Crosieres as sales agent failed to give us important details such as the programs on the cruise till the last moment. The standard answer was ýou will get it with the ticket' which arrived 72 hours before the trip commenced. By that time all important excursions were already booked by other guests. This means other guests knew how to book excursions but Croiseres as agent never told us despite my repeated asking about it !! We chose and paid for two window view cabins. To our horror we were given cabins 4297 and 4323, both of which had large motors installed outside the windows. Thus the views of these windows were completely blocked !! I have attached the photo for readers quick reference. After boarding the cruise the hospitality desk the staff completely disowned there responsibility to change the cabins. We explained to them that our payment and booking of the cabins were confirmed for open views of the windows. Costa hospitality staff refused to give us alternate cabins. Eventually we had to go for higher category of balcony cabins 7232 and 7235 for which we had to pay extra 500 Euro for each cabin. This was a totally unacceptable behaviour of Costa Staff towards the guests. We felt we have been exploited and cheated by Costa and its agent Croisieres. On the final day of return we were diverted to Trieste port. We repeatedly told Mr Alex, who was coordinating the disembarkation process, to give us a coach connection to the Venice Airport as we had our onward flight to Vienna at 2,45pm on 8th June. He promised us that this has been arranged and he gave us Red B exit baggage tags to confirm the same. When we tried to board the coach for Venice, Costa's staff Mr Fabio, another Costa staff, forced us to take our luggages out of the coach. He showed us a passenger list which didn't include cabins 7232 and 7235 for transfer to Venice airport ! This gives us a feeling that either Alex mislead us throughout promising the coach transfer to Venice airport or Fabio behaved as a very rude staff completely disowning Costa's responsibility to take us to Venice. It must be mentioned that Costá Luminosa was delayed by 3hr and 30 mins while returning and it dropped the customers at Trieste, 150 km away form the contractual disembarkation port of Venice'. Eventually we had a take a taxi from Trieste to Venice airport to catch our flight. We had to spend 300€ for this emergency taxi trip simply because Cosat couldn’t return to Venice port by the scheduled time! On the whole it was a very bad cruise with Costa. ...'Never Cruise again with Costa' is our conclusion. Read Less

This was a group trip that I decided to go on. There weren’t many staff members who spoke English well enough and getting answers to many questions was challenging. Many of the European guests were very rude, often pushy and cutting lines during meal times at the buffet, ignoring dress codes and walking in with wet swimsuits and towels or robes to the buffet. There was not much of a variety of meals. Most of the meals consisted of an enormous amount of bread and pastries. Perhaps that is the European way but, we Americans definitely were not accustomed to the food preparations. Several of my companions and I (27 in total) had been on numerous cruises before so this was highly unusual that there wasn’t a larger variety of international food. Also the buffet closed at 830pm nightly so if you were hungry after hours be prepared to pay. It was my birthday week so I was hoping for a great time. Our waiter George in the dining room was often rude, once complaining to us that he wasn’t feeling well and was working longer than he should have been (8 months) and should have been allowed to go home. Really??!! Several times our food was being served so slowly and at lukewarm temperatures might I add, that it was interfering with the next seating and we were asked to leave before the meal was completed. This put a damper on our trip as we had great expectations based on previous cruises. I’m not saying that other cruise lines are without fault but I felt a little put off by the lack of hospitality. I felt a little racial bias when it came to bar service. We were passed over while we arrived at the bar waiting our turn while someone not like me was helped immediately upon arriving at the bar. We had to tell them that we were waiting first.. I will say that we did meet several very nice and interesting people on the cruise. But there is so much more to complain about but why bother. Needless to say I won’t be traveling on Costa cruise line again. Read Less

My mother and I traveled on Costa Luminosa from Venice to Greek Islands ( August 24 - September 1). This was our first cruise so we went with an open mind and not really knowing what to expect. We had a balcony room thank goodness I can't imagine a room without a balcony - so that was a positive. Waking up and having a coffee on the balcony was really nice. We are Canadian - English speaking and found language to be a barrier most of the time. Some cruise employees knew English but far and few between and when we needed assistance the limited English on board became an issue. Be prepared to hear a lot of Italian by fellow cruisers and employees - They do announce things in English but it is not very clear and can be easily missed. Overall, I found the Italians to be rude on board - pushy and always butting in line and smoking in your face. The food at the buffet was nothing special. I have stayed at all inclusive resorts for fraction of the cost with better food. Trying to find a seat at the buffet was impossible most days we had to sit with other people and the tables then became crammed. That being said the Taurus restaurant for dinner always had a good and unique selection. Rooms service was good - always cleaned on time and enough room to be comfortable. Drink package - this DOES NOT mean alcohol - the only thing that is included in the base fair is water from the tap..... I did not know this and my travel agent did not advise me of this. Juices, pops, coffee, tea , cappuccino is all extra - if this is something you want I would look into that drink package. A coffee in the morning in the room cost 1.55 Euros..... botttle of water 3.00 Euro. The Ports we traveled to were all unique and different - also know that you can get same excursions on land as what Costa offers for fraction of the cost.... once you get into port there are locals and agencies who have same tours - we never had an issue doing tours this way. Overall I wouldn't travel Costa again due to lack of food quality, language barrier and felt like because we weren't Italian we were looked down upon. Pack your patience if you travel Costa..... When arriving on the ship there was a lot of confusion and our rooms were not ready. Once getting into our rooms it took another 2 hours for my bag to arrive. There was many things that were not included on this cruise which is not stated on the website. The entertainment was really bad. I have been on 3 cruises before this one and could not believe how boring the entertainment was. For good entertainment and value for money I would go on the Royal Caribbean again. I have been on the Royal Caribbean 3 times now and I can never fault it. There was not much to do for the children and the entertainment during the day was very boring. The food was also bad. When ordering meals you were unsure of what each one was and it would come out looking like it was chucked on the plate. When waiting to get a drink it took forever to find someone to order. Most of the time we just gave up and didn't order any drinks. I went on the cruise with my sister and her family and having them for company was good. It is a good cruise if you just want to relax as there isn't much happening when you are on the boat. Read Less

I took my 18 year old granddaughter on the cruise for a graduation present. I usually go on the Princess Line (although I had been on two other Costa cruise many years ago) but this cruise fit our timing and most of the ports we wanted to visit. I cannot say enough about how bad the food and service (in the restaurants) was: * The buffet lines are very long (we stood in line for 30 minutes several times) and you have to stand in different lines for different items (same for beverages - they do not take your drink order). *In the sit down restaurant for dinner, the service was really bad. One night my granddaughter received her entrée when others received their salad. One man at our table received his entrée when others received their dessert. *In the sit down restaurant for breakfast they do offer a limited menu that you can order from and they also have a small buffet set up. It is impossible to get a waiter to take your breakfast order so we ended up going to the buffet in the restaurant (at least we were seated and didn't have to hunt for a seat like you have to do in the buffet restaurant). *Coffee and tea isn't served/offered after breakfast. You need to go to a bar area and pay after breakfast. * They charge for pizza (not available until 7 pm), ice cream and hamburgers. They do offer a hamburger at the grill by the pool but it isn't very good, and the grill is not always open (our at sea day the grill was closed). The grill is the only place to get French fries. * You have to pay for room service (other than coffee/tea, cereal, muffins). Plus you need to have a premium room in order to get room service. * The sit down restaurant is only open for lunch for 1 1/2 hours. If you go on an excursion it's not an option. * All cruise lines have specialty restaurants, but Costa also has a section on their dinner menu that have items that you need to pay for. * Other cruise lines have one side of the dinner menu that you can order these items at any time (on Princess, you can get shrimp cocktail at any dinner). The choices on Costa were a couple pasta dishes (and they were not good). Shrimp was never offered except for one night and the entrée was pasta with shrimp (there was ONE, tiny shrimp on the pasta). * The only time a steak was offered was on formal night - then we received a well done piece of meat wrapped in puff pastry. * If you're traveling with children or teens (or a picky eater) there is basically nothing for them to eat during the day (have to wait for the pizza and hamburger sections to open at 7 pm). We ate off the ship as often as we could. Read Less

We really enjoyed our costa cruise out of Barcelona 2 years prior to this one but this was a big disappointment. It started with the company charging us $100.00 just to put our friends names on the tickets that we bought, the travel company put our names on both cabins but no information was even entered. Anyway, they charged for everything right down to ping pong balls to play a game. We bought the drink package, but it took forever to get a drink, bartenders played games with the guests, ignoring them while cleaning up the bar, I guess they were looking for more tips. The staff was friendly but there wasn't much motivation to work since they already had their tips paid. Food was good and our waiter was excellent in the evening for dinner but the breakfast and lunch was miserable! It took forever to be served and the choices were very limited. We have been on many cruises and we enjoy it a lot but never again on Costa. We aren't that picky or demanding but this was very disappointing from previous cruises. There wasn't much in the way of entertainment, no trivia, or sports events. The room was kept at 75 degrees, so at night it was too warm so we had to keep the door open. My husband keep asking for them to check on the air conditioning but they said that was the lowest it would go down to. We had a mini suite so it was a good size and we were able to board earlier then everyone else, thank goodness because the lines were SO long to board. They said 2 hours to get our luggage but it turned into 5. I had a tray of drinks spilt on me and nothing to change into for 4 hours, quite a sticky wet four hours to wait. It just seemed like a bus going around, dropping people off and picking them up at different stops, we had a good time but we won't go with Costa again. Read Less

This trip was an anniversary gift to my elderly parents. The trip was quite a disappointment. It felt as operator was trying to save on everything (service, entertainment, staffing, etc). It was all not that bad if not they lost my parents suitcase with a lot of valuables in it, as of November 4th the baggage was not returned to them even tho we made countless attempts to contact the operator in regards to this. My parents are cruise enthusiasts and been on more then 20 different cruises and never they were so disappointed in their trip, not to mention it was not cheap at all. Complete lack of customer service makes it even worse. My mother had all her glasses (and believe me those were not cheap glasses) in that suitecase and she really struggles without them, operator showed NO INTEREST in returning missing baggage or providing other means of compensation, feels like they only concerned about collecting the money. Will not use again or recommend to a friend! Read Less

I am writing this review because my family felt many differences with other previous cruises. For example, at the Andromeda buffet the opening hours were too limited with periods where you find nothing to eat (only water). In other cruise lines you can go to the buffet area to drink a coffee and eat at least pizza or sandwich at any time, making the atmosphere more relaxed and flexible (important if you have children). And when the buffet is open, Andromeda is crowded and is difficult to find a table. In other lines this is not an issue to be stressed on vacations (to stay on schedule and to find a table). There were many teenagers, but some of them playing at the swimming pool (Lido) without care of the elderly or the little kids (jumping and diving), only when they were splashing the cooking show they were stopped by the crew. The Costa Tour staff is very rude, if you ask something they just want to send you out of the ship. All these little things made our experience like you were part of a business chain, and not on vacation. The only places were we felt very nice were the cabin (cabin steward very polite and attentive) and during the dinner at Taurus restaurant. Read Less

Chose this cruise because of the itinerary and decent price. The ship was clean, but the cruise as a whole was a bit disappointing. The ship had a small theater (compared to others) and seemed to be geared more toward bars and making money. Information provided throughout the cruise was minimal and lacked details. Our cabin was assigned to us (we were not able to choose) and we ended up in a Samsara Spa Suite on deck 8. However, Costa's boarding ticket made it clear that we would not be able to enjoy the spa benefits that are normally associated with that type of cabin. It didn't take long to figure out why we were assigned to that cabin. It was directly under what becomes the dance floor on deck 9. Stomping and loud music on your ceiling until it is over. Our cabin steward was great, but he is probably to only Costa employee we encountered that I would say that about. Everyone else seemed disconnected from a cruise ship atmosphere. Dining was okay. Buffet needed variation and the portions in the restaurant were pretty small. Dessert choices and variety were also disappointing. Another important detail is that if you do not purchase one of the overpriced Costa beverage packages, you will be drinking WATER the entire cruise. If you are lucky, you will get a cup of coffee with breakfast on the buffet, but coffee with dessert in the dining room was even a challenge. The waiter was a one man show (other cruises we have been on had at least 3 people working the tables in groups). Obviously, an area where Costa is trying to cut costs. It was very obvious that our waiter was not a happy employee most evenings. Entertainment and activities were minimal for a cruise ship. A few shows (there were not many) were okay, and a few were just bad. Again, it seemed that the Costa Luminosa was more interested in the passengers spending money in the bars or casino during the evening. There were only 2 small pools that were usually loaded with kids. There was nothing else for kids to do. There were machines to pay for ping pong balls to play ping pong! The ship needed more pools and an adults only pool area like most other ships have. The plus of this cruise was the itinerary. BUT, we had to be back on the ship by 1:30 pm at most ports and the shore excursion prices were beyond unreasonable. Most of the beach excursions were about 45 Euros for a 20 minute bus ride to the beach. Read Less

Corporations exist to make money for their shareholders and there are two ways they can do it.  Forming a long-term relationship with customers who love the product, remain engaged and delighted and want to return. Or short-term gains through nickel-and-diming, cutting corners and slashing staff. In my opinion, Costa has clearly chosen the latter path to profitability for its parent corporation Carnival. I used to love Costa, with great experiences on both the Atlantica and Mediterranea in the Caribbean. Maybe it's the Mediterranean versus the Caribbean experience from a few years ago, or maybe it's a genuine sea-change at Costa since I was last on one of their ships. I'd looked forward with much excitement to this cruise, but Costa seemed to throw up impediments every step of the way.  And while I encourage you to keep reading, all that I say in here has been previously stated in earlier reviews, which I chose to ignore thinking this wasn't the Costa line I'd known in previous cruises. It's a great ship, with hard-working employees.   But those employees are being asked to carry out short-sighted policies. One example is the lack of tea and coffee outside of breakfast hours.  Travel on any cruise line and tea and coffee are available in at least one location around the clock.  The height of this absurdity came to a head on debarkation day when I wanted a cup of tea at 650am. Even though the tea/coffee station was set up, they weren't budging and wouldn't let people use it until 7am when the buffet line opened. Fancy ice-cream?  Not on Costa. There's a charge for ice-cream/gelato or you can use the machine by the swimming pool, at a cost.  The machine just looked so out of place and not what you want to see on a cruise ship.  (Both Disney and Carnival offer complimentary self-service ice-cream and some beverages around the clock.)  I'm not opposed to a business making money, but it comes at a cost:  I've taken three previous cruises on Costa and am so pissed by the nickel-and-diming that won't be taking another. Costa, by the way, also charges for what's billed a premium pizza. Other cruise lines deserve my business. The main dining room on most cruise ships is a nice place to get breakfast, especially on seadays.  Costa has a new approach:  Get rid of waitstaff and let passengers get their own food from a buffet set up in the main dining room.  Again, it might cut your costs but it's not the cruise experience.   If I wanted a buffet, I'd be at the buffet on deck 9. The number of menu options has been greatly reduced.  Many cruise lines offer a minimum of five entrée options.  Costa is down to about 3. The buffet food is virtually the same every day, with little variety.    The ice and water machines were temperamental and didn't always work. Another cost-cutting move was eliminating the daily menu that most cruise lines post just outside the main dining room. Not on Costa. A member of the wait staff told me it had been eliminated because of "security concerns," which I don't buy because that just doesn't make any sense. Whether that is the true reason, I'm not sure. In its place was a sign advertising paid dining options, which presumably creates less of a security risk. Just wondering why the menu information isn't posted to the MyCosta app that's available for download on the ship, or posted in a location that might be less disruptive. And speaking of "security concerns," no one seemed too worried about the crowds created byfoot traffic caused by the portable beer sales kiosks near the buffet. Also the buffet lines can be long, causing traffic jams at peak times. Also gone are the portable pasta stands which I've enjoyed on previous Costa cruises, presumably a casualty of cost-cutting. Passengers on cruises that I was on seemed to love it! Boarding at Venice was a mess.  Chaos at embarkation.  We were given a boarding card that said number 6 and we'd have to wait for our group to be called.   But when I went inside and asked where the check-in line was for suite passengers, all of a sudden I was given a number 1.  Once in the correct line, boarding was a breeze. If you weren't in a suite, it was a crowded wait. Debarkation was much better and they had us off the ship quite promptly. Rarely saw the cruise director, apart from the shows.   The entertainment was lacking. I was bored on this ship a lot and there is nothing to do, unless you're buying bingo cards or playing in the casino. Port times were limited.  We'd get into a port like Trieste around 7am and be gone by 2pm.  Likewise for Dubrovnik. On the plus side, cabin staff were hard-working and wonderful. Nelson the bartender in the karaoke/piano bar lounge was a genuinely nice guy. I'm looking forward to getting the customer survey and hopefully it will provide an opportunity to provide detailed feedback to Costa about this cruise's shortcomings, with my name attached. I was quite surprised that cruise line officials openly pushed customers to only score a 9 or 10, saying that anything less was viewed as a failure. Costa executives have to think about the way they score. Despite being urged to give high grades, I won't hesitate to give low or barely passing grades where appropriate. I really cannot recommend the Costa Luminosa, or the cruise line, based on this cruise and would certainly not recommend it to anyone who has cruised before and has a reasonable expectation of what a cruise should be. I've taken more than 30 cruises, with 4 of those on Costa and this was easily the worst. Read Less

My Italian sister-in-law who lives in Italy chose the cruise, as she has only ever cruised on Costa and does not realize that there are many better cruise lines from which to choose. Ship: It compares very poorly with MSC, Princess, Celebrity Or Holland America, our usual choices. 1.There was no water, tea or coffee available other than for purchase at the bar or when the buffet was open. everything that is normally complimentary on other lines required payment. 2. The cabin was large and beautiful, with a balcony. Well furnished 3. Dining was not as good as expected. The menu and food was supposedly designed and supervised by a well known Italian chef. It did not live up to expectations. Loin lamb chops were overcooked, thin and like leather. Appetizers and pasta were excellent. When I told the waiter that the lamb was overcooked, his response was "That's how it comes" Other food was fairly good. 4. Entertainment was mediocre, Similar to other cruises but without the variety and talent. 5 No intellectual or creative activities such as I have experienced on other lines: no quizzes, few games (bocce, shuffleboard, darts), or participation activities. 6. Putting course was 3 ill kept holes. 7. The animation team was not in evidence and did not encourage passenger participation. 8. There was little communication regarding daily activities or reminders over a communication system as to what was going on during the day. 9. The service and attitude of staff was excellent. Ive been on 46 cruises ,, 3 on Costa... I read the reviews on Costa Luminosa before going but I had booked the cruise already at a good price ... I was really disappointed in this cruise... We thought we were on a Timeshare cruise... 5 of us went , 2 suites 1 balcony cabins... 1st thing we found was no water was supplied at sitdown meals including the specialty dining room Club Costa.. We were charged $7.00 per bottle... We figured Costa cut the food budget to $5.00 per person per day... Prime rib was cut 3/16 of an inch thick... We figured the meat at each meal was between 2 and 4 oz.. Meals were almost the same every day... Small varances ... Pizza was a joke.. Pizza crust with sauce only... No cheese or meat ... No daily movies.. The big screen only showed advertisements... hardly anyone spoke American.. Ship was kept spotless... Shows were ok but mostly ships singers and dancers every night.. The downfall I think is ships automatic tips... Service has gone to crap... In the specialty dining room we usally had 2 waiters per table.. on this ship we had 1 server for 6 tables..We paid $34 for meal that took 3 hrs to get served and it wasn't a $8.00 meal... I would have expected it in the regular dining room... 1 steak on menu a poor grade ribeye .. I could go on but I think you get the way this is going... I WOULD NEVER PAY TO GO ON COSTA AGAIN... First, let me say that it has been a month since we returned from this cruise. Having sailed with three other cruise lines I found Costa to embarkation staff to be somewhat disorganized as it comes to a person with disabilities. It took some time for them to locate a large wheelchair both on embarkation and disembarking. Disembarking was a disaster and I finally had to use a walker because they could not locate a large wheelchair. We were about an hour and half late getting off the ship. I must say the Luminosa is a beautiful ship and the crew members are friendly as one would expect. The production shows were very well done and had gorgeous costuming. I addition they had an Italian tenor that was extremely talented. The stateroom (an accessible balcony) was very nice, good sized and well maintained. The passengers were mainly from Europe and there were many languages being spoken. It was odd, band very welcome, to hear English speakers. Almost all ship's announcements were made in four languages, which made for a very lengthy life boat drill. The food was of average ship fare with small portions except for the pasta course. The dining room at dinner time was very crowded. Our table was set for eight persons, but thankfully after the first dinner we had only six and that was comfortable. At dinner time the buffet is closed which makes for overcrowding in the main dining rooms. And this was without the ship being at full capacity. If you care to drink water you can get it for free at the buffet. However in the dining room there is a charge at breakfast even if your id card says you can have water. At dinner you can have all the bottled water you can drink, if it states WaterUSA on your ship id card. Also if you're used to free iced tea as on other ships you won't get it on Costa. Additionally if you care for lobster, shrimp or escargot Costa does not offer those in the main dining rooms. I also had a problem with the public accessible restrooms. Twice I was interrupted while in the restroom by the automatic door coming open which was embarrassing to me and the lady and man who opened it. This happened the second time after I had reported the problem after the first incident. Additionally another restroom was either always occupied or the auto door was not working even after I reported it. All in all the cruise was ok, but I would not sail Costa again. Their business model is European and not what we are used to in the US. Read Less

Our bad cruise experience on the Costa Luminosa. Dec 2-20th 2014, from Sovana Italy to Miami, 18 day transatlantic cruise. Here are a list of negative things we experienced from our cruise recently on the Luminosa by Costa: We had a panoramic suite # 8374. Renesa our room steward was very well trained in cleaning and housekeeping with 7 years experience she told us. But everything else was horrible !! 1:No one seems to know what they are doing in the Costa Cruise I took. Upon getting off the ship I called the night before and the clerk said if I was a US citizen I did not have to go to the theater for immigration checkout. In the morning I was told I had to go to the theater first. Which later turned out to be false. Unacceptable. 2: I was supposed to have priority disembarking with the Panoramic Suite. Not so. I was given a white luggage tag and told to wait in the long waiting line for debarking like the rest of the cabins. No one knew where we had to go, and it was one big mess of over crowdedness of persons everywhere. The staff did not know what to do and gave false information and directions continuously. Unacceptable. 3: The butler service I was suppose to get daily was non existent. I did not get daily service calls from the butler and only saw him twice. The first butler put dirty sink water in my suite in room thermos, so I had him dismissed due to negligence and irresponsible actions. Another butler came and I saw him only twice during the entire cruise. No service as promised. Unacceptable. 4: The rooms constantly reeked of smells coming in from the bathroom drains and sinks as well as the ventilation system . So we had to leave the balcony door open continuously. Unacceptable. 5: There movies on the ship were all at a surcharge of almost 9 Euros. No free movies or on board activities accept some stupid silly games and poolside cha cha cha lessons which was the same thing every day and night in the lounge. Just lessons 1,2,3. Stupid and totally boring with no diversity. Unacceptable. 6:There was no live entertainment or shows in the theater lounge accept one acrobatic skit which was nothing and the rest were all prerecorded shows on film. Unacceptable. 7: The food was horrible, over cooked all the time, over salted. NO bran muffins or dry granola for breakfast, the dry cereals were very low quality . Unacceptable. 8: The food servers did not know how to speak English very well and often misunderstood and/or did not understand at all the orders or questions . Unacceptable. 9: The food servers did not know how to service, properly serving the food, pour coffee etc…correctly Unacceptable. 10: The pancakes we ordered were barely warm in both the upstairs buffet and the breakfast sit down restaurant in the mornings, and often were out right cold. Unacceptable. 11: The water machines for clean drinking water were constantly out of order. I was told they were waiting for parts in the next dock. But the same problems keep occurring and the machines were constantly out of service during the entire duration of the trip. I took many pictures of this. Unacceptable. 12:The ice cream machines were out of service for the entire duration of the trip and were being prepped for the next cruise on the evening of the 19th , as I took photos of the machines to show they were being prepared for the next cruise to be operational. So we were cheated and cut off from this service without any notices. Unacceptable. 13: The gym smelt moldy all time and inadequate ventilation for clean air and pure air was not available . The air system was not working correctly. Unacceptable. 14: The bicycles and treadmills did not have any of the on screen programming working for viewing news or TV or whatever. Only one program was working from the entire selection and it was only in German. Unacceptable. 15:The Spa was a joke. The water in the dead sea Jacuzzi was cool-warm, never hot by Jacuzzi standards. The steam room and sauna was not working correctly and the sitting rock relaxation chairs were not hot or just slightly warn. This was a joke. Unacceptable. 16:Gala night the prime rid was as tough as rubber and the Matre de that was on then also complained to the chef that t his was unacceptable . This Matra de from Italy flu back home from Catalina for his vacation for two months on the 16th of Dec. Unacceptable. 17:The dinning room occasionally had some waiters and wait employees from the Philippines doing some short skits with music which was in such bad taste. Where they wore white gloves and held there crotches in sexual suggestions and rubbing their buts to the ground in some very bad taste type of choreography . Horrible and very much sexual suggestive. This was done three times for a total of around 54 minutes each time. Garbage and like some side street show, not one expected from a professional and experienced cruise line. Unacceptable. 18: I called to have my jacket pressed for the Dec 18th gala dinner and the house keeping person came., not the butler. And brought me back the jacket wrinkled everywhere , worse than when I gave it to them. I took photos of it and had to call the desk to complain and they took the charge off . He promised me that it would be back to my satisfaction without any wrinkles in it, or it would be free. The way I got it back is as if it was never pressed and only held and given back to me after being bungled up more, since it was in worse condition when I got it back from when I gave it to them. What kind of service and company runs a business like this? Unacceptable. 19: I had to go upstairs every night to find clean water from one of three machines to find out which one was working correctly so I could fill my in room thermos. I had to service myself constantly. Unacceptable. 20: The water machine sensors did not work correctly and need to be updated with modern equipment. The ice machines were constantly out of ice and a ice chest had to be put on the side for ice for the passengers since the machines were not working most of the time. Unacceptable. 21:The buffet in the aft of the ship on the deck where the rear pool is was closed all the time. Unacceptable. 22: The middle of ship pool was netted off and not in use most of the trip accept for the last few days of the cruise . Only the pool at the aft was open and the Jacuzzi. Unacceptable ! 23: The overhead closure in the middle pool area was closed most all the time , even in good sunny weather and was only opened the last few days of the cruise. Unacceptable ! 24: No one told us we had bottled water service in the restaurants without state room class until I accidentally found out by asking why another table was getting bottled gas water each night by the glass. Unacceptable. 25: A fire broke out on engine 4 early AM when we were at sea crossing the Atlantic. We were told constantly by sources that the ship was going to abort the cruise and stay docked at St. Johns so the engine could be fixed with parts being flown in. Then we heard another story that were going to have the option of being flown home from there. Another story was that if they could fix the engine the next cruise set for the 20th -27th was going to be reloaded to another Costa cruise liner. This was just added stress and did not allow us to make adequate preparations for our trip outside excursions , which we always booked from outside the ship and never used the ships excursions due to lack of trust and professionalism. 26: I have videos and the passenger Gabriella in 8303, and the Ken and Eric in room 8376 also experienced many of the same problems and complaints and you can contact them directly . ken and Eric said they were going to complain to Carnival cruise lines once they got home. 27: I also have videos of the passengers who were complaining about the dirty and unclean air in their rooms air supply and many passenger got sick with coughing constantly during the entire trip including my wife. I have recorded videos from many passengers confirming this . Videos available upon request. 28: Costa still has pending per-authorization charges, from Dec 13th, 2014, that they have not released from my credit card account as of this date still pending Dec 29th 2014 at my bank. One week after they charged the final invoice for my service charges. More proof of their slipshod operation and lack of experience, and professionalism in accounting and the industry . The food was absolutely terrible, not edible many times, over salted,. Over cooked and just bad quality without exception. There are other things as well. But I am frankly burned out on logging all the things and issues that were negative . I also need to mention that while crossing the Atlantic Engine #4 caught fire in the early AM and all the power went out in the ship. This was around 5 AM. The engine was eventually fixed . The ship was running on the other engines for a few days. I had direct view of the engines path in the water since we had the Panoramic Suite on the 8th floor overlooking the entire back and right side of the ship. I brought all these issues up to the desk as they were happening and only got a line of empty chatter, and false promises most of the time. I sent a copy of my complaint here into Costa cruise line administrative office and was totally ignored. Not one word or reply. Just be aware when your booking a cruise with this ship what to look forward to. Maybe they will change things in the future since they are docked in Miami now for 2 months doing the Caribbean area. But I seriously doubt it.   Read Less

We have cruised seven times, mostly Carnival lines. Although the food was better than most, as many other travelers have said, the service was not very friendly. We were most aggravated by the $11 a day per person we were charged automatically for "tips" that were not deserved or earned. No incentive for employees to do a good job. I prefer tipping myself so I know the employees get the money and the hard workers are properly identified and rewarded. No food after dinner on a cruise line except for a whole pizza you have to pay for? What happened to 24 hour food. Room service menu was a joke. All the soft serve ice cream machines were closed without any explanation that was intelligible. The head of buffet rudely told me to cover up when I walked through with a bathing suit while everyone else was half naked (despite the fact that their bodies should have been covered). Italians hate Americans and 95% was Italian. Rude is an understatement. We were ostracized by the crew, staff, and other passengers. We got a room that said Ocean View but it was actually a view of the side of a lifeboat! Many ships have lifeboats below the cabins but not the luminosa. Bored to death on sea days. Very few activities. All announcements were made in five languages. Ugggh. Asking any questions about the ship were either ignored or dismissed. If a coffee machine was empty, no one would offer to get one, just say in a foreign language that I could walk half a mile to another machine. The only good thing about Costa was a very good embarkation and disembarkation method. Unless you were foreign and had to wait in a huge line to get back to Miami. Americans should avoid Costa lines at all costs unless you speak fluent Italian and do not look American! No football games or movies on main outdoor television. Only 24/7 advertising. No ESPN. Sports bar had no sports on televisions. Juices were flavored water. Beds were hard and uncomfortable. Pillows small and awful. Casino was a joke. Video poker games were rigged and pay tables so low it was ridiculous to even try to play. Poker table was used once a day for a tournament or two. I will say the singers, especially the Tringali Trio, were amazingly good but again very unfriendly to Americans. Read Less

I have always loved Costa, going back to the Fredrico C, Carla C, and Flavian. Service was very European and luxurious-we had this 3 years ago on the Costa Serena, so when we decided to go westbound transatlantic we chose the Costa Luminosa for the trip - the itinerary contained 8 ports we never docked at (impressive sine we have over 100+ cruises under our belts. The ports were interesting but the ship's excursions were VERY EXPENSIVE compared to other Carnival Corporations other lines offerings. The cruise staff while always trying, was not very understandable in English - and all activities were mostly in Italian unless you asked for some English, and then it was not understandable and very very brief. The cruise director was no where to be found during the day or evening except for his MCing main shows or evening events including the Master of the vessel who was always interacting with his cruisers. In the daily program, dining options were listed but never appeared, craft projects were scheduled and the ship did not have the supplies. The food on the ship always sounded great, but was tasteless, meat extremely tough as rubber and over cooked, and vegetables consisted of one or two morsels. The Indian and Phiiipine food staff were very accommodating and always communicative and smiling as were the Maitre D's assistants. The bar staff was friendly and accommodative, but NOT the bar supivisors (managers) who spoke down to the passengers. we spoke to other passengers and got the comments like the cruise was rubbish, disappointing, etc. In the last three years you have to pay for pizza, ice cream, deck games, etc. Cruises were always all inclusive except for bar, laundry, excursions, etc. Every time you turned around you had to pay, so while the fares appear to be lower, Costa makes it up by"nickel and diming" the passengers. While everyone was friendly, and smoking has been contained to designated areas, the passengers would not give others the opportunity to get out of an elevator before pausing you out of the way and pushing their way into elevators. The most exciting event was while in the North Atlantic we experienced an engine room fire that was quickly extinguished, but the passengers were milling about and groups going to the muster stations as information was not being given frequently from the bridge or cruise staff. The event awoke the whole ship about 4:30 am. Al and all I don't think I would recommend Costa or sail Costa in the future - I will cruise on other Carnival Corp's other lines aimed at the American/Canadian customer.   Read Less

We are veteran cruisers but this was our first time to sail on Costa. Costa took the fun out of shipboard life. On our cruise of the Norwegian fiords we were charged three Euros for every one liter of water in the dining room. Free iced tea was not an option either. Though water was free in the buffet for breakfast and lunch, there was no buffet at dinner time. Instead Costa offered salad, pizza, and dessert for four Euros in the buffet area if one chose not to go to the dining room in the evening. There was a charge in the buffet in the evening for water, tea, etc. We soon realized that even though we drink wine, water is necessary for our health and so we purchased plenty of it but we did not like being charged for it. The only cookies on board, according to what I was told by the maitre de, were sugar cookies at tea time. With no buffet, there was no option to go and get an evening dessert in the buffet except for one night's very late evening party. The ship's photography department printed the best photos from the customer's onboard sitting in a giant size of about 12 X 15 inches. When we wanted the best photo in a series of photos, they said to print it in a smaller size we must pay for two photos "to recompense" them. The 8 x 10s were 19 Euros and the 12 X 15s were 29 Euros. They were definitely not customer friendly and we responded by not buying any. Our cabin attendant was very pleasant and did her job well. She was the bright spot for us in the Costa cruise personnel. Each time we walked through the casino during the hours it was open we noticed it had no more than about ten percent of the tables or machines occupied. Since cruise ships usually make a big percentage of their profits through their casinos, we had to wonder if Costa is trying to make up for lack of casino activity with charging for water and photographs, a poor strategy at best in my opinion. We do not foresee ever sailing Costa again. Read Less

We had a 14 days cruise on Luminose last month(actually in Baltic Sea and Norway) and I would like to share with you some my experience.. There were some new changes started on our trip: no buffet for dinner only restaurant, no free water on dinner table and no cold and hot and ice water after 5 pm (water stations were closed). Menu was almost same everyday and cooking was terrible. In my mind the food in lunch buffet is better than dinner restaurant. If you were hungry after dinner you had to pay for pizza and only pizza was offered. The on ship drink was very expensive, 50 euro for a bottle red wine. The excursions were expensive too. Have you heard " cheap ticket but expense on board". There was no live band for entertainment and some shows were repeated within a week. The service was quite different from American cruise company. They are two different classes. The first language is Italian and this cruise was tailored for European market, you pay euro not dollar. That is 30% more. Be aware.. Read Less

I recently returned from a Cruise on the Costa Luminosa. The good news: -The ship is beautiful and well maintained -Cleanliness is a priority -Cabins are a good size ( we had a balcony) -All inclusive beverage package (liquor portion) is a good value for the money (except for the fact that they requires both parties in the cabin to purchase ) The bad news: -Other than a few exceptions ( like our cabin attendant and our dinner wait staff) the crew is extremely rude!! -Customer service is not a priority, I was constantly made to feel that I was bothering them -Disembarkation process was a disaster! We almost missed our plane, due to inaccurate information provided by the crew, but nobody cared. Their priority was to get the people off the ship who booked excursions that day, instead of allowing travelers who had to make flights off first. -After 10pm, only hot food available on buffet, was pizza -Strict buffet hrs. Limited food options between breakfast/lunch and dinner -All-inclusive beverage package, doesn't include bottled water. Water available on deck taste terrible, therefore you have to order a glass of water from the bar service staff every time or you had to purchase an additional bottled water beverage package. -Although bar service staff is visible, their service is poor. They hang around the bar and wait for you to come and get your own drinks. Min. service on the lido deck -I broke a nail while the ship and was charged $19 by the nail tech for the repair - very small casino Needless to say this was my last Costa Cruise!! Read Less

We had high expectations on the cruise. We wanted to experience the Caribbean and enjoy the easy life on the ship. Unfortunately the trip was not what we had hoped for. First of all, we hadn't realised, that all the places we ported would be made only for tourists. You can't really say you've seen the Caribbean, if you just lay on a beach, where the locals can't even enter or take part to excursions where you are taken to tourist attractions with no sign of anything original... There I got to excursions. They were really expensivebut the quality was poor. I went riding, and the excursion included an half an hour walk by a road (was promesed to be by the beach) and a five-minute swim in the sea with the horse. The rest of time was just standing and waiting. The excursion info promised "an experience of a lifetime for sportslovers", but in real life it was just sitting on a horse for a really short period of time. And how much for this "experience of a lifetime"? $100!!!!!!!! My husband went o a snorkeling tour, which turned out to be a swim in a place with nothing to see, and a terrible hurry all the time. Then to food and drink. The food was really good. We enjoyed every bit of it. The drink package we purchased didn't turn out to so all inclusive as we thought. You had to be quite careful what to drink, if you didn't want to pay any extra. We were told that only some wines and fine alcohols would not be included but actually there were about as many drinks that weren't included that there were drinks to include in the package. You could only get water and soft drinks by glass, and had to pay extra if you wanted a bottle. The customer service was really poor. They were nice and friendly, but they didn't actually DO anything to help you. In most cases they just said they were sorry but nothing could (or would!!!) be done. The same problem was with the excursion desk. They listened to our reclamation about the excursions, but wouldn't do anything or offer any compensation. All the waiters and room attendants were very nice. It seemed, that the higher the rank the more rude the crew member. The cruise was a disapoitment to us, mainly because everything was so made for tourists. If you want to see the Carribean, don't take a cruise. If you want to have everything made, thought and organised for you without any expectations of your own and you are prepared to queue and wait long times and have loads of money to spend on all of this, then a cruise is the thing for you.   Read Less

As a family we have cruised about 5 times mostly on carnival. My wife and I have been on about 10 total cruises various cruise lines never costa. Expecting luxury based on my perceptions only we were quite shocked to find out it was just another cruise ship in terms of service and cabins. Over all the ports were great but the line did not stay long enough for several of the islands. 5 hour stops is a joke you can do very little in 4.5 hours on an island ( assuming you don't cut it close to the departure time so not really 5 hours, closer to 4 if you include the wait time to get off the ship). Food was very funky, we are from Chicago so our idea of Italian is very different then what actually is Italian in terms of meals. Pizza was horrible and that was all you really had for the kids because goose neck does not go over well with 10 and 13 year olds. We are used to buffets around the clock not so with this cruise line. You will search for a bit to find even one drink station open to get water or ice tea. You will pass several closed off stations on your quest to find the open one( not joking only 1 open!). You will also learn that ice cream is only open for a short period each day miss that time slot and you are out of luck until the next day. Smoking was annoying but tolerable as Europeans have a different idea of that discussing habit. But the main smoking hole was right off the main elevator on the main floor of the ship so everyone got to enjoy the heavy smoke on the way to each meal, show or trip to the casino. The biggest issue we encountered was on day 2 when my 10 year old daughter pulled her suitcase out from under her bed and noticed something on the floor. The something that she was now holding with her fingers was a USED condom. My shock was what happened after I brought this to the attention of the front desk.......ready.......Wait for it....... Nothing other than sorry this happened. I ask for a supervisor and was told none was available. Got another room steward who again gave me a hollow sorry and told me the room was going to be deep cleaned..... What ever that means. Guess they are not "deep cleaned" between cruises? Whole thing was a viewed as a joke and treated as a joke by the cruise line. Not very funny from my standpoint nor from a parents when they have to give a very early sex education class to their youn daughter while on vacation.   Read Less

I have been on over 50 cruises. This one rates in the bottom 10%. The ship was clean and sparkling, and our cabin attendant was great. Other than that, we got what we paid for. The morale of the staff in the buffet area was horrible. The dining room staff (same people, different location) were a little better. The food and beverage manager dealt with his employees with an iron fist and sagging stomach. The cruise line charges passengers for their "gratuities", but passes little of it to the crew. Obviously there is no incentive to do a good job unless they want to sign on for another contract. "Roast beef" was served three nights out of 10. It was about 1/8" thick. Pitchers of iced tea and water were placed on the table, but no sugar/substitute. Minestrone soup was served every night. No coffee was available on the ship until after 7:00 AM unless you called room service. The quality of the coffee was so bad that they had packets of instant coffee available for their guests. Water/iced tea glasses were hard to find during buffet hours. Disembarkation took hours, and was a nightmare. Debarkation times were issued on the basis of cabin location rather than flight times. Immigration took retinal scans and finger prints of all foreign passengers (probably 80% of the ship). Angry passengers were forced to stand in line for hours waiting for 11 immigration agents to clear nearly 3,000 passengers in Miami. Many people missed their flights. This was a Christmas cruise, but it lacked any spirit. Read Less

This was our first cruise. Now that I have been on two others since, I feel that now is the time to post a review. I decided on this cruise due to price. I had never been on a cruise before and my husband suggested that while we were on our Miami vacation, look for a quick cruise so we could see if we like it. He sure wasn't expecting for me to book a 10 night! I did not know what I was booking, so I booked an interior guarantee. As seasoned cruisers would expect, we were in the basement. Yet, I must admit, it was a large room! Once we made friends and saw their ocean view...we were glad we had a coffin, uh, I mean interior. Not only that, but our room Stewert, Eli, was AMAZING! I did not expect to have a butler cater to us and our every need! As well as our waitress-don't remember her name- but was also very nice. That's the good. Now the bad and the ugly. The rest of the crew that we encountered that was not service oriented was rude. Especially if you were not European. We English speaking folk were the minority. And we were treated as such. To be treated as if we were beneath the crew by the crew was more then I could handle. Here is my favorite part. Early one morning when I first woke up, I needed something from the shop. Without make up and hair in pony tail, I picked out what I needed and went to the cashier. He slide my card, looked at my picture then at me and told me to not leave the room without make up on again. He also verbalized that I should NEVER let my husband see me without makeup. I cried for the rest of the day. Not only that, but it is now 15 months later and I have still not left my house without make up. This man did something so horrible to my self confidence that I can't even describe it. Never in my 45 years of life have I ever been insulted so badly, especially by a stranger. I did complain about it so the service desk-my husband said if I didn't, he was going to say something to the man, which I did not want him to do because he was mad. They basically told me that they don't care and what do I want them to do about it. Read Less

My family and I have sailed previously with Costa twice before. We went on the Costa Atlantica out of Fort Lauderdale. This was our first time on the Costa Luminosa for it's 10 day Eastern Caribbean voyage out of the Port of Miami. We had a much better experience with the Costa Atlantica during the previous voyages. Embarkation- We waited at least two hours in order to begin embarkation. There was no information given to us on when embarkation would begin. On the positive side, they had complimentary refreshments to the guests waiting. Although when it did begin, the workers made it run very smoothly and we were on the ship within a matter of 20 minutes after the embarkation process had begun for everyone. Safety Briefing: took forever and the staff was very rude. It was in five languages and they had to repeat how to put on the life vest for each individual language. Cabins- The sheets in the cabins were not changed at all over the 10 days. Ice was not given to us at all. I had filled up the ice barrels from the Lido deck. There was no shampoo or lotions provided, and soap was only provided one time for the entire voyage. We had to ask for more soap and toilet paper. Customer/Guest Service- The employees were very ignorant about the ports. The line was always very long. We found a wallet that we brought down to the customer service, and we had to wait on line, and we were asked many questions. The next day, we were asked to come down for further questions and had to wait on line AGAIN, which was very uncalled for. Dining- Juices were served only for breakfast, otherwise, there was a selection between Iced Tea and water. BREAKFAST: On the lido: The guy at the omelette station was lazy and was sending people to the wrong stations so he could do less work. In the dining room: Was a buffet breakfast LUNCH: Awful menu and limited hours. DINNER: Very bad food. The soups were similar to water. Caesar salad is not on the menu and when requested, it was not the Caesar salad that we know. No coffee or tea after dinner. The desserts were good. ROOM SERVICE: was available for unacceptable fees Entertainment- It was good overall. However, on the first couple of days, they put up SHOWS OF SHOWS. Photography- We purchased photos from Costa Club cocktail party, where the captain was not there when taking the picture, but was cropped in anyways. Why did we have to purchase photos and have the captain forced into the picture? Disembarkation: We did the zone disembarkation which took FOREVER. Primarily because the ship was full of Europeans which made the process much longer. We heard that the reason that there were many Europeans was because they were given a much lower rate for the adults and bringing the kids for FREE. The smoking policy on board was enforced very poorly. Europeans are the absolute worst to travel with. They lack very basic manners and they are very aggressive. There is a possible chance that you could be fighting with some of the ruder ones.   Read Less

First: Recognition for our waiter, second floor, late seating, DHAVI MENDOZA. He turned a difficult and unsavory situation totally around. He gave the best service on board, oh wait, that would be the only service on board. In all fairness our cabin steward, Michael, kept our cabin clean and the ice bucket filled. We set sail December 17th, 2013 from Miami. We were a group of 8 adults on a Christmas cruise comprised of 2 couples in the 50 to 65 age range, 2 mom’s in their late 70’s and one couple in their 80’s. We had been booked since April, 2013 with 3 premium cabins and 2 classic cabins as per the COSTA cabin designation so that we could get priority choice seatings for dinner for 8. We had expressed our desire to dine together. We had made arrangements and been assured by our different agents and even directly by the Costa offices in South Florida. When we arrived, we found that we were assigned not only to different tables, but to different seatings. It took a long and drawn out unsavory discussion with customer service to try to correct their error. We have never dealt with ruder and less effective customer service on a cruise ship or elsewhere for that matter. They were rude to our older travel companions and to us. I called COSTA in South Florida directly and was told in no uncertain terms: “If I did not like it, I could get off the ship!” I was appalled, after 65 cruises all over the world; I had never been treated so rudely. We finally met with the Maître and were assured of a table for 8 the following night at late seating. We would not accept that and wanted to dine together the first night as our elderly mothers did not wish to dine by themselves. Finally, we gave in only to find many empty tables at dinner....we ended up with 6 of us upstairs and 2 downstairs for dinner. The table they gave us for 6 was horrible. It was in the back and up against the window with chairs pushed up against the wall that we could not get up from unless the other 2 on the same side got up and moved their chairs. I guess that was our punishment for not accepting their dinner arrangements. When I got to our cabin, after a most uncomfortable session of arguing for a service we had paid for and confirmed seven months before, they had come up to our cabin to get my luggage off the ship. Remember, I had been told by the South Florida office to get off the ship if I did not like the way I was being treated. My husband did not want to get off, so we stayed on. Being our first COSTA cruise, I was in danger of having the complete cruise soured, but I am managing to be as fair as possible. Boarding was the best we have ever had, even compared to the luxury cruise lines we have been on. BUT; we had a call from the first part of our group that got on board earlier. They were there at 1 pm to begin boarding and explained that it was a stampede; just a mob with no rhyme or reason and no organization as to how to board. They warned us to get to the port later. So we arrived at 3 pm and just walked on board. There were no more than 10 passengers boarding at that time. COSTA leaves your key cards in your room, just walk on board directly to your room as they are all ready and open. You must take your card to kiosks that are located throughout the ship and activate it with your credit card. That is easy enough. We had purchased the drink package, which by the way is the best drink package that we have ever seen. So that was a positive. The cabin is nice as compared to other ships. It has adequate storage and a spacious bathroom. The shower is large though it has a shower curtain, so be careful not to splash too much. The water pressure and temperature are fabulous. The closet is a good size and there are many drawers, cupboards and shelves. The only negative is that the balcony was small and we were located right above the life boats. Though the view was not obstructed once you looked down you saw the large yellow roofs of the life boats. The beds were adequate and the cabins were quiet. We were on the 5th deck in the center of the ship. The Luminosa is full of lights, very bright, hence the name. A bit tacky for my taste. It had a lovely Botero sculpture in the main atrium. The negatives are that there are no really large areas. Everything is small when compared to other lines. The ceilings are low, even the main atrium is not large. There is a lot of smoking on board, but people seemed to keep to the designated areas. The ship does not have an enclosed observatory area or bar. The food was horrible! There is no more to say. The organization of the cafeteria on the 9th deck was nonexistent. The same was served on most all of the stations. The one omelet station was always over whelmed. Out by the pool, the burgers were good. The dining room food was mostly frozen and microwaved. One night we ordered from all 7 courses and not one was edible. The fruit was fresh. Staff was from all over the world comprised of the usual Caribbeans, Philipinos, and Eastern Europeans. The main staff (customer service, supervisors/managers and crew) was mostly Italian or European. “I don’t know” or “we ran out” was the order of the day. The staff was inefficient and acted bothered when asked any question. I am very sad to say that they, the European staff especially customer service, are extremely rude, curt and disagreeable. We have been exposed to Europeans before as we have been to Europe on many occasions and have family living in Europe. I personally have had professional and personal business in Denmark and Scandinavia. Thus, we are all familiar with the European way of life. In this case their behavior was just purely rude, disagreeable and ineffective. Even having an open mind, as another CC Costa reviewer suggested previously in her review, would not have helped here. Unless it is a remarkable deal or a remarkable itinerary, we will not be cruising COSTA again.   Read Less
