The cruise was chosen as part of travel package. I have cruises before, but this was the worst for the following reasons: - Lack of food choices and repetitive. They serve pasta and spaghetti with light sauce, lack of flavouring - Entertainment all in Spanish (good for South American passengers) - Day of departure (must leave room by 8am) - Restaurants- can not chose where to sit and you get half hour slot to attend restaurant otherwise you will not enter. For instance, number 312 must attend dinner by 7-7:30pm. Furthermore, lido desk 9 all 5 restaurants serve same food - No English Channel on TV - You must pay tips at the end in American dollars, and must be on credit card. Coming from UK we only had debit card -Orange juice is waterly, and jo hot drink throughout the day apart from breakfast and afternoon tea at 4pm - Desk 2 is noisy and you hear music playing. It is annoying to hear at 11pm! Good: -Some islands were beautiful -We had nice guy who did the room -Gym - interior nice Read Less

We chose this cruise to extend our warm weather holiday and because the dates worked. We had just come off a 19 night Ft.Lauderdale - B.A. cruise on the Royal Princess plus a 2 day visit to Iguazu Falls. Your first impression starts at the cruise terminal check in which is disorganized. Once on the ship we were pleasantly surprised at the size of our premium balcony stateroom, but the balcony itself is small and the furniture is old, uncomfortable and soiled looking. We found out the next morning that the bathroom shower is poorly designed and the water leaks all over the floor because the shower curtain is too short. We pointed this out to our harried room steward who said he would have it replaced, but it never was. We used towels to soak up the leaking water every day for our 7 day cruise...how is this more efficient than fixing the shower? Our next disappointment was a the buffet restaurant which was chaos for breakfast and lunch. It is so poorly laid out that each meal turns into a free for all just to get your meal then another free for all to find a table. There seems to be a chronic shortage of seating which made us dread going up to the buffet. On sea days, when everyone is onboard the buffet situation is even worse, so we resorted to the dining room where it was marginally less chaotic for breakfast, but still unpleasant. We chose the early assigned seating for dinner in the dining room because they don’t offer open seating. Dinner was a relief because it was calm and collected and our waiter”Dino” was a Pro. The dinner menu’s were good as was the food quality, but beware that water is not included with dinner unless paid for i.e. bottled water. The wine prices on Costa are slightly less that other Cruise Lines i.e. a bottle of Chianti was $25 whereas the cheapest red wine on a Princess was $32. Aside from our balcony, which was never cleaned, the general condition of the ship was good. The decor could be described as “gaudy” The fitness centre had an adequate number of machines (some defective) but disinfecting wipes were not provided. There is a good sauna in the fitness center’s change room which was a welcome inclusion We usually cruise on Celebrity,Holland America and Princess, so if you are used to any of these lines you will be in for a culture shock. If you can get over it (as we did) you willappreciate the diversity of entertainment which is quite good on Costa, with many lounges,a very large theatre with excellent shows and a nightclub with good bands and dancing every night. Our itinerary along the Brazilian coast involved 3 stops in small ports that requiredtendering for each (one being 1/2 hour in each direction) English is not common on shoreso our general routine was walking around town,a bit of shopping then wifi and a drink allaccomplished with sign language. We both agreed that we would not sail on Costa again, which is a shame, because we felt the staff all worked hard, and the entertainment was good, but they could not make up for the buffet chaos, understaffing, poor ship design, and poor management. A last minute purchase, at the urging of my wife I took the plunge (so to speak) and bought our 14 day Buenos Aires to Rio De Janeiro cruise. By the time I got to the actual purchase pickings were slim and I had to agree to have my cabin selected by the Costa staff. I bought the tickets, and only a few days later got to sit down and read reviews of the Fascinosa. I actually told my wife "I'm prepared to eat the lost $2k, I made a mistake, sorry". But what with anticipation and Rio's carnival looming, she persuaded me to go anyway. One's memory tends to gloss over things later that were a big deal at the time, like the strong smell of excrement in the passageway outside our cabin at all times, The faulty toilet flush mechanism that failed 4 times during a 14 day cruise. Or the gritty feeling underfoot that forced me to demand our steward vacuum the carpet. I don't want this to become an encyclopedia but there is no way to pass on the experience without going into detail. The theatre hosted some splendid live productions, with truly gifted performers and a delightful repertoire. Marred by a self promoting "cruise director" who instructed the audience to give top marks for him. Taken tongue in cheek, this might be excusable but the relentless barrage of juvenile, racially toned "humor" had the audience too embarassed not to applaud. The restaurants were passable, portions were appropriate and well presente, service good. Shore excursions with Costa should be avoided in my opinion. Overpriced and "one size fits all" we were happy that we only signed up for one (Uruguay). Being new to cruising, perhaps I appear harsh but I am reporting what I saw. Alas time prevents me from continuing while things are fresh in my mind, but happily this cruise will eventually be forgotten. Read Less

We chose this cruise, because we wanted to visit a bit warmer places before winter. It was really a great decision. Food was delicious and our service (waiter) was really, really kind. It is always a lot of food to eat and everyone can fine something for himself. We liked activities for children and other things on the ship. We enjoyed every single minute on the cruise. Ports and excursions were well organized. We had no bad experience with disembarkation and embarkation. The ship is beautiful and has everything for a comfortable holiday. The cabin was beautiful and always clean when we come back, so the employees did their job as they should. Everyone was very kind. The children also really enjoyed the holiday. Our daughter, that can speak English, met a lot of friends from different countries, and for her it was also a great experience. we would like to go again to visit other destinations as well- Read Less

On September 23, having just disembarked from MSC Fantasia in Genoa, I took a taxi to Savona (the driver offered me a special price of EUR100) and embarked on Costa Fascinosa, a back-to-back cruise though changing ship. I had bought this second cruise last minute via internet while still on MSC Fantasia. What I got was nothing more than an Outside cabin without balcony that was still available, but paying a very good price. This cruise had a similar but not a same itinerary as the one I just left. Only two ports are repeated (Barcelona and Palma). Simply because I had another spare slot of time in the area before yet another cruise, and another cruise is always a good way to spend time (probably cheaper than simple living on land in Europe). I have previously cruised Costa a lot, but in recent years I preferred MSC which operates almost side by side. It was good to return to see how Costa fare, which I am still familiar with. What differences between the two! Simply put, MSC operates a more mature, more traditional cruise, while still cater to some younger cruisers, but Costa remains still the craziest and noisiest of cruise lines, cater to the youngest. Few cruise lines, if any, has main activities starting near midnight that can last till dawn. The White Night party was the craziest. Practically all passengers join, or like me, at least I had a long look of the action. Even in the main dining room, more than once there were activities of singing and dancing. The Baked Alaska parade was still on. Costa has shows every night, mostly production shows, unlike many competitors which seek cost cutting by presenting Headline Entertainers that may be of doubious standard. The shows were good, always highly energetic, and with real dances well choreographed. I consider the Costa shows among the best, if you like action-packed shows. This ship is smaller than competitor ships but has the largest show lounge of all. My stateroom, a basic Outside on the lowest level, is not bad at all. It is among the most spacious, bigger than similar cabins on RCCL, MSC and NCL. The ship’s hull is the same as the expensive Cunard’s Victoria. House-keeping was very good, and restaurant service was also adequate. For the price, I ought to say that my experience again exceeds my expectation, though I know Costa well, with more than 10 previous cruises earlier. I came with the lowest expectation of the food, but what a surprise! The food is better than RCCL and NCL. It serves a different menu devoted to a different region in Italy everyday (I believe they learned this from MSC). The cooking was more than adequate and on occasion even some pleasant surprises. One of the evenings they serve a menu specially designed by a famous Italian chef, and it was good. The free menu consists of paid choice which can be as simple as Wiener Schnitzel at a few Euro, up to a lobster at EUR25. On the buffet deck, more than once they serve very good local food, even sucking pig appeared, as well as Paella when in Spain. Cost cutting is through table water to be paid for, and even at the buffet they turn off the water as soon as dinner service ends. Tea and Coffee are available only at breakfast. For lunch and dinner you pay for it. So many passengers buy a drinks package as a matter of necessity. In this respect Costa is the meanest of them all (while everyone tries to cut back). For an ultra active cruise that is animated round the clock, Costa is supreme. Guests are mainly Italian and Costa employs several language hostesses who each have their station to answer any questions. Hospitality was good, again better than I expected (I had cruised on this ship, as well as the newest of them all, the Diadema). A satisfactory cruise that is good-valued. I only hope that Costa can spare passengers of the unnecessary ordeal of the emergency drill, which they operate seriously in the hardest way while competitors are more considerate. Was this the aftermath of Concordia? You are expected to put on the jacket and listen to the instructions in 6 languages before you are allowed to retire. The standard itinerary calls on Naples, Palermo, and after a sea day, to Ibiza for a long stay arriving early and sails for Palma de Mallorca at 4am the next day. Ibiza in late September was still active and the weather is fine. A true highlight of this cruise as you can sample Ibiza nigh life. Last port of call to Barcelona winds up the trip of a very standard itinerary. Savona was a convenient home port for embarkation and disembarkation. Read Less

First problem that costa only sent the e tickets 3 days before the cruise after ringing the tour oppertater daily to this. The restaurants have the same menu each day for breakfast lunch and evening with an ever so slight tweak. There was a hot dog burger area, being a vegetarian i requested a veggie burger and was told that I could have one in the designated restaurant that evening with a charge. The options on the menu were poor. Usually on a cruise a slice of pizza as a snack is usually an option, but not with costa an whole pizzas has to be purchased. A second seating option that I asked to have on numerous occasions but was refused, but do not totally understand why as each stop passengers were embarking and disseminating. The cut off time for the self service restaurant was 9.30, therefore one had to eat before this time , if they felt like it or not usually there is somewhere to have a snack if feeling hungry before bed time. The first seating was 6.45 and second seating was 9.15, usually water is served free of charge , but only bottled water was available with a charge. We came back on board late one night as we had a early morning sailing. Every were was closed, the only cold water station was out if water and glasses. We went to the bar at the back of the ship were the staff were clearing away to be totaly ignored by the staff, a young member of staff was very helpful and provided us with water. Also lipstick was found on a drinking mug on another occasion. The staff were entirely rude and missarsble, the were without a smile or greeting. The entertaimment was flat usually there is something for everyone. There were no port talks, no information on port transfers only what was provided by costa at a higher cost. Whilst in our stateroom, there constant interruptions with tanoy announcements. There was not many places on board to have a quiet time to read, it seemed to be constant noise everywhere. We have been with numerous cruise lines and never had an experience like this.We enjoyed our stops and tended to have a meal off board . The only tv channels available were the news channels all other channels were in different languages and only films available were with a charge. It's our first and last cruise with costa and would not recommend it to anyone . Read Less

My first time not on an American cruise ship. I have been on Princess, Celebrity and Seaborne. My husband is Italian so thought we would try Fascinosa out of Savona (Genoa). We got a suite, which gives you the Intenditore all inclusive drinks package and access to the 11 floor dining room, which is fabulous. Great food and service. All for about half price of American cruise lines. We loved the Med cruise especially the stay in Ibiza where we took ferries ourselves to the beaches in Formentera. Very easy to take yourselves to the beaches via ferry. A terrific experience. But yes, it is European. Know that in Naples you can take a cab to almost any site for a private tour! But we enjoyed the tour via Costa in Palermo. We did a mix of taking Costa tours and traveling on our own. In Barcelona it was easy to walk to the shopping areas on our own and just fabulous. 1. Cabin had layer of dust on furniture and carpet hadn't been cleaned in ages. It only got a good clean after complaining - only to be bitten by dust mites. Balcony furniture is in very poor shape and needs replacing. Hair dryer was broken and dangerous with parts exposed. 2. Food is mediocre and often recycled ie desserts available in restaurants the night before are recycled for breakfast the morning after or at tea time. No great variety available and tiny portions in the restaurants. Food sometimes was too salty and inedible. 3. Disastrous customer service where excursions are concerned. Although pre booked and confirmed by email by Costa nobody in the excursion office bothered to inform us that the required minimum for a particular excursion had not been reached and therefore it was cancelled. Ended up spending the day on board in Barcelona as no port wifi was available to be able to view alternative arrangements. Was eventually offered an excursion in a completely different language. Hospitality desk wasn't much help only advising me to take the problem up with the excursion office at 16.30 when the ship left Barcelona at 1700! Nobody dared disturb the tour manager to ask for compensation for the lost part of this cruise and on the last day was made to return to the cash office twice after 45 minutes as tour manager was not available before 7.30am. Local Malta agent SMS-Mondial totally unhelpful with tour leader's phone switched off and unavailable. Subsequent emails were ignored. English speaking rep Gemma promised to speak to tour manager to ask for compensation but studiously avoided me for rest of the cruise not even bothering to give any feedback on the problem. Was more interested in her British clients and my booking an alternative excursion for Marseille which had also been confirmed by Costa by email and subsequently cancelled without notice. Eventually charged me an extra €15 over and above the published price which I took to be Gemma's commission as she asked for the booking to be put on her account! Only got refunded this amount after much toing and froing and much hassle just before disembarking from ship on final day. Gemma also advised me 'to move on and forget about it and relax and enjoy the cruise'..... after it had been completely ruined by Costa themselves! 4. Dance floor was full of infants and toddlers and one had to be careful they were not trodden upon as parents were too busy enjoying themselves to look after their offspring. Absolutely no control over children who ran up and down corridors screaming and shouting. 5. Just before disembarking from ship on the Sunday I was bitten by what seemed to be a flea in the Cheri lounge on deck 5. Had to resort to medical care to get it seen to as the bites were on my right hand and wrist and finger and also on my abdomen and upper left arm. Bites on my wrist became infected. 6. Water is not available during dinner and one is obliged to buy a drinks package for plain water worth €36. If this is ordered by one person in the cabin and there are 2 people in the same cabin they have to be together as the package bought only shows on the cabin card of the person who placed the order. It cannot be split over two cabin cards which is ridiculous seeing as two friends travelling together are not always together all of the time whilst on board. 7. It took 3 days for a table with a decent view to be given to us. One evening we were seated at a table laid for 11 people when it could only hold 8 people comfortably. To add insult to injury we 6 were made to sit facing 5 empty seats whilst trying to eat all squashed up as the maitre d' absolutely refused to re set the table even though we explained that 3 people had left to go to the buffet and therefore there would be more space. Our view was of oxygen tanks and lifeboats on deck 4 in the Otto e Mezzo restaurant and we eventually got a table with a view after vociferously complaining to the local agent. 8. The 'entertainment' in the theatre wasn't much to write home about and was flat. The only enjoyable night was the concert by the male tenor. The rest is not worth mentioning. 9. The peace and quiet in the library was often disturbed by people chatting and discussing their receipts and it was only by shushing them that one got some quiet time to read. Plenty of other places to discuss financial problems but for some reason people would congregate in the library. Even the cruise advisor was in the library when they should have had a desk near the reception downstairs to discuss and advise clients. 10. Avoid the Samsara spa at all costs. I booked a taster session which promised 15 minutes each of a variety of services but ended up being given a most uncomfortable body scrub on curved mosaic couches. I wasn't even laid flat but made to bend forward over my knees whilst the beautician scrubbed my back whilst talking 15 to the dozen. The facial was just a quick wipe with 2 cotton pads and a mask plastered on and left on my skin. She didn't even bother to clean it off but sent me into the jacuzzi totally covered in oil and salt and my face mask and told me it was ok to rinse it off in the jacuzzi! She even.made me help her rub the salt/oil mixture on my legs! So much for being pampered. She then tried to sell me another treatment for €110 plus some toiletries which I refused thereby losing all interest in me. 11. The waiting staff was unhelpful and rude in the Otto e Mezzo deck 4 restaurant refusing to help when we had a seating problem and thumping down plates in front of us. We were made to feel very unwelcome and it was only after our table was changed that the situation improved. 12. The excursion staff seem to suffer from a 'take it or leave it' attitude as well as dementia as when I complained about why I was not informed that the excursion had been cancelled I was told that a note had been left in the post box outside our cabin. When I informed them no such paper had ever been placed there all I got was a shrug of the shoulders. Not even an apology or offer of compensation. Nothing at all. 13. The entire ship needs a thorough clean. The windows were filthy, streaked with dirt and difficult to see through. Even the balcony cabin glass was dirty. My advice is to totally avoud booking with Costa cruises as since their Concordia disaster the quality and service have drastically gone downhill. Read Less

We wanted a break in mid April.. . . . . . it turned out to be very disappointing. 1. All jacuzzis were always full of people with no control of time limits so we stayed out. 2. Very young children (some with dummies) were uncontrolled, both on the dance floor and at the evening meal. No problem with children playing at the right time and place.. 3. The evening's theater music reverberated in the theater, your ears and at close cabins. 4. A solely Staff Drill was announced in a blurring volume inside our cabin. What for? 5. Hospitality staff told us to go ashore to find out info regarding the next port of call!. 6. Hospitality staff never answered the telephone whenever we needed them and queuing at their desk took at least 20 minutes to get serviced. 7. Coffee after dinner is taboo. You have to go to a bar and buy it. 8. Shows were about acceptable, and the illusionist performed some acts in darkness! 9 I was taken aback when I found that while meals were included, plain water was not. The above points were raised with the Costa local agents. They were grateful for raising these shortcomings and promised to look into the points raised for future passengers, but no refund of any sort was forthcoming. Our compensation was therefore their gratitude for raising the matter!. I am not rushing to book another cruise with Costa. Read Less
