I have been on many cruises and the Holland America Line has to be the worst cruise I have been on. The activities during the day consisted of seminars Sail away party consisted of nothing on deck, no live performance - just music and the ship selling their drinks as much as they can. No Games No Karoke Comedian - Terrible Illusiionist - Was Good Dancing Show in Theatre - Awful Centre Stage - Violinist - I find this boring - was not interested though there were many elderly people that were Piano Bar - Ok BB Kings - was by far the best entertainment on the ship. But How much can you listen to blues songs everynight. Rated my worst cruise ever. Ports - Destination Alaska 7 nights - Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Glacier Bay all beautiful areas. Ship itself, clean and tidy Cabin steward - very nice Dining - Average variety of food - nothing special Read Less

We wanted to see Alaska and Glacier Bey, So HA cruise line was one of the lines that goes there and we where advised by our travel agent as well. Ship had good rooms and great stuff. Everything else didn't meet our expectations. Of 7 days there where just 5 days of shows on mane stage and most of them where low class performances (other two days they showed a movie). On other stages performances where the same each nice so after first day nothing new. They had just two ping pong tables that where very popular because there wasn't anything else to do. Pool aerie was closed way to early at 9pm and we literally where kick out when we where there at 9pm. Just two activities where organized just last day in a ship but very poor and short (ping pong tournament and song trivia). Buffet food was okay but dining room food was almost as buffet food, not so much special taste food. We knew that HA cruise to Alaska will be quieter experience but it was just bad organized and low quality with a little that they had. And at each corner they tried to sell us something, like creams at spa, good feet at gym, bear at buffet, meal to buy at dinning and so on. We for sure will try another cruise lines but wont suggest anyone HA line. Also we spoke with other travelers that used that line before and they tolled that this year they really very poor organized compare to before. Also we heard from our travel agent that other people where complaining withe their line too. Read Less

They sent as a coupon. 1) My husband booked me a 2 hours spa treatment. I was taken in late for my treatment, while i did the seaweed wrap the therapist left the room , and never bothered to come check on me, and ask how i was doing. The massage was probably the worst massage i have ever had. Once the treatment was done, she was trying to sell me $ 350+ worth of products, and trying to talk me into purchasing additional treatments, by pointing out my skin is sagging, my eyes are puffy etc.....very intelligent:) They put a bottle of water in your room, but there was no label or warning that they were going to charge you $ 5.75 for it! When we got the final bill they raised the daily mandatory tips at $ 14.50/person. The food in the buffet was same every single day, without a fail. As far as entertainment, not much , there was only one show worth the time in the whole week. In the day time , the ship was like a dormant boring place, unless you had plenty of cash to spare you would keep yourself entertained because all they did , tried to sell you anything. The library had no books, other than speciality travel books and such. To conclude, I think I am pretty much done cruising. Read Less

Got bitten by bedbugs on the first night all over upper body. Cruise medical center refused to address the problem on Christmas Eve, unless I paid $95 for consultation on a problem caused by poor health condition and lack of proper maintenance and examination of bedding. I inspected pillows and found badly stained pillows obscured by pillow covers. The next day after I suffered these horrible red itching bites, I decided to inspect mattress also and discovered a blanket insert that had three dried blood stains, which was also hidden with a zipped cover over the mattress. It was disgusting! Again, we requested replacements. The overall ship is nice but everything shuts down by 11pm. You can't even get a hot dog from the outside Lido since the pools and outside area is completely closed and dark. No Karaoke for us lovers of this fun activity. The ship catered to selling high priced jewelry, terribly overpriced, if you have any knowledge of the cost of fine jewelry, which I have had for over 40 years. The best parts of the ship was The Lincoln Stage Performances and The BB King's All Stars band. It is a ship for the elderly who have no interest but to sun bathe and view overpriced jewelry and art. The Art Gallery was quite nice but I didn't bother to ask about the price of any of the wonderful paintings since I was convinced it would be as ridiculous as the jewelry. The jewelry auction proved my point. No one bid over approximately $1100 for any of the jewelry that was auctioned. The jewelry indicated pieces worth at least $28,000, with bids starting at around $18,000. In fact I said nothing but the guy who purchased the pair of earrings for the nearly $1100 must not have known he was being overpriced. No one bothered to bid on the over 20 or more items since they too must have realized it was overpriced. The ports that sold jewelry I believe were also a rip-off. In Cozumel you could possibly get a decent pair of cowboy boots at a reasonable price if you negotiated with the seller for Roger's Boots. Ocho Rios was a rip-off since you had to take a bus to beach and be charged for everything connected to it. No free rides here. The 7-mile beach had bad large graveled sand. Not comfortable for bare feet! I wanted to use an Expedia $100 onboard credit to purchase and monogram robe, but the guest service person, an Indonesian clerk, lied to me and told me no new robes were available for sale that I could use the credit towards. This turned out to be a lie, since my husband was able to order one to be billed to our cabin, with three letter free monogram, which was personally delivered to our cabin: 10033, by an apologizing guest services person. I was never offered any assistance for the painful and annoying bedbug bites and had to purchase skin irritation and abrasion cream as well as spray from the gift shop. The gift shop was also overpriced with items that should have cost much less. We are upper middle class people and are by no means tightwads, but the prices we encountered on this trip were ridiculous, including the price of the cruise, which offered very limited activities. No Broadway or Las Vegas style shows will you see here, even though the main stage is beautiful. What a terrible waste? The Main Stage entertainment was less than mediocre and short on time. The food was not the best, but good none the less. The overall staff attendants were excellent! However, we did not need two attendants @$14.50 each to be assigned to our small cabin, with small balcony. The person in charge of inspection of housekeeping should be heavily reprimanded for not instructing cabin attendants to inspect bedding for cleanliness, wear and tear --BEDBUGS! Never expected this on a relatively new ship. Horrible! There is no excuse for the heavily stained pillows or blanket or any other unhealthy bedding that I did not discover. We have been on many cruises throughout the years, but will never go Holland America again. Even the teenagers on deck were bored to death. I found them one night sprawled out on the outside of their so-called lounge or club area laying on the floor or doing whatever they could to keep from falling to sleep at around 11pm. I would never book this cruise again, even if I'm 100 years old. It would still be too boring for me. Read Less

If you are looking for excitement and entertainment on this ship your are on the wrong ship. My experience was having to stand in long lines waiting for a small portion food in the Lido dinning room. Take your own bath soap if you are allergic to mint dispense soap and you are not going to get any body lotion. Place the do not disturb sign on your door if you don't want the attendant barging in your room early in the morning. Most of the time finding a seat in the LIDO can be difficult to get a clean table. The shore excursions are a waste of time if you booked through the cruise line. Don not expect to any entertainment during the day and the only attraction is the BB King band, after a few days you gbecome tired of the atosphere. The food in the manin dinning room is above average and expect to share a table with folks who have you feeling uncomfortable. Conclusion!! Waited over 3 hours to get on ship because of US customs. Waited 45 mins to get off ship at first port of call and everyone was late for their trips. Queued to get back on ship. This was our first cruise and probably our last. Trip to travel on river from Haines was rubbish , mainly because tide was out!!! The trip said , River teaming with salmon so we could see bears, eagles wolves etc , can salmon swim up mud.. no they cannot, so no salmon, no other wildlife. We went on two other trips neither of which was memorable. The balcony cabin we had was great, staff were great. The entertainment was not to our taste but we did enjoy the jazz group, staff again were great. It was dufficult to find a seat for breakfast on several, occasions, very pushy to buy a la carte extras in the Fine Dining section and lastly DO NOT PURCHASE SOPHIE FfIORE jewellery on board. I did complain but my emails did not get a reply for 5 weeks, that was bad..... Sophie Fiori however, was a joke, purchased something in the sale , had it valued when I got back and it was not worth half what I paid. It is buy and no return so be careful. Read Less

Dear all My room no. Is 8012 in ms nieuw amsterdam. 23rd June departure from vancouver There are several issues. Let me point out each one 1. I am pure Hindu vegetarian traveller. Before booking I had clearly asked that I need Indian vegetarian meal. I was clearly told yes Holland America is best vegetarian friendly. On coming the same turned to worst nightmare On first day of lunch it was told that there were less supply as new supply is being refilled and from tommorow you will get variety of food. Told ok no problem. Let's manage a day while all other had there full option to eat. From 2nd day the same is situation till day 6.either something is over or we will do tommorow but there is no tommorow than. Had Worst experience where I had taken a naan and just yogurt to each and tried to break naam with hand and in couldn't and than with teeth than too it was unbreakable. Given it to chef MR mani who told me this is hard one requested by guest but no guest request a UNBREAKABLE NAAN as it is to eat and not a sovenier at the room I was told daily to contact Mr mani and he will make seperate but my simple question is why we are not provided quality food and substandard is done between guest who complains and some they are normal and no complain gets the unbreakable naan. Matter reported to charnea guest manager at lido market. Most Indian on cruise if asked are satisfied than you can see the reply 15 are there in my group. The best person who eats in to most item in our group it wss also now fed up. There are no variety. I had complained on day 3rd breakfast where I had waited 1 hrs for a menu item before the steward came to me and told item is wrongly written and had complained to Denise who was manager for in room dining and she called chef Mr siva Kumar who says he is only one Indian chef and have 120 people to handle alone. There is no fault of him seems and so called Denise in front of Mr siva Kumar and told her what Mr siva said as this is fault of Holland America side that enough staff was not provided though clear booking was done with passport details nationality and even telling our food preference to booking agent. Even in Indian item. Name tags are not being put and the same counter is mixed with non vegetarian. 2nd greenhouse spa Offered hydro pool and thermal suite package at 219 per couple and was booked by me immediately on the day of embarkation and was told only last 4 space left 35 couple. 70 person is the max allowed. All good for 2 days and than came the day of skagway where board was kept for the same thing of 130 dollars which was only for skagway joining passengers but to my surprise they took booking from all the guests who boarded from Vancouver too and with bargained price of 90-100 dollars for couple. Right now there are much more than 70 persons and had told first day that I would only do it if the max cap of 70 is maintained. It is like public pool now and also with this bargain thing totally dissatisfied with working and demand a strong refund for the same. Also all general public is entering the hydro pool as the door is not kept closed 3rd room shower had fallen when it was turned on leg on first day of cruise which can't be allowed as it was not checked 4th room ac not working properly complained on first day is not resolved till date. 5th highly overcharged from exc tours. Don't buy they don't care for us Team to my surprise I found that white pass railway done by me through exc tours is also price higher than the price given on its official website Matter report to Mr lyron who was not ready to agree the fact first that it's overpriced. After giving him proof he have taken time and than comes with terms and conditions no where published. Mr lyron says this offer is only for online purchase and sent letter of terms which wasn't available online. no where that terms are published online Also if its for online only it should have been clearly written on main page This is program with Holland America that you try to earn 10 dollars more for anything and everything after normal profit and than just tell to read terms where nothing was told to us like this. Point 1 reported to Denise and charnea as well as guest manager Mr Jorn Point 2 reported to mr jorn who committed me to get back to me within next 24 hrs. Point 3 and 4 reported to housekeeping Point 5 reported to lyron exc manager on board Read Less

We heard great things about Holland America but unfortunately for us, none of it was true. Service was horrible in all areas , from the cabin to the pool bar. We had the drink package and didn't have more than 4-5 drinks a day. At times, no one would wait on us. The ship itself was beautiful but service is more important to us. I had an appointment for accupuncture and when i got there, my name wasnt even listed. If this was the first cruise we went on, we would never cruise again. Going through immigration in Key West was painful. I have mobility issues and we kept being redirected in circles . No one would help us walk to where we were going or find a place for me to sit. It was a horrible week and we have already decided that we will never do HAL again. Read Less

Because it fit in with a followup to our WONDERFUL ROYAL CARIBBEAN HARMONY OF THE SEAS the prior week! --1st big thing is 900 gospel singers on the ship that they couldn't totally fill leaving people like us as LEFTOVERS. They got early entertainment, ours was 9:00 p.m. We were not told this was the scenario when we booked directly with them. I asked the front desk on the 1st day WHY we were not told! NO ANSWER! --Ship stores closed for renovation & improvements. Even when they reopened they were not much to look at. --Ports were 3 beach type ports: Coco Cay, Labadee, Amber Cove (closed that day due to waves) and Cozumel. Coco Cay was fabulous! Cozumel mediocre. Labadee, been before, but okay for a beach day. Really wanted to see the new Amber Cove development, but no go. --Food was poor in dining room compared to Harmony. One day there was nothing on the main menu we would eat so opted for a 3rd day of salmon. The best thing there was our table partners whom we had just met. --Lunch and Breakfast Buffet upstairs okay, but not the best and many repeat items. Service for meals mostly good. --Ship full of old people. I am old too, but not decrepit. Not a young person's cruise. --Entertainment couldn't touch Royal Caribbean performances. Offers after dinner were cheesy games in the lounges, guy and girl singer that couldn't sing the greatest, a nature movie, dancing on the stage, a gal that impersonated other singers was not bad, but did it 2 nights, dance routine we skipped. Just wasn't worth it. Been on 20+cruises mostly with Royal Caribbean and this one line will never be on my list again. Read Less

We spent approximately 2100.00 $ for two to experience shore excursions. What was stated online was not what we received for most of our excursions. We felt lied to. By day 3 we complained and it fell on deaf ears. By week 2 we complained again....and it fell on deaf ears. We weren't the only ones upset, as others on our excursions also complained. When Guest Services attempted to set up an appointment with Shore Excursions we were told it was not possible because they were inundated with complaints. Also, before we booked with Cruiseplus.ca, I asked the agent if this cruise line was popular with very senior guests. We did not want a disabled cruise, nor a senior cruise. I was told that it wasn't known for this. Not true! There were so many with walkers, scooters and canes. I am quite mobile, and felt that many of the excursions were likely geared for this clientele group. The evening entertainment was not even close to what I have experienced with Celebrity. We have been told that since Carnival bought out Holland America, Princess and I'm sure there are more.....that it hasn't been the same. Disembarkation was also a problem. Our agent had told us to take a shuttle, because then if we were late for our flight then the Cruise Line would have to look after this. The gal at guest services stated that we couldn't take the shuttle as our flight was for 12:05 and the shuttle could only be used by those with 12:30 or thereafter. She then told me to put our luggage out in the hall the night before and pick it up at the terminal in the morning. I knew that this couldn't be correct, as we wouldn't be able to disembark early in the morning, retrieve our luggage...get a taxi (which become hard to obtain when 2,000 people are disembarking), and get to the airport 2-3 hours before our flight. We likely wouldn't make it on time....and then of course the cruise line wouldn't be responsible. The girl behind the counter stated with attitude, "Mam, I'm trying to explain to you!". I gathered my papers and went upstairs to alert my husband that he was needed. We went back to Guest Services and were told by a different employee that we should select Early Disembarkation (Expedited), and bring all of our luggage with us. She agreed that retrieving our luggage at a later time from the terminal likely would have made us late for our return home flight. There were other rude employees, but most were very nice. Sad that one remembers the rude ones though. Costa Rica was a terrible excursion due to about a dozen of us not being able to locate the driver, tour guide for at least 3/4 of an hour. And once again it was an excursion that did not meet up with what was outlined...it was a huge lie. Regarding TIPS! Why would I want to give a gratuity to those that are rude, or to parts of the ship that I don't partake....such as drinking and gambling. Yet when one wants to say no from the start....you are made to feel guilty .... and you are still given a bill at the end of the trip with this included. The night before disembarkation we had to visit Guest Services again to have this removed. We couldn't. They have your credit card....so you feel that this hangs over your head the entire trip. The morning of disembarkation we finally had it removed and I rushed around with envelopes of money to give to those who deserved a tip! Went beyond the call of duty. Whether our stateroom attendants received this money.....I will never know. They had to disembark the ship and go through customs. I had to leave their envelopes in our room. SAD!!! We were extremely disappointed with this 21 day trip! Read Less

My wife and I traveled with her parents. We had a cabin on Deck 7, with a nice balcony. Check in was a 3.5 hour disaster, being told first to go to one place and then told that we had to go to another place...5 different times. And we waited and were herded like sheep from one large holding room to another. No one seemed to know what to do and of course, no water, no one to answer question, just "go there, sit there, stand and wait there" for 3.5 hours. After boarding we arrived at our cabin which was really small considering it was supposed to be larger and with a balcony. It was reasonably clean, except for the carpet, the HVAC vents (which had hair and dust hanging from the vent and which was never cleaned during the cruise). The crew are constantly smiling and saying good morning, etc. but when you see them not interacting with a passenger they look pretty miserable and are fairly lazy. I sent my shoes out for polishing twice and they were wiped off, but not polished. We used the lotion provided which was never replenished. Daily cleaning consisted of making the bed, replacing towels and wiping off the sink (missing hair a few times), making the bed and emptying the wastebasket. One of the things that really bugged us was the waste of paper. They constantly deluge you with notices in your mail box advertising sales of jewelry, art work, excursions, future cruises, etc. etc. to the extent that we were getting 6-10 extrinsic pieces of paper per day. And of course, when you check in online you are told to print your check in documents (multiple pages) which you are told on the dock were not necessary. The food in the Lido lounge was not good and one day I actually got food poisoning from a bad salmon omelette. Often in the main dining room when choices were made (i.e. items to include in a make your own omelette) there were items missing. Getting a second cup of coffee required a special request. The food was acceptable but clearly mostly made well in advance and calculated to look much more special than it tasted. And the money grubbing that HAL does is truly offensive. At EVERY meal you are asked if you want a special extra charge coffee or other beverage. When you ask for advice on wine, you are ALWAYS pointed to the most expensive choice and it is clear the wine steward has little to no knowledge about wines. Upsell, upsell, upsell happens a dozen times a day and gets really tiring. I lost track of how many times I was solicited to buy their drink package at $55 per person per day for up to 15 drinks a day that cost up to $9 each (which is about 2/3 of their drinks). We bought a wine package and again were pushed to upgrade to a higher level. When we ordered wine off our package we were told the most expensive bottle was clearly the best. Then there are the photographers, taking pictures and trying to sell them to you, the art gallery, the jewelry "sales", the shoe orthotics, the spa treatments, massages, facials and face lift packages, the "private" cabanas, the soda that you are charged for, it simply never ends. Even the tour and "gift" and jewelry shops closest to the ship in every port are owned by HAL, or so we were told by one of the merchants. What was good? Our room was reasonably quiet except for the racket made by the crew early each morning as they went up and down the hallway with their cleaning carts and equipment. The balcony was sufficiently large and pleasant. The scenery was beautiful. The crew were usually cheerful and always said they would do or bring you what you asked for (although it often didn't happen). The elevators were fast and efficient. We arrived on time although we never departed at the scheduled time. The Captain declined to tell us of "gale force winds" and "20 foot swells and waves" until everyone was back on board and the ship had departed, thereby denying a timid sailor the chance to avoid seasickness (we are not in that category, fortunately). We had a lengthy conversation with one of the officers in the Silk Road bar (which is beautifully decorated) but we noticed he appeared very unhappy and seemed to drink to excess (fortunately he was not the Captain or an officer charged with navigation). The entertainment was mediocre and the crew show was pathetic. Also the crew said they didn't get off work until after midnight and then had to rehearse on their own time until 4:30 am. Our impression is that the crew of mostly Indonesians were not very well paid and were worked extremely hard. We were told they do not have a day off during their entire 10 month contract. And finally, we discovered that we grossly overpaid for our cabin. We found other people who had paid less than 1/3 what we paid and who had better cabins, included drink packages, etc. This clearly is our own fault, and I would not even mention it but for the other shortcomings by HAL. Tipping is automatically added to the bill ($27 per day per cabin) and is divided supposedly among the crew. I prefer to tip directly and did so, while I still paid the $27 per day. All in all, we aren't likely to sail on HAL again. Read Less

I chose this ship as I had heard good reviews and as it was a "holiday of a lifetime" we thought we would pay a bit more. It turned out to be the worst experience of a holiday we had ever had. There was nobody at the airport to meet us in Canada after a nine hour flight which was in itself very stressful. There was no help or guidance as to where to go with any of the organised excursions which I had booked online through Holland and America with us being put on the wrong bus at one time which the tour guide found funny!. One of the excursions was changed without our consent which would have meant us missing the next one so we went and changed it back and noticed a $10 fee each for it being charged on our statement so we had to go and get it refunded, for which we were made to feel an inconvenience and the staff were very rude. We were treated worse than cattle when queuing to get on board which took us over 5 hours with no seats for disabled people and one person passed out in the queue which was very distressful. A lot of the entertainment on board involved an extra fee and there was not much choice of entertainment even the films shown in the cinema were available to watch on TV in your room. Staff were unhelpful and if anything ran out they were not willing to go and get more until the next day. It is the only cruise where food was not available most of the time when we asked if there was anything to eat we were told there were burgers and hotdogs in the lido but as a vegetarian that did not offer a solution to us. We discovered to our horror that Holland America had accepted additional money from someone to hire a large portion of the ship for a private function which meant that after waiting for an hour and a half for a good seat to watch wildlife I was told I had to move out of that section!!! We were dropped at the airport to go home at 10.30am with 8 hours to wait at the airport before our flight, both ill with the flu. Sanitisation on board was very poor with just a hand cleaner before entry to the restaurants which about 50% of people noticed or used. We held off writing a bad review because we wanted Holland America to have a chance to reply. They agreed we had been treated badly and offered to pay us £500 compensation which was a very small percentage of the price we paid but we agreed to accept as we were pretty annoyed by this time with the whole thing and wanted to forget it. HOWEVER over 3 months later we have still not received any compensation despite several e-mail chases and an e-mail from the travel agent. My Wife & I chose this Holland America Company purposely…as we were expecting a 5 star experience…especially after seeing numerous ads on television saying “Savor the Experience”. We spent top dollar for the Best Cabin- the Neptune Suite. Holland America has a lot to learn on how to handle a VIP guest…as they believe all it takes is a larger room with better sheets & pillows. The reality is…you are treated like everyone else on the ship…with very little service and the most unorganized management style (waiting in lines constantly for EVERYTHING with lousy food too). There was absolutely nothing “special’… considering that were paying close to triple. And if you’re a Smoker (like we are) FORGET about it…they cram you in an area with 12 tables (48 seats) next to the bar outside in the back of the ship…& this is WHERE you will find all the drunk & Loud obnoxious guests drinking the CHEAPEST Caribbean cocktails that can be made:( I would like to add, we went on Carnival for my Wife’s very first cruise in December ( taking the Best suite)….and even with all the craziness & Carnivals “iffy” reputation…we were treated like royalty with GREAT service & very strong food in the Main Dining Room…We had a GREAT TIME!!!! The Bottom Line: AVOID Holland America if your looking for a Romantic 5 star experience & planning to spend the HUGE extra for a suite…..as you will be terribly disappointed…like we were!!! Read Less

We have been on many Holland America cruises, but this one by far was the absolute worst ever. Unbeknown to us, they had a large group on the ship, approximately 1000 people, that were catered to, given the prime dining time in the dining room, and left the rest of us to either dine at 5:30 or go to the Lido buffet. I do not eat at 5:30, and apparently a lot of the "special group" decided they did not want to eat at 8:00; therefore, leaving hoards of people trying to dine at the Lido buffet. It was absolutely ridiculous. When complaints were made, it was merely, "sorry, nothing we can do". Holland America never notified us of the large group, or the fact that we were no longer allowed open seating for the dining room. The upper level staff were very blasé when questioned about anything. The room stewards, and the Lido staff were great. I can't tell you about the dining room staff, never saw any since we didn't ever go there! Again, don't eat at 5:30. When complaining to the Neptune concierge, it appeared to fall on deaf ears since no response was ever made, even though we were told we would be contacted. The entertainment on this cruise left a lot to be desired. The BB King Blues club was great, but that's all the good I can say about entertainment. We went with our niece, nephew and brother-in-law (this was their first cruise) and they were so disgusted, they said they'd never cruise again! Read Less

Our cruise was booked via Mail Travel/Jetline Cruises on 10th May 2016 for a 14 day cruise with departure on 26th February 2017 with anytime dining. All confirmed – no problem, or so one would think. My wife and I were travelling for the first time with Holland America with two other couples – for one couple it was their first cruise experience. We all started by sitting down in October deciding what trips we wanted to do including jet skis, boat trips etc. These we booked but within a week two of these had been cancelled and another was cancelled a month or two later – good start. Anyway, we got our flights to Miami, stayed at a nice hotel and then travelled down to meet the Nieuw Amsterdam in Fort Lauderdale. Boarding was good, we unpacked and then, feeling hungry, we met up at 7.30 in the bar for a pre-dinner drink. Whist socialising, we noticed there was a very long queue leading to the dining room. We presented ourselves for dinner just after 8pm only to be told that we should have reported for dinner at 5.30. Anytime dining had been cancelled due to the fact that Holland America had taken a bulk booking for 1,000 belonging to an American religious group. Admittedly, the room cards stated that there had been a change of times but does one read their room card as soon as one gets onto the ship? Our group had a half hour stand-off with staff who basically said tough, that’s the way it is. The buffet restaurant had closed and they expected us to pay for a speciality restaurant, or eat in our cabin (six of us – no way!) . Eventually they very begrudgingly agreed for us to eat at a speciality restaurant at their expense. Over the next few days we had several confrontations with staff who were intransigent but eventually weakened and got us into the main restaurant at our required time for a couple of days. However, this really was not the best option as we were siting over two tables and orders were arriving at different times. You may think, reading this, what a lot of wingers – not really as there were a lot of other people who, like us, were not happy with the way we were treated – some very hostile. One couple we spoke to had been on a previous Holland America cruise, had the same block booking problem happen to them, had been given an upgrade in cabin for the cruise we were on, only to find out that exactly the same thing had happened again. We have since heard that Holland America are well known for making these block bookings that affect other individual passengers. At the end of the first week, the religious group left the ship and it was as if a switch had been turned on as the ship came back to life. We suddenly realised that there had been no music in any of the bars, the ship had been like a ghost ship – nobody around after 10pm, hardly any shows, hardly anybody in the casino. I do not have a problem with religious groups going on holiday but what I do have a problem with is if it affects other peoples’ enjoyment and I have to say that Holland America approach was biased completely in favour of that group and against those other passengers who had a wholeweek without a full cruise experience. This review has been held back to see what response my group received from Holland America against our complaint. Basically, they would give a cabin upgrade but as none of our party has any intention of ever setting foot on any Holland America vessel, this was not acceptable. We requested a cash refund which has been rejected out of hand. So be warned, Holland America do not actually care about their individual passengers, they just want their money. Their bias will always be to the block booking so – beware! We shall never travel with Holland America again - it’s back to good old Celebrity and P&O! Read Less

This was our third Thanksgiving cruise on Holland America for our party of five (3 rooms). It was AWFUL. The schedule of all our favorite activities were changed the first week to accommodate a large group. Our dinner arrangements made it impossible to participate. The large group left after the first week and the schedule returned to normal. I have never complained nor had so many problems on a cruise. First there was the inability of the cook to actually cook egg "over easy" on the first try. This happened at least four or five times. Then there was the cold soup nearly every night. The soup was supposed to be hot but was lukewarm most nights. The most egregious incident kept me from seeing Grand Cayman. This was to be a tendered stop and bacause I have mobility issues for long distances, I had rented a scooter to get around the ship and ashore. The night before Grand Cayman I stopped by the front desk to inquire whether I would be able to take my scooter on the tender. I was assured that if the seas were calm that I would be able to take the scooter. The seas were indeed calm and so I went down to board the tender. The cruise director told me that I absolutely would not be allowed to take my scooter on the tender. I went to the front desk again and was told they were sorry for the "misinformation" I had been given previously. I asked if they had wheelchairs to rent and they assured me that they did. My husband agreed to push me around the island. Ok I was ready to rent the wheelchair for that day only to be told that I could only rent it for the duration of the cruise not just for one day. That did not make any sense to me since I already had the scooter. Apparently money was far more important to them than customer service. My husband went ashore without me and witnessed the crew members lifting a grown man in his heavy duty motorized wheelchair and onto the tender. Estimated weight was over 300 lbs. I would have walked onto the tender and the scooter without me on it weighed about 60 lbs. I guess I had probably not paid as much as the man in the wheelchair. My complaints to Holland America were dismissed with a promise of a $200 credit and one specialty dinner for our next cruise. I see that Princess is currently offering $600/stateroom (for a balcony as we usually book) as well as a free specialty dining experience. Oddly they are offering me more than the cruise line that made me miss Grand Cayman. I won't be booking HAL again nor will the others in my party. I have cruised Royal Carribean, Norwegian, Princess, Disney, and Carnival but have never been so disappointed as I was on Holland America. Read Less

We chose Holland America because we had cruised with them last year. The experience this year was a nightmare. I needed assistance on board as did at least 30 other couples and due to my size I was left abandoned while the so-called wheelchair assistants remained on the second floor laughing and having a great time. We saw pictures of this from another couple who were also waiting over 2 hours to get a wheelchair aboard. So from the start I saw they were cruel and insensitive to people of size. Once we finally made it aboard, we were told to muster which we were expected to attend and were directed into rows 6 people deep. Fine, no problem, our names and room was called and that should have been the end of it but instead 5 staterooms felt it wasn't worth their time to show up so the rest of us were forced to stay put, standing, for 45 minutes or longer. I excused myself into a lounge nearby and watched as elderly men and women were assisted to sit down too. I was waiting for someone to have a stroke or pass out. Passengers are NOT sailors, and NOT on board for an endurance test. If they call for passengers 3 times and they are not there, throw them off the ship because they didn't comply but don't punish the rest of the passengers. Finally, my husband got sick with severe diarrhea the second day aboard and was quarantined for the rest of the cruise! They said they would call and check on him but once a day he got a call and if he was still sick they extended his quarantine an additional 24 hours. Also, I went to a seminar about gems and on the daily events it read that if you attended you would receive a pair of tanzanite earrings. I went and got a coupon that I would have to redeem on shore but since we were stuck in our room, I got nothing. A week or two after our ordeal we both got a survey from Holland America and I shared what I have written here. The response was horrible as well. It basically said "Thanks for telling us how mean and cruel the service and cruise was for you. Hope you'll sail with us again. We'll try to make it nicer for someone else on a future cruise." I hope someone treats them the way they treated me. They have no compassion and will not admit to any wrong-doing. I'll tell as many people I know what we experienced. They have no excuse and they never apologized, just acknowledged it happened. Read Less

The staffs are very nice, and that's about it. Overall, I wasn't impressed at all. 1. Their website design is horrendous. A. I had to do multiple separate Google searches to find all the information I need about the same ship(Nieuw Amsterdam). B. The excursions will only show details and the actual price after clicking "booking" which takes me to a log in site. Once I get there, I can't go back to previous pages. That means I have to do all the searches all over again. C. Another note about the excursions: Instead of giving you the ports/locations that associate with the specific cruise ship, the excursion page gives the information of all ports. For instance, Nieuw Amsterdam doesn't go to all the ports/locations listed under Alaska, and that same page doesn't provide you where Nieuw Amsterdam stops. In order to look for excursions, I had to open multiple pages to cross check. It took forever and I ended up just booking one thing because I didn't want to spend any more energy on the sites. 2. There's no such thing as Early Bird Special with HAL Soon after we booked our cruise, we saw another huge discount available. When we asked the lady on the phone if the same cruise could match the discount, she said no. So, the lesson is learned. Do not book anything early with HAL because they might throw a discount when they get desperate. 3. A tagged luggage of ours was left alone at a random place outside when the rest of the tagged luggages made it to the designated room. 4. The tags on the phone in our room are incorrect. We stayed on Deck 6. Number 4 was marked "Information". When I pressed it, it took me to the SPA. 5. Giving the same space 3 different names to pretend that there's more space is just confusing. Try this one! BB King room, Culinary Art..., and Queen's Lounge are exactly the same space. 6. Cruise ship photos could be done more eco friendly and cheaper. The photos are way over priced. Printing them all out for demonstration is absolutely a huge waste of papers. It's hard to believe that there isn't a way of linking photo files to the fancy personal room card. 7. Casino A. People can smoke most of time in the casino and the smoke just goes everywhere. It was shocking to see the ship letting people smoke in a close container. There was a little fire on the first night because someone's cigarette butt burned some flammable thing in the garbage/tray. Of course that didn't stop any smokers. B. There could be more table games C. The poker tournament machine was probably used only once That machine took a cut when there were more than 2 people in the tournament. Nobody wanted to play with the machine, and I only knew of one tournament(2-3 people only) at that machine for the entire trip. 8. The disappearance of our fruit basket in the room We were supposed to select what fruit we wanted on a sheet in the basket. Once we filled it, the basket just disappeared. Two days later when I saw our keeper, he told me that he was sorry and just brought me random fruit next day. 9. Manhattan Dining Room I understood that in order to serve food to everyone on the ship, there's no way that the chefs/staffs have time to actually cook/make anything from scratch. Assuming most of meat/fish came from frozen stash, most of food tasted like too much sauce in general. On the first gala night, our group seemed to sit at Bermuda Triangle. Everybody around us got services except us. We had sat there without napkins, drinks, or bread for over 25 min. We had to repeatedly tell the waiters the same information. Luckily, we never sat there again and that seemed to do the trick. *The fact that the dining room doesn't take reservation just created unnecessary traffic and wait outside of the dining area. 10. The excursions are way over priced The whale watching at Juneau was great. We saw quite a few bold eagles, whales, a seal, and some orcas.(e.g. A group of orcas eating a baby seal, a young whale breaching 4 times...) but we paid $170 per person when there were local companies providing $110 for the whale watching or $130 for both the glacier and the whale watching. 11. The karaoke selection and tablets are weird A. First, the tablet doesn't sort things out as it says. Instead of artist, it looked more like a "genre" search at first. B. The selections were extremely old or new(no much in between) and the accompaniments sounded cheap. 12. There could be fewer computers at the library(crow's nest) and more tables for the bar/games. I saw only one person using one computer during my entire trip there, because the majority of people didn't want to pay the over priced internet access fee. There were always more people looking for a place to sit down to drink/play because of the great view over there. Come on, the people who want to bury themselves in front of a computer don't need the best view on the ship! 13. There could be more ping pong tables and fewer private lounge area by the inside pool. Again, nobody wanted to pay the fee to lounge "privately" around an inside pool. For the entire trip, I didn't see anyone using any of the private lounge. 14. There was no culture walking around the ports the ship stopped by Because of the tourists, the same kind of shops just kept popping up. It was better when we found some local trails to explore. The shops in town were just repetitive and boring. 15. There could be more board games at crow's nest After all these, we still had a great time because of the family that travelled with us. That's probably the way to cruise, bringing your own gang to a close container for days. The cruise had lots of potentials, but for some reason, it didn't live up to the expectation we paid for. My husband and I paid $1500 per person for an inside cabin. Our family got two more expensive suites. After comparing the two different levels of suites to our inside cabin, we actually felt great not going for the suites. Now, the good parts about the ship. The ship looked good and durable. The service people are in general very nice and professional. You never go hungry on the ship. The gym was great. Looking at the glacier was the best part during the trip on the ship. But then again, if you go to Canadian Rockies, you can even do the tour (waking) on the glacier. After all, it's pretty safe to say that we'll never go on HAL again. Read Less

Nieuw Amsterdam, Inside Passage Alaska, May 21-28, 2016 Let me say up front this was one of the most disappointing travel experiences I have ever had – and I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively both professionally and privately. We had booked Signature suite 6101 for the cruise. A week before departure we were informed we could upgrade to a Neptune suite for a reduced upgrade fee, which we did. That same day we received new boarding passes and baggage tag inserts for Neptune suite 7055. I am elderly and walk with a cane or with a walker for longer distances. Since boarding would involve considerable walking, and perhaps navigating gangplanks and inclines, I prearranged for a wheelchair for embarkation and debarkation. On the departure morning we turned in our luggage – including my walker – and proceeded to the check-in desks at 10:30 AM. I gave our boarding passes to the HA representative – showing we were in suite 7055. He said we were in suite 6101. I explained we had originally been in suite 6101 but had upgraded to Neptune suite 7055 the week before. He said there was no record of an upgrade I had spare copies of our luggage tags and the boarding passes – all showing suite 7055 – so the change was clearly in the system. I pointed out our luggage had already been checked in with luggage tags showing it was to be taken to suite 7055. He slammed the key cards for suite 6101 down in front of us and said “You’ll have to work that out on board the ship”. When I hesitated to take the key cards for 6101 he said words to the effect “You’re holding up the line. You’ll just have to work it out on board the ship”. Not knowing what else to do, we took the key cards for suite 6101 and set about finding the wheelchair I had arranged That was the beginning of the second bad part of the Holland America experience. There were no wheelchairs to be seen. We inquired of several Holland America personnel and were told to just follow the crowd and there would be a place to get wheelchairs. Finally we entered a large auditorium like area and were directed to a young lady who was entering names for wheelchair passengers on a clipboard. I was number nine on the list. There was apparently only a single individual pushing wheelchairs and it was taking him 15 minutes to get each passenger through security, customs and on board.. It took two hours for him to get to me. We finally reached our stateroom after 1:00 PM, cold, tired, irritated and too late for the promised boarding buffet. Then began the most frustrating part of the Holland America experience. We had purchased four shore excursions; the Tracy Arm trip, the evening whale watching, the luxury coach narrow gauge rail excursion and the float plane and crab feast. The concierge in the Neptune lounge said the tickets would be placed in the mail box outside our stateroom that evening. They weren’t. When we asked about them the next morning, we were assured they would be delivered that morning. They weren’t. Since the first excursion was scheduled for early the next morning, I asked a ship’s officer about them and he said they had been delivered to suite 6101 and they were “trying to retrieve them”. By now we were getting very anxious since without tickets we were going to miss out on shore trips we had paid for. Late that evening tickets did appear in our mailbox prominently marked “Reprints”. By now we had spent two nerve wracking days trying to straighten out problems caused by Holland America’s incompetence and indifference. The cruise was intended to be a relaxing pleasurable experience, but we had been forced to spend our time first getting the correct stateroom keys, then trying to get a wheel chair to board and finally trying to get the shore excursion tickets for which we had prepaid. Like a gullible fool I had believed the advertising about how good the food would be on the cruise. Instead, what we had for every meal for the seven days was cafeteria food. There isn’t much you can do for a breakfast – although eggs Benedict at Brannon’s in New Orleans is a four star experience – but the food in the Lido restaurant was not even up to the quality served at any number of premium motel chains. Never once in the seven days of the cruise did either of us have a meal which caused us to say, that was really good or even pretty good. Several times we wouldn’t eat what was served – the worse being a shrimp and Andouille sausage dish which tasted absolutely awful. The pastries in the Neptune lounge were more nearly stage props than pastries. It was as though someone had looked at pastries in a fine pastry shop, such as Demel’s in Vienna, and decided that a curl of shaved chocolate or a wisp of whipped cream made a fine pastry. But if the pastry underneath is simply a sheet cake it is still a sheet cake when decorated. We tried several before we realized there were no decent pastries. One of the concierge saw me hesitating over the items on display and said that they were going to be putting out some pate – which I like very much. What was put out were curls of a pink paste on crackers which I suspect may have come in an aerosol can. At any rate it bore no resemblance to any pate I have ever seen or tasted. The bottom line is that instead of having an enjoyable culinary experience, for seven days we were reduced to looking for something simply tolerable. Often that was coffee, fruit and an occasional cookie or bit of cheese from the Neptune lounge. After the boarding fiasco I kept my walker with me for debarking which was fortunate since as best I could tell there was no wheelchair even though I had ordered one. The bottom line is that this was one of the most disappointing travel experiences I have ever had. I wouldn’t go on another Holland America cruise if paid to do so Read Less

As a long time HAL Fan we were looking for a quick respite from our busy life. We were stunned at how far HAL had fallen. Service was slow, error prone and wait times for dining were totally unacceptable. We have invested a lot of time with this cruise line, but our conclusion is that either this ship's crew are an anomaly or the corporate office is making significant cuts. Never saw the captain once during the cruise. Dining times took so long, it was impossible to see the shows. Crew seemed harried and unprepared. They lost a bottle of our wine and replaced it with a half used replacement containing less than we had left the night before. Pocket pagers they issued to notify of a table availability, would only work within the deck and about 100 meters. Nowhere to sit because others were waiting as well. One attendant actually suggested that if we thought the wait was too long, we should try the Lido!!!! Read Less

Wasted vacation of my life. Got the worst cruise ever. Thought we'll have some relaxing ang fun cruise but it was the opposite. I'd been to other cruises and we had a great time and met with some fun people. We don't go on vacation very often and spending all this time and money is a big waste. First of all, we did not have a good sleep because of the loud noises of the wind panel, we got too sick and couldn't eat. We just basically stayed in bed and watch every movie on tv, which we could had just done that at home. Fist stop at Victoria, we were too sick and weak to walk around, 2nd stop to Seattle, was the same way, my husband had some stomach pain and we tried to go to the space needle but was still nauseated from the boat so that didnt fan out either, and now here in Vancouver and we just said, finally, we'll start our vacation. We could had just flew here instead of wasting all that time. Read Less

We picked this cruise because of the where was going and Holland's history of great service and great dining. This was my 25th cruise, and it rates as number 25. The dining in the main dining room was terrible. The portions were tiny and the service was horrendous. One night we spent 2 hours waiting to eat. We couldn't get anyone to bring us water, fresh bread, or pour our wine. We finally gave up on the main dining room and paid to go to specialty dining, which was superb. We also tried the Lido, and were completely disappointed. The food was the same every night. The meat was tough, chicken was rubbery and the fish was greasy. The entertainment was below standards. The Beatles tribute band was embarrassing. It took us 3 hours to get off the ship in San Diego. Poor organization, poor security. This cruise was horrible, horrible, horrible. We will never sail with Holland again. Read Less
