Our recent cruise on Costa Cruise line’s 11 day Caribbean Cruise was not a positive experience. While we found the efforts of the wait staff and cabin stewards to be very positive, our interactions with those above that level was found to be more than dissatisfying. We had 2 of our 4 excursions cancelled due to “lack of enough sign ups”, yet discovered the other guests had taken the same excursions with no problems. We also experienced the opposite where we took an excursion and others had been told theirs was cancelled due to “lack of enough sign ups”. We found after the fact, that important information relating to how guests needed to register their credit cards for expenditures while on the cruise, had actually been included in fine print in a list of events for that day. We were put ashore using the ships life rafts at one dock, only to find out at the time of departure for re-boarding that we were to go to a different dock to get back on board. Why hadn’t we been told ahead of time? We found a great difficulty in carrying on a discussion with middle management due to what we perceived to be their lack of communication skills regarding their policies. The lack of variation in menu for breakfasts and lunches was noticeable. As well, even though they had frozen yogurt machines at every buffet counter, none had the dispenser heads on them during the entire cruise. When asked about this, we were told we could “buy” ice cream bars from a machine dispenser at one of the pool areas. Compared to other cruises taken in the past, there was a noticeable dearth of quality entertainment on board for those days at sea. All in all, it was quite apparent that the Costa Cruise line is experiencing some major financial crises and is cutting corners at every opportunity to them. Our experiences varied considerably from experiences on other cruise lines. We will definitely not be on any future passenger manifest of Costa Cruise line. Read Less

My husband and I purchased the 10-day Caribbean Christmas cruise, embarking from the Miami Port on Dec 17th, returning on Dec 27th. Was the ship beautiful? Of course! Did we like our suite, butler & cleaning service? Absolutely! (Great job Dave & Jeyson!) What we didn't care for was the cuisine and the company we were in. I am not speaking of the staff.....all of Costa's crew was well-trained (to the best of their language ability). Oh speaking of language....you better check your "ability to be patient" at the door, because all PA announcements (as well as Theater greetings and salutations) were given in at least 6 languages......Whoa!! Way too much information and PA noise!! So, if you are an American cruising on an Italian ship-line, (even when it's sailing in what we consider to be primarily an American market....the Caribbean) ......be prepared.....this cruise line caters 100% to the Italians and it's neighboring countries in all amenities and aspects of the ship. This is what you can expect when cruising with a European cruise-line (or at least with Costa). Oh....did I mention smoking is permitted "inside" the ship in public spaces? It was like we were in a time warp.....For a smoker (regardless of culture) I know this would be music to your ears....(I know, I used to be one).....but, we are both non-smokers and didn't enjoy slicing through the billowing clouds of cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke as we walked from one venue to the next. We met perhaps 2 other American couples saying this was their first and no doubt their last to cruise with Costa. Their comments were identical to ours....."where is the food" "Why did they close the buffet on Lido deck so early?" "Why are there so few carving stations"?, and why are they so stingy with the 110 volt outlets? (and we were in a Grand Veranda!!) More about their food. Tiny little flaky tasteless pastries as far as the eye can see, and the only thing differentiating one from the next was the shape, and icing design. (They need to sample our Cinnabons in America, huh?) One morning we ordered breakfast in our room, asked for white and wheat toast.....we got white and wheat dinner rolls Last and certainly not least.......I am proud to say as an American.....one of the very first things that was so glaringly obvious to us was the following: Americans are by far and away the friendliest, most considerate, empathetic and passionate people walking this planet. The general interaction with Italians in the food lines or at an elevator bank or at a busy bar or around a crowded pool deck, was the feeling of being rushed, pushed, shoved, hurried and simply disrespected. Their lack of concern for others was so obvious. One morning during the peak breakfast hour I stood in a fairly long line to fill my coffee mug, and when I finally reached the front of the line, a young woman "speaking Italian fluently", rushed up to the front of the line with her cup leading the way to the coffee spout. I politely asked her to step aside, that I had been in line waiting long before her.....she glared at me like I was being rude for speaking my mind. She was speechless. (I have to admit, I was enjoying the moment somewhat). So, if you are a world-traveler, and understand the Italian way of life, and are hoping to lose a few pounds on your cruise, sail with Costa!! We'll be shopping American cruise lines only from here on out!    Read Less

It was a great experience sailing on Luminosa especially as it was a relatively new ship at the time of our cruise from May 4 to 13, 2010. Features-spacious, full of interesting and attractive decor, awesome Buddha in the central plaza, I love it! I also enjoyed the top quality service. We didn't hesitate to give our steward 30 Euros for his patience, efficiency and friendly manner! This despite the fact we prepaid our tips when we booked. We also gave out Aussie souvenirs which were gratefully appreciated by the staff from the stewards to the restaurant Maitre D' and other crewship workers. Food was also appetising most of the time except when there are long lines and crowds during peak hours in the buffet. The formal dining rooms are a great alternative so we enjoyed their use the whole time we were there. We hardly ate anything while taking the bus tours to various ports, etc..We knew there were nice food waiting for us at the ship anyway! NEgatives- the smoking ban in the lounges are not properly ensured. Many Italians especially act as if they own the ship and so usually bring the ash trays to any table they like! It was a horrible sight, the smoke billowing from the lounges even if we were just passing through to get to the show lounge/theatre or other decks. It was awful! Also the lack of space during shows. The first seating and second seating arrangement did not seem to work here as both groups seem to be present at the shows! There was always a lack of seating so I ended up always going back to the cabin, I refused to stay standing up watching a mediocre show anyway! So entertainment was really nothing much to rave about. The ship was clean and well cared for. Staff very nice, I even tipped extra. The food however was horrible. Very few dinning choices and most had an extra cost to eat such as hamburger or even a pizza. I get that if you want something that cost more like lobster but a hamburger really? Speaking of the lobster one of our group members tried it. He said it looked green and slimy and thought that was just how it was prepared. It was hard to tell because of how bad the food was everywhere else. He ended up with food poisoning as well as my wife whom had eating some eggs. The serving times where so short that you had nowhere to sit and eat. The staff even stopped the serving lines 15 to 20 minutes early so many time we went with out eating. No big loss their. They allowed smoking on most of the ship including dinning areas so you couldn't get fresh air. We even had my own balcony but we couldn't even use that because our neighbors smoked on the balcony next to us. We totally waisted our money. They also have several hidden charges that we discovered later. Geev Galvez and his helper Charle Ramirez. They worked in the main dinnig room for the special dinner. The service was spot on. Drinks before we even had to ask for them and offered different food choices as they notced people not eating the food. Not their falt on the food qulity but they did their best. Other service in restraunts was good to vary poor. We ate one night at the pizza / hambeger place and after asking 6 times to get someting to drink we all took turns to go to the buffet to get drinks and come back. We never did get any drinks that we didn't go get our selfs. Read Less

you think about a relaxed vacasion, fine entertainment, nice cabin, ship in good shape, interesting excursions, see new countries, meet nice people, have a good time? Nothing of all we found at a world-cruis with Costa Luminosa, starting 5. of Januar 19 till now (30.03.19). Explanation: the averig of the guest ist probably 75, that means we travelled with a lot of guests older than 90. Nothing against old people, but that is a special thing, severel in Wheel-chairs, probably 60% of them are sick, and we and almost all the other guests get also sick, for weeks, we called it finally the "Costa sickness", worst cough, fever, inflamed eyes, even people who never get sick otherwise, got sick, mostly for weeks The ship is old and in bad shape, old dirty carpeting, lamps, floors, dishes, we had a "Samsara cabin with balcony", Samsara means you get free entrance to the spa, be aware, maybe you get there some virus there (ist ugly dirty) You want to drink a free coffee at 06.15: bad luck, wait till 07:00 or make one yourself in the cabin (capsules), You want water to drink, you have to buy it, 12 bottle for US 36,-- (packet) You want Internet: you have to buy it, but you will be surpriced, often it is not working and the Connection is so terrible, that I could´dt never open my Banking account, I had to wait for land, Looking there vor a Restaurant and asked for Internet. Looking for a movie at night; you get one (1) per day, there is nothing more The tour plan itself: we got around 60 see-days (from together 112), that means we sit at the ship waiting for the next Landing, sometimes we had 5 see-days on a row, often we had to be at 05.00 p.m. back Ankering: we think Costa wants save Money, so the ship is ankering instead of pear, that causes you wait for the tender boat and the last tender boat is 04:00, There are other 10 Things to write, but ist not worth the time. Now why is my Rating one Point and not sero? The Food is good and the Service People try their best Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the indoor pool. Pool was closed for planned maintenance for the full week! Noone informed us it would be closed. Majority of the English speaking excursions were cancelled and there were very few things for English speakers on board. Again Noone informed us there would be a chance of the excursions being cancelled. Be warned you have to pay for EVERYTHING on this ship. Food is only served at specific timings. You have to pay for water. Also, staff is not so friendly. The overall attitude of the staff is down like they do not want to be there. We were reprimanded for using a different glass for our milk in the morning and we were also told we could not have a second entree. After arguing he only agreed. Maybe this is how all European cruises are but I do not think so. If you have a choice steer clear of Costa Cruises and opt for any other cruiseline. Read Less

It was my 50th birthday this year & to celebrate we chose a Miami 3 night stay & Western Caribbean cruise with Celebrity through Cruise 365. There were 8 of us on the holiday (family) & we had a truly amazing time from start to finish. It was our first time cruising & everything from the Art Deco hotel in Miami to our time on the Celebrity Equinox was perfect. We had such a fantastic experience that when we returned my Wife & I decided to book another cruise & stay holiday for just the two of us later in the year. We compared several deals through Planet Cruise, Iglu & Cruise 365. We wanted a cruise deal that took in destinations that we hadn't previously visited & eventually found what we thought looked like a great deal with Iglu. It was a 12 night cruise & stay deal which included a 3 night stay in Lake Garda, 2 night stay in Venice & a 7 day cruise on the Costa Luminosa. We boarded the ship on the Saturday afternoon which took around 1.5 hours. The buffet food was pretty much the same every day & very much like school or canteen dinners. Some of the stations weren't open. We had set dining in the restaurant at 18.45 but this wasn't much better unfortunately. The food was very average & the choice seemingly aimed exclusively at the Italians. As a result we only ate in the restaurant once. You had to pay extra for things like pizza, burgers & steak. We had a drinks package but this didn't include water. Coffee was only available from the drinks machine in the mornings. The ship felt a bit scruffy & most of the staff seemed a bit miserable. The entertainment was ok on 2 or 3 nights but dire for the rest of the time. I think there were about 1900 people on the ship with no more than around a dozen English people. There were over 1600 Italians. This wasn't a problem for us other than we found them to be very loud, quite ignorant & lacking in manners. At mealtimes it became a bit of a free for all. We enjoyed most of the destinations but the timings weren't particularly great. The ship had a bad vibration for long periods of time making the experience uncomfortable. Overall, the cruise was a huge disappointment. None of what we experienced was special in any way & didn't compare to the amazing experience we had with Celebrity although the price we paid was very similar. Our verdict: Sorry Costa but if you want to provide a positive cruise experience then you need to see how Celebrity do it. If this had been our first cruise it would most certainly have been our last. Never again with Costa. Read Less

Too many people.Too many italians. Too many childs. At the restaurant slow service and bad food and wine, Buffet with limited choice and poor quality. Difficult to find a seat at the buffet. Absolutely unsatisfactory breakfast. Cabins not cleaned well and ready only after 1 or 2 p.m. Rude staff at the reception desk. Poor entertainement and excursions too expensive. Slow and confusing boarding procedures. Difficult to find a seat during the shows. Approximate cleaning of common areas. Staff completely insufficient for the size of the ship. Long waits to talk to someone at the reception. No information provided to those who do not buy the excursions and who want to use public transport. You have to pay for everything. Bad experince overall. Definitively we have spent a lot of money to get a similar treatment to a scheduled ferry. Excluding Rome, the itinerary is not so interesting. Never again! Any usefull information to save money: MARSEILLE: use the free shuttle bus provided by the port Authority (500 yd from ship); BARCELONA: use the PUBLIC shuttle bus from cruise terminal; PALMA: use the PUBLIC BUS from cruise terminal to city center; CAGLIARI: the city center is just in front of you. Visit the city by yourself; ROMA: Be careful not to use unauthorized taxis. Best way is to go to ROMA SANPIETRO by train (www.trenitalia.com). Alternatively you may buy the only trasportation with a bus company at exit of the port. Read Less

I am returning from a Costa Cruise on Costa Luminosa. I spent ca. $10,000 for a suite, a cabin with a balcony and on board extras. This was my first time with Costa. Although I did enjoy my food experience in the special restaurant that is assigned in my category, I will NOT travel Costa in the future for the following reasons: - it is not until I wrote to Costa that I got an itemized onboard expenses summary. - it is impossible to sleep well on board as their ships don't seem to be sound proof. More specifically: cabin doors at poorly designed and people tend to party in the hallway. I did not have a noise problem on Celebrity or Royal Carribeans. - the spa was huge (a big plus) but it is not relaxing at all: my first treatment was poorly scheduled as I could not participate in the mandatory drill. - it is not easy to have the staff stick to the price that was discussed at the spa. Sorry Costa: I do like the italian vibes of the people onboard, but it was not relaxing at all considering all the money I spent. Read Less

Sadly this cruise was advertised as all inclusive, meaning water and food should be included. Water was at specific unclear times available on a different deck that we were not stationed on, the food during breakfast and lunch, which one could receive after standing in line with many unhappy customers was absolutely disgusting. Dinner was served at a specific time that was assigned to one by chance, if one failed to report to the dining hall within 15 minutes of the beginning of the dinner time one would have to deal with being locked out of the hall. Thus one had to resource to eating at a highly expensive other restaurant located on the ship, each restaurant service was unfriendly and in-comprehensive leading to food poisoning on two occasions. Upon asking for a manager or any person of sort we were greeted with unfriendly hostesses who would become defensive and aggressive. Bookings on the "Costa Card" were incorrect on occasion and additional charges were not removed upon request though many items were double booked. The swimming areas and showers were filthy as well as the deck being unkept and not taken care of. Staff appeared completely untrained in terms of hospitality as in acting aggressively towards simple questions, being completely unable to serve food, communicate with guests and responding politely. None of the people at any information desks were informed in any way about any of the procedures on board, as an experienced traveler who was accompanied by a person has been active in hospitality businesses for years both managing and leading restaurants and bars of well known names in Vienna, this whole vacation which ended up costing over 4.000 for eight days for two people, this was an organized rip off scheme planned by management that hid behind their staff. The major amounts of disinformation were widespread among guests on board leading to a very depressed and frustrated atmosphere. This was for us, and our friends the first and definetely last experience with costa. Read Less

have been on lots of cruises and this was so bad I cut it short and travelled back to the UK as I was so desperate to get away from the horrific experience, The cruise was a rip off and everything was geared towards getting as much money from you as possible No/little entertainment on board so we decided to play the daily bingo - no thanks it was buy 2 tickets and get 2 free at £40! Yes £40 for a game of bingo so gave that a miss and just wandered aimlessly about the ship with nothing to do. Husband decided to have a game of poker - £16 a hand so easily lost £100 in a couple of minutes once again could not afford to continue with that rip off activity, Trips were extortionate £112 for a ride into Rome when the train fare was only £13 return. No information on board the ship so we did not know what was going on - yes we understand that it is an Italian cruise line but could some things not have been told in English for the benefit of British customers? The ship was rammed to bursting, nowhere to sit in the evening and the drinks package was £175 each everyone in the cabin had to have the package even though I do not drink alcohol so it was expensive for me for a couple of soft drinks and coffee. The food was disgusting, portion sizes small and took hours for the food to arrive. I am a vegan and even though I was guaranteed vegan food, the most imaginative they could come up with was a plate of grilled vegetables and cold undercooked chips again and again and again and again.......Never again will I go on a costa cruise be warned. Costa cruises are only worth considering if you can buy one really cheaply and forget any notion that you'll get good service and be treated like a guest. On the positive side the dinner service and food was quite reasonable, unfortunately everything else is very sub standard. The impression is that the company is struggling to make a profit and therefore is charging extra for everything it can get away with and reducing staffing levels to such a point that you simply have to wait for ages to get a drink or food. We've been on 4 cruises with them in the last 5 years and each time the experience has been worse. For example this time the following stands out (only a selection from many poor experiences) Very, very slow service at breakfast, typically 40 minutes at least from placing an order (once you've had your order taken which again can be very slow) - on days where there are early excursions lots of people were walking out without hot food as they otherwise would have missed their departure. Very few waiters and very hard to get a coffee or tea and subsequent top up at breakfast. No bottled water at all, even though we'd paid 25 Euro for all inclusive drinks No tea or coffee available most of the day Bizarre 'Captain's cocktail reception' held in the theatre with one canape each (if you were lucky) - why invite people to a 'reception' if you can't be bothered to entertain them? In general you may think you're getting a cheap holiday but it won't be worth it, everyone we met from Italy, Spain,Scandinavia, USA, Mexico etc. were surprised at how poor the experience was compared to other cruise lines. There's also strange discrimination between some guests and others, maybe depending on where you come from. For example you get put on the early Dinner service by default and have to beg for a late sitting - the Maitre De told us this was because we were not in the right level. We did get transferred on the second night (having had to sit on our own the first night - we like to meet people - isn't that part of a cruise?) and the people we joined had also been moved after complaining - one couple from the USA and one couple from Mexico - they clearly could not understand how Costa treat guests and I felt a little embarrassed to be European. Final straw was on departure day - our flight was at 18:10 and despite this we were told we had to be clear of our cabin by 08:00 and leave the ship at 09:30. I thought they'd made a mistake as there were much later departure times for other 'guests' with late flights. Turns out if you haven't booked a Costa airport transfer you are not entitled to stay any later - that really is money grasping at its worst! I would never cruise with Costa again and strongly suggest you avoid them - Costa may save you a few pounds but is it really worth it when you're on holiday? Read Less

I have been on several cruise ships (Royal, Carnival, Norwegian) and this last one on Costa. I will not even try to compare them because they have very little in common. I will start off with embarkment in Miami. We were scheduled to embark at 1300hours in Miami. It was a hot and humid day and they had no lines clearly marked, no water or shade provided for the elderly or kids. The line at one point looked like a herd of buffallos stampedeing towards the ship and my 2 year old was over run by some guy trying to get to the ship first. Once on the ship we got our cabin pretty soon and were happy to learn that we actually got a obstructed ocean view instead of inside cabin. Our room steaward introduced herself and that is the friendliest we saw her the whole trip. Every time she would come in the room she had a frown on her face and was very short with her answers. She knew we were traveling with two young children and never once asked if we needed anything. At one point she took the milk that we brought from the buffet into the fridge and threw it out. I asked several time for diaper bags and was never provided with one so i had to go to the elevators and dispose dirty diapers in there. The dinners were the only free option and you had to be there on time or else you missed it and had to either pay for the pizza or specialty restaurants. (big minus). the whole duration of the trip they had the ice cream machines in the buffet area but never served ice cream out of them.... (teasing the passengers???). It being a european ship it attracted a lot of Europeans and it seemed like everone on the ship smoked. (something i have no control over but something to consider when choosing your hard earned vacation cruise). The ship had no real children program for any kids under 3 years old and we did not expect it. However, I would have loved to seee the option of dining with children in buffet area because dining with little children in a formal setting is not the best. The ports were all nice although at some points it seemed a little unorganized. To summarize our experience I would have to say if they had better crew and more caring crew members it would be a more pleasent way to travel. I will definitely not travel with Costa ever again. We do a lot of cruising. We cruised 7 times this past year and usually love it. We are not picky. We usually eat in the buffets on board, so you know that we can't be that picky. We have cruised many times on Royal Caribbean (not as good as it was several years ago), Norwegian and Carnival. The ship was 90% international travelers, which did not bother us. Matter of fact we became good friends with some German couples that we meet on board. What bothered us the most that there is no place to eat on this ship after 6 pm unless you want to pay. From 2:30 until 5:30 or 6 pm you may get some salad, terrible pizza and some lunch meat sandwiches, but that is it. If you don't want to eat in the dining room then you starve until the next morning. Dinner takes 2 hours. The rolls must be leftover from breakfast because you could use them as baseballs. We found in the morning they are very good. It is the same menu every day in the buffet for breakfast. At least they did have an omelet station. Cold cereal is not in boxes, but dumped in a plastic bin. I can only imagine how stale the cereal is by the end of the cruise. Be aware that the difference between a premium balcony and a classic balcony on the website is that you can receive a full breakfast in your cabin for free each morning. Since we did not want a full breakfast, only coffee, we did not upgrade. Little did we know that that meant you couldn't even get coffee in your room unless you paid $7 per person. There is no place on the ship to get coffee BEFORE the buffet opens in the morning. You have to wait until they officially open the coffee pots each morning to get any. At dinner they had been charging $7 per bottle to get water at dinner. They said that so many Americans had complained on previous cruises that they provided all Americans, and Canadians, with the dinner water package. It was marked "US water" on our cards. So nice of them. That meant that you could get water by the glass, no ice, when you could get someone to give it to you. Trying to find a seat in the buffet was nearly impossible. Often we asked an officer why there was no seating to be told that there was. Our reply was, "Find us a seat then", which they couldn't. It seems that many people would sit there and drink their wine with lunch and never leave. Also, many tables for 6-8, but few for 2-4, which meant that there were many seats not being utilized properly. Everything done on the ship was done in 5-6 languages. The boat drill was held at 10:15 at night because the ship leaves at 11 pm. This is one of the few ships that still makes you put on a life vest and stand in lines on the deck. The drill took forever because it had to be done in each of the 6 languages. Port days were a mess. There was never an announcement of where to go to get off the ship. Sometimes you would go down the midship elevators to be told when there to the forward elevators. Would have been nice to have had some information. The room steward and our server were nice, but all other staff were not. They really didn't want to be bothered by anyone. There seemed to be a lot of officers doing nothing, while a few regular staff did all of the work. Many of the staff stated that there used to be a buffet at night, but that they took it away. Guess they wanted to save money. They have many soft serve ice cream machines, none of which were ever working while we were on the ship. They do have a freezer next to one ice cream machine from which you can BUY an ice cream bar. Now you know why none of the machines work. When we booked the cruise all of the reviews available were either from their European cruises or the transatlantic cruise. We were hoping that that trips in the states would be better, but not so. If we had seen the latest reviews we wouldn't have booked this cruise. The debarkation process was a disaster. We did not get off the ship until 1:30 pm!! They blamed it on US customs, but I am not really sure that that was the problem. You do immigration on board since you do not return to the same dock from which you embarked. Luggage is in a tent, not a terminal. Overall this cruise line is not what most cruisers expect from a cruise line. Even the Europeans were disappointed with the amenities on the ship that one usually expects. DON"T GO ON THIS CRUISE LINE IF YOU HAVE EVER CRUISED BEFORE!!!!!   Read Less

I had read the bad reviews here before going, but we still took this ship ONLY because of the combination of ports it was visiting. I found the bad reviews were completely true. We took the Costa Luminosa as the second of three cruises we did (one right after the other). The first was the Carnival Valor, which is the Luminosa's sister ship (Both cruise lines are owned by Carnival Corporation). Our stateroom was literally identical to the one we had on the Carnival Valor. The best part of the ship were the Filipino housekeeping staff and waiters. They did try hard to please passengers. However, the rest of the crew (mostly Europeans) didn't seem to care if passengers did not like the service or facilities. The North Americans (Canadian and Americans) I found aboard seemed amazed at the horrible customer service. The staff showed little flexibility. It would never be tolerated in a North American hotel. The disembarkation process each time was much slower than Carnival and seemed overly bureaucratic. This ship was primarily filled with Europeans visiting the Caribbean. English speakers only made up about 10% of the passengers - while the majority were French, Italian, and German. Announcements on board were usually in 5 languages. I have been to Europe several times and enjoy visiting there. However, something seems to happen to these people when they come to North America in a group. They were some of the rudest people I have ever met. Very rarely did I ever hear them say "excuse me" (not even in their own language) when they frequently pushed by. They were also notorious for butting into lines (with the French being the worst). I got the distinct feeling throughout the cruise that Costa was "nickel and diming" passengers and trying to cut costs to help pay for the huge financial bill from the Costa Concordia disaster (which is literally going to cost them a few billion dollars). Things that were free on Carnival were often unavailable, or, offered for a charge on Costa. For example, on Carnival, soft serve ice cream is available 24/7 for free. On Costa, the machines had parts obviously removed (to make them permanently inoperable) with pay-for ice cream bar machines beside them. The crew told me the soft serve machines are never used. I got the feeling that Costa was told by the mother company they must have the machines, but the Costa staff made sure they were not operable so customers had to pay for it. Drinks were also each a few dollars more on Costa compared to Carnival. Another sign that Costa was cutting corners to save money was in the t.v. channels they offered in cabins. No CNN or BBC. If you wanted English news it was from Japan's NHK English service. Even the Spanish got the Spanish language service of Russian Television. There were no free movies on t.v. either. On Carnival, if a passenger did not want to go to a formal night they could still eat in casual attire at a nice buffet on the top deck. On Costa, if you did not attend the formal night then your only other option was mediocre pizza for $8 on the top deck. The casual buffet was closed at dinner time, and there was no dinner-time room service. The food at the breakfast and lunch buffets was like eating in a high school cafeteria. Everyone had to choose between an early sitting at dinner (at 6:30 p.m.) or a late sitting (at 9:00 p.m.). You have to preselect them and they are fixed for the remainder of the cruise, as you are seated at large tables with others. There was no option to eat dinner when you wanted to. Quite often we returned from shore excursions late and missed the first part of our early sitting. Lucky for us, we had a nice group of 4 other English speaking-couples at our table. Do you desire soft bread at dinner? Too bad, if you don't like hard bread you get none. The price for internet use was about $14 an hour and the ship-to-shore phone was $7.95 A MINUTE (even to the nearby U.S.). Most of the ship's passengers were in their 50's to 70's and the ship still seemed crowded and loud. We literally had to stay in our cabin if we wanted a quiet place. The same size Carnival ship had adult areas, and you could find quiet areas around the ship both inside and outside. Carnival had wooden decks outside. Instead, Costa saved money by painting it's all-metal decks to look like they were wooden. The Luminosa also has a pathetically small jogging track. The ship's library was small and crammed with pay-for computer terminals. There was no evening movie played on the big screen (by the pool) at night either. The Jacuzzi tubs always seemed crowded when we went. In summary, we will never sail on a Costa ship again due to it's lack of customer service, it's penny-pinching, and rude European passengers. Consider ourselves seasoned cruisers (25years) for some time. Costa Cruise Lines was by far the worst ever experience we have ever had. The food was horrible, if you missed your scheduled dinning room seating...you had to pay 8.00 for the buffet pizza which had no cheese nor topping on it. They shut down the juice and water machines after breakfast and lunch forcing you to buy drinks or water. None of the ice cream machines worked. The staff was somewhat cordial, only when you made the effort to be nice. Most of the time you felt they were doing you a favor. Since we only speak English...all the shows were in a foreign language, so we did not enjoy that. The pools and hot tubs were very small and over crowded. Not enough chairs or lounge chairs on the deck to accomodate the passengers. Lesson learned. Read Less

Costa Luminosa trans-Atlantic Dec 2 - 20, 2014. A very disappointing cruise. Before the cruise we understood the drink packages were confusing and that was true. Water was not available in the dining room unless you bought a water package or brought your own bottle that you may have been able to fill during the breakfast or lunch hours at the buffet. Also cocktails or specialty coffee drinks were not available in the dining room even if you had purchased the drink package. Passengers had to obtain the drink or coffee at one of the available bars. So the evening meal had passengers carrying their own bottles or glasses which can be difficult while cruising, and the dining room became more of a buffet looking experience rather than a place to be waited on. For the most part the food was below expectations and the service was very slow. Often the entertainment in the dining room happened before the entrees arrived. The most memorable part of the entire time was the lines. Two hours for embarkation and 3 hours for disembarkation is excessive. Every port stop also had lines even at the quay side ports. Watching the staff stopping reembarking passengers while crew disembarked, or stopping the entire process to watch passengers with disabilities struggling up or down gangways with no help from Costa was very disturbing. If there were any service issues, Costa staff was not interested in resolving them. It took a service manager to do any correction. It got very old to hear "not our policy" from the staff. I also noticed a lack of concern or interest in any issues raised by an American on this cruise. The bias of the staff was very evident during the 3 hour disembarkation. When you purchase suite accommodations, an expectation of service goes with it. Costa did not deliver. We had a cruise on Costa Magica in 2006 will no issues, and have traveled on 40+ cruises by Carnival, NCL, RCCL, Oceania, Viking and Uniworld lines. We will never cruise Costa again.   Read Less

I was thrilled to be going on a cruise for Christmas. Arriving in Miami and seeing the ship , I was very excited because the ship was beautiful. Once we reached our cabin there was a full bed. WMy son had booked the cruise and requested separate beds. We asked for it to be changed and were asked if we could sleep together for the night. What? I don't want to sleep with my son. Next, the air condition did not work, however the steward kept trying to convince us that it was working. They finally admitted three days later that they were having a problem. Then we had a premium cabin which we were told by the person that booked the cruise included free room service and free breakfast in the cabin. Customer service told us basically that we were lying (this was our first time on Costa cruise how would we have known this). Next, we ordered water USA which gave us free water during meals. However, we found out that breakfast is not a meal and were charged for water. Things kept going on like this. I understand that this was an European cruise, but you allowed other nationalities to board and should consider this. Customer Service was horrible, many people were complaining about the service. My son lost his phone and he was told that a passenger had stolen it and it would not be returned by an employee. She worked with the pictures and continued to tell us how the passengers steal pictures all time. Really, this is not what we want to hear. As an American, I give the total Costa Cruise a 2 out of 10. My waiter Dee Dee was great! But thank God for French fries. Definitely will go back to American Cruise lines. Read Less

The ship is beautiful I have to admit, cabin attendant was terrific, our room was always spotless and so was the ship. BUT it was a full cruise and there were not enough waiters and bar staff to handle the passengers. You felt rushed at dinner, and I guess that's ok, since the food was so bad, you couldn't eat several of the courses. Appatizers were ok, soup and salad they can't mess up but the entrée was terrible. Very small portions, and some of what we got didn't even look like what we ordered. For an Italian ship I was very upset that all the pasta dishes were so under cooked and gummy, and cold. The waiter at our table could have cared less, and as we did, most of the passengers complained about the food. The buffet was just as bad, and we stopped going for breakfast since everything was cold and under cooked. We feel that food and service is 50% of a good cruise experience. And this one left a very bad taste in our mouths, litteraly. Read Less

This was my first cruise with Costa and last as many others on that ship expressed. I cruised with Royal, Carnival and MSC before and never had a bad experience. My family is not picky but the service is awful except the cabinet steward who was so nice to me and the kids and the upgrade we received without asking to a balcony. The food is awful and the activities are limited. People at our table left the dinner table the 1st 2 nights of the cruise because everything they ordered was bad. The quality some what improved slightly after that. After the nightly show there is absolutely nothing to eat and no food stations are open except the "soggy" pizza station which if you try it once will not go there again. Even the Italian's on board had the same opinion. Table Tennis, Footsball, and mini golf are for fee. The captain never bothered to welcome us on board on loud speaker like the custom on other cruises is. We saw a glimpse of him when he came down to waive at us the last gala night. Gala dinners (2) where exactly the same. No lobster like on carnival or Royal, nothing special except the free glass of Champagne. At breakfast or lunch you can not find a place to sit at the buffet . The ship is narrower than the other we sailed on before and we had to take the food to a bench outside to eat. The breakfast in the main dining room is exactly the same as the buffet , the only difference is they bring you the coffee and juice the rest of the food is a buffet style so go and get it. The worst of all they have no ATM on board and you can not get any money off the credit card on file so if you ran out of money. Tough luck. I will never sail on Costa again. Waste of money and time.
