My husband and I took the Rhine River Cruise although we didn’t cruise much. The Rhine water levels were low. We weren’t sure if we should even go. We decided to make the best of it and go! We had the best time!! The people we met were wonderful, the food was good, the tours were awesome. The day was planned perfectly. Our cruise director, Maria was so sweet, she did an wonderful job getting us from place to place! She got me a cake from a local bakery because it was a day that we were not on the ship. It was so nice! Even though I’m sure cruising down the Rhine would have been even nicer, it was perfect for me. The hotel choices were great. The ship is not like an ocean liner but elegant ( we were only able to enjoy it a few days). I can’t wait to take another—hopefully the water levels will be better! Read Less

We chose this particular cruise because the cities (ports of call) on the Rhine appealed to us. We read positive reviews about Avalon and took a chance. I can't say enough good things about our experience. We had a spectacular week. The staff is awesome; from the cruise director to the wait staff and the housekeeping and the deck/nautical crew and the on-board entertainer. Everyone is VERY customer focused. The food is great....and if you don't like the menu, you can always have a steak and baked potato or a grilled chicken breast. The outings and excursions were great; lots of choices. It was a busy week but we kind of wanted busy. There is some flexibility. There are lots of excursions included and lots of "optional" excursions that cost extra. I didn't think we were being nickel-dimed. The included excursions were great with some choices in some cities. The food was great. The wine and beer choices were pretty good. I'm not a wine expert but I'm not a novice....I enjoyed the wines. There wasn't an aspect of the cruise with which I was disappointed. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and approachable and engaging. Some (not many) of the other guests were rude. We avoided them. It happens. Most guests were friendly and there to have a fun vacation. We'll do another river cruise with Avalon. Read Less

My husband and I wanted to do a river cruise through Europe with our 81 and 90 year old mothers. We wanted to have time together doing something new and interesting for us all. The highlights for us were the really lovely dinners, the gorgeous day we spent sailing through the Rhine gorge, and the incredible staff - both on the ship and on the excursions. We met people from different countries and cultures, had lots of educational outings, and experienced it all together! We toured beautiful and historic cities, the Black Forest, and the wine region. Outings to castles, the Maginot Line, and a music museum gave us a variety of new information. We also did a wine tasting, and watched as craftsmen made cuckoo clocks, wooden shoes, and Dutch cheese. We saw how a windmill ground stone to make paint. The canal tour of Amsterdam was amazing and relaxing. There was also some time to eat and shop on our own. And every night, we looked forward to the most wonderful dinners, served with elegance and congeniality. Read Less

I love cruises as it gives you a taste of several areas without having to drive yourself around and only unpack your suitcase once. I have also been on many ocean cruises so the river cruise was much more intimate. This made it much easier to learn the staff by name and easier for them to treat us special as well. I was really surprised at how easy embarkation and disembarkation went. I was envisioning long lines and there was none of that. This was our first trip to Europe to celebrate my 50th birthday. I loved the excursions that came with the trip. It helped us get a taste of the area and allowed some free time to either explore on our own or relax back on the ship. We made sure to utilize the bicycles, hot tub, gym and lounge area. The gym could use to be bigger, maybe atleast 2-3 treadmills and a weight set (other than the 3 pounds weights that were there). Oh and a bigger window so you can look outside while working out would be a plus. I do wish we had longer days or perhaps overnight stays in some ports as there wasn't enough free time to really get to experience the town in a more relaxed pace. But unfortunately, most cruises are that way. We hadn't even finished our trip yet and my husband was asking where else can we go? And how soon can we come back. We loved it that much. I told him you don't have to twist my arm, I love to travel and definitely so much more to see in Europe. Just need to save up the vacation days and we will plan another trip. Read Less

This was out 2nd cruise with Avalon. The first was on the Senn River to Normandy. The crew and dinning staff were always fantastic. The excursions were always planned well with almost perfect guides. The food on board was awesome and perfect. What i might suggest is a rating on excursions that require a lot of walking. We took the Maggot Line excursion, and while we were fine, there were a few that had to cut the tour short. During the cruise, there was an issue with low water, however the staff and Captain kept us advised as we approached the area in question. It turned out that there was no need for a transfer as the Captain was able to get the craft thru the area in question without any inconvenience to the passengers, which is a big credit to the staff of Avalon. The entertainment was great, and what i thought was really good was the pre-dinner briefing by the Cruise Director who always did a fantastic job. Avalon always does the best!!! Read Less

It was our first time trying a river cruise and we were concerned before we went as my wife and I typically travel on our own. The idea of being a part of a group made us a little apprehensive. After experiencing the ease of Avalon's trip we no longer would hesitate to do it again The dining room was a evening highlight where we ate with many nice people over the course of the journey. The food was excellent and the wine good and flowing regularly. The entertainment in the evenings was varied some quite good, other parts could probably be improved a bit. The room was clean and the ship very quiet. Our tour guides and cruise director were experienced in their roles. The tours were informative and the destinations quite nice. We also signed up for a couple of optional cruises in the afternoon. While they were very enjoyable, we felt that we probably should have passed on one of the morning tours that day, as we felt a bit rushed getting back for lunch, then out for the afternoon excursion, and then back for the evening port talk and dinner. When we sadly left the boat at the end, we were a bit tired out, but in a very good way. We relaxed a bit at our next destination on our own. We also quickly missed being taken care of and shown the sights. Doing it on our own seemed so less efficient!! I don't see how you can go wrong with Avalon!! Read Less

We arrived a day early and had time to explore Amsterdam on our own which was enhanced by the guided walking tour as part of the itinerary. On arrival at the ship we were greeted by friendly staff and directed to our cabin (206) which we found to be small but quite comfortable and with an exceptional view just a few feet above the water. There was plenty of room for all our stuff and storage areas we never even used. We explored the ship from one end to the other and every crew person we met greeted us with a smile and "Hello". The food was excellent and plentiful and again, all the staff were attentive, polite and helpful when there was a question. The on-board musician was a hoot and the extra entertainment the ship brought on-board was a fun change of pace, especially the wood carving demonstration. The shore excursions were very good with only one being so-so (due to the guide, not the city). Tony our Cruise Director was really good at evening briefings for the next days activities and he was very receptive to any and all concerns and praise we had regarding the guides. Service was superlative, the food was Delicious, and the staff attentive at mealtimes. The intimacy of a river cruise is the deciding factor for us. We have done an ocean cruise and after our experience with Avalon, will only do River Cruises in the future. Instead of 3000 people, there is 135, you actually get to know your shipmates, and have amiable companions on your excursions. Being able to be up on the top deck and be a part of going through the locks was also an important event. The crew and the sailors were always ready to answer questions and point out interesting items. Our cabin was great, from the time we sailed from Amsterdam, we had the sliding glass door open whenever possible to not miss a minute of the countryside! The only down fall was the low water level of the Rhine River which necessitated us changing ships mid-cruise, but the crew and staff made it seamless, they incorporated the change with our excursions for the day and we arrived at the other ship our luggage was in our room and all we had to do was unpack. We are deeply appreciative of the priority placed on safety, and not taking the risk of running the ship aground. Read Less

What a wonderful way to travel!! Avelon Waterways met all my expectations and then exceeded them. Every member of the crew was friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and content. We ran into low water levels on the Reine that required us to exchange boats so we could continue our travels toward Amsterdam. This could have been a major irritation but it was done so smoothly and professionally that it caused only a very slight change in our expected itinerary. We were extremely fairly compensated for the minor inconvenience. The tours were interesting and well done, with ample time to explore on our own at our leisure. The company offered a tour guide for "gentle walkers" at each port which was very helpful for those who needed a bit of extra time. Meals were delicious with enough options to please all palates. There was only one seating which meant there was never a feeling of being rushed to prepare for another meal service. Wait staff were friendly on both boats and made the meals that much more enjoyable. A final note, the crews of both boats had to efficiently get their passengers off their respective vessels, clean them, receive new passengers then do it all again 3 days later. We never saw any sign of any of them being irritated, disgruntled or rushed. The sign of a well run company is not how they perform when things go smoothly but when they don't. Read Less

We choose Avalon for our Rhine River Cruise so that we could get a very European feel to our experience. We did not want to be around only Americans and knew that Avalon passengers come from many Enlgish speaking countries from around the world. We got to know guests from Australia, the UK, and Canada to name a few. The food was wonderful thtoughout the cruise. They offered regional speciaties as we traveled, focusing on specialties for the locations we were visiting. We picked this cruise line in part to exerience European cuisine. The excursions each day took us to wonderful city centers, Cathedrals, and specialty museums. Thought was put into both the included and optional excursions. Port talks each evening prepared us for the next day’s adventure. Throughout our cruise, the on board staff were attentive, personable and truly lovely to get to know. They made an effort to get to know us and make us feel like a part of the family. We are looking forward to traveling again with Avalon Waterways in the next few years. Read Less

Our Romantic Rhine cruise departed 8/19/18 from Basel northbound to Amsterdam. We added two days before the cruise in Zurich (wish it had been 3), and two days after in Amsterdam (would have been fine with one). We chose Avalon because of somewhat better pricing over Viking at the time we booked. We had never heard of Avalon, but the travel agent had good things to say. Our itinerary was very similar to Viking's. From embarkation to change-of-ships (more later) to disembarkation, the staffs of both Avalon's Affinity and Felicity, the sister ship, were bend-over-backward welcoming and accommodating. Special kudos to cruise director Tony- a hard-working and super-friendly pro. To prospective first-time river cruisers, if you have only done 3000-passenger ocean cruises, this experience is DIFFERENT. Less passengers, more intimate, better food, no hard-sell jewelry shows, no Broadway shows or casinos, more education, and yes- less evening entertainment. But we were so tired from the day's excursions by dinner's end at 9 or 9:30pm, we just wanted to retire to our room! There was an entertainer in the lounge for some that wanted to dance and drink, but we didn't use that feature. We loved every one of the included excursions/towns. We opted for extras in Colmar (so glad!) and the Maginot Line (fascinating). The food was great, we never had to look for the waiter for more wine at dinner- sometimes we had to cover the glass because we had had our fill. The service was exemplary. The only wrinkle in our week had to do with Mother Nature. Europe is suffering from 3 months of extreme heat and drought. There were stretches of the Rhine that were not navigable for these types of ships. When that became apparent to the captain, the decision was made to swap the Affinity's northbound passengers with sister ship Felicity's southbound folks. The ships simply swapped us out and u-turned back the way they had come. We missed one town (Mainz) but were bused to a sightseeing boat which apparently could navigate the shallower water, so we saw many of the castles after all. We were well compensated for our trouble and given a freebie excursion at the Amsterdam end, and welcomed onto the freshly-cleaned Felicity with friendly smiles and a second welcome dinner to finish our northbound cruise. They were so doggoned nice about it we forgave them for having to pack up and unpack our luggage all over again. And it sure beat the experience of some other ships, which had to complete the tour on buses and hotels. And our cruise director Tony (with whom we had all bonded) came to the new ship with us. No complaints; it was extremely well handled. Disembarkation from the ship went smoothly - until those of us that were staying extra days in Amsterdam were bused to the hotel- then there was some confusion and poor communication about getting our luggage off the bus. Could have been communicated better by the rep on the bus- she certainly had time. Of our pre and post-cruise days, I would say this: we were MUCH more enamored with Switzerland than Amsterdam. From Zurich we did a lovely day trip to Lucerne, took a lovely boat ride on Lk Lucerne, a cog RR up and down Mt Rigi, enjoyed the views and looked around that beautiful city. Switzerland is clean, friendly, and has extremely efficient transportation systems. While we visited beautiful museums and the Anne Frank house, in general Amsterdam was over-crowded, less clean, less friendly, not as easy to figure out the transportation system. The tram drivers slammed some doors in our faces. We felt a bit uneasy a couple times with large throngs of young people crowding us on the sidewalks. And the thousands of bicyclists sure do have the right of way- just ask them!! Maybe we were tired and ready to go home, but not in love with this city, and won't return. Three days after we got home there was a stabbing incident in Amsterdam's Central Station, so we felt our instincts were not totally out of line. Take that, Chamber of Commerce! None of that, however, is on Avalon. We loved our cruise!! I'd do another Avalon cruise in a heartbeat. Read Less

We looked at Viking and Avalon seemed to offer the identical itinerary with a smaller ship. We were very happy with the cruise, the stateroom, the itinerary, the excursions, the staff, the service, the food, and the entire experience. We have cruised on Ocean liners many times and this was comparable yet more intimate. We had some issues with our toilet, and it needed to be replaced before the end of the cruise. That was annoying and then our neighbors, who had the adjacent cabin and whom we were traveling with, also had issues with their toilet. The issues were resolved promptly but it detracted from our cruise a bit. The food in the dining experience was excellent. While the choices were limited, there was always an option for diners that didn't want the main fare. I did wish there were (included) sparkling wine options, as I am not a regular wine drinker as much. Read Less

I knew nothing about river cruises and had really only heard about the most popular one that is advertised on TV. I did some reading, decided on Avalon and am very glad I did. From the very beginning the agents were helpful and answered all of my questions. Intermediate updates kept me apprised of things. We stayed in Amsterdam a few prior to the cruise so we did our own airfare and hotel stay there. On the assigned day we went to the ship to check in...which went flawlessly. From the start the crew was friendly. The stateroom cabins...there were 4 of us..were roomy and very comfortable with loads of storage space. There was dining in the main dining room as well as in one of lounges for those who only wanted something light for breakfast or lunch. Lots of choices for breakfast...including an omelet chef..and for lunch. The dinner menu had 3 choices for entrees but also had staples (chicken, salmon) if none of the choices appealed to you. Wine and beer..as well as soft drinks..were complimentary with lunch and dinner. For evening entertainment there was a piano player in the lounge and for 2 nights there was entertainment from local talent when we stayed in port late. Both the included and optional tours were loads of fun and informative. What really got to me more than anything was the friendliness of the crew. Also..the WiFi was great...and is included! Meals were top notch and selection of local wines and beer were perfect. The excursions were always entertaining. Much to see in this part of the world. Tour guides were always well spoken and very personable. We highly recommend seeing the Maginot Line when in Strasbourg. It is a sobering reminder of the last world war. Kiril (Entertainer) was great at keeping the energy high in the lounge on nights when we were all tired from exploring during the day. Our only complaint is that it all had to come to an end eventually. I'd highly recommend extending the trip on both ends of the cruise in both Switzerland and Amsterdam. So much to see and experience. "Chapeau" to everyone involved in pulling off such a wonderful cruise. See you next time! Read Less

We previously had cruised with Avalon on the Danube and wanted to cruise the Rhine. Avalon employees go out of their way to make their guests feel at home, welcome and wanted. Aside from great service, as last time, the food was great. Avalon worked hard to accomidate the needs of the individual guest. Dietary requests made were met and remembered by individual servers in the dinning room. The time tables for programs, excursions, and information gatherings were alway on time and organized. Our cruise director, Thomas, was great. There seem to be a lot of river cruise lines on the rivers now and we passed a number of other ships and just from looking at the ships, for the most part, my reaction was always, " I'm glad we are travelling with Avalon." Every cruise is different with different employees but I can't think of any reason why we would go on another cruise and not consider Avalon our top choice. Read Less

3 generations (grandson, daughter/son-in-law and grandparents) elected to take this trip. Wonderful way to travel through Europe — no traffic, no changing hotels — Boat was beautiful and crew was incredible. Daily tours provided historical perspectives with a local feel. Tour guides (bar one) were exceptional. Port cities provided a wide range of European experience — from tiny to bustling. The pace was a bit slow for the younger generations, and the youngest was certainly more interested in the larger cities (Amsterdam). Given the distance traveled during the week, there often wasnt time to explore in more depth, but this provided a great opportunity to note places for future visits. The scenery while traveling was beautiful — European countryside! Some of the ports were more industrial. Transport to tour locations (typically bus) were efficient and comfortable. Most trips were under 30 minutes, so time wasn’t wasted on coaches, which was great. The boat itself was very comfortable. Rooms were “tight”, but not uncomfortably so. Plenty of storage for unpacking and room under the bed for suitcases. The staff, as mentioned above were helpful, accommodating and very service oriented. Food was plentiful!! One traveler was vegetarian and could easily find great choices. Would definitely travel on Avalon again, but younger generations would probably not unless there was a more “active” option. Overall, great experience. Read Less

The meals in the dining room & elsewhere were delicious and varied, and the service in the dining room and the Panorama Lounge was first-rate. Thanks to Emilia, Yannis and all our servers - you are the best! Entertainment is not the main attraction of this cruise but the music provided each evening was enjoyable and appropriate. We also got good reviews of Affinity cruises from our travel agent and from a personal friend who had taken 3-4 cruises with Affinity. Accomodations were very nice, food was fabulous, and the tours offered were excellent. Onshore excursions were very educational and hosted by local guides that were in-the-know. Our cruise director was an amazing source of information about the cities we stopped at, and offered good advice for walking tours, shopping, and restaurants/food in each city. Food onboard ship was outstanding, particularly the dinners which were a little more formal than lunch and breakfast. Service was also amazing, staff were never far when you needed another drink or coffee, etc. I would definitely consider going on another Affinity cruise in the future. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and the embarkation port of Amsterdam. The staff was incredible and we had everything we could have ever needed. We were well taken care of and we wanted for nothing. The excursions were great and the food was even better. We had a wonderful time and explored so many cities in a short period of time. If you want to explore the cities in more depth, this cruise would not be for you. We were in some ports for just a few hours. The only disappointing excursion was the one to Heidelberg Castle. We were there for less than an hour. Many of us were extremely disappointed and some were even angry to spend so little time at such a great place. We had some electrical issues the last day of the cruise and could not sail to Basel which was where we were disembarking. We had to have alternate arrangements to our final destination, but it ran smoothly and the crew took care of everything. Avalon was a great choice for our first river cruise! Read Less
