal have it) While most of the staff are friendly and pleasant some of your bartenders especially on the pool deck need customer service training...If they didn't have some kind of nasty attitude they had poor service (1 clown lost my card and decided it was funny Overall I was very disappointed with this cruise... I suggest you look into other cruises which charge less and give you more Read Less

We are Miami locals that took our first cruise with NCL. We booked with an agent and the booking process was painless. The day we set sail was smooth and very well guided. Within an hour we had settled in our room, and had a bite to eat in the main dining halls. We made some last minute entertainment reservations at one of the manned kiosks set up just for the embarkation process. When we returned to our room, the luggage was already delivered. The entire process is very streamlined and pleasant. Dining on the ship is one area that I had hoped would be better. The buffet is large and well stocked with good choices, and the quality is what you would expect from a decent buffet. The main dining rooms and other eating areas are not much better that the buffet fare. The service we received from the dining areas was always next level, top notch. That may have taken a little from the food, as service of this caliber usually comes with top notch food. I recommend steering clear of any "steak" from the complimentary menus. The specialty restaurants are a different story. The food is much better and is worth adding to your vacation package. I had a well cooked, and perfectly marbled Ribeye from Cagney's, and had dinner twice at Teppanyaki. I have been to a few hibachi style restaurants and both of my meals there were better than what I was used to. The Beverage service was basic but not lacking. We had the premium beverage package and never had to wait long to be served. The bars are well located on the ship, and the servers are generous when making drinks. My wife would rather drink Pepsi than tequila, and found having to wait at the bar for a soft drink to be inconvenient. Our experience was drastically soured by a Bartender in the Headliners venue that was extremely rude to my wife on the second to last evening. His actions seem like a departure to the service culture on board, but it was bad enough to keep us from ever considering NCL in the future. The Ports were not the greatest for me. Living near the beach in South Florida, I don't get too excited about laying in the Sun. I was also travelling with a 6 year old, so some activities were not available to me. Roatan. None of the excursions that I could do with my daughter appealed to me, but knowing that Harvest Caye is a default beach/boat day, I felt compelled to purchase an excursion. We went to Maya Key. The cost to book Maya Key on the ship was much more than the payoff to go, but after forgetting the price, it was a pleasant day. We enjoyed posing for pictures with birds and monkeys, and had a relaxing day on the private island. There is a pool on the island and a sandy beach with chairs. We left the island early to try to walk around the area surrounding the port. I could not walk more than one block away from the secure area without being concerned for my family's safety. I may have been being overprotective, and always try to be open to other cultures, but I don't recommend being a pedestrian outside the Port in Roatan. Harvest Caye was exactly what we thought it would be, but in a good way. I wasn't looking to sit/swim on a beach because I always have easy access to the beach. I do enjoy a day at the beach, and this island is great for this. Get off the boat first to get one of the free chairs under an umbrella and be better off than the ones paying for the distant clamshells. There was a LOT of jellyfish in the area and multiple people were stung, but a large portion of the bay is screened in and much safer, if swimming ouside of this area, stay vigilant. There is a small exhibit showing Macaws and butterflies and local flowers. Nothing mindblowing, but worth seeing. I rented a paddle board and kayak and both were reasonably priced. Fun day, but no reason to make a early return to the ship. Costa Maya is where we decided to do the Mayan Ruins excursion to Chacchoben. We booked through the ship and were whisked away to the ruins (1.5hr ride) in comfort while or guide spoke with us about local culture. The ruins were impressive and we were returned to the port with time to eat and shop. The Port area is not a place for local culture. Everything in the area is built only for cruise ship passengers. Nice, safe, plastic. Cozumel was fun. We wanted to do an exciting excursion, but could not book through ship due to age of our daughter. We were able to find an ATV excursion within 5 minutes that would allow our girl to ride. because they were bending the rules, we were given a private tour (Guide on one machine, wife on another, and my girl and I on the third). We were brought to a mud "playground" and encouraged to have as much fun as we could. Our guide was very warm and friendly and answered all of the questions we could think of. Where we returned the machines was a flea market about 3 blocks North of the port. the vendors sell the same things that are found in the shops at much lower prices. I was able to average a selling price about half the asking price on most items. My advice, say no to ALL tequila tastings. They are delicious, and are hard to say no to. The return day at sea I planned to sleep and relax. My wife made sure that didn't happen and kept the day full of shows and events. It was worth it. If you happen to smoke, there are few places to do so on board. It was so inconvenient to smoke that I actually quit the habit on board. Hopefully that continues, and I will save enough $$$ to pay for next vacation. I summary, the trip was a pleasant experience. If not for the incident with a server so close to the end, it would have been remarkable. I would try to find a better itinerary. During Disembarkation, a passenger fell in front of me and I stopped to help her up. My family continued walking and they were routed to the front of the ship. They rerouted me to the rear and we were unable to find each other going through customs. Make sure that you stay together as a group when traveling, and never depend on cell service. A family set of walkie talkies is a great investment. Read Less

Our extended family cruises together every other year. This was the first time cruising NCL (we previously did Carnival and RC). We booked travel and transport thru NCL. My aunt is disabled and we also registered her with the Access Desk at NCL. Upon arriving for our transport to the port (at the Miami airport) we were informed that they did not have handicapped transport for my aunt. We called the Access Desk (they were closed on Sunday). The NCL workers at the airport informed us that they did have access equipped vans. They had us carry my 80 year old aunt up the narrow stairs of the regular bus. Upon arriving at the terminal we were told that we had to carry her from the bus location to the terminal-it was a bit of a walk. We refused and thankfully had an understanding onsite manager who made an exception and brought a wheelchair from the terminal to the bus. We did not bring my aunt's chair since it does not comply with NCL guidelines (which is normal-we have rented scooters on some of our other cruises). However, the rental chair that we received did not work-and we had to argue with guest services that it didn't (was actually asked if we knew how to use the chair) They finally sent a tech, who discovered/agreed that it didn't work. He found a replacement-but it wasn't the type we had paid for. The ship is nicely appointed and the family room I was in was the most spacious that I have been in. I especially loved the larger bathroom (a must for young children). In general, the dining is the best of any cruiseline. Lots of options and the staff is generally thoughtful. BOOK OCEAN BLUE. If you go, book this restaurant as soon as you are able-the slots went first. It was amazing-went with my husband and our baby (DD was is kids club). Staff here was the BEST of the ship. We booked Cagneys for our group of 12. Food was good-staff was overwhelmed. Had to request multiple times for water and they forgot appetizers for some of our party. We also booked Teppanyaki-if you have children this is a must. Most entertaining staff and food was good. We visited every included restaurant-food was really good. Make sure to do one night at the Manhattan-they include a show and it was amazing. My 8 year loves the apple pie at OSheehans as well. And the staff at SAVOR adored my 1 year old. Entertainment was okay-but not as good as RCL. Activities were okay-best one was the escape room (sign up early). My daughter said the kids club was the best one of any cruiseline. Our room porter (Ariel) was the best. Lost and found was easy to navigate. Gym was much smaller than we have experienced on other lines. The ropes course and zipline were fun-my 8 year old adored it. My 1 year could not get in the pool (even with a cover or swim diaper). For a ship of its size, the lack of pools is shocking. Both times that we tried to do the water slide-it was closed (but it looked fun). Ports-Honduras did an encounter at the monkey sanctuary and beach. Fun. The beach was clean and kid friendly. Animals (monkeys and sloths) were a welcome surprise of fun. Belize-its a private beach which is fun. Lighthouse was closed when we came-bummer since that is what my daughter most wanted to see. Ferry to the mainland is $25 roundtrip. Costa Maya we booked the Mayan Ruins. It was a lot of fun and both of my kids enjoyed it (bring something to entertain them for the 45 min bus trip each way). In Cozumel we booked a horse buggy tour off ship ($60) which was fun. Please note: NCL does not have a separate disembarkation line for access needed guests. Lastly, the day before we departed I went to Guest Services to make sure my aunt's departure would be seamless. Most of our travel group was flying out of Fort Lauderdale while my aunt and cousin were flying out of Miami. We were also leaving earlier than they were. I wanted to ensure that the issues that plagued our arrival would not happen for disembarkation (especially since the bulk of us wouldn't be there to help carry her). The staff verified for 30 minutes and assured us that everything would be okay. On our disembarkation day-while waiting at the airport-we got a frantic call from my aunt that the same issues were plaguing her. She had to complain and get management involved. I would only go on this cruiseline again if it was my family only. If you have an access needed traveling companion please look elsewhere. Read Less

First time cruising Norwegian, the ship offered many dining options and entertainment. Traveled with my with spouse, teen, parents, brother and his girlfriend. We flew into Ft Lauderdale and used Lyft to get from the airport to Miami. We flew in the day before our cruise and stayed at Courtyard Marriott that had a shuttle to the port which was close by. We went to the Rock of Ages show and loved it. I would not recommend bringing children to the show due to explicit scenes and language. We enjoyed eating at Savor for breakfast & dinner, as well as dinner at the Manhattan. My mother, brothers girlfriend, and I enjoyed Canvas by You, we painted a beach with palm trees. We had a family dinner at the Cagney steakhouse on our first night. Service was very slow, our food was cold, and our steaks were not cooked as we ordered them. After that experience we cancelled our other dining reservations we had for the week and stuck with the complimentary options and enjoyed Savor for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Manhattan for dinner and Taste for dinner. The buffet was ok, great to get lemonade, tea, juice & water. Stuck mostly with the carving station, and soups on the buffet, the freshly baked bread station was great. We all loved the port of Roatan. My spouse, teen and I did the Tabyana Beach & snorkel excursion. This was my favorite excursion and port. Beautiful beach, we could snorkel at the beach or swim out to the reef on a guided tour. The people were wonderful, food & drink was great, showers, restrooms, lockers very clean. My parents enjoyed the day shopping at the port, and my brother and girlfriend enjoyed Gumbalimba. We enjoyed the pools at Harvest Caye. My spouse and son enjoyed the water park excursion at Costa Caye and my mother and I enjoyed shopping at the port. Snuba excursion in Cozumel was fun. Enjoyed the spa, pedicures and massage was wonderful on our last day at sea. Disembarkation was smooth, we arranged transport to the airport through Norwegian and were in the first group to get leave after those carrying their own luggage off. Did not like that we had to keep changing the time, we had to change time zones 4 times on the ship and it was confusing. Would have preferred to stay on ship time. Not a lot of communication on port arrival and instructions. Would have been lost without the activities page left each night and the knowledge of how things generally worked from a previous cruise. Staff was great and service in the main dining rooms was great. Read Less

The different courses of our meal were fast and hot. Our family was treated as if we were the only ones on ship. There was always something to entertain us. I would recommend this ship to anyone if they were looking for a great experience and a lot of fun. The shore excursions were a lot of fun. We enjoyed our trip on the catamaran and my nieces enjoyed snorkeling in the beautiful waters of Roatan. We also swam with the sting rays in Cozamel. That was a unique experience. We spend the day on the most beautiful beach in Belize. Read Less

I did zip lining, a resort but that didnt cost anything, visit a Mayan family and dolphin encounter.  I see why people cruise all the time. I would do it again with NCL Breakaway! This time I traveled solo, but next time I would travel with friends and family! Its definately something to experience with others. Read Less

Sailed the Norwegian breakaway a week ago out of Miami and visited Roatan, harvest cay, Costa maya and Cozumel and was very disappointed with the ship and cruise line. We traveled on the celebrity equinox last summer and had a great time, delicious food , great entertainment and great service. At the start of the cruise before boarding there was almost a stampede by a mismanaged and unorganized boarding process, thankfully no one was hurt. The initial buffet on our day of boarding was the usual overcrowded hungry bunch of people hitting the buffet and was expectantly chaotic. During the course of the week we only at at the complimentary restaurants and food venues, which were all horrible, redundant and had very poor service. The menus were basically all the same for all the complimentary restaurants, food was poor quality and the service was horrible. The buffet which we normally enjoy for breakfast and lunch was like being stuck on a floating Golden Corral for a week, inclusive of hamburgers and hotdogs. I visited the specialty restaurants and they appeared better and smelled delicious but was not in a family of fives budget, they were all expensive and unaffordable. While I had paid extra for the premium beverage package, it did not include bottled water and you were not allowed to bring any bottled water onboard. If you take daily meds your choice is disgusting tap water or expensive bottled water. The good points were an amazing “ROCK OF AGES” show and one day for lunch was me sneaking away and getting an amazing cheeseburger in paradise at the Jimmy Buffett’s Margarittaville in which I had to pay extra for. Minor complaints were none of the bars made a good pina colada, bars were overwhelmed, lime, toothpicks, hair and plastic cups in the main pool. Fight at the pool between two drunk females, bikini top lost and both escorted away by ship security. After leaving I was charged approximately $22.00 from one stateroom and $35.00 from our second stateroom for minibar purchases which we did not make, if I had not called and asked for a total I would not have picked up this charge and it would have got lost in the other charges that we incurred during the week. Shore excursions were around a hundred dollars on average per person, no way affordable for a family of five with 4 ports to stop in. Made our own way for a fraction of the cost. The ports: (1) Roatan was our favorite, a round trip cab for $50.00 to paradise beach and hotels, $20.00 each for admission to one of the nicest beaches I was ever on, turquoise water and super fine sand, no eats but plenty of buckets of local beer that were very enjoyable. (2) harvest cay, Belize, NCL’s private island, most of the attractions, such as the zip line and high ropes tour closed due to high winds as were beach umbrellas. Nothing was included like RC does on their private ports, drink package of food. This was another NCL money grab in my opinion. (3) costa maya, our second time there, just stayed in the port shopping area, shopped and a few beers in the complimentary pool. Stayed away from seaweed beaches this time. (4) Cozumel-$40 round trip cab to Mr. Sancho’s resort, paid an all inclusive rate per person, all you can eat drink, beach, chairs, umbrellas, pools were included. The were not stingy on the food or drink, very attentive to your beach needs, I would highly recommend. Returned to Miami very disappointed a swore I would never sail Norwegian Cruise Line ever again, going home to celebrity but would like to try Royal Caribbean. Worst vacation/cruise ever!!! Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the ports of call.... I have sailed on several different cruise line and I must admit that for the money I spent on 2 adults and 2 kids ( close to $6000.00 ) was not really worth it A lot of the staff members are very rude, within 1 hour of boarding 1 female bartender on the 15 deck poolside had a least 8 complaints against her, not a good way to start the cruise.... The rooms were rated at a 7 on a scale of 1-10 and were kept very clean by our steward, he was polite to my family and always addressed me as Mr. Ron and yes I tipped him daily... I think the room service for food is a ripoff And the cafe late night is a joke, dont go their unless u are absolutely dying of hunger.... I also think that the ship is very very tight for its size The pool is standing room only unless ur at a port of call then you can actually swim.. The wait staff is the best... If u buy a drink package buyer be ware, The beverages in ur room are not part of that at all..... And their is an $8.00 convenience charge for room service (BY THE WAY CARNIVAL HAS FREE ROOM SERVICE )... Overall I give NCL a 4 out of 10....... Next cruise will definitely be on another cruise line.... Read Less
